Here in Glasgow, a top ten finish for a Guernsey cyclist, and crunch

:00:10.:00:29.

matches for our badminton and table tennis players. We'll bring you all

:00:30.:00:34.

the action. Ic the next couple of days a bit of a change for the

:00:35.:00:39.

islands, as it turns more unsettled. I'll have all the details later in

:00:40.:00:42.

the programme. After a wait of 24 years, Jersey is

:00:43.:00:52.

a step closer to a Commonwealth Games medal tonight. It's after the

:00:53.:00:57.

island's bowls pairs lost to South Africa earlier. Live to Glasgow now

:00:58.:01:10.

and Edward Sault. Yes, Clare. There really is a sense of excitement

:01:11.:01:13.

after that result today after the disappointment in shooting for Team

:01:14.:01:17.

Jersey this week. Now the focus is on bowls, and although Jersey's

:01:18.:01:19.

Katie Nixon and Lindsey Greechan lost to South Africa, it means

:01:20.:01:22.

they're now in the third place play`off and touching distance of a

:01:23.:01:34.

bronze medal. A bronze medal is in touching distance for Jersey

:01:35.:01:37.

tonight. Emma Chambers brings you all the action.

:01:38.:01:41.

Warming up for their toughest match. Jersey lawn bowlers Katie Nixon and

:01:42.:01:44.

Lindsey Greechan were up against Australia in the pairs quarterfinal.

:01:45.:01:49.

The first big step to medal success. Until today, Jersey haven't had to

:01:50.:01:52.

win every match. They've just had to score enough points to finish in the

:01:53.:01:56.

top two of their group to qualify. Today, that all changes. Jersey have

:01:57.:02:00.

to win in order to get through to the semifinals. It was a positive

:02:01.:02:03.

start for Jersey. They were the first to score, with a four`point

:02:04.:02:08.

lead. But Australia soon caught up and dominated most of the game.

:02:09.:02:13.

Jersey held on and made sure every point counted. By 15 ends the score

:02:14.:02:19.

was equal with everything still to play for. A tense watch for

:02:20.:02:25.

supporters. Jersey put on an astonishing performance. This last

:02:26.:02:29.

bowl from Greechan sealed the win 16`11 against Australia, securing

:02:30.:02:31.

the islanders a place in the semifinal. A powerful but daunting

:02:32.:02:43.

position for the Lawn bowls team. It's the biggest event really.

:02:44.:02:48.

Jersey's never ever won a medal, so to get this far now, it is crucial.

:02:49.:02:53.

These chances don't come along. That's the hardest thing. Over the

:02:54.:02:58.

years as people have got to this point where we are now and fallen at

:02:59.:03:03.

the last hurdle. Obviously we want to do it and we'll try our hardest

:03:04.:03:12.

but it is another step. During the short break, the rain

:03:13.:03:16.

poured. But the sun shone as the semifinals began. Jersey were

:03:17.:03:18.

playing against South Africa. A tough opponent. Again the islanders

:03:19.:03:21.

were the first to score. But their luck soon changed. The jack kept

:03:22.:03:25.

getting surrounded by a sea of South Africa's bowls. Halfway through the

:03:26.:03:28.

match, South Africa were in a comfortable lead and there was no

:03:29.:03:32.

stopping them. The points difference grew wider and wider, making it

:03:33.:03:36.

harder for the Jersey pair to catch up. They scored a few points, but

:03:37.:03:42.

not enough to qualify for the final. South Africa won 20`9 in 17 ends.

:03:43.:03:49.

The morning of elation was followed by an afternoon of disappointment

:03:50.:03:52.

for the Jersey pair, but there is still a bronze`tinted glimmer of

:03:53.:03:54.

hope to play for. So, that playoff is against Northern

:03:55.:04:08.

Ireland in the morning. My colleague, Tim Pryor, spoke to

:04:09.:04:11.

Lindsey and Katie after that defeat by South Africa. So not to be for

:04:12.:04:19.

Jersey's duo in that semifinal against South Africa. They are

:04:20.:04:23.

alongside me now, Lindsey Greechan and Katie Nixon. How are you feeling

:04:24.:04:27.

after semifinal defeat but still with a chance to win a medal here?

:04:28.:04:31.

