Driven out of office ` Guernsey s environment minister resigns over | :00:00. | :00:12.
I really enjoyed the job but I think it is time for someone else to | :00:13. | :00:24.
Leeds. Could Condor be waving | :00:25. | :00:25.
goodbye to Weymouth? And what does it mean for | :00:26. | :00:27.
Channel Islands passengers? Plus, fancy taking in a snake, | :00:28. | :00:30.
spider or even a dragon? The animal shelter trying to | :00:31. | :00:34.
re`home abandoned exotic pets. And reaching every corner | :00:35. | :00:41.
of the Commonwealth ` We are island hopping with the | :00:42. | :00:49.
Queen's baton. the Queen's Baton visits Alderney, | :00:50. | :00:56.
Sark and Herm ` we'll be thdre There's been political fallout | :00:57. | :00:59.
from the decision to introdtce paid parking in Guernsey, with | :01:00. | :01:10.
the environment Minister announcing Two other board members, | :01:11. | :01:12.
Barry Paint and Tony Spruce, And it was on BBC Guernsey | :01:13. | :01:17.
the public heard the news fhrst Our main story this morning is that | :01:18. | :01:32.
the environment minister has resigned, following yesterd`y's | :01:33. | :01:37.
votes to introduce paid parking I really just cannot support paid | :01:38. | :01:42.
parking. I think it is unfahr. Laptop to Barry Paint. You `re | :01:43. | :01:51.
resigning to? I absolutely `m. Where does this leave your political | :01:52. | :01:57.
career? I shall be resigning as well. I am fundamentally ag`inst the | :01:58. | :02:00.
paid parking which I think hs just ridiculous. | :02:01. | :02:01.
Their decision to resign was due to the States approving plans | :02:02. | :02:04.
All three were against the hdea ` but politicians yesterday ddcided | :02:05. | :02:08.
it was the best way to pay for a number of initiatives to cut | :02:09. | :02:12.
Much like buses, when one resignation crops tp, | :02:13. | :02:17.
Roger Domaille, Barry Paint and Tony Spruce have all quit Environment. | :02:18. | :02:23.
Not that it came as that much of a shock to States members | :02:24. | :02:26.
I'm not surprised. I think ht's the honourable thing to do. | :02:27. | :02:40.
A strategy that included ond thing all three of them didn't want ` | :02:41. | :02:43.
They voted for paid parking. Whilst I enjoy the job, and I do thoroughly | :02:44. | :02:54.
enjoy being the environment minister, I think it is somdone else | :02:55. | :02:59.
`` time for someone else to lead on the paper. | :03:00. | :03:01.
And with another few resign`tions to add to the list, the number since | :03:02. | :03:04.
the current States was elected is rapidly approaching the twenties. | :03:05. | :03:07.
If a department proposal is rejected, then people tend to | :03:08. | :03:16.
resign. It tends to happen on issues which divides the public. | :03:17. | :03:18.
Of course as soon as the news of a resignation breaks ` | :03:19. | :03:22.
so does the talk about who'll take on that Minister title. | :03:23. | :03:25.
And it looks like one of the politicians who pushdd | :03:26. | :03:27.
for paid parking is already emerging as a favourite to take | :03:28. | :03:30.
She is still thinking about whether she wants to take the job. The | :03:31. | :03:47.
subject of paid parking is on most people's minds. That won't happen | :03:48. | :03:48.
for at least a year. So it'll be a while | :03:49. | :03:53.
before it all actually happdns. And with the public as split | :03:54. | :03:56.
on the idea of paid parking as the politicians were, | :03:57. | :04:00.
whoever is in charge will h`ve a tough job convincing everxone the | :04:01. | :04:02.
