in a moment with analysis of that debate between Nick Clegg and Nigel | :00:00. | :00:09.
Good evening. The head of Jersey Tourism says he's | :00:10. | :00:14.
shocked at proposals to scrap his Government`run department and | :00:15. | :00:17.
replace it with a privately`run body called Visit Jersey. The move was | :00:18. | :00:20.
publicly announced to representatives of the hospitality | :00:21. | :00:23.
industry last Friday ` only hours after tourism staff were told their | :00:24. | :00:34.
department could close. I describe this new model as the | :00:35. | :00:37.
catalyst for a fresh start. A fresh start, but at what cost? | :00:38. | :00:40.
Members of Jersey's hospitality association listening to the | :00:41. | :00:43.
proposal by the Tourism Shadow Board to scrap the Government's Tourism | :00:44. | :00:47.
Department. The Board was appointed by the Economic Development Minister | :00:48. | :00:50.
to investigate the industry after a decade of falling visitor numbers. | :00:51. | :00:55.
But their proposed solution of replacing Jersey Tourism with a | :00:56. | :00:58.
smaller independent body called Visit Jersey was difficult news for | :00:59. | :01:01.
staff, as they were told less than 24 hours before the industry | :01:02. | :01:03.
briefing. It could have been handled better. | :01:04. | :01:17.
But, bad news is bad news however it is presented. Whilst it was | :01:18. | :01:26.
uncomfortable, as it was a shock, we must now move forward. | :01:27. | :01:28.
The Economic Development Department, which is responsible for Tourism, | :01:29. | :01:31.
wasn't available for comment today. On Friday they said they will | :01:32. | :01:38.
consider the interests of staff. The interests of staff will be | :01:39. | :01:41.
considered and looked after as part of the process. | :01:42. | :01:44.
The idea of out`sourcing tourism to the private sector isn't a new one. | :01:45. | :01:49.
It's been considered for almost a decade ` but it's claimed the money | :01:50. | :01:53.
it takes to promote our island as a holiday destination has proved too | :01:54. | :01:59.
much for it to go ahead. Having to buy in services centrally | :02:00. | :02:05.
is expensive, therefore there would have been less money for marketing. | :02:06. | :02:12.
With that in mind, it makes sense to keep us where we were. | :02:13. | :02:18.
But for how much longer? Staff at the Tourism Department now wait to | :02:19. | :02:22.
hear what the future holds as the recommendations are considered. | :02:23. | :02:25.
Until then, it's business as usual. Two female staff at La Moye prison | :02:26. | :02:29.
in Jersey, who were being investigated over allegations of | :02:30. | :02:31.
misconduct, have resigned. The prison's investigation into their | :02:32. | :02:34.
actions has been suspended. No other details of the allegations have been | :02:35. | :02:37.
revealed, but both staff were being investigated separately. The head of | :02:38. | :02:40.
Jersey's prison, Bill Millar, says the reason for any individual | :02:41. | :02:41.
resignations should be kept private. Deputy Allister Langlois has been | :02:42. | :02:49.
appointed as Deputy Chief Minister of the States of Guernsey. He | :02:50. | :02:53.
narrowly missed out on the role of Chief Minister in the election to | :02:54. | :02:56.
that post two weeks ago. Peter Gillson has been elected unopposed | :02:57. | :03:12.
as Guernsey's new Home Minister. There are calls for better hospital | :03:13. | :03:16.
services for people with epilepsy in Jersey. The island doesn't have a | :03:17. | :03:19.
specialist nurse. Around 500 people have the condition. Now the mother | :03:20. | :03:22.
of one of them says she's frustrated by how long it takes for her | :03:23. | :03:26.
daughter to see a specialist. The Health Department says provision in | :03:27. | :03:28.
the island is good. I would like to see an epilepsy | :03:29. | :03:31.
nurse reinstated here. That would benefit us. And then we could get a | :03:32. | :03:38.
response quickly. We have the facilities here. We have | :03:39. | :03:42.
approachable people who we can get hold of. We have good GPs as well. | :03:43. | :03:48.
People should not be fearful about interacting with those services. | :03:49. | :03:59.
