the papers on the BBC News Channel in a few minutes. Now | :00:00. | :00:19.
Good evening. Millions of commuters had their | :00:20. | :00:22.
journeys disrupted on the first full day of the tube strike. Today's | :00:23. | :00:28.
action, over plans to close ticket offices, brought parts of the | :00:29. | :00:31.
network to a standstill. But there's a row over how effective it's been. | :00:32. | :00:35.
The walk`out continues until tomorrow evening, with another | :00:36. | :00:38.
strike planned for next week. Here's our transport correspondent Tom | :00:39. | :00:44.
Edwards. It was dubbed Crush hour. Millions | :00:45. | :00:50.
had to battle to work through the queues, delays and disruption. It | :00:51. | :00:55.
brings London to a relative standstill. It is chaos. It has | :00:56. | :01:01.
caused murder on the buses and cabs and everywhere you go. The strikes | :01:02. | :01:06.
are about changes to some of the biggest in the tube history. London | :01:07. | :01:11.
Underground want staff at busy stations on the concourses. That | :01:12. | :01:15.
will mean at more of the quieter ones staff will work alone. I can | :01:16. | :01:21.
understand people want to be paid properly but don't take it out on | :01:22. | :01:26.
ask. I absolutely support them. Of course it makes travel difficult but | :01:27. | :01:32.
that is the point. It will allow London Underground to move their | :01:33. | :01:36.
positions, stop being so dogmatic and call a halt to the job losses. | :01:37. | :01:42.
Call a halt to closing every single booking office and have proper | :01:43. | :01:48.
meaningful consultation. The RMT thought they had got a review of | :01:49. | :01:53.
ticket offices from London Underground in every station. This | :01:54. | :01:57.
letter to the late Bob Crow outlines it which could result in some ticket | :01:58. | :02:02.
offices remaining open. Transport bosses blame a lack of engagement | :02:03. | :02:08.
and say all to get offices will be closed. Unfortunately, the RMT's | :02:09. | :02:12.
approach has been to say no to everything. I have not heard a | :02:13. | :02:17.
single constructive proposal from them. The underground closed for a | :02:18. | :02:23.
one`day strike... The tube has a history of strikes. This was 1962. | :02:24. | :02:32.
But we are entering a turbulent period. London Underground has to | :02:33. | :02:36.
save money after a government grant was cut. These changes could also | :02:37. | :02:42.
provide valuable retail space. Why don't we keep the ticket office is | :02:43. | :02:46.
open to give people a sense of safety and security that they want? | :02:47. | :02:52.
The Mayor once opposed to good office closures. Politics is a big | :02:53. | :02:57.
part of this dispute. There is also a leadership contest at the RMT. Our | :02:58. | :03:03.
London are suffering because of your dispute? What is happening, I do not | :03:04. | :03:07.
want to intrude into the private grief of the RMT, but I think there | :03:08. | :03:13.
is unquestionably an issue about the succession of the leadership there | :03:14. | :03:17.
and there is a little bit of a power vacuum. The RMT deny that but so | :03:18. | :03:23.
far, compromise looks a long way off. Commuters can expect the same | :03:24. | :03:26.
thing tomorrow. And Tom's outside Warren Street | :03:27. | :03:28.
Station. What's your assessment of today? The last trains have left | :03:29. | :03:38.
central London. I think privately TFL will be quite pleased with | :03:39. | :03:42.
themselves, talking about running 50% of services. The flip side of | :03:43. | :03:47.
that is 50% of services did not run and that caused Heck of a lot of | :03:48. | :03:53.
disruption interestingly, TFL released some oyster data. They said | :03:54. | :03:57.
90% of cards which were normally used were used today on TFL | :03:58. | :04:02.
services. Presumably that means a lot of people switched over to | :04:03. | :04:08.
buses. It also implies 10% of people worked from home, walked or cycle to | :04:09. | :04:14.
work. In terms of this dispute, weighed we go from here? We have | :04:15. | :04:19.
three days of tube strikes planned for next week. I think the earliest | :04:20. | :04:23.
we could get talks is Friday. That Israeli cutting it fine. At the | :04:24. | :04:29.
moment, both sides are completely entrenched. Thank you. | :04:30. | :04:32.
