Shock as part of the Grangemouth complex in Scotland is closed, with

:00:08.:00:14.

the loss of hundreds of jobs. Workers at the petrochemical site

:00:15.:00:17.

walk out after being told of the decision. It follows a bitter row

:00:18.:00:21.

between management and unions over cost cutting. Grangemouth provides

:00:22.:00:24.

most of the fuel to Scotland, the north of England and Northern

:00:25.:00:28.

Ireland. We'll be asking what impact closing part of it site will

:00:29.:00:32.

have. Also this lunchtime... The Prime Minister says he wants to

:00:33.:00:35.

reduce green taxes on Britain's energy companies to try to cut

:00:36.:00:39.

customers' rising bills. Seven godparents are named for Prince

:00:40.:00:42.

George who will be christened this afternoon at a private service at

:00:43.:00:48.

St James's Palace. Give motorists a break. MPs call for a five minute

:00:49.:00:51.

period of grace before traffic wardens hand out parking fines. And

:00:52.:00:56.

how an invasion of venomous spiders has forced a secondary school in

:00:57.:01:06.

the Forest of Dean to close. Later on BBC London: How safe are cycling

:01:07.:01:15.

superhighways? Thousands of phones stolen every month. suspected

:01:16.:01:20.

thieves are targeted. Good afternoon and welcome to the

:01:21.:01:35.

BBC News at One. The owners of the Grangemouth site near Falkirk say

:01:36.:01:37.

they are shutting its petrochemical plant because of a dispute between

:01:38.:01:55.

staff and mangers. -- managers. The workers had refused to accept cost-

:01:56.:01:58.

cutting measures including a wage freeze. But the Grangemouth oil

:01:59.:02:05.

refinery on the site - which was shut last week because of the

:02:06.:02:08.

dispute - will now reopen. James Cook is at Grangemouth. This

:02:09.:02:10.

dispute has been building for months, even years. This morning it

:02:11.:02:16.

reached a climax. Workers have reacted with tears, anger and above

:02:17.:02:23.

all with dismay. It near-silence, they filed into hear their fate.

:02:24.:02:28.

Hundreds of workers at Scotland's largest industrial complex. A site

:02:29.:02:33.

at the centre of a bitter industrial dispute. The news could

:02:34.:02:38.

have been worse but it is still grim. The refinery will remain open

:02:39.:02:43.

about the petrochemical plant will close. I am devastated. Absolutely

:02:44.:02:51.

devastated. That is all I have to say. It is a disgrace. There is

:02:52.:02:55.

going to be no trust. Where does that leave you? Out of a job. It

:02:56.:03:03.

will be horrendous. Just horrendous, trying to live after this. Why it

:03:04.:03:12.

is the plant closing? Inside, management gave reasons for their

:03:13.:03:17.

decision. Today is a very sad day. We have had to announce we are

:03:18.:03:22.

going to close our petrochemical assets down, as a result of the

:03:23.:03:26.

fact they are making significant losses and we have been unable to

:03:27.:03:30.

convince the employees of the site to continue to support the survival

:03:31.:03:37.

plan. Range as employs one has an 370 workers in all. -- Grangemouth

:03:38.:03:54.

employs. The Scottish Government is watching closely. Alex Salmon said

:03:55.:04:00.

what happened match is the worst fears. -- Alex Salmond. The UK

:04:01.:04:07.

government called the closure regrettable. The Government is

:04:08.:04:11.

saddened by this news, particularly for the uncertainty it will bring

:04:12.:04:16.

the workforce and all those who owe their lively had to this plant. The

:04:17.:04:20.

Government does not underestimate the importance to the local

:04:21.:04:26.

community and the Scottish economy. Today's news is very serious - and

:04:27.:04:30.

real economic blow to the local area and Scotland. For many workers,

:04:31.:04:34.

this will be a long and hard winter. It is a difficult time in the

:04:35.:04:47.

coming months as well. In terms of the petrochemical site, could there

:04:48.:04:52.

be a buyer? The company thinks that is unlikely and is liquidating the

:04:53.:04:56.

business. It is not sure the workers will get any redundancy

:04:57.:05:01.

payouts battle. As for the oil refinery side, the company says it

:05:02.:05:07.

wants to restart that up. The underlying dispute about pay and

:05:08.:05:12.

pensions remains. It is still really and clear as to when that

:05:13.:05:16.

part of the business will start again. -- not clear. The Prime

:05:17.:05:20.

