That is all from us. There is a first look at the papers | :00:00. | :00:09.
Good evening. There is pressure tonight for a re`think on the future | :00:10. | :00:15.
of Jersey's Waterfront development. It is after a major bank decided to | :00:16. | :00:19.
pull out of moving into the planned multi`million`pound International | :00:20. | :00:21.
Finance Centre. It has come as a huge knock to the government`funded | :00:22. | :00:24.
company behind the plans. Emma Chambers reports. | :00:25. | :00:29.
It is costing the Government millions, but it is hoped this | :00:30. | :00:31.
multistorey International Finance Centre ` planned for Jersey's | :00:32. | :00:34.
Esplanade ` will transform the islands' leading industry and the | :00:35. | :00:37.
Waterfront area. The Royal Bank of Canada expressed interest in housing | :00:38. | :00:40.
20% of this development, but has decided to move into the new Dandara | :00:41. | :00:44.
block planned just a bit further up the road. They say the 66`72 | :00:45. | :00:49.
Esplanade development was the most suitable. The loss of this major | :00:50. | :00:56.
bank concretes concerns some politicians had about the finance | :00:57. | :01:00.
centre. The States have got to decide what we do with the master | :01:01. | :01:08.
plan. I do not think personally it works any more. It was designed to | :01:09. | :01:16.
be built in boom times. We have not had boom times for seven years. Do | :01:17. | :01:21.
we need another two million square feet of offices? I do not think so. | :01:22. | :01:26.
And even though there is still no confirmed companies lined up, those | :01:27. | :01:29.
behind the plans say there is still enough interest for the new | :01:30. | :01:32.
Esplanade quarter to go ahead. There is such a shortage of Grade A space. | :01:33. | :01:37.
Now is not the time to be reviewing this master plan. We need certainty, | :01:38. | :01:42.
as to provide the tenants with confidence. Despite these | :01:43. | :01:48.
reassurances, Deputy Power is holding a meeting about concerns for | :01:49. | :01:51.
the future of the Esplanade development. In the meantime, the | :01:52. | :01:54.
hope is that no other finance companies lose interest. | :01:55. | :02:04.
A fourth person arrested in connection with the murder of Colin | :02:05. | :02:07.
Chevalier has been released pending further enquiries. Mr Chevalier was | :02:08. | :02:11.
found dead in his flat in St Helier last Saturday night. Earlier this | :02:12. | :02:13.
week, 35`year`old Darren Neil McCormack appeared in court charged | :02:14. | :02:17.
with his murder. Jersey Police have charged two more | :02:18. | :02:20.
men with dangerous driving, following the death of Vitor | :02:21. | :02:23.
Fernandes on Victoria Avenue. The twenty`two`year`old was killed in a | :02:24. | :02:26.
car crash at First Tower last December. | :02:27. | :02:31.
Talks today between the Union representing baggage handlers at | :02:32. | :02:34.
Jersey Airport and Servisair have been "disappointing" according to | :02:35. | :02:36.
the company. Workers unhappy at reduced hours had voted to take some | :02:37. | :02:39.
form of industrial action, although they won't be going on strike. | :02:40. | :02:43.
Servisair says today's talks, aimed at bringing the two sides together, | :02:44. | :02:51.
didn't end in agreement. The number of mothers breasting | :02:52. | :02:54.
feeding their babies in the Channel Islands falls well behind many | :02:55. | :02:57.
developed countries. Latest figures show that around three`quarters of | :02:58. | :03:00.
new parents try it ` above the UK average, but near the bottom of the | :03:01. | :03:04.
table if you look at the global figures. It is one issue raised in a | :03:05. | :03:08.
report out today looking at the health of Islanders. Penny | :03:09. | :03:12.
Elderfield reports. With Easter just around the corner, | :03:13. | :03:16.
a bit of a treat today for this mother and toddler group. We had | :03:17. | :03:22.
chocolate eggs. Not necessarily that nutritious, but tasty. But when | :03:23. | :03:27.
these mums and grandmothers first had their babies, nutrition`wise | :03:28. | :03:30.
something they would no doubt heard was that breast was best. It gives | :03:31. | :03:35.
them an start a dozen red. A start in life. `` it gives them a start in | :03:36. | :03:47.
life. So the message is getting through to some. But breast`feeding | :03:48. | :03:50.
rates in the Channel Islands are low. 77% of new mums in Guernsey | :03:51. | :03:55.
give it a go, as do 75% in Jersey. On par with in England, but globally | :03:56. | :03:59.
the UK is falling behind ` coming 25th out of the 36 developed | :04:00. | :04:02.
countries. And the States want to improve on those figures. You love | :04:03. | :04:05.
your baby will stop you want to do the best for your baby. The best | :04:06. | :04:15.