Guernsey versus Jersey, one of the great sporting rivalries. But this | :04:00. | :04:04.
summer a lot of those games could be cancelled due to a lack of flights | :04:05. | :04:08.
and ferries. Cricket Boards in Jersey and Guernsey say they're | :04:09. | :04:10.
facing problems getting their teams off the island to play each other. | :04:11. | :04:14.
Spring is in the air and the ground's being prepared for a season | :04:15. | :04:17.
of cricket. For the first time this year, the roller is out on the | :04:18. | :04:20.
cricket square. A seasonal soon be under way. Matches being played here | :04:21. | :04:23.
and in Jersey could be in jeopardy. Following changes to airlines and | :04:24. | :04:26.
ferry schedules, some Channel Islands sports associations are | :04:27. | :04:29.
struggling to fly or catch the ferry to take on their old rivals. The | :04:30. | :04:33.
Guernsey Cricket Board says the new code share arrangement is reducing | :04:34. | :04:41.
capacity for a number of flights. The scheduling now means that day | :04:42. | :04:46.
trips across the weekend are not possible. There is not a day when | :04:47. | :04:52.
you can get across. So, the flights are the only option. And with | :04:53. | :05:00.
reduced capacity, it has loaded that onto the flights and they have | :05:01. | :05:04.
reduced their capacity. As it is did this morning, we had no option in | :05:05. | :05:08.
terms of playing those games and had to cancel them. | :05:09. | :05:11.
It's a frustrating time for clubs in Jersey as well. Especially when | :05:12. | :05:14.
States money is sometimes on offer to help players get off`island for | :05:15. | :05:19.
games. The States have been very good this year because they have | :05:20. | :05:23.
given us so much more money with regards to travel. It is OK having | :05:24. | :05:30.
the ability to travel but you have two be able to do it. | :05:31. | :05:35.
The Channel Islands have a long and strong tradition of inter`island | :05:36. | :05:38.
sporting rivalry. But many clubs are hoping they can ride out the | :05:39. | :05:48.
problems and get their games on. In a statement tonight, Blue Islands | :05:49. | :05:51.
said that they hadn't heard from Guernsey Cricket board until today, | :05:52. | :05:54.
but they have now reached a solution and travel plans have been | :05:55. | :05:57.
accommodated. They say they're always putting on extra flights to | :05:58. | :06:00.
accommodate and they encourage groups to contact the airline in | :06:01. | :06:03.
advance in order that they can continue to meet our islands' sports | :06:04. | :06:04.
teams' needs. Just before we go to the weather, a | :06:05. | :06:14.
look ahead to tomorrow. It is School Report Day here on BBC News, when | :06:15. | :06:17.
classrooms turn into newsrooms. We will have a special report from the | :06:18. | :06:20.
students of St Anne's school in Alderney and coverage throughout the | :06:21. | :06:24.
day too on BBC Radio Guernsey BBC Radio Jersey. | :06:25. | :06:27.
That's all from us ` I'll leave you with the weather. | :06:28. | :06:31.
Hello. We have some showers to content with. Some could be heavy, | :06:32. | :06:46.
with the risk of hail and thunder. Initially, some dry weather. So | :06:47. | :07:00.
these twins. `` Southeast winds. Some sunshine in the morning but | :07:01. | :07:04.
quickly a Clydebank approaches from the South. `` a bank of cloud | :07:05. | :07:17.
approaches from the South. It gets better and warmer into the weekend. | :07:18. | :07:22.
More showers to come on Friday. Some quite heavy. Then milder and dry by | :07:23. | :07:26.
the time we get to Sunday. blowing. On the outlook, it is | :07:27. | :07:35.
warming up towards the weekend. Here's Nick Miller with more. | :07:36. | :07:41.
Some of the many faces of spring weather showed themselves today. Sun | :07:42. | :07:46.
in Scotland, snow in the showers that moved in across England. Hail | :07:47. | :07:52.
as well. Adrian took this picture from Essex and the chilly feel stays | :07:53. | :07:56.
with us for the rest of the week along with further showers. If you | :07:57. | :08:01.
don't like this, wait for this! Temperatures heading up at the | :08:02. | :08:04.
weekend. To achieve that, we | :08:05. | :08:05. |
