very much. That's all from the BBC News at Six. Goodbye from me.

:00:00.:00:09.

Guernsey's government draws up a short list

:00:10.:00:24.

of companies that could take over and run the island's bus service.

:00:25.:00:27.

And ripped from the wall ` a plaque put up to commemorate 70 years

:00:28.:00:30.

It makes me feel very sad and angry that this has happened.

:00:31.:00:48.

A 79`year`old Jersey man has told how he was given electric shocks

:00:49.:00:52.

and had darts thrown at him when in a children's home in the 1940s.

:00:53.:00:57.

Gifford Aubin was giving evidence at the Jersey Care Inquiry today.

:00:58.:01:00.

He said the Jersey Home for Boys, which is now known as Haut de la

:01:01.:01:04.

Well, six years ago, when the scale of abuse

:01:05.:01:10.

in the care system first emerged, Mr Gifford spoke to the BBC.

:01:11.:01:14.

Christina Ghidoni takes up his story.

:01:15.:01:24.

That is me there and that is my brother.

:01:25.:01:28.

As allegations of abuse at Haut de la Garenne hit the

:01:29.:01:31.

headlines, former resident Gifford Aubin told a BBC reporter about the

:01:32.:01:34.

abuse he had suffered there, usually at the hands of the older boys.

:01:35.:01:40.

They did all sorts of things like putting wires on your legs, and they

:01:41.:01:50.

had a generator which they turn very handle to pass electricity to you.

:01:51.:01:58.

They threw darts at you, real darts. Today, Gifford took to

:01:59.:02:02.

the witness stand at the Jersey Care Mr Aubin was giving evidence

:02:03.:02:05.

at the independent inquiry here He started

:02:06.:02:09.

by telling how he was taken away in a car when he was about six with

:02:10.:02:11.

his brother and sister, and taken to He said he didn't know why he was

:02:12.:02:15.

being taken away from his family. He spent ten years at the children's

:02:16.:02:21.

home and described it like a prison. Mr Aubin told the inquiry today

:02:22.:02:25.

that he was caned by staff for He said there were about 150 boys

:02:26.:02:28.

at the home and only three staff members, and life was hell there,

:02:29.:02:34.

but he couldn't complain through When asked what he wanted out

:02:35.:02:37.

of the Inquiry, he said to make sure that nothing

:02:38.:02:42.

like that would happen again. Six years ago he told the BBC

:02:43.:02:45.

the same thing. This time he's hoping

:02:46.:02:47.

authorities listen. It is something which should never

:02:48.:03:02.

have happened. Sometimes you feel that you have been put there, and

:03:03.:03:09.

you feel responsible. You probably shouldn't feel like that.

:03:10.:03:14.

Well, after Mr Giffard's evidence, a woman who spent time in the

:03:15.:03:17.

Jersey Home for Girls ` also in the 1940s ` told the panel her story.

:03:18.:03:21.

Christina joined me a moment ago to explain.

:03:22.:03:23.

78`year`old Violet Renouf spoke to the inquiry this afternoon.

:03:24.:03:28.

She'd never spoken publicly about her experiences there before.

:03:29.:03:31.

She went to the Jersey Home for Girls when she was six`years`old.

:03:32.:03:33.

She described being locked in isolation

:03:34.:03:35.

for three weeks there after her ration book went missing and how she

:03:36.:03:38.

She had to parade around the dining room after wetting her bed with

:03:39.:03:43.

Mrs Renouf said life was very, very hard there

:03:44.:03:53.

Another abuse victim is due to give evidence to the inquiry this week,

:03:54.:04:00.

via video link from Wales on Thursday.

:04:01.:04:03.

Guernsey Police has released an image of a man captured on CCTV

:04:04.:04:06.

in the High Street in the early hours of Monday.

:04:07.:04:08.

Martin Martin jewellers was burgled at about 4.50am,

:04:09.:04:11.

and police are appealing for anyone who saw this man to come forward.

:04:12.:04:14.

A 22`year`old man from England has been arrested

:04:15.:04:16.

on suspicion of burglary and remains in police custody for questioning.

:04:17.:04:21.

