Lancashire. The cottage pies have been withdrawn from kitchens.

:00:13.:00:17.

Officials say the amount eaten will have been minute.

In the last few minutes, Whitbread says horsemeat has been found in

:00:24.:00:29.

burgers and lasagne. We will have all the latest developments on this

:00:29.:00:33.

from our correspondents. Accused of murder, Oscar Pistorius

:00:33.:00:39.

weeps in court as he is charged with killing his girlfriend.

:01:21.:01:31.
:01:31.:01:47.

Good afternoon. Welcome to the BBC News at One. In the last hour, it's

:01:47.:01:51.

been confirmed that meat in school dinners in Lancashire has tested

:01:51.:01:56.

positive for horse DNA. Cottage pie, which was delivered to 47 schools

:01:56.:02:00.

in the county, has now been withdrawn from school kitchens.

:02:00.:02:05.

Lancashire County Council says the amount of horsemeat eaten will have

:02:05.:02:09.

been minute. All head teachers in the county have been alerted. And

:02:09.:02:14.

the Whitbread chain, which supplies food to thousands of pubs, has just

:02:14.:02:18.

revealed that horse DNA has been discovered in some of its meat

:02:18.:02:23.

products. It's also been confirmed that horse DNA has been detected in

:02:23.:02:28.

burgers sold by the Compass group in Ireland. All the latest

:02:28.:02:30.

developments come from our correspondent.

:02:30.:02:35.

This scandal has moved from supermarkets to schools. Within the

:02:35.:02:40.

last hour, samples of cottage pie supplied to schools in Lancashire

:02:40.:02:45.

have been found to contain horse DNA. The council says the amount

:02:45.:02:48.

consumed by children will be minute and the food has been withdrawn

:02:49.:02:53.

from the kitchens. The pub supplier Whitbread has said horsemeat has

:02:53.:02:59.

been found in two of its products. At labs around the country,

:02:59.:03:02.

hundreds of food samples are being tested. Scientists are trying to

:03:02.:03:08.

find out how far the horsemeat contamination has spread.

:03:08.:03:11.

Supermarkets have been removing some meat products from the shelves,

:03:11.:03:15.

but they have been criticised by Downing Street for not doing enough

:03:15.:03:19.

to reassure their customers. Nothing is more important to us...

:03:19.:03:22.

This morning, the boss of one appeared online rather than in

:03:23.:03:28.

front of the media and add cressed his customers directly. We take the

:03:28.:03:32.

trust you place in us very seriously. We work every day to

:03:32.:03:38.

make sure you can and we will continue to work every day.

:03:38.:03:40.

supermarkets know this scandal is damaging them. Some of them have

:03:40.:03:48.

published a letter saying they share their customers' outrage.

:03:48.:03:52.

There are problems when you put all your trust in a multi-national

:03:52.:03:55.

company whose profits come before people. We need to relocallise our

:03:55.:04:00.

food chain so we have local, small- scale farmers selling their produce

:04:00.:04:04.

with local slaughter houses and local butchers. ASDA is the latest

:04:04.:04:10.

of the big chains to take action after horse DNA was found in a

:04:10.:04:13.

bolognese sauce. It is the first time that fresh rather than frozen

:04:13.:04:17.

meat has been found to be contaminated. This is the plant in

:04:17.:04:22.

Bristol which is thought to have supplied ASDA. Shoppers say it is

:04:22.:04:26.

taking too long to get to the bottom of the scandal. We look

:04:26.:04:32.

twice and are avoiding places which we think will have it. Keep away

:04:32.:04:42.
:04:42.:04:42.

from the frozen meals. Prepare everything yourself. This is a

:04:42.:04:49.

European crisis. According to the French, 13 countries and 28

:04:49.:04:54.

companies could be affected. TRANSLATION: To the British

:04:54.:04:58.

consumers, even though I want to repeat, we are innocent, we are

:04:58.:05:02.

victims, we are not guilty. To them, I want to apologise. I'm very sorry.

:05:02.:05:08.

