Showing the strain -

the frontline NHS staff struggling

0:00:070:00:09

to cope, as the winter keeps piling

on the pressure.

0:00:090:00:13

We've spent four days filming

in A&E at a hospital

0:00:130:00:16

in the north east of England -

one that has some of

0:00:160:00:19

the best waiting times.

0:00:190:00:24

But even there, patients

like 83-year-old Blanche are left

0:00:240:00:26

in pain on trolleys in the corridor

because there aren't enough beds.

0:00:260:00:29

They're marvellous these two men,

they've never left me.

0:00:290:00:34

I'm in agony.

0:00:340:00:43

The staff at North Tees Hospital say

they are doing the best they can,

0:00:430:00:46

but they just can't cope

with the numbers coming for help.

0:00:460:00:49

Worked for the trust for 19 years.

0:00:490:00:50

Never known it be

as bad as it is now.

0:00:500:00:53

There's not the capacity,

we don't have the capacity to safely

0:00:530:00:55

look after the amount of patients

coming through the door.

0:00:550:00:58

We'll be asking how much

more the NHS can take?

0:00:580:01:00

Also tonight.

On trial for murder

and attempted murder -

0:01:030:01:06

a court hears Darren Osborne drove

into a crowd near a North London

0:01:060:01:09

mosque because he wanted

to kill Muslims.

to death in her home.

0:01:120:01:14

A man - understood to be her father

- has been arrested on suspicion

0:01:140:01:18

of attempted murder.

Northern Ireland boss

Michael O'Neill turns down

0:01:370:01:39

the chance to become the new manager

of Scotland - saying it's not

0:01:390:01:42

the right opportunity

at this moment.

0:01:420:01:50

Good evening and welcome

to the BBC News at Six.

0:02:040:02:05

There's fresh evidence tonight

of the intense strain hospitals

0:02:050:02:08

across the UK are under,

as the NHS struggles to deal

0:02:080:02:11

with winter pressures.

0:02:110:02:14

We've spent four days

the University Hospital

0:02:140:02:16

of North Tees in the North East of

England.

0:02:160:02:19

The A&E department there

has some of the best

0:02:190:02:23

waiting times in England,

even though the Trust is rated

0:02:230:02:26

as "requiring improvement".

0:02:260:02:27

Our team witnessed patients waiting

for hours to be treated,

0:02:270:02:31

trolleys in corridors

and ambulances backed up.

0:02:310:02:33

Medical staff at the hospital say it

doesn't have the capacity to look

0:02:330:02:37

after safely all the patients coming

through the door.

0:02:370:02:40

The Trust says pressures

are "immense".

0:02:400:02:43

From Stockton, our special

correspondent Ed Thomas

0:02:430:02:44

has this report.

0:02:440:02:52

Inside the NHS. For the first time

this winter, we have within given

0:02:540:03:01

full access to a hospital.

I have

worked for the trust for 19 year, I

0:03:010:03:06

have never known it to be as bad as

it is now.

Over a weekend, we spoke

0:03:060:03:10

to patients.

Supposed to be the best

country in the world. We are nowhere

0:03:100:03:15

near the best country in the world.

Progressively getting worse.

0:03:150:03:18

Definitely.

Met staff, facing

unprecedented pressure

We have no

0:03:180:03:25

rooms in the A&E department so these

patients are waiting here for the

0:03:250:03:29

next available bed.

How do you describe the NHS?

It

0:03:290:03:35

feels like it is lost. It is

completely under strain, bursting at

0:03:350:03:39

the seams.

What it is like being on the

0:03:390:03:44

corridor?

I think it's a disgrace.

The University Hospital of North

0:03:440:03:53

Tees.

It has some of the best A&E waiting

0:03:530:03:57

times in England.

But with was so full at one point

0:03:570:04:01

many month had to close its doors.

It's Friday and we are in the rapid

0:04:010:04:10

assessment unit.

I'll do this one.

It used to be the hospital's gym.

It

0:04:100:04:14

is hot, it is because the windows

are at the top. It is like stepping

0:04:140:04:19

off a plane abroad. That is what

it's like, the heat hits you. Are

0:04:190:04:24

you comfortable there

Patients with

less severe symptoms can be sent

0:04:240:04:30

here instead of A&E.

Dawn has worked

here for nearly 20 years, this has

0:04:300:04:36

been her busiest winter yet.

It is

exhausting mentally and physically,

0:04:360:04:39

trying to keep up with everything we

need to do in the short space of

0:04:390:04:43

time we have to do it in. It can be

hard and tiring, but I do love my

0:04:430:04:47

job.

We'll get you there.

Some patients

0:04:470:04:51

spent up to six hours here.