Jersey's unemployment is at its lowest level

:04:22.:04:23.

The number of people registered looking for

:04:24.:04:25.

work last month was 1,570, according to figures from the States.

:04:26.:04:28.

The last time it was this low was in December 2011.

:04:29.:04:35.

All Channel Island customers texting UK mobile phones on the 02 network

:04:36.:04:38.

Currently messages are being sent multiple times `

:04:39.:04:42.

with one man in the UK getting the same text from Jersey 60 times.

:04:43.:04:46.

The fault is in the UK, with a company called Telefonica,

:04:47.:04:49.

through which Channel Island texts are routed.

:04:50.:04:51.

People will not be charged for the extra messages.

:04:52.:04:58.

A short list of companies who could potentially

:04:59.:05:00.

run Guernsey's bus service in future has now been drawn up.

:05:01.:05:02.

More than ten operators expressed an interest in taking on the

:05:03.:05:05.

And having assessed those initial bids, the Environment Department's

:05:06.:05:08.

now moved onto the next stage of picking who gets the job.

:05:09.:05:11.

But over the years Guernsey's buses have changed a lot.

:05:12.:05:18.

The current bus contract's expiring next year `

:05:19.:05:24.

But what we now know is that more than ten companies have expressed an

:05:25.:05:30.

And having looked at those initial bids ? the Environment Department

:05:31.:05:37.

has now decided which of those companies can officially tender.

:05:38.:05:41.

Each will make a case for what they can offer,

:05:42.:05:43.

including looking at the size and type of buses they'd use in future,

:05:44.:05:47.

The States will decide who gets the job, but the local bus user's

:05:48.:05:53.

The experience we had a previous consultations is that our advice was

:05:54.:06:08.

taken six months later. The new environment board is more consuls

:06:09.:06:14.

and more interested in getting it right first time, rather than having

:06:15.:06:20.

to patch things up. I would say we are interested in being consulted

:06:21.:06:21.

and listened to. The earliest the new service

:06:22.:06:24.

will start is next April. And with the States still hoping to

:06:25.:06:27.

make the buses free, it really will signal another big change

:06:28.:06:30.

in the history of the Guernsey bus The Chinese ambassador to the UK

:06:31.:06:34.

says there's lots of opportunities for Jersey to work

:06:35.:06:40.

more closely with his country. His Excellency Liu Xiaoming is in

:06:41.:06:42.

the island this week, meeting with States members and representatives

:06:43.:06:45.

from the finance industry. Today he was given a tour of

:06:46.:06:47.

Jersey Dairy, where he proposes a round table discussion to improve

:06:48.:06:50.

Jersey`Chinese relations. Jay it can offer a lot, so I'm

:06:51.:07:04.

offering this round table event. It can be hosted by a Chief Minister.

:07:05.:07:13.

It will introduce the opportunities that we can offer to Chinese

:07:14.:07:16.

businesses. Guernsey Police is investigating

:07:17.:07:24.

an act of vandalism that has A plaque put up to commemorate

:07:25.:07:26.

the 70th anniversary of the D`day landings has been ripped

:07:27.:07:30.

from the wall. It was to mark the sacrifice of

:07:31.:07:32.

a Canadian pilot who died when his plane was shot down over St Peter

:07:33.:07:35.

Port while destroying German radar. Just over two months ago,

:07:36.:07:38.

the Queen's representative, the Lieutenant Governor,

:07:39.:07:41.

unveiled this plaque to honour a Canadian pilot who died whilst

:07:42.:07:43.

trying to knock out a German radar The Freya radar station at

:07:44.:07:46.

Fort George was of significant importance, covering

:07:47.:07:49.

west of the Normandy beaches. At half past eight in the morning,

:07:50.:07:51.