We never wanted this. Today's test results will give a

:05:08.:05:12.

snapshot of the spread of contaminated meat but not the full

:05:12.:05:16.

picture. It may take several months before we know how all this started

:05:16.:05:23.

and who is to blame. Let's get the latest from Andy Gill

:05:23.:05:28.

who is in Salford. In terms of horsemeat getting into schools now,

:05:28.:05:32.

the products have been withdrawn, but we don't know how much

:05:32.:05:37.

horsemeat might have been eaten or for how long? This came about

:05:37.:05:40.

because Lancashire Council is one of seven local authorities which

:05:40.:05:44.

has its own laboratories to test food. It was testing products

:05:44.:05:48.

already implicated in the horsemeat scandal on behalf of the Food

:05:48.:05:51.

Standards Agency. The council took an independent decision to test its

:05:52.:05:57.

own food that was supplied to its schools. It's confirmed cottage pie

:05:57.:06:02.

sent to 47 schools does have horse DNA in it. The council has also

:06:02.:06:07.

said that any DNA which children may have consumed will have been in

:06:07.:06:11.

minute quantities. The head teachers of all these 47 schools

:06:11.:06:15.

have already been alerted about this. Now, the council website says

:06:15.:06:22.

they supply 55,000 meals to schools across the county during a week.

:06:22.:06:30.

They say that most of the meat is fresh-farm assured from the Fylde

:06:30.:06:36.

coast. They have not been able to tell us who has supplied the

:06:36.:06:41.

cottage pie with the horse DNA for the schools in Lancashire. Thank

:06:41.:06:44.

you, for now. Of course, it is not just this

:06:44.:06:48.

country that's affected by contaminated meat products. 16

:06:48.:06:51.

European countries are dealing with the problem and today in Brussels

:06:51.:06:54.

food safety officials from throughout the EU are meeting to

:06:54.:06:59.

discuss the situation. Let's get the latest from Matthew Price. In

:06:59.:07:03.

fact, I think the meeting might still be going on. What are you

:07:03.:07:09.

hearing there? It is, Jane. I think what they want to do here in

:07:09.:07:13.

Brussels, as in Britain, is to try and get the clearest possible

:07:13.:07:17.

picture of exactly the size and scope of this problem. We do not

:07:17.:07:21.

have a very clear picture at the moment. All that we do know is that

:07:21.:07:25.

it is widespread and it's not just confined to Britain. It is across

:07:25.:07:28.

the EU, it would seem. At that meeting, experts who regularly meet

:07:28.:07:32.

on a monthly basis, they are in emergency sessions at the moment.

:07:32.:07:37.

They are trying to work out the best method for conducting new,

:07:37.:07:42.

quick tests to try and ascertain how much of the food chain in

:07:42.:07:48.

Europe has been affected. Two tests they will be conducting, randomly,

:07:48.:07:53.

across the European Union, in every country of the EU, two tests - one

:07:53.:07:57.

to look for the presence of horse DNA in beef products; the other to

:07:57.:08:02.

look for the presence of the horse painkiller bute in the food chain

:08:02.:08:05.

as well. They are not going to be able to conduct those tests that

:08:05.:08:09.

quickly and get the results that quickly. We are not expecting them

:08:09.:08:15.

to start until March. When they do start, we are not expecting results

:08:16.:08:18.

until mid-April. Only then will we get a clear picture of the extent

:08:18.:08:23.

of this problem. It is clear already that the problem is

:08:23.:08:26.

widespread. Thank you. We will talk more about

:08:26.:08:31.

this story later in the programme. The South African Paralympic

:08:31.:08:34.

Champion, Oscar Pistorius, has appeared in court in Pretoria

:08:34.:08:37.

accused of the murder of his girlfriend. He broke down in tears

:08:37.:08:41.

as he was charged with shooting Reeva Steenkamp at his home

:08:41.:08:46.

yesterday. The prosecution will argue it was a premeditated murder.

:08:46.:08:51.

But his agent says he will be contesting the charge in the

:08:51.:08:57.

strongest possible terms. After a night in a police cell,

:08:57.:09:01.

Oscar Pistorius was driven to court in Pretoria this morning. His face

:09:01.:09:07.

and feelings well hidden for now. The courtroom was packed and very

:09:07.:09:11.

emotional. Oscar Pistorius walked in looking grim-faced but as soon

:09:11.:09:15.

as the prosecutor mentioned "premeditated murder" he broke down,

:09:15.:09:19.

sobbing, his head in his hands. The magistrate asked him if he wanted

:09:19.:09:25.

to sit down. He did so and barely moved for the next 45 minutes,

:09:25.:09:29.

occasionally breaking into more sobs. The man whose sporting

:09:29.:09:33.

achievements have dazzled the world broke down when it was suggested he

:09:33.:09:37.

deliberately killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Friends and family

:09:37.:09:43.

of the dead woman shot yesterday have continued to pay tribute to

:09:43.:09:50.

the former model. I must just say that her future has been cut short,

:09:50.:09:54.

all her dreams have been and what she has accomplished in the past.

