Tonight at Six - Theresa May
is about to face a show-down | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
with her own MPs over what role
Parliament will play | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
in the Brexit process. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
We will put the final
withdrawal agreement, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
betweent the UK and EU,
to a vote in both | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
Houses of Parliament. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
But that's not enough for Tory
rebels - they want a guarantee | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
that they will have the power
to send ministers back | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
to the negotiating table. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
It's not for Parliament to simply
roll over and accept something | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
because the Government says
that's what we should do. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
The debate is taking place right now
- we'll have the latest. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
Also tonight. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40

today than they did 11 years ago. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11

going into Third Test in Perth -
captain Joe Root calls on big | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
performances from his players. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:29
Good evening and welcome
to the BBC News at Six. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
In the next hour or so Theresa May
faces a crunch vote | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
on her Brexit plans. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
Several of her own MPs have joined
Labour in demanding parliament has | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
the power to send ministers back
to the negotiating table if it | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
doesn't like the final deal
between the UK and the EU. | 0:01:55 | 0:02:00
So far the Prime Minister has
offered what she's called | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
a "meaningful vote" -
but is that enough or will she have | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
to make a concession
in order to avoid a defeat. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Our political editor,
Laura Kuenssberg is in Westminster. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:07
Thank you. There has been a lot of
fuss, froth, but this is really | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
about is how much power is the
Government willing to give MPs over | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
the final Brexit deal? For a long
time ministers have said of course | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
you will have a vote, of course it
will be meaningful, of course you | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
will have a say, but the Labour
Party, the SNP, the Liberal | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
Democrats and a crucial group of
Tory potential rebels want a legal | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
promise now, they will not just have
a vote, but they will have a vote | 0:02:37 | 0:02:42
before the deal is signed. Now the
numbers look extremely tight but it | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
is possible that the Government will
tonight be forced to do so. But it's | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
the determination of the Tory rebels
that will really make the | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
difference. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
Look at the Chancellor's little
list. At the top of a sheaf of paper | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
the names of the Tory rebels who
might beat their party bosses tone. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:07
Nicky, Anna, Dominic and the rest.
Only their first names, those former | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
ministers who have been trying for
weeks to have their say. . Would she | 0:03:11 | 0:03:19
be so good as to help the Right
Honourable and learned gentleman's | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
amended seven in the spirit of unity
for everybody here and in the | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
country.
We will ensure there is a meaningful | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
vote on this, in this House, there
will be be an opportunity for | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Parliament to look at the withdrawal
agreement and implementation bill. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:40
What does that all mean? About 20
Tory MPs, the opposition parties and | 0:03:40 | 0:03:46
these hardy campaigners. Are
demanding so-called amendment seven. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
That is a legal promise from the
Government today, that MPs will have | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
the chance to vote and debate the
deal between Britain and the rest of | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
the EU. And crucially, before it's
signed. Stop Brexit. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:07
The Government says there will be a
vote but there isn't much trust they | 0:04:07 | 0:04:12
will stick to it. The former
Attorney General who is leading the | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
charge says it has got rough. Large
number of people telling one is a | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
traitor, some I have to say with
regret of one's honourable and right | 0:04:19 | 0:04:25
honourable friend saying things I
fight startling. He is engage in | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30
this seriously but there is no
getting around the timing issue we | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
have got The debate is whether
honourable members are content that | 0:04:34 | 0:04:40
Parliament be a spectator, a passive
observer into one of the most | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
important decisions that has faced
or country in generations. They are | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
adamant they shouldn't bundle but it
is bad-tempered look at this row | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
inside the same political party.
This article, clause nine, is not | 0:04:54 | 0:05:00
about implementing leaving the
European Union. It is. No, no. Read | 0:05:00 | 0:05:05
it. Read it.
Sit down. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
I am not capable of hearing what my
honourable friend is saying, because | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
there seems to be an inordinate
racquet being made behind me. There | 0:05:14 | 0:05:20
is deep suspicion, those who wanted
to stay in the EU are trying to | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
rerun the referendum. If people in
in House use that amendment for | 0:05:24 | 0:05:29
those purposes, the backlash from
the British public will be like none | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
seen before, he should be
beware/that. The idea this | 0:05:34 | 0:05:40
undermines the referendum decision
is rubbish and he knows it. If he | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
had any better arguments he would
put them rather than using something | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
that is so ridiculous. But it's a
stand-off so far. The Downing Street | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
machine, determined not to move.
