Good evening and welcome to the BBC news at six. | :01:39. | :01:42.
He'd been part of her family since she was a toddler but today Nathan | :01:43. | :01:47.
Matthews has been found guilty of kidnapping and murdering his 16 | :01:48. | :01:51.
His girlfriend Shauna Hoare, who'd always denied any involvement | :01:52. | :01:55.
in the killing, has been convicted of manslaughter. | :01:56. | :01:58.
Becky was kidnapped and suffocated in Bristol in February, her body was | :01:59. | :02:04.
stored in a shed less than 100 metres from her home. | :02:05. | :02:07.
On hearing the guilty verdicts, Becky's father and his wife, Nathan | :02:08. | :02:10.
Jon Kay is outside the court - you've been following | :02:11. | :02:15.
Yes, and I was in court as the verdicts were read out and members | :02:16. | :02:25.
of Becky's family were holding one another, shaking and sobbing as the | :02:26. | :02:28.
guilty verdicts were returned. One family member punched the air and | :02:29. | :02:34.
simply said, yes. Income Paris and Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare | :02:35. | :02:38.
showed absolutely no emotion as they stood in the dock. -- income Paris. | :02:39. | :02:43.
In a moment we will have an interview with the father and | :02:44. | :02:47.
stepmother of Becky Watts speaking for the first time since she was | :02:48. | :02:53.
killed. I should warn you that some of the details are disturbing. | :02:54. | :03:02.
Nathan Matthews claimed it was an accident but he did not mean to kill | :03:03. | :03:08.
his stepsister. Shauna Hoare, who was pregnant at the time, insisted | :03:09. | :03:13.
that she had nothing to do with it. But the jury did not believe them. | :03:14. | :03:17.
It took them just three hours to decide the pair had conspired to | :03:18. | :03:22.
kidnap 16-year-old Becky Watts and that they killed her in a sexually | :03:23. | :03:27.
motivated attack. Finally justice has been done for beautiful Becky. | :03:28. | :03:32.
After hearing weeks of harrowing evidence about how the schoolgirl | :03:33. | :03:35.
was killed, her family gave their reaction to today's verdict. Now the | :03:36. | :03:41.
formalities have been concluded we can begin the process of grieving | :03:42. | :03:46.
properly. And rebuilding our lives. Lives that can never be the same. | :03:47. | :03:56.
She was a beautiful, happy, funny, feisty, caring, loyal and witty | :03:57. | :04:02.
girl. She was like a tornado, hurricane and Sunbeam all at once. | :04:03. | :04:06.
She came into your life and made you feel alive. Listening, Becky's dad | :04:07. | :04:14.
Darren and his wife Angie. They now know that his daughter was murdered | :04:15. | :04:21.
by her son. When they married two years ago Becky was their young | :04:22. | :04:24.
bridesmaid. Nathan Matthews was the best man. And the other bridesmaid | :04:25. | :04:31.
was Shauna Hoare. It was the 19th of February this year when Matthews and | :04:32. | :04:35.
Shauna Hoare drove to Becky's house armed with a stun gun. Becky was | :04:36. | :04:40.
alone in her bedroom. A pathologist said that she was suffocated after | :04:41. | :04:45.
fighting for her life in a violent struggle. Matthews had been in the | :04:46. | :04:49.
Territorial Army and told the jury that he put the body in a suitcase | :04:50. | :04:53.
and then the couple drove back to their home two miles away. When they | :04:54. | :04:58.
got here Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare ordered a takeaway and watched | :04:59. | :05:03.
a comedy video on YouTube entitled Do You Want To Hide Her Body? They | :05:04. | :05:16.
bought a circular saw, tape, sax and cleaning products. When police | :05:17. | :05:20.
searched their home they found every room filled with junk and mass apart | :05:21. | :05:24.
from the bathroom which was spotlessly clean. This was where | :05:25. | :05:29.