:09:54.:10:03.

And the family at the moment are devastated. This case has shocked

:10:03.:10:07.

and bewildered South Africa, an iconic local hero transformed into

:10:07.:10:12.

a murder suspect. I'm so sad. He is my inspiration. I'm disappointed

:10:12.:10:18.

the way things have happened. would know if it was a burglar. In

:10:18.:10:23.

a high-security estate, there is no chance that it was a burglar.

:10:23.:10:27.

decision on whether Oscar Pistorius will be allowed out on bail has

:10:27.:10:31.

been postponed until next week. In the meantime, one of the world's

:10:31.:10:35.

most famous sporting stars will remain behind bars at a local

:10:36.:10:41.

police station. We can get the latest from Andrew

:10:41.:10:46.

now. Really quite chaotic scenes at one point in the court, a sense of

:10:46.:10:50.

the huge shock still within the country? Indeed, it was

:10:50.:10:53.

extraordinary to be in that courtroom. I was standing three

:10:53.:10:57.

yards from Oscar Pistorius and to watch his face and the reactions

:10:57.:11:07.

every time "murder" came up, he crumpled. He sat there as this very

:11:07.:11:11.

lonely figure. All of South Africa, people outside discussing this,

:11:11.:11:15.

wondering could this possibly have been some sort of accident, as

:11:15.:11:19.

Pistorius and his friends insist, or as the police are arguing, as

:11:19.:11:24.

they are building up their case now with forensics going to his house

:11:24.:11:28.

nearby, could this have been some sort of premeditated murder? We are

:11:28.:11:33.

hearing a lot of people now coming out of the woodwork, the mothers of

:11:33.:11:37.

ex-girlfriends saying he did have a violent streak, he often couldn't

:11:37.:11:42.

control that anger, perhaps he couldn't handle the fame, he had

:11:42.:11:46.

some sort of particular enthusiasm for guns. People are putting that

:11:46.:11:50.

altogether and basically this is still a mystery. A lot of people in

:11:50.:11:54.

South Africa starting to wonder whether the golden boy of sport,

:11:54.:12:00.

this local hero, may not prove to be quite such a hero after all.

:12:00.:12:04.

Thank you. Here, the Coronation Street actor

:12:04.:12:08.

Michael Le Vell has been charged with 19 sexual offences including

:12:08.:12:13.

raping a child. The actor, who plays Kevin Webster, is due to

:12:13.:12:15.

appear in court in Manchester at the end of this month. In a

:12:15.:12:21.

statement, he said he is innocent of all charges and will fight them

:12:21.:12:26.

vigorously. Michael Le Vell has played the part

:12:26.:12:36.
:12:36.:12:36.

of Kevin Webster for 30 years. Kevin John Webster... He is still

:12:36.:12:41.

one of the best-known faces on- screen, as one of the longest-

:12:41.:12:46.

serving cast members of Coronation Street. Today, there was no sign of

:12:46.:12:51.

the actor at his home. He was granted bail late last night after

:12:51.:12:55.

being charged with 19 sexual offences against a girl who is now

:12:55.:13:00.

in her late teens. Under his real name, he faces charges including

:13:00.:13:07.

the rape and indecent assault of a child between 2001 and 2010. The

:13:07.:13:12.

star was first arrested in 2011, in connection with alleged offences

:13:12.:13:16.

against the same child, but no charges were then brought. Now, the

:13:16.:13:20.

Crown Prosecution Service has reviewed the evidence. Alison

:13:20.:13:30.
:13:30.:13:44.

Having starred in the soap since 1983, the actor will not be

:13:44.:13:49.

involved in new scenes. Coronation Street has filmed here

:13:49.:13:55.

at the Granada Studios. Today, ITV have said that due to the serious

:13:55.:13:59.

nature of the charges against him, Michael Le Vell won't be appearing

:13:59.:14:03.

in the soap whilst legal proceedings are ongoing. Michael Le

:14:03.:14:11.

Vell will appear before magistrates on February 27th.

:14:11.:14:16.