Instead, an offensive, maybe with | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
charm, to talk the rebels round.
What it is going to take? Not much | 0:05:56 | 0:06:02
sign they are in any mood to back
down It is unpleasant. I never hope | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
to be in the situation, but I, you
know I think that a number of us | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
have made the point for the last
probably three months, that this is | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
the amendment we think is incredibly
important. This clash has been | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
brewing for weeks. If Number Ten
lose, it would be the first time | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
Theresa May has been beaten this
way. Has the Government done enough | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
to beat the rebels? At the moment
for arm twisting and arguments is | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
nearly gone.
The vote is expected at round 7.00, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
and I hear in the last couple of
minutes just along there, three of | 0:06:33 | 0:06:39
the key rebels have just left the
Commons chamber apparently after | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
they were passed a note from one of
Theresa May's most important aides, | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
so there is a chance some last
minute skullduggery could mean a | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
concession from the Government or a
compromise on behalf of the rebel, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
but it may well be George, in the
last hour, that Theresa May is | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
beaten in the House of Commons, on
her own plans, that would be the | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
first time this has happened since
she has been in power, and on the | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
eve of that vital EU summit in
Brussels, Frank lit would be a blow | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
to her authority, that she could
well do without. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
Chris Froome, Britain's most
successful road cyclist, is tonight | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
fighting to clear his name after it
emerged that he's | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
failed a drug test. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
The four time Tour de France winner
is being investigated by cycling's | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
world governing body after a urine
sample taken in Spain earlier this | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
year showed he had twice
the permitted amount of an asthma | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
medication in his system. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:29
Our sports editor Dan Roan reports. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:39
Having come to dominate cycling's
biggest race Chris Froome's | 0:07:39 | 0:07:43
established himself as the
pre-eminent force in his sport but | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
the British star faces a fight to
save his reputation. It was here | 0:07:46 | 0:07:51
during his historic victory at
Spain's grand tour the Vuelta that | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
he was found to have exceeded the
permitted legal level of the asthma | 0:07:55 | 0:08:00
drug salbutamol. He says on doctors
advice he increased his dosage due | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
asthma, in a statement he said I
took the greatest care to ensure I | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
did not use more than the
permissible dose. I take my | 0:08:09 | 0:08:13
leadership position very seriously. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
Team Sky say that Froome, who has
had asthma since childhood was | 0:08:19 | 0:08:25
suffering from acute symptoms in the
final week of the Vuelta and he was | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
asked about his health immediately
after the 18th stage of the race on | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
the day he provided the irregular
sample. Speculation about whether | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
you are ill. You said no yesterday.
100% fit and healthy today I felt | 0:08:35 | 0:08:41
fine today, yes. Riders can take
salbutamol up to a certain limit but | 0:08:41 | 0:08:47
Froome's sample showed traces twice
the permitted amount. In a statement | 0:08:47 | 0:08:52
Team Sky boss said:
If you are dehydrated your level | 0:08:52 | 0:09:04
will be higher, the speed he can
metabolise through his system, if he | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
does that fast, it will increase the
level in his urine, so it is | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
difficult to sort of say if I take
four puffs I know my level will be | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
this, it is difficult to say that on
daily basis. Scrutiny on Team Sky | 0:09:16 | 0:09:22
has intensified with management
grilled at a Parliamentary zitty | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
hearing and a UK anti-doping
investigation into allegations all | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
denied and not proven surrounding a
mystery medical delivery to Bradley | 0:09:30 | 0:09:35
Wigans in 2011. Froome has taken a
strong moral stance on the use of | 0:09:35 | 0:09:42
TUEs for usually banned substances.