Flight Lieutenant John Saville led his flight of Typhoons

:07:52.:07:54.

on a successful attack on this installation, but the 34`year`old

:07:55.:07:56.

was hit by German anti`aircraft fire making a second run at the target,

:07:57.:07:59.

and he died when his aircraft And today a fallen memorial

for a fallen hero. His plaque has gone,

:08:03.:08:09.

allegedly ripped off the wall by a group of people who had been seen

:08:10.:08:11.

jumping off the wall into the sea. This man died the same way thousands

:08:12.:08:27.

did to give us what we have, the freedom to jump off this wall as the

:08:28.:08:38.

youngsters were doing into the sea. To have been examples of vandalism

:08:39.:08:45.

here. This has been damaged and it needs to be replaced. Why do such a

:08:46.:08:55.

man this bit of vandalism? `` mindless. This man died doing good

:08:56.:09:00.

for the island and for Britain. It is very sad, it makes me feel very

:09:01.:09:04.

sad and very angry that this has happened.

:09:05.:09:07.

There's talk of installing CCTV to prevent future incidents.

:09:08.:09:09.

But for now the authorities are appealing for anyone with

:09:10.:09:12.

It's unclear when the new plaque will be installed to once again mark

:09:13.:09:16.

the ultimate sacrifice made by one man for Guernsey's freedom.

:09:17.:09:18.

Tomorrow sees the start of Guernsey's West Show `

:09:19.:09:20.

but for the first time in 30years, there'll be no Grand Pageant.

:09:21.:09:23.

The Pageant has islanders parading in traditional Guernsey dress `

:09:24.:09:26.

and has long been considered the centrepiece

:09:27.:09:27.

Organisers say they just didn't have the resources this time `

:09:28.:09:31.

What will the weather be like? It was tipping down outside before I

:09:32.:09:46.

came into the studio. What has happened to our summer? We will get

:09:47.:09:54.

a bit of respite tomorrow. Perhaps the showers are more isolated but we

:09:55.:09:58.

still have that wind. It has knocked the temperatures down. It is a brisk

:09:59.:10:03.

westerly wind tomorrow, so it's like a change in direction. Some sunshine

:10:04.:10:08.

but a scattering of showers. The culprit for all of this unsettled

:10:09.:10:11.

weather seems like it is miles away from us, but it is dominating the

:10:12.:10:17.

weather, not just words but as far south as Spain and Portugal. It is

:10:18.:10:23.

that of wind there. It stretches all the way down past us, even as far as

:10:24.:10:29.

the North African coast. These winds of cold winds, bringing in the risk

:10:30.:10:34.

of showers bow tonight and tomorrow. This is the middle of the day

:10:35.:10:39.

tomorrow. A great rush of showers turning up on part of the channel.

:10:40.:10:43.

Those showers will be frequent again, but they'll be isolated

:10:44.:10:48.

overnight tonight. For most of us it is largely dry. There is a risk of a

:10:49.:10:52.

shower in the small hours of the morning. Temperatures down to 14

:10:53.:10:58.

Celsius. Tomorrow, expect to see the showers in the morning but it will

:10:59.:11:02.

be dry later on. We can't rule out the possibility of an afternoon

:11:03.:11:06.

shower spoiling the day, maybe just one or two of them. 18 Celsius is

:11:07.:11:10.

the best we can do with the temperatures. We have a

:11:11.:11:17.

north`westerly breeze coming in. Showers and generally good

:11:18.:11:21.

visibility. Here are the times of high water.

:11:22.:11:34.

A somewhat dry day on Friday, and certainly drier on the weekend. We

:11:35.:11:42.

lose the strength of that wind, so feeling warmer as we nudge toward

:11:43.:11:47.

Saturday and Sunday. Back to you. I want to get on the beach now. We

:11:48.:11:56.

will have more later. That is it for now.

:11:57.:12:14.

And fancy that ` the woman taking dressing up to a whole new level.

:12:15.:12:23.

There are fears that one of Britain's rarest creatures could

:12:24.:12:26.

Until now, the River Allen in Dorset has provided a secure habitat for

:12:27.:12:31.

But now it's become victim to a type of plague,

:12:32.:12:36.

and the Environment Agency wants anglers to help save it.

:12:37.:12:39.

No stone left unturned, as the Environment Agency

:12:40.:12:51.

and Dorset Wildlife Trust scour the River Allen for

:12:52.:12:53.

The species is under threat in part of the river near Wimborne,

:12:54.:12:57.

after the crayfish plague was discovered here.