Minister says he wants to reduce the green taxes that Britain's

:05:21.:05:23.

energy companies have to pay to try to help bring down rising gas and

:05:24.:05:26.

electricity bills. David Cameron told the Commons that the increase

:05:27.:05:33.

in energy bills was unacceptable. And he said the Government planned

:05:34.:05:36.

to introduce a proper competition test for the energy sector. The

:05:37.:05:45.

political row over energy prices is hotting up. Labour has promised to

:05:46.:05:50.

freeze the cost of gas and electricity bills up a Conservative

:05:51.:05:55.

minister has called for a windfall tax. Sir John Major surprised

:05:56.:05:59.

everyone when he got involved in the debate. He urged politicians to

:06:00.:06:06.

do more. David Cameron is under pressure to come up with a

:06:07.:06:10.

meaningful response. The Labour leader did not waste his

:06:11.:06:14.

opportunity to go on the attack. The Prime Minister said that anyone

:06:15.:06:19.

who wanted to intervene directly in the energy markets was living in it

:06:20.:06:29.

-- in a Marxist universe. The Prime Minister said little could be done

:06:30.:06:33.

about wholesale prices and the cost of delivering energy to people's

:06:34.:06:39.

homes. We will be having a proper competition test carried out over

:06:40.:06:42.

the next year as to whether this market can be more competitive. I

:06:43.:06:49.

want more companies, better regulation and better deals. We

:06:50.:06:54.

also need to roll back the green charges he put in place as energy

:06:55.:06:59.

secretary. The Labour leader was unimpressed. Many people face a

:07:00.:07:04.

choice this winter overheating and eating. These are the ordinary

:07:05.:07:07.

people of these country who the Prime Minister one ever made and

:07:08.:07:13.

whose lives he will never understand. The difference is that

:07:14.:07:17.

John Major is a good man. The Right Honourable Gentleman is acting as a

:07:18.:07:22.

conman. He is promising something he knows he cannot deliver because

:07:23.:07:26.

he never delivered it when he was in office. Ed Miliband has been

:07:27.:07:30.

running a relentless campaign on energy prices and he wants the next

:07:31.:07:35.

election to be about the cost of living and difficulties people

:07:36.:07:39.

phrase in making ends meet. The comments from John Major yesterday

:07:40.:07:44.

were on a similar theme. He told Conservatives to stop talking about

:07:45.:07:47.

Europe and took about things that really mattered to voters. Details

:07:48.:07:52.

of the review will be spelt out in December. It is likely to cause

:07:53.:07:56.

tensions with the Liberal Democrats, who are committed to measures which

:07:57.:08:01.

encourage energy efficiency. Let's speak to our chief political

:08:02.:08:06.

correspondent. The Prime Minister is talking about this proper

:08:07.:08:09.

competition test for the energy companies. What does he mean by

:08:10.:08:16.

that? This energy row has become a ball and chain around the ankle of

:08:17.:08:20.

David Cameron. We saw a fresh attempt by Mr Cameron to sever that

:08:21.:08:24.

chain. With that proposal, with an annual audit of competition in the

:08:25.:08:29.

energy sector, what he is talking about is a review carried out by

:08:30.:08:33.

the Office for Fair Trading, the energy regulator and the

:08:34.:08:37.

Competition Authority, which would have the power to regulate prices

:08:38.:08:41.

and profits in the energy sector. Downing Street has said nothing is

:08:42.:08:44.

ruled out if they establish the energy companies are abusing their

:08:45.:08:48.

position. The difficulty is it is not likely to be set up before the

:08:49.:08:52.

end of the year. It will not report until next year. People's fuel

:08:53.:08:57.

bills a dropping on doormats now. Privately they are some Tories who

:08:58.:09:01.

believe a more effective way for Mr Carman to sever that ball and chain

:09:02.:09:04.

around his ankle would have been to take up John Major's idea of a

:09:05.:09:18.

windfall tax. -- Mr Cameron. You have to say, the prospects at

:09:19.:09:26.

Grangemouth do not look good. They are willing to help in bringing the

:09:27.:09:30.

two sides together but they will not be a financial rescue or

:09:31.:09:35.

nationalisation. The Scottish government is saying it will

:09:36.:09:42.

continue to look for buyers but the timeline is extraordinarily tight.

:09:43.:09:46.

