Arrests in Pakistan after yesterday's bombing | :00:00. | :00:07.
which killed more than 70 - many of them children. | :00:08. | :00:15.
As the first funerals are held for the victims there are calls | :00:16. | :00:18.
for better co-operation between security agencies. | :00:19. | :00:27.
Many Christians and Muslims were gathered there. | :00:28. | :00:29.
And when we came to know that the majority was Christian, | :00:30. | :00:32.
even the Muslims all are human beings and really, we cried. | :00:33. | :00:34.
What Katie did - flights cancelled, trees uprooted and houses damaged | :00:35. | :00:38.
as a storm sweeps across southern Britain. | :00:39. | :00:40.
The first pictures inside the historic town of Palmyra - | :00:41. | :00:42.
hours after Syrian troops recapture it from the so-called | :00:43. | :00:44.
And warnings of an education 'crisis' - as unions claim excessive | :00:45. | :00:49.
workloads and inadequate pay will leave schools struggling | :00:50. | :00:52.
Security forces in Pakistan say they've arrested a number of people | :00:53. | :01:17.
and seized weapons in the hunt for those behind yesterday's bomb | :01:18. | :01:20.
The death toll has risen to more than 70 - | :01:21. | :01:25.
A breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban claimed | :01:26. | :01:31.
responsibility - saying it was targeting the city's | :01:32. | :01:33.
Our correspondent Shaimaa Khalil reports now from Lahore. | :01:34. | :01:43.
Eerily quiet this morning, the park where dozens | :01:44. | :01:45.
Families had come here to celebrate Easter, | :01:46. | :01:49.
but instead, were caught up in carnage. | :01:50. | :01:53.
A place where children came to play, now the site of a massacre. | :01:54. | :02:01.
16-year-old Sharon had been at the park with his brother. | :02:02. | :02:04.
His mother was too distressed to speak. | :02:05. | :02:15.
All she could tell us was the last time she saw him, | :02:16. | :02:17.
The body of 16-year-old Sharon has just been brought outside his family | :02:18. | :02:24.
He's just one victim among the dozens killed in yesterday's | :02:25. | :02:31.
blasts and many families across Lahore will be mourning | :02:32. | :02:33.
Christians were the target of the bombing by a splinter group | :02:34. | :02:41.
Christians and Muslims, men, women and children, | :02:42. | :02:48.
When we came to know, our hearts broke. | :02:49. | :02:55.
We could not handle ourselves because we knew it was Sunday, | :02:56. | :02:59.
many Christians and Muslims would be gathered there. | :03:00. | :03:02.
And when we came to know that the majority was Christian, | :03:03. | :03:05.
even the Muslims, all are human beings, and really, we cried. | :03:06. | :03:10.
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Nawaz Sharif visited survivors today. | :03:11. | :03:13.
And vowed to hunt down those responsible. | :03:14. | :03:16.
He admitted that Pakistan's different security agencies needed | :03:17. | :03:19.
to be better coordinated in the fight against terrorism. | :03:20. | :03:32.
This is another attempt by government and security forces to | :03:33. | :03:37.
show strength in the face of a national tragedy. For families | :03:38. | :03:42.
burying their dead today any security operation will be of little | :03:43. | :03:43.
consolation. We can speak to Shaima | :03:44. | :03:45.
Khalil in Lahore now. The Prime Minister called for swift | :03:46. | :03:53.
action and there have been some arrests. There have been some | :03:54. | :03:56.
arrests. The government has announced a special security | :03:57. | :04:00.
operation across the Punjab province. As they put it, to go | :04:01. | :04:06.
after and crack down on militants. The minute the announcement came out | :04:07. | :04:10.
of quiz questions on scepticism arose because people are quite | :04:11. | :04:16.
sceptical of how able the government and security forces are in keeping | :04:17. | :04:21.
soft target safe especially that the group who carried out the attack | :04:22. | :04:24.
have promised more attacks on schools, on universities and also | :04:25. | :04:27.
said they will target the government and the army. In 2014 the Taliban | :04:28. | :04:36.
carried out an attack in the shower against the Army public school in | :04:37. | :04:40.
which 132 children were killed. After that the military stepped up | :04:41. | :04:44.
their campaign against the militants and pushed them back near the tribal | :04:45. | :04:49.
areas. But today and yesterday these militants were able to infiltrate | :04:50. | :04:54.
and plan and carry out an attack at the heart of Lahore. So people will | :04:55. | :04:58.
be sceptical at the government and security forces capability to come | :04:59. | :05:02.
good at promise of controlling security. | :05:03. | :05:05.
