Labour says EU citizens could still come to Britain after Brexit

:00:08.:00:09.

The Shadow Brexit Secretary laid out his party's pledges if it wins the

:00:10.:00:15.

election, saying Labour would also protect the rights of EU citizens

:00:16.:00:21.

On day one of a Labour Government we'd immediately guarantee all EU

nationals currently living the in the UK will see no change in their

legal status as a result of Brexit. Day one, big commitment.

The Prime Minister Theresa May will be out campaigning

Good afternoon, and welcome to the BBC News at One.

:01:58.:02:06.

Labour says it will guarantee the rights of EU nationals

:02:07.:02:10.

living in the UK after Brexit, if it wins the general election.

:02:11.:02:13.

Setting out Labour's proposals for negotiating Britain's exit from the

:02:14.:02:15.

European Union, the Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer,

:02:16.:02:17.

said Labour would also prioritise jobs.

:02:18.:02:19.

He said he accepted that free movement of workers couldn't

:02:20.:02:21.

continue after Brexit - but suggested EU nationals

:02:22.:02:25.

could still come to the UK if they have a guaranteed job offer.

:02:26.:02:30.

Our political correspondent, Alex Forsyth reports.

:02:31.:02:39.

On an issue so key, Labour has struggled to make its message clear.

:02:40.:02:47.

Today, it set out its vision for Brexit and promised it was different

:02:48.:02:52.

to the Prime Minister's. We do not accept that Brexit has to mean

:02:53.:02:58.

whatever Theresa May says it means. We do not accept that there has to

:02:59.:03:04.

be a reckless Tory Brexit. Specifically, the party said a

:03:05.:03:08.

Labour Government would guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in

:03:09.:03:12.

the UK. It would Liberal Democrat slate to keep things like employment

:03:13.:03:16.

rights and protections for consumers and the environment. And it would

:03:17.:03:20.

scrap the current negotiating strategy and instead focus on

:03:21.:03:25.

retaining the benefits of the single market and the customs union. The

:03:26.:03:32.

party said its focus would be on protecting jobs and the economy.

:03:33.:03:38.

Immigration should not be 9 only red line or overaveraging priority.

:03:39.:03:41.

Freedom of movement has to go. It will have to change. But we must

:03:42.:03:45.

have immigration that works for our communities and our economy. That

:03:46.:03:49.

means there has to be movement of people to come and work in this

:03:50.:03:53.

country. How that's managed will have to be resolved. The last thing

:03:54.:03:58.

we want is for our businesses to go bankrupt. Labour says the current

:03:59.:04:02.

membership of the single market which comes with the condition of

:04:03.:04:07.

free movement of people must end but suggests there could be a reformed

:04:08.:04:12.

membership of that and the customs Euanen says the Tories were wrong to

:04:13.:04:17.

rule out options so early in the negotiations. But the Conservatives

:04:18.:04:22.

appear unconcerned saying their rivals' Brexit message is still

:04:23.:04:26.

confused, chaotic and on trade, indistinct from theirs. We want to

:04:27.:04:32.

get access to the rest of the world's markets but maintain as much

:04:33.:04:37.

as possible, passably all, of the current markets we have. They are

:04:38.:04:43.

trying to rebrand our argument of the last nine months. Theresa May

:04:44.:04:46.

continues to campaign in Labour seats. Later today in Wales.

:04:47.:04:52.

Confident her message, a clear commitment to Brexit and strong

:04:53.:04:55.

leadership, can win over Brexiteers and Labour voters.

:04:56.:04:59.

Our Assistant Political Editor Norman Smith is in Westminster.

:05:00.:05:04.

There's some striking comments from Keir Starmer, Norman. Is this a much

:05:05.:05:12.

clearer idea for everyone for what Labour sees here post-Brexit? We got

:05:13.:05:17.

some clarity on Brexit. There are still a lot of awkward questions for

:05:18.:05:21.

Labour's political opponents to pick away at. We've clarity in so far as

:05:22.:05:26.

