Emmerson Mnangagwa is sworn in, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:09
and promises to rebuild the country,
and repair its economy. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:19
I swear that, as president of
Republic of Zimbabwe... | 0:00:19 | 0:00:25
In front of tens of thousands
of people, he commits to restoring | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
unity and holding fresh
elections next year. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
We should never remain
hostages of our past. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:37
I thus humbly appeal to all of us
that we let bygones be bygones. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:46
We will have the latest from Harare. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51

Theresa May is back in Brussels -
she says it's everyone's | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
responsibility to advance the Brexit
negotiations, so trade | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
can be discussed. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
What I'm clear about is that we must
step forward together. This is for | 0:01:00 | 0:01:06
both the UK and the European Union
to move onto the next stage. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09

Good afternoon and welcome
to the BBC News at One. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Zimbabwe has a new President. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:27
Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in this
morning in a packed stadium | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
in the capital Harare. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
It follows the dramatic
departure of Robert Mugabe, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
after 37 years in power. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:40
President Mnangagwa told the crowd
of 60,000 that he vowed | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
to serve all citizens,
and said corruption must end. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:49
For decades, Emmerson Mnangagwa has
been shoulder-to-shoulder | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
with Robert Mugabe as one
of his closest aides. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
He was the country's spymaster
during the 1980s civil conflict, | 0:02:54 | 0:03:01
in which thousands of civilians
were killed, although he has denied | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
any role in the massacres. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
The man nicknamed 'the Crocodile'
because of his ruthlessness | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
was also accused of masterminding
attacks on opposition supporters | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
after the election in 2008. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
Ben Brown is in Harare. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:20
Yes, the inauguration ceremony took
place a few hours ago but people, as | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
you can see, still in this stadium
here on the outskirts of Harare, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
just enjoying the party. The
atmosphere has been electric and | 0:03:27 | 0:03:31
euphoric, and when it came to the
inaugural address from the brand-new | 0:03:31 | 0:03:37
president of Zimbabwe, many people
here said it was absolutely | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
inspiring. It was also inclusive, he
said, we are all in this together. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
He said that democratic elections
next year would go ahead, he | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
promised to create | 0:03:49 | 0:04:00
jobs and stop corruption, and even
some of his opponents who were here | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
in the stadium to watch the speech
said it was statesman-like and | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
inspirational. In short, just what
Zimbabwe was looking for. John | 0:04:09 | 0:04:11
Donnison reports on the events so
far. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:12 | |
A new dawn for Zimbabwe. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
And a day to be up early. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
People cramming onto buses towards
the country's National Stadium. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Outside, a mood of celebration. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:24
I, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa... | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
Millions of Zimbabweans this week
have been celebrating the end | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
of the Mugabe regime. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
But, after being sworn in,
the new president gave a remarkably | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
warm tribute to the man
he ousted from power. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
To me, personally, he remains a
father, mentor, comrades in arms, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:46
and my leader. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
We thus say thank you to him
and trust that our history | 0:04:51 | 0:04:57
will grant him his proper place
and accord him his deserved stature | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
as one of the founding fathers
and leaders of our nation. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:09
But he said now was the time
to look to the future. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
Whilst we cannot change the past,
there is a lot we can do | 0:05:12 | 0:05:19
in the present and the future
to give our nation a different, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
positive direction. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:28
As we do so, we should never remain
hostages of our past. I thus humbly | 0:05:28 | 0:05:35
appeal to all of us that we let
bygones be bygones. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
The crowd lapped it up. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
I just want to say to our new
president, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa, we | 0:05:43 | 0:05:49
are very happy, and I would like to
say to the general, Mr Chua manga, | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
thank you so much. Thank you so
much! Thank you so much! | 0:05:53 | 0:05:59
Many in this country have known no
other leader than Robert Mugabe. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:05
So what changes do people want? We
are expecting a lot from the new | 0:06:05 | 0:06:11
president, we expect him to deal
with issues of corruption, issues of | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
unemployment, and also issues of
health. The new president has | 0:06:15 | 0:06:26
promised democratic elections will
go ahead next year. But the | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
opposition wanting to do things
properly. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
I want him to realise
that we are all Zimbabweans. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
He must not ignore us. We want
parties that are respected in | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
Zimbabwe. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
Emmerson Mnangagwa was
Robert Mugabe's right-hand man, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
a key ally in decades
of oppressive rule. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:53
But, at least for today,
people were prepared to believe this | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
was not about continuity,
but change. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
John Donnison, BBC News. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
Let's get some reaction from one of
the spectators, one of the 60,000 | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
people packed into this stadium.