Storm Katie has battered large parts of Southern Britain - | :05:06. | :05:07.
leaving flights cancelled, property damaged - | :05:08. | :05:09.
and thousands of people without power. | :05:10. | :05:11.
Gusts of up to 106mph were recorded - as more than 100,000 homes | :05:12. | :05:14.
were left without power at the height of the winds, | :05:15. | :05:17.
with thousands still awaiting reconnection tonight. | :05:18. | :05:19.
The Environment Agency has also issued 27 flood warnings | :05:20. | :05:21.
We can go now to Robert Hall who's in Woodley in Berkshire. | :05:22. | :05:33.
Storm Katie swept through this part of the Thames Valley at about 7:30am | :05:34. | :05:40.
this morning with enough strength to cause the collapse that you can see | :05:41. | :05:43.
behind me. Effectively shutting down the Woodley shopping centre. It was | :05:44. | :05:47.
a frightening few moments at the end of what had been a wild night. | :05:48. | :05:50.
A rude awakening after the Easter weekend. | :05:51. | :05:52.
Storm Katie may have arrived while most of us were asleep, | :05:53. | :05:55.
but there was no missing its journey east. | :05:56. | :05:59.
As the storm dismantled three stories of scaffolding. Some of | :06:00. | :06:11.
these businesses will be closed for 12 days until scaffolding is | :06:12. | :06:15.
repaired. We also have to make sure electricity lines or anything | :06:16. | :06:19.
untoward, making sure all the residents are safe and well | :06:20. | :06:21.
informed. In Gosport in Hampshire a series | :06:22. | :06:22.
of storm force gusts tore the entire Suddenly we heard this tremendous | :06:23. | :06:25.
crash and the whole building shook And that kind of got us out | :06:26. | :06:31.
of bed quite quickly. The storm had tracked | :06:32. | :06:43.
from Cornwall to the North Sea. Toppling trees, damaging buildings, | :06:44. | :06:45.
bringing down power lines. At its peak the gale had enough | :06:46. | :06:49.
force to twist this tower crane Along the south coast | :06:50. | :06:52.
there were warnings of coastal flooding and ferry | :06:53. | :07:00.
sailings were disrupted. More than 80 flights were cancelled | :07:01. | :07:05.
at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, some fights that did attempt to make | :07:06. | :07:07.
it in were forced to abort. An uncomfortable few minutes | :07:08. | :07:12.
for travellers on the way home. Back in Gosport, the sun is shining | :07:13. | :07:18.
but the clear up has some way to go. At these flats near the naval base, | :07:19. | :07:22.
roofing installation and timbers had dropped three stories | :07:23. | :07:25.
and crashed onto cars below. Storm Katie may have moved on, | :07:26. | :07:29.
but there are lasting reminders Well all the locations with being | :07:30. | :07:42.
too today, we have been impressed by the strength of the storm and the | :07:43. | :07:46.
effect it had. Many people are thankful it did happen mostly during | :07:47. | :07:50.
the hours of darkness. If there had been more people about with that | :07:51. | :07:53.
amount of debris flying around, things could have been a lot more | :07:54. | :07:54.
serious. Russia's President Putin has phoned | :07:55. | :07:57.
Bashar al-Assad to congratulate him on the Syrian Army's recapture | :07:58. | :07:59.
of Palmyra from so-called Islamic The army says it will now use | :08:00. | :08:01.
the city as a strategic stronghold Palmyra is a World Heritage Site | :08:02. | :08:06.
and there are hopes that IS may not have wreaked as much damage | :08:07. | :08:12.
on its historic monuments Our World Affairs Correspondent | :08:13. | :08:14.
