Tonight, on BBC London News, the mother of a teenager who took her | :00:00. | :00:21.
own life warns of a dark side on the Internet. It is every parent's worst | :00:22. | :00:32.
nightmare. How an increase in construction jobs has helped reduce | :00:33. | :00:36.
unemployment in the capital. The new high`speed line ploughs on ` after | :00:37. | :00:39.
campaigners lose a legal battle at the Supreme Court. And diver Tom | :00:40. | :00:43.
Daley on coming out ` and coming to the capital. | :00:44. | :01:02.
Good evening, welcome to the programme. The mother of a London | :01:03. | :01:08.
teenager who killed herself has urged every parent to be aware of | :01:09. | :01:13.
the dangers of the internet. At the inquest, a jury heard that | :01:14. | :01:15.
15`year`old Tallulah Wilson was a gifted dancer who became obsessed | :01:16. | :01:18.
with a fantasy world online to escape reality. Her family said in | :01:19. | :01:24.
her last few weeks they could not reach her as she was "in the | :01:25. | :01:29.
clutches of a toxic digital world". They say they are shocked by the | :01:30. | :01:33.
ease with which children can access online self`harm and suicide blogs. | :01:34. | :01:34.
Marc Ashdown reports. Described by the coroner is a very | :01:35. | :01:47.
lovely looking young lady, but Tallulah Wilson wrote in her diary | :01:48. | :01:50.
that she felt fat, ugly and worthless. The 15`year`old died when | :01:51. | :01:55.
she was hit by a train at St pancreas in October 2012. The | :01:56. | :01:59.
inquest jury today said the case highlighted the importance of online | :02:00. | :02:02.
life for young people. In a statement read by her lawyer, her | :02:03. | :02:06.
mother warned of the dangers on behalf of sisters and I did | :02:07. | :02:09.
everything we could to keep her safe, but she had fallen into a | :02:10. | :02:13.
world of nightmares. She was in the clutches of a toxic digital world, | :02:14. | :02:17.
where, in the final few weeks, we could no longer reach her. I was | :02:18. | :02:22.
shocked by the EE is with which this card and other children can access | :02:23. | :02:29.
online self`harm and suicide blogs. One site she went on and encourages | :02:30. | :02:35.
users to post pictures and blog about their interests. She created a | :02:36. | :02:39.
secret online alias, a cocaine taking character, and posted | :02:40. | :02:44.
pictures of self`inflicted cuts on her arms and also shared thoughts | :02:45. | :02:48.
about suicide. Her obsession with the internet did not seem to affect | :02:49. | :02:52.
school life here in north London. The headteacher said in a statement, | :02:53. | :02:56.
Tallulah was a charming, effervescent and highly popular | :02:57. | :02:57.
girl... She was being treated for | :02:58. | :03:10.
depression, and her mother had one of the profiles shuts down after | :03:11. | :03:13.
finding it. One leading charity which helps vulnerable young people | :03:14. | :03:19.
says the sites themselves should take more responsibility. We are | :03:20. | :03:25.
increasingly aware of the need for controls and support and education | :03:26. | :03:28.
for young people themselves, and for parents and others who are concerned | :03:29. | :03:31.
about their well`being. In a statement, one website said... | :03:32. | :03:42.
It is of course too late for Tallulah Wilson, who escaped into a | :03:43. | :03:49.
fantasy online life, which, this inquest found, eventually drove her | :03:50. | :03:52.
to take her own life. Plenty more to come tonight, | :03:53. | :04:00.
including... At 1.I thought, this guy is for real, this is going to go | :04:01. | :04:04.
wrong. But then, you get on with it and you get on with your job. A | :04:05. | :04:17.
story of heroism which has won this policeman an award for bravery. | :04:18. | :04:22.