Liquidators will going next week. The idea of getting the two sides

:09:47.:09:51.

back to the table looks very difficult with one source telling

:09:52.:09:57.

me, saying it has gone beyond stalemate. MPs are preparing to

:09:58.:09:59.

question three police officers who have been accused of giving a

:10:00.:10:02.

misleading account of a meeting with the former cabinet minister,

:10:03.:10:04.

Andrew Mitchell, before he resigned over the Plebgate row. Their Chief

:10:05.:10:10.

Constables will also appear before the Home Affairs Select Committee

:10:11.:10:13.

at Westminster this afternoon. It is thought they'll be asked to

:10:14.:10:16.

explain why they didn't pursue disciplinary action against the

:10:17.:10:17.

three officers. It started with a row between

:10:18.:10:28.

Andrew Mitchell and police at the gates of Downing Street. They said

:10:29.:10:35.

he called them plebs. He denied it but admitted swearing. The row has

:10:36.:10:41.

reignited. It is about meeting at his constituency office in the

:10:42.:10:45.

Midlands. Three Police Federation officials asked Mr Major what he

:10:46.:10:50.

said in Downing Street. After the talks, officers said that Mr

:10:51.:10:56.

Mitchell refused to elaborate and should quit. That cost the MP his

:10:57.:11:03.

job in government. A recording said he had given his version of events

:11:04.:11:08.

and had avoided using that word. There was an investigation into

:11:09.:11:12.

claims the three officers were trying to discredit Mr Mitchell.

:11:13.:11:16.

That has led to a dispute as to how they should be dealt with. I do not

:11:17.:11:21.

support what they did. What they did was wrong. They are entitled to

:11:22.:11:27.

fair process. What concerns me is the behaviour of some of Andrew

:11:28.:11:31.

Mitchell's supporters saying, do you want their process thrown out

:11:32.:11:36.

of the window? The officers had no case to answer. The findings are

:11:37.:11:41.

supported by the chief constables from the forces the men serving.

:11:42.:11:47.

The police watchdog said the officers' comments raised an issue

:11:48.:11:51.

of honesty and integrity. The IPCC, backed by David Cameron and the

:11:52.:11:56.

Home Secretary, said they should face misconduct proceedings. A home

:11:57.:12:00.

affairs committee will try to answer this key question. Why have

:12:01.:12:05.

not the three men been disciplined? It will hear from nine witnesses in

:12:06.:12:09.

three hours, among them chief constables and police officers was

:12:10.:12:13.

we will come to a conclusion as to how we think the best solution to

:12:14.:12:19.

this agonisingly difficult problem is, so that there is closed and

:12:20.:12:26.

people can move for it. -- closure. In the past few days, discussions

:12:27.:12:31.

have taken place between the police constables about whether to review

:12:32.:12:36.

the decision about this conduct proceedings or stick to their

:12:37.:12:41.

original ruling. -- misconduct. Prince George will be christened

:12:42.:12:44.

this afternoon in a private service at the Chapel Royal in St James'

:12:45.:12:47.

Palace in London. The three-month- old son of the Duke and Duchess of

:12:48.:12:50.

Cambridge, who's third in line to the throne, is being baptised by

:12:51.:12:53.

the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. This morning the

:12:54.:12:55.

names of the godparents were finally announced.

:12:56.:13:01.

It is the baptism of baby George. His formal entry at the age of

:13:02.:13:08.

three months into the Christian faith and the Church of England.

:13:09.:13:13.

For all the importance of the day, his parents are said to want it to

:13:14.:13:19.

be low key and private as possible. They have chosen seven godparents.

:13:20.:13:26.

Only one is a member of Williams family. Zahra Tindall, married to

:13:27.:13:34.

Mike Tindall. -- William's family pulls up a close friend of Diana is

:13:35.:13:43.

said to be a godmother. She is Julia Samuel. Jamie Lowther-

:13:44.:13:48.

Pinkerton, the former SAS officer, is also a godparent. He more than

:13:49.:13:54.

anyone has guided William over the past eight years. The four other

:13:55.:14:01.

godparents are Emilia Jardine- Paterson, an interior designer.

:14:02.:14:10.

Earl Grosvenor, William van Cutsem and Oliver Baker, a friend of the

:14:11.:14:15.

couple from St Andrew's University. Apart from George, his parents and

:14:16.:14:21.

godparents, there will be few other guests at the christening. Just the

:14:22.:14:25.

Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of

:14:26.:14:29.

