He's not going quietly - Britain's top EU diplomat | :00:00. | :00:00.
launches a stinging attack on ministers after resigning. | :00:07. | :00:11.
Sir Ivan Rogers' resignation email accuses the government of muddled | :00:12. | :00:13.
thinking over Brexit - leave campaigners say | :00:14. | :00:16.
The e-mail was verging on the pompous, really, | :00:17. | :00:23.
in the sense that it was an awful lot about him and a lot about, | :00:24. | :00:27.
you know, truth, as though everything he said to the government | :00:28. | :00:30.
was almost chiselled into tablets of stone. | :00:31. | :00:32.
Theresa May has just weeks to find a replacement - | :00:33. | :00:34.
colleagues say he'll be a tough act to follow. | :00:35. | :00:42.
I think it's a blow because he was a hugely | :00:43. | :00:48.
experienced professional dedicated public servant. | :00:49. | :00:49.
He is a really good diplomat but he also had that real insight | :00:50. | :00:53.
The resignation has sparked a row over the independence | :00:54. | :00:56.
The parents of the man shot by police in Huddersfield say it's | :00:57. | :01:03.
the sort of thing that happens in America. | :01:04. | :01:05.
A not so festive end to the shopping season - | :01:06. | :01:07.
disappointing sales at Next over Christmas and a warning | :01:08. | :01:09.
The young girls killed in a hit and run in Oldham | :01:10. | :01:14.
on New Year's Eve - four men are charged. | :01:15. | :01:23.
No one could fail to mourn the loss of this brave man. | :01:24. | :01:27.
It's fifty years since Donald Campbell died while trying | :01:28. | :01:29.
The Pride of London is at stake this evening. | :01:30. | :01:34.
Chelsea can match Arsenal's 14 match winning streak | :01:35. | :01:36.
in the Premier League, but they'll have to | :01:37. | :01:38.
Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Six. | :01:39. | :02:02.
As resignation letters go - this one pulled no punches. | :02:03. | :02:05.
In a leaked e-mail to colleagues Sir Ivan Rogers - | :02:06. | :02:08.
who's quit as Britain's top EU diplomat - has accused | :02:09. | :02:11.
the government of muddled thinking over its Brexit plans. | :02:12. | :02:14.
But Leave campaigners argue that those forthright views | :02:15. | :02:17.
are precisely the reason Sir Ivan could no longer be trusted. | :02:18. | :02:22.
The resignation has set off a heated row over the role | :02:23. | :02:24.
of the civil service in the tough negotiations ahead. | :02:25. | :02:27.
Here's our diplomatic correspondent James Landale. | :02:28. | :02:31.
Sir Ivan Rogers, here on the right, was our man in Brussels. | :02:32. | :02:35.
The seasoned diplomat with the ear of Prime Ministers past and present. | :02:36. | :02:39.
But now he's gone, attacking Theresa May's | :02:40. | :02:42.
government for its "muddled thinking" about Brexit. | :02:43. | :02:46.
And former colleagues say his loss will be great, only months | :02:47. | :02:49.
His resignation at this particular point, just before | :02:50. | :02:54.
the triggering of Article 50, is a shame because he's | :02:55. | :02:56.
a man of great experience and expertise and knowledge. | :02:57. | :02:59.
Who would be very useful for the government. | :03:00. | :03:02.
I think it's a blow because he was a hugely | :03:03. | :03:04.
experienced, professional, dedicated public servant. | :03:05. | :03:07.
He was a really good diplomat but also had that real insight | :03:08. | :03:10.
Sir Ivan's job was to be Theresa May's eyes and ears | :03:11. | :03:15.
But in an outspoken resignation e-mail, he revealed that even | :03:16. | :03:21.
he was being kept out of the loop, saying, "We do not yet know | :03:22. | :03:25.
what the government will set as negotiating objectives | :03:26. | :03:28.
for the UK's relationship with the EU after exit." | :03:29. | :03:33.
That plan is being kept hidden, or at least it's | :03:34. | :03:35.
still being prepared, behind closed doors | :03:36. | :03:37.