Campaigners have lost their latest legal battle against the HS2 rail | :04:23. | :04:26.
link` after judges dismissed their claims that ministers had failed to | :04:27. | :04:28.
consider fully the environmental impact. The Supreme Court rejected | :04:29. | :04:31.
allegations that the Government was "cutting corners" to push through | :04:32. | :04:33.
the high`speed rail line between London and the Midlands. Our | :04:34. | :04:36.
political correspondent Karl Mercer has this report. The further appeal | :04:37. | :04:50.
to this court is unanimous `` unanimously dismissed. Campaigners | :04:51. | :04:57.
have been outside Parliament, but this morning, they had hoped to the | :04:58. | :05:02.
courts might slow down plans for the north`south rail link. They did not | :05:03. | :05:08.
get the result they wanted. We are disappointed because we have wanted | :05:09. | :05:11.
it to go our way. But it is not the end of the road for us. We are going | :05:12. | :05:14.
to keep fighting, we have other options open to us. We believe it is | :05:15. | :05:18.
vital to press the Government to comply with their implications, | :05:19. | :05:24.
which they have not done. `` obligations. Campaigners have said | :05:25. | :05:28.
they will now look to Europe for further challenges to the high`speed | :05:29. | :05:32.
link, but the Government says the is essential and be when people look at | :05:33. | :05:37.
this ruling, I hope they will understand we really are taking care | :05:38. | :05:40.
around the environment of issues. We recognise those concerns, we are | :05:41. | :05:44.
putting in all kinds of litigation. But what is important about this | :05:45. | :05:47.
project is that it is very much needed to give us the additional | :05:48. | :05:52.
trains, additional seats on trains and capacity. These are the hard | :05:53. | :05:56.
copies of the bill the Government is hoping to push through Parliament | :05:57. | :05:58.
before the next election. They are being sent out to libraries from a | :05:59. | :06:06.
depot in east London. The Government knows that at many points along the | :06:07. | :06:11.
route, it will face further protests over its plans, but it says it wants | :06:12. | :06:14.
to start work on HS2 in 2017. London is becoming a younger city, | :06:15. | :06:26.
according to new research. Typically, many people would leave | :06:27. | :06:29.
the capital after having children, because of schools or the need for | :06:30. | :06:32.
larger homes. But one leading estate agent says there's a growing number | :06:33. | :06:35.
of families who are now staying put. Jean MacKenzie reports. London has | :06:36. | :06:43.
always been a young city, attracting people from across the world to work | :06:44. | :06:47.
or study. But typically, when those people get older and have children, | :06:48. | :06:53.
many decide to leave London. But new research shows that is changing, | :06:54. | :06:56.
with many now deciding to stay put and raise a family here. I never, | :06:57. | :07:04.
ever thought I would for me, London seemed a place to have fun, go out, | :07:05. | :07:11.
meet new friends. But 13 years and two children later, Michelle, like | :07:12. | :07:15.
many others, is still here. The average age of London has fallen by | :07:16. | :07:21.
nearly two years over three decades, from 37.2 to 35.6. A rising birth | :07:22. | :07:28.
rate and immigration have played a part, but so have changes to London | :07:29. | :07:32.
itself. The quality of living in London has improved, we have seen a | :07:33. | :07:37.
lot of regeneration. And so has the quality of schools. Schools are a | :07:38. | :07:42.
lot better now than they were two decades ago. That is exactly how | :07:43. | :07:49.
Emily feels. There is nothing pushing us to go. We always thought | :07:50. | :07:53.
when we got to school age, we would have to go. But we live next door to | :07:54. | :07:58.
an outstanding school. But fewer people leaving means not just a | :07:59. | :08:01.
younger population, but a larger one. As the population of the city | :08:02. | :08:07.
rises by 100,000 a year, a million every decade, that requires a large | :08:08. | :08:11.
number of new houses, and all the things that go with it, or transport | :08:12. | :08:16.
capacity, more everything. It is predicted that has the economy | :08:17. | :08:20.
improves across the UK, more people may start to leave the capital | :08:21. | :08:24.
again. But it is doubtful this city will ever lose its youthfulness. | :08:25. | :08:31.
There has been some positive news on jobs today, with a fall in | :08:32. | :08:36.
unemployment in London. Between September and November 20 13, were | :08:37. | :08:43.
unemployed in the capital, down by 18,000 on the previous quarter. | :08:44. | :08:49.