What did you think of that speech | 0:07:06 | 0:07:11
from the new president? It was very
inspiring because we got the | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
opportunities that we are going to
have jobs, and that is one thing I | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
was waiting to hear. Also they are
going to fight corruption, which is | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
one thing that was drowning of as a
nation. So, for me, this has been a | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
new start, a new beginning, and
cannot wait to see my children, my | 0:07:28 | 0:07:36
grandchildren, and all the future
generations that had no brighter | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
future and now I am very optimistic
there is going to be a brighter | 0:07:39 | 0:07:45
future for Zimbabwe. Do you think he
will keep his promises? For now, I | 0:07:45 | 0:07:50
think everyone will be, their eyes
will be on him such that I don't | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
think he will repeat the same
mistakes. I think, for now, we are | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
good. We have to be hopeful, because
once we are not hopeful, that will | 0:07:59 | 0:08:08
get negative responses, so for us,
we are happy with Emmerson Mnangagwa | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
as our president for now. Thank you
very much indeed. As you can see | 0:08:12 | 0:08:17
here, they are partying and dancing
in celebration of the fact that they | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
have a new president. He said, let
bygones be bygones. He wants no | 0:08:21 | 0:08:27
retribution, no revenge. But, of
course, Zimbabwe will be waiting to | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
see whether he does keep his
promises. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Jane, back to do. Then, thank you,
Ben Brown in Harare. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
Theresa May will meet the President
of the European Council Donald Tusk | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
in Brussels later. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:42
It will be the first time they've
met since the Prime Minister secured | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
the backing of her Cabinet
to increase Britain's divorce | 0:08:45 | 0:08:47
payment from the EU. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:48
The summit will address
the EU's relationship | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
with its eastern neighbours,
but discussions on the fringes | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
will focus on Brexit. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:54
Adam Fleming reports from Brussels. | 0:08:54 | 0:09:02
She's here to talk about helping
the EU's eastern neighbours. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
The Prime Minister is also
trying to give a boost | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
to the Brexit process. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:08
These negotiations are continuing,
but what I'm clear about is | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
that we must step forward together. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
This is for both the UK
and the European Union to move | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
on to the next stage. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
That next stage is talks
about the future relationship | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
with the UK, but EU leaders
won't talk about trade until Britain | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
answers some big questions
about its departure, | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
such as how it will avoid customs
checks on the Irish border. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:36
We're focused on a credible road
map, or the parameters at least | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
for a credible road map, to ensure
that we don't have a hard border | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
on the island of Ireland again that
not only undermines trade but, | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
more importantly, undermines
the normality on the island | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
of Ireland that has been the very
basis of a successful peace process | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
for the last 20 years. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:52
The president of Romania and his EU
colleagues won't move | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
without money, either. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:56
They want the UK to make specific
written commitments about how | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
it intends to live up
to its financial obligations. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:08
The Cabinet has, in theory, agreed
to make a more generous offer, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
although earlier this week
Downing Street dismissed | 0:10:11 | 0:10:12
reports that could be
a sum worth £40 billion. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
The Prime Minister won't talk
precise numbers as she hobnobs | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
with her counterparts. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
This is about small steps
in a bigger diplomatic dance that | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
