A couple who met on an internet
dating website have been convicted | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
of planning a devastating Christmas
terror attack inspired | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
by the Islamic State group. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
Munir Mohammed, an asylum seeker
from Sudan who was living in Derby, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
had stored up bomb-making components
with the help of a his girlfriend | 0:01:52 | 0:01:58

The court heard the pair
were also researching how | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
to make the deadly poison,
ricin in the foiled | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
attack a year ago. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
Here's our Home Affairs
Correspondent, June Kelly reports. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:14
This is a story which stretches
to the streets of Sudan. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
The couple now convicted
both had roots here, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
but they linked up thousands
of miles away in the UK. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:27
Munir Mohammed entered Britain
illegally and then sought asylum. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
A couple of years later,
although married, he went | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
on a Muslim dating site,
singlemuslim.com, and found | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
his partner in crime. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
He was attracted
to Rowaida El-Hassan | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
because she was a pharmacist. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
He needed her scientific know-how
to mount a terror attack. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:42
They were both wedded
to an extremist ideology. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
They began sharing
IS execution videos. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
Together, the couple plotted
a terror outrage in the UK | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
in the run-up to Christmas 2016. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
Munir Mohammed would carry it out. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
He was living in a bedsit in Derby. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
Described as a bedroom jihadi,
here, over the internet, | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
he took instructions from a man
believed to be an IS commander, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
and told him "I'm ready". | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
Munir Mohammed had been
picked up on CCTV in Asda. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
He was shopping for everyday items
containing chemicals | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
he needed for his bomb,
all the time being guided over | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
the phone by his girlfriend
using her pharmacy experience. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:25
In his bedsit, officers found
bomb-making components | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
and instructions on how to use
mobile phone detonators | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
and the poison ricin. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
His IS commander had posted
an instruction on Facebook | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
which read "Place poison in food
like fruit and vegetables in markets | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
or inject poison in drinks and foods
that are prohibited in Islam". | 0:03:43 | 0:03:48
At that time, Munir Mohammed
was working here at Kerry Foods | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
in Burton-on-Trent. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
He was in the kitchens,
making sauces for ready meals that | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
are sold in Tesco and Morrison's. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
Using fake ID with someone else's
name, he got the job through the GI | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
Recruitment Company. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:09
Munir Mohammed was
planning a bomb attack. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
There was no evidence
he ever had any poison. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
But detectives say that
because of his interest in ricin | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
and his support for IS,
he did pose a threat | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
to this factory. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
He certainly was a risk. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:29
Had that food company known or had
we known of his interest in ricin | 0:04:29 | 0:04:35
and his link to that food company,
we would have taken steps to protect | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
the public and to prevent him
from continuing | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
that employment there. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:41
Kerry Foods, a global brand,
told us: | 0:04:41 | 0:04:47
The GI Recruitment Company | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
which gave Mohammed
the job here said... | 0:04:48 | 0:04:53
They had no idea the man they
recruited was also a recruit to IS. | 0:04:56 | 0:05:01
This couple was stopped by
the police and security service MI5. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
They will be sentenced next month. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08

The Prime Minister has been carrying
out a reshuffle of her Cabinet, | 0:05:10 | 0:05:18
with a few new faces, but so far,
the changes appear limited. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
The Immigration Minister,
Brandon Lewis has been named | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
as the new Conservative
party chairman, while | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
Jeremy Hunt continues
as Health Secretary. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson
is also staying put. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Our Political Editor Laura
Kuenssberg has the latest. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
Her report contains flashing images.
Who is going where? This was more a | 0:05:35 | 0:05:41
reshuffle where ministers into doubt
or moved along a little. No huge | 0:05:41 | 0:05:47
group of brand-new passengers for
the glossy Downing Street cars. The | 0:05:47 | 0:05:53
most powerful stayed more or less in
place. Are you expecting to stay in | 0:05:53 | 0:05:58
post, Mr Johnson? The Foreign
Secretary, the Chancellor, Brexit | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
secretary and the Home Secretary all
still the same. Thank you very much. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:08
David Lidington, who had been in
charge of the legal system, was | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
promoted to become an enforcer
across government. Sajid Javid, the | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
Communities Secretary, had housing
added to his title, but stays in | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
place. Some of Downing Street's
decisions were not anyone's choice. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:25
The Northern Ireland Secretary James
Brokenshire has stood aside for | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
health reasons. My intent is to get
on with surgery, get on with | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
recovery and get back to my duties
as an MP and also backed a | 0:06:32 | 0:06:38
front-line political duties. By
standing alongside them, this is | 0:06:38 | 0:06:44
what the Prime Minister really
wanted you to see today. Will this | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
broaden the party's appeal? New
faces to reboot the Tory machine | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
after its bungled election campaign.