Labour say they accept we are leaving the EU. There's no going

:05:27.:05:30.

back. There's not going to be a second referendum. But there's much

:05:31.:05:35.

less clarity on key issues such as freedom of moment. Keir Starmer said

:05:36.:05:42.

they'd end it but not for those EU migrants coming here who have a job

:05:43.:05:48.

lined up or students coming here to university or college. Similarly on

:05:49.:05:53.

the timetable, sir Keir Starmer said Labour would avoid a cliff edge

:05:54.:05:58.

departure from the EU by putting in transitional arrangements. That

:05:59.:06:03.

might mean don't leave until 2022, perhaps much later than many people

:06:04.:06:07.

expected. He suggested Parliament could block any final Brexit deal

:06:08.:06:11.

leaving open the question, what happens if Parliament keeps on

:06:12.:06:16.

voting down that final deal? But, in a way, those questions are not

:06:17.:06:21.

Labour's real difficulty. The real difficulty is it is extraordinarily

:06:22.:06:26.

late in the day to be trying to clarify your position on Brexit just

:06:27.:06:30.

weeks away from a general election when the referendum happened a year

:06:31.:06:35.

ago and when Theresa May's putting forward a very simple line on

:06:36.:06:41.

Brexit. No to the single market, no to free movement of people. No to

:06:42.:06:45.

the European Court of Justice. But Labour know they have to try to draw

:06:46.:06:52.

a line on Brexit. To clear the decks of Brexit so it is no longer a

:06:53.:06:57.

critical issue. If they can't, it will be very hard to get a hearing

:06:58.:07:01.

on other policies they want to focus this election on. Thank you. Theresa

:07:02.:07:06.

May is on the campaign trail in Wales as she tries to take territory

:07:07.:07:11.

off Labour. Let's talk to our Political Correspondent Vicki Young.

:07:12.:07:16.

What do we read into Theresa May choosing to visit South Wales? I

:07:17.:07:23.

think she's sending out the signal clearly there are no no-go areas for

:07:24.:07:28.

the Tories. While coming to Labour Heartlands in the South of Wales.

:07:29.:07:31.

The Tories are confident, partly because of Brexit. She says she

:07:32.:07:36.

wants a strong mandate to make sure Brexit happens and Wales is a

:07:37.:07:41.

country that voted to Leave. There is a sizeable Ukip vote here in

:07:42.:07:46.

Wales. They polled around 15%-15% last time round. They are hoping to

:07:47.:07:51.

bring across many of those people. It will be interesting to see

:07:52.:07:56.

whether Theresa May broadens her argument to talk about social

:07:57.:08:03.

mobility, to talk about helping people on lower incomes. Her message

:08:04.:08:07.

here today is that Labour has taken voters in Wales for granted. She

:08:08.:08:11.

says they haven't delivered when it comes to schools and hospitals.

:08:12.:08:15.

She's urging people here to turn their back on tribal politics. Time

:08:16.:08:19.

to look for fresh ideas is what she's going to say. We'll see how

:08:20.:08:23.

that goes down here. If the Tories were to win the most seats here in

:08:24.:08:27.

Wales, more than Labour, it would be the first time since the 1850s.

:08:28.:08:31.

She's aiming very high. The leader of the Labour here in Wales, car

:08:32.:08:37.

when Jones, admits the party has a mountain to climb but they feel

:08:38.:08:40.

confident that tradition of voting Labour will help them in this

:08:41.:08:42.

contest. Plaid Cymru launched its general

:08:43.:08:44.

election campaign in Bangor today. Its leader, Leanne Wood, said her

:08:45.:08:47.

priority was to protect the nation The party currently holds three of

:08:48.:08:49.

the 40 Westminster seats in Wales. In her launch speed, she said the

:08:50.:09:05.

snap election hasn't taken her party by surprise.

:09:06.:09:08.

And while there's talk of polls and voting intentions,

:09:09.:09:14.

it's the local elections on May 4th that will be the real poll.

:09:15.:09:23.

And you keep up to date on the latest on the election campaign

:09:24.:09:28.

The French presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen, has temporarily stood

:09:29.:09:44.

down as leader of the far-right National Front to try to broaden her

:09:45.:09:47.

support in the run up to the final round of voting on May 7th.

:09:48.:09:51.

She told French television that she needs to be above party politics.

:09:52.:09:53.

