Good evening and welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up:

:00:13.:00:14.

Condor takes its new boat to Poole, ending 80 years of Channel Hslands

:00:15.:00:18.

We all hope to bring more pdople to the island, trying to get pdople to

:00:19.:00:29.

come over through marketing. Plus we speak to

:00:30.:00:32.

a Guernsey teenager who won gold enjoying it.

:00:33.:00:46.

And another bright day on the way tomorrow. Just a couple of

:00:47.:00:49.

showers, but a good chance of staying dry.

:00:50.:00:59.

Condor Ferries has bought a new ?50 million,

:01:00.:01:02.

high`speed ferry to sail between the Channel Islands and the UK.

:01:03.:01:04.

The new vessel will replace two boats currently serving the routes.

:01:05.:01:07.

But the Austal 102 will onlx sail to Poole after Weymouth

:01:08.:01:09.

Condor says the new boat will be bigger, more reliable and whll be

:01:10.:01:14.

That's how Condor's describhng its new ferry.

:01:15.:01:29.

It'll sail in poorer weather and we are told will offer a smoother ride.

:01:30.:01:36.

A real wow factor for the island, great news for inbound tourhsts and

:01:37.:01:47.

islanders getting off the islands. It will be a new state`of`the`art

:01:48.:01:55.

ferry and an important time for us and the future of ferry travel for

:01:56.:01:57.

the islands. That's a big investment,

:01:58.:01:58.

and only went ahead after both Jersey and Guernsey's

:01:59.:02:00.

governments agreed to give But are passengers happy with

:02:01.:02:02.

the arrangement? Beatle fair play to them investing

:02:03.:02:21.

with new modern technology. We need some more competition.

:02:22.:02:23.

We spend ?1 million EA in the UK to get

:02:24.:02:34.

and we want more people to come and islanders travelling to use the

:02:35.:02:43.

ferry. That is where we are going to regroup the investment. So

:02:44.:02:48.

rule out a price change? Prhces are closely monitored by the St`tes and

:02:49.:02:52.

they will continue to be so. So fares will be monitored,

:02:53.:02:53.

but Condor isn't ruling out a rise. The only thing that's certahn is

:02:54.:02:54.

that the boat arriving here from the UK will look very different

:02:55.:02:55.

next year. Well, businesses in Weymouth have

:03:20.:03:23.

the Channel Islands and the UK. In the mid 19th century a r`ilway

:03:24.:03:26.

was laid to connect the trahn to the ferries, allowing Jersex Royal

:03:27.:03:30.

potatoes and tomatoes to be exported to the UK and tourists to vhsit

the Channel Islands with ease. It's seen plenty of new ferries

:03:35.:03:39.

too, but it won't be welcomhng Big it plays an important role in

:03:40.:04:16.

our local economy, but equally, we have is a council bin mindftl of

:04:17.:04:21.

seeing these things within our strategic agenda going forw`rd.

:04:22.:04:22.

And tourism bosses in the islands are worried that the change

:04:23.:04:23.

Weymouth has been a main pohnt of departure for Jersey for many years,

:04:24.:04:38.

and when we didn't have a Wdymouth service due to the problems of last

:04:39.:04:42.

year, we did lose some result, so we will have to work hard

:04:43.:04:47.

to make sure repairing its harbour in thd past

:04:48.:04:50.

few years, its days as a gateway between our isles and the m`inland

:04:51.:04:52.

will end in spring next year. Wages increased more quicklx than

salaries increased by 2.6%, with Prices are rising more slowly,

in the Channel Islands. Still ahead, Holly will havd the

weather. Later in Spotlight with Justin

its final auction. A Guernsey teenager is

the first Channel Islander dver to 18`year`old swimmer Miles Mtnro was

:06:07.:06:11.

part of the team that took gold But there was no time to bask in his

:06:12.:06:16.

glory, as Miles was also in action The young Guernseyman Miles Munro

:06:17.:06:21.

about to compete in the 50m freestyle final

:06:22.:06:32.

at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing. He wasn't far off the pace,

:06:33.:06:42.

but not quite enough But yesterday he,

:06:43.:06:44.

along with his Team GB teamlates, stunned the swimming world when

:06:45.:06:51.

they won gold in the 4x100m relay. That was amazing. Winning gold was a

:06:52.:07:09.

really good end to the season. I'm really enjoying it.

:07:10.:07:12.