Honoured and looking forward to it. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:58
A new chair and a bigger team
appointed by Number Ten to take | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
charge at Tory HQ. I have been asked
to lead a great party. Great team. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:08
Looking forward to it. We have a
fantastic team. Do you think you can | 0:07:08 | 0:07:14
really deliver the kind of thing the
Prime Minister hopes for? | 0:07:14 | 0:07:18
Absolutely. This is a positive move.
There are always challenges, but we | 0:07:18 | 0:07:24
are up for it. You might not
recognise Tory HQ. You may never | 0:07:24 | 0:07:29
have seen some of the new faces, but
this reshuffle is about rebooting | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
this party as well as about what
happens in government. But watch | 0:07:33 | 0:07:38
this. Those who seemed likely to
move, like the Health Secretary | 0:07:38 | 0:07:45
Jeremy Hunt... Followed the Business
Secretary, Greg Clark, both arrived | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
into Number Ten... And stayed until
after dark and emerged with | 0:07:47 | 0:07:52
virtually the same jobs. Are you
pleased with your new job? But a | 0:07:52 | 0:07:59
colleague, David Gauke, did move to
justice. Karen Bradley, the new | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
Northern Ireland Secretary. And
Justine Greening, expected to switch | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
from schools any moment now. And
with more move is expected in the | 0:08:06 | 0:08:11
next couple of hours, there will be
new faces around this table | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
tomorrow. Reassuringly, though,
neither a move nor a vacancy exists | 0:08:14 | 0:08:19
for the Downing Street cat. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
And Laura joins us now. Has the
Prime Minister got what she wanted | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
in this reshuffle? It would not be a
reshuffle if there weren't bits of | 0:08:27 | 0:08:32
confusion around the edges or
expectation is that turned out to be | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
wrong. I understand that Jeremy Hunt
stayed in his position at the | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
department for help because he made
it strong and passionate argument to | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
the Prime Minister that he was the
man to do so and to take on | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
responsibility for the future of
social care in England. So things | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
were perhaps a bit fluid around Mr
Hunt and he talked himself into | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
staying in his own job, having
persuaded the Prime Minister. So | 0:08:51 | 0:08:58
far, this reshuffle is still going
on. So far, this is a set of moves, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:05
a slight change, people moving in
and out. But the four most senior | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
jobs in government, the Foreign
Secretary, the Home Secretary, the | 0:09:09 | 0:09:14
Chancellor and the Brexit secretary
David Davis, they have all stayed in | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
their post. So in terms of a grand
big new year clear out, it is not | 0:09:16 | 0:09:21
that. From Number Ten's point of
view, they say by the end of | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
tonight, we will have a new look
cabinet and by the end of tomorrow, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
there will be many more new
appointments, more women and more | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
ethnic minority MPs coming into
government. They are clear that this | 0:09:31 | 0:09:42
is a significant reshuffle. It's not
just a few tweaks around the edges. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
For any Prime Minister, getting
through one of these without a | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
mistake or a huge big mess up is
something of an achievement. But | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
Downing Street are adamant that this
is a new look. But as I say, without | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
huge changes at the top table, it's
not necessarily the kind of big | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
reshuffle that will go down in
history. Laura Kuenssberg, thank | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
you. | 0:09:59 | 0:09:59 | |
The BBC's China editor,
Carrie Gracie, has stepped down | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
from the role because of what she's
called an "indefensible pay gap | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
between men and women" at the BBC. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
In an open letter addressed to
licence fee payers, Carrie Gracie - | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
who is remaining at the BBC -
accused the corporation | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
of "breaking equality law". | 0:10:11 | 0:10:16
But the BBC says an independent
audit of rank and file | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
staff found "no systemic
discrimination against women". | 0:10:19 | 0:10:20
Here's our Media Editor Amol Rajan. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:26
Chinese once called Chairman Mao
the great helmsman... | 0:10:26 | 0:10:31
Carrie Gracie is one of the most
respected international | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
editors of her generation. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:34
For more than 30 years,
she has broadcast about other | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
people, but this time,
she is the centre of the story. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
Ms Gracie resigned from her
position as China editor | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
because she is paid less than men
who are also international editors. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
This morning, she presented
the Today programme on Radio 4. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
It's been very moving, actually... | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
The news of her resignation leaked
out online last night. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