Cornwall from the Royal Family and Michael and Carol Milton with their

:14:30.:14:36.

two other children. -- Middleton. The ceremony will take place at St

:14:37.:14:40.

James's Palace. It was here that the coffin of William's mother

:14:41.:14:45.

rested before her funeral and it is here that a baby would have been

:14:46.:14:49.

have first grandchild will be baptised this afternoon.

:14:50.:14:53.

Think alongside the fact there is just one member of William's family,

:14:54.:15:05.

Zara Tindall, usual to have only one Windsor as a got parent, but a sign

:15:06.:15:09.

that William and Catherine want to do it their way. Alongside former

:15:10.:15:15.

school friends, there are two significant friends. Julia Samuel.

:15:16.:15:19.

The former close friend of Diana, William will want the connection

:15:20.:15:23.

with his late mother to continue. He will want his son to have an

:15:24.:15:27.

opportunity to find out more about the woman who would have been his...

:15:28.:15:32.

And Julia Samuel, will be in a position to offer that, I think the

:15:33.:15:41.

Joyce of upup. The former army officer, has offered a very much a

:15:42.:15:46.

mentoring role to William and Harry, and I am sure that, he, they, will

:15:47.:15:52.

want that kind of advice, mentoring role to continue in due course for

:15:53.:15:58.

George. Our top story. The petrochemical

:15:59.:16:02.

plant at Grangemouth near Falkirk is to close with the loss of 800 jobs.

:16:03.:16:06.

It follows a bitter row between management and unions over cost

:16:07.:16:10.

cutting. The company says it wants to resume operations at the

:16:11.:16:14.

refinery. Still to come. How an invasion of venomous spiders has

:16:15.:16:18.

forced a secondary school in the Forest of Dean to close.

:16:19.:16:25.

Later on BBC London, the British sprinter Adam gem live passes on his

:16:26.:16:30.

advice to young athletes and the goals from last night's Champions

:16:31.:16:33.

League action. Join us in 15 minutes.

:16:34.:16:35.

-- gem live. Fires are still urn burning out of

:16:36.:16:44.

control in Australia but officials say the immediate threat to the Blue

:16:45.:16:48.

Mountains, west of Sydney has been averted for the moment, but they

:16:49.:16:53.

warn the crisis is far from over. In total, 73 fires are burn bg across

:16:54.:16:58.

the state of new South Wales, 29 of which are uncontained. Our

:16:59.:17:04.

correspondent sent this report from the town of cat -- can tow ma. For

:17:05.:17:10.

those fighting fire in the Blue Mountains, today had been billed as

:17:11.:17:12.

a difficult day. By the end, the authorities were

:17:13.:17:18.

saying a crisis had been averted but at times it was touch-and-go.

:17:19.:17:23.

Strong winds gusting over 50mph saw a number of fires intensify.

:17:24.:17:27.

People doing what they could, to defend their houses.

:17:28.:17:31.

My plan is to stay and fight the fire. This property was built in

:17:32.:17:37.

1823. I don't intend to lose it. The main fire front is up this hillside

:17:38.:17:40.

and the winds are really swirling round today, it means the houses and

:17:41.:17:43.

the communities just down the valley are at the mercy of those winds, and

:17:44.:17:47.

which direction they go. Today, they are under threat.

:17:48.:17:50.

During the afternoon, the threat level of several fires was upgraded.

:17:51.:17:56.

We are nowt out of the woods yet. We have hours to go. There are still

:17:57.:18:00.

fires flaring up, running, impacting on community, there is every

:18:01.:18:05.

prospect we will see some more. There is ef preprospect we will see

:18:06.:18:09.

fires breaking out on the xietsing fire grounds we have got. Meanwhile,

:18:10.:18:14.

in a radio interview, Australia's new Prime Minister a volunteer

:18:15.:18:18.

fireman himself, dismissed the idea this year's fires were linked to

:18:19.:18:24.

global warming. Look, climate change is real, as I have often said and we

:18:25.:18:28.

should take strong action against it, but these fires are not a

:18:29.:18:34.

function of climate change thra, a function of life. Other also

:18:35.:18:38.

disagree, these follows Australia's hottest 12 months on record. They

:18:39.:18:41.

have come unusually early in the year. And although crisis may have

:18:42.:18:46.

been averted today, the fire season has only just begin.

:18:47.:18:51.