This morning, Ms Le Pen and her rival Emmanuel Macron attended a

:09:54.:09:57.

the police officer shot dead on the Champs Elysees last week.

:09:58.:10:04.

They were just faces among many others, because this was not

:10:05.:10:11.

Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen were there as national figures

:10:12.:10:17.

to take part in the nation's tribute to police officer Xavier Jugele.

:10:18.:10:24.

After the coffin was brought into the courtyard of police

:10:25.:10:27.

headquarters, it was the officer's civil partner, Etienne

:10:28.:10:30.

TRANSLATION: When the news came out that something serious had happened

:10:31.:10:35.

on the Champs-Elysees, and that a police officer

:10:36.:10:37.

had lost their life, a little voice told me it was you.

:10:38.:10:41.

And it reminded me of that wise quote, you will not have my hate.

:10:42.:10:46.

For President Hollande, this is not his first ceremony

:10:47.:10:50.

to remember police officers killed by terrorism.

:10:51.:10:53.

The level of violence which police and gendarme had

:10:54.:10:56.

to face kept getting worse, he said.

:10:57.:10:59.

In Xavier Jugele, France had lost one of the bravest

:11:00.:11:02.

This morning's ceremony for Xavier Jugele and this

:11:03.:11:09.

small makeshift memorial on the Champs-Elysees on the spot

:11:10.:11:12.

where he died are a reminder of how terrorism and security are a central

:11:13.:11:16.

Marine Le Pen in particular is telling the country that

:11:17.:11:20.

with her tougher line on deportations, and sentencing,

:11:21.:11:25.

on immigration, that attacks like this would be much harder

:11:26.:11:28.

She's the outsider in the race, so Marine Le Pen is coming out

:11:29.:11:35.

fighting, accusing Emmanuel Macron of not having the guts

:11:36.:11:37.

I'm no longer president of the front national. I'm the candidate for the

:11:38.:11:57.

presidency. I want to be the vision of hope,

:11:58.:11:58.

Emmanuel Macron is biding his time, but he knows that he can't

:11:59.:12:04.

leave his rival to make the running alone on so vital an issue

:12:05.:12:08.

Sir Elton John has cancelled a series of shows in the US

:12:09.:12:14.

after falling ill with what's been described as a potentially deadly

:12:15.:12:16.

The singer, who's 70, spent two nights in intensive care

:12:17.:12:20.

after contracting the illness while on tour in Chile earlier this month.

:12:21.:12:23.

His management team says he is now recovering at home.

:12:24.:12:25.

Our entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba reports.

:12:26.:12:30.

The 70-year-old is one of music's hardest-working acts,

:12:31.:12:31.

touring all over the world, and still giving energetic

:12:32.:12:34.

performances at what for many would be retirement age.

:12:35.:12:43.

During the recent series of concerts in South America,

:12:44.:12:46.

he contracted what his medical team has called a potentially deadly

:12:47.:12:50.

bacterial infection, becoming ill on his way back

:12:51.:12:55.

In a statement, Sir Elton's management said...

:12:56.:13:20.

The illness has meant that Sir Elton has had to cancel planned concerts

:13:21.:13:39.

in April and May in California and Las Vegas.

:13:40.:13:44.

He is expected to return to the concert stage in June in London.

:13:45.:13:48.

Tensions have increased on the Korean peninsula, as the North

:13:49.:13:57.

carried out a massive artillery exercise to mark the anniversary

:13:58.:14:02.

In the South, a US submarine has docked,

:14:03.:14:07.

adding to the build-up of forces there.

:14:08.:14:09.

Envoys from South Korea, the US and Japan are holding talks in Tokyo.

:14:10.:14:12.

Our correspondent Wyre Davies has the latest.

:14:13.:14:19.

An American nuclear powered submarine glides quietly into the

:14:20.:14:21.

As tensions rise in the Korean peninsular, it is being joined by a

:14:22.:14:39.

much larger group of warships. Led by an aircraft carrier. It is the

:14:40.:14:44.

latest in a series of developments that shows how seriously Washington

:14:45.:14:49.

is taking North Korea's expanding nuclear programme. This is Donald

:14:50.:14:53.