More than 500 people were injured when a meteor shot across the sky

:14:16.:14:21.

in central Russia sending fireballs crashing to earth. Windows were

:14:21.:14:24.

blown out and buildings damaged. It is the first recorded meteor strike

:14:24.:14:34.
:14:34.:14:36.

of this kind for more than 100 The first thing people notice was a

:14:37.:14:40.

fireball flying through the sky, and dozens of video cameras

:14:40.:14:44.

captured the same event, what seems to have been a meteor burning up in

:14:44.:14:50.

the atmosphere, leaving behind it a white trail. TRANSLATION: Eyes on

:14:50.:14:54.

object moving through the sky, then there was a flash. -- I saw. Then

:14:54.:14:59.

we saw a trace as if from a rocket, followed by an explosion a couple

:14:59.:15:05.

of minutes later. The explosion was also caught on camera. It is not

:15:05.:15:10.

yet clear whether it was the meteor exploding in mid-air or hitting the

:15:10.:15:16.

ground. Either way, the shock wave from the blast knocked over walls

:15:16.:15:21.

and blowout windows. This factory in the Urals region suffered

:15:21.:15:25.

extensive damage. People who had rushed to look outside to see what

:15:25.:15:31.

was flying overhead were injured by glass when the windows smashed.

:15:31.:15:36.

Hundreds had to be treated for cuts to their heads and hands. Buildings

:15:36.:15:42.

across the region were evacuated. At one point, the mobile phone

:15:42.:15:45.

networks stop working because of the number of people trying to call

:15:45.:15:49.

friends and relatives. It appears that eyewitnesses all saw the same

:15:49.:15:53.

meteor, but that has not been established for sure, and it is not

:15:53.:15:57.

yet clear how many pieces of meteorite are now lying on the

:15:57.:16:01.

ground in the wilds of the Ural mountains, how many solid reminders

:16:02.:16:05.

there will be of the extraordinary object that fell to earth on a

:16:05.:16:15.
:16:15.:16:17.

Just to tell you we will be talking a little bit more about that meteor

:16:17.:16:21.

and an asteroid, indeed, that is heading for Earth, coming up a

:16:21.:16:25.

little later in the programme. That asteroid is due to pass within

:16:25.:16:29.

20,000 miles of us this evening. That is still to come. Just a

:16:29.:16:36.

reminder of our main story this lunchtime, horsemeat has been found

:16:36.:16:40.

in summer school dinners in Lancashire. And the Whitbread chain

:16:40.:16:44.

has found horsemeat in some of its meat products.

:16:44.:16:50.

He also still to come here, a gang which staged a cash for crash

:16:50.:16:56.

collision which killed a driver is being sentenced today.

:16:56.:16:59.

Later on BBC London, the flying doctors, London's air ambulance

:16:59.:17:03.

takes to the skies with a whole new look. And in sport we look ahead to

:17:03.:17:05.

this weekend's FA Cup action with Millwall once again in the

:17:05.:17:15.
:17:15.:17:23.

spotlight. Those stories plus a Our main story this lunchtime, the

:17:23.:17:28.

revelations that horsemeat has been found in school dinners sent to 47

:17:28.:17:32.

Lancashire schools and also, as we said, the huge Whitbread chain also

:17:33.:17:37.

finding horsemeat in a couple of its products. All of this, of

:17:37.:17:40.

course, as the Food Standards Agency prepares to release details

:17:40.:17:44.

of more testing, and we will probably get more results on those

:17:44.:17:49.

tests later today. Let's just assess the situation with medical

:17:49.:17:53.

correspondent Fergus Walsh. We get the sense that things are coming

:17:53.:17:57.

through, information is coming through all the time. What do you

:17:57.:18:05.

make of these developments? Well, obviously, the fact that we found

:18:05.:18:12.

horsemeat in two pub chains and in schools will be of concern, but the

:18:12.:18:16.

medical correspondent, this is not really a medical health issue. This

:18:16.:18:22.

is about mislabelling and a consumer deception issue. Although

:18:22.:18:26.

there are significant developments, I think we may find today, if we

:18:26.:18:31.

are to trust the rumours we are hearing, that the supermarkets will

:18:31.:18:37.

line up and say pretty much they have found none or very little

:18:37.:18:47.

other products with horsemeat in them. For example, the Co-op has

:18:47.:18:51.

said that nine out of 102, all negative, and we have heard from

:18:51.:18:55.

the British Retail Consortium that they are not expecting any of their

:18:55.:19:01.