:12:58.:12:59.

This morning's search revealed two dead crayfish.

:13:00.:13:02.

The fact that we have the plague here is a real blow.

:13:03.:13:12.

It is such a precious little river, full of fantastic wildlife.

:13:13.:13:14.

To have the native crayfish here was the icing on the cake,

:13:15.:13:17.

It is not known how the disease came to be in the River Allen.

:13:18.:13:27.

It could have come across on a non`native species of crayfish,

:13:28.:13:30.

Or it may have come across on a piece

:13:31.:13:33.

What we need to do is try to ensure we are not spreading it

:13:34.:13:38.

So we need to follow the Check Clean Dry Normal code, ensuring that any

:13:39.:13:53.

wellies or equipment taken to the river are clean, so free of plant

:13:54.:13:57.

For river users, it is a reminder of the And Liz' Code. You have to hand

:13:58.:14:10.

your equipment up after use and allow it to the bone dry before you

:14:11.:14:16.

use it again. That their future on this stretch of the river does not

:14:17.:14:21.

look promising, the project aims to preserve the endangered species.

:14:22.:14:31.

The South West's three Football League teams all target a place in

:14:32.:14:34.

Yeovil Town have to recover from their opening`day defeat as they

:14:35.:14:38.

Exeter City aim for an upset at St James' Park against Championship

:14:39.:14:44.

side Bournemouth, with Plymouth Argyle aiming to do

:14:45.:14:46.

the same at Home Park against Leyton Orient from League One.

:14:47.:14:49.

There's full coverage on BBC Radio Devon and BBC Somerset.

:14:50.:14:53.

In the Conference, Torquay United attempt to get off the mark by

:14:54.:14:57.

Every year on Spotlight in the run up to Christmas, we feature

:14:58.:15:06.

the famous garland created to decorate the great hall at Cotehele

:15:07.:15:09.

The seasonal garland is created by volunteers and made up of flowers

:15:10.:15:14.

The colour and variety of blooms vary each year according

:15:15.:15:20.

Gardeners and volunteers are already hard at work at the gardens in

:15:21.:15:26.

South East Cornwall collecting this year's flowers.

:15:27.:15:28.

Tiffany Truscott has been to find out more.

:15:29.:15:38.

Volunteers have been picking and bunching them since May.

:15:39.:15:49.

There are these finny pieces of greenery down the stem

:15:50.:15:51.

and we have to take them off because they could not if we left them on.

:15:52.:15:56.

The garland will be over 60 feet long when it is created

:15:57.:16:08.

in the great hall in November, and last year 42,000 flowers were used.

:16:09.:16:11.

It was a fantastic year of growing last year.

:16:12.:16:13.

At this stage, we are about 16,000, so we have a good amount

:16:14.:16:30.

so I'm confident we will have a good display.

:16:31.:16:32.

Whether we want 42,000 or not I do not know.

:16:33.:16:35.

Volunteers and staff will continue to pick the flowers every day

:16:36.:16:40.

for the next couple of months to make sure they have

:16:41.:16:43.

Today we have brought some of the bunched flowers up here.

:16:44.:16:52.

They are in bunches of 20 so that is how we know that we have

:16:53.:16:56.

They are drying and take six weeks to dry.

:16:57.:16:59.

So we can just find a space to hang them up.

:17:00.:17:01.

Having seen the cutting, bunching and drying process of all

:17:02.:17:04.

the flowers, you will be able to see the great hall here transformed

:17:05.:17:07.

into a glorious, colourful display at the end of the year, similar to

:17:08.:17:10.

It is just around the corner! No, it isn't! Christmas is a long

:17:11.:17:29.

time away! A syndicate of 25 work colleagues

:17:30.:17:31.

from Bodmin are sharing a Lotto jackpot of nearly

:17:32.:17:34.

?1.5 million. The winners work at the

:17:35.:17:35.

council`run They each get a share

:17:36.:17:36.

:17:37.:17:46.

A wedding, a new roof, a holiday are just a few things the members of

:17:47.:17:50.

this syndicate are planning with their winnings, but many of them did

:17:51.:17:54.

not quite believed they had won the jackpot.

