A police officer has been fined ?500 after admitting crashing

his patrol car when he fell asleep at the wheel.

Jersey's Magistrate's court heard PC James Jenkinson had no control

over the vehicle in the moments before the crash.

The court heard how the accident happened in May this year.

PC Jenkinson was coming to the end of the first in a set of

night shifts and was carrying out routine patrols in his police car.

But just after 5am, he crashed in St Clements Road in St Helier.

The court heard he couldn't fully remember what happened ` his car hit

a kerb, and then a lamp post, before rolling onto its roof.

He managed to crawl out and call for help.

But the investigation into what happened was thorough ` the car was

fitted with an instrument recording device and could accurately show how

In the run`up to the crash, he was driving at 33mph

but crucially did not make any attempt to control the vehicle.

For 250 metres, he didn't steer, accelerate or brake.