States have got it right thhs time. The UK Government is going to being | :04:03. | :04:09.
asked to stump up ?10 million to try and safeguard the ferry link between | :04:10. | :04:13.
the Channel Islands and Weylouth. The ferry operator Condor is | :04:14. | :04:16.
considering replacing its ctrrent ferries with a new high spedd | :04:17. | :04:19.
trimaran, but refurbishments would have to take place at Weymotth for | :04:20. | :04:21.
the new vessel to operate there Edward Sault reports Arriving | :04:22. | :04:26.
in to Jersey from Weymouth and Guernsey ` today's sailhngs to | :04:27. | :04:29.
and from the Channel Islands and the Dorset port were running | :04:30. | :04:31.
as normal, but for how much longer? Condor wants to buy | :04:32. | :04:35.
a new vessel like this one but it's too big to operate in | :04:36. | :04:38.
and out of Weymouth harbour. Now there is real fear pullhng | :04:39. | :04:41.
out could damage both the Channel It does make a big difference. For | :04:42. | :04:53.
tourists coming to Weymouth to have the option of going through | :04:54. | :04:59.
Guernsey, or using it as a base to go on to France. | :05:00. | :05:00.
And this isn't the first tile the future of | :05:01. | :05:02.
the island?s links to Weymotth have been brought into the spotlhght | :05:03. | :05:05.
In 2012, the Condor link was pulled after major repairs were | :05:06. | :05:08.
In a statement, Condor Ferries say they valte their | :05:09. | :05:16.
I am confident that the cause is a good one. Services will continue for | :05:17. | :05:32.
now. But many want to know hf the service's days are numbered. | :05:33. | :05:38.
Well Edward is live in the studio now and Edward we ve | :05:39. | :05:41.
heard concern from hoteliers there in Weymouth and that is matched here | :05:42. | :05:44.
They told me there is fresh cause for concern because Jersey still | :05:45. | :05:55.
haven't upgraded its wrap lhcense. They stay that needs to be done | :05:56. | :06:00.
soon. Condor have given us great service over the years but now they | :06:01. | :06:06.
need to reinvest in new vessels At the moment, we are discussing with | :06:07. | :06:10.
the authorities in Jersey, for long`term licenses to be arranged. | :06:11. | :06:17.
This has to be resolved within the next couple of months. We are in an | :06:18. | :06:21.
election year and if it is not resolved, it will probably go on | :06:22. | :06:29.
until next year. In a statelent Condor said they are working closely | :06:30. | :06:33.
with all the interested parties including Weymouth and is Borough | :06:34. | :06:41.
Council. `` Weymouth and Portland Borough Council. | :06:42. | :06:44.
You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. | :06:45. | :06:54.
For many people, their ideal pet is a cat or a dog. | :06:55. | :06:57.
But do you have room in your life for a green`bellied iguana, | :06:58. | :07:01.
Well, they're just two of more than 20 exotic animals which have | :07:02. | :07:07.
They're not exactly cute and cuddly and they won't bd much | :07:08. | :07:15.
use in a game of fetch, but these creatures make up a batch | :07:16. | :07:19.
of 22 exotic animals rescued by Jersey's animal charity this week. | :07:20. | :07:23.
Although the JSPCA has a reptile room, it didn't have enough space or | :07:24. | :07:27.
equipment to properly house so many and had to create another. | :07:28. | :07:32.
The head of the charity is hopeful many of them will find new homes. | :07:33. | :07:42.
Snakes seem to do very well in Jersey and we do have | :07:43. | :07:45.
a number of individuals who're very keen on corn snakes | :07:46. | :07:48.
The Californian King snake `nd the Pythons may be a bit more dhfficult. | :07:49. | :07:54.
But I think they'll be reholed relatively quickly once thex've | :07:55. | :07:56.
passed the necessary veterinary chdcks | :07:57. | :07:58.
And of course the cost of keeping these animals has to be | :07:59. | :08:01.
considered, as well with the charity spending ?250 pdr day. | :08:02. | :08:04.
The temperature in this rool is 30 degrees and will rise to 32 degrees. | :08:05. | :08:08.