:17:55.:17:59.

Disbelief, really. It took a while to sink in, because Rena Barnes is a

:18:00.:18:04.

bit of a joke. So most of the calls on Saturday night were about whether

:18:05.:18:08.

she was actually winding us up or not. I was on my phone and my phone

:18:09.:18:12.

was shaking and I just could not check so I was feeling quite sick

:18:13.:18:18.

until I actually got it confirmed. The 25 people who shared almost ?1.5

:18:19.:18:22.

million or work at the Cornwall Equipment Loan Store store, to

:18:23.:18:30.

labelling `` delivering specialist equipment for patients who have been

:18:31.:18:33.

discharged from hospital. They have been playing the syndicate for five

:18:34.:18:37.

years. You going to give up work now? Not quite! We have been telling

:18:38.:18:48.

everyone. Lots of people are talking about buying new cars. I'm just

:18:49.:18:53.

paying off lots of debt and helping family out. Other people are helping

:18:54.:18:58.

family and going on holidays. I need a new roof for a barn conversion we

:18:59.:19:02.

are doing, so I might stretch to that. With just shy of ?60,000 each,

:19:03.:19:07.

the jackpot will buy them considerably more than their last

what she was wearing today. You would expect birds at the

:19:33.:19:48.

seafront. Seagulls, naturally, not necessarily a parrot. But that is

:19:49.:19:53.

today's chosen outfit for even Hazelton. Every day for 12 months,

:19:54.:19:58.

she will be taking a walk on the wild side. Some of the outfits make

:19:59.:20:03.

it harder than others. This one is quite eye`catching, so it does make

me feel quite self`conscious. I'm not going to lie, it's quite

schoolgirl the other day when I did my grocery shopping. What sort of a

:20:40.:20:45.

reaction have you had? Initially people are confused, think I am a

:20:46.:20:48.

bit crazy, and then some people pluck up the courage to ask what I'm

:20:49.:20:53.

doing. When I tell them they are really supportive. Now I am a

crocodile. I bought this outfit on Dartmoor the other day. The film

:21:14.:21:18.

wonder woman. I was really worried about going through customs but they

:21:19.:21:22.

were fine and they were jolly about it. Only another 322 days to go in

:21:23.:21:31.

fancy dress. Looking good. I have got some money!

:21:32.:21:42.

A fabulous idea. What was John, a shark? I think so.

:21:43.:21:48.

He's always dressing like that! It is nowhere near November the 5th

:21:49.:21:51.

but it is fireworks night in Plymouth for thousands of people.

:21:52.:21:58.

They will watch the sky light up as three teams tried to prove they have

:21:59.:22:01.

the best display. Another three teams then compete tomorrow but

:22:02.:22:05.

before it all goes up in smoke our reporter is amongst the explosives

:22:06.:22:08.

tonight. Good evening. Yes, worrying, isn't

:22:09.:22:18.

it? 1500 kilos of explosives. But look, two hold fire extinguishers

:22:19.:22:22.

appear so we are perfectly safe commission will of course there are

:22:23.:22:25.

more safety precautions. Andy is here. It is very technological now,

:22:26.:22:33.

isn't it? It is perfectly safe. We have been plugging in all these

:22:34.:22:38.

fireworks since 7am. All of these wires are connected to a firework

:22:39.:22:43.

that go into a computer. It is not connected, but you can turn on the

:22:44.:22:49.

fire... Me? Yes. Whatever happens now is out of my control. The fire

:22:50.:22:55.

button is eliminated and that is what we will press tonight. Listen,

:22:56.:23:01.

how do you practice? That is what I have always wondered. There is no

:23:02.:23:05.

practising. There is an awful lot of work back in the studios and the

:23:06.:23:08.

offices of these companies who tell the computer when they want to see

:23:09.:23:12.

the fireworks. The computer calculates the time it needs to

:23:13.:23:16.

launch at firework beforehand so some of the area once need launching

:23:17.:23:21.

three or four seconds before so that everything is synchronised. A quick

:23:22.:23:24.

word with Kevin, one of the organisers. We will seize on 3D

:23:25.:23:30.