Still made up we have got a chance of a medal but it is really

:04:32.:04:37.

difficult. I feel a bit deflated. We didn't play to our best, so a

:04:38.:04:41.

business disappointed. Katie, how excited are you about this

:04:42.:04:44.

opportunity going into the match tomorrow to possibly win Jersey's

:04:45.:04:50.

first Commonwealth games medal in 24 years? I'm glad we've got another

:04:51.:04:54.

chance. Disappointed for the next couple of hours but we'll pick

:04:55.:04:59.

ourselves up tomorrow and we'll beite fighting for it. Do you think

:05:00.:05:07.

you'll sleep well tonight? No! We should be alright. We've slept well

:05:08.:05:12.

every day we've Ben here because we are so tired with all the bowling.

:05:13.:05:16.

Get a good night's sleep and we've still got a chance. Disappoint here

:05:17.:05:22.

at Kelvin Grove today but a chance to put that right tomorrow and maybe

:05:23.:05:28.

win Jersey a medal in nearly a quarter of a century. That play`off

:05:29.:05:35.

match is at 8.45am tomorrow. That's against Northern Ireland.

:05:36.:05:46.

Elsewhere, a top ten finish for Jersey's

:05:47.:05:48.

Was former England number one versus current England number one on the

:05:49.:05:56.

badminton court. Elizabeth Cann played for England at the last

:05:57.:05:59.

Commonwealth Games. This time she's playing for Jersey and was against

:06:00.:06:04.

Sarah Walker in the last 16. They expect that Elizabeth can follow

:06:05.:06:08.

pace in the beginning but they also expect that Sarah Walker will be

:06:09.:06:13.

pulling away. Walker took the first game and Elizabeth Cann won the

:06:14.:06:17.

second. It all came down to a thrilling finish in game three. Cann

:06:18.:06:23.

pulled clear. Walker fought back, but could she hold her nerve?

:06:24.:06:29.

COMMENTATOR: She's missed it! But she didn't miss many more, as walker

:06:30.:06:35.

held on and beat Cann 21`18 in the last game. Dawn Morgan and Alice

:06:36.:06:41.

Loveridge won one and lost one in their

:06:42.:06:51.

lost to the same Canadian player in the singles last night. There are no

:06:52.:06:56.

Channel Islanders left in the table tennis competition.

:06:57.:07:01.

On the road, Jezzy's Patrick McLoughlin pushed off with a Number

:07:02.:07:06.

Ten on his back. Little did he know he would come in tenth place with

:07:07.:07:12.

the impressive time of which 50 minutes 39en 64 seconds. We'll be at

:07:13.:07:22.

that bowls match tomorrow. You can keep up to date with the

:07:23.:07:25.

action as it happens throughout the day on BBC Radio Guernsey and BBC

:07:26.:07:30.

Radio Jersey tomorrow, as well as online. More from Glasgow on BBC One

:07:31.:07:31.

tomorrow night, airport without it. Staying with

:07:32.:08:54.

travel news. Condor is bringing in another ship to carry goods to the

:08:55.:08:59.

Channel Islands. It will help bring freight supplies back to norm while

:09:00.:09:04.

the Clipper is repaired. It was damaged two weeks ago.

:09:05.:09:09.

The Holidays for Heroes shop in Jersey has closed after the site was

:09:10.:09:12.

sold to a developer. The charity, which gives holidays to injured

:09:13.:09:15.

servicemen, doubled its income after being given the space for free in

:09:16.:09:18.

Chateau Plaisir nearly two years ago. Now organisers are hoping to

:09:19.:09:22.

find a new location for the shop, which sells books, clothes and

:09:23.:09:28.

furniture. As I understand it, the site is being sold tomorrow and

:09:29.:09:32.

obviously everything on site has to leave. We knew this day would come.

:09:33.:09:38.

We are obviously sad but we are still so grateful for two brilliant

:09:39.:09:43.

years. As July comes to a close and we look ahead to August, David

:09:44.:09:47.

Braine has news of a weather change on the cards.

:09:48.:09:51.