Every champion has to start somewhere, and for miles, it was

:07:13.:07:22.

here in the small pool, where he won his first medal. He got his duckling

:07:23.:07:28.

badge and his puffin badges. first medal was when he was five

:07:29.:07:37.

years old, he came second swimming ten metres with a float. He had

:07:38.:07:43.

good kick, so that proved that point, and the next year he won

:07:44.:07:45.

Well, Miles has obviously come a very long way since then,

:07:46.:07:46.

He reached the semifinals in two events at last month's Commonwealth

:07:47.:07:49.

Games and now can add a Youth Olympic gold to his collecthon.

:07:50.:07:54.

It has been a very long season. European Juniors before thel as

:07:55.:08:02.

well. So I am starting to gdt a bit tired now.

:08:03.:08:04.

So, while Miles enjoys a well deserved rest, many hn the

:08:05.:08:06.

swimming world are now wonddring how far he can go, especially whth the

:08:07.:08:09.

Mike Wilkins, BBC Channel Islands News, Gternsey.

:08:10.:08:16.

A 70`year`old Australian man has beaten Guernsey man Roger Allsop's

:08:17.:08:22.

record to become the oldest man to swim the English Channel.

:08:23.:08:25.

Cyril Baldock from Bondi Be`ch in Sydney completed

:08:26.:08:27.

He's three months older than Roger was when he completed the swim

:08:28.:08:30.

Still an impressive feat at any age and any time of year, but the sea is

:08:31.:08:47.

fairly warm at the moment. What is the weather looking like?

:08:48.:08:51.

It might be warm in the sea, but I don't think

:08:52.:08:55.

For our surfers, the waves `re a little disappointing. Perhaps one or

:08:56.:10:35.

two showers on Saturday, and then Sunday starts drive the trahn moves

:10:36.:10:40.

in overnight leading to a Come rain or shine, we will have

highlights of the Battle of the flowers at the North Show tomorrow

evening. Stay with the BBC now for the rest of spotlight.

after a steel structure collapsed at Falmouth Docks in Cornwall.

:11:03.:11:05.

Emergency services were called to the scene just

:11:06.:11:07.

A Falmouth said the men suffered "serious injuries"

:11:08.:11:13.

and the thoughts of everyond at the company were with thdm.

:11:14.:11:16.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

:11:17.:11:25.

An review into mental health services for young people in England

:11:26.:11:28.

has been welcomed by a family from Cornwall whose son died

:11:29.:11:30.

The Health mMinister Norman Lamb has described services as

:11:31.:11:33.

He's set up a "task force" to find out how they can be improved.

:11:34.:11:39.

In a moment, we'll be hearing from a member of that task force, but first

:11:40.:11:42.

18`year`old Ben Cowburn frol Truro took his own life at the

:11:43.:11:46.

Longreach House Adult Mental Health Unit in Cornwall in 2010.

:11:47.:11:51.

His parents set up the Invictus Trust to campaign for

:11:52.:11:55.

a specialist unit for young people with acute mental health issues

:11:56.:12:01.

Plans for the unit are advanced but are waiting on NHS fundhng

:12:02.:12:05.

The family welcome the ministerial interest.

:12:06.:12:10.

Norman Lamb outlines a numbdr of points that we have discovered

:12:11.:12:13.

through talking to young people and their families.

:12:14.:12:17.

Priorities that we see as rdally, really important,

:12:18.:12:20.

so it is completely in line with the Invictus C`mpaign.

:12:21.:12:24.

I am slightly concerned that a task force means a strategy, Is

:12:25.:12:27.

this is aims, objective, etc, so th`t all

:12:28.:12:28.

adds delay to a process and I am concerned that there may be some

:12:29.:12:33.

delays in things happening, but we are very pleased that mental health

:12:34.:12:37.

is being raised up to a more appropriate level

:12:38.:12:39.

of consciousness, really. The Health Minister says thd

:12:40.:12:43.

initiative has been influenced by meeting the families of young people

:12:44.:12:47.

including Steve and Sharon Cowburn. Here he's visiting a young persons

:12:48.:12:51.

mental health unit in Essex. I want to crucially involve young

:12:52.:12:55.

people in this whole process to look at how we can modernise children's

:12:56.:13:00.

mental health services, makd the best use of the resources available,

:13:01.:13:04.

pooling all of the resources. It's a commission organised

:13:05.:13:09.

by four different organisathons We need to make that

:13:10.:13:12.

much more rational. Two of the patients at the

:13:13.:13:17.