Uncomfortable for me but conditions for these creatures have to mimic | :08:09. | :08:11.
And it's not just the heat ` these unusual pets have manx | :08:12. | :08:16.
The charity wants courts to take a tougher line with people who are | :08:17. | :08:21.
Just because you can have it, doesn't mean it's the right thing to | :08:22. | :08:27.
do and I do find it's particularly galling when people take on exotic | :08:28. | :08:30.
creatures without realising they live incredibly long lives, and of | :08:31. | :08:33.
course their requirements bdcome quite significant and if yot really | :08:34. | :08:36.
can't maintain that for perhaps 20 or 30 years, should you really be | :08:37. | :08:39.
But until these animals are checked and hopefully rehomed, they're | :08:40. | :08:44.
Well, today is the last day that the Queen's baton is in the Channel | :08:45. | :08:59.
islands ` it heads to the Isle of Man tomorrow. | :09:00. | :09:04.
It's had a day of island hopping ` visiting Alderney, Herm and Sark. | :09:05. | :09:10.
1997, the first time Jersey hosted the Island Games. | :09:11. | :09:13.
A lot has changed since then ` the fashion, the competitors ` | :09:14. | :09:18.
and now the location for the opening and closing cerdmonies. | :09:19. | :09:23.
They will take place here at Howard Davis Park when Jersdy hosts | :09:24. | :09:27.
It will also be used throughout the week to bring competitors together. | :09:28. | :09:35.
This tranquil, peaceful and rather empty park will be transforled | :09:36. | :09:38.
into an island games villagd ` where thousands of athletes can | :09:39. | :09:42.
come and unwind and socialise after a day of competition. | :09:43. | :09:46.
Organisers told me they had re`considered Springfield | :09:47. | :09:49.
as the venue, but this park ticked all thd boxes. | :09:50. | :09:58.
When we came here, this sort of hidden gem, just on the edgd of | :09:59. | :10:06.
town, we thought it was perfect for us. It is big, beautiful and | :10:07. | :10:12.
self`contained. Over 50% of the competitors will be able to walk | :10:13. | :10:18.
there from their hotel. We will have a fully equipped medical centre a | :10:19. | :10:25.
main stage area and a VIP lounge. At the top end of the park, we will | :10:26. | :10:31.
have the genuine Jersey produce so we can showcase Jersey at its best. | :10:32. | :10:33.
Those in walking distance h`ve been informed | :10:34. | :10:35.
about the decision to open the park to almost 4,000 athletes from around | :10:36. | :10:39.
I think it's very exciting `nd I think the area has a long tradition | :10:40. | :10:54.
of hosting tourists. I think that is continuing in that spirit. H think | :10:55. | :10:59.
it will be an inspiration for the young families who live arotnd here. | :11:00. | :11:00.
This park may sit on the edge of St Helier, | :11:01. | :11:03.
but for the week of the Isl`nd Games it will be the heart of the island?s | :11:04. | :11:07.
Well, today is the last day that the Queen's baton is in the Channel | :11:08. | :11:20.
islands ` it heads to the Isle of Man tomorrow. | :11:21. | :11:23.
It's had a day of island hopping ` visiting Alderney, Herm and Sark. | :11:24. | :11:26.
Tonight a special celebration is underway at Guernsey's Footds Lane | :11:27. | :11:42.
Thanks Clare, I'm here at the beating heart | :11:43. | :11:54.
We've got 100 metre races tonight. My training group will be rtnning. | :11:55. | :12:03.
We will be testing various times, may be looking at the Commonwealth | :12:04. | :12:06.
games standards. That may bd far`fetched but we will see by | :12:07. | :12:12.
Monday night. Having the Quden's baton come here to your homd | :12:13. | :12:15.
islands, how does that make you feel? It's a great honour. The | :12:16. | :12:23.
Commonwealth Games is the ndxt biggest international sporthng | :12:24. | :12:29.
events to the Olympics. To have the baton, that represents that events, | :12:30. | :12:33.
in our island is fantastic. It's a great occasion. I would imagine the | :12:34. | :12:39.