There is still uncertainty in the retail sector, however. Tim Donovan | :08:50. | :08:59.
reports. It was to Heathrow's nearly refurbished second terminal that the | :09:00. | :09:04.
minister came today. It was the ideal place to mark today's positive | :09:05. | :09:12.
jobs figures. We have got to get the economy buoyant, we have got to get | :09:13. | :09:16.
more people into jobs. It is about life fulfilment, security, | :09:17. | :09:20.
supporting the family and the local community. These two are just about | :09:21. | :09:25.
to complete their four year apprenticeship in maintenance | :09:26. | :09:27.
engineering at the airport. What chance a job here and now? It is an | :09:28. | :09:32.
internal application, and they tried to fit us in. Lots of jobs around | :09:33. | :09:38.
the airport. Can you foresee that you will end up with a career here? | :09:39. | :09:43.
Definitely. There are already jobs being lined up for us at the moment. | :09:44. | :09:49.
Over the last year, unemployment has come down by Northpoint 2% in | :09:50. | :09:53.
London, the lowest improvement rate in the country. The jobless rate is | :09:54. | :10:02.
above the national average. `` 0.2%. It is still well above the | :10:03. | :10:04.
unemployment rate from before the crash. It seems that construction | :10:05. | :10:09.
and services are healthier than some other sectors. Professional | :10:10. | :10:14.
services, business services, the IT sector, are doing particularly well, | :10:15. | :10:18.
in terms of growth employment, we are still seeing concern amongst | :10:19. | :10:23.
retailers, hospitality, tourism and leisure. In Hayes, just down the | :10:24. | :10:31.
road, there has been sluggish growth on the high street. But there is | :10:32. | :10:36.
optimism for the future. We have got a new supermarket opening, we have | :10:37. | :10:39.
got an international IT company which is making its headquarters | :10:40. | :10:44.
here. And we are going to be redeveloping the old VM eyesight, | :10:45. | :10:51.
creating 4000 jobs. Such optimism may not be shared across London. But | :10:52. | :10:55.
many are now looking for a sustained improvement in the jobs market in | :10:56. | :11:02.
the capital. Two men have been charged with supplying drugs | :11:03. | :11:05.
following the death of a 16`year`old boy from Croydon. Daniel | :11:06. | :11:10.
Spargo`Mabbs died in hospital on Monday after apparently taking | :11:11. | :11:13.
ecstasy at a party in London at the weekend. 18`year`old | :11:14. | :11:19.
Nicqueel?Pitrora and 20`year`old Ryan Kirk were due to appear before | :11:20. | :11:23.
magistrates today. Speaking to Vanessa Feltz on the radio, | :11:24. | :11:27.
Daniel's father had business edge for anyone tempted to take an | :11:28. | :11:31.
illegal drug. We want to say to any child out there, tempted to take any | :11:32. | :11:37.
illegal drug, talk to us first, we will tell you about the machines, | :11:38. | :11:43.
the hospital, the ventilator, the whole shebang. The policeman who | :11:44. | :11:51.
arrested a man wielding a samurai sword. He said he was just doing his | :11:52. | :11:55.
job. But one year on, leave Brown has been awarded for his bravery. | :11:56. | :12:07.
He has been voted the bravest officer on the force. Just over a | :12:08. | :12:13.
year ago, was in a much more uncomfortable position. On Christmas | :12:14. | :12:17.
Eve, a man had randomly stabbed a young woman with a samurai sword. | :12:18. | :12:22.
The sergeant chased him and found himself facing the weapon. He pulled | :12:23. | :12:29.
a sword and started swinging at me. After a bit of to and fro in, I | :12:30. | :12:36.
eventually apprehended him. A bag of swords and knives and a crossbow was | :12:37. | :12:44.
found on the man, who will spend the rest of his life in a secure mental | :12:45. | :12:49.
unit. There is an element of risk, you know that when you it is better | :12:50. | :12:53.
that I put my life on the line, rather than a member of the public, | :12:54. | :12:57.
because it is my job to do that. More than 6000 members of the public | :12:58. | :13:04.
voted for Seve. They hit him three times on the arm, which made him | :13:05. | :13:08.
drop his sword... His colleagues agree he is more than deserving. He | :13:09. | :13:14.
arrested an individual who was intent he had tried to kill someone, | :13:15. | :13:19.
and then he tried to kill but police officer. The fact that Steve did not | :13:20. | :13:22.
back off and arrested the individual, it is an outstanding | :13:23. | :13:28.
achievement. Metropolitan Police has received some negative press | :13:29. | :13:30.
recently, but today, there was a positive message, to recognise those | :13:31. | :13:35.
that put themselves at risk to protect the public every day. | :13:36. | :13:42.