Trump's toughest foreign policy challenge by far. His predecessors

:14:54.:14:58.

strategic patience with Pyongyang is over. Donald Trump is demanding

:14:59.:15:04.

tough action or house. The council must be prepared to impose

:15:05.:15:10.

additional sanctions on North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile

:15:11.:15:13.

programmes. This is a real threat to the world, whether we want to talk

:15:14.:15:20.

about it or not. He has also summoned all 100 members of the

:15:21.:15:24.

Senate for a special White House briefing on Korea. What comes next?

:15:25.:15:30.

As it marks the 85th anniversary of the founding of its army, the North

:15:31.:15:35.

Korean regime has reacted with fury as words, if not yet actions to be

:15:36.:15:40.

US's naval manoeuvres and a special Security Council meeting on the

:15:41.:15:44.

region. The Foreign Ministry's response was almost bloodcurdling.

:15:45.:15:50.

Now the US has pulled out its sword to kill us, we will pull up our

:15:51.:15:56.

grand sword of justice and killed the US imperialists with our strong

:15:57.:16:00.

and Revolutionary Guard. Our nuclear forces stand at the core. --

:16:01.:16:07.

Revolutionary Guard power. The rhetoric is alarming. Observers in

:16:08.:16:13.

the South say no unusual developments have been detected.

:16:14.:16:18.

China, the North's only major ally, has urged the US not to act without

:16:19.:16:23.

UN approval and called on both sides to show restraint. Trying to

:16:24.:16:27.

second-guess two very different but unpredictable leaders in Kim Jong-un

:16:28.:16:32.

and Donald Trump is not proving easy.

:16:33.:16:37.

The founder of Wikipedia is launching an online news service

:16:38.:16:39.

Jimmy Wales says that Wikitribune will use both professional

:16:40.:16:45.

journalists and what he's described as community contributors

:16:46.:16:47.

but will accept donations from supporters.

:16:48.:16:55.

Whether deliberate distortions dressed up as real news

:16:56.:17:04.

or clandestine political advertising that targets you on social media,

:17:05.:17:08.

voters in America, Germany and France have been hit.

:17:09.:17:13.

The question now is - could this new form of campaigning

:17:14.:17:16.

online be coming to Britain ahead of the general election?

:17:17.:17:19.

If political messages are broadcast during an election campaign,

:17:20.:17:21.

But what about messages that are published online?

:17:22.:17:26.

They said to try the Electoral Commission.

:17:27.:17:29.

They said, "That certainly would not be us."

:17:30.:17:40.

I rang the Advertising Standards Agency and Ofcom too.

:17:41.:17:43.

They both said it falls outside of their remit.

:17:44.:17:45.

The question remains - who polices this stuff?

:17:46.:17:47.

Wikitribune is a new site with a new model for the news...

:17:48.:17:50.

Wikitribune will ask for monthly subscriptions from a community

:17:51.:17:54.

of users who help to verify and shape online news themselves.

:17:55.:17:58.

It was launched this morning by the founder

:17:59.:18:01.

He argues that we need a sharp press at all layers of society.

:18:02.:18:08.

The rise of hateful politics, I think, is a direct result of this

:18:09.:18:11.

lack of quality in terms of giving people facts.

:18:12.:18:19.

If big internet companies won't take responsibility for what appears

:18:20.:18:21.

on their platforms and regulation has not kept pace with technology,

:18:22.:18:26.

it may fall to us to police fake news ourselves.

of the World Snooker Championship are under way

:18:58.:19:00.

as five-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan recovers

:19:01.:19:04.

from three frames down. It's nearly 30 years

:19:05.:19:14.

since Tracy Edwards and her crew made history by becoming the first

:19:15.:19:16.

all-female team to complete The 12-strong crew crossed

:19:17.:19:20.

the world's oceans in a yacht called Maiden,

:19:21.:19:27.

but after the race, the boat was sold and ultimately

:19:28.:19:29.

abandoned overseas - After nine months at sea, Tracy

:19:30.:19:47.

