maternal death rate is higher than the rest of the UK. Today's data

shows things are improving. Not one hospital in London has a consultant

on its labour ward all of the time. We notice much, much less cover and

care during the weekend and overnight it was shocking at times.

Hospitals had to assess themselves on how care was provided on weekdays

and weekends, when you have a 10% higher risk of dying.

In almost every London hospital you can expect there to be an

experienced doctor in A, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You'll get

that here at the Royal London. Come here to have a baby and you will not

necessarily get one`to`one care from a midwife. UCLH did meet that

target. When it comes to emergency surgery, if you come here during the

week, you are likely to see a consulant within 12 hours. At the

weekend, you are not. We know there is variation. Some of the standards

are difficult to meet. What we know and what I am very encouraged by is

organisations, teams of doctors, teams of nurses have at least begun

to change the way they work in order to ensure there is that consistency

of clinical practise. So, there is progress in hospitals, but it still

depends on when and where you go. An engine is thought to have blown

up on an airliner seconds before it was due to leave London's City

airport this afternoon. Passengers were evacuated. Four people suffered
