Could her missing iPhone hold vital clues in the search for Alice Gross?

:00:09.:00:13.

The missing teenager was last seen near her home

:00:14.:00:15.

It is unique, it has a cracked rear casing and she had coloured them in

with felt tip pen. Anyone who has that will know they have her phone.

We'll have the latest on the investigation.

all, they want her white iPhone with a cracked case. She had decorated it

:02:30.:02:34.

with pens to hide the damagd. It went off`line at 5pm and has not

:02:35.:02:39.

been switched on since. Anyone who has that will know now hopefully

they have Alice's phone. Yot are not in trouble if you took it ott of the

Alice texted her father, asking if he would be home because shd did not

would be back by 6pm. It suggests she intended to return home that

evening. Police found her rtcksack last week in undergrowth, containing

:03:13.:03:17.

her shoes. They believe she may have been shopping, and was wearhng a new

:03:44.:03:54.

us. Alice's missing mobile phone is key to the investigation. Absolutely

:03:55.:03:59.

key. We are desperate to locate it, recover it. We believe wherd it was

:04:00.:04:03.

sound is important to understanding what happened to Alice. The

:04:04.:04:06.

information on it will expl`in what you may have been doing and who she

:04:07.:04:09.

may have been speaking to an Internet as she went on her walk. We

:04:10.:04:14.

know you are desperate for information. Can you help jog

:04:15.:04:17.

anyone's memory by telling ts her last known movements and whdre she

:04:18.:04:23.

was? She left home at 1pm. We know she walked down the Grand Union

:04:24.:04:27.

canal tow path as far as thd Brentford and Kew area. We're not

:04:28.:04:31.

sure what she did. We would like to know if anyone saw her in the shops,

:04:32.:04:36.

buying anything or if anyond saw her buying shoes particularly. We know

:04:37.:04:40.

she retraced her route and her last known sighting was at 4:26pl, at the

:04:41.:04:46.

Bridge Alge Crumpler's way. The time is key. You are still hoping that

:04:47.:04:50.

the cyclists she walked past at that time will come forward? Indded, we

:04:51.:04:56.

have released images of those individuals already. There `re at

:04:57.:04:59.

least five cyclists who would have passed Alice before she reached the

:05:00.:05:02.

bridge and would have seen her walking past them. We desperately

:05:03.:05:15.

need to identify those individuals and speak to them. You menthoned the

:05:16.:05:18.

rucksack which was founded undergrowth, containing shods. How

:05:19.:05:19.

significant is that? Hugely significant but I want to understand

:05:20.:05:22.

the context, why it is wherd it is. We know it was handled a dax later

:05:23.:05:25.

by some builders who came forward and provided statement and have been

:05:26.:05:27.

eliminated from enquiries. But if they moved it, did anyone else? I

:05:28.:05:32.

need to speak to anyone who saw that bag on the tow path or near it.

:05:33.:05:35.

Please come forward. Thank xou for joining us. Of course, our heart

:05:36.:05:42.

goes out to Alice's family `nd friends.

:05:43.:05:44.

And if members of the public have any information

:05:45.:05:47.

which could help police with Alice's whereabouts, they are being asked to

:05:48.:05:50.

call the incident room on 0208 358 0100, or dial the

:05:51.:05:56.

As Scotland considers its ftture, we look at whether London could also

:05:57.:06:09.

An investigation is underwax into "safeguarding concerns"

:06:10.:06:20.

at an award`winning primary school in north London, after

:06:21.:06:23.

BBC London understands as m`ny as 18 past and present staff at Gdorge

:06:24.:06:30.

Eliot Primary in St John's Wood have given evidence as witnesses.

:06:31.:06:34.

An interim head is now runnhng the school ` which last year was

:06:35.:06:38.

Here's our education reportdr, Marc Ashdown.

:06:39.:06:46.

George Eliot primary school has a chequered past. Not long ago, a

:06:47.:06:53.

badly failing school but now rated outstanding. Last year, The Times

:06:54.:06:56.

educational supplement named it best primary school in the country. Many

:06:57.:07:01.

credit the headteacher with this remarkable turnaround. Therd was

:07:02.:07:03.

shock when Beatrix Simpson recently disappeared from school without

:07:04.:07:08.

explanation. All we know at this stage is that an independent

:07:09.:07:11.

investigation is underway. We are being told it relates to

:07:12.:07:14.

safeguarding concerns, though nothing of a sexual nature. The

:07:15.:07:18.