13 members to reveal more or Smith products. So, obviously, worrying

:19:01.:19:04.

developments today, but in a sense the supermarkets will be hoping

:19:04.:19:09.

very much to draw a line under this, if they can say, well, we have not

:19:09.:19:13.

found any more. Thank you, Fergus Walsh, much more on that story over

:19:13.:19:18.

the course of the day. Four members of a gang who staged a

:19:18.:19:23.

cash for crash collision to result in the death of another driver are

:19:23.:19:26.

being sentenced today. They staged a crash on the A40 in

:19:26.:19:30.

Buckinghamshire which damaged the car of Baljinder Gill, who was then

:19:30.:19:34.

killed by another driver. Our correspondent Tom Symonds is

:19:35.:19:39.

following the case at Reading Crown Court.

:19:39.:19:45.

Yes, these crash for cash scams are increasingly worrying the police.

:19:45.:19:50.

They are staged by criminals so that they can claim personal

:19:50.:19:59.

accident compensation, but this one leads to a tragedy, and as a result

:19:59.:20:08.

a gang of men are facing long The last moments of liberty for the

:20:08.:20:11.

so called Crash For Cash Gang. They staged their collision not on a

:20:11.:20:16.

quiet road but on a dual- carriageway. They planned this

:20:16.:20:21.

quite carefully. Yes, this was an organised crime team who set out to

:20:21.:20:26.

cause a crash on the A40, using their mobile phones to planet. The

:20:26.:20:30.

car you see here pulled in front of the white car, also been driven by

:20:31.:20:35.

one of the members of the gang. The idea was that they would force the

:20:35.:20:38.

green van you see here to crash into the back of the white car when

:20:38.:20:43.

it stood on its brakes. The driver of the green van, recognising that

:20:43.:20:47.

something was afoot, manage to slow down enough to avoid crashing into

:20:47.:20:52.

the back of the white car. Unfortunately, Baljinder Gill,

:20:52.:20:56.

driving the silver car, did not stop in time and crashed into the

:20:56.:21:01.

back of the green van. Baljinder Gill got out of their car to check

:21:01.:21:05.

the damage, but the traffic was still moving. What happened next

:21:05.:21:09.

was witnessed by passengers on a passing coach. The horror of what

:21:09.:21:14.

they saw his evident in their reactions. As Baljinder Gill stood

:21:14.:21:19.

here dealing with her damaged car, another driver was coming up the

:21:19.:21:24.

motorway behind a fast. Colin Lee, in this van, did not see her. He

:21:24.:21:29.

slammed into the back of her car and she was killed instantly.

:21:29.:21:34.

difficulty with causing a crash at 70 mph on a major roads in and out

:21:34.:21:39.

of London towards the Midlands, it is unlikely that any criminal could

:21:39.:21:43.

Crash for cash incidents are a growing problem. It is estimated

:21:57.:22:01.

they cost nearly 400 million a year, pushing up insurance premiums

:22:01.:22:05.

for all motorists. One in seven injury claims are linked to the

:22:05.:22:10.

scams. Police are investigating 40 gangs, along with experts from the

insurance industry. Firstly, it increases the cost of insurance

each year. Secondly, with these accidents taking place, we are

:22:24.:22:27.

concerned that people will get injured, and indeed we have seen

:22:27.:22:32.

one fatality. And the officers that investigated this tragedy said it

proved one thing above all, that crash for cash is not a victimless

avalanche in the Highlands yesterday has died in hospital. Two

men and a woman were buried in snow in the Cairngorms. The area is

popular with hill-walkers and is home to three of Scotland's five

ski resorts. James Cook is in Aviemore. James.

:23:34.:23:37.

known as the Chalamain Gap, and for the RAF and for people here, this

The beauty of the mountains is what draws people here, and the

:23:45.:23:50.

challenge of heading off into the snow we Wildes, but for two groups

:23:50.:23:53.

Yesterday's venture into the hills ended in tragedy. The avalanche

:23:53.:23:57.

happened on the lower slopes, just a few miles from the Cairngorms ski

:23:57.:24:02.

centre. It was not an area thought to be high risk. Certainly not, and

:24:02.:24:06.

everybody who knows about this incident is quite shocked that it

:24:06.:24:11.

happened at this relatively low altitude. Within minutes of the

:24:11.:24:14.

avalanche, mountain rescuers were risking their lives and heading out

:24:14.:24:18.

to try to save others. Two helicopters were sent from RAF

:24:18.:24:23.