Becky's body was dismembered. Her remains had been packaged into bags | :05:30. | :05:33.
and cases and hidden in a neighbours shared. The circumstances of the | :05:34. | :05:35.
case are horrific. -- in the shared to dismember human body is a very | :05:36. | :05:46.
unusual occurrence. For it to happen in these circumstances, after a | :05:47. | :05:54.
stepbrother kills his stepsister, is just despicable and brutal. The jury | :05:55. | :05:58.
heard that Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare had a shared sexual | :05:59. | :06:03.
interest in teenage girls and had exchanged messages about kidnapping | :06:04. | :06:08.
in the months before killing Becky. The pair will be sentenced on | :06:09. | :06:15.
Friday. Well, even though Becky Watts and Nathan Matthews officially | :06:16. | :06:19.
became stepbrother and step sister only a couple of years ago she had | :06:20. | :06:23.
grown up with him and known him for pretty much all of her life. Her | :06:24. | :06:28.
family have told us that her first word was Nathan. Now in an interview | :06:29. | :06:35.
with the BBC Becky's father and stepmother have described the pain | :06:36. | :06:38.
of something like this happening within their family unit. They begin | :06:39. | :06:42.
by describing the moment that they heard how Becky was killed. | :06:43. | :06:46.
The devastation and the heartbreak is undescribable. | :06:47. | :06:49.
I do not have the vocabulary to describe the feeling that we have. | :06:50. | :06:53.
It is a darkness that just would not leave the house. | :06:54. | :06:56.
Sat on the bed. Rocking violently backwards and forwards. | :06:57. | :07:04.
He has always been open and honest with me. | :07:05. | :07:38.
Well, it was your son and my daughter. | :07:39. | :07:46.
Well, Nathan was so arrogant he thought he could get away with it. | :07:47. | :07:49.
You know, I loved him like he was my own son. | :07:50. | :07:52.
At the time I loved him like my own son. | :07:53. | :07:56.
They need to be put away and not let out. | :07:57. | :07:59.
Clearly there is something psychologically wrong with | :08:00. | :08:01.
There is only one way of paying for the sort of crime they have done | :08:02. | :08:08.
I can't really say any more than that. | :08:09. | :08:22.
It's really hot anyway because of the microwave. | :08:23. | :08:29.
At ten o'clock I always expect her to come through the door. | :08:30. | :08:38.
That is when the thoughts start happening. | :08:39. | :08:47.
And you want to keep thinking over and over again in your head, | :08:48. | :08:50.
We have known from the first minute we clapped eyes on | :08:51. | :09:01.
each other, we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. | :09:02. | :09:04.
If this does not break us up then nothing is going to. | :09:05. | :09:12.
Darren and Angie. You can see more of that interview in a special | :09:13. | :09:24.
edition of BBC Points West in the Bristol area and also simulcast on | :09:25. | :09:26.
the BBC News Channel at the same time. Two other men were found not | :09:27. | :09:35.
guilty of assisting an offender by the jury here this afternoon. Nathan | :09:36. | :09:39.
Matthews and Shauna Hoare will return to the court on Friday to be | :09:40. | :09:40.
sentenced. Thank you. Millions of people have observed | :09:41. | :09:47.
a two-minute silence to remember those who've paid the ultimate price | :09:48. | :09:49.
while serving their country. Veterans | :09:50. | :09:52.
and serving military personnel took part in Armistice Day ceremonies | :09:53. | :09:53.
across the UK, paying their respects to the nation's war dead | :09:54. | :09:57.
at the moment the guns fell silent Our Royal Correspondent Nicholas | :09:58. | :10:00.
Witchell reports And many generations later, it is | :10:01. | :10:14.
still a moment which resonates. At the stroke of 11, silence was | :10:15. | :10:26.
kept as people paused to remember. After the silence, | :10:27. | :11:38.
in Trafalgar Square the crowds were entertained by Second World War | :11:39. | :11:50.
veteran Danny McCrudden. As with all veterans, | :11:51. | :11:56.