will go on for weeks. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
I will meet the British Prime
Minister on 4th December | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
and then we'll see if there has been
sufficient progress. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
Are you at all confident
progress will be made? | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
Yes. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:37 | |
And the EU has other
things on its mind. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
Chancellor Merkel of Germany
is finding it hard to form | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
a coalition government at home. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
There's a political
crisis brewing in Dublin. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Are these distractions
or opportunities for Britain? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
For the Prime Minister,
the meeting that matters today | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
is with the president
of the European Council, | 0:10:51 | 0:10:53
Donald Tusk. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:58
He'll chair the summit in December
which will decide whether the Brexit | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
process takes a giant leap forward. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
Let's get the latest from Adam in
Brussels. As you alluded to there, | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
these are extraordinary times for a
lot of countries now, Adam? | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
Yes, the summit is meant to be about
helping the EU's eastern neighbours, | 0:11:15 | 0:11:20
it has been dominated by other
things instead. The meeting will | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
happen around 3:30pm your time,
between Theresa May and Donald Tusk, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:30
and it is important but just a small
step in the diplomatic process that | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
will go on to the next few weeks
where they are trying to solve | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
remaining problems between the EU
and UK. There are issues outstanding | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
on the rights of EU nationals living
at the UK, about the Northern Irish | 0:11:39 | 0:11:44
border, about how bad is handled,
and a big issue outstanding which, | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
as I mentioned in that piece, is the
money. What is fascinating is when | 0:11:48 | 0:11:52
you look around this massive EU
press room, half the journalists on | 0:11:52 | 0:11:57
this site are glued to Twitter to
find out if Germany will get a new | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
Government. The journalists on the
other half are glued to Twitter to | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
find out if Ireland is going to lose
its government. So there are lots of | 0:12:04 | 0:12:09
reminders the Brexit process is not
just governed by what happened in | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
meetings between the British Prime
Minister and the president | 0:12:13 | 0:12:25
of the European Council, it is
governed by lots of other factors as | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
well and all of those factors will
come together in a big finale in | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
this building in about three weeks'
time when there is an EU summit on | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
the 14th and 15th of December where
the crucial decision will be made, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
has there been enough progress in
the first phase of talks about | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
divorce to move onto the next stage,
about the future relationship | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
between the EU and the UK.
Adam Fleming, thank you. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
Oscar Pistorius has had his prison
sentence for killing his | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
girlfriend more than doubled. | 0:12:56 | 0:12:57
Prosecutors had argued
that the original six-year term | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
for shooting Reeva Steenkamp
was 'shockingly light'. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:00
The former Olympic and Paralympic
athlete must now serve 13 | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
years and five months. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:04
Milton Nkosi is in Johannesburg. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05
Explain more about the developments?
Yes, what we saw today was the | 0:13:05 | 0:13:13
supreme Court of Appeal overturning
that six-year sentence and | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
increasing it all the way up to 13.5
years for Oscar Pistorius. The | 0:13:15 | 0:13:21
family of Reeva Steenkamp, who was
shot on Valentine's Day in 2013, has | 0:13:21 | 0:13:26
already said that they welcome this
change in sentencing, and said this | 0:13:26 | 0:13:32
shows that justice can be achieved
in South Africa. On the other hand, | 0:13:32 | 0:13:38
from the Oscar Pistorius family, his
brother Carl Pistorius tweeted three | 0:13:38 | 0:13:45
words, shattered, heartbroken,
gutted. That summed it up, really, | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
for the athlete, who is still behind
bars, and for his family and | 0:13:49 | 0:13:53
friends.