Edwards leads the crew back home and into the record books. The first all

:19:48.:19:52.

field team in the Whitbread Round the World Race and finished second

:19:53.:19:59.

overall -- all female. 27 years on, Tracy and many of the original crew

:20:00.:20:03.

are back, reunited with the yacht, Maiden. Why? I heard she was

:20:04.:20:08.

abandoned in the Seychelles about four years ago. It was at a time in

:20:09.:20:13.

my life I was looking for something to do, I thought, this beautiful

:20:14.:20:18.

boat that did so much and so famous, it cannot rot away. We started

:20:19.:20:28.

fundraising, we did crowd funding. We are going to do a three-year

:20:29.:20:32.

world tour promoting the rights of girls to have an education. Back in

:20:33.:20:37.

British waters today after being rescued from the Seychelles, she is

:20:38.:20:41.

a long way from being seaworthy. Down below deck, this would have

:20:42.:20:47.

been home for the 12 woman crew on the nine-month voyage around the

:20:48.:20:51.

world. As you can tell, it has not fared so well over the past 27

:20:52.:20:55.

years. These are some of the old sales. There are problems at the

:20:56.:20:59.

front of the boat. Even a hole in the hull. There is work to be done

:21:00.:21:10.

to get the Maiden seaworthy. They want to set sail by summer next year

:21:11.:21:15.

when Tracy and the crew first set off around the world, they faced

:21:16.:21:21.

incredible personal physical and natural challenges. Mountains to

:21:22.:21:23.

climb made from the Globe's toughest seas. But returning Maiden to the

:21:24.:21:29.

oceans and educating girls around the world could prove to be the most

:21:30.:21:39.

ambitious and rewarding voyage yet. John Maguire, BBC News, Southampton.

:21:40.:21:43.

MPs are urging the Government to do more to ensure that

:21:44.:21:46.

all new-build homes are suitable for people with disabilities.

:21:47.:21:48.

The Commons Women and Equalities Committee says more than 90%

:21:49.:21:50.

of homes in England are inaccessible to someone who has a disability -

:21:51.:21:54.

often because of stairs, narrow doorways or lack

:21:55.:21:56.

Our disability affairs correspondent, Nikki Fox, reports.

:21:57.:22:03.

Karlene has never lived in a house that's fully accessible.

:22:04.:22:16.

And even after I've negotiated this door,

:22:17.:22:18.

Born with cerebral palsy, she is able to live independently

:22:19.:22:22.

I'd love to cook my own meals and use my oven, but I can't.

:22:23.:22:26.

But some of the features in her home make it impossible

:22:27.:22:28.

The biggest issue is my kitchen, that is completely

:22:29.:22:32.

And I have to rely on support, external support.

:22:33.:22:41.

And I've been on the accessible housing register for ten years.

:22:42.:22:51.

And as to this day, I've still not seen a fully accessible property.

:22:52.:22:54.

The report states that only 7% of all homes in England have a basic

:22:55.:22:57.

It looks at other challenges disabled people face,

:22:58.:23:04.

and calls for an investigation into how the Equality Act

:23:05.:23:07.

is being used from the early stages of any development.

:23:08.:23:11.

When it comes to planning our offices, our homes

:23:12.:23:16.

and our built environment, disability still seems to be

:23:17.:23:22.

an add-on - not critical and not part of the planning mechanisms.

The Goverment's current policy states that it is up to councils

to decide how many homes should be built with higher

But with an estimated 300,000 disabled people in unsuitable homes,

the committee is calling for better legislation on a national level.

President Trump's daughter, Ivanka, is meeting the German chancellor,

:23:42.:23:46.

Angela Merkel, in Berlin this lunchtime, on her first

:23:47.:23:49.

international trip since being given an official position

:23:50.:23:50.

Ivanka is an influential adviser to her father,

:23:51.:23:56.

but there's been criticism in the US about the nature of her role

:23:57.:24:00.

Summit. Alongside her, global figures including the German

:24:15.:24:18.

Chancellor, Angela Merkel. For the daughter of the US President, these

:24:19.:24:22.

are unprecedented steps. Unofficial foreign visit and this is before the

:24:23.:24:27.

president himself has made his first trip abroad -- and official. She is

:24:28.:24:33.

openly pushing the policy agenda back home. Sadly the US is one of

:24:34.:24:39.

the only countries in the world, the only developed country, that does

:24:40.:24:42.

not have a paid leave policy for the benefit of families. First daughter

:24:43.:24:49.