Lossiemouth. They picked up the three casualties, two men and a

:24:23.:24:28.

woman, and flew them to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but none survived.

:24:28.:24:32.

They were not the only people on the mountain yesterday. These two

:24:32.:24:35.

climbers spend the night in a snow hole before making it back safely

:24:35.:24:41.

this morning. You know there is a risk when you go up there. And you

:24:41.:24:47.

just have to be careful, check the snow, use your common sense. I mean,

:24:47.:24:53.

unfortunately, an avalanche can happen whenever. It is terrible,

:24:53.:24:56.

but again, you have just got to choose the right locations, plan

:24:56.:25:01.

ahead, check the weather, check the avalanche forecasts. Eight people

:25:01.:25:05.

have now died on Scottish mountains this year, seven in avalanches, but

:25:05.:25:09.

most climbers and rescuers in the Highlands should not and could not

:25:09.:25:18.

We will get more details of what happened from the police in a news

:25:18.:25:21.

conference this afternoon, but for now the Ministry of Defence says

:25:21.:25:24.

that his thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who died

:25:24.:25:28.

here. All right, thank you for now, James

:25:28.:25:32.

Cook there. A British backpacker missing in the

:25:32.:25:35.

Australian outback for more than three days has been found by

:25:35.:25:39.

rescuers. 18-year-old Sam Woodhead disappeared from a cattle station

in Queensland on Tuesday. Nick Rescued from a frightening Outback

ordeal, Sam Woodhead, the 18-year- old from London, seen here with his

:25:52.:25:56.

mother and sister at last year's Olympics, whose early evening jog

:25:56.:26:02.

on Tuesday evening became a three- day test of survival. In 40 degree

:26:02.:26:05.

heat of the outback, Australia's harshest terrain, the police had

:26:05.:26:09.

grave fears for his safety. So when the news reached his home in

:26:09.:26:13.

Richmond early this morning that he had been found, his father and

:26:13.:26:19.

sister were elated. Very, very sort of rugged terrain like that,

:26:19.:26:26.

anything could have happened, and I think Sam's fitness and interest in

:26:26.:26:33.

the outdoor world, if you like, has served him in good stead, thank

:26:33.:26:38.

you! And enabled him to last for quite a long time. He had set off

:26:38.:26:42.

from a remote sheep farm in Queensland where he had started

:26:42.:26:47.

working, 80 miles from the nearest town. But then he got lost and

:26:47.:26:50.

disorientated, and rather than making his way back to the farm, he

:26:50.:26:56.

kept moving further away. He was spotted by a rescue helicopter,

:26:56.:27:00.

sunburnt, dehydrated, suffering from cuts and abrasions, but

:27:01.:27:06.

otherwise he is in surprisingly good shape. A fitness fanatic and

:27:06.:27:11.

keen rugby player, he has been in Australia on a gap year before

:27:11.:27:14.

joining the armed forces. He had apparently been finding life on the

:27:14.:27:18.

remote farm a bit boring when he had gone looking for adventure.

:27:18.:27:28.
:27:28.:27:34.

Nick Bryant there are talking about, thankfully, the recovery of that he

and 18-year-old after three days in the outback. Now, as promised, we

:27:37.:27:41.

are going to talk about space matters. As we head earlier, 500

:27:41.:27:45.

people were injured in Russia when that meteorite shot across the sky

:27:45.:27:51.

there, and tonight an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool is

:27:51.:27:56.

going to be whistling past Earth, coming within about 20,000 miles of

:27:56.:28:00.

the surface. Let's assess the significance of these things, with

:28:01.:28:03.

me in the studio is Dr Marek Kukula from the Royal observatory

:28:03.:28:09.

Greenwich. Good afternoon to you. Now, people were injured, we do not

:28:09.:28:12.

want to downplay that, what happened in Russia, but in

:28:12.:28:17.

astronomical terms this is very unusual. It is unusual to see a

:28:17.:28:21.

fireball of this brightness and intensity, and to have such video

:28:21.:28:25.

footage, lots and lots of different clips of video is really unusual,

:28:25.:28:32.

fascinating scientific trochees. And if people find meteorites on

:28:32.:28:37.

the ground, that is presumably important for research. Absolutely,

:28:37.:28:41.

scientists who study meteorites will be very excited to get any

:28:41.:28:45.

solid pieces in their hands, so we have an idea of where it may have

:28:45.:28:49.

come from in the solar system. that is not enough for one day, we

:28:49.:28:55.

have an asteroid, are these two things linked? It could be a

:28:55.:28:59.

coincidence. There are lot of rocks at there, but maybe too much of a

:28:59.:29:02.

coincidence. Scientists will be looking at the trajectory of the

:29:02.:29:05.