So with the strike continuing until tomorrow evening let's see how | :04:33. | :04:36.
things are looking for tomorrow. We can cross to Alice Bhandhukravi | :04:37. | :04:41.
who's got the details. Thank you. | :04:42. | :04:44.
The main problem today was on the roads, there was gridlock in parts | :04:45. | :04:47.
of central London, especially in the West End, and that may well be the | :04:48. | :04:51.
case tomorrow. Now on public transport, the services which worked | :04:52. | :04:54.
well today are expected to operate tomorrow, that means the Overground | :04:55. | :04:57.
and the DLR will be running, and there will be extra bus services. | :04:58. | :05:01.
But of course, it has been very difficult for most of us travelling | :05:02. | :05:06.
around today. This is the current picture and we can expect more | :05:07. | :05:08.
problems tomorrow on the following lines: | :05:09. | :05:12.
Firstly the Waterloo and City Line, which has no service at all. There | :05:13. | :05:18.
are some station closures on the Northern Line, the Jubilee Line and | :05:19. | :05:21.
the Victoria Line although all three are running a limited service. The | :05:22. | :05:27.
Circle Line is running between Hammersmith and Aldgate, but there | :05:28. | :05:30.
are station closures. The Hammersmith City is running but | :05:31. | :05:33.
only between Edgware Road and Barking, again with station closures | :05:34. | :05:38.
along the way. For the Piccadilly Line, there is no service, except | :05:39. | :05:42.
for the west end of the line. Check before you travel especially if | :05:43. | :05:47.
you're trying to get to Heathrow. There's a patchy service on the | :05:48. | :05:50.
District Line, with some stations closed. And it's a similar picture | :05:51. | :05:54.
for the Central Line, some trains are running, especially to the far | :05:55. | :05:57.
west and the far east of the line, but trains are not stopping at all | :05:58. | :06:01.
the stations on the line. Finally there is no service on Heathrow | :06:02. | :06:09.
Connect. That is because of separate strike action. Heathrow Express has | :06:10. | :06:14.
a reduced service. And we'll be keeping you up`to`date | :06:15. | :06:16.
with all the latest travel information throughout the strikes. | :06:17. | :06:20.
There are regular updates on our radio station BBC London 94.9. You | :06:21. | :06:25.
can also follow developments on our website and on Twitter. And we'll | :06:26. | :06:30.
bring you the latest in our TV bulletins tomorrow morning during | :06:31. | :06:32.
Breakfast. That's all from me. So I'll wish you | :06:33. | :06:37.
a very goodnight and hand you over to Sara for the weather. | :06:38. | :06:47.
Thank you. To add to the travel woes, tomorrow morning we could be | :06:48. | :06:50.
looking at the fog which could affect some of the airports. Once | :06:51. | :06:55.
the fog clears away, it is looking like a nice day tomorrow and warmer | :06:56. | :07:01.
than today. We do have some mist and fog to form by tomorrow morning. It | :07:02. | :07:08.
could be Gatwick Airport which is affected by that. And of course if | :07:09. | :07:13.
you are travelling on the roads. Eventually, that starts to clear | :07:14. | :07:16.
away. Then the sun starts to come out and it could be warmer than | :07:17. | :07:27.
today. It is all change on Thursday. A lot of rain to start the day and | :07:28. | :07:33.
some sharp showers. It will be colder still on Friday. | :07:34. | :07:42.
Hello again, the holiday weekend is not far-away. We are still expecting | :07:43. | :07:46.
the weather to change significantly before then. Some patchy rain from | :07:47. | :07:54.
northern Scotland tomorrow. There is a lot of cloud coming in from the | :07:55. | :07:58.
North Sea which is pushing its way inland. There could be quite a bit | :07:59. | :08:05.
of fog around in the morning. It should be a mild, misty, murky start | :08:06. | :08:11.
to Wednesday. The mist and fog should lift quickly. The cloud | :08:12. | :08:15.
thinning and breaking. Sunny spells developing in many places. That | :08:16. | :08:20.
could trigger some or showers. Over the Pennines we could get some late | :08:21. | :08:24.
showers, and tricky for the evening rush | :08:25. | :08:25. |