fireworks tonight? Yes, in the first show tonight you will see that. Does

:23:31.:23:37.

that mean coming across as well? Know, everybody is perfidy safe. Is

:23:38.:23:43.

this what towns on the coast have to do now to bring in visitors, these

:23:44.:23:48.

big scale events? Yes, it is entertainment and it is a perfect

:23:49.:23:52.

venue. It brings revenue to the city. Good luck. We have been

:23:53.:23:57.

absolutely drenched in rain. That is why we have the plastic and the foil

:23:58.:24:02.

on top of the fireworks, but it will not affect the display. It might

:24:03.:24:04.

affect the visitors, gathering over there. They are huddling under the

:24:05.:24:11.

citadel. Don't touch that button! You had me

:24:12.:24:18.

worried! Still a few hours to go. They have had some rain there this

:24:19.:24:21.

evening. Hopefully that would spoil things too much.

:24:22.:24:25.

We have had some showers in Plymouth today but I think tonight for the

:24:26.:24:34.

fireworks apart from blustery wind it is a largely dry evening. The

:24:35.:24:37.

wind is a real challenge for those organisers and for the displays.

:24:38.:24:45.

Tomorrow it is slightly less windy but the wind will not be liked by

:24:46.:24:47.

any stretch of the imagination. area giving us a cooler feel this

:24:48.:25:03.

week is away on the coast of Scotland but it is giving its

:25:04.:25:06.

influence right across Britain and we have a keen westerly wind tonight

:25:07.:25:11.

coinciding with some pretty high spring tides. Some of the highest

:25:12.:25:17.

this evening. So we have warnings from the Environment Agency of the

:25:18.:25:22.

risk of coastal flooding. For North Devon, North Somerset coasts and the

:25:23.:25:29.

North Cornwall coast overnight and also at Thirsk tomorrow morning. The

:25:30.:25:34.

rain bands swirling around Scotland are still giving some heavy bands of

:25:35.:25:38.

rain. For as they will become more isolated. It will become mainly dry.

:25:39.:25:43.

The showers are tending to fade away. Temperatures will probably be

:25:44.:25:47.

as low as single figures in a few places. For tomorrow, a much better

:25:48.:25:55.

start to the day. The exception to that will be the more western parts

:25:56.:25:58.

of Cornwall, where perhaps first thing in the morning we will see a

:25:59.:26:02.

scattering of showers but by the afternoon, some sunshine. So can

:26:03.:26:07.

head to what we saw today, where here we had a fairly cloudy sky, it

:26:08.:26:13.

is a much better day all in all. It did not stop this ferry from running

:26:14.:26:17.

and the showers came and went swiftly because the wind has been

:26:18.:26:21.

strong today. But sheltered parts of the eastern side of Devon and the

:26:22.:26:25.

southeastern coast of Cornwall will probably get the best of the weather

:26:26.:26:28.

tomorrow because here we have some shelter from the strength of wind.

:26:29.:26:32.

The wind changes direction tomorrow. It becomes a bit more of a westerly.

:26:33.:26:40.

For the Isles of Scilly, a few showers in the morning and then

:26:41.:26:44.

becoming mainly dry. The showers clearing out of the way. Some

:26:45.:26:47.

sunshine in the afternoon. Times of high water.

:26:48.:26:55.

A pretty high tide again tomorrow. The surf has been pretty lively on

:26:56.:27:03.

the North coast today and it will probably be the same tomorrow.

:27:04.:27:07.

Gradually easing as we get towards the weekend.

:27:08.:27:17.

The wind uses a bit in the afternoon. As we head towards the

:27:18.:27:25.

weekend, more showers arriving on Thursday and then briefly a breach

:27:26.:27:28.

of high pressure heading our way as we move towards the weekend. So it

:27:29.:27:31.

does get drier. Good luck if you are a pet owner in

:27:32.:27:42.

the Plymouth area tonight. But if you are off to the fireworks, have a

:27:43.:27:46.

lovely time and may the MUSIC: "It Don't Mean A Thing"

:27:58.:28:15.

apprentices and office clerks Don't stop moving!
