A BBC investigation reveals how children in their own homes

:00:00.:00:08.

are being groomed by abusers online.

:00:09.:00:11.

Children as young as nine are being drawn into sexual

:00:12.:00:17.

conversations on the Periscope app owned by Twitter.

:00:18.:00:19.

To see children as young as nine, so vulnerable, and being so clearly

:00:20.:00:32.

We'll be looking at why such abuse isn't being stopped.

:00:33.:00:36.

Panic as an earthquake hits the holiday island of Kos.

:00:37.:00:39.

There's been a lot of talk in the media about holding Trump

:00:40.:00:49.

accountable, I'm here to tell you it goes two ways we're going to hold

:00:50.:00:52.

Donald Trump's press secretary, controversial and much

:00:53.:00:55.

Farmers are told they will get EU subsidies post Brexit -

:00:56.:01:01.

And in the golf, Rory McIlroy moves up the leaderboard

:01:02.:01:05.

And coming up on BBC News, Chris Froome closes in on an historic

:01:06.:01:18.

fourth Tour de France title as he holds onto the leader 's yellow

:01:19.:01:19.

jersey with two stages to go. Good evening and welcome

:01:20.:01:38.

to the BBC News at Six. A BBC Investigation has found

:01:39.:01:42.

evidence of children as young as nine being groomed on the live

:01:43.:01:44.

streaming app Periscope. Launched just two years ago it

:01:45.:01:48.

allows its millions of users to broadcast live from their phones

:01:49.:01:51.

- and can reveal their location. But our team found children

:01:52.:01:58.

streaming video live from their classrooms

:01:59.:02:00.

and even their bedrooms - and clearly being groomed

:02:01.:02:01.

for sexual abuse. Despite this, Twitter -

:02:02.:02:03.

which owns the app - claims it has "zero tolerance"

:02:04.:02:06.

for this kind of conduct. Our correspondent Angus

:02:07.:02:08.

Crawford investigates. Not learning, but broadcasting,

:02:09.:02:12.

live from the back of a lesson. But this isn't just

:02:13.:02:17.

an innocent chat. We found pupils live

:02:18.:02:28.

streaming across the country. And they've all been using this -

:02:29.:02:38.

Periscope, an app owned by Twitter, which allows users to broadcast

:02:39.:02:42.

live from anywhere. And our investigation found children

:02:43.:02:44.

using it in their own bedrooms and being groomed in front

:02:45.:02:47.

of our eyes. This child is still in her school

:02:48.:02:55.

uniform, probably 12, Talking straight into the camera

:02:56.:02:57.

and there is one, two, three, four, five, six,

:02:58.:03:06.

seven requests already. One of them is asking

:03:07.:03:12.

the size of her bra. Someone has just asked her

:03:13.:03:15.

to unbutton her shirt. The age limit is meant to be

:03:16.:03:23.

13, but we easily find So right now it's my first

:03:24.:03:25.

time playing this app. What do you mean by,

:03:26.:03:36.

"Up top, please?" We passed the details of all these

:03:37.:03:48.

children to the police, and showed what we found

:03:49.:03:51.

to the NSPCC's head Well, it's very

:03:52.:03:53.

disturbing, isn't it? To see children as young as nine

:03:54.:04:02.

when they're so vulnerable and being so clearly groomed

:04:03.:04:05.

for sexual purposes What's really worrying about

:04:06.:04:07.

Periscope is the way it uses maps. If I go live from here on a street

:04:08.:04:22.

corner in west London, then anyone can zoom in and find out

:04:23.:04:26.

exactly where I am. Twitter refused an interview

:04:27.:04:34.

request, but said in a statement, "Periscope has a strong content

:04:35.:04:36.

moderation policy and encourages viewers to report comments

:04:37.:04:38.

they feel are abusive. We have zero tolerance for any form

:04:39.:04:40.

of child sexual exploitation." But our investigation showed

:04:41.:04:44.

children openly being groomed. The question for Periscope -

:04:45.:04:48.

can young people really broadcast Parents will be horrified by your

:04:49.:05:09.

investigation, Twitter claim they have zero tolerance of this kind of

:05:10.:05:12.