Colchester unit are from Cornwall. Because there are between tdn

:13:18.:13:21.

and 15 young people being c`red for outside of Cornwall at `ny one

:13:22.:13:24.

time, Cornwall has to pay for that. The Cowburns say that

:13:25.:13:32.

costs ?2 million a year. The new unit would cost no lore

:13:33.:13:35.

and young people would be treated The Cornwall Partnership NHS

:13:36.:13:37.

Foundation Trust which runs mental health services in

:13:38.:13:42.

Cornwall says it welcomes the task force and that its clinical director

:13:43.:13:44.

will be providing some input. Meanwhile, it says

:13:45.:13:47.

the 30 beds here at Longreach House should reopen after building work

:13:48.:13:50.

by the end of the year. Well one member

:13:51.:13:58.

of the task force is Johnny Benjamin, he says he receivdd poor

:13:59.:14:01.

mental health care as a teenager I asked him

:14:02.:14:04.

what one thing needs changing to I mean, we know, in some ardas,

:14:05.:14:08.

funding has been cut by 94% There is no parity of esteel

:14:09.:14:19.

between physical health tre`tment Cuts keep coming to

:14:20.:14:23.

the mental health system and much Money is one thing, but it `lso

:14:24.:14:28.

depends on how that money is spent. What kinds of services

:14:29.:14:37.

on the ground are needed so that young people in particular

:14:38.:14:40.

get the help and support thdy need? We need to look at services

:14:41.:14:44.

on the ground and things like more beds and stopping young

:14:45.:14:47.

people being placed in adult wards. Also, stopping young people having

:14:48.:14:51.

to travel miles for treatment. Sometimes they have to travdl right

:14:52.:14:55.

across the country, which is really They need to be

:14:56.:14:57.

around their family and fridnds There is also

:14:58.:15:02.

a problem with waiting times. People are waiting for years

:15:03.:15:04.

for access to therapy The Minister says that the system

:15:05.:15:24.

isn't currently fit for purpose do you detect that something could come

:15:25.:15:27.

out of this task force? I do that something comes from this task

:15:28.:15:31.

force needs to change. I just hear stories

:15:32.:15:35.

of young people service. It is very rare to hear a

:15:36.:15:40.

good example of for young people, and the wrist the

:15:41.:15:47.

problem of when people turn 18, service, and so many people fall

:15:48.:15:53.

through the gap in many people are failed by the

:15:54.:15:59.

system. Thank you. The end of an era

:16:00.:16:00.

for a famous livestock markdt. It's carnival time in Weymotth,

:16:01.:16:01.

thousands are there, includhng Join us for the legendary c`rnival

:16:02.:16:03.

here in Weymouth, we are here with hundreds of thousands of other

:16:04.:16:21.

people and the world`famous red arrows.

:16:22.:16:24.

The North Devon town of Holsworthy is famous for its cattle market

:16:25.:16:26.

but today the hammer went down on the final sale in the site's

:16:27.:16:30.

last ever auction, ending a hundred years of bidding and bargaining

:16:31.:16:32.

A brand new market will soon open just outside the town,

:16:33.:16:35.

but it's still been a poign`nt day for farmers who?ve been selling

:16:36.:16:37.

Kirk England has been to medt those seeing the end of an dra.

:16:38.:16:44.

Very sad, really, because after about 107 years, it's going.

:16:45.:16:55.

This is the last time we are coming to this market.

:16:56.:16:59.

People came from far and wide for the last ever auction

:17:00.:17:01.

Surreal, I think, that is how it feels.

:17:02.:17:07.

You're standing back and looking at what is going on.

:17:08.:17:10.

There are a lot of people hdre, farmers coming in with stock,

:17:11.:17:13.

they want to be part of history and have animals here at thd last

:17:14.:17:17.

Livestock was eventually sold on the town square, before being moved to

:17:18.:17:23.

It has been sold now to pay for this, a ?6 million markdt

:17:24.:17:29.

An investment that many argte was vital for the local economy

:17:30.:17:38.

There was probably one third of all people involved in some shape

:17:39.:17:41.

If we took that out of the dquation, that would be an enormous g`p

:17:42.:17:46.

in what is happening in terls of productivity in the area

:17:47.:17:49.

in what is happening socially in the area as well as economically.

:17:50.:17:55.

The old market site has been bought by a housing developer and Tesco

:17:56.:17:58.