Average waiting times are not

0:04:510:04:58

included in the hospital's A&E

figures. How many trolleys have you

0:04:580:05:01

got in here?

12.

How many patients?

18.

How many more to come in?

Nine.

0:05:010:05:10

Another nine to come in. About to

two hours before you get your

0:05:100:05:14

results.

They don't have the time to

look after patients and do their own

0:05:140:05:18

jobs and everything everything. It

is terrible.

The nurses get upset,

0:05:180:05:22

don't they. They really do get

upset.

I think the nurses deserve

0:05:220:05:26

better.

The nurses couldn't do any more.

We

0:05:260:05:32

need a proper area for rapid

assessment.

If the patients weren't

0:05:320:05:36

here, where would they be?

In A&E.

On Saturday, A&E is filling up.

0:05:360:05:44

The rapid assessment unit in the gym

is closed.

0:05:440:05:48

Lady out of 12 is going into nine.

And Leanne, the nurse in charge must

0:05:480:05:54

find space.

More coming through the

door, more elderly patients, more

0:05:540:05:59

poorly patients.

What are your concerns?

There is not

0:05:590:06:05

the capacity, we don't have the

capacity to safely look after the

0:06:050:06:08

patients coming through the door.

By 4.00, ambulances are backing up

0:06:080:06:17

outside A&E.

0:06:170:06:23

outside A&E. Inside... Paramedics

wait with their patients.

0:06:230:06:29

She's looking after me lovely. I'm

doing well. I'm in pain but coping.

0:06:290:06:38

Blanche is 83. And she is struggling

to breathe.

0:06:380:06:51

They're marvellous these two men.

They've never left me.

I know.

I'm

0:06:510:06:56

in agony.

She is in discomfort and pain. Being

0:06:560:07:05

here is not where she needs to be.

We have given her what we can in

0:07:050:07:09

terms of pain leaf.

What does she

need?

She needs to be seen by a

0:07:090:07:14

doctor.

That's it.

Paramedics told us they

0:07:140:07:24

wanted with her for an hour. When

you see that lady down there for an

0:07:240:07:32

hour...

It's awful. We don't like

it. Nobody likes the patients to be

0:07:320:07:37

in the corridor, but I physically

have no room to put this lady in, I

0:07:370:07:42

have been down and apologised, but,

there is no physical bed to transfer

0:07:420:07:49

this lady into.

Across the NHS, emergency admissions

0:07:490:07:56

are at record levels.

You are doing fantastic.

0:07:560:08:03

What do these...

They are amazing.

Tenfold, they are amazing.

Many

0:08:030:08:09

hospitals are also facing a major

flu outbreak.

0:08:090:08:13

What has this place meant to you?

She wouldn't be here. She said

0:08:130:08:19

herself she thinks she would be dead

if itted hadn't been for the

0:08:190:08:22

doctors.

Here, it means by Sunday,

every bed on every medical ward is

0:08:220:08:27

full.

We are trying to move patients

from orthopaedics to create

0:08:270:08:33

capacity.

It is Denise job to find

beds.

Hello.

To keep patients moving

0:08:330:08:41

through the hospital.

We can always

want more beds and more staff, but

0:08:410:08:45

you can't go on forever just using

more beds and staff, we have to look

0:08:450:08:50

at the other reasons they come in

hospital.

Patients that are in

0:08:500:08:55

trolleys on corridors are rare

within the trust. My concern is that

0:08:550:09:01

the year on year increase in the

patients and number coming to A&E is

0:09:010:09:05

not sustainable. We need to

transform our care. From Friday to

0:09:050:09:11

Sunday, the hospital failed to meet

its A&E four hour waiting target

I

0:09:110:09:15

am going to check the floor.

The

avenue -- averaged 85%, well below

0:09:150:09:20

the 95% target.

We are losing a lot

of experienced staff, because they

0:09:200:09:26

are becoming burned out. They are

realising they can't keep going like

0:09:260:09:30

this. Just discharging but when you

discharge...

It has been nonstop. We

0:09:300:09:38

haven't been able to give them a

drink.

How does that make you feel?

0:09:380:09:43

Frustrated and sad I would say fwlsm

can you go on doing this? No. Not

0:09:430:09:50

just me personally.

You have had a

few more years than me and I don't

0:09:500:09:56

think I can.

How long do you think

you can stick it out for?

At this

0:09:560:10:01

moment in time I have probably got

about five years left, tops. So far

0:10:010:10:05

my career has been four years long.

I wouldn't say I would do a long

0:10:050:10:09

career in the NHS.

Step back before you sit down.

0:10:090:10:16

With our ageing population, more

patients with complex acute

0:10:160:10:22

conditions, more nurses, leaving the

joining in England last year, many

0:10:220:10:25

want to know how the NHS can

continue to cope.