Foreign Secretary, was he pushed to resign? | :03:38. | :03:42.
Ministers today refused to give yes, a running commentary, | :03:43. | :03:48.
or at least take any questions off their script. | :03:49. | :03:52.
In terms of our preparations for Brexit, we absolutely | :03:53. | :03:54.
For months Sir Ivan had helped David Cameron try to reform the EU | :03:55. | :03:59.
ahead of the referendum, traipsing fruitlessly | :04:00. | :04:01.
But he said in his letter that his new political masters | :04:02. | :04:06.
were not prepared for the even bigger talks ahead. | :04:07. | :04:10.
"Serious multilateral negotiating experience" - he said - | :04:11. | :04:14.
The structure of the UK's negotiating team needs | :04:15. | :04:17.
The government, he added, should listen more to British | :04:18. | :04:22.
officials in Brussels and make a stronger case for the importance | :04:23. | :04:25.
Saying, "Contrary to the beliefs of some, free trade does not just | :04:26. | :04:32.
happen when it is not supported by authorities." | :04:33. | :04:37.
Brexit MPs said this all confirmed that Sir Ivan was too pessimistic | :04:38. | :04:40.
about leaving the EU, and he was right to go. | :04:41. | :04:44.
The e-mail was verging on the pompous, really, | :04:45. | :04:47.
in the sense that it was an awful lot about him and a lot about, | :04:48. | :04:50.
you know, truth, as though everything he said to the government | :04:51. | :04:53.
was almost chiselled into tablets of stone. | :04:54. | :04:55.
As we go into what is an incredibly important negotiation, | :04:56. | :04:58.
we should have somebody leading for the UK who clearly believes | :04:59. | :05:00.
that the outcome can be beneficial to the UK. | :05:01. | :05:03.
But there were warnings against any attempt | :05:04. | :05:05.
We are creating an atmosphere where anyone who does not simply | :05:06. | :05:12.
parrot the view of a certain political group is seen to be | :05:13. | :05:16.
getting in the way of Brexit, and that is not what civil servants | :05:17. | :05:19.
The charge from Sir Ivan Rogers is a serious one. | :05:20. | :05:23.
That the government is not ready for the discussions about Brexit | :05:24. | :05:26.
That it doesn't have a strategy or negotiating team in place. | :05:27. | :05:35.
So as the Foreign Office here starts looking for a new ambassador, | :05:36. | :05:38.
MPs are looking for answers about what the government's | :05:39. | :05:40.
And they're hoping Theresa May will provide some in a speech | :05:41. | :05:44.
One she will have to write without Sir Ivan Rogers | :05:45. | :05:47.
Joining me from Downing Street is our deputy political | :05:48. | :05:53.
Since we have common error we are hearing a new diplomat has been | :05:54. | :06:10.
appointed. -- since we have come on air. He will be Sir Tim barrel, a | :06:11. | :06:15.
senior Foreign Office official, former Moscow ambassador and he has | :06:16. | :06:20.
done time in Brussels in his career and Downing Street hopes that they | :06:21. | :06:23.
can have a smoother relationship with him than with Ivan Rogers. But | :06:24. | :06:29.
still some questions to face the government, the resignation | :06:30. | :06:34.
highlighted tensions, more departments are involved, more than | :06:35. | :06:36.
just the Foreign Office and there are tensions between senior | :06:37. | :06:40.
officials and key ministers. Those officials believe that those | :06:41. | :06:43.
ministers just do not understand or will not admit the true complexity | :06:44. | :06:50.
of the Brexit question. It is about loyalty and faith for key Brexiteers | :06:51. | :06:54.
and that is a red rag to the pool for the civil service they say they | :06:55. | :06:59.
do not take sides, they make orders work. As if this negotiation was not | :07:00. | :07:05.
difficult enough, there are underlying tensions between senior | :07:06. | :07:08.
officials and senior ministers as well as a continuing resentment | :07:09. | :07:12.
between those who want to remain and Brexiteers. On the original | :07:13. | :07:21.
resignation, no official reaction yet from Downing Street, what kind | :07:22. | :07:24.
of arguments to think have been going on? Well for Theresa May it is | :07:25. | :07:30.
not about an ideological conviction about Brexit but making the plan | :07:31. | :07:34.
worked. But there is no clear plan yet. We are promised a significant | :07:35. | :07:38.
speech from the Prime Minister in the coming weeks to address some of | :07:39. | :07:43.
the details of Brexit and it just may clear up some of the pressure on | :07:44. | :07:47.
tourism made to give more detail and provide clarity. But given she wants | :07:48. | :07:52.
to keep her cards close and options open, I would not hold your breath. | :07:53. | :07:55.