We have to compete against a supermarket.

:17:59.:18:07.

We are individual traders whth their individual niche at what we

:18:08.:18:13.

No`one from Tesco was avail`ble for comment, but the local business

:18:14.:18:21.

groups say that the planned store could attract more people into town.

:18:22.:18:27.

This is the last piece to be sold through

:18:28.:18:30.

Back at the market, the last hammer falls, and people

:18:31.:18:36.

are hoping the next 100 years will be as good as the last 100.

:18:37.:18:49.

It's been the end of an era too for the Royal Navy frigate HMS Plymouth.

:18:50.:18:52.

She's set sail to be scrappdd in a foreign port.

:18:53.:18:55.

She was one of the last surviving warships from the Falklands War

:18:56.:18:57.

It's believed she's heading for a port in Turkey.

:18:58.:19:09.

One of the main thing is th`t she is the surrender of South Georgia. She

:19:10.:19:21.

was involved in major action in the Falklands War and was severdly

:19:22.:19:24.

damaged during the action and claimed a number of hits on

:19:25.:19:27.

Argentinian aircraft also. Onto some sports news and

:19:28.:19:28.

in last night's football, Yeovil Town at last got off the mark

:19:29.:19:29.

in League One with a good away win. Plymouth Argyle staved

:19:30.:19:33.

off defeat with a late penalty, while Exeter City still wait for

:19:34.:19:35.

their first win of the new season. Yeovil Town relied on two mdmbers

:19:36.:19:38.

of their promotion`winning team at Wembley last year to delhver

:19:39.:19:41.

the goods at Walsall. James Hayter was

:19:42.:19:44.

in the right place at the rhght time to finish off an accurate cross from

:19:45.:19:47.

Kevin Dawson to put them on the path The Midlanders wiped that ott to

:19:48.:19:50.

:19:51.:19:56.

:19:57.:20:01.

in an encouraging 2`1 result. At Home Park,

:20:02.:20:07.

Plymouth Argyle were on the verge of going down to Stevenage who took

:20:08.:20:10.

an early second half lead. They held that

:20:11.:20:15.

until the eighth minute of `dded time, when a handball offence led to

:20:16.:20:18.

a penalty which Dean Smallex duly despatched to earn a 1`1 dr`w

:20:19.:20:21.

in front of a relieved 6,000 crowd. Exeter City are left

:20:22.:20:27.

frustrated once again. Still without a victory

:20:28.:20:29.

in league and cup, they went Former Weymouth striker

:21:04.:21:23.

Dorset calendar and bumper crowds have turned out for the Weylouth

:21:24.:21:29.

Carnival. We can cross to the town very much in a party mood.

:21:30.:21:37.

Good evening, Weymouth has been teeming with visitors and it still

:21:38.:21:41.

is this evening, soaking up the beautiful sunshine and the carnival

:21:42.:21:47.

atmosphere. The grand procession got underway about half an hour ago and

:21:48.:21:53.

you can see everybody behind me Luckily the military band

:21:54.:21:56.

quite here yet. Probably thd favourite with the crowd was the red

:21:57.:22:01.

arrows. Nine aircraft in of the pilots from the front line

squadron, today, they are ldd by Jim Turner, the Squadron Leader. The red

:22:10.:22:12.

arrows have flown more displays in 55 countries since their

:22:13.:22:18.

first performance back in 1865. Letters take a look now at the

:22:19.:22:24.

events leading up to today's grand procession.

:22:25.:22:30.

It is 5pm and the tension is building. Usually, reserved folk

:22:31.:22:40.

turn into animals. In contr`st, on the beach, there is some calm

:22:41.:22:46.

anticipation. A big party tonight. I am going to dress like a witch. I

:22:47.:22:52.

will dress like a princess, Cinderella. I heard some good things

:22:53.:22:59.

about it from last year. It is a big thing. It is our first time in

:23:00.:23:11.

Weymouth. We will see. Earlher, the first of two are displays bx

:23:12.:23:15.

aircraft from the First World War. I am quite

:23:16.:23:20.

working, because they have been through a lot. Their

:23:21.:23:24.

probably nearly breaking down. Staying with the military

:23:25.:23:27.

this carnival queen, believd it or not, is in the territorial @rmy I

:23:28.:23:31.

love all of it, I love the field, I love all of thd

:23:32.:23:38.

holiday`makers because of school holiday, but we have as a lot of

bonus that millions into the local economy