Remembrance matters to him. I think | :11:57. | :11:58.
of all my shipmates that went down. I think of all | :11:59. | :12:01.
the comrades I knew during the war. Poppies were placed in | :12:02. | :12:03.
the fountains in Trafalgar Square. And dropped from a biplane over | :12:04. | :12:18.
the Fleet Air Arm Memorial Church Casualties of war were remembered | :12:19. | :12:20.
in Afghanistan. And across the Channel in France, | :12:21. | :12:28.
which always stages its national ceremony of Remembrance on the 11th | :12:29. | :12:33.
of November, President Hollande laid Armistice Day, resonant still nearly | :12:34. | :12:36.
a century on, when lives lost The number of people out | :12:37. | :12:43.
of work has fallen to Official figures show unemployment | :12:44. | :12:50.
fell by 100,000 to around 1.75 million in | :12:51. | :13:01.
the last three months to September. But average pay hasn't risen by | :13:02. | :13:03.
as much as anticipated over the same period | :13:04. | :13:05.
- as our economics correspondent This great industry, | :13:06. | :13:08.
one that sells Bangladeshi cuisine There is plenty of demand for it | :13:09. | :13:14.
but not enough cooks. With unemployment so low, | :13:15. | :13:20.
the pool of people who might want to And some restaurants are having to | :13:21. | :13:23.
shut because they can't serve Eight to ten restaurants | :13:24. | :13:27.
are closing every week. If we had enough staff | :13:28. | :13:32.
we could survive. Today it is 8-10, | :13:33. | :13:39.
but tomorrow it could be 8-12 and six months later it could be 50 | :13:40. | :13:42.
restaurants closing every week. If we can sort out these staff | :13:43. | :13:50.
shortage problems we can survive. The theory says that if unemployment | :13:51. | :13:56.
gets low enough, if labour markets are tight enough, then employers | :13:57. | :13:59.
will have the pay more to get staff Private sector wages have risen | :14:00. | :14:02.
by around 3%, but that is not enough In fact, the price of goods | :14:03. | :14:07.
like this has been falling. Unemployment is now lower than it | :14:08. | :14:10.
has been for seven years, With wages rising by just 2.5%, | :14:11. | :14:13.
slightly less than the fall. Unemployment is falling | :14:14. | :14:23.
and employment is at record highs, so businesses increasingly need to | :14:24. | :14:29.
look elsewhere to find If the UK can bring in skills from | :14:30. | :14:31.
abroad where it needs them as well as providing opportunities to those | :14:32. | :14:37.
in the UK who are unemployed or out of the labour market altogether | :14:38. | :14:40.
but want to work, it should be ultimately a good thing for both | :14:41. | :14:43.
businesses and UK employees. The number of UK citizens in work | :14:44. | :14:50.
rose by 122,000 in the last year. But the number | :14:51. | :14:53.
of non-UK nationals working here That did not do much to bring | :14:54. | :14:55.
in the skills needed The stepbrother | :14:56. | :15:03.
of Bristol school girl Becky Watts And still to come - | :15:04. | :15:12.
After England's drubbing at the Rugby World Cup, team coach | :15:13. | :15:16.
Stuart Lancaster steps down. And coming up on Reporting Scotland | :15:17. | :15:21.
at 6.30: A Loganair flight makes an emergency landing - | :15:22. | :15:24.
a day after MSPs raised concerns And scrumpy from windfalls - | :15:25. | :15:26.
the new Scottish cider David Cameron has joined more than | :15:27. | :15:33.
60 leaders from Europe and Africa at a two-day summit in Malta - where | :15:34. | :15:46.
they're trying to find a solution EU countries are expected to offer | :15:47. | :15:50.
billions of pounds in aid to Africa to try to stem the flow of people | :15:51. | :15:57.
into Europe. More than 750,000 migrants are | :15:58. | :16:00.
believed to have arrived by sea so far this year, but the number may | :16:01. | :16:02.
be higher as some may have For those travelling from Africa, | :16:03. | :16:06.
the most popular route But it's dangerous - | :16:07. | :16:15.
thousands have died - attempting to cross the | :16:16. | :16:19.
