Don't forget Newsnight's st`rting over on BBC Two in a moment. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Now, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:18.
Good evening, Welcome to BBC London News with me, Alex Btshill. | :00:19. | :00:21.
There are warnings tonight that London is facing a serious shortage | :00:22. | :00:23.
Half of all teacher training places in | :00:24. | :00:26.
It comes at a time when thotsands of extra teachers are needed to | :00:27. | :00:31.
cope with growing pupil numbers in the capital. | :00:32. | :00:33.
Here's our education reportdr, Marc Ashdown. | :00:34. | :00:41.
Last minute prep before terl starts. Beth and will be teaching m`ths in | :00:42. | :00:48.
Hackney. Telling people she is taking to the classroom is not | :00:49. | :00:53.
always easy. Teaching in London you get a few sharp looks. Especially | :00:54. | :01:02.
maths. People tend to share horrific stories from their own educ`tion | :01:03. | :01:06.
that seem really scarring. She is excited by the challenge th`t others | :01:07. | :01:11.
are not. Latest information shows potentially large gaps in some | :01:12. | :01:17.
subjects. 126 courses are on offer in London and nearly half h`ve | :01:18. | :01:20.
unfilled spaces. In London `nd nearly half have unfilled spaces. | :01:21. | :01:26.
Inside, chemistry and physics. Out of the 49 specialist language | :01:27. | :01:30.
courses on offer, 24 are currently not fall. All of this matters | :01:31. | :01:43.
because we know London needs to find 130,000 extra school places by 018. | :01:44. | :01:45.
With one teacher per 30 puphls that works out at 4400 extra teachers who | :01:46. | :01:50.
need to be found. The popul`tion in London will grow dramatically over | :01:51. | :01:54.
the next years. We have to lake sure we are training in of teachdrs. As | :01:55. | :01:58.
soon as we get into a spiral where we are not training enough teachers, | :01:59. | :02:02.
there is a risk that standards go down. What we have at present, if | :02:03. | :02:07.
you think about traffic lights which are not at red but they are clearly | :02:08. | :02:12.
flashing amber. The Governmdnt trains graduates and career changes | :02:13. | :02:18.
through its direct scheme. This map shows how money places have been | :02:19. | :02:24.
allocated this year. The ardas in right have `` White have between | :02:25. | :02:31.
zero and 19 trainees. Thous`nds of new recruits attended boot camp in | :02:32. | :02:35.
Leeds over the summer, 600 heading to London, despite the challenges of | :02:36. | :02:39.
teaching him. The way that teachers are viewed in this country, we need | :02:40. | :02:43.
to change that. I do not thhnk teachers are valued. We get a lower | :02:44. | :02:49.
salary than people who go into accountancy and banking. Inhtially | :02:50. | :02:54.
it is with London and housing being so expensive. The numbers do not add | :02:55. | :02:58.
up. Next week the garment is launching this. A wide ranghng | :02:59. | :03:07.
recruitment campaign, buildhng on the impact of Educating Yorkshire. | :03:08. | :03:10.
The new Education Secretary is confident she can attract enough | :03:11. | :03:15.
teachers to cope. Want as m`ny high`quality graduates to go into | :03:16. | :03:18.
the teaching profession. We are offering bursaries for some of the | :03:19. | :03:22.
key subjects which we want to focus on, such as science and maths. | :03:23. | :03:25.
Whatever it is hoped that Nhcky Morgan will improve relations. In | :03:26. | :03:32.
London, the lack of teachers is fast becoming a classroom crisis. | :03:33. | :03:36.
Wormwood Scrubs prison has been described as filthy and uns`fe | :03:37. | :03:39.
Nearly half of inmates said they felt a risk during their tile | :03:40. | :03:42.
In the last three years, six prisoners have taken | :03:43. | :03:46.
Our home affairs corresponddnt, Guy Smith, reports. | :03:47. | :03:55.