Within the next hour there's due to be a vigil | :07:56. | :07:58.
in memory of Yasser Yacub - the man shot dead by a police | :07:59. | :08:01.
marksman as he drove off the M62 slip road in Huddersfield on Monday. | :08:02. | :08:04.
It follows a protest in Bradford last night. | :08:05. | :08:06.
Bradford West MP Naz Shah has appealed for calm. | :08:07. | :08:09.
The parents of the dead man have told the BBC the shooting | :08:10. | :08:11.
was the kind of thing they expected in America - not Britain - | :08:12. | :08:14.
In Bradford last night, an angry demonstration blocked | :08:15. | :08:23.
Police, don't shoot, said one of the banners, | :08:24. | :08:27.
as a small number of people protested about the shooting | :08:28. | :08:30.
of Yassar Yaqub, 15 miles from where he died. | :08:31. | :08:35.
It was largely peaceful, although at least one object | :08:36. | :08:41.
was thrown and some of those taking part wore balaclavas | :08:42. | :08:43.
A local MP has today appealed for the community to remain calm. | :08:44. | :08:50.
We need to wait to see what comes out of the investigation and that's | :08:51. | :08:54.
And in terms of the police, they have my confidence, | :08:55. | :09:00.
they have regular conversations with me and updates. | :09:01. | :09:03.
But if we need to have more conversations between the community | :09:04. | :09:05.
and the police, you know, we must have those conversations. | :09:06. | :09:09.
Yassar Yaqub was the man shot dead by police on Monday night. | :09:10. | :09:12.
Akgun was found in the car that he was in. | :09:13. | :09:15.
In 2010 he was cleared of attempted murder and a firearms offence, | :09:16. | :09:27.
after it was alleged that he opened fire on a car in Huddersfield. | :09:28. | :09:30.
Some local people have told us he was a renowned drugs dealer. | :09:31. | :09:33.
But others did not think he was involved in any criminal activity. | :09:34. | :09:36.
People living close to his home also say his house was targeted by gunmen | :09:37. | :09:39.
The house now has obvious security cameras on the outside. | :09:40. | :09:43.
Yassar Yaqub's father has spoken to the BBC today, | :09:44. | :09:46.
He said he didn't believe that his son would ever pull a gun | :09:47. | :09:51.
and if there was a gun found in his car, he doesn't believe it | :09:52. | :09:54.
He and his wife also feel that events over the last few | :09:55. | :10:00.
days are like something which would happen in America. | :10:01. | :10:01.
It was on Monday night that Yassar Yaqub was shot dead | :10:02. | :10:07.
Unmarked police cars forced his Audi to a stop. | :10:08. | :10:11.
West Yorkshire Police say it was a preplanned operation. | :10:12. | :10:15.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now | :10:16. | :10:16.
Five men were arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm | :10:17. | :10:21.
Today two of them have been bailed and three remain in custody. | :10:22. | :10:35.
There will be some concerns from the authorities this evening about any | :10:36. | :10:40.
further demonstrations taking place elsewhere in West Yorkshire. Here in | :10:41. | :10:45.
Huddersfield a vigil is set to take place later this evening weather | :10:46. | :10:49.
friends and family of Yassar Yaqub are set to come to the place where | :10:50. | :10:56.
he killed. They're coming here this evening to have a vigil later on. | :10:57. | :11:00.
But it is clear that what has happened here over the past few days | :11:01. | :11:05.
has struck a nerve in some parts of West Yorkshire communities. | :11:06. | :11:08.