Ivanka Trump takes to the world stage, making her first big

:24:50.:24:53.

international trip... Back in the US, all of this is headline news.

:24:54.:24:59.

Already an influential adviser to her father with her own office in

:25:00.:25:03.

the White House, Ivanka Trump now and seems to be working to improve

:25:04.:25:06.

relations between the US and Germany. When Donald Trump that the

:25:07.:25:12.

German leader Angela Merkel in Washington last month, it did not

:25:13.:25:18.

appear to go well. But at one of the meetings, Ivanka Trump was placed

:25:19.:25:22.

next to the Chancellor, they seemed to strike up a relationship, leading

:25:23.:25:28.

to the invitation to attend the summit in Berlin. I definitely think

:25:29.:25:32.

that for Angela Merkel, it is a diplomatic move tee move, very

:25:33.:25:39.

strategic. -- it is a diplomatic move. Going via Ivanka Trump to

:25:40.:25:42.

improve relationships with the US. While that benefits Angela Merkel,

:25:43.:25:49.

it also pushes Ivanka Trump even more into the limelight, raising

:25:50.:25:52.

further questions about the role of the President's family in the White

Taking moderate exercise several times a week is the best way

:26:09.:26:11.

for people over the age of 50 to keep their brain

:26:12.:26:13.

That's according to a new report, which says a combination

:26:14.:26:16.

of aerobic activity, such as swimming, cycling

:26:17.:26:18.

or jogging, with muscle strengthening exercise

:26:19.:26:20.

Tuesday lunchtime, and it's the over-50s dance class

:26:21.:26:26.

But it's not just their feet that are being exercised.

:26:27.:26:32.

Researchers say their mental powers are also being stretched,

:26:33.:26:34.

by getting more blood pumping to the brain.

:26:35.:26:36.

I used to do rock 'n roll and then I stopped,

:26:37.:26:51.

Does it keep you sharp, do you think?

:26:52.:27:00.

I'm very good at quizzes, I'll tell you!

:27:01.:27:03.

We've known for a long time that exercise is good

:27:04.:27:06.

for both our physical and mental health as we get older.

:27:07.:27:10.

But this research pulls together 39 international reports

:27:11.:27:15.

and says aerobic activity improves our ability to think,

:27:16.:27:17.

Physical exercise can really help your brain function,

:27:18.:27:23.

And that's really a very important motivator for people.

:27:24.:27:31.

Because everybody cares about how well they age from the point of view

:27:32.:27:35.

The research found that just half-an-hour of moderate exercise

:27:36.:27:38.

But the more exercise you have beyond was even better.

:27:39.:27:49.

Of course, physical exercise isn't the only way

:27:50.:27:50.

And mental health charities say other factors, such

:27:51.:27:56.

as what we eat and drink, and keeping our brains stimulated,

:27:57.:27:59.

Newcastle are back in the Premier League after beating

:28:00.:28:08.

The victory sealed the final automatic promotion spot,

:28:09.:28:14.

Our sports correspondent, Katie Gornall, reports.

:28:15.:28:22.

It won't rank as his greatest achievement, but Rafa Benitez,

:28:23.:28:27.

a Champions League winning manager, has done what was expected of him

:28:28.:28:32.

and taken Newcastle back to where they feel they belong.

:28:33.:28:36.

As with much of United's season, last night was not

:28:37.:28:40.

A Preston equaliser in the first half threatened

:28:41.:28:42.

But this time, Newcastle held their nerve with Atsu's

:28:43.:28:46.

composed finish setting them on their way to a crushing victory.

:28:47.:28:53.

But no sooner had promotion been secured, the manager was unclear

:28:54.:28:55.

But I am really pleased here, very happy and very proud

:28:56.:29:04.

Hopefully, we can put the base in to do something that will be

:29:05.:29:15.

Newcastle United have had no shortage of heroes to worship

:29:16.:29:19.

over the years and now they have another one in Rafa Benitez.

:29:20.:29:22.