Commonwealth games ` if you get there, that would be the pinnacle of | :12:40. | :12:43.
your summary. How challenging do you find it to try to keep up whth the | :12:44. | :12:48.
best, in terms of times and finance requirement? Those two in | :12:49. | :12:53.
particular, I guess, providd separate challenges in themselves. I | :12:54. | :12:57.
naturally, travelling from Guernsey all the time to find the | :12:58. | :13:03.
competitions can be a great burden. At the same time, you do it for the | :13:04. | :13:07.
love of the sports. Trying to compete against the best is | :13:08. | :13:14.
obviously a challenge as well. Trying to improve whilst having a | :13:15. | :13:21.
full`time job alongside it, which is the same for all the local `thletes, | :13:22. | :13:23.
is a particular challenge. Almost a quarter of that was spent | :13:24. | :13:43.
on transport getting off thd island. Then more than ?700 in travdl | :13:44. | :13:47.
costs once on the mainland. In addition, nearly ?16500 paid | :13:48. | :13:54.
for accommodation. Jersey's swimming coach has told us | :13:55. | :13:58.
the cost of competing is Swimming is becoming a rich man s | :13:59. | :14:12.
sport. Europe normal person wouldn't necessarily find the opporttnity. `` | :14:13. | :14:16.
your average person. So how do athletes raise | :14:17. | :14:19.
the money to compete? Well our reporter Louise | :14:20. | :14:21.
Walter has been finding out. Mark Constable has hit the standard | :14:22. | :14:33.
to qualify for the Commonwe`lth games. But he have to go off islands | :14:34. | :14:39.
to compete. That has cost around ?3000. It is partially the price of | :14:40. | :14:48.
living on an island. Coming from the mainland to play to an immense, it's | :14:49. | :14:52.
just the price of petrol and a car. Over here, it takes planning. | :14:53. | :14:58.
Especially, when you have to get back in time for work. It's not a | :14:59. | :15:03.
hassle but it takes a lot of organisation. Obviously, yot are | :15:04. | :15:08.
dependent on some funding or sponsorship. That's the onlx way you | :15:09. | :15:15.
can do it. He was lucky enotgh to get a grant to help with those | :15:16. | :15:21.
travel costs. The organisathon supports 50 athletes, both | :15:22. | :15:22.
financially and through a training programme. We found multipld things | :15:23. | :15:30.
from medical support to strdngth and conditioning. A lot of travdl and | :15:31. | :15:36.
training costs and addition`l coaching. There is a whole lultitude | :15:37. | :15:42.
of things that they need help with, so we try to help them as mtch as we | :15:43. | :15:47.
can. Jersey States do provide some funding, as does Guernsey's Sports | :15:48. | :15:56.
Commission. Jana is hoping to run for Jersey and turn to online crowd | :15:57. | :16:00.
funding after advice from Olympian Andrew Steele. She needed ?700 for a | :16:01. | :16:09.
training trip to Florida. I wrote on Facebook about going to Florida and | :16:10. | :16:14.
lots of people liked it. It costs a lot of money to be a full`thme | :16:15. | :16:17.
athlete so I thought if I could get any help that would be great. She | :16:18. | :16:24.
raised more than enough and since the training has `` she says her | :16:25. | :16:35.
training has moved faster than ever. Guernsey's and has been on the | :16:36. | :16:38.
cycling scene for 20 years, and other profile has grown, it has | :16:39. | :16:43.
become easier to get sponsors. She says that is key any athletd. | :16:44. | :16:49.
Definitely. One of the things is how the public perceives you. I think | :16:50. | :16:54.
that is really quite crucial, and it is having that good business sense. | :16:55. | :16:59.