Milton, thank you, Milton Nkosi in | 0:13:53 | 0:13:59
Johannesburg. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
YouTube's system for reporting
sexualised comments left | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
on children's videos has not been
functioning properly | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
for more than a year. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:07
That's according to volunteer
moderators, who say there could be | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
up to 100,000 predatory accounts
leaving indecent comments. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
Companies including Mars,
Cadbury and Lidl have suspended | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
advertising on the site. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
YouTube says it reviews
the "vast majority" | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
of reports within 24 hours. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:20
Mike Wendling reports. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:24
These comments were left
on completely innocent | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
videos of young people,
emulating YouTube stars. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:34
But the simple fact
that they featured children | 0:14:34 | 0:14:35
attracts predatory comments. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
YouTube relies on users to report
illegal and inappropriate behaviour, | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
but BBC Trending has been told
of a flaw in that system. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:45
YouTube's volunteer moderators say
that not all information in public | 0:14:45 | 0:14:49
reports is getting to the company,
which can result in sexual comments | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
remaining on children's videos,
sometimes for months. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:56
We picked out 28 accounts which left
such comments and flagged them | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
using the public system. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:00
Over several weeks,
five were taken down. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:09
The rest stayed up,
until we identified ourselves | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
as journalists and provided YouTube
with the full list of | 0:15:11 | 0:15:13

Anne Longfield, the Children's
Commissioner for England, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
says something needs to be done. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:18
I am really, really
concerned that the public | 0:15:18 | 0:15:20
function of reporting
isn't seemingly working. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:22
It's something I will be writing
to YouTube about straightaway | 0:15:22 | 0:15:25
and I will want them to take
immediate action and have | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
that resolved within
literally a matter of hours. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:33
Children's charity the NSPCC wants
the Government to step | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
in, and major brands have begun
to pull advertising. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
What we'd encourage parents to do
is to have conversations | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
with their children about how
to stay safe online and for that | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
to be a regular part
of the conversation | 0:15:47 | 0:15:48
they have with children. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:49
Parents would ask children
how their day at school was. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
Ask about what they are doing
online and if they have | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
encountered any risks. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
The Government says it expects
online platforms to act swiftly | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
to remove offensive content. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
YouTube denied there is a technical
fault and told us... | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
YouTube says it recognises
it needs to do more, | 0:16:22 | 0:16:24
and has pledged to get
tougher on predators. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:29
The company says it has removed
hundreds of predatory accounts this | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
week alone and that it will disable
comments on videos | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
targeted by predators. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:35

Our media editor Amol Rajan is here. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:41
It is not the first time there have
been concerns about YouTube? Earlier | 0:16:41 | 0:16:46
this year there were concerns not
about material related to children | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
but about jihadists content. There
are two different stories, one is | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
commercial, where big brands who
advertise on YouTube, like Mars and | 0:16:54 | 0:17:01
Adidas, said they do not want
anything to do with YouTube when it | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
is a forum for sexual predators and
paedophiles. Another one, as in the | 0:17:04 | 0:17:10
report that, BBC trending finding
their mechanism, the system by which | 0:17:10 | 0:17:17
you can flag that something is
wrong, that is not working as it was | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
meant to for a year or so which
means that some things that were | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
meant to be taken down simply were
not. And the parent company is doing | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
what about a? We have been speaking
to senior people in the world of | 0:17:28 | 0:17:33
advertising and they say Google has
taken this seriously, they find this | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
abhorrent and in the last few months
have acted to try to take this stuff | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
down. They have disabled accounts
which should not be there, taken | 0:17:39 | 0:17:44
thousands of comments which should
not be online down as well and hired | 0:17:44 | 0:17:48
human moderators to prejudge whether
certain things should be online. But | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
a key point here is the sheer volume
of material online, 400 hours of | 0:17:52 | 0:17:57
video uploaded every minute, this
will be solved by machines rather | 0:17:57 | 0:18:01
than human beings and I'm afraid
this is a war without end. Amol | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04

The Friday morning commute from
Essex. Bargain hunters in every | 0:19:23 | 0:19:29
carriage shopping on the move. I've
been shopping online this morning. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
Already? I managed to get a discount
for my son for a monitor. I bought a | 0:19:32 | 0:19:40
Dyson. It seems to be getting bigger
and bigger, it's mental. I've been | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
thinking about it for the past week,
waiting for today, and the first | 0:19:44 | 0:19:49
opportunity I've got I've logged on.
It is 9am, but what most shops are | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
open but it is reckoned we will
already have quietly spent half £1 | 0:19:53 | 0:20:00
billion online. Those orders are
already on their way here at Amazon | 0:20:00 | 0:20:05
with robots moving thousands of
items from the shelves to the | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
pickers and they have been doing
deals all week and so too have many | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
others. Anything to get shoppers to
spend. Personal finances are under | 0:20:13 | 0:20:18
pressure and consumer confidence is
beginning to falter but this is an | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
important time of the year with
black Friday the starting gun for | 0:20:22 | 0:20:26
Christmas and retailers will be
hoping it spurs consumers to spend. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
That is what they are banking on at
this small electronics business in | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
Cambridge also they have bought half
£1 million worth of stock to sell, | 0:20:33 | 0:20:38
exciting bit nerve-racking as well.