Six months after the BBC was forced
to reveal the salaries of some | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
highly paid on air staff,
Ms Gracie has been infuriated | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
by the response to her grievance. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
She was offered a pay rise
of £45,000 but declined it, | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
saying equality is what she wants. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
She would not be drawn
on whether she wanted male | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
colleagues to take a pay cut. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
When I started the China job,
I said I will only do this job | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
if I'm paid equally. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:25
And in July 2017, I discovered
the enormous gap, that the two men | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
who were international editors
were earning 50% more, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:35
at least, than the two women
who were international editors. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
The BBC has completed two
of the three pay audits it | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
announced last year,
and found no evidence | 0:11:40 | 0:11:41
of discrimination. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
The final one will report
in a matter of weeks. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
The corporation declined to put
anyone up for an interview, | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
but in a statement, they said... | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
The BBC talks about a gender pay
gap, but what I'm talking | 0:11:59 | 0:12:04
about is not a gender pay gap,
where sometimes men and women | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
are in different roles,
which explains the differences | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
in pay, what I'm talking
about is sex discrimination, | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
which is when men are paid more
for doing the same job | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
or a job of equal value. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
That is illegal. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
There is tremendous anger among many
female staff at all levels | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
of this corporation. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:24
Senior figures at the BBC say
they take this issue very seriously, | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
but many employees have found
the process of fighting for equal | 0:12:28 | 0:12:33
pay completely unbearable. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:40
The salience of this
story, however, arises | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
from its implications beyond this
place, because it's happening | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
in a climate in which many women
across several | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
industries say they have suffered
injustice and inequality | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
for far too long. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:49
Equality legislation doesn't work. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:50
We need to make it work. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
We make it work by forcing
companies to be honest, | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
which is still not happening, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
and by forcing companies
to examine their hiring, promotion | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
and parental leave policies. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:01
Equal pay for equal work
is a legal requirement. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
But who decides what equal work is? | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
Ultimately, it's
usually the employer. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:12
This is what makes tackling gender
pay issues so difficult, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:20
because obviously, we want
people to be treated | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
equally and given equal
opportunities in the workplace, | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
but employers also need | 0:13:25 | 0:13:26
to have the capacity to offer
people flexible payments, | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
bonuses and that kind of thing
to reward and incentivise people | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
to do well in their job. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:32
The BBC's public ownership
and obligations means it has | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
to set unique standards
and face unique scrutiny. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
With 200 formal complaints in train
and the possibility of legal action, | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
this story will run and run. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46

at its Ellesmere Port car plant in | 0:14:04 | 0:14:09
Cheshire. The firm is now owned by
France's PSA group. The company | 0:14:09 | 0:14:13
announced the loss of 400 jobs in
October. It is costs at Ellesmere | 0:14:13 | 0:14:18
Port and are higher than other
plants in the group. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
The former football coach
Barry Bennell has pleaded | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
guilty to seven offences
of child sexual assault. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
The 63-year-old, who is now
known as Richard Jones, | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
admitted the charges before
the start of his trial | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
at Liverpool Crown Court. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
The ex-Crewe coach is charged
with a total of 55 offences | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
between 1979 and 1991. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
His alleged victims were all
between the ages of 8 and 15. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