Mediterranean. Clive Myrie is in Malta - | :16:20. | :16:21.
where the summit is taking place - Clive, world leaders desperately | :16:22. | :16:24.
casting around for a solution to this problem, | :16:25. | :16:29.
now they're focusing on Africa. Yes, Fiona. Much of the emphasis in | :16:30. | :16:41.
the debate on the migration crisis has been on Syrian refugees. But | :16:42. | :16:46.
tens of thousands of those trying to reach Europe are Africans. It was | :16:47. | :16:51.
the sinking of a refugee boat back in April when 800 people died that | :16:52. | :16:56.
led to this summit. Most of the dead were Africans sailing from Libya. | :16:57. | :17:01.
Indeed, all the bodies recovered are buried here on Malta. How can the EU | :17:02. | :17:06.
and Africa better manage the current migration crisis, and hopefully save | :17:07. | :17:07.
lives? The Maltese Prime Minister has | :17:08. | :17:16.
referred to these waters as a giant cemetery. The Mediterranean, a | :17:17. | :17:19.
graveyard for tens of thousands of those who try to reach Europe. | :17:20. | :17:25.
Today, pleasure boats on the sea. Now Malta is the venue for talks on | :17:26. | :17:28.
one of the most important issues of our time, how best to tackle mass | :17:29. | :17:33.
migration from Africa to Europe? So crucial as the summit, they have | :17:34. | :17:36.
already built on you meant to it. But we'll be meeting of African and | :17:37. | :17:41.
European delegates be worthy of any memorial? TRANSLATION: The strong | :17:42. | :17:46.
message I have to deliver is we need to tackle the profound causes of | :17:47. | :17:52.
immigration. Poverty, inequality, the democratic deficit and | :17:53. | :17:56.
insecurity. David Cameron is here for talks. While visiting a Royal | :17:57. | :18:02.
Navy ship docked nearby, whose sailors have rescued migrants all | :18:03. | :18:06.
summer, he outlined where he was seeking agreement. Now we need to do | :18:07. | :18:10.
much more to smash the criminal gangs who are fuelling this terrible | :18:11. | :18:14.
trade in people and also break the link between getting on a boat and | :18:15. | :18:17.
getting the chance to settle in Europe. Africa's migrants and | :18:18. | :18:23.
refugees are second only to Syrians in the numbers trying to reach | :18:24. | :18:29.
Europe. These are Somalis I met back in June. What are you hoping for in | :18:30. | :18:36.
Europe? I want a good education. Somalia, Eritrea and Nigeria | :18:37. | :18:41.
provides the vast majority of the thousands of Africans who have tried | :18:42. | :18:47.
to get the EU this year. Now in Malta, African leaders want more | :18:48. | :18:50.
legal routes for migrants to settle in Europe and more aid to tackle | :18:51. | :18:56.
poverty. In return, Europe is hoping Africa will work harder to stem | :18:57. | :19:02.
illegal migration. The UN's Deputy Secretary-General told me the Malta | :19:03. | :19:05.
summit is a crucial chance for both sides to see the other's point of | :19:06. | :19:10.
view. To have an understanding for each other's position is probably | :19:11. | :19:14.
the recipe for dealing with something we will have to live with | :19:15. | :19:18.
and need to live within the future, namely, in a globalised world, | :19:19. | :19:23.
people moving across borders. As all the delegates gathered tonight, the | :19:24. | :19:28.
smiles and the gravity of their task. Unless they can come up with | :19:29. | :19:33.
workable solutions to tackle the migration crisis, more people will | :19:34. | :19:42.
die trying to get to Europe. I have been told the presummit discussions | :19:43. | :19:46.
went on until 5am as the delegates tried to find common ground. The | :19:47. | :19:49.
word is they did reach several agreements. The big question is, | :19:50. | :19:54.
will they be enough to stem the tide of Africans trying to reach Europe | :19:55. | :19:56.
and so save lives? Thank you. Let's take a brief look at some | :19:57. | :20:00.
of the day's other news stories. German regulators say tests carried | :20:01. | :20:03.
out since the Volkswagen emissions scandal was uncovered - suggest | :20:04. | :20:06.
other diesel cars from other manufacturers are emitting higher | :20:07. | :20:08.
than permitted levels of pollution. The car-makers involved haven't | :20:09. | :20:10.
been identified because the A British pensioner - who spent more | :20:11. | :20:12.