content, how much meaning in that statement have? When you found so

:05:13.:05:16.

much of it. The first problem you see here is a lack of

:05:17.:05:19.

accountability. We have asked Twitter several times to come on the

:05:20.:05:22.

programme and explain the situation, explain why that can happen. They

:05:23.:05:26.

refuse to put someone up for interview. It leads three really

:05:27.:05:30.

central issues we all need to be aware of. Age verification permit

:05:31.:05:38.

clear if you can count and have access to a phone you can get a

:05:39.:05:40.

periscope account whatever your age. Then there is moderation, we've

:05:41.:05:42.

shown their live content moderation system simply isn't working as it

:05:43.:05:45.

should. Finally, a job for all of us, education. As parents, knowing

:05:46.:05:48.

social media now as we do, we have to educate our children that they

:05:49.:05:53.

think they are streaming live from the privy seal their own bedroom,

:05:54.:05:56.

but they're actually broadcasting to a world full of people they simply

:05:57.:05:58.

don't know. Angus, thanks very much. British holidaymakers have been

:05:59.:06:02.

describing scenes of panic as a powerful earthquake struck

:06:03.:06:04.

the Greek island of Kos. Two people have been killed

:06:05.:06:06.

and at least 100 people The quake, with a

:06:07.:06:08.

magnitude of 6 point 7, also caused floods in the streets

:06:09.:06:12.

of the Turkish resort of Bodrum. Our correspondent Mark Lowen reports

:06:13.:06:14.

from the Aegean coast. 1:30am in the Turkish

ripped from our sleep. The bed shook uncontrollably,

:07:08.:07:10.

the room shook from side to side. At first light, the damage

:07:11.:07:12.

in Kos was clear. Parts of the cathedral

:07:13.:07:22.

were turned to rubble. It was rebuilt 80 years ago

:07:34.:07:45.

smash from the living room, so we got up and you were swaying

:07:46.:07:48.

from side to side, literally. In Bodrum, fishing boats

:07:49.:07:51.

were upturned by the tremor. 200 Turkish nationals

:07:52.:07:54.

Blair Logan, who's 27, had a "hostile relationship"

:08:47.:08:50.

with his younger brother Cameron. Suffolk Police say an extensive

:08:51.:08:56.

search of a landfill site has failed to find the remains

:08:57.:08:59.

of a missing RAF airman. Corrie McKeague disappeared last

:09:00.:09:01.

September after a night out CCTV cameras showed him

:09:02.:09:04.

going into a bin loading bay. After 20 weeks and having sifted

:09:05.:09:18.

through thousands of tonnes of rubbish at this landfill site in

:09:19.:09:22.

Cambridge, the police have turned up nothing. It's tough, it's dirty,

:09:23.:09:26.

it's expensive, but now, says the officer in charge, it has to stop.

:09:27.:09:31.

We searched over six and a half thousand tonnes of waste, excavating

:09:32.:09:35.

a huge area. Without anything further to tell us where he might be

:09:36.:09:40.

on such a vast site, the search cannot continue. 22-year-old Corey

:09:41.:09:46.

Micki disappeared during a night out in Bury St Edmunds. He told friends

:09:47.:09:50.

he would walk home but never made it to the RAF base nearby. Months of

:09:51.:09:56.

searching led nowhere though police knew his phone seem to track the

:09:57.:09:59.

path of a bin lorry and that took them to the landfill site. His

:10:00.:10:03.

disappearance prompted a huge social media campaign. His family crowd

:10:04.:10:07.

thundered their own investigation. Six weeks ago his girlfriend April,

:10:08.:10:11.

who was pregnant at the time he went missing, revealed she'd had his

:10:12.:10:15.

daughter. For his mum, Nicola, herself a police officer in

:10:16.:10:18.

Scotland, stopping the search is hard to accept. I do believe they

:10:19.:10:23.

should search the area and be able to come back and say that either he

:10:24.:10:29.

is in their or he's not. How can they just leave him in there? If...

:10:30.:10:38.