Still to come this evening... Join me for a view of the largest solar | :13:43. | :13:53.
panel bridge in the world. And Tom Daley tells us why it's great to be | :13:54. | :13:55.
living and training in London. With the recent success of actors | :13:56. | :14:10.
like Naomi Harris and director Steve McQueen, it may seem like diversity | :14:11. | :14:16.
in the creative industries is improving. But according to a recent | :14:17. | :14:23.
survey, it is not the case. Brenda Emmanus reports. | :14:24. | :14:35.
Degree students at the mettle film school based at Ealing Studios, | :14:36. | :14:43.
developing their skills, Pope of a successful career in the film | :14:44. | :14:50.
industry. If you work hard enough, people will realise, and they will | :14:51. | :14:56.
see potential. You would expect to be doing amazing things next year, | :14:57. | :15:00.
but I am doing what I love, and hopefully I will get the break. They | :15:01. | :15:03.
may be fuelled with optimism, but the realities of the industry are | :15:04. | :15:09.
yet according to the latest census, the creative industries are becoming | :15:10. | :15:15.
less diverse. The first survey, in 2003, only included figures for film | :15:16. | :15:18.
and television, but revealed that the percentage of ethnic minorities | :15:19. | :15:23.
working in the industry was 7.4%. The latest figure was only 5.4%. | :15:24. | :15:28.
That included a wider section of the creative industries. There are all | :15:29. | :15:34.
sorts of reasons why UCD 's numbers. The industry is much more freelance | :15:35. | :15:38.
than it was five or ten years ago. `` why you see these numbers. Some | :15:39. | :15:44.
people have given up and gone off to do other things. The culture | :15:45. | :15:49.
minister today had a meeting here in Westminster with leaders in the | :15:50. | :15:52.
creative industry to understand the problem and build a consensus about | :15:53. | :15:56.
what needs to be done and to generate industry commitment to | :15:57. | :15:57.
action. 12 years of slaves sees | :15:58. | :16:10.
Oscar`nominated and is for Steve McQueen `` 12 Years A Slave. There | :16:11. | :16:18.
is grounds for hope but a strong desire for more. It has to change. | :16:19. | :16:23.
If they wanted to get better, it is all`inclusive. You have a British | :16:24. | :16:29.
actor up for an Oscar, a black British actor up for an Oscar, but | :16:30. | :16:33.
it is very funny that all of a sudden, when you do hit America and | :16:34. | :16:38.
do very well, you do very well here. But it doesn't seem to happen the | :16:39. | :16:43.
other way round! If the talks today are the beginning of radical change, | :16:44. | :16:48.
then the optimism for all these students may be justified. | :16:49. | :16:51.
They're a world first, but most people won't get to see them. 4,500 | :16:52. | :16:55.
solar panels have been installed on the roof of Blackfriars Station | :16:56. | :17:02.
which spans the Thames. As Alice Bhandhukravi reports, it's part of a | :17:03. | :17:08.
multi`million pound refurbishment. It has always been unique in being | :17:09. | :17:12.
the only station which crosses the Thames, but now Blackfriars can | :17:13. | :17:17.
boast another special feature, its solar roof. Almost 4500 solar panels | :17:18. | :17:22.
spanning the length of the bridge. It is part of a major upgrade which | :17:23. | :17:26.
has seen it going from a dingy Victorian station to an airy modern | :17:27. | :17:33.
hub. Only 10% of the energy needs are being generated by the solar | :17:34. | :17:36.
panel roof, but in the height of summer, it could be as much as 50%. | :17:37. | :17:41.
It may looks patience but it is also very busy. Almost 40,000 passengers | :17:42. | :17:46.
use Blackfriars every day. Although they have already been through the | :17:47. | :17:50.
worst in terms of construction work and delays, there is more to come. | :17:51. | :17:55.