If we don't operate in black Friday | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
they will buy off somebody of that
is not an option, we have to cell on | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
Black Friday. It is nerve-racking,
the more people rely on Black | 0:20:46 | 0:20:51
Friday, the more people buy and
consume is wet, the more you sit | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
there in the weeks leading up to it
thinking, is it going to happen this | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
year? But the boss of this clothing
chain is not taking part. For the | 0:20:59 | 0:21:05
high Street it is bonkers. I can't
think of a better word to describe | 0:21:05 | 0:21:10
it. All it is doing is moving sales
from December into November, it is | 0:21:10 | 0:21:15
not growing the market and
everything is having to be sold at a | 0:21:15 | 0:21:19
reduced margins. And the deals are
everywhere, on a high street that | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
feels it is permanently on the sale.
Like it or loathe it, Black Friday | 0:21:22 | 0:21:27
is here to stay. Emma Simpson

A new therapy which allows people
with schizophrenia to talk | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
to a computer representation
of voices they hear in their head, | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
could help them cope better
with hallucinations. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
A trial of 150 people suggested that
confronting an avatar was helpful. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
Our Health Correspondent,
James Gallagher, explains. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:28
Stupid. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
Look at you. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:40
Threatening voices fill the heads
of schizophrenia patients. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
A quarter of them can't even escape
them with medication. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
Stupid. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:46
A new experimental therapy
is bringing patients face to face | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
with their imaginary tormentors. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
You're pathetic. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
You're rubbish. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:56
You're a waste of space. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:57
This avatar is being
controlled by psychiatrists | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
at the Maudsley Hospital in London. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:00
They have worked with the patient
to match the voice. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
He wouldn't say yes
and he wouldn't say no either. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
You just tell me which is the best. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
And the look of their
hallucinations. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:08
Patients then spent six
sessions learning how | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
to stand up to their avatar. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
Tell him you don't want to hear this
rubbish any more when he comes | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
in with his usual statements. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:18
You're a waste of space. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
Go away. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:24
You're pathetic. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:25
Professor Tom Craig developed
the therapy and has done | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
trials on 150 people. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:32
He said it produced rapid
and lasting improvements | 0:23:32 | 0:23:34
with patients having
fewer frightening hallucinations. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:36
I think it's the business
of bringing it from a voice | 0:23:36 | 0:23:43
that is detached and you have no
control over, into this experience | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
that is immediate and you control
so you get power and it loses power. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:51
Experts say the trial,
published in the Lancet Psychiatry, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
is impressive but add that patients
will still need to take medication. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:58
This treatment is specifically
designed for those with treatment | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
resistant auditory verbal
hallucinations, or voices, | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
so you wouldn't be looking
to provide it routinely I guess | 0:24:05 | 0:24:10
unless patients wanted
this kind of approach. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
I think the other rider to consider
is that it is quite a high-tech | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
approach which thus far is only
available in a couple | 0:24:15 | 0:24:18
of centres in the UK. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:21
Making an avatar of your imaginary
voices is still experimental | 0:24:21 | 0:24:26
therapy. Further trials are needed
to see if it could become a powerful | 0:24:26 | 0:24:31
new way of treating schizophrenia.