than a year in a Saudi prison after being found with homemade wine in | :20:13. | :20:19.
his car - has returned to the UK. Karl Andree's family had been | :20:20. | :20:22.
concerned he would also be publicly flogged before being released - | :20:23. | :20:25.
although Saudi officials have insisted this was never | :20:26. | :20:27.
their intention. The Fifa President, Sepp Blatter, | :20:28. | :20:31.
is in hospital in Switzerland after suffering what's been described as | :20:32. | :20:34.
a "small stress-related breakdown". The 79-year-old, | :20:35. | :20:38.
who's been suspended from football's governing body over | :20:39. | :20:40.
corruption allegations, is said to Friends say he should | :20:41. | :20:44.
leave hospital next week. The England Rugby coach - | :20:45. | :20:52.
Stuart Lancaster - has stepped down following the team's dismal | :20:53. | :20:54.
performance in the World Cup. For the first time ever they failed | :20:55. | :20:57.
to reach the knockout stages of the tournament, | :20:58. | :21:02.
despite being the host nation. In a statement, Stuart Lancaster | :21:03. | :21:04.
said he took responsibility Our sports correspondent Joe Wilson | :21:05. | :21:06.
is at Twickenham, I guess this No, Fiona. We are told it was a | :21:07. | :21:21.
mutual decision for Lancaster to go. Since the World Cup, there had been | :21:22. | :21:26.
recriminations in the media. At least 59 people have been consulted, | :21:27. | :21:30.
including the England players themselves. Some of them said they | :21:31. | :21:38.
wanted Lancaster to stay. But change was inevitable. | :21:39. | :21:41.
Rugby union history will show that the House of Lancaster fell | :21:42. | :21:44.
That was the scoreline when England were beaten by Australia, | :21:45. | :21:48.
Four years of planning, millions of pounds of investment, failure. | :21:49. | :21:57.
Stuart Lancaster was the coach with the common touch. | :21:58. | :22:00.
Never an international player, he would find time to help out | :22:01. | :22:03.
with children, even when running the England team. | :22:04. | :22:07.
He rose through the ranks at the RFU. | :22:08. | :22:11.
The man alongside him here is the man who appointed him, Ian Ritchie, | :22:12. | :22:17.
Chief Executive, who promised the buck would stop with him. | :22:18. | :22:21.
I don't duck the accountability and responsibility. | :22:22. | :22:23.
If you are the Chief Executive of the organisation, | :22:24. | :22:27.
you need to deal with that, but I think it is a matter for | :22:28. | :22:30.
the chairman of the board as well, as to whether or not my situation | :22:31. | :22:34.
Lancaster certainly had some success for England even beat New Zealand | :22:35. | :22:40.
Time and again in the Six Nations, England under Lancaster | :22:41. | :22:45.
But at the World Cup, Lancaster gambled. | :22:46. | :22:49.
The ill-fated Sam Burgess experiment, picked to play for | :22:50. | :22:51.
There is a coaching opportunity here for somebody. | :22:52. | :23:04.
It is an incredibly exciting position for someone to want to | :23:05. | :23:06.
take, but you have to weigh that up against the media scrutiny | :23:07. | :23:09.
and the absolute knowledge you must perform if you are in that role. | :23:10. | :23:12.
Former international Josh Lewsey has today resigned from his role | :23:13. | :23:15.
But England want a proven an international coach and they | :23:16. | :23:26.
It is no surprise to see names from Australia and South Africa being | :23:27. | :23:41.
named as possible replacements. Other unions around the world should | :23:42. | :23:45.
be warned. The RFU have the money and in their words, no inhibitions | :23:46. | :23:50.
in searching for their next coach. Thank you. | :23:51. | :23:52.
The International Space Station is set to get its first | :23:53. | :23:55.
Tim Peake, a former army major, will spend six months onboard. | :23:56. | :24:00.
To get there, as you might imagine, involves years of preparation | :24:01. | :24:02.
and Major Tim has spent much of that in Russia. | :24:03. | :24:05.
From there, our science editor David Shukman reports. | :24:06. | :24:07.
And Tim Peake and two colleagues face | :24:08. | :24:12.