Our Sports Editor Dan Roan reports. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
A successful former coach
of the 1980s, Barry Bennell worked | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
with some of the most promising
young footballers | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
in the north-west of England. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:53
Youth team coach at Crewe Alexandra,
he also had links with | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
Manchester City and Stoke City. | 0:14:56 | 0:15:00
This is Bennell speaking
to the BBC when at Crewe. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
We do a lot of talking to them
as well as showing them the skills | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
and explaining the game to them. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
But there's more to it than just
coming here one hour a week. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
We need to give them homework. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
But today at the start of his trial
here at Liverpool Crown Court, | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
Bennell admitted
preying on young boys. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
Appearing via video link and wearing
a grey jumper, Bennell, | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
now known as Richard Jones, | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
admitted six counts of indecent
assault on two boys | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
aged between 11 and 14 at the time. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
Judge Clement Goldstone QC
also lifted reporting restrictions | 0:15:31 | 0:15:35
on a further charge
that the 63-year-old | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
had previously pleaded guilty to,
involving a third victim. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
Bennell is pleading not guilty to 48
further charges, including 11 counts | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
of serious sexual assault. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
All the charges relate to 11
complainants between 1979 and 1991. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:54
The trial is expected
to last eight weeks. | 0:15:54 | 0:16:00
This all comes as the FA
continues its year-long | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
investigation into historical
sexual abuse in English football, | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
with 285 suspects now identified. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07

Our top story this evening. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
A couple have been convicted
of plotting a devastating | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
terror attack in the UK inspired
by so-called IS. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
And still to come -
we find out why women are twice | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
as likely as men to die
after suffering the most serious | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
kind of heart attack. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
Coming up in Sportsday in the next
15 minutes on BBC News: | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
Murray says his hip surgery is a
success but he faces another | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
five months out of the game. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:43
Stars of stage and screen gathered
in Los Angeles last night | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
for the 75th Golden Globes awards. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
And almost all of them dressed
in black to show solidarity | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
with victims of the sexual
harassment scandal that has gripped | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
Hollywood in the last few months. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
Oprah Winfrey received a standing
ovation when she used her acceptance | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
speech to pay tribute to all women
who had suffered abuse and assault. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
From LA here's our North America
correspondent, James Cook. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:18
The bright lights of Hollywood are
shining into dark corners, exposing | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
shameful secrets. At the Golden
Globes, they turned the red carpet | 0:17:24 | 0:17:29
black to demonstrate it
determination to force change. There | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
is no way I am ever going to be in a
room and be treated like people have | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
been treated ever again, and not
stand up and say identical really | 0:17:37 | 0:17:41
that. The whole reason that was able
to take place, like any abuse of | 0:17:41 | 0:17:47
power, is silence. Meryl Streep was
a one of a number of actresses who | 0:17:47 | 0:17:53
arrived with an activist. We are
drawing a big black line between | 0:17:53 | 0:17:58
yesterday and tomorrow, the way
things used to be done, the way | 0:17:58 | 0:18:01
business used to be done. It is
important in our business and it is | 0:18:01 | 0:18:06
important in any business that
people in power don't get to bully | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
people and especially not bully them
in a sexual way and get away with | 0:18:09 | 0:18:13
it. Do think the industry is
changing? Yes, it will have to. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:19
There is no way it cannot. From the
May make the ceremony began, the | 0:18:19 | 0:18:26
tone was set. Good evening ladies
and remaining gentlemen. And here | 0:18:26 | 0:18:33
are the all-male nominees. Natalie
Portman highlighted the failure of | 0:18:33 | 0:18:39
the Golden Globes to recognise
female directors. And star after | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
Starr gave voice to a movement now
known as time's up. Oprah Winfrey | 0:18:42 | 0:18:47
led the charge. For too long women
have not been heard and believed if | 0:18:47 | 0:18:53
they dared to speak the truth to the
power of those men. But their time | 0:18:53 | 0:19:00
is up. The speech was so powerful,
that it fuelled immediate | 0:19:00 | 0:19:06
speculation of a run for president.