London Bridge will soon be closed as part of the Thames Link programme to | :17:56. | :17:58.
improve the route and allow for longer trains and that will put | :17:59. | :18:02.
pressure on passengers at Blackfriars. But first at macro | :18:03. | :18:08.
capital Connect insists it is part of the pain. If we carried on the | :18:09. | :18:12.
way we were with the same stations and the same trains we would not | :18:13. | :18:16.
have been able to increase capacity, we would have extremely | :18:17. | :18:21.
overcrowded trains. This had to be a project to increase capacity across | :18:22. | :18:25.
the whole route and it will benefit customers significantly when it is | :18:26. | :18:30.
completed. As for the solar panels, they will eventually pay for it | :18:31. | :18:34.
themselves through energy savings, albeit over 15 years. | :18:35. | :18:37.
Next, she's an actress, a fashion designer, and now Sadie Frost is | :18:38. | :18:40.
turning acrobat ` with a special performance tonight at the | :18:41. | :18:44.
Roundhouse in Camden. The show, Fuertzabruta, which features | :18:45. | :18:45.
high`flying circus stunts, made headlines a few days ago, after part | :18:46. | :18:49.
of the set collapsed ,injuring four people in the audience. This report | :18:50. | :18:53.
from Emilia Papadopoulos contains some flashing images. | :18:54. | :19:04.
Aerial acrobatics and 80 minutes of mad stunts, just inches from the | :19:05. | :19:11.
audience. The Argentinian show is full on in there since Theatre. | :19:12. | :19:19.
Tonight they welcome an unlikely star, the actress Sadie Frost. I | :19:20. | :19:25.
said I would like to appear as a joke but they said they could make | :19:26. | :19:29.
it happen. The first time in the rehearsal I thought, what have I | :19:30. | :19:37.
signed myself up for. Fuertzabruta translates as root force. Things | :19:38. | :19:41.
went wrong a few days ago when part of the set collapsed on spectators | :19:42. | :19:48.
below. That has not put Sadie off. Unfortunately, these things happen. | :19:49. | :19:52.
Technical things can go wrong. In the history of this show nothing has | :19:53. | :19:56.
gone wrong and they are very vigilant on health and is a the end | :19:57. | :20:01.
all that kind of stuff. The show relies heavily on teamwork and trust | :20:02. | :20:05.
and that has meant intense rehearsals for the last few weeks. | :20:06. | :20:10.
But for Sadie, it is worth it and performing at the Roundhouse in | :20:11. | :20:14.
Camden holds sentimental value. I grew up in this area. I feel | :20:15. | :20:20.
connected to it. I used to come here to community ventures when my father | :20:21. | :20:25.
worked here in the 70s. You may not be lucky enough to see Sadie in | :20:26. | :20:29.
action because tonight's show was all sold out but Fuertzabruta is on | :20:30. | :20:33.
until March. Manchester United have made a bid in | :20:34. | :20:36.
the region of ?35 million for the Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata. It's | :20:37. | :20:40.
thought the offer is likely to be rejected, with Chelsea holding out | :20:41. | :20:43.
for more money before the January transfer window ends next week. | :20:44. | :20:46.
Significantly Mata, who is not injured, did not train with Jose | :20:47. | :20:49.
Mourinho's first team squad this morning. | :20:50. | :20:59.
Olympic diver Tom Daley says he has been "overwhelmed" by the support | :21:00. | :21:02.
shown since announcing he is in a gay relationship. He was speaking as | :21:03. | :21:06.
he took part in his first training session at the Aquatics Centre in | :21:07. | :21:10.
Stratford, his new base ahead of the Rio Games in 2016. The BBC's Olympic | :21:11. | :21:14.
sports reporter, Nick Hope, has been to meet him. | :21:15. | :21:23.
London will always hold a special place in Tom Daley's heart. 18 | :21:24. | :21:27.
months ago he dived to Olympic bronze here but now he is back. | :21:28. | :21:32.
Leaving his birthplace of Plymouth for full`time life in the capital. I | :21:33. | :21:36.
decided to spread my wings a little bit and move to the big city, moved | :21:37. | :21:41.
to London. I think every athlete wants to try new things and | :21:42. | :21:44.
experiment with new ideas and I think keeping it fresh, it has given | :21:45. | :21:49.
me a massive motivation boost as well. Daily has made headlines since | :21:50. | :21:56.
winning World Championships gold in `` at the age of 15. And his ITV | :21:57. | :22:05.
