Four people found dead at a home in County Durham. Three of the victims | :00:13. | :00:19.
were women, there was a shotgun next to a man's body. I would like | :00:19. | :00:23.
to reassure our communities that the police are in control of this | :00:24. | :00:28.
incident. At this moment, we are looking for no-one else in relation | :00:28. | :00:33.
to this inquiry. The breast implant scare - a | :00:33. | :00:36.

Good evening. The former mining village of Horden is in shock today | :01:10. | :01:13.
after police found four bodies at a home late last night. The victims | :01:14. | :01:18.
who were all related were three women and a man who was licensed to | :01:18. | :01:22.
own six firearms. It is thought one of the weapons was found next to | :01:22. | :01:25.
his body. Three other people managed to escape the shooting | :01:25. | :01:32.
including a 19-year-old who jumped from an upstairs window. | :01:32. | :01:38.
This small village in County Durham had celebrated the New Year and | :01:38. | :01:43.
hours later it found itself at the centre of an investigation into | :01:43. | :01:47.
four deaths. A number of emergency calls were made, all reporting | :01:47. | :01:52.
sounds of gunshots at the house in Greenside Avenue in Horden. | :01:52. | :01:55.
Officers arrived just before midnight and found the bodies of | :01:55. | :02:00.
three women and a man who was in his 40s, next to him was a shotgun. | :02:00. | :02:04.
All four were related. At this stage, we are not looking for | :02:04. | :02:08.
anyone else. It is very early in the investigation. My priority is | :02:08. | :02:12.
to identify the individuals in the house and I am working closely with | :02:12. | :02:16.
friends and family to establish that. I need to know what's gone on | :02:16. | :02:21.
inside that house and that will take the rest of today and tomorrow | :02:21. | :02:26.
to complete all the inquiries. It's believed other people were in | :02:26. | :02:32.
the house and one 19-year-old woman escaped from an upstairs window. | :02:32. | :02:36.
Although the police are reassuring locals they aren't looking for | :02:36. | :02:39.
anyone else, there is still a sense of fear and the close-knit | :02:39. | :02:46.
community is shocked. It never happens here, does it? Four deaths? | :02:46. | :02:50.
You can't believe it. I'm shocked that it's happened on our doorstep. | :02:50. | :02:54.
It is a family matter, what we have been told over the news. I don't | :02:54. | :03:01.
suppose it is any threat to us. It is a big shock. I am scared. | :03:02. | :03:06.
was at work all the time, but she seemed to be all right. I used to | :03:06. | :03:12.
talk to her. I didn't know of any trouble. One of the women has been | :03:12. | :03:16.
named locally as Susan McGoldrick and the man is believed to be | :03:16. | :03:21.
Michael Atherton, a taxi driver who held six firearms licences. Three | :03:21. | :03:26.
for shotguns and three for the more strictly-controlled Section 1 | :03:26. | :03:30.
firearms. At this stage, officers don't know if any of the legally- | :03:30. | :03:36.
held weapons were used in last night's shooting. | :03:36. | :03:43.
Fiona Trott is in Horden for us tonight. What are the details that | :03:43. | :03:46.
have been emerging through the day? The most important thing that I | :03:46. | :03:50.
think that has come to light today is the fact we have learned the | :03:50. | :03:54.
history of one of the residents that lived in that house. He has | :03:54. | :03:59.
been named as Michael Atherton. We know that one of those residents | :03:59. | :04:04.
had a firearms licence for three shotguns and three other types of | :04:04. | :04:08.
firearms. People here in Horden this evening are saying that they | :04:08. | :04:12.
have heard that the shootings took place and then the person that | :04:12. | :04:16.
fired the gun turned the gun on themselves. Now that has not been | :04:17. | :04:20.
confirmed by the police. But if that is the case, what police have | :04:20. | :04:25.
to do this evening is scrutinise what checks were taking place | :04:25. | :04:31.
before to look at this man's history and what firearms were | :04:31. | :04:36.
inside that house. Thank you. A senior plastic surgeon who is | :04:36. | :04:39.
advising the Government on the safety of breast implants has said | :04:39. | :04:43.
thousands of women may need surgery to remove them. Tim Goodacre say it | :04:43. | :04:48.
is failure rate of implants made by the French company PIP was | :04:48. | :04:54.
unacceptable. The saga over faulty breast | :04:54. | :04:57.
implants has meant an anxious festive season for thousands of | :04:57. | :05:00.