I think it does enormous damage, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:47
people will listen to everything we
are saying about hearings and they | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
won't care, as far as they are
concerned it is another thing that | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
has happened to Team Sky and cycling
as far as the reputation of cycling | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
is concerned it is damaging. 2018
was meant to be the year Froome | 0:09:58 | 0:10:03
would attempt a fifth tour the
France triumph. Instead with the | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
threat of a ban and the potential
loss of his Spanish title hanging | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
over him he is riding into an
uncertain future. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:15
In cycling terms he is simply as big
as it gets. He is British sport's | 0:10:15 | 0:10:21
most successful current star, ehis
name will be among the lists of | 0:10:21 | 0:10:27
favourites in the Sports Personality
of the Year award. He faces an | 0:10:27 | 0:10:32
anxious wait as does Team Sky. They
are busy trying to recover their | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
reputation, after a series of
controversy, they built their brand | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
round Froome and their stated zero
tolerance policy towards doping but | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
they will by a wear in the past
riders have faced bans of up to a | 0:10:43 | 0:10:48
year for having that substance in
their systems at excess levels. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:53
After such a deeply troubled past
with cheatling, Chris Froome was | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
symbolic of a brave new clean era
for cycling, so there is a huge | 0:10:57 | 0:11:02
amount at stake here, for the man
and his team, but also for the sport | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
at large. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
A fourth child has died after a fire
at a house in the Walkden area | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
of Greater Manchester. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
Lia Pearson was just
three years old. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:14
Two people have appeared in court,
charged with murder. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
Zac Bolland, who is 23,
and 20-year old Courtney Brierley | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
were were remanded in custody
until their case moves | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
to the Crown Court on Thursday -
as our correspondent Danny Savage | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
reports. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:32
The sad remains of this house
are still the subject | 0:11:32 | 0:11:34
of detailed examination. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:35
And now a fourth child
from the Pearson family has died | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
after Monday's fire. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:39
The death of three-year-old
Lia Pearson this afternoon comes | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
as two people were charged
with murder, in relation | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
to what happened here. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
They both appeared before
magistrates in Manchester today. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
23-year-old Zac Bolland
and 20-year-old Courtney Brierley | 0:11:50 | 0:11:56
are charged with the murders
of three children, | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
and the attempted murder
of their mother, Michelle Pearson, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
and three other children. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:02
But those charges are
likely to change now that | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
Lia Pearson has also died. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:09
Her eight-year-old brother Brandon
and seven-year-old sister | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
Lacie died in hospital,
following the blaze. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
Their sister, 15-year-old
Demi Pearson, died at the scene. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Today, the head teacher
of her school talked | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
about what had happened. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:26
Demi was a great kid, great student,
fun-loving, extremely popular, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
popular with all the kids in school
and very popular outside | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
of school as well. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:32
Obviously, it's a tragic,
tragic life has the been cut short. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:38
Michelle Pearson is still seriously
ill in hospital, unaware that four | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
of her children are now dead. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
Police say their investigation
has moved quickly since | 0:12:43 | 0:12:49
the fire on Monday. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
No details of what happened
here then were heard in court today, | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
but now people will have to try
and come to terms with the death | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
of another child in this tragedy. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
Danny Savage, BBC News,
Walkden in Greater Manchester. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:06
The comedian Peter Kay has cancelled
all work commitments | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
because of what he's called
"unforeseen family circumstances." | 0:13:08 | 0:13:12
He's said the decision had not been
taken lightly, but his family | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
must always come first. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:16
He was due to do his
first live stand up tour | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
in eight years in April. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
The ringleader of a gang that used
drones to smuggle drugs, | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
phones and weapons into prisons,
has been sentenced to more | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
than seven years in jail. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:31
Craig Hickinbottom ran the operation
from inside prison where he's | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
serving a separate sentence
for armed robbery. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
The 11-strong gang organised
at least 49 drone flights, | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
smuggling goods worth more
than a million pounds. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
Our home affairs correspondent
Daniel Sandford has | 0:13:42 | 0:13:43
this exclusive report. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:53
Cameras originally set up to take
pictures of wildlife, | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
catching instead Britain's most
prolific drone smuggling gang. | 0:13:55 | 0:14:00
Recording the pilot Mervyn Foster
time and again flying the drone | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
from a field outside Hewell
prison in Worcestershire. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
Its illegal cargo hanging
underneath on fishing line. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