We can get the latest now from John. What is the situation there at the

:18:52.:19:02.

moment? Well, I think the firefighters think they got on top

:19:03.:19:06.

of things today and got out relatively unscathed. There had been

:19:07.:19:10.

a lot of worry leading up to today with the strong winds, the fires

:19:11.:19:14.

aren't out, they are still burning not far from where we are standing

:19:15.:19:18.

now. I think the next few days and probably weeks and months, this is a

:19:19.:19:21.

long fire season ahead, the Fire Service here are going to be urging

:19:22.:19:26.

vigilance, one interesting note today that the Fire Service and the

:19:27.:19:31.

police have announced that one of the biggest fires that is burning

:19:32.:19:34.

still, just up the road from here was started by the military,

:19:35.:19:39.

carrying out an exercise with explosives last Wednesday. As I say,

:19:40.:19:44.

that is a fire that has destroyed 40,000 hectares or so, I think, and

:19:45.:19:51.

is burning today. Facebook has removed a video clip

:19:52.:19:55.

showing a woman being decapitated, and it has issued new rules about

:19:56.:19:59.

what can be shared on its site. The a parent U-turn comes after the

:20:00.:20:03.

company was heavily criticised for lifting a temporary ban on such

:20:04.:20:09.

images. Face back says it will still allow graphic content but will take

:20:10.:20:13.

a look at its context and will remove content which celebrating

:20:14.:20:17.

violence. -- sell braces -- celebrates.

:20:18.:20:21.

Motorists should be given a five minute period of grace before

:20:22.:20:24.

traffic wardens hand them a fine, that is accord to a group of MPs,

:20:25.:20:30.

the Transport Select Committee says using penalties to raise money for

:20:31.:20:33.

local authorities in England is neither acceptable or legal.

:20:34.:20:39.

Councils aren't supposed to use parking fines and charges

:20:40.:20:42.

specifically to raise money. Today's report says that is unacceptable,

:20:43.:20:46.

and illegal. But some in Wakefield this morning

:20:47.:20:50.

thought parking wardens were a little too quick to penalise. If you

:20:51.:20:54.

are five minutes late between your ticket, they give you a ticket. They

:20:55.:20:57.

won't give you any leeway because I have been booked myself. It is

:20:58.:21:02.

revenue stream for most councils is and they probably see it that way.

:21:03.:21:06.

If you park somewhere you shouldn't be they are there within a minute,

:21:07.:21:10.

two minutes and they have got you. What you do? The Transport Committee

:21:11.:21:17.

says each Local Authority should publish an annual report to show

:21:18.:21:20.

where the money is coming from and how it is being spent. The MP says

:21:21.:21:23.

drivers could be given a five minute grace period, after the time they

:21:24.:21:27.

have paid for runs out, before a parking ticket is issues -- issue

:21:28.:21:32.

issued and a freeze in the maximum penalty. Parking is needed to manage

:21:33.:21:37.

traffic and stop congestion but the public belief they are having to pay

:21:38.:21:40.

enormous ams of money to fund that and councils are using that for

:21:41.:21:45.

other things, we need much more clarity and transparency S Tickets

:21:46.:21:49.

and charges make councils hundreds of millions of pounds more, than the

:21:50.:21:53.

cost of running their parking services. This surplus has been

:21:54.:21:57.

criticised by minister, and motoring group, but local authorities say all

:21:58.:22:02.

the money goes back in to local transport budgets. So councils

:22:03.:22:06.

insist their parking profits are not used to fund other spending.

:22:07.:22:11.

In every case that surplus is ploughed back in to making sure that

:22:12.:22:15.

transport is subsidised for young people, for the elderly, and in some

cases it is used for potholes and we although that is a problem.

:22:21.:22:25.

Today's report calls for greater oversight of the use of CCTV to

:22:26.:22:29.

issue parking fines. Last month the Government said it was considering a

:22:30.:22:34.

ban on park camera, and the vehicles ministers call spy cars.

:22:35.:22:40.

#3 The impact of the Government's benefit cap has been called into

:22:41.:22:44.

question by a new study. The Chartered Institute of Housing

:22:45.:22:47.

looked at one London borough and concluded that capping the amount of

:22:48.:22:50.

benefits received did not encourage many people back in to work, but

:22:51.:22:55.

ministers say the research is flawed and too limited to provide a true

:22:56.:22:59.

picture. Our social affairs correspondent reports.

:23:00.:23:03.

