Good evening. the news where | :00:00. | :00:16.
A 29`year`old man is critically injured in hospital | :00:17. | :00:18.
after falling around 30 feet from a wall in Jersey. | :00:19. | :00:21.
These mobile phone pictures show the scene, near Commercial | :00:22. | :00:23.
It's thought the man was being chased along Pier | :00:24. | :00:27.
A Jersey mother has described the island's new maternity law | :00:28. | :00:37.
The States recently approved giving new mums 18 weeks of maternity leave | :00:38. | :00:40.
The Minister behind it says there is more to do. | :00:41. | :00:44.
His mum Rachel has an understanding employer. | :00:45. | :00:53.
She was given six months paid maternity. | :00:54. | :00:56.
But she's not impressed with the minimum levels | :00:57. | :00:58.
It is ridiculous. The States of Jersey have a good maternity grant | :00:59. | :01:05.
policy, so thank goodness that is around. Maternity benefit I could | :01:06. | :01:16.
not have got by with a mortgage to pay without it. So thank goodness | :01:17. | :01:20.
that support is in place. But, two weeks is laughable. | :01:21. | :01:23.
But until last month, Jersey companies didn't legally have | :01:24. | :01:27.
Now employers will have to offer 18 weeks with two of those paid. | :01:28. | :01:34.
Jersey's Social Security Minister ` who was behind the vote ` | :01:35. | :01:36.
This is just the beginning of very important rights that are | :01:37. | :01:43.
In particular the rights to request flexible working when you return to | :01:44. | :01:49.
employment after possibly having a baby or needing to care for | :01:50. | :01:53.
somebody. Those are valuable rights, the right to return to the same job | :01:54. | :01:57.
who has taken 18 weeks maternity leave. | :01:58. | :02:01.
Rights the lucky ones like Rachel have already made the most of. | :02:02. | :02:04.
She can't imagine what life is like for some Jersey families. | :02:05. | :02:12.
A friend got three months unpaid, not what she wanted | :02:13. | :02:17.
Her company offered up to three months off, but unpaid. She was in a | :02:18. | :02:23.
much worse situation and it is not what she wanted, as I say. | :02:24. | :02:28.
The new law won't offer new mums much more, but it will be reviewed | :02:29. | :02:31.
A police officer has appeared in Jersey's Magistrates Court | :02:32. | :02:42.
accused of driving without due care and attention. | :02:43. | :02:44.
It's after his patrol car overturned on St Clement's Coast Road in May. | :02:45. | :02:47.
James Andrew Jenkinson, who's 38, asked the Assistant Magistrate, | :02:48. | :02:50.
Peter Harris, for time to get further legal advice. | :02:51. | :02:52.
His case was adjourned for three weeks. | :02:53. | :02:59.
Questions are being raised over whether there's a cheaper way | :03:00. | :03:01.
of providing medical evacuation flights in Guernsey. | :03:02. | :03:03.
The health authorities currently use a company in the UK for medivacs. | :03:04. | :03:06.
Last year more than 250 flights were needed costing more than ?1million. | :03:07. | :03:09.
More than half were for cardiology patients. | :03:10. | :03:18.
Disabled athletes in the Channel Islands are calling | :03:19. | :03:20.
for Island Games organisers to include disabled sports. | :03:21. | :03:22.
It follows the recent success of the para`events at | :03:23. | :03:25.
In this race at the Commonwealth Games a 13`year`old | :03:26. | :03:31.
from the Shetland Islands becomes the youngest Scottish athlete to win | :03:32. | :03:34.
You can see how much it means to her. | :03:35. | :03:39.
But although she can compete in the games at Glasgow she can't | :03:40. | :03:42.
compete in a disabled event at the Island Games due to be held | :03:43. | :03:45.
And someone else who would love to have the chance to compete | :03:46. | :04:00.
in the Island Games is Guernsey swimmer Elizabeth Northrop. | :04:01. | :04:02.
She's has won national medals at competitions in England. | :04:03. | :04:05.
She has a learning disability so her mother Jane speaks on her behalf. | :04:06. | :04:08.
It is a shame we can't have anyone at the games in Jersey. The games | :04:09. | :04:20.
are not for disabled athletes and that is a shame. They had an | :04:21. | :04:26.
opportunity. It is not being taken up. | :04:27. | :04:32.