Richard Galpin reports. Syrian troops relaxing | :08:15. | :08:27.
in the streets of Palmyra town after what appears | :08:28. | :08:29.
to have been a victory It took them just a few weeks | :08:30. | :08:41.
to recapture the area which lies on a vital highway | :08:42. | :08:44.
leading from Damascus They had significant support | :08:45. | :08:46.
from the Russian air force. The militants took control in May | :08:47. | :08:56.
last year and soon began a campaign of destruction. This photograph | :08:57. | :09:00.
showing one of several ancient tombs in the area being blown up. This new | :09:01. | :09:07.
video seems to show that the expected wholesale destruction of | :09:08. | :09:11.
the UNESCO world Heritage site has not happened, to the relief of | :09:12. | :09:15.
archaeologists everywhere, especially in Syria. When my son was | :09:16. | :09:28.
born it was the most beautiful day in my life. The second most little | :09:29. | :09:33.
day was when pub mirror was not destroyed. It was saved partly | :09:34. | :09:44.
because the top architect refused to reveal the whereabouts of several | :09:45. | :09:49.
valuable artefacts. He was later beheaded. The significance goes | :09:50. | :09:57.
beyond the saving of the prized city. It is also a very significant | :09:58. | :10:05.
strategic gain. It can be used as a base against jihadist forces. The | :10:06. | :10:11.
Syrian army is even vowing to move against Raqqa. Viewed as the Islamic | :10:12. | :10:19.
state's headquarters within Syria. The Russian air force would probably | :10:20. | :10:24.
be behind all this. It has already been in action in recent months. The | :10:25. | :10:30.
combination of air strikes and reenergised Syrian forces on the | :10:31. | :10:34.
ground is putting President Assad and the Kremlin at the battle | :10:35. | :10:40.
against Islamic State in this country. Western leaders are not | :10:41. | :10:42.
come plain in. One of the largest teaching unions - | :10:43. | :10:46.
the National Union of Teachers - says the profession is facing | :10:47. | :10:49.
a recruitment crisis. Its annual conference in Brighton | :10:50. | :10:53.
heard how excessive workloads and poor pay were driving teachers | :10:54. | :10:55.
out of the classroom. The government says the vacancy rate | :10:56. | :10:57.
in England has not got any worse - and it's spending millions | :10:58. | :11:01.
to improve job opportunities Here's our Education | :11:02. | :11:03.
Editor Branwen Jeffreys. Years after he left, | :11:04. | :11:09.
Peter's back to school. He wants to be a teacher | :11:10. | :11:13.
but can't train without GCSE maths. Then he can qualify and they can | :11:14. | :11:16.
hire him as their drama teacher. Sitting with students who are 15, | :11:17. | :11:23.
16, taking their GCSEs, So you've got to have a lot | :11:24. | :11:26.
of belief in yourself and your subject to | :11:27. | :11:31.
really want to do it. Recruiting teachers is a challenge | :11:32. | :11:35.
in many parts of the UK. In wealthier bits of England, | :11:36. | :11:39.
the cost of housing makes it harder. Here, in Oxford, | :11:40. | :11:43.
the new business teacher It's no longer enough | :11:44. | :11:44.
to put a job advertisement Last term, I was advertising | :11:45. | :11:51.
because of promotions, English, geography, business | :11:52. | :11:56.
studies, physics, and chemistry. And I got no responses | :11:57. | :11:59.
to those five adverts. Since, we've managed to recruit | :12:00. | :12:03.
but it's very difficult. Schools are getting busier | :12:04. | :12:08.
because the number of pupils That's increasing the pressure | :12:09. | :12:11.
to recruit more good teachers. But, already, | :12:12. | :12:18.
there aren't enough going There are worries | :12:19. | :12:21.
in Scotland, as well, where some teacher training places | :12:22. | :12:26.
haven't been filled. And concerns raised | :12:27. | :12:31.
across the border by their No teacher goes into | :12:32. | :12:33.
teaching for the money. It certainly doesn't | :12:34. | :12:37.
help keep you in So, with a starting salary | :12:38. | :12:44.
of 22,000 a year, They make the complex understandable | :12:45. | :13:00.
about 15-20% of gross salary They make the complex understandable | :13:01. | :13:17.
and the mind-boggling at magical. In glossy adverts, teaching gets the | :13:18. | :13:21.
hard sell. Big campaigns are underway in England and in Scotland. | :13:22. | :13:27.
A shake-up of teacher training is promised in Wales. Ministers know | :13:28. | :13:29.
that it is what happens here in the Three more people have been charged | :13:30. | :13:33.
with terrorism offences after last was released today - | :13:34. | :13:38.
with investigators saying there was not enough | :13:39. | :13:40.
evidence to hold him. Police have released new CCTV | :13:41. | :13:42.
pictures of the moments before As they're still trying to identify | :13:43. | :13:46.
the man in the hat Our Europe correspondent | :13:47. | :13:49.