The benefits cap is one of the government's most popular welfare

:23:04.:23:06.

reform, it limits the amount of benefits that are working age own

:23:07.:23:11.

household can receive to a maximum of ?500 a week. The Government

:23:12.:23:15.

expects to save ?110 million a year. The London borough of Haringey was

:23:16.:23:19.

one of the first places to have the cap introduced. And based on what

:23:20.:23:24.

has happened in this one area, the Khost Chows has found that of the --

:23:25.:23:30.

the Chartered Institute of Housing just 74 had found work of the first

:23:31.:23:36.

four months and nearly 50% needed local authority support to pay their

:23:37.:23:40.

rent. The Government had some objectives to increase the number of

:23:41.:23:42.

people who were working and reduce the amount of money they spent on

:23:43.:23:47.

benefits in total, and in Haringey neither are being achieved and they

:23:48.:23:51.

are both some way from being achieved.

:23:52.:23:56.

This woman helps single mothers find a job. Since the cap she says many

:23:57.:24:02.

more want to work but it is not easy Childcare is a big issue. Many

:24:03.:24:07.

parents, having maybe not worked for a long period of time, it is a big

:24:08.:24:12.

change children to go to afterschool clubs and it is costly. Whether what

:24:13.:24:17.

has happened in Haringey will become clear in time, but this is the

:24:18.:24:20.

second report in as many weeks to suggest that the Government's

:24:21.:24:24.

welfare changes may not save as much money as ministers had hoped. Last

:24:25.:24:31.

week researchers suggest that savings may fall short of

:24:32.:24:35.

expectations. Ministers are defending the cap. This report is

:24:36.:24:40.

flawed. It doesn't take the facts into consideration, that we knew

:24:41.:24:45.

there would be a problem, 16,500 people got into jobs because we

:24:46.:24:48.

contacted them before we brought in the cap. It's a very small

:24:49.:24:53.

controlled area, it happens to be a London inner city borough. Changing

:24:54.:24:57.

behaviour takes time and whatever initial problems the cap throws up

:24:58.:25:01.

the Government remains committed to the problem.

:25:02.:25:06.

An invasion of venomous spiders has forced a secondary school in the

:25:07.:25:10.

Forest of Dean to close. The school has been infested with false widow

:25:11.:25:16.

spiders. The spiderer's bite can cause swelling or fever though

:25:17.:25:19.

no-one hat the school has been bitten.

:25:20.:25:24.

-- at. Yes, normally there would be hundreds of kids out here enjoying

:25:25.:25:29.

their lunch break but this place is deserted, school is out, for spider,

:25:30.:25:33.

they were found in a block at the back of the building on Monday, then

:25:34.:25:36.

in other buildings round the site yesterday, so the decision was taken

:25:37.:25:41.

to close today, and call in the pest control officer, that is under way

:25:42.:25:44.

right now, and if you don't like spiders you might want to look away

:25:45.:25:49.

for a minute. A biology lesson they weren't

:25:50.:25:54.

expecting. This is a false widow spider, like the ones found inside

:25:55.:26:00.

the Dean Academy. Today, no lesson, the only uniforms are being worn by

:26:01.:26:05.

pest control officers, fumigating any part of the school. For pupils

:26:06.:26:09.

and parents, it is a surprise day off. I was scared at first, because

:26:10.:26:14.

I didn't know like what kind of spider it was, and to be truthful I

:26:15.:26:18.

am not a big fan of them. I was shocked to hear she was having a day

:26:19.:26:23.

off for spiders. I mean we live if f the forest. So we have got

:26:24.:26:26.

everything round here that can bite us, and you know, I think it is,

:26:27.:26:33.

maybe overreacting. I am not complaining. Like the spiders now,

:26:34.:26:39.

but I wouldn't pick one. You like them because they have given you day

:26:40.:26:44.

off? Yes. It is about the size of a 50 pence coin and is the most

:26:45.:26:47.

dangerous biting spider known in Britain. It came here from abroad in

:26:48.:26:52.

the 1870s, arriving in the south-west, but over the last 25

:26:53.:26:56.

year, it has been found right across southern England, and up into the

:26:57.:27:00.