But the Association that runs the Island Games says there have been | :04:33. | :04:35.
In a statement the Association's General Secretary | :04:36. | :04:39.
says, "Although there are currently no specific events included | :04:40. | :04:42.
in the Island Games for people with disabilities, athletes with | :04:43. | :04:44.
a disability have been competing in our Games for many years e.g. | :04:45. | :04:47.
wheelchair archers and visually impaired swimmers | :04:48. | :04:48.
But will disabled athletes be treated equally | :04:49. | :04:51.
and have the opportunity to compete at next summer's games in Jersey? | :04:52. | :04:57.
When you talk about events like the Commonwealth Games, they are global. | :04:58. | :05:01.
They have the time to fit those sent. The Olympics has a separate | :05:02. | :05:11.
event for disabled athletes. I do not think the Island games | :05:12. | :05:13.
Association could actually consider anything at the moment. | :05:14. | :05:17.
For disability campaigners, news that Jersey won't be including | :05:18. | :05:19.
Over the last 25 years we have been running our own events and we know | :05:20. | :05:29.
how much goes into that. With able`bodied athletics going on at | :05:30. | :05:32.
the same time the drill would not cope. | :05:33. | :05:36.
Some disabled athletes say being allowed to compete at big events is | :05:37. | :05:39.
But many things will have to change before the Island Games Association | :05:40. | :05:43.
commits to providing that opportunity. | :05:44. | :05:46.
Finally, a quick look ahead to tomorrow's programme. | :05:47. | :05:48.
Find out why Jersey`born actor, Henry Cavill, is home | :05:49. | :05:52.
We shall tell you all tomorrow night at 6:30pm | :05:53. | :05:56.
And if you can't wait, tune in to BBC Radio Jersey tomorrow | :05:57. | :06:00.
Good evening. There will be a change in our weather into Saturday and | :06:01. | :06:22.
Sunday. It will be windy and wet. Tomorrow will be the last decent | :06:23. | :06:29.
day. It will be cloudy with showers but brighter in the afternoon. Here | :06:30. | :06:34.
in the Mediterranean you can see an area of low pressure and that will | :06:35. | :06:40.
develop and move towards us. You will see the remains of a tropical. | :06:41. | :06:46.
That will bring heavy rain. Overnight tonight it will be largely | :06:47. | :06:50.
dry and it will be increasingly cloudy by tomorrow morning. | :06:51. | :06:54.
Overnight temperatures around 15 degrees. The risk of a shower | :06:55. | :07:02.
tomorrow morning. Some bright skies developing and sunny skies in the | :07:03. | :07:06.
afternoon. Not quite as warm as it has been. The winds are coming from | :07:07. | :07:10.
the North West and they will increase. On Saturday, there will be | :07:11. | :07:18.
a mixture of sunny spells and showers and it will become | :07:19. | :07:20.
increasingly cloudy. On Sunday it will be wet and windy. From me, it's | :07:21. | :07:31.
good night. I will leave you with a summary. | :07:32. | :07:33.
fellow, I'm sure you have heard about it, the remnants of | :07:34. | :07:36.
ex-hurricane Bertha which will bring the potential for intense rain. More | :07:37. | :07:41.
details on that with the national forecast with Jay. | :07:42. | :07:44.
It is quiet overnight. The script is changed tomorrow. Rain in the | :07:45. | :07:50.
forecast which could turn out to be heavy. Warnings have been issued A | :07:51. | :07:54.
wet start today in the extreme south-east. It moves further inland. | :07:55. | :07:58.
A wet start in Northern Ireland as well. The central swathe may well | :07:59. | :08:01.
start on a dry note but it won't take long for heavy showers it get | :08:02. | :08:05.
going into the afternoon. Not all doom and gloom. I suspect the north | :08:06. | :08:09.
and east of Scotland doing well, in temples largely dry kvenlts western | :08:10. | :08:13.
Scotland will see wetter weather. The rain pushes through Northern | :08:14. | :08:16.
Ireland. Brightening up in the afternoon. Northern England down | :08:17. | :08:20.
through the Midlands towards East Anglia, some showers will be heavy, | :08:21. | :08:22.
thundery | :08:23. | :08:23. |
