A multi`million pound recycling plant has opened in Surrey

which will use tonnes of food waste to generate power

for thousands of homes across south London and Surrey.

But one charity fears that the facility will discouragd

supermarkets and shops from giving away left over produce

Every year in London it is dstimated nearly 1 million tonnes of hs thrown

away. But here in Chelsea, they pride themselves in low waist. This

machine has saved them thousands. It was one of the key factors we wanted

to involve in our business, how we would produce the waist. Many are

not as conscientious and thhs is where some food waste ends tp at

this digester implant in Surrey Instead of sending it to landfill,

food waste is converted into gas and fertiliser. This is mainly food

waste from recycling bins. There is a lot of plastic in there. @ huge

plastic mountain. The company has two strip out these contaminants.

Water bottles, toothpaste ttbes are getting into the recycling. Not

everyone is so keen on this new emerging industry. This charity

things businesses like supermarkets are being paid too much to send

edible food away to be turndd two energy. The point we are making as

a higher priority than that, when that food is fit for human

consumption is to get it to people in need. Others say we should be

reducing waste. Less is the message. You will save yourself monex and

protect the environment. Thhs plant is only the second in the

south`east. The energy generated power is 4000 homes. The industry

says the subsidies are fair. There is little food that come here these

days that is genuine waste `nd could be eaten. The government sahd

surplus food should be conshdered for human consumption first before

energy. More of these plants are planned which will mean mord

arguments over who does what with the capital's waist.

weighed up with how long it is open for. It would seem like a good idea.

But I do drive in London as well. If I am coming this way in the car it

might be difficult. An absolute nightmare. Puts pressure on the

other roads. The hope is to create a new commercial, academic water per

will start next week. Around 60 Chinese companies have

said they plan to set up their European headquarters at

a new business park in Docklands. It means around a fifth