There's been success for England's
bowlers on the second day | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
The tourists, who were all out

After a patient opening day,
the Ashes were about to hit | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
the fast forward button. | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
Long queues outside the Gabba
and at first England also | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
played the waiting game. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:06
For an hour and a half
they were calm, composed. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:08
A 50 for Dawid Malan. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:09
What could possibly go wrong? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
Well, pretty much everything
as it turned out. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
Malan's swish sparking a collapse
in the grand English | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
tradition, losing 6-56. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:25
Moeen Ali next to go as Nathan Lyon
sent the visitors spinning. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:28
Chris Woakes was utterly bamboozled,
Jake Ball brilliantly | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
caught by David Warner. | 0:25:30 | 0:25:32
And by the time Stuart Broad
holed out, England hadn't | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
even lasted the morning,
all out for 302. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:43
Well, lunch will be tasting pretty
good for these Australian | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
fans after that horrible
collapse by England. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
Six wickets in barely an hour have
transformed the mood of this match. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:55
But that mood was about
to swing once again. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
A chance and gone! | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
As the Gabba's glee was silenced. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
Stuart Broad with the breakthrough
before a bit of Moeen magic, | 0:26:02 | 0:26:06
trapping Usman Khawaja and suddenly
it was Australia's turn to tumble. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:12
Warner inexplicably serving
up catching practice. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
And although Peter Handscomb
thought he had survived, | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
the video umpire decided otherwise. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:22
Australia four down
and in deep trouble. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:24
But they recovered thanks
to an unbeaten half-century | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
from captain Steve Smith to cap
a day of fluctuating, | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
fascinating fortunes. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
We feel we're in a decent position. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
I think if we can come out
in the morning, get a good night's | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
sleep and a bit of rest and come
at them hard in the morning, | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
if we nick couple out and you're
into the likes of Starc and Cummins, | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
I think that's a good
position for us to be in. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
The match then perfectly poised
in an enthralling start | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
to this Ashes series. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:50
Andy Swiss, BBC News, Brisbane. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:56
Now, most of us probably think
of him as a star striker responsible | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
for many an England goal,
but it seems Michael Owen's sporting | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
talent extends beyond football. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:03
Since retiring from the beautiful
game, he's become a successful | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
racehorse breeder,
and this lunchtime he's | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
been making his debut
as a jockey at Ascot. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
Joe Wilson reports. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:17
Approaching on four legs come
unmistakably a racehorse but cube is | 0:27:17 | 0:27:22
the human being on board? Recognise
him? -- who is also it may be more | 0:27:22 | 0:27:30
recognisable doing this come almost
a furlong from goal in the 98 World | 0:27:30 | 0:27:34
Cup and a sprinters finish. Michael
Owen has scored a wonderful goal! | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
When you have scored over 300 times
you need a new goal and horse racing | 0:27:39 | 0:27:45
became Michael Owen's business in
retirement. Owning horses in one | 0:27:45 | 0:27:53
thing, riding them, initially he
thought it might have been easy. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:57
Dressed in the suck at Ascot it was
all very real. This was just a | 0:27:57 | 0:28:01
charity race but he had trained hard
and lost a lot of weight. Calder | 0:28:01 | 0:28:07
Prince has come through to have the
lead under Michael Owen. There he | 0:28:07 | 0:28:11
was, closer to the rails, the dark
blue colours on board Calder Prince | 0:28:11 | 0:28:16
and as they turned for home there
was a chance to win and now surely | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
these sportsmen's instinct would
kick in but if he had the world for | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
victory lacked the expertise as a
horse called Golden Wedding clicked | 0:28:24 | 0:28:34
on. Second place in a highly
respectable on debut and it gets you | 0:28:34 | 0:28:39
a place in the parade ring where
they hand out the recognition. In | 0:28:39 | 0:28:46
front of esteemed spectators,
Michael Owen had done himself | 0:28:46 | 0:28:48
justice so will there be another
race as a jockey? Hopefully, he said | 0:28:48 | 0:28:53
cautiously. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:56
At the age of 83, Tom Baker has
returned to the Tardis. | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
He's filmed part of a Dr Who episode
which was never finished. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:03
He donned his trademark long stripy
scarf and returned to BBC | 0:29:03 | 0:29:06
Television Centre to shoot a scene
from an episode which was abandoned | 0:29:06 | 0:29:09
because of a strike. | 0:29:09 | 0:29:10
Our Entertainment Correspondent,
Colin Paterson, reports. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:20
Shada, a doctor who stole it would
start to be filmed in 1979 but had | 0:29:20 | 0:29:27
to be abandoned halfway through due
to an engineering strike. There have | 0:29:27 | 0:29:32
been many attempts at finishing it
novels, audio plays, even a VHS | 0:29:32 | 0:29:38
version with Tom Brake explaining
what happened in the scenes which | 0:29:38 | 0:29:42
were never completed. -- Tom Baker.