Wormwood Scrubs, made famous by film`makers. Now under the spotlight | :03:56. | :04:04.
again. For its safety record and failing to implement repeatdd | :04:05. | :04:05.
recommendations concerning suicide and self harm. Since the last | :04:06. | :04:12.
inspection in 2011, six prisoners here have taken their own lhves and | :04:13. | :04:21.
the chief inspector 's report says work to reduce violence has been | :04:22. | :04:28.
poorly resourced and too lilited. Migel in west London holds 0300 | :04:29. | :04:37.
adult prisoners, many on reland Its last inspection found it was | :04:38. | :04:41.
improving. The prison watchdog has said today's report was verx | :04:42. | :04:47.
disappointing. When we inspdcted, we discovered that not only had this | :04:48. | :04:50.
number of prisoners taken their own lives, the responses and | :04:51. | :04:54.
recommendations that intervhewed had not been actioned. We found some | :04:55. | :04:58.
prisoners who were at risk of self harm in some pretty terribld | :04:59. | :05:02.
conditions. One serving prison officer says there is daily violence | :05:03. | :05:07.
and the jail is understaffed. We have disguised his identity. There | :05:08. | :05:16.
are more attacks on staff than there have ever been. There are more | :05:17. | :05:18.
fights between prisoners as well. Any level of violence is | :05:19. | :05:22.
unacceptable. That view is dchoed by a former burglar and ex`inm`te of | :05:23. | :05:28.
Wormwood Scrubs. He says it cannot cope with the most vulnerable. | :05:29. | :05:31.
People say these prisons ard like holiday camps. When did the last | :05:32. | :05:36.
person commits suicide in a holiday camp? What are we doing to these | :05:37. | :05:44.
people? What are they doing? They are getting more and more rdsentful. | :05:45. | :05:47.
Rather than trying to work with them. Angela routinely visited | :05:48. | :05:54.
Wormwood Scrubs as chair of the Independent monitoring board. She | :05:55. | :05:59.
resigned last year. From 2001 it got worse. In 2013, I said the prison | :06:00. | :06:04.
was on a knife edge. They ddnied it and said what we were seeing and | :06:05. | :06:10.
hearing was absolutely not true The Prison Service says Wormwood Scrubs | :06:11. | :06:13.
has been to a difficult change process. As the chief inspector | :06:14. | :06:18.
acknowledges, the governor has taken decisive action to address the | :06:19. | :06:23.
situation. Safety has been prioritised, supportive honourable | :06:24. | :06:26.
prisoners has been signific`ntly improved. The report raises serious | :06:27. | :06:30.
concerns about whether this prisoners doing its job, helping | :06:31. | :06:34.
rehabilitate criminals so that they are one day save to be rele`sed | :06:35. | :06:38.
So, I'll say goodbye and hand you over | :06:39. | :06:42.
It will feel warm tomorrow. I cannot promise it will be sunny all day. We | :06:43. | :06:59.
have the cloud in fading from the East tonight. It will be a dry | :07:00. | :07:03.
night. It might turn mystiqte in places. It will not be cold either. | :07:04. | :07:20.
Temperatures the cloud will thin and rake. Tim Bridges will get to 2 | :07:21. | :07:32.
degrees, possibly 24 Celsius. `` temperatures will get. We c`nnot | :07:33. | :07:34.
promise sunny skies for the temperatures will get. We cannot | :07:35. | :07:43.
promise sunny skies for the weekend. Quite a nice day for many of us | :07:44. | :07:47.
Good evening. Some sunshine around to end the day in the south and | :07:48. | :07:52.
south-east of the country. Tomorrow, another fine day. By fine I mean | :07:53. | :07:56.
skies looking something like this. I suspect there will be a little bit | :07:57. | :08:00.
of cloud at some point in the day. The weather is very settled. An | :08:01. | :08:05.
enormous area of high pressure stretching from Russia across | :08:06. | :08:08.
Central Europe and into our neighbourhood here. This is a | :08:09. | :08:12.
satellite picture from today you can see sunny skies across parts of East | :08:13. | :08:15.
Anglia and the Sabbath. More cloud the further north you are. Even here | :08:16. | :08:20.
the skies have broken up. -- the south-east. Through tonight, all we | :08:21. | :08:28.
will be seeing his errors of cloud floating around. In the countryside, | :08:29. | :08:33.
it could be quite chilly. In towns and cities, more like their, 14 | :08:34. | :08:38.
degrees. Tomorrow will start off quite cloudy. For a number of us | :08:39. | :08:40.
across | :08:41. | :08:42. |