National union of teachers told us about 18 of their members, staff

:07:19.:07:23.

past and present, have come forward and giving evidence. Safegu`rding is

:07:24.:07:27.

a broad term, covering a range of things. Schools have a duty to keep

:07:28.:07:37.

children from harm, abuse and maltreatment, and give them safe and

:07:38.:07:39.

effective care. It would be improper for us to go into the detail of the

:07:40.:07:42.

concerns expressed here but I am sure parents and indeed staff will

:07:43.:07:44.

want this matter thoroughly investigated and resolved as soon as

:07:45.:07:47.

possible. The school is run by Westminster Council and has 450

:07:48.:07:52.

pupils. Outside today, parents were, on the whole, in the dark. We would

:07:53.:07:57.

like to know what's going on. Worried? Not much. I have confidence

:07:58.:08:03.

in the school. If it was solething serious, they would address the

:08:04.:08:08.

parents, let us know. I don't think I'm worrying. I think some parents

:08:09.:08:12.

were worrying, but I think ht was overdone. The interim head has

:08:13.:08:15.

written to parents, ushering them children are safe and securd and

:08:16.:08:20.

asking for patients. `` asstring them. Westminster Council s`y they

:08:21.:08:24.

take any issues at a school seriously and said, "a skilled and

:08:25.:08:28.

very experienced interim he`d is in place and the important thing is

:08:29.:08:30.

that teachers are supported in their work and children continue to

:08:31.:08:34.

learn". We tried to contact the chair of governors and Beatrix

:08:35.:08:37.

Simpson but have so far been unable to reach them for comment. The

:08:38.:08:41.

priority for the independent investigation will be getting clear

:08:42.:08:45.

answers the parents, soon. `` for parents.

:08:46.:08:47.

More than 1,000 stolen mobile phones have been seized in a series

:08:48.:08:50.

The operation led by British Transport Police is targeting gangs

:08:51.:08:53.

responsible for buying and exporting large quantithes

:08:54.:08:55.

of smartphones ` largely stolen from Tube and bus passengers.

:08:56.:08:58.

This report from Emilia Pap`dopoulos does contain some flashing hmages.

:08:59.:09:07.

A year`long investigation comes down to this. Hello? It is the police,

:09:08.:09:17.

can you open up? Dawn raids across the capital, cracking down on the

:09:18.:09:19.

criminal gangs who has made a fortune selling smartphones stolen

:09:20.:09:25.

from London commuters. At this property in Northolt, three men are

:09:26.:09:29.

arrested for handling stolen goods and money laundering. At thdse

:09:30.:09:32.

luxury apartments in Brentford, one man, thought to be the group

:09:33.:09:37.

ringleader, is taken into ctstody. In the boot of his car, mord than

:09:38.:09:42.

200 smartphones, with an estimated value of ?60,000. And not f`r down

:09:43.:09:48.

the road at this storage warehouse, more phones. This is one of the

:09:49.:09:53.

three storage units being sdarched today. As you can see, officers have

:09:54.:09:58.

aurally seized hundreds of suspected stolen mobile phones and ovdr

:09:59.:10:02.

?10,000 in cash. The British Transport Police believe th`t many

:10:03.:10:05.

of these smartphones could have been stolen from passengers on London

:10:06.:10:10.

transport, and then brought here, repackaged and sold abroad. This

:10:11.:10:13.

organised network fuels the petty theft taking place on a daily basis

:10:14.:10:17.

on the rail network. Taking out a gang like this will make a

:10:18.:10:23.

significant impact. Smartphones make big money and are big busindss.

:10:24.:10:29.

Police believe the group by them from pickpockets, and sell them on.

:10:30.:10:35.

Sometimes pickpockets are dhrectly to mobile phone shops. It is all the

:10:36.:10:38.

phones are mostly sent Eastdrn Europe, to mobile phone shops. It is

:10:39.:10:40.

all the phones are mostly sdnt Eastern Europe, Dubai and North

:10:41.:10:43.

Africa where they can be sold for almost double the UK value. This

:10:44.:10:45.

footage filmed by BBC London earlier this year shows 1`shot agreding to

:10:46.:10:49.

buy a stolen mobile phone. `` one shop.

:10:50.:10:54.

Last year, there were 5000 deaths reported on London Undergrotnd. More

:10:55.:11:00.

than half of those were mobhle phones. This morning's raids saw 13

:11:01.:11:06.

people arrested and more th`n 1 00 phones seized. The British Transport

:11:07.:11:09.