The high street retailer Next has warned of tougher | :11:09. | :11:10.
conditions in the year ahead - amid uncertainty over Brexit | :11:11. | :11:13.
Shares in the company fell sharply today after reporting poor sales | :11:14. | :11:18.
in the two months up to Christmas - down 0.4%. | :11:19. | :11:23.
Our Business Correspondent Emma Simpson reports. | :11:24. | :11:29.
it's when the tills really should be ringing. | :11:30. | :11:34.
It's been a difficult one for Next, one of our biggest clothing chains. | :11:35. | :11:39.
Their Christmas results are seen as a bellwether for the High Street. | :11:40. | :11:44.
The High Street's struggling with the switch from actual selling | :11:45. | :11:46.
Struggling with coping with Black Friday, which is taking | :11:47. | :11:54.
But at the same time, Next itself is struggling, | :11:55. | :11:59.
because the big growth area at Next has been the directory. | :12:00. | :12:03.
But to have such a disappointment from one of the stronger retailers | :12:04. | :12:08.
first thing is clearly not good news. | :12:09. | :12:11.
But, as always, some will do better than others. | :12:12. | :12:14.
The signs are that it's been decent for John Lewis. | :12:15. | :12:17.
Its department stores saw a surge in sales in the final week. | :12:18. | :12:22.
Consumers haven't stopped spending, but we have been spending less | :12:23. | :12:25.
on what we wear and more on what we do. | :12:26. | :12:30.
And just little bits and bobs, and that's it. | :12:31. | :12:34.
So, yeah, it has become a lot more expensive. | :12:35. | :12:41.
We will be reining it in, in the New Year. | :12:42. | :12:43.
2016 was tough for Next, but it's warning this year | :12:44. | :12:48.
will be even tougher, with what it describes as exceptional | :12:49. | :12:50.
It says profits will be hit and that the devaluation | :12:51. | :12:54.
of the pound after the EU referendum vote will push up its prices by 5%. | :12:55. | :13:04.
And the industry's trade body also thinks the going's | :13:05. | :13:06.
2017's going to be a really challenging year for retailers. | :13:07. | :13:11.
On the one hand, you've got prices going up, | :13:12. | :13:14.
which means consumers aren't going to be able to buy as much | :13:15. | :13:17.
in shops, which is bad for both retail and the wider economy. | :13:18. | :13:20.
As consumer spending is the biggest driver of economic growth in the UK. | :13:21. | :13:23.
Retailers are also going to experience a rise in costs | :13:24. | :13:26.
of doing business from the national living wage and business rates too. | :13:27. | :13:30.
And all this is going to happen at a time of massive political | :13:31. | :13:34.
For now, though, the question is, has Next fared better or worse | :13:35. | :13:39.
than its rivals, in a market more crowded and competitive than ever? | :13:40. | :13:45.
The full Christmas story will unfold in the coming days. | :13:46. | :13:52.
Four men have been remanded in custody over a hit-and-run crash | :13:53. | :13:54.
on New Year's Eve which killed two young girls. | :13:55. | :13:58.
The two cousins - 12-year-old Helina Kotlarova | :13:59. | :14:01.
and Zaneta Krokova, who was 11 - were struck by a car close | :14:02. | :14:05.
Our correspondent Dominic Hughes is in Oldham. | :14:06. | :14:15.
What can you tell us about this. World viewers may remember the | :14:16. | :14:25.
tragic events of New Year's Eve around 7:15pm when Zaneta Krokova | :14:26. | :14:30.
and Helina Kotlarova were crossing the road behind me and were involved | :14:31. | :14:34.
in a hit-and-run. Sadly Helina died at the scene and her 11-year-old | :14:35. | :14:38.
cousin died later in hospital succumbing to her injuries. Four men | :14:39. | :14:43.
have been charged, Gabor Hegedus, 38 and from Oldham has been charged | :14:44. | :14:47.
with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, conspiracy to the | :14:48. | :14:52.
preferred the course of justice, driving without a licence and | :14:53. | :14:55.
failing to stop after a collision and failing to report that | :14:56. | :14:59.
collision. Three other men, David Orsos, Janos Kalanyos and Zoltan | :15:00. | :15:05.