British women. The New Year is bringing more uncertainty with | :05:00. | :05:06.
claims from one UK clinic that 7% of implants made by the French | :05:06. | :05:12.
company PIP have ruptured. But seven times higher than the figure | :05:12. | :05:17.
acknowledged by the Government. One of the surgeons investigating the | :05:17. | :05:22.
scandal says all of them should be removed as a precaution. I would be | :05:22. | :05:25.
suggesting to the Department of Health that that rupture rate is | :05:25. | :05:30.
unacceptable and a programme should be put into place to remove these | :05:30. | :05:37.
devices. That is an open-and-shut case, if that is the data. It is an | :05:37. | :05:41.
opinion which has the backing of many of those who had the PIP | :05:41. | :05:45.
implants. This woman certainly doesn't want to take any chances. | :05:45. | :05:48.
I'm incredibly concerned about the impact these implants could be | :05:48. | :05:56.
having on my health. I haven't stopped worrying about it. I want | :05:56. | :05:59.
them replaced. PIP, which was closed down last year, was using | :05:59. | :06:03.
non-medical silicone in the implants. The French government has | :06:03. | :06:06.
already recommended they are removed from women who have them | :06:06. | :06:10.
and has said it will pay for the necessary operations. Here, the | :06:10. | :06:13.
Department of Health believes there isn't any danger unless the | :06:13. | :06:17.
implants rupture. It has set up a review panel to examine the safety | :06:17. | :06:22.
data. That panel is due to report later this week. Women with the | :06:23. | :06:26.
sub-standard implants will be waiting anxiously to hear its | :06:26. | :06:30.
findings. A man has appeared before | :06:30. | :06:34.
magistrates in Manchester charged with murdering Anuj Bidve. Mr Bidve | :06:34. | :06:39.
was shot in the head in Salford in the early hours of Boxing Day. | :06:39. | :06:43.
Kiaran Stapleton, who is 20, was remanded in custody. He told the | :06:43. | :06:48.
court his name was "Psycho Stapleton". Tonight, one week on | :06:48. | :06:52.
from the shooting, a vigil is about to take place in Salford close to | :06:52. | :06:56.
where it happened. Nick Ravenscroft is there for us now. There's been | :06:56. | :07:03.
quite a reaction to this murder locally? George, because people who | :07:03. | :07:08.
live around here didn't know Anuj Bidve, then they don't feel his | :07:08. | :07:13.
loss personally. Yet, the fact that a stranger who was merely passing | :07:13. | :07:16.
through this community could be shot dead has shocked many people | :07:16. | :07:21.
deeply. In fact, some people fear that the crime may have cast a | :07:21. | :07:25.
taint over the entire community and so tonight's vigil here, which is | :07:25. | :07:29.
due to take place shortly after 6.00, is their way not only of | :07:29. | :07:33.
paying their respects but also of distancing themselves from that | :07:33. | :07:37.
crime. Earlier today, a man appeared in court, a local man, | :07:37. | :07:40.
accused of the crime. He wasn't required to enter a plea of guilty | :07:40. | :07:49.
or not guilty, merely to confirm his name to which he replied, | :07:49. | :07:55.
""Psycho Stapleton"." In India, officers from Greater | :07:55. | :08:01.
Manchester Police have met Mr Bidve's parents. They have | :08:02. | :08:06.
criticised the British and Indian authorities for their handling of | :08:06. | :08:09.
the case. Andrew North met the family at their home in the city of | :08:09. | :08:15.
Pune. His report contains some flash photography. | :08:15. | :08:20.
Remembering an only son. The parents of Anuj Bidve and his | :08:20. | :08:25.
grandmother still can't believe he is dead. A brilliant student, and a | :08:25. | :08:33.
Manchester United fan, his father tells me. And my best friend. | :08:33. | :08:43.
:08:43. | :08:44. | ||
is a big gap in my life. I cannot say more than this. They first | :08:44. | :08:48.
learnt he was dead from Facebook and asked why it took Greater | :08:48. | :08:52.
Manchester Police so long to call when they had his mobile or | :08:53. | :09:02.
cellphone. I am really very unhappy about this. Anuj was having his | :09:02. | :09:08.
cell along with him and in that cell my number, my family's numbers, | :09:08. | :09:13.
his mother's numbers were there. It could have been possible for the | :09:13. | :09:18.
police as well as the hospital authorities to contact us. | :09:18. | :09:24.
Criticisms the police had to answer themselves when they arrived. | :09:24. | :09:27.
Greater Manchester Police are at the family home offering their | :09:27. | :09:33.
condolences and trying to clear the air. Their presence has attracted a | :09:33. | :09:39.
large crowd. After two hours inside, officers left without comment. On | :09:39. | :09:44.
their way back to Britain. The country the Bidve family chose for | :09:44. | :09:52.