In a simulator of a spacecraft they will fly in, | :24:13. | :24:18.
they sit for three cramped gruelling hours as their instructors test them | :24:19. | :24:21.
A leak, an engine failure, and when it ended, Tim Peake emerged | :24:22. | :24:27.
We had a dissent, we had a number of malfunctions. | :24:28. | :24:38.
But I think we coped with it all pretty well and ultimately, | :24:39. | :24:41.
We are going to have a debrief now and find out how it went. | :24:42. | :24:48.
Tim Peake's journey into space began as a cadet in West Sussex. | :24:49. | :24:50.
He was keen on flying and became an Army helicopter pilot | :24:51. | :24:53.
Then being selected for a mission up to the International Space Station. | :24:54. | :24:59.
This is a mock-up of part of the International Space Station | :25:00. | :25:05.
and it gives you a sense of the incredible scale of this | :25:06. | :25:08.
structure which has been in orbit above Earth for the last 15 years. | :25:09. | :25:12.
Now this is one of the Russian modules and if I show you here, | :25:13. | :25:18.
you can see how these different modules all connect together to form | :25:19. | :25:21.
But this one acts as the focal point. | :25:22. | :25:27.
Around this table, every evening, this is where Tim Peake | :25:28. | :25:30.
and the five other astronauts are going to be gathering. | :25:31. | :25:33.
To get this far has taken six years of training, | :25:34. | :25:36.
including working underwater to get ready for a possible spacewalk. | :25:37. | :25:41.
It is a chance to fulfil childhood dream. | :25:42. | :25:45.
Could you ever have imagined being on the brink of going into space? | :25:46. | :25:48.
I got into aviation at an early age and I was really | :25:49. | :25:53.
focused about that and passionate about it, but I would never believe | :25:54. | :25:56.
that I would be here, five weeks away from a launch display. | :25:57. | :25:59.
So, next stop, the launch pad, for a spectacular trek into space. | :26:00. | :26:09.
The duration of the mission, six months. | :26:10. | :26:23.
Time for a look at the weather. Here's Helen Willetts. | :26:24. | :26:31.
Hello. Back down-to-earth. The big weather story is Abigail. They are | :26:32. | :26:38.
being named if they are expected to have a major impact on the UK and | :26:39. | :26:42.
there is an amber warning in force from the Met Office for Abigail. At | :26:43. | :26:48.
the moment, this evening, the start of Diwali, the Festival of light, | :26:49. | :26:56.
there are some sharp showers and gusty winds, but they will fade for | :26:57. | :27:01.
a cold night. There is a little bit of mist and fog around in the | :27:02. | :27:05.
morning. That will clear through the rush hour. It. Dry and bright for | :27:06. | :27:10.
many, almost the calm before the storm. Already into the afternoon, | :27:11. | :27:16.
even here we will see the gusts picking up. Gail is driving another | :27:17. | :27:20.
band of rain up through the Irish Sea. Some wetter weather to come | :27:21. | :27:26.
eventually. By the end of the day, tea-time, we will have some severe | :27:27. | :27:30.
gale force winds picking up across parts of Scotland and Northern | :27:31. | :27:35.
Ireland. Then into the evening, they escalate further. We are expecting | :27:36. | :27:43.
gusts of wind up to 60 or 80 mph. Up to 80 in the far north-west of | :27:44. | :27:49.
Scotland. That is enough to cause disruption to power and transport, | :27:50. | :27:52.
hence the amber warning. It looks like a stormy night tomorrow night. | :27:53. | :27:56.
Even further south, we will get a buffeting from the gales. As a | :27:57. | :28:03.
parting shot, behind that weather system, some colder air. We could | :28:04. | :28:07.
have our first snow of the season, wet snow for the Pennines, Cumbria | :28:08. | :28:12.
and Scotland. It will feel much colder. Abigail is what we are | :28:13. | :28:19.
keeping our ion. You can get more on Abigail from our website. | :28:20. | :28:20.
Thank you. The stepbrother of Becky Watts has | :28:21. | :28:32.
been found guilty of her murder. | :28:33. | :28:34. |
