European elections. There is ` first look at the papers on the .ewq | :00:00. | :00:08.
European elections. There is ` first Good Evening. The UK Independence | :00:09. | :00:11.
Party is celebrating after topping the poll in the South West Duropean | :00:12. | :00:14.
Elections. But it wasn't enough to get an extra MEP. The Conservatives | :00:15. | :00:21.
were pushed into second place and Labour regained the seat thdy lost | :00:22. | :00:26.
last time. There was surprise success for the Greens, who made | :00:27. | :00:29.
history by taking a seat here for the first time. But the big losers | :00:30. | :00:33.
were the Lib Dems who now h`ve no MEP's in the region. Here's our | :00:34. | :00:40.
political editor Martyn Oatds. They got the backing of the | :00:41. | :00:43.
billboards during the campahgn and when it came to polling day they got | :00:44. | :00:50.
the backing of the voters as well. As the counting took place, the | :00:51. | :00:53.
party polled most votes in places from Cornwall to Weymouth and | :00:54. | :00:55.
Portland and from Plymouth to South Somerset via Torbay. 140,000 more | :00:56. | :01:03.
votes than in 2009, but the party only ended up with the same number | :01:04. | :01:09.
of MEPs. Two. Five years ago, we got about four | :01:10. | :01:12.
first places. This time we got at least 20 to 30 first places, and | :01:13. | :01:15.
that gives us a marvellous platform to go forward. | :01:16. | :01:19.
The Conservatives came top hn a few areas but this was a night they | :01:20. | :01:28.
mostly came in second place. More than 30,000 fewer votes than last | :01:29. | :01:31.
time saw their MEPs dropped from three to two. | :01:32. | :01:36.
People felt that they could have a free go. And they have had ` bit of | :01:37. | :01:40.
a go. But as it happens in the south`west they haven't rettrned any | :01:41. | :01:43.
more MEPs than they had before, so I don't see this is going to be | :01:44. | :01:47.
repeated next year in the gdneral election, but I'm not compl`cent | :01:48. | :01:52.
about that. UKIP and the Greens fought out the | :01:53. | :01:58.
final seat to be announced. History was then made as the region gained | :01:59. | :02:01.
its first Green MEP. Well, I've been in the Green party | :02:02. | :02:05.
for 25 years now, and I've lost very, very many elections, so it is | :02:06. | :02:08.
actually a wonderful feeling to have won one. It is a huge | :02:09. | :02:11.
responsibility, but I am looking forward to what I can achieve in | :02:12. | :02:14.
Europe. It's a great opporttnity for the Greens in the south west. | :02:15. | :02:20.
Labour managed to regain thd seat it lost last time, thanks to places | :02:21. | :02:23.
like Exeter where it topped the poll. | :02:24. | :02:25.
We need to make sure the European Union works for the people of the | :02:26. | :02:29.
south west, and that is acttally what I regard as my primary task as | :02:30. | :02:33.
an MEP for the region. It is to bring jobs and investment into the | :02:34. | :02:36.
region over the coming five years. The big losers were the Libdral | :02:37. | :02:43.
Democrats. They came fifth `cross the region and lost an MEP of 2 | :02:44. | :02:47.
years standing. A particular blow in a region they have traditionally | :02:48. | :02:49.
regarded as one of their strongholds. | :02:50. | :02:59.
And Martin joins me in the studio. So, a dramatic night, Martin. | :03:00. | :03:02.
Yes, and one with a twist, because this was expected to be a bhg | :03:03. | :03:05.
contest between the Conserv`tives and UKIP as to which could walk away | :03:06. | :03:09.
with the lion's share of thd seats but as we have seen the Gredn Party | :03:10. | :03:12.
actually denied both UKIP and the Tories that crucial third sdat. | :03:13. | :03:15.
Which suggests that voters `re fed up with the Westminster parties and | :03:16. | :03:18.
are looking elsewhere. They may be looking beyond just UKIP to other | :03:19. | :03:20.
alternatives. Quite a come`down for the Lhb Dems | :03:21. | :03:23.
in what is traditionally ond of their strongholds. | :03:24. | :03:26.
Yes, the Lib Dems were so long a prominent force across the region | :03:27. | :03:29.
and if you drill down into the details of some of these results, it | :03:30. | :03:32.
is still more depressing for them seeing their nose`dive in rdal | :03:33. | :03:34.
heartlands like Paddy Ashdown's old constituency in South Somerset. But | :03:35. | :03:37.
we know that people tend to vote very often in a different w`y in the | :03:38. | :03:41.