Russian meteor to see if it is similar to the orbit of the

:29:05.:29:09.

asteroid. They will be able to compare the composition, but it

:29:10.:29:15.

could just be a cosmic coincidence. 20,000 miles, is that close? It is

:29:15.:29:19.

safe, and it is certainly not going to hit us, unlike the thing that

:29:19.:29:22.

exploded over Russia, but in astronomical terms it is closer

:29:22.:29:27.

than a lot of our satellites, it is within our cosmic territory. It is

:29:27.:29:31.

fascinating, thank you very much indeed, Dr Marek Kukula or from the

:29:31.:29:35.

Royal observatory in Greenwich. I wonder how clear these guys need to

:29:35.:29:43.

be to see any of that. Let's find A pretty decent chance of seeing

:29:43.:29:46.

the asteroid tonight, but you will need a pair of binoculars at the

:29:46.:29:51.

very least. It is a big beasts, 50 metres across, the size of an

:29:52.:29:55.

Olympic swimming pool, and in this Markup you can see how close it is

:29:55.:30:01.

going to get, 17,000 miles at its closest point. -- More Cup.

:30:01.:30:04.

Astronomically speaking, that is close. For example, it is a lot

:30:04.:30:08.

closer than the satellite which took this image of the clouds

:30:08.:30:12.

currently across the UK. There is a little bit of cloud here and there,

:30:12.:30:16.

but a fine afternoon for the majority, sunny spells lifting the

:30:16.:30:20.

temperatures to nine degrees. More cloud may spill into the southwest

:30:20.:30:23.

later this afternoon, but on the south coast we could reach double

:30:23.:30:28.

figures. Maybe not quite as warm as yesterday, but with lighter winds,

:30:28.:30:32.

feeling pleasant in the sunshine. Some patches of cloud around, this

:30:32.:30:35.

one across North Wales may produce some showers, a small chance of

:30:35.:30:40.

showers across Northern Ireland and western Scotland. For the majority,

:30:40.:30:45.

staying fine for the rest of the day. 89 on the Moray Firth already.

:30:45.:30:49.

Temperatures dropping quite sharply this evening, clouding over across

:30:49.:30:51.

Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Elsewhere in the West,

:30:51.:30:56.

the best chance of clear skies, looking for that asteroid, across

:30:56.:31:00.

central and eastern areas. In the clear skies, that is where it is

:31:00.:31:05.

going to turn quite foggy with dense patches expected as

:31:05.:31:09.

temperatures in the East dropped down to freezing. Not as cold in

:31:09.:31:11.

the north-west, where they will be patchy rain. That should clear on

:31:11.:31:16.

Saturday. The fog will be slower to disappear. As I say, it could cause

:31:16.:31:21.

a few issues, it may affect the airports across eastern England,

:31:21.:31:26.

and it may take a while to clear. Once it has gone, much of the

:31:26.:31:30.

country will be dry and bright with sunshine. In the West, cloud,

:31:30.:31:34.

drizzly rain around the western coasts, but for the majority it is

:31:34.:31:39.

a dry and bright Saturday, seven-10 Celsius, about average for the time

:31:39.:31:43.

of year. The finance settled weather is going to last, this high

:31:43.:31:47.

pressure is keeping the weather fronts at bay. -- the fine and

:31:47.:31:52.

settled weather. Generally dry, some cloud milling around, early

:31:52.:31:56.

morning mist and fog again, but generally dry and bright,

:31:56.:32:00.

temperatures up to nine Celsius in the sunshine. Overall, the weekend

:32:00.:32:04.

is pretty pleasant, watch out for morning fog on Saturday, and the

:32:04.:32:08.

winds will be like. More information and a little bit of a

:32:08.:32:11.

video explaining more about the asteroid and the chances of seeing

:32:11.:32:19.

Before we go, a reminder of our top story this lunchtime. Horsemeat has