Doctor, your mind shall be mine. I'm | 0:29:42 | 0:29:51
not mad about your tailor! For the
version released today, members of | 0:29:51 | 0:29:57
the original cast including Tom
Baker recorded the actual script to | 0:29:57 | 0:30:02
go with animated versions of the
missing parts. And what has got fans | 0:30:02 | 0:30:11
particularly excited is for the
conclusion, Tom Baker went back to | 0:30:11 | 0:30:18
BBC Television Centre, stepped onto
the set from 1979 and filmed two | 0:30:18 | 0:30:23
lines of dialogue. He had no qualms
about returning to the role. I think | 0:30:23 | 0:30:29
it was that probably it never left
me and that is why I can't stay away | 0:30:29 | 0:30:33
from it. It was a lovely time of my
life. I loved doing Doctor Who | 0:30:33 | 0:30:37
because it was life to me. Tom Baker
are proving you don't have to be a | 0:30:37 | 0:30:42
Time Lord to travel back to the
1970s. Wonderful. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:49
Time for a look at the weather. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:51
Here's Tomasz Schafernaker. | 0:30:51 | 0:30:53
We have been getting a lot of snowy
pictures in the last few days, | 0:30:55 | 0:30:59
mostly from the Highlands, it is not
quite cold enough for snow in other | 0:30:59 | 0:31:02
parts of the UK but this was a very
pretty seen, Dalwhinnie in the | 0:31:02 | 0:31:07
Highlands. And another one here from
the Highlands. And another from the | 0:31:07 | 0:31:19
Highlands, you can get the message,
a lot of wintry scenes up in the | 0:31:19 | 0:31:25
mountainous regions but for most of
us more than anything it will be a | 0:31:25 | 0:31:29
couple of showers and maybe some
sleet in parts of Wales and the | 0:31:29 | 0:31:34
Moors but for many others it is a
crisp afternoon, the best epicentre | 0:31:34 | 0:31:39
in eastern and southern areas. You
can see the showers in Scotland and | 0:31:39 | 0:31:43
the temperatures will be dipping
like last night. This is what it | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
looks like around 6pm, temperatures
already not far from freezing in the | 0:31:46 | 0:31:55
lowlands of Scotland, in Belfast and
even in the Midlands only four or | 0:31:55 | 0:32:01
five so very nippy Friday evening.
On the south coast, about 6 degrees | 0:32:01 | 0:32:09
Celsius so chilly weather which is
here to stay for the next few days. | 0:32:09 | 0:32:14
Let's have a look at this evening
and overnight, showers continuing in | 0:32:14 | 0:32:18
Scotland, some in the north-west of
England and Wales, possibly one or | 0:32:18 | 0:32:22
two across the moors as well but the
east and south will be staying | 0:32:22 | 0:32:26
clear. Even in central London, only
2 degrees. Further north with the | 0:32:26 | 0:32:34
showers, the risk of iciness in
Scotland and Northern Ireland and | 0:32:34 | 0:32:37
maybe the Pennines and Wales. Look
at the cold on Saturday, reaching as | 0:32:37 | 0:32:43
far south as northern Spain and
Portugal, really digging down into | 0:32:43 | 0:32:48
Western Europe and again on Saturday
we will see more of those showers | 0:32:48 | 0:32:52
coming in on a cold north-westerly
wind into Scotland and showers in | 0:32:52 | 0:32:58
north-west England as well but for
most of us are cold and crisp day. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:01
It might be around five or 6 degrees
briefly in the afternoon but will | 0:33:01 | 0:33:06
feel closer to freezing particularly
in the north. A chilly wind. It will | 0:33:06 | 0:33:11
start off cold again on Sunday, a
lot of fine and right weather but | 0:33:11 | 0:33:16
look at the weather systems in the
Atlantic coming into the north-west | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
of the British Isles. The second
half of Sunday into Monday it is | 0:33:19 | 0:33:23
going to turn a bit less cold but
overall the weather | 0:33:23 | 0:33:28 |