European elections than in domestic elections, and if we look at local | :03:42. | :03:44.
elections in the region since the coalition formed, they have been by | :03:45. | :03:47.
no means disastrous for the Lib Dems. They regained a lot of seats | :03:48. | :03:50.
on Cornwall Council last ye`r, and the other interesting thing is that | :03:51. | :03:53.
the Lib Dems have never dond particularly well in Europe`n | :03:54. | :03:54.
elections. OK, Martin. Thank you for joining | :03:55. | :04:05.
me. A male holiday`maker sufferdd broken | :04:06. | :04:08.
bones after being pushed from a restaurant balcony into thedstuary | :04:09. | :04:10.
at Salcombe, Devon and Cornwall Police have said. The inciddnt | :04:11. | :04:13.
happened at the Island Stredt Bar and Grill on Sunday night. Officers | :04:14. | :04:16.
are appealing for witnesses to come forward. | :04:17. | :04:22.
The organisers of the Devon County Show say they're offering a full | :04:23. | :04:25.
refund to everyone who bought tickets for last Saturday, but were | :04:26. | :04:28.
unable to use them. The third and final day of the show was c`ncelled, | :04:29. | :04:32.
for the first time in the event s history, following heavy rahn which | :04:33. | :04:34.
made the car parks potentially unsafe. Organisers said abandoning | :04:35. | :04:38.
the show would have a significant financial impact but they w`nted to | :04:39. | :04:48.
do right by their paying customers. Thousands of pirates flocked to the | :04:49. | :04:51.
promenade in Penzance this afternoon, to try and win b`ck the | :04:52. | :04:54.
world record for the most ntmber of people dressed as the scurvx | :04:55. | :04:57.
seadogs. The Cornish port lost the title to Hastings two years ago But | :04:58. | :05:02.
as David George reports, thdy narrowly missed out on winnhng it | :05:03. | :05:07.
back. The battle with the Sussex town is | :05:08. | :05:17.
underway. After all, the Pirates of Hastings doesn't have the rhght ring | :05:18. | :05:21.
to it, does it? The Pirates of Penzance were everywhere. Strely | :05:22. | :05:24.
there has never been so much timber shivered, so many swashes btckled or | :05:25. | :05:27.
rogers jollied? In order to break this record, they had to be`t | :05:28. | :05:34.
Hastings. But Hastings are here You scurvy crew, you're armed to the | :05:35. | :05:37.
teeth, aren't you? We are, yes. Well, we are d`ngerous | :05:38. | :05:41.
people in Penzance. And what draws you to this dvent? | :05:42. | :05:45.
It's Pirates Day, for goodndss sake! Isn't it, girls? Ra! | :05:46. | :05:51.
I think the people that looked strangest now are people th`t aren't | :05:52. | :05:54.
addressed as pirates. They want to make a world rdcord. We | :05:55. | :05:59.
did it last time, and we will do it again this year. | :06:00. | :06:00.
What happened to your eye? OH, just a cutlass. | :06:01. | :06:08.
Ooh, nasty. In the end, there were 14,154 Pirates of Penzance. 77 short | :06:09. | :06:13.
of a new world record. I love it, mate. Keep to thd cove. | :06:14. | :06:25.
That's the news this Bank Holiday Monday, so I'll say good night and | :06:26. | :06:28.
leave you with Ian Fergusson who has the weather forecast. | :06:29. | :06:32.
Hello. A very good evening to you. Now, generally speaking, we should | :06:33. | :06:37.
fare quite well tomorrow in terms of a fair amount of dry and brhght | :06:38. | :06:40.
weather about. The threat of some showers, as well. We have sden a few | :06:41. | :06:44.
of those during the course of today, and through the course of tomorrow | :06:45. | :06:47.
most of the showers and showery outbreaks of rain will tend to be up | :06:48. | :06:50.
towards the east and north`dast parts of Dorset and Somerset, for | :06:51. | :06:53.
example. Temperatures getting down to about eight to 11 Celsius by the | :06:54. | :06:56.
time we're through towards daybreak tomorrow. Now, tomorrow shotld bring | :06:57. | :06:59.
a fair amount of dry and brhght weather, particularly across parts | :07:00. | :07:01.
of Cornwall and Devon. Convdrsely, come further up towards the north | :07:02. | :07:05.
and the east and there's more in the way of cloud around, with some | :07:06. | :07:08.
showery outbreaks. A few showers breaking out elsewhere as wdll | :07:09. | :07:10.
throughout the course of thd day. For the Channel Islands, I think we | :07:11. | :07:14.
should have a dry day all the way through with a fair and of sunshine | :07:15. | :07:17.
around, so like I said it is something of mixed fortunes. A | :07:18. | :07:20.
moderate breeze for us all. Temperatures tomorrow getting up to | :07:21. | :07:23.
14 Celsius to 16 Celsius for the majority, maybe as high as 07 | :07:24. | :07:26.
Celsius in a couple of spots. The outlook is a similar story for the | :07:27. | :07:30.
rest of this week as well. Next we have Louise Lear with your national | :07:31. | :07:38.
The month of May is often thought of as the transition from Spring into | :07:39. | :07:45.
summer. It can have a variety of weather. We've seen just that in | :07:46. | :07:48.
just one day. In | :07:49. | :07:49. |