From the field, the smugglers had
a view directly into the jail | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
and the prison block
where the drone's cargo was pulled | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
in through the windows. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
Over the months the gang grew
in confidence and sophistication. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
They had started by simply throwing
the drugs over the prison wall. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
But then they started using drones
and they added to the contraband. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:31
Mobile phones, weapons,
screwdrivers, and even a Freeview | 0:14:31 | 0:14:36
box with a remote control. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:38
Cameras inside Hewell prison caught
one of the ringleaders, | 0:14:38 | 0:14:43
John Hickinbottom,
with an improvised hook used | 0:14:43 | 0:14:47
to catch the fishing line
and recover the contraband. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
The gang, led by armed
robber Craig Hickinbottom, | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
is thought to have smuggled in over
a million pounds worth | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
of drugs and phones,
continuing even after they had been | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
arrested and charged. | 0:14:58 | 0:14:59
The contents of the loads
on at least 49 flights | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
were specifically ordered
by individual inmates | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
from the Midlands to Scotland. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:09
The recent epidemic of drones
being used to airlift contraband | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
into prison grew from nothing
in just four years. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:16
We didn't see this one coming. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:17
So the drones literally
came from nowhere. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
They were flown in and it actually
just was a game changer for us. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
So we had to really
relook at our systems, | 0:15:24 | 0:15:26
our procedures and methods
of gathering intelligence. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
And it gave the gangs of opportunity
to actually breach the secure | 0:15:28 | 0:15:30
perimeters almost effortlessly. | 0:15:30 | 0:15:32
To crack this case, officers
downloaded the memories | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
of the drones they seized and linked
that to mobile phone calls | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
the smugglers were making. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:37
The prisons ministers had to invest
millions of pounds in a new national | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
network of police and prison
officers, working together, | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
which helped catch this gang. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:54
What we have shown here is that this
is the most prolific | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
gang we've come across. | 0:15:57 | 0:15:58
And we've been able
to deal with them. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
They're going to be serving jail
time and that is a huge success. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
But with huge profits being made
by the smuggling gangs, | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
keeping drones away from prisons
is going to be a lengthy battle. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08

Parliament will play

And still to come... | 0:16:29 | 0:16:35
An election upset in America. The
Democrats win Alabama for the first | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
time in 25 years. Coming up on
Sportsday, we look ahead to seven | 0:16:38 | 0:16:47
games in the Premier League tonight,
with Manchester United and | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
Manchester City in action. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:51
Tomorrow, survivors and families
of the victims of the Grenfell Tower | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
fire will gather to mark six months
since the fire, in | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
which 71 people died. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
A special remembrance
service will be held | 0:17:08 | 0:17:09
at St Paul's Cathedral in London. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
This week on the News at Six,
we've featured some of those | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
affected by the fire. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:17
Tonight we hear from Nabil Choucair,
who lost his mother, sister, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
brother-in-law and three nieces
in the fire. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
I should warn you that
you may find some images | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
in this report distressing. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
I'm Nabil Choucair,
and I lost six members | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
of my family at Grenfell Tower. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
I got a call from my sister,
and I switched on the TV to see | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
the tower my sister lived in,
and my family, was on fire. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:43
When I got there they had
cordoned off the whole | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
area and they were not
allowing anyone in. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:47
I could see the whole
building on fire. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
And I was fighting to try and get
in, to try and rescue them. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
We were hoping that they were still
alive, that they had made | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
it out to a shelter,
a hospital, they had got out. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:07
I only heard from my sister,
she gave me a missed call | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
in the early hours of the morning. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
She sent a voice message saying hi,
it's Nabil, and we're in the tower. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
And it just kept going through my
mind, that I was hoping she had made | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
it out and we were still trying
to look for them, hoping that they | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
weren't still in the tower. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:32
Someone took a picture
and we were quite certain | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
that was my sister waving,
trying to get attention | 0:18:36 | 0:18:41
from the rescue team or someone,
with her husband right beside her. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:46
We just hoped that they had made it. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
When I see that tower,
I remember my family. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:55
And I remember the night
and I remember the good times | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
that we had together. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:04
It was half our life there
and they were really enjoyable, | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
they loved everybody,
they wouldn't hurt anyone. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