Splash programme has also given him attention but he has also released | :22:06. | :22:08.
an online video revealing he is in a relationship with a gay man. Is it a | :22:09. | :22:16.
big deal? I do not think so. He has been pleased with the response since | :22:17. | :22:21.
then. The response from the media and the public has been | :22:22. | :22:24.
overwhelming. I could not be happier here training with Jane in the new | :22:25. | :22:28.
facilities. It feels like hopefully 2014 will be a good new `` year. He | :22:29. | :22:39.
has decided to focus on his sporting achievements and later in the summer | :22:40. | :22:43.
he will focus on the commonwealth games in Glasgow. I have been really | :22:44. | :22:47.
excited so far because touch wood, this season, I have not had too many | :22:48. | :22:52.
niggles. This base, the new coach and the fact I do not have to travel | :22:53. | :22:56.
as much will make such a difference leading into Rio. He knows what it | :22:57. | :23:03.
takes to climb up the Olympic podium and with his new London training | :23:04. | :23:08.
place, he is convinced he can better bronze in the Rio games in 2016. | :23:09. | :23:14.
It is that time of the evening to get a check on the weather. How are | :23:15. | :23:16.
things looking, Wendy? It is a bit like spring out there | :23:17. | :23:27.
because I have heard of blossom and daffodils but this mild weather has | :23:28. | :23:32.
come with a lot of rain. And over the next few days there will be more | :23:33. | :23:37.
spells of that. The timings of these rain bands will be somewhat tricky | :23:38. | :23:41.
to pin down because it has changed radically for Friday already. We | :23:42. | :23:46.
have a few showers this evening. I have seen some showing up across | :23:47. | :23:50.
Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. A lot of the first part of the night | :23:51. | :23:54.
will be dry and clear. Then maybe one or two macro mist and fog | :23:55. | :23:57.
patches. It will be cold enough across much of the Home Counties for | :23:58. | :24:04.
some folk to form. `` some frost to form. A bit of Amy P `` a bit of Amy | :24:05. | :24:14.
P start tomorrow. There is an intense band of rain scheduled. That | :24:15. | :24:20.
whiz is through to the east. There could be some heavy downpours. A | :24:21. | :24:24.
rumble of thunder and hail is not out of the question. It will feel | :24:25. | :24:30.
distinctly colder. Seven to eight degrees, up to nine in central | :24:31. | :24:35.
London. Then that clears away. The next thing we have to watch is this | :24:36. | :24:39.
complicated weather system for Friday. We thought it would come | :24:40. | :24:42.
through overnight on Friday into Saturday but it looks like we will | :24:43. | :24:47.
have a wet and windy day on Friday itself. Saturday, we are in between | :24:48. | :24:51.
weather fronts. On Sunday we have to look out for this system. That is | :24:52. | :24:56.
what has been bringing the snow to Washington and New York. That will | :24:57. | :24:59.
bring us some heavy rain as we go through the day on Sunday. We have | :25:00. | :25:04.
an early weather warning for rain on Sunday. Spells of rain to come, the | :25:05. | :25:10.
timing is a little dodgy, but we will keep you posted! | :25:11. | :25:15.
The main headlines: There's been a sharp fall in unemployment, to 2.3 | :25:16. | :25:19.
million. The jobless rate now stands just above the Bank of England's | :25:20. | :25:22.
target figure which could prompt a rise in interest rates. | :25:23. | :25:25.
Former footballer, Stan Collymore has accused the social media site | :25:26. | :25:28.
Twitter of failing to do enough to tackle abusive messages. Police say | :25:29. | :25:33.
they're investigating, after he received racist and abusive | :25:34. | :25:38.
messages. There's been more violence in the | :25:39. | :25:41.
Ukrainian capital, Kiev, where two protestors were shot dead by police | :25:42. | :25:49.
during the night. That's all from us for now. Plenty | :25:50. | :25:53.
more on our website and Chris Rogers will be back with our late news. | :25:54. | :25:57.
From me and the team here, have a lovely evening. | :25:58. | :26:19.
We all have hopes and fears for the future | :26:20. | :26:22.
and for the lives our children and grandchildren will lead. | :26:23. | :26:26.
I want to build a Britain where everyone feels secure, | :26:27. | :26:30.
so our long-term economic plan is building a stronger, | :26:31. | :26:34.
more competitive economy and securing our country's future. | :26:35. | :26:39. |