The time is up. This all began with | 0:19:06 | 0:19:11
the downfall of the mogul who abused
his power. The spotlight is now on | 0:19:11 | 0:19:16
Harvey Weinstein's accusers,
standing side by side. We have an | 0:19:16 | 0:19:24
opportunity nationally and
internationally so everyone | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
everywhere can work safely, earned
the same money for the same work, | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
and we can finally put sexual
harassment in the way past where it | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
should have been a long time ago. Is
it happening? It is happening. Four | 0:19:34 | 0:19:41
months ago you could not have
dreamed of the night like this. Time | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
and again on the red carpet we have
heard the same word and that word is | 0:19:45 | 0:19:50
change. The stars walking down here
are insisting that this is not just | 0:19:50 | 0:19:55
a moment, this is a process which
they say will continue. | 0:19:55 | 0:20:03
Rescue workers trying
to reach a burning tanker | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05

to Chinese authorities. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
The vessel has been on fire for two
days after colliding with | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12

South Korean planes and an American
aircraft have joined the search | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18

Andy Murray said it would be a last
resort, but he's announced | 0:20:23 | 0:20:26
that he has undergone hip surgery

after being forced to pull out
of the Australia Open. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
The three times grand slam champion
hasn't played competitively | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34

He says he now hopes to be back
playing again in time for this | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
summer's grass court season. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
Women who have the most serious form
of heart attack are twice as likely | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
as men to die in the year
after the attack - | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
according to a major new research. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
The decade-long study in Sweden
found that they were less likely | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
than men to receive recommended
treatments, such as clearing | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
blocked arteries and using statins. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
Here's our medical
correspondent, Fergus Walsh. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
AMBULANCE SIRENS WAIL. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
Every minute counts
after a heart attack. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
But too many women are being
misdiagnosed and wrongly treated. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:13
When Jules Conjoice had a heart
attack aged just 45, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
she displayed classic symptoms,
but these were initially | 0:21:17 | 0:21:21
dismissed by paramedics. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:25
Overwhelming pain in my chest,
the pain went up from my jaw, | 0:21:25 | 0:21:30
and sort of spread, then
it was going down my left arm. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
And then I had this overwhelming
feeling of going to be sick, | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
and this clamminess. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
The paramedics said, oh,
have you got pins and needles? | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
I said, yeah. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:43
She said, I think
it's a panic attack. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
And I remember thinking,
this isn't a panic attack. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
This is something more. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
A new study looked at more
than 60,000 women in Sweden who | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
had the most serious type of heart
attack, when there is | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
a total blockage of one
of the major arteries. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
It found that compared to men
they were roughly twice as likely | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
to die from their heart
attack within a year. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:07
They were less likely to have
treatment, to clear blocked | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
arteries, to be prescribed statins
or given aspirin. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
One statistic that may surprise
you is that women in the UK | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
are more than twice as likely to die
from coronary heart disease | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
than from breast cancer. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:26
Often it seems women present
with unusual symptoms, | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
and researchers say that helps
explain why, in the UK, like Sweden, | 0:22:30 | 0:22:34
they are not always getting
the right treatment. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
Women may well present
with other symptoms, | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
such as breathlessness,
fatigue, palpitations or pain, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
that is more atypical in nature such
as stabbing or sharp. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
And these findings can be
misinterpreted, both by the patient | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
and health care professionals. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:56
But if more women are to get rapid
access to treatment like this, | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
to clear blocked arteries,
there needs to be greater awareness | 0:22:59 | 0:23:04
that they, like men,
are at risk of heart attacks. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:08
Fergus Walsh, BBC News. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
Cricket, and it's been
a disappointing end | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
to a disappointing Ashes
aeries for England. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
They lost the final Test to give
Australia a 4-0 victory overall. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
Bowler James Anderson acknowledged
that the visitors had lost | 0:23:20 | 0:23:23
to a far better side, and said
England were now | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
looking to the future. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:27
Joe Wilson reports. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:33