Good evening. We've got unsettled Weatherheading our way in the next

:09:52.:10:01.

two days. A risk of showers as we start the weekend. After a dry start

:10:02.:10:07.

and some sunny spells, showers will develop and become widespread by the

:10:08.:10:11.

end of the day. For our athletes taking part in the bowling, tomorrow

:10:12.:10:15.

could be damp in Glasgow, with outbreaks of rain. Turning brighter

:10:16.:10:19.

towards the end of the morning and afternoon. A top temperature of

:10:20.:10:23.

around 15`16 degrees. The reason for the change, a lot

:10:24.:10:28.

more cloud. That is sweeping in off the Atlantic. An area of low

:10:29.:10:33.

pressure will gradually push these weather systems closer. This is the

:10:34.:10:36.

middle of the day tomorrow. Notice this line of rain off the western

:10:37.:10:40.

coast of France for the middle of the day. That's the threat of

:10:41.:10:43.

showers coming our way as we move through the day. Certainly for

:10:44.:10:47.

Saturday we've got low pressure in charge and plenty of showers to

:10:48.:10:51.

contend with. Not much happening overnight. We may

:10:52.:10:56.

increase the amount of medium and high`level cloud. Generally clouding

:10:57.:11:04.

up by dawn, with the chance of a few showers towardsed any and Guernsey.

:11:05.:11:12.

`` towards Alderney and Guernsey. For the rest of us we keep a lot of

:11:13.:11:19.

cloud. By the end of the afternoon the showers start to appear.

:11:20.:11:24.

Top temperature tomorrow 19`21 degrees.

:11:25.:11:44.

More showers on Saturday but drier on Monday and Tuesday.

:11:45.:12:39.

Justice says Channings Wood is a safe and decent prison with low

:12:40.:12:42.

levels of violence. Mainly roadworks are planned on the

:12:43.:12:46.

A 38 which will last a year. It is to replace a bridge that has

:12:47.:12:50.

concrete cancer. The work is due to start in the spring and will involve

:12:51.:12:57.

camera flows and narrow lanes. Life Guards have released this

:12:58.:13:01.

footage of a young girl being rescued to highlight the danger of

:13:02.:13:06.

rip curse. She got into difficulty at Chapel Porthnear St Agnes

:13:07.:13:10.

yesterday. She's the ninth person to be saved on the beach in recent

:13:11.:13:16.

days. Storms have created offshore Sandbanks which allow rip currents

:13:17.:13:20.

to form. It's been another successful day at

:13:21.:13:27.

the Commonwealth Games with two silver medals guaranteed. Tonia

:13:28.:13:33.

Couch and Sandra Barrow have been in action, alongside England's youngest

:13:34.:13:42.

member. The first dive in a major games for 13`year`old Victoria

:13:43.:13:49.

Vincents. What a marvellous opening round dive! And not a hint of

:13:50.:13:55.

nerves. Just 13 years of age. For VV as she was known it was the

:13:56.:13:59.

experience to experience the atmosphere of the Games without

:14:00.:14:02.

pressure. Victoria won the British title in June and was initially told

:14:03.:14:07.

she was too young to compete in the Games but was included in aen an

:14:08.:14:13.

appeal. She did more than hold her own, finishing 8 in the the

:14:14.:14:19.

rankings. One place ahead of Sarah Barrow. The other half of that

:14:20.:14:25.

pairing a fared before. Tonia Couch has to fancy the chance of another

:14:26.:14:32.

medal. What ative from Tonya! Back on dry land the good times keep on

:14:33.:14:39.

rolling for Natalie. She has at least another silver to add to the

:14:40.:14:45.

one she won in the singles. Her fiance is looking to get his hands

:14:46.:14:48.

on one of which his own. Sophie is part of the triples team

:14:49.:15:06.

taking on Australia this evening. We've played a lot of games now. We

:15:07.:15:11.

all play together, are all comfortable as a unit. Whatever

:15:12.:15:17.

happens, she's guaranteed to walk away with at least a silver and

:15:18.:15:19.

maybe a gold. Team England has also excel inside

:15:20.:15:43.

the Commonwealth games pool. Plymouth's John Rudd has played a

:15:44.:15:47.

mainly part in that success as the England swimming coach. He joined us

:15:48.:15:52.

earlier today. John, first of all many congratulations on a fantastic

:15:53.:15:56.

performance by the team. Let's talk a bit about Ben Proud. Certainly

:15:57.:16:01.

living up to his name for this recently. What did you make of his

:16:02.:16:05.

performance? We were thrilled obviously. We knew he was one of the

:16:06.:16:10.

fastest swimmers in the world going into the competition. He swims

:16:11.:16:13.