How can they just leave him in there? His family said they would be

:10:39.:10:42.

happy to use the fund to pay for more searching and say they are

:10:43.:10:46.

urging the police not to close this investigation because a breakthrough

:10:47.:10:47.

could be just inches away. Donald Trump's press secretary

:10:48.:10:52.

Sean Spicer has resigned. It follows the US president's

:10:53.:10:54.

appointment of a former Wall Street banker as his

:10:55.:10:56.

new head of communications. Mr Spicer has been much lampooned

:10:57.:10:58.

in the past as he found himself trying to defend the president

:10:59.:11:02.

against a sceptical press. One of Hollywood's biggest stars

:11:03.:11:05.

appeared regularly on US Our chief correspondent

:11:06.:11:07.

Gavin Hewitt has more. A dramatic day at the White House.

:11:08.:11:20.

Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, and one of the faces of

:11:21.:11:22.

the Trump administration, has resigned. Spicer has been involved

:11:23.:11:28.

in a number of high profile controversies. Early on he found

:11:29.:11:32.

himself having to defend the crowd size at Donald Trump's inauguration,

:11:33.:11:37.

compared to that of Barack Obama. This was the largest audience to

:11:38.:11:39.

ever witnessed an inauguration period, both in person and around

:11:40.:11:47.

the globe. The pictures clearly suggested otherwise. Then there were

:11:48.:11:51.

Sean Spicer's about comments Hitler and the use of chemical weapons that

:11:52.:11:57.

drew international criticism. We didn't use chemical weapons in World

:11:58.:12:01.

War II, you know, you had a... You know, someone as despicable as

:12:02.:12:04.

Hitler, who didn't even think to the, to the using chemical weapons.

:12:05.:12:10.

Sean Spicer found himself under close scrutiny from Donald Trump,

:12:11.:12:14.

who prices good on camera performances. In particular

:12:15.:12:17.

President Trump began looking for a strong defender as his problems

:12:18.:12:21.

mounted, in particular with the investigation into whether there was

:12:22.:12:24.

collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during last year's

:12:25.:12:32.

election. So today the president appointed Anthony Scaramucci. A Wall

:12:33.:12:35.

Street financier, as his communications director. Shortly

:12:36.:12:41.

after Sean Spicer abruptly resigned, suggesting some turmoil inside the

:12:42.:12:45.

White House. In recent times there were indications Sean Spicer was

:12:46.:12:50.

being sidelined. He was giving fewer and fewer on camera briefings. But

:12:51.:12:54.

his allies say there was a deeper problem. He was out there defending

:12:55.:12:59.

White House policy only for the President himself to issue a treat

:13:00.:13:02.

later that seemed to change the plans. Today's moves indicate that

:13:03.:13:08.

Donald Trump, under pressure, sees the need to have an able

:13:09.:13:12.

communicator who will both defend and fight for his presidency. Gavin

:14:02.:14:04.

since the outbreak started, there have been more

:14:05.:14:07.

than 360,000 suspected cases. Yemen has become a breeding ground

:14:08.:14:10.

for the disease after two years of a devastating civil war that has

:14:11.:14:15.

split the country between a Saudi-led government coalition

:14:16.:14:18.

and Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Few communities have been left

:14:19.:14:21.

untouched by the disease, but the worst hit areas

:14:22.:14:25.

are controlled by Houthi rebels and suffer the most

:14:26.:14:27.

from a blockade of food and aid. Nawal Al-Maghafi has been

happen more quickly. Mr Gove promised a new law

cabinet is in agreement that there should be a period of adjustment

:19:56.:19:58.

after Brexit so that businesses have access to the migrant workers they

:19:59.:20:02.

need, but our Deputy political editor is in Westminster for us this

:20:03.:20:07.

evening. Does make the Government's position clearer? There has been a

:20:08.:20:10.

lot of squabbling in the Cabinet lately but there has been more

:20:11.:20:15.

agreement over the shape of Brexit. For now, Brexit is still a work in

:20:16.:20:19.

progress. There is broad agreement now on the importance of keeping

:20:20.:20:20.

trade moving freely as now between Britain and

:20:21.:20:40.

Europe during a transitional period of perhaps two years. The Chancellor

:20:41.:20:43.

and a lot of civil servants would like that period to be a lot longer.