Peto, all from Oldham, has also been charged with conspiracy to pervert | :15:06. | :15:08.
the course of justice and after an appearance this afternoon at the | :15:09. | :15:13.
magistrates court all four of them have been remanded in custody until | :15:14. | :15:15.
February the 1st. An Israeli soldier who shot dead | :15:16. | :15:18.
a wounded Palestinian militant has Sergeant Elor Azaria killed | :15:19. | :15:21.
Abdul Fatah al-Sharif in Hebron last March, | :15:22. | :15:26.
after the Palestinian had been involved in | :15:27. | :15:28.
stabbing another soldier. Tonight the Israeli Prime Minister | :15:29. | :15:35.
called for him to be pardoned. Our Middle East correspondent | :15:36. | :15:40.
Yolande Knell reports. It's minutes after two young | :15:41. | :15:42.
Palestinian men with knives attacked One is dead and one's | :15:43. | :15:45.
clearly still alive. Sgt Elor Azaria, | :15:46. | :15:50.
a 19-year-old medic, A single bullet to the head | :15:51. | :15:52.
killed Abdul Fatah Sharif. Today, the sergeant | :15:53. | :16:01.
was in a military court, smiling to see a friend | :16:02. | :16:04.
and his mother. But soon after, he was found | :16:05. | :16:07.
guilty of manslaughter. Judges rejected the soldiers claim | :16:08. | :16:10.
that the Palestinian posed a threat and decided he shot him | :16:11. | :16:15.
out of revenge. But Sgt Azaria has loyal backers, | :16:16. | :16:21.
in a country where most They accused the Army | :16:22. | :16:24.
of abandoning one of its own. This guy came to do an attack, | :16:25. | :16:30.
to hurt about these families. Even the Israeli Defence | :16:31. | :16:35.
Minister spoke of this Before taking up his post, he made | :16:36. | :16:41.
clear his support of Sgt Azaria. And that caused tensions | :16:42. | :16:47.
with the top brass here They have said they command | :16:48. | :16:50.
according to rules and an ethical code, | :16:51. | :16:55.
not public opinion. Such a high-profile trial | :16:56. | :16:59.
of a soldier for killing a Palestinian is very | :17:00. | :17:02.
unusual in Israel. The outcome was welcomed | :17:03. | :17:04.
by the family of Abdul Fatah Sharif. TRANSLATION: I feel | :17:05. | :17:10.
like any father would feel after seeing my son | :17:11. | :17:13.
executed on TV, murdered. It's so hard to see that, | :17:14. | :17:16.
no-one can endure this. It's still hard for me every time | :17:17. | :17:18.
I remember what happened. If he died instantly, | :17:19. | :17:22.
it would've been much easier than to see your son | :17:23. | :17:24.
executed like that. Sgt Azaria's crime took place | :17:25. | :17:27.
during a wave of Palestinian attacks, when there was a national | :17:28. | :17:30.
debate about how to respond. And his case has proved | :17:31. | :17:34.
highly divisive. When he is sentenced, | :17:35. | :17:38.
the maximum he can serve is 20 years in jail, | :17:39. | :17:40.

of muddled thinking over its Brexit A replacement's already | :18:03. | :18:04.
been announced. Thousands of holidaymakers | :18:05. | :18:10.

straight win as he warms up He was in second-round action | :18:21. | :18:26.
against Gerald Meltzer Senior military and civilian medical | :18:27. | :18:30.
experts are urging people to learn life-saving skills in case they're | :18:31. | :18:45.
caught up in a terrorist attack. They say people need to know how | :18:46. | :18:48.
to give vital first aid, such as stopping severe bleeding, | :18:49. | :18:51.
before paramedics arrive. The experts, from a team called | :18:52. | :18:56.
Citizen Aid, have launched an app And just a warning, some of you may | :18:57. | :18:59.
find images in Smitha Mundasad's What you see next | :19:00. | :19:04.
is a reconstruction. But security officials | :19:05. | :19:09.
say the terror threat in the UK is high and, | :19:10. | :19:23.
despite their best efforts, Get down! | :19:24. | :19:26.