The kids were fantastic. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
They really enjoyed playing
with my kids so much. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
I have to keep fighting,
I will keep fighting for them. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
Because I need the answers
and I need the justice for everybody | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
that lost their lives. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:26
Their lives will not go in vain. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:31
That was Nabil Choucair -
who lost six members | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
of his family at Grenfell Tower. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:37
The latest figures on employment
and pay are out today. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
There's been a slight pick-up
in average pay rises for British | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
workers, but not enough
to keep up with inflation. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
In fact wages don't go any further
today than they did 11 years ago. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
Our economics correspondent,
Andy Verity, can explain it all. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:59
This is quite surprising, given what
is happening in the labour market? | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
Employers have a problem, they can't
find the staff. If you look at the | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
number of vacancies out there,
798,000 jobs on offer. Before the | 0:20:08 | 0:20:13
Brexit vote, you might have expected
migrant workers to fill a lot of | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
those roles. We know that
immigration is coming down, the | 0:20:17 | 0:20:21
workforce was expanding, now it is
shrinking. That should put workers | 0:20:21 | 0:20:26
in a good bargaining position to
demand higher pay rises, because the | 0:20:26 | 0:20:32
employers who need to employ people
are going to have to pay more to | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
attract and keep them. You look at
what has happened to average pay and | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
it has edged up by 2.3%, slightly
more than expected, more than last | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
time. Nowhere near enough to keep up
with price rises, which are 3.1%, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:49
the average pay packet is £478 a
week. In real terms, taking into | 0:20:49 | 0:20:55
account inflation, what pattern by
you, the slightly depressing and | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
says that it is no more than it
could buy you back in February 2006. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:03
The average pay package would buy
you the same. The jobs market may be | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
tight, but hasn't yet resulted in
inflation beating pay rises. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:12
A 15-year-old boy has admitted
causing the deaths of five people | 0:21:12 | 0:21:14
who were killed when the stolen car
they were in hit a tree in Leeds. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:18
The teenager, who cannot be
named for legal reasons, | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
appeared via video link
at Leeds Crown Court. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
He was remanded in custody ahead
of sentencing next month. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26

three children, died | 0:21:26 | 0:21:27

The Democratic party is celebrating
an unexpected victory, | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
after taking the US Senate seat
in the state of Alabama | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
for the first time in 25 years. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:43
Doug Jones beat the controversial
Republican Roy Moore | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
in a special election. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
Mr Moore - who's been accused
of assaulting teenage girls, | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
but denies the allegations -
was publicly backed | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
by President Trump. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:53
The result means the Republican
majority in the senate | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
now stands at 51-49 -
as our North America correspondent | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
Nick Bryant reports. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:07
Modern-day Democrats aren't supposed
to win staunchly conservative | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
states like Alabama. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:14
It's 25 years since that happened. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
So no wonder this blizzard
of confetti to mark the shock | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
victory of Doug Jones. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
Alabama has been at a crossroads. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
We have been at a
crossroads in the past. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
And unfortunately we have usually
taken the wrong fork. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
Tonight, ladies and gentlemen,
you took the right road! | 0:22:28 | 0:22:38
The losing Republican
candidate, Roy Moore, thought | 0:22:40 | 0:22:41
he was on his way to Washington. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
But he was hit by allegations,
which he denies, of sexual | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
misconduct against teenage girls. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:47
And shunned by senior figures
in the Republican establishment. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
That is where the anger of his
dejected supporters was directed. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
It is really sad for the people
of Alabama, what took place | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
in this state tonight. | 0:22:55 | 0:23:04
You think you have been betrayed
by the Republican establishment? | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
Absolutely. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:07
No doubt about that. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:09
You know, there was a lot
of dirty politics going on. | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
I have never seen such ugly slander,
what I believe were blatant lies. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
I have never seen such
despicable behaviour. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:16
# You can't always
get what you want... | 0:23:16 | 0:23:22
It's true. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:23
You can't always get what you want. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
A lesson for Donald Trump,
who has strongly backed Roy Moore. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
So get out and vote for Roy Moore... | 0:23:27 | 0:23:33
So this is a big black eye
for the president and also a failure | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
of the Trump political playbook. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
To deny accusations of wrongdoing
as fake news and to attack accusers. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:44
In Washington this reduces
the Republican majority in the US | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
Senate to a single seat,
making it even harder | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