:20:44.:20:46.

Business will need that time to adjust to a new custom system and

:20:47.:20:49.

there is a worry that a sudden lurch into a new system could hit

:20:50.:20:51.

investment. Ultimately, it will be about the negotiations in Brussels.

:20:52.:20:53.

As far as freedom of movement of people is concerned, there has been

:20:54.:20:56.

no real discussion. Not in Cabinet, not in Cabinet committee. That still

:20:57.:20:59.

has to be worked out but it is a political quagmire which raises

:21:00.:21:01.

questions of the rights of EU citizens and also British citizens.

:21:02.:21:06.

It could upset Tory MPs who do not want freedom of movement to go on

:21:07.:21:10.

for one minute longer. This is a political quagmire on the road to

:21:11.:21:14.

Brexit which will have to be resolved. As David Davis said the

:21:15.:21:17.

other day, the clock is ticking. He is right about that. So much still

:21:18.:21:22.

to do and now so little time. Thank you.

The gateways to South Wales, carrying 25 million vehicles across

:21:42.:21:43.

But the tolls are described as a tax on

:21:44.:21:47.

When the crossings return to public ownership next

:21:48.:21:52.

This haulage company based in Newport says it will make a

:21:53.:22:00.

difference, but it also wants to see other improvements being made.

:22:01.:22:08.

More specifically, it would be a cost saving to us.

:22:09.:22:10.

We use the bridge probably ten, 12, 15 times a day.

:22:11.:22:13.

But we have to make sure that the infrastructure to support the

:22:14.:22:17.

increase in traffic that we're likely to see it in place to support

:22:18.:22:20.

Just six months ago, the Secretary of State for Wales had

:22:21.:22:24.

planned to simply reduce the tolls, retaining

:22:25.:22:26.

a fee to fund the cost of

:22:27.:22:27.

Ultimately, this is the UK taxpayer that's

:22:28.:22:32.

looking after an important part of infrastructure.

:22:33.:22:36.

It's a strategic piece of infrastructure that binds

:22:37.:22:38.

The clients in Bristol have sold a small

:22:39.:22:45.

They are buying this property which is

:22:46.:22:48.

It's making moving to live in Wales a more attractive

:22:49.:22:53.

But at this estate agent's, just a few miles away,

:22:54.:23:13.

they recognise it could have an impcat on schools

:23:14.:23:19.

What we're finding is a lot of the people who are now

:23:20.:23:23.

looking over here have been searching in Bristol where the house

:23:24.:23:26.

prices are a lot more expensive, so the news about the Severn Bridge

:23:27.:23:29.

has suddenly brought Chepstow into their

:23:30.:23:30.

I feel that, yes, it's great to have this increase in

:23:31.:23:34.

housing activity, but we do need support in terms of infrastructure

:23:35.:23:37.

Congestion and slow-moving traffic costs business dear.

:23:38.:23:40.

Infrastructure in South Wales is currently under

:23:41.:23:41.

The UK Government has accused ministers in Cardiff of

:23:42.:23:45.

dragging their feet over plans for a new motorway.

:23:46.:23:47.

But it was only yesterday the UK Transport Secretary

:23:48.:23:49.

announced that rail electrification plans from Cardiff

:23:50.:23:51.

to Swansea have been shelved.

:23:52.:23:52.

Removing these barriers is designed to keep the Welsh economy

:23:53.:23:54.

But there's concern that without further

:23:55.:23:57.

infrastructure changes there could be gridlock to come.

:23:58.:23:59.

Sian Lloyd, BBC News, on the Severn Crossing.

It's day two of the Open golf and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy

:24:02.:24:03.

has found some form at last, moving up the leader board

:24:04.:24:06.

Our sports correspondent Andy Swiss is at Royal Birkdale for us.

:24:07.:24:10.

Fiona. Welcome to Royal Birkdale, where the golfers have been battling

:24:11.:24:24.

the elements. We have had wind and rain and some grim conditions out

:24:25.:24:28.

there. As you say, it has been a good day for Rory McIlroy. After a

:24:29.:24:34.

terrible start yesterday, he is back in contention.

:24:35.:24:36.