events where the margins are so small you never know what the

:16:14.:16:18.

outcome is going to be. To come back with two individual gold Ed medals

:16:19.:16:24.

and breaking the individual and Games medals, we were thrilled. Will

:16:25.:16:29.

this success change him, do you think? I doubt it. He is extremely

:16:30.:16:35.

gentle. A very quiet and unassuming young man. I think there was no`one

:16:36.:16:39.

more surprised than him when he managed to win those two events. I

:16:40.:16:43.

don't see him changing at all. It is just the way that he. Is his natural

:16:44.:16:49.

persona is just to be quiet and unassuming. How have you worked to

:16:50.:16:54.

him to get him up to this level? What's the training schedule like?

:16:55.:16:59.

It is pretty brute A even for an event that only lasts 21`22 seconds.

:17:00.:17:04.

He swims nine times a week. He's in the gym a lot. He spends a lot of

:17:05.:17:09.

time with the physiotherapist trying to make him better in terms of his

:17:10.:17:15.

muscular structure. And he has to rest a lot. He has to consume quite

:17:16.:17:22.

a lot of food. But he's also doing a degree at the University of St Mark

:17:23.:17:26.

and St John at the same time, so his life is pretty hectic and he's got a

:17:27.:17:31.

lot to fit in. You work with Ben on a weekly basis, but as coach for

:17:32.:17:36.

team England you've been coaching the whole team. How different sit

:17:37.:17:41.

working for swimmers for a short time as opposed to a weekly basis?

:17:42.:17:47.

It was a challenge. We wanted an identity for England. We said from

:17:48.:17:52.

the outset we thought Scottish people find it quite easy to feel

:17:53.:17:57.

Scottish and Welsh people to feel Welsh, but English people tend to

:17:58.:18:01.

feel British and we wanted to create something that was very much an

:18:02.:18:06.

English identity. We had a seven`day preparation camp at the Aquatics

:18:07.:18:11.

Centre, the Olympic pool. We used that to try and create that identity

:18:12.:18:17.

and to feel part of a team. I conducted one to ones with each of

:18:18.:18:20.

the athletes, which took two`and`a`half days to do. A long

:18:21.:18:23.

process. But by the end of that we had struck a bond, all of us, and

:18:24.:18:28.

had a great group of coaches working with me as well. Tremendous support

:18:29.:18:34.

staff. We used that time wisely I think. By the time we arrived in

:18:35.:18:37.

Glasgow, we knew who we were and what we were about. Part of that

:18:38.:18:42.

team we should mention was Liam Tancock from Exeter. He did

:18:43.:18:46.

remarkably well considering he was coming back from injury. He's a bit

:18:47.:18:51.

of a rough year. I think people had written him off. One of the people

:18:52.:18:54.

who hadn't done that was Liam himself. To win two medals in the

:18:55.:19:02.

individual events. He swam the medley relay heat which meant he got

:19:03.:19:08.

a gold, which means he's a triple gold medallist, three Commonwealth

:19:09.:19:12.

Games in a row, a hell of an achievement for anybody. He is

:19:13.:19:17.

always great value to have on the team, Liam. He's so experienced.

:19:18.:19:22.

He's the old man of the team. He brings all of that pivot with He's

:19:23.:19:28.

so experienced. He's the old man of the team. He brings all of that

:19:29.:19:31.

pivot with him. `` all of that positivity with him. I would love to

:19:32.:19:37.

be part of Rio. My complications are that I don't just coach British

:19:38.:19:45.

athletes. Hopefully I will still be looking after them. I'm charily be

:19:46.:19:51.

involved with Rio in one way or the other, doing the best for all of my

:19:52.:19:56.

athletes. Congratulations on the success of team England at the

:19:57.:19:59.

Commonwealth Games. Thank you for joining us Thank you. A pilot has

:20:00.:20:06.

had a lucky escape today at RNAS Culdrose when his aircraft appeared

:20:07.:20:13.

to lose power and crash`landed. The pilot escaped without injury. The

:20:14.:20:19.

crowds were treated to a spectacular aerial display, including the star

:20:20.:20:23.

of the show, the vulcan bomber. David George has been at Culdrose

:20:24.:20:26.

for us throughout the day. Even before this afternoon's main

:20:27.:20:30.

airshow started, the crowds were treated to this mad display. The

:20:31.:20:43.

aircraft's call sign is golf oak o whisky India Zulu, gee whizz. The

:20:44.:20:52.

star of today's show must be the Avro vulcan bomber. It carried

:20:53.:20:57.