Scorched in Sydney. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
At least the morning torture of
hearing the Ashes score is now over. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:42
England 180 all-out
in their final innings. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
Nothing left except
the hows and whys? | 0:23:44 | 0:23:49
We know we've got to
improve in a lot of areas. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
I know the management will be
thinking exactly the same, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
there's improvements
everyone can make. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:56
You're always looking to improve,
but particularly after a loss. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
So what next? | 0:23:59 | 0:24:01
Well, the big issue
for English Cricket is to prepare | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
players for Australia
in a very different hemisphere. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
Never mind 40 degrees, it's
about four here in Loughborough. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:10
The future might just be behind me. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
This is England's Pace Programme. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
Promising youngsters
in winter training. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:20
Australia had a group of 90 mile
an hour men in the Ashes, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
but England don't have fast bowlers. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
Do they? | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
We are hurting, and we will
review ourselves here. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:31
I know I'm already doing that with a
fast bowling programme anyway. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
But I'm absolutely convinced that
what we're doing is right, | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
and people may say,
where are the fast bowlers then? | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
We've got them. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:41
Will they get in the team? | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
James Anderson and Stuart Broad have
led England's bowling for a decade. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
They can't go on indefinitely. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:48
Jamie Porter was County Cricket's
leading wicket taker last summer. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:53
He's skilful more than
quick, and that's not | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
enough, some will say. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
Some of the stuff that's
said frustrates me | 0:24:58 | 0:24:59
because I don't agree with it. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
It just motivates me more to go
and show them that, you know, | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
I'm ready for my chance
and when I get it I want to prove | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
to people that there is some talent
around, | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
there is room for a bowler like me
in international cricket. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:18
English summers can chill
English cricketers. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
A season's grind rewards stamina not
speed, and fast bowlers can be lost. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:25
But if these images don't
add a few miles an hour | 0:25:25 | 0:25:28
of motivation, nothing will. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
Joe Wilson, BBC News, Loughborough. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
have released two new photographs | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
of Princess Charlotte at Kensington
Palace. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
The photos were taken
by the Duchess this morning - | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
shortly before Princess Charlotte
left for her first day of nursery | 0:25:44 | 0:25:48
at the Willcocks Nursery School
in South West London. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:52
Time for a look at the weather. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:53
Here's Chris Fawkes. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:55
Hello. We have some more beautiful
pictures, this time of the weather. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:09
It was a freezing cold start to the
day in Scotland and this helped | 0:26:09 | 0:26:12
these things do form. They are
called ice pancakes. They are caused | 0:26:12 | 0:26:17
by AD is causing foam which freezes.
On the satellite picture you get | 0:26:17 | 0:26:23
this sense of the lump of cloud
creeping its way northwards. The | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
wind is starting to blow in from the
south-easterly direction. That will | 0:26:27 | 0:26:32
push the cloud northwards. For many
areas, it will tend to turn cloudy | 0:26:32 | 0:26:37
overnight. Across the Highlands of
Scotland, here we will keep some | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
clear skies and temperatures could
get down to minus eight Celsius. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
There will be some hill fog patches
dotted around the UK. For most of us | 0:26:45 | 0:26:50
it is a cloudy, grey start to the
day. The best sunshine across | 0:26:50 | 0:26:56
Scotland, parts of West Wales and
England. Later in the afternoon we | 0:26:56 | 0:27:01
will see a band of rain encroaching
from the West and bringing some damp | 0:27:01 | 0:27:05
weather into the far south-west of
Wales and England. That wet weather | 0:27:05 | 0:27:09
will continue to push its way
northwards and eastwards tomorrow | 0:27:09 | 0:27:13
night. Along with that again there
will be some low cloud around and | 0:27:13 | 0:27:17
missed and hill fog patches. Cold
enough for some snow in the | 0:27:17 | 0:27:21
mountains of Scotland but generally
temperatures in the towns and cities | 0:27:21 | 0:27:25
holding a few degrees above
freezing. That takes us into | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
Wednesday which is a decent weather
kind of day. The skies will brighten | 0:27:29 | 0:27:35
up with some sunshine coming
through. In the sunshine it is | 0:27:35 | 0:27:37
turning milder across the south-west
with temperatures reaching double | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
figures but cooler further north. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:45
A reminder of our main story: | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
A couple who met on a dating website
have been found guilty of plotting | 0:27:50 | 0:27:55
what the judge called a potentially
devastating terror attack in the UK, | 0:27:55 | 0:28:00
inspired by so-called Islamic State.
That is all from the | 0:28:00 | 0:28:04 |