Get down! Many people could be | :19:27. | :19:30.
hurt in the chaos. The problem is, it may take some | :19:31. | :19:33.
time for help to arrive. Police and security forces have | :19:34. | :19:36.
to deal with terrorists first, making sure it's safe, | :19:37. | :19:40.
before paramedics can come in. And in that time, | :19:41. | :19:43.
lives could be lost. The first responders to that | :19:44. | :19:48.
incident from a police perspective will inevitably be trying to deal | :19:49. | :19:51.
with the people causing the threat. They won't have time to help people | :19:52. | :19:55.
who may have been injured. And we know that that gap is vital | :19:56. | :19:59.
for saving people's lives. So we're really, really interested | :20:00. | :20:03.
in the work of Citizen Aid. There's a gunman in the street, | :20:04. | :20:08.
three people have been shot. The experts behind Citizen Aid say | :20:09. | :20:14.
the app and pocketbook give simple, step-by-step instructions | :20:15. | :20:18.
to save others. But the public should | :20:19. | :20:22.
only attempt first aid The app says that you need | :20:23. | :20:25.
to pack the wound. And then keep the hand | :20:26. | :20:33.
elevated above her heart. I've treated hundreds | :20:34. | :20:40.
of soldiers over the years And many of their lives have been | :20:41. | :20:43.
saved by simply the application of tourniquets when they've been shot | :20:44. | :20:49.
or have been blown up. I think it's essential | :20:50. | :20:52.
that we train the general public now to be able | :20:53. | :20:55.
to deliver those skills. That's exactly what | :20:56. | :20:57.
Citizen Aid does. It may be difficult, | :20:58. | :21:03.
but remaining calm and knowing how to help others | :21:04. | :21:08.
in situations like this could Security forces are already | :21:09. | :21:10.
preparing for these types of incidents, and now they say | :21:11. | :21:16.
members of the public Attempting first aid may | :21:17. | :21:19.
not be for everyone, but military medics say it's | :21:20. | :21:30.
better to have a plan, in case this worst-case | :21:31. | :21:33.
scenario turns into reality. You're OK, are you? | :21:34. | :21:37.
Is that your mum? She'll be fine. | :21:38. | :21:40.
Once we've got this on, it'll stop. For more information | :21:41. | :21:43.

Civil Aviation Authority says the company's brands - | :22:03. | :22:05.
Voyages of Discovery and Swan Hellenic - | :22:06. | :22:07.
have industry protection so customers will be able | :22:08. | :22:09.
to get home. Our personal finance correspondent | :22:10. | :22:12.
Simon Gompertz is here. They seem to have had plenty of | :22:13. | :22:22.
bookings, so how did they get into this state? The drop in the pound | :22:23. | :22:27.
has affected a lot of holiday companies selling overseas holidays. | :22:28. | :22:32.
Also, they had quite small boats, only a few hundred passengers each, | :22:33. | :22:37.
so harder to make money out of them. And they were offering cruises in | :22:38. | :22:40.
the eastern Mediterranean, where there have been worries about | :22:41. | :22:45.
terrorism. So quite a fight for survival, and now 13,000 bookings | :22:46. | :22:49.
have been cancelled. Very disappointing for those customers | :22:50. | :22:53.
who are not going to be able to go on those holidays, but virtually all | :22:54. | :22:56.
of them will be able to claim the money back. Several hundred have | :22:57. | :23:01.
just finished a cruise in Malaysia, their tickets and flights home will | :23:02. | :23:05.
be valid. The question for some people is should we now be booking | :23:06. | :23:10.
cruise holidays given that has happened? The industry have assured | :23:11. | :23:16.
us that most of the companies are huge international concerns with | :23:17. | :23:19.
boats carrying thousands of passengers, easier to make money | :23:20. | :23:24.
from them, and ?2 billion a year is going into cruising and should keep | :23:25. | :23:28.
the business afloat. Where there is a problem, a lot of consumer | :23:29. | :23:32.
protection means your money should be safe. | :23:33. | :23:33.