for Donald Trump to get
legislation through Congress. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:54
It also boosts Democratic hopes
of winning back control | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
of Capitol Hill in congressional
elections next year. | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
A key battleground will be
the suburbs, and this | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
election revealed a weakness
there for Donald Trump amongst | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
moderate Republicans. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:10
On his Twitter feed this morning
the president was blaming a flawed | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
Republican candidate
for this humiliating defeat. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
But Donald Trump
was also a big loser. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
Nick Bryant, BBC News, Alabama. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:25
England's cricketers will be
fighting to keep their ashes | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
hopes alive tomorrow,
as they take on Australia | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
in the third test in Perth. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
England lost the first two tests
and need at least a draw | 0:24:31 | 0:24:33
to avoid a series defeat. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:35
But it'll be a tough task -
they've not won at the Waca | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
since 1978, as Andy Swiss reports. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:43
In one of the most isolated
cities in the world, | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
one of the loneliest places
for English cricket. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:53
The Waca is where so many
Ashes dreams have died. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:58
So many decades of
disappointment for England's | 0:24:58 | 0:25:00
players and their fans. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
But here, a team trailing
on the pitch and in turmoil off it | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
know they need something
extraordinary. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
It's an opportunity
to create history. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
It's a real chance to flip
the dynamic of this series | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
on its head and, if we do come away
2-1 from this game, it does blow | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
the series wide open. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:23
Well, for England over the years
the Waca has normally | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
lived up to its name. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
They've lost their last seven tests
here and they've arrived for this | 0:25:29 | 0:25:31
one with not just their cricket,
but their conduct | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
under the spotlight. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:39
The latest barroom incident,
in which bowler Jimmy Anderson had | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
a drink poured over him,
has given Australia's headline | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
writers another field day. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:46
And some believe the culture
of the team needs to change. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:50
They do behave like students. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
You know, when they go out,
they think they're students. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
They're not, they're
England cricketers. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:56
The perception is that
they drink too much. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
In terms of everything that's
happened to the team, | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
their performance levels,
the off-field antics, | 0:26:01 | 0:26:02
I would be staggered if England got
a victory this week. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:08
This will be the last
Ashes Test at this | 0:26:08 | 0:26:12
atmospheric ground -
for so long, Australia's | 0:26:12 | 0:26:13
western stronghold. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:14
But, for one final time,
they could watch the sunset | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
on England's hopes. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:21
Andy Swiss, BBC News, Perth. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:26
Slightly different weather over
here! | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30 | |
Here's Louise Lear | 0:26:30 | 0:26:31
Here's Louise Lear | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
We started with scenes like this,
sunshine and lying snow. The snow is | 0:26:35 | 0:26:39
thawing. This has been the scene
today. I know which I prefer. It has | 0:26:39 | 0:26:43
been wet at times, a real mess out
there. That is how it will stay for | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
the evening rush hour. As showers
push in and the temperatures fall | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
away, we can see a mix of rain,
sleet, snow and even hail and | 0:26:49 | 0:26:54
thunder. Tricky driving conditions.
Showers continue to drive eastwards, | 0:26:54 | 0:26:58
accompanied by gale force gusts of
wind, particularly down towards the | 0:26:58 | 0:27:03
south, and temperatures towards
freezing. Icy stretches in the | 0:27:03 | 0:27:10
morning. In the south-west, gales
slowly easing but a rational | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
showers. Yes, we could see icy
stretches across East Anglia and | 0:27:13 | 0:27:17
into the north of England and North
Wales, particularly on rural | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
untreated roads. Still some showers
and a wintry flavour to higher | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
ground across Northern Ireland and
Scotland. Ice again could be an | 0:27:24 | 0:27:27
issue. As we go through the day,
fingers crossed the wind should | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
start to ease a little. That will
prevent the showers from pushing too | 0:27:30 | 0:27:35
far inland tomorrow. Central and
eastern areas will see the best of | 0:27:35 | 0:27:39
the dry and sunny weather. Showers
confining themselves to the coast. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:44
Not particularly warm, but a degree
or so upon what we have seen, two or | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
7 degrees. Wind coming round to a
northerly on Friday. That could | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
drive in a fume showers in East.
Friday is a quiet day, a good day of | 0:27:51 | 0:27:56
sunny weather in the story and a
similar feel to tomorrow. The cold | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
air is set to with us, but there is
a change in the theme, milder air | 0:27:59 | 0:28:06
and when swinging back to the
south-west, that will drive in some | 0:28:06 | 0:28:10
rain. Saturday will be the better of
the two through the weekend. More | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
cloud and some rain gushing from the
West. But it will be a little bit | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
milder with a return to double
digits. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:19
A reminder of our main story... | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
Theresa May faces a showdown
with her own MPs over what role | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27 |