Although whether or not he is the man to finally wake this

:29:23.:29:25.

sleeping giant of a football club could depend on what

:29:26.:29:27.

This was a squad put together to get out of the Championship.

:29:28.:29:33.

To give them credit, they have done that.

:29:34.:29:35.

Whether they would compete in the Premier League,

:29:36.:29:36.

I think there's a lot of questions there.

:29:37.:29:40.

The manager knows just what needs doing, and ideally,

:29:41.:29:42.

listening to the fans, I think they want six or seven

:29:43.:29:45.

players to go straight into the Premier League starting

:29:46.:29:47.

line-up and hopefully the manager is given the opportunity to do that.

:29:48.:29:50.

Now Rafa Benitez must persuade the club's notoriously

:29:51.:29:53.

challenging owner, Mike Ashley, to back him in the transfer market.

:29:54.:29:56.

A year after they were relegated, the biggest test could lie ahead.

:29:57.:30:00.

The Olympic cycling champions Jason and Laura Kenny have been to

:30:01.:30:17.

Buckingham Palace to receive CBEs. Jason Kenny won six Olympic titles,

:30:18.:30:23.

Laura Kenny has won four. They have both been named in the latest squad

:30:24.:30:30.

for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Earlier in the year Laura announced

:30:31.:30:34.

she was pregnant with their first child. Congratulations to them.

Second day of winter weather. This is coming from the Highlands. It is

:30:39.:30:50.

a Highland cow. I will move out of the way! Gorgeous face. Fine weather

:30:51.:30:55.

around as well. Plenty of sunshine. So many of us woke up to a crystal

:30:56.:31:03.

clear blue skies across the UK. The wintry showers will now make their

:31:04.:31:08.

way down. Folks in the south. To feel the chill with the Arctic air

:31:09.:31:13.

setting in. Overall today will be the coldest looking at the country

:31:14.:31:18.

as far as temperatures go and the chance of catching showers. Showers

:31:19.:31:22.

reaching the South coast. Most will be of rain but there will be sweet

:31:23.:31:25.

on high ground. Flashes of lightning. -- sleet. Most frequent

:31:26.:31:35.

and with some snow across the upland areas certainly in Scotland, the

:31:36.:31:39.

north-east of England and the North York Moors and even in the

:31:40.:31:42.

south-west. They will continue this evening and overnight. Eastern areas

:31:43.:31:47.

catching the wintry showers. The West, lighter winds, clearer skies,

:31:48.:31:53.

a touch of frost. This morning was really nippy. Many areas were below

:31:54.:31:59.

freezing. Tomorrow as well, frost around. A bit of an East - West

:32:00.:32:05.

split tomorrow. Still under the influence of the colder air. Western

:32:06.:32:13.

areas, fewer showers around and sunshine. Still showers mostly of

:32:14.:32:18.

rain in Northern Ireland and north-western parts of Scotland.

:32:19.:32:22.

This is the jet stream for Thursday, still coming from the North, the jet

:32:23.:32:25.

stream carries the weather, so clearly the weather coming in just

:32:26.:32:31.

about from the north. It will not be warming up in a hurry on Thursday

:32:32.:32:35.

but you will start to feel a bit of a difference because we are getting

:32:36.:32:39.

more of an Atlantic influence. Temperatures back into double

:32:40.:32:43.

figures. The jet stream pushes out towards the east and weakens. This

:32:44.:32:47.

jet stream pushes the weather from the south-west and that is much

:32:48.:32:53.

milder. On Friday, we will start to feel things warming up with sunshine

:32:54.:32:58.

and temperatures could be back into mid teens. It will feel almost

:32:59.:33:03.

tropical that today. The bank led a weekend is not far away, looks as

:33:04.:33:08.

though Saturday will be bright, dry. -- the bank holiday weekend. If you

:33:09.:33:13.

live in the south-west, possible rain on Sunday. The good news,

:33:14.:33:15.

turning milder. A reminder of our main

:33:16.:33:17.

story this lunchtime. Labour says EU citizens could still

:33:18.:33:26.

come to Britain after Brexit if they have a guaranteed job offer.

:33:27.:33:29.

That's all from the BBC News at One, so it's goodbye from me.