The whole project had been quite exciting, | :25:20. | :25:24.
as you could imagine, for an 11-year-old boy. | :25:25. | :25:27.
I was really keen not to miss any of the action. | :25:28. | :25:29.
We were just of the feeling that he'd just about got | :25:30. | :25:32.
through the magic kilometre and broken the record when the front | :25:33. | :25:36.
end of the boat lifted and, of course, Bluebird turned over | :25:37. | :25:39.
Today, at his grave nearby, Gina Campbell remembered | :25:40. | :25:45.
And it was beyond those days of risk assessment | :25:46. | :25:52.
And, you know, he went out and he did what he did. | :25:53. | :25:58.
He did it most times with huge success. | :25:59. | :26:00.
And just this one time it went a bit wrong. | :26:01. | :26:03.
Half a century on, Donald Campbell's name is celebrated by enthusiasts | :26:04. | :26:07.
who also gathered in Coniston today to pay tribute to him. | :26:08. | :26:12.
He's a very popular man, his legacy is tremendous. | :26:13. | :26:15.
50 years ago today, he was trying to do 300 miles an hour. | :26:16. | :26:19.
It's a really tough record, as tragically it proved here. | :26:20. | :26:27.
Campbell's legendary Bluebird was finally lifted out of the water | :26:28. | :26:31.

Volunteers have been working painstakingly to restore it. | :26:38. | :26:40.
And it's hoped that, before too long, | :26:41. | :26:43.
Donald Campbell's family and fans say that would be a fitting tribute | :26:44. | :26:50.
to the eight-times world record holder who they remember as a hero. | :26:51. | :27:01.
Time for a look at the weather. Here's Louise Lear. | :27:02. | :27:07.
This time tomorrow, we will all be talking about the feel of the | :27:08. | :27:13.
weather. The cause of this weather front sinking south-west as we | :27:14. | :27:17.
speak. It is the dividing line between milder cloudy conditions to | :27:18. | :27:21.
the south-west and colder air but sunny conditions in the north. The | :27:22. | :27:26.
mild air does not go far, and is set to return on Friday. But cold air | :27:27. | :27:31.
syncing South, plummeting south as we speak. Rather windy across the | :27:32. | :27:36.
North Sea coast, showers in Lincolnshire and East Anglia. Some | :27:37. | :27:39.
icy stretches likely, but further inland the talking point will be the | :27:40. | :27:43.
temperatures, falling below freezing in towns and city centres. In rural | :27:44. | :27:50.
spots, lows of -7. With the exception of the far south-west. The | :27:51. | :27:53.
weather front is still sitting there, the odd spot above freezing | :27:54. | :27:59.
tomorrow. Elsewhere, sparkling skies, a beautiful start. A hard | :28:00. | :28:03.
frost, you will need to break the fast from the windscreen 's first | :28:04. | :28:07.
thing. Maybe not in Northern Ireland, a bit more cloud and milder | :28:08. | :28:12.
air. In Scotland, not quite as windy as the last few days. Hopefully not | :28:13. | :28:17.
as many showers as well. Perhaps a few across East Anglia first thing | :28:18. | :28:22.
but they will fade away. Despite the frost lifting and some lovely | :28:23. | :28:25.
sunshine coming in, much of the day will feel quite raw. A southerly | :28:26. | :28:30.
wind will bring more cloud and a milder feel, seven or 8 degrees, but | :28:31. | :28:35.
for many people the temperatures just above freezing. A short sharp | :28:36. | :28:41.
shock, the cold feel, because a south-westerly breeze takes over and | :28:42. | :28:45.
drags in the weather fronts from the Atlantic. Some heavy rain on Friday | :28:46. | :28:50.
across west facing posts, becoming lighter as it sinks south-eastwards. | :28:51. | :28:54.
Noticeably milder, and the mild weather is here to stay for the | :28:55. | :28:55.
weekend. That's all from the BBC News at Six | :28:56. | :28:58.
- so it's goodbye from me - | :28:59. | :29:00. |