It was 'bring a brolly day' at Birkdale, as fans arrived

:24:37.:24:38.

Grey skies and blustery winds - tough for watching,

:24:39.:24:43.

The man at the top didn't seem to mind,

:24:44.:24:47.

The man at the top didn't seem to mind, as America's Matt Kuchar

:24:48.:24:50.

Yesterday, Rory McIlroy had one of the worst

:24:51.:25:01.

A trio of early birdies as he continued on to

:25:02.:25:06.

A man who seemed down and out, back in with a fighting chance.

:25:07.:25:10.

I continued where I left off last night and made some birdies.

:25:11.:25:13.

I did exactly what I wanted to do, get in and finish the tournament

:25:14.:25:16.

under par for the first two days, and we'll watch to see

:25:17.:25:19.

Well, as the winds strengthened, they struggled.

:25:20.:25:27.

Charl Schwartzel's ball actually being blown away.

:25:28.:25:29.

One of the home favourites firing up the fans.

:25:30.:25:33.

And he wasn't the only Englishman on the leaderboard.

:25:34.:25:35.

Richard Bland, playing his first Open for 19 years.

:25:36.:25:45.

They say the best things come to those who wait.

:25:46.:25:50.

As things turned soggy, though, Jordan Spieth's golf at least

:25:51.:25:52.

But the day's most magical moment belonged to Chris Wood.

:25:53.:25:57.

Just when he needed it, this on the very last hole.

:25:58.:25:59.

Surely the definition of a grandstand finish.

:26:00.:26:11.

And the latest is that Jordan Spieth leads the way. As for Rory McIlroy,

:26:12.:26:22.

he is now five off the pace, but his hopes are still very much alive.

:26:23.:26:29.

Thank you very much. Royal visits can be tiring for even experienced

:26:30.:26:32.

members of the family, but for Princess Charlotte it all proved a

:26:33.:26:39.

bit too much. As they prepare to leave Hamburg this afternoon, there

:26:40.:26:43.

were a few tears on the tarmac and some finger wagging, but her mother

:26:44.:26:49.

offered some comforting words to bring the tantrum to a happy end.

:26:50.:26:51.

Best behaviour, please. The weather is not behaving itself, though. This

:26:52.:27:06.

is a small tree that came down on a road there and it has really been

:27:07.:27:09.

very windy today and also with some heavy rain. This picture came in

:27:10.:27:14.

from Devon, where it has been very blustery. This is the reason for it.

:27:15.:27:22.

This low pressure. And it will remain unsettled through the

:27:23.:27:27.

weekend. It will be very unsettled with frequent showers and some of us

:27:28.:27:32.

will miss them but some will get a downpour. Let's have a look at the

:27:33.:27:37.

picture for now. Here is the rainfall. The wind is not so strong

:27:38.:27:41.

inland. It is around the coastal areas where we have had the blustery

:27:42.:27:47.

wind. There will be some clear spells overnight, so not that bad.

:27:48.:27:53.

13-14dC. No pressure will be with us through the weekend. This is a

:27:54.:27:57.

snapshot of Saturday. The main area of brain that we had today may have

:27:58.:28:03.

gone by then, but this area of low pressure will be producing further

:28:04.:28:08.

showers during the day. This is a snapshot of the morning. It is clear

:28:09.:28:14.

in places. This is what is left over the weather front, so the morning is

:28:15.:28:21.

looking mixed. 15-16dC. Into the afternoon, we can see lots of

:28:22.:28:26.

showers developing across parts of Wales and central England. So many

:28:27.:28:30.

of us tomorrow will get a downpour or two. In the North of Scotland,

:28:31.:28:36.

the weather is not looking bad. Northern Ireland also looking

:28:37.:28:40.

decent. Here is the for Sunday. Some areas of rain. Take a number like if

:28:41.:28:45.

you are heading out just in case you need to run for cover. Goodbye.

:28:46.:28:48.

A BBC investigation has revealed how young children are being groomed by

:28:49.:29:00.

users of a Twitter owned live streaming application.

:29:01.:29:03.

So it's goodbye from me, and on BBC One we now join the BBC's

:29:04.:29:05.