Britain's nuclear deterrent in the 1960s and the pilot today is man who

:20:58.:21:04.

bombed Port Stanley runway in the Falklands war. It's got huge

:21:05.:21:09.

controls, big engines and it is very manoeuvrable. It is a delight to fly

:21:10.:21:17.

in a display. Martin told me before he set off for that flight that most

:21:18.:21:21.

of the noise we are hearing is the air sucked into those four huge

:21:22.:21:24.

engines. It is a very, very inspiring

:21:25.:21:38.

machine. It is huge. It also has this amazing howl. That's what I

:21:39.:21:42.

think people love to hear. The displays are all carefully

:21:43.:21:46.

co`ordinated by the team in the control tower. We have a sequence

:21:47.:21:52.

worked out minute by minute. We were flexible with that. There'll be

:21:53.:21:56.

little slippages left and right but not by much. The important thing is

:21:57.:22:00.

that we keep ill calm. The aim of which the day is to put on a safe

:22:01.:22:04.

and enjoyable display for the public. The familiar search and

:22:05.:22:10.

rescue Sea King of 771 squadron is popular for a look around And in the

:22:11.:22:17.

last 24 hours all of the Sea Kings that have within in Afghanistan are

:22:18.:22:21.

back home, preparing to return to the sea. It won't be nice istan are

:22:22.:22:25.

back home, preparing to return to the sea. It won't be nice and `` it

:22:26.:22:32.

won't be hot and dusty. It it will be good. I'm looking forward to it.

:22:33.:22:39.

Back in the air and the Culdrose weather stayed fair. A Canberra and

:22:40.:22:44.

two Hawker Hunters shining in the afternoon sun. And no airshow is

:22:45.:22:49.

complete without what must be Britain's most famous aircraft of

:22:50.:22:51.

all time. Some wonderful displays. Wasn't that

:22:52.:23:07.

vulcan bomber incredible. The noise on television doesn't do it justice.

:23:08.:23:11.

As David said, some pretty decent weather for air day. But things have

:23:12.:23:16.

about to change? I think so. I think we are turning the corner as we move

:23:17.:23:21.

through this evening and overnight. Much more unsettled weather. The

:23:22.:23:26.

main area of low pressure a feature of the weather for the start of the

:23:27.:23:30.

weekend but it does move out of the way swiftly, so expect an

:23:31.:23:35.

improvement on Sunday. Tomorrow is cloudy. Showers. In fact the showers

:23:36.:23:39.

will link together to give more persistent rain. It will feel cooler

:23:40.:23:44.

too with all the cloud and less sunshine around. The showers have

:23:45.:23:47.

just been to the north of us today. That line of showers I think will

:23:48.:23:52.

continue to move up towards Wales. Overnight I think a fair amount of

:23:53.:23:58.

dry weather. The chance of a shower anywhere tonight. We have a lot of

:23:59.:24:01.

cloud around. Temperatures not as low as last night. A stream of

:24:02.:24:09.

showers to the north Devon coast. 14`15 degrees. But tomorrow will be

:24:10.:24:13.

a different start to the day compared to today. This was earlier

:24:14.:24:20.

today, where we had some sunshine, all be bit briefly. Everything is

:24:21.:24:26.

looking splendid, the flora and fauna appreciating the warm weather

:24:27.:24:30.

and a lock of which the blackberries have ripened. This is cal stock.

:24:31.:24:37.

That cloud gave spits of right rain. Culdrose was lucky to stay bright

:24:38.:24:43.

and dry. Tomorrow these pictures may look different as we see more cloud

:24:44.:24:47.

and outbreaks of rain. Through the day we have one strand

:24:48.:24:53.

of showers that drifts along the Bristol channel coast. From the

:24:54.:24:57.

south`west a line of much more persistent rain. By the end of the

:24:58.:25:01.

day it probably gives us all a bit of wet weather. Little if any rain

:25:02.:25:05.

into parts of Somerset and Dorset. It is in the east that we stay

:25:06.:25:11.

largely dry, but cloudy late in the day and evening. The winds are

:25:12.:25:15.
