Good evening. for the news where you are.

:00:11.:00:15.

Seven scam victims in Jersey have been conned out

:00:16.:00:17.

Fraudsters called them posing as their banks

:00:18.:00:20.

and persuaded them to transfer money out of their accounts.

:00:21.:00:23.

For Iain and Reena Mclean, ht all started with a phone call.

:00:24.:00:32.

With a person at the other dnd claiming their credit card had been

:00:33.:00:39.

He gave me a reference numbdr and asked if I had my credit card.

:00:40.:00:47.

And he said, there is a number at the back of your credit card

:00:48.:00:50.

Iain did make that phone call but the fraudsters didn't dhsconnect

:00:51.:01:01.

the line and pretended they were from Iain and Reena's bank.

:01:02.:01:07.

They convinced them to transfer ?6,200 to what they thought

:01:08.:01:09.

But when Iain and Reena went to their branch

:01:10.:01:13.

and spoke to the bank managdr, they realised what had happened.

:01:14.:01:17.

I feel like we were being really stupid.

:01:18.:01:19.

But the fact that we thought we were on to the fraud department,

:01:20.:01:28.

Banks do not phone and ask people to transfer loney.

:01:29.:01:38.

They give apparently legitilate details to carry off their fraud.

:01:39.:01:42.

They might talk about particular transactions.

:01:43.:01:43.

It is important to realise that they will stop

:01:44.:01:47.

Iain and Reena don't want sympathy but

:01:48.:01:54.

say they don't want what's happened to them to happen to any others

:01:55.:02:04.

Would a deep water berth brhnging in more cruise ships be better

:02:05.:02:06.

There are calls for the isl`nd to take advantage of the growing

:02:07.:02:10.

popularity of cruise holidaxs by becoming more than just ` stop

:02:11.:02:13.

More than 100 cruise ships have moored off Guernsey this ye`r,

:02:14.:02:20.

with many already planning a return next year.

:02:21.:02:22.

It is one of the most visited ports

:02:23.:02:24.

in northern Europe for cruise passengers.

:02:25.:02:25.

But some feel the island should be more than a destination,

:02:26.:02:28.

An infrastructure expert who helped design Hong Kong's cruise tdrminal

:02:29.:02:36.

and is currently advising port planners at Fort Lauderdale

:02:37.:02:38.

in America says Guernsey should be a starting port for cruise ships.

:02:39.:02:44.

We could look at it becoming a turnaround port for cruishng.

:02:45.:02:50.

Taking advantage of revenues coming in, with people flying to

:02:51.:02:53.

the island, joining cruises and revenues while they are here,

:02:54.:02:56.

There would be an attraction for cruise operators with

:02:57.:03:05.

a potential of uplifting fudl at 15p per litre cheaper

:03:06.:03:07.

as a part of a single, integrated package.

:03:08.:03:16.

So would people be keen to fly to Guernsey to start their cruhse?

:03:17.:03:20.

We asked potential passengers in Hull.

:03:21.:03:21.

It sounds like it would be very intensive, with a significant

:03:22.:03:35.

I am not sure where that would fit in at the moment.

:03:36.:03:42.

Just one cruise ship overlooking Saint Peter Port today

:03:43.:03:44.

with established ports like Southampton,

:03:45.:03:48.

steering the right course whll take a lot of money and determin`tion.

:03:49.:03:55.

A 35`year`old woman is still in hospital in Jersey

:03:56.:03:58.

after a crash which overturned her car at Mont Sohier in St Brdlade

:03:59.:04:01.

Three passengers got out of the car unhurt,

:04:02.:04:06.

but the woman was trapped and had to be pulled out by fire crews.

:04:07.:04:10.

Her condition is said to be stable and comfortable.

:04:11.:04:12.

Police in Thailand say they are no closer to making an arrest

:04:13.:04:15.

in the investigation into the murder of Jersey man David Miller

:04:16.:04:17.

It is two weeks since their bodies were found on the island of Koh Tao.

:04:18.:04:22.

Police are now offering a rdward of more than ?13,000 to try to

:04:23.:04:25.

Guernsey's Chief Minister is at the Conservative Party Conference

:04:26.:04:33.

in Birmingham to boost understanding of channel islands issues

:04:34.:04:35.

Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq says he s had a full day

:04:36.:04:39.

He joined me from the conference earlier to

:04:40.:04:42.

We want to work on passenger duty but we will have to look

:04:43.:04:56.

at other things and with an election coming up we must hold

:04:57.:04:59.

We need to build on relationships as much as we can and tax will always

:05:00.:05:11.

be an issue. The UK politichans bashing these tax havens, which they

:05:12.:05:15.

lump us in with sometimes, the Channel Islands, it goes down well

:05:16.:05:20.

with UK voters. Had you get the message out there that the Channel

:05:21.:05:25.

Islands are clean? We are p`rt of the solution. We have authorities

:05:26.:05:28.

and systems and the message is getting through. We have frhends

:05:29.:05:33.

that will speak for us when we are not around. We cannot be in all

:05:34.:05:38.

places at all times. In Westminster, in Brussels, we have people that

:05:39.:05:43.

understand us and can defend us when we are being misrepresented. Does it

:05:44.:05:48.

make you wish we had party politics in the Channel Islands, seehng that

:05:49.:05:52.

politicians support each other and voters know what they stand for We

:05:53.:05:58.

know that forums exist at p`rty conferences like this which can

:05:59.:06:01.

inform people so that they know what they are voting for. But I think the

:06:02.:06:07.

system working in the UK wotld not work in Jerseyl and Guernsex. That

:06:08.:06:13.

is the news from BBC Channel Islands News. Now the weather. More

:06:14.:06:17.

unsettled weather coming in the next week. Moving into next week it looks

:06:18.:06:23.

generally a lot more unsettled. Tomorrow, cloudy and first`hand then

:06:24.:06:29.

some sunshine breaking throtgh the crowd and brighter. A possibility of

:06:30.:06:32.

some spits and spots of rain into the evening tomorrow evening.

:06:33.:06:37.

Further on, a chance of showers appearing but I do not think we will

:06:38.:06:42.

see many of them. Rather cloudy and misty in places. Night`time

:06:43.:06:48.

temperatures not lower than 15. Tomorrow we are expecting the cloud

:06:49.:06:51.

fairly thick at first but breaking up into sunny spells moving into the

:06:52.:06:56.

afternoon. Effectively a drx day and anywhere from 18 up to 20, 60 eight

:06:57.:07:01.

Fahrenheit. Wind mostly frol the south`west. Variable in the

:07:02.:07:07.

afternoon. On Wednesday a couple of weaker weather fronts. They might be

:07:08.:07:12.

enough to produce some rain but on the whole cloudy and dry on

:07:13.:07:18.

Wednesday. Friday night, we will see quite a big change. On Frid`y night

:07:19.:07:22.

I think we will have more pdrsistent rain and also becoming quitd windy

:07:23.:07:27.

for the start of Saturday. Hn a second we will have the UK forecast.

:07:28.:07:28.

But from the team here, more breezy. Now for the n!tional

:07:29.:07:31.

weather. Good evening. We all know that

:07:32.:07:41.

summer has been a bit extended this year. It has been a very dry and

:07:42.:07:48.

warm month. On the final day of September, we are promised more dry

:07:49.:07:52.

weather once we have lost early morning mist and fog. There will be

:07:53.:07:56.

some rain creeping into western areas. Ahead of that, we have been

:07:57.:08:01.

drawing up big showers from France. A few thunder storms today.

:08:02.:08:04.

Downpours over

:08:05.:08:06.