thing you can do is breast`feed. The stats on breast`feeding are a small | :04:16. | :04:19.
part of a wider snapshot of the health of the Islands, published | :04:20. | :04:21.
today. Generally life expectancy here is better than the UK, at | :04:22. | :04:25.
around 84 years for women and 79 for men in both Islands. One issue where | :04:26. | :04:29.
there is a difference though is teen pregnancies. In Jersey between 2010 | :04:30. | :04:32.
to 2012 there were on average around 18 a year. But in Guernsey the rate | :04:33. | :04:36.
was more than double that with 87 teenagers falling pregnant during | :04:37. | :04:39.
that time. But both Islands are still below the UK average. But a | :04:40. | :04:42.
problem shared by both Islands is the number of people dying from | :04:43. | :04:46.
preventable illnesses. ` with 17% of deaths in Guernsey and 15% in Jersey | :04:47. | :04:49.
caused by smoking. And for health officials the fact they are | :04:50. | :04:55.
preventable is a key. We still have this big burden of disease. Even | :04:56. | :05:01.
though globally we are doing well in terms of the average length of life, | :05:02. | :05:05.
there are still a lot of preventable deaths here. So whilst we may all on | :05:06. | :05:12.
average be living longer, the report out today gives out a clear message | :05:13. | :05:15.
about some of the health issues still facing the Islands. | :05:16. | :05:21.
In Jersey preparations are under way to amend the employment law to | :05:22. | :05:24.
introduce maternity leave. BBC Channel Islands News spoke to | :05:25. | :05:27.
Jersey's Medical Officer of Health and asked if the current position | :05:28. | :05:30.
meant women were missing out on breast`feeding as they return to | :05:31. | :05:40.
employment. There is a issue about the proportion of women of | :05:41. | :05:43.
child`bearing age who are also working full time and need to go | :05:44. | :05:48.
back to work sooner. That is a fact of these islands. People coming here | :05:49. | :05:55.
to work often have to work full time rather than part`time. I don't think | :05:56. | :06:00.
we can do much about that, but we can do everything we can to | :06:01. | :06:02.
encourage women to breast`feed for as long as possible. Make it easier | :06:03. | :06:09.
for women to express milk if that is what they want to do. | :06:10. | :06:16.
Well, that is all from the late team here on BBC Channel Islands news. | :06:17. | :06:20.
Edward Sault will be back with our next full news bulletin here on BBC | :06:21. | :06:23.
One on Monday evening. In the meantime, BBC Radio Jersey and BBC | :06:24. | :06:26.
Radio Guernsey will keep you up`to`date. Have a lovely weekend | :06:27. | :06:30.
and I'll leave you with Dan Downs and the weather. Good evening. We | :06:31. | :06:33.
have seen some sunshine today and it is looking promising. Fairly light | :06:34. | :06:43.
winds, and drive. Tonight, temperatures will ball away quite | :06:44. | :06:53.
quickly. `` will fall away. Loads of seven or eight degrees. Tomorrow, | :06:54. | :07:02.
some mist initially. Some cloud coming and going throughout the day. | :07:03. | :07:11.
Temperatures again 12`13d. The rest of the weekend, Sunday is looking to | :07:12. | :07:17.
be bright and there is little changed at the beginning of next | :07:18. | :07:23.
week. It will feel quite pleasant. Temperatures around 13`14 degrees. | :07:24. | :07:29.
Have a good weekend. UK, Alex Deakin has the National | :07:30. | :07:31.
forecast for you. Good night. Good evening. This weekend should be | :07:32. | :07:41.
a little brighter than last weekend. Most of us will see spells of | :07:42. | :07:45.
sunshine. Across northern Britain as well as any sunshine there will be a | :07:46. | :07:49.
brisk breeze developing some rain. In the south, generally it should | :07:50. | :07:54.
stay dry with spells of sunshine. In the South at the moment we have | :07:55. | :07:57.
largely clear skies. Hence another cold night. Further north, the wind | :07:58. | :08:01.
is increasing and the cloud bringing persistent rain across western | :08:02. | :08:06.
Scotland. The breeze, rain and cloud keeping it miles. In the south | :08:07. | :08:10.
again, five - six, in towns and cities. In rural areas, not far off | :08:11. | :08:15.
freezing. A chilly start to the weekend. Generally sunny across the | :08:16. | :08:19.
south. It will cloud over through the day but we should hang on to | :08:20. | :08:22.
sunny spells across East Anglia and the south-east. The sun has got some | :08:23. | :08:27.
power in it, it will start to lift the temperatures. By 9am the cloud | :08:28. | :08:32.
is thickening across North Wales and north-west England. Rain | :08:33. | :08:34. |