Police hope that by dismantling these criminal networks frol the

:11:10.:11:12.

top, they can make travelling in the capital safer.

:11:13.:11:16.

Southeastern Trains has prolised extra seats and to improve

:11:17.:11:19.

connections, after the government said it could continue runnhng

:11:20.:11:21.

The Rail Minister admitted the company hadn't always ghven

:11:22.:11:25.

passengers "the service that they deserve"

:11:26.:11:28.

but said that improving the current franchise provided better v`lue for

:11:29.:11:32.

As we have been hearing, nulber of financial institutions have said

:11:33.:11:45.

they would move offices London if Scotland voter independence. But

:11:46.:11:50.

what would an independent Scotland vote for the capital `` means the

:11:51.:11:55.

capital? Nick Beake has tridd to find out.

:11:56.:11:57.

Next week, Londoners will not have a say in the vote but the outcome

:11:58.:12:03.

could have a big impact on our city. Potentially on the financial system.

:12:04.:12:06.

There has been a argument about what will happen with cultural thes,

:12:07.:12:10.

historic ties but there is now a renewed focus on the City of London.

:12:11.:12:15.

I have spent the day looking at how the political drama north of the

:12:16.:12:20.

border is affecting us down here. What? Christ did, didn't I?

:12:21.:12:28.

Unbelievable. It's Scotland not exist before the union? A political

:12:29.:12:33.

drama, being played out in dast London, which could soon become

:12:34.:12:38.

reality. It is the rebirth of a sovereign nation, OK? Are wd clear

:12:39.:12:45.

on that? Of course, Minister. Fiona is the new Foreign Secretarx in a

:12:46.:12:49.

newly independent Scotland. Here it is a great, fun way of lookhng at

:12:50.:12:53.

it, and it is balanced, I think for both sides. Chatting with a lot of

:12:54.:12:58.

the audience after the show in the theatre bar and stuff, it is clear

:12:59.:13:02.

that they are starting to w`ke up and smell the Coffey and engage with

:13:03.:13:06.

some of the issues in the show. These London landmarks may be

:13:07.:13:10.

hundreds of miles from Edinburgh and Glasgow, but now the capital seems

:13:11.:13:15.

to be taking on greater significance in the referendum. For example, RBS

:13:16.:13:18.

said today it would move its registered headquarters to London if

:13:19.:13:23.

Scotland were to break away. But more significant in the short term

:13:24.:13:28.

has been the effect on the City of London, of an apparent swell of Port

:13:29.:13:33.

for independence. That mattdrs for everyone because the fortund of the

:13:34.:13:37.

city affects things like pensions and savings. `` swell of support. We

:13:38.:13:42.

saw the pound fall about 2% against the dollar over the course of the

:13:43.:13:47.

weekend. I think Londoners should be trusted, particularly in relation to

:13:48.:13:51.

their mortgage rate and property prices and of course, any

:13:52.:13:54.

uncertainty in relation to the borrowing costs the UK might have on

:13:55.:13:57.

the back of the independencd vote being carried will filter its way

:13:58.:14:02.

down to the real economy. That could impact the pocket of all Londoners.

:14:03.:14:06.

Away from money, if Scotland were to gain independence, should London

:14:07.:14:11.

gain more powers, too? Maybd even become a citystate like Singapore or

:14:12.:14:17.

Monaco. We should have more ability to raise locally the taxes we spend

:14:18.:14:22.

locally. That is basically democratic policy. I am tot`lly in

:14:23.:14:26.

favour of it. I am not in f`vour of London being a new citystatd, carved

:14:27.:14:30.

out from the rest of the cotntry. London is the capital of England,

:14:31.:14:34.

Britain and the UK. That is the way it has got to be. Whether or not

:14:35.:14:38.

Scotland remains in that Unhted Kingdom is a decision out of

:14:39.:14:43.

London's reach. That has not stopped London's

:14:44.:14:46.

politicians travelling to Scotland to try to influence the outcome In

:14:47.:14:51.

a week's time, we will know just how we, London, fit in the new big

:14:52.:14:55.

picture. Thank you for joining us.

:14:56.:14:57.

London is running out of burial space ` that's according to a group

:14:58.:15:01.

At the City of London cemetdry, they believe they've come up with

:15:02.:15:06.

one answer ` where recycling is freeing up thousands

:15:07.:15:08.

The graves are all around the same kind of time. At the City of London

:15:09.:15:20.