You need to put yourself out there. That might be quite difficult for | :17:00. | :17:05.
some people, if you are shy. Being able to be canny as well as | :17:06. | :17:06.
competitive. The BBC approached all | :17:07. | :17:09.
the major travel companies providing Flybe says it provides discounts to | :17:10. | :17:11.
sports teams and Condor Ferries say it operates | :17:12. | :17:16.
a 15 percent discount through A lovely evening to day and more to | :17:17. | :17:42.
come over the next few days. As we move from the weekend into the early | :17:43. | :17:46.
part of next week, the high pressure starts to leave us. Tomorrow, it's | :17:47. | :17:51.
another fine and warm day whth light winds. Some strong sunshine. | :17:52. | :18:00.
Tomorrow, moderates `` a moderate pollen count. You need to sdt your | :18:01. | :18:08.
barometer `` if you need to set your barometer, now is a good tile to do | :18:09. | :18:15.
it. This is where all the r`in is, a long way from us. It is movhng up | :18:16. | :18:20.
across Scotland. We have thd area of high pressure which is here to stay. | :18:21. | :18:26.
It slips a little bit furthdr south through tomorrow, and then `s we | :18:27. | :18:29.
head into the weekend it becomes a little weaker. These two we`ther | :18:30. | :18:34.
systems are poised to make ` change, but probably not until the dnd of | :18:35. | :18:40.
the weekend. Some pretty good temperatures in store. Overnight, | :18:41. | :18:44.
two night, and maybe few showers. Some low cloud around. Tempdrature | :18:45. | :18:51.
is just getting into single figures, probably dropping down as | :18:52. | :18:57.
low as 9 degrees. Women's rhghts and maybe coming from the East or | :18:58. | :19:04.
Northeast. `` winds are light. Patchy cloud will come and go | :19:05. | :19:09.
through the evening. That shouldn't change the day very much. North`east | :19:10. | :19:14.
winds and temperatures ranghng from 16 or 17 on the coast to inland | :19:15. | :19:18.
temperatures as much as 18 or 1 degrees. The winds are from the | :19:19. | :19:26.
north`east for three to four. Generally good visibility. Times of | :19:27. | :19:35.
high water: Not much for our surfers, the surf is disappointing. | :19:36. | :19:40.
Flat waves up to maybe about one foot or two foot if you werd lucky. | :19:41. | :19:45.
The outlook looks promising until we get towards the end of the weekend. | :19:46. | :19:49.
Into Monday, there is the rhsk of some showery outbreaks of r`in. You | :19:50. | :19:57.

photographs. Jersey's health department `re | :20:02. | :20:13.
considering working with thd Isle of Man to look at independent | :20:14. | :20:16.
regulation across the health system. Hospitals in both islands are | :20:17. | :20:19.
currently self`regulated, although Jersey benchmarks htself | :20:20. | :20:20.
against similar jurisdictions or the UK in comparable areas | :20:21. | :20:23.
of the health service. The health minister has been | :20:24. | :20:25.
discussing ways to work togdther to create regulation suitable | :20:26. | :20:28.
for island jurisdictions We are looking at setting up a | :20:29. | :20:43.
commission. We do other are`s of inspection, but that is all still to | :20:44. | :20:48.
happen over the next couple of years. Discussions have to happen. | :20:49. | :20:57.
If you have any other questhons about Jersey's Hospital services, | :20:58. | :21:05.
there is an hour`long show tomorrow morning on BBC radio Jersey. I will | :21:06. | :21:06.
be back at 8pm. largest wave will be on the north | :21:07. | :25:35.
coast. But it is no more th`n two feet. Sea temperature around 12 | :25:36. | :25:40.
degrees. There is the coast`l waters forecast. The winds from thd | :25:41. | :25:45.
north`east. A gentle breeze. But quickly it becomes variable as the | :25:46. | :25:50.
sea breezes development gendrally fair. The outlook is good for both | :25:51. | :25:57.
Saturday and Sunday. More around on `` cloud around on Sunday. 06 or 17 | :25:58. | :26:04.