Damian Grammaticas is in Brussels. Yes, those three charges were | :13:50. | :14:03.
announced today by prosecutors. Those men were arrested in raids in | :14:04. | :14:08.
and around Brussels. It has not been said whether they are tied directly | :14:09. | :14:14.
to the attacks. The most significant development was the release of this | :14:15. | :14:21.
man, the only figure in custody charged with terrorist murders. | :14:22. | :14:34.
Police it was understood were trying to identify him as one of the | :14:35. | :14:39.
attackers. That has not been possible. They are still looking for | :14:40. | :14:44.
the man in the video who is still on the loose, it would appear. The | :14:45. | :14:49.
health minister here has confirmed that four more people died in the | :14:50. | :14:56.
attacks. For more people were injured and have since died in | :14:57. | :15:00.
hospital, taking the death total now to 35. | :15:01. | :15:02.
It's six months since almost 3,000 jobs were lost in Redcar | :15:03. | :15:05.
with the closure of the SSI steelworks. | :15:06. | :15:10.
Cheaper imports were blamed for its demise - | :15:11. | :15:12.
bringing an end to more than a century of steel-making | :15:13. | :15:14.
So how have the workers who lost their livelihoods fared since? | :15:15. | :15:18.
Steel-making dominated this part of the world for over 150 years. | :15:19. | :15:23.
If you had a job here, you had a job for life. | :15:24. | :15:26.
There is Teesside steel in the Sydney Harbour Bridge. | :15:27. | :15:34.
But last autumn the industry was hit by a drop in prices | :15:35. | :15:37.
It meant that here in Redcar, where the site was mothballed once | :15:38. | :15:42.
before, production of slab steel finally came to an end. | :15:43. | :15:46.
Today some of those workers have rebuilt their lives. | :15:47. | :15:53.
Six months ago I just thought my world had ended. | :15:54. | :15:55.
We thought the rug had been pulled from under our feet. | :15:56. | :16:00.
How can we afford this mortgage, how can we afford to keep things going? | :16:01. | :16:03.
Now I have my own company cleaning carpets and doing upholstery. | :16:04. | :16:07.
People are starting to use us and work is coming in, | :16:08. | :16:10.
Now I work for a company that manufactures excavators. | :16:11. | :16:18.
Six months ago it was terrible, applying for a seven or eight jobs | :16:19. | :16:21.
a day, very rarely hear anything back after the applications | :16:22. | :16:24.
But now I have got this job, I'm working with a really good bunch | :16:25. | :16:29.
But what about the hundreds of others hit by SSI's closure? | :16:30. | :16:33.
2915 people have lost their jobs from SSI and its supply chain. | :16:34. | :16:42.
1212 are no longer claiming benefit because most | :16:43. | :16:45.
And 724 jobs have been created or safeguarded. | :16:46. | :16:53.
But one steel union is questioning those figures today. | :16:54. | :16:56.
The Community Union says many former workers over the age of 50 | :16:57. | :17:00.
are using their pensions to support themselves, | :17:01. | :17:04.
so they don't show up on the claimant count. | :17:05. | :17:07.
People in Redcar are also unconvinced. | :17:08. | :17:10.
They fear the town is still moving in the wrong direction. | :17:11. | :17:13.
To me Redcar is just going down and down. | :17:14. | :17:17.
They're saying all these people have found jobs, | :17:18. | :17:19.
but the people we know at SSI haven't. | :17:20. | :17:22.
We have been down, but we're going to go back up. | :17:23. | :17:28.
While there is some optimism here on Teesside, other steel | :17:29. | :17:31.
communities in the UK are bracing themselves for more job losses. | :17:32. | :17:36.
They will be watching Redcar closely to see if a town built | :17:37. | :17:39.
on steel-making can truly turn itself around. | :17:40. | :17:42.
Now before we go - after blaming leaves on the line | :17:43. | :17:51.
and the wrong kind of snow for previous delays - | :17:52. | :17:53.
now comes the koala on the carriageway. | :17:54. | :17:56.
The marsupial caused motorists to put on the brakes | :17:57. | :17:59.
near Brisbane in Australia when it wandered into the road. | :18:00. | :18:02.
A police officer made sure the animal made it to safety | :18:03. | :18:05.
and it eventually took shelter in a tree. | :18:06. | :18:09.
We're back with the late news at 10.40. | :18:10. | :18:13.
Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :18:14. | :18:17. |