Anuj because there they thought he would be safe. | :09:52. | :09:55.
Here, the Prime Minister has said 2012 will be a difficult year for | :09:55. | :09:59.
millions worried about their jobs or struggling to pay the bills. But | :09:59. | :10:03.
in his New Year's message, David Cameron says the coalition is | :10:03. | :10:07.
determined to get Britain back up to strength. He also said the | :10:07. | :10:10.
Olympic Games and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee would provide | :10:10. | :10:17.
opportunities to showcase the country's traditions and talents. | :10:17. | :10:21.
The message from Downing Street this time last year was 2011 would | :10:21. | :10:25.
see Britain get back on its feet. In 2012, the Prime Minister accepts | :10:26. | :10:30.
that some are still struggling. search for work has become | :10:30. | :10:34.
difficult, particularly for young people. And rising prices have hit | :10:34. | :10:39.
household budgets. I get that. We are taking action on both fronts. I | :10:39. | :10:43.
know how difficult it will be to get through this. But I also know | :10:43. | :10:48.
that we will. And it is the state of the economy that may dictate the | :10:49. | :10:53.
Prime Minister's own fortunes in 2012. His colleagues in Europe have | :10:53. | :11:00.
warned of a difficult year ahead. Little surprise then that they are | :11:00. | :11:04.
cautious here, David Cameron says his Government's economic plans | :11:04. | :11:08.
have given some protection from the worst of those euro debt storms. We | :11:08. | :11:14.
have security, he says, for now. Reasons to be cheerful? Well, the | :11:14. | :11:17.
Olympic Games and the Diamond Jubilee are both in the diary. | :11:17. | :11:23.
we welcome the world to the best Olympics ever, and as? The 60th | :11:23. | :11:31.
year of -- and as in the 60th year of her reign we honour the Queen, | :11:31. | :11:36.
let us use these things as a mirror of ourselves, too, a mirror of the | :11:36. | :11:40.
nation. While the Prime Minister is promising his policies will tackle | :11:40. | :11:44.
excess in the city, Labour are demanding big changes to existing | :11:44. | :11:49.
plans. Instead of giving tax cuts to the banks, we would use the | :11:49. | :11:55.
proceeds of those monies to reduce tuition fees, we have said we would | :11:55. | :11:59.
use a repeat of a bank bonus tax to put in place a Youth Jobs Fund to | :11:59. | :12:04.
give many of the one million young people who are now out of work more | :12:04. | :12:08.
opportunities. No-one's under any illusions about the challenges of | :12:08. | :12:14.
2012. The debate will centre on how best to confront them. | :12:14. | :12:17.
Passenger groups have condemned new increases in rail fares. They go up | :12:17. | :12:22.
by an average of 5.9% today in England, Scotland and Wales. But | :12:22. | :12:26.
some commuters will find their season tickets increase by almost | :12:26. | :12:32.
11%. Rail passengers buying tickets | :12:32. | :12:35.
today will have noticed the difference. Others may only realise | :12:35. | :12:39.
how much extra they will pay when they return to work after the | :12:39. | :12:44.
Christmas break. The average rise for train travel is 5.9%, but some | :12:44. | :12:54.
:12:54. | :13:05. | ||
I think they are too expensive. You go abroad and you can travel by | :13:05. | :13:10.
rail much more cheaply. When it is not rush hour, it is fine. But when | :13:10. | :13:17.
you are paying for rush hour trains and you have to stand, no. Rising | :13:17. | :13:23.
rail fares will make extra demands on stretched household budgets. | :13:23. | :13:30.
Ticket prices are likely to go up further in future years. It is very | :13:30. | :13:36.
difficult to see how passengers can bear more of these fare rises. | :13:37. | :13:40.
Passenger numbers are going up so there is more and more coming into | :13:40. | :13:44.
the industry the whole time. That is what should be funding the | :13:44. | :13:47.
investment. Rail companies say investment is needed to fund better | :13:47. | :13:50.
services, improve stations, more trains and they argue the rising | :13:50. | :13:55.
costs are a result of a shift in how all that is paid for. Every | :13:55. | :13:59.
January, the public is being asked a question, who should pay for | :14:00. | :14:03.
running our railways - the taxpayer or the passenger? The answer that | :14:03. | :14:08.
the Government have given to that question is the taxpayer should | :14:08. | :14:12.
subsidise the cost less and the passenger should pay more. Whatever | :14:12. | :14:15.
the arguments on both sides, travellers dependent on the rail | :14:15. | :14:19.
network to get to and from work will have no choice but to pay the | :14:19. | :14:23.
extra. Football: With the top three having | :14:23. | :14:27.