Cemetery, many of the graves are over 100 years old. With sp`ce

:15:21.:15:24.

running out, Gary, who runs the site, says recycling is the only

:15:25.:15:28.

sensible option. If we don't reuse cemetery space, we have to look for

:15:29.:15:34.

new space. That means new l`nd that could have been used for pl`nning,

:15:35.:15:38.

recreation and lots of other things. Reusing a cemetery, breathing new

:15:39.:15:43.

life into an old cemetery is the way forward. Even graves that h`ve

:15:44.:15:47.

fallen into disrepair like this one are not automatically reclahmed

:15:48.:15:52.

Firstly, a notices put in the local press, and signs go up in the

:15:53.:15:55.

graveyard, listing all the plots that the cemetery wants to reclaim.

:15:56.:15:59.

Then living relatives and other interested parties have abott six

:16:00.:16:02.

months to make their objecthons known. Now MPs are considerhng

:16:03.:16:08.

adopting this system across London. They accept in parts of the capital,

:16:09.:16:14.

burial spaces are running ott. I am meeting leaders over the next few

:16:15.:16:18.

weeks to hear what they think the problems are in their areas. In

:16:19.:16:22.

London, it is clear that sole local authorities have no council space

:16:23.:16:27.

left for burial. New legisl`tion in 2007 made it possible not jtst a

:16:28.:16:32.

reuse burial plots over 75 xears old but to disturb the existing remains,

:16:33.:16:36.

making it possible to lay to rest many more people in these graves. I

:16:37.:16:41.

have found out no one is ushng it. I asked the Minister Hamley pdople had

:16:42.:16:45.

sought permission and none came forward. I asked how many graves had

:16:46.:16:49.

been created as a result of the legislation and he confirmed that

:16:50.:16:54.

none have been. 25% of people in London still want to be burhed. With

:16:55.:16:59.

the population of the capit`l continuing to rise, recycling graves

:17:00.:17:02.

is likely to play a bigger part in the solution.

:17:03.:17:20.

general sale tomorrow. They cost up to ?1500. We will be telling you how

:17:21.:17:25.

you can get them and this lot will be telling us if they can afford

:17:26.:17:26.

them. After news yesterday that ddlays and

:17:27.:17:33.

legal wranglings are going to force Tottenham Hotspur to move ott of

:17:34.:17:36.

their current ground for a season while they build a new stadhum,

:17:37.:17:39.

today it's had to deny reports that the club is up for sale. Tarah Welsh

:17:40.:17:43.

is at White Hart Lane. Concdrn from supporters about all this

:17:44.:17:46.

uncertainly? Well, Tottenham Hotspur supporters

:17:47.:18:01.

trust fears that the club's identity is at risk. That is because the club

:18:02.:18:04.

has confirmed it will have to move out of White Hart Lane for ` whole

:18:05.:18:08.

season while the stadium is constructive. The plan was

:18:09.:18:12.

originally to build the new stadium slowly as games continued to be

:18:13.:18:16.

played at the old ground next door, but that has all changed. E`rlier

:18:17.:18:20.

this summer, a compulsory ptrchase order for the land was approved

:18:21.:18:29.

which took longer than intended and that is now being challenged in the

:18:30.:18:33.

High Court by owners of the land. That means when building work can

:18:34.:18:37.

begin, it will need to be done more quickly, which means moving out of

:18:38.:18:40.

here. There is no time framd for this but there has been speculation

:18:41.:18:45.

over where Spurs will be pl`ying games. Wembley could be used for the

:18:46.:18:49.

bigger games. It certainly has the capacity but it is more than 12

:18:50.:18:53.

miles away from here. Olymphc Stadium is just six miles away, but

:18:54.:19:05.

that would mean sharing with rivals West Ham. Then there is stadium MK,

:19:06.:19:08.

home to the MK Dons, which only holds 30,000, is nearly 50 liles

:19:09.:19:11.

away, and out of London. None of the options that appealing, one fan

:19:12.:19:16.

website writer. He London f`cility would be great, but it looks like

:19:17.:19:20.

the number of games they can play in a season would be a problem because

:19:21.:19:25.

Spurs would need 19 games bx whole season to play there. Staditm MK I

:19:26.:19:30.

have seen being talked about. It is not a dissimilar capacity to White

:19:31.:19:34.

Hart Lane but it is 50 miles outside London. No locations have bden

:19:35.:19:41.

confirmed by the club and they say they are looking at alternatives but

:19:42.:19:44.

it is pretty clear that the stadium will not be ready for 2017 `s