Midlands. There he goes. This spider expert

:27:01.:27:06.

who lives near the school says he has had more reports of false widows

:27:07.:27:09.

in Gloucestershire but he thinks that is because of increased media

:27:10.:27:14.

coverage. He says they are not lethal and we shouldn't panic. It is

:27:15.:27:19.

very slow-moving. Few you got bitten by it you are unlucky. Some people

:27:20.:27:25.

do experience serious reactions to the bites and anyone with concerns

:27:26.:27:31.

is advised to seek medical advice. The school is stressing that nobody

:27:32.:27:37.

has been bitten, and as for that mum we heard in the piece saying she

:27:38.:27:41.

thought it might be an overreaction to shut the gate, the principal has

:27:42.:27:46.

issued a statement saying they took that decision to call in the pest

:27:47.:27:51.

control officers after taking advice from health officials at the

:27:52.:27:54.

council. They are hoping they will be able to re-open tomorrow, without

:27:55.:27:59.

any spiders on the site. Lets us look at the weather now.

:28:00.:28:09.

If you are scared of thunder and lightning you won't have enjoyed

:28:10.:28:12.

last night. There was spectacular show on offer, there is one

:28:13.:28:16.

photograph taken in Hampshire yesterday evening. The storms are

:28:17.:28:19.

clear I away and the weather is calming down, so for most places it

:28:20.:28:23.

is a bright and breezy afternoon, with sunny spells coming through,

:28:24.:28:27.

and those winds continuing to drop. A few showers still left in

:28:28.:28:32.

north-west areas but in the south the showers are clearing away. Some

:28:33.:28:36.

sunny spells in parts of eastern Scotland but in the north-west it

:28:37.:28:40.

remains blustery. A cooler feel and the showers continue to pepper

:28:41.:28:43.

western Scotland and Northern Ireland. A few showers getting into

:28:44.:28:47.

north-west England. Possibly North Wales but to the east of the

:28:48.:28:51.

Pennines things are drier and certainly south of Birmingham, most

:28:52.:28:54.

places having a bright and breezy afternoon with spells of sunshine.

:28:55.:28:58.

Temperatures lower than they have been, but out of the breeze not

:28:59.:29:02.

feeling too bad for October. The winds continue to die down

:29:03.:29:06.

overnight, they will remain lively in northern Scotland, but elsewhere

:29:07.:29:12.

with light winds and clear skies, that can of course lead top

:29:13.:29:17.

problems. It has been warm the last couple of nights but tonight down to

:29:18.:29:21.

single digits so a fresher feel for Thursday morning. There could be

:29:22.:29:24.

mist and fog round but that should tend to clear and generally,

:29:25.:29:28.

tomorrow looks like being a dry and for most a bright day. There will be

:29:29.:29:32.

more cloud in the south and west. Overall, as I said it is looking

:29:33.:29:36.

pretty good, with temperatures after that chilly start recovering into

:29:37.:29:39.

the mid teens. Make the most of tomorrow, because

:29:40.:29:42.

well, by Friday we are almost back to square one. Another low, another

:29:43.:29:47.

set of weather fronts, the isobars squeezing together, so yes, another

:29:48.:29:52.

bout of wet and windy weather. A bleak looking start to Friday. The

:29:53.:29:57.

rain lingers in Scotland, there will be lots of blustery showers in Wales

:29:58.:30:01.

and south-west England. The winds continue to come up from the south,

:30:02.:30:04.

so here is another mild day, where we get sunshine, temperatures

:30:05.:30:08.

getting into the high teens, the winds are big feature of the weather

:30:09.:30:12.

this weekend. Some of us will have a dry Saturday morning before rain

:30:13.:30:16.

arrives and bluesry showers on Sunday, with that sort of forecast,

:30:17.:30:20.

no surprise to see another low nearby. It is this weather front

:30:21.:30:24.

that spreads the weather front on Saturday. Lots of showers for

:30:25.:30:28.

Sunday. I want to draw your attention further south.

:30:29.:30:31.

It doesn't look that scary at the moment, but it does have the

:30:32.:30:35.

potential, that is what it is, the potential to turn things stormry on

:30:36.:30:40.

Sunday night and Monday morning. The message at the moment stay tuned to

:30:41.:30:47.

the forecast. The petrochemical plant at

:30:48.:30:50.

Grangemouth is to close with the loss of 800 jobs. It follows a

:30:51.:30:55.

bitter row between management and unions over cost cutting. The

:30:56.:30:59.

company says it wants to resume operations. And just to let you know

:31:00.:31:03.

if you want to watch the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arriving with

:31:04.:31:08.

Prince George, for his christening, along with the God parents you can

:31:09.:31:12.

do so round 3.00.

:31:13.:31:15.