0:10:250:10:31

Come this time next year this will

happen again and again and again and

0:10:310:10:35

again. And we will see all this

pictures in the news, and the

0:10:350:10:42

horrendous trolley waits, and it

doesn't seem to change.

0:10:420:10:45

horrendous trolley waits,

and it doesn't seem to change.

0:10:450:10:47

Our health editor Hugh Pym is here.

0:10:470:10:49

Distressing scenes there.

0:10:490:10:51

83-year-old Blanche on a trolley

in pain for example -

0:10:510:10:53

thankfully she's back home now.

0:10:530:10:54

But how representative is that of UK

hospitals as a whole?

0:10:540:11:01

Well, I think it is Sophie.

Particularly the fact under great

0:11:010:11:06

pressure the NHS can deliver safe

quality care, thanks to dedicated

0:11:060:11:10

staff and patients like Blanche can

get home. It illustrates that staff

0:11:100:11:14

are feeling under huge strain, they

have never seen anything like it,

0:11:140:11:18

previous winters haven't been as bad

as this. As we heard some are

0:11:180:11:22

considering leaving their careers

early, if this continues. That is a

0:11:220:11:25

real workforce charge, we learned

last week that more nurses are

0:11:250:11:29

leaving than joining the NHS in

England, the Government says it has

0:11:290:11:33

put more money into creating more

places for more nurse, it has put

0:11:330:11:38

more money into English A&E units to

help with the pressures this winter.

0:11:380:11:42

What we also learned is there is

confusion over the stats, so

0:11:420:11:46

important to try to work out how

well or not the NHS is doing. We

0:11:460:11:52

learned there that the rapid

assessment unit with patients

0:11:520:11:54

waiting up to six hours isn't

included in that hospital statistic,

0:11:540:11:58

we have also learned other hospitals

are including different minor injury

0:11:580:12:03

centres often run by other provide

ires which is very confusing.

0:12:030:12:08

The UK stats Watchdog said it wants

to look into this, because it thinks

0:12:080:12:12

it is all seriously misleading for

patients.

0:12:120:12:15

it is all seriously

misleading for patients.

0:12:150:12:17

A court has heard that a man

who drove a van into a crowd

0:12:170:12:20

of people near two mosques

in North London last year wanted

0:12:200:12:23

to kill as many Muslims as possible.

0:12:230:12:25

The jury was told that

48-year-old Darren Osborne,

0:12:250:12:27

who's accused of killing one man

and attempting to murder others

0:12:270:12:29

in an act of terrorism,

had decided to take matters

0:12:290:12:32

into his own hands after growing

angry following the Manchester

0:12:320:12:34

and London attacks.

0:12:340:12:35

He denies murder

and attempted murder.

0:12:350:12:37

Daniel Sandford reports.

0:12:370:12:45

The pandemonium on a summer night in

north London after a large box van

0:12:500:12:54

smashed into a crowd of worshippers

at speed, leaving them strewn across

0:12:540:12:59

the pavement, some with

life-changing injuries.

0:12:590:13:03

And leaving 51-year-old Makram Ali

dead. Today his family were at

0:13:030:13:08

Woolwich Crown Court to watch as

48-year-old Darren Osborne from

0:13:080:13:12

Cardiff went trial. Jonathan Rees QC

for the prosecution said Osbourne

0:13:120:13:17

deliberately drove into a group of

Muslims trying to kill as many as

0:13:170:13:19

possible.

The prosecution say Darren Osborne

0:13:190:13:24

became enraged after a BBC drama

about sexual abuse by Pakistani men

0:13:240:13:29

in Rochdale, and by the attacks on

London and Manchester. His partner

0:13:290:13:33

said he was a ticking time bomb who

followed will on twitter Tommy

0:13:330:13:38

Robinson the founder of the far

right group the EDL. The day before

0:13:380:13:41

the attack he hired a large van.

That Saturday evening Darren Osborne

0:13:410:13:46

came here to his local pub, and the

prosecution say that witnesses

0:13:460:13:51

remember him writing on a piece of

paper, and then becoming

0:13:510:13:56

increasingly loud and abusive about

Muslims.

0:13:560:13:59

Prosecution say that after the

attack a misspelled note was found

0:13:590:14:03

in the cab of the van Osbourne

hired. Part of it reads:

0:14:030:14:18

The prosecution say that this

pro-Palestinian march may have been

0:14:250:14:29

Darren Osborne's original target,

but when that didn't prove viable he

0:14:290:14:34

instead started looking for mosques.

Their case is it was an act of

0:14:340:14:39

terrorism designed to intimidate the

Muslim community.

0:14:390:14:45

Police have arrested a man who's

thought to be the father

0:14:450:14:48

of an 8-year-old girl

who died after being

0:14:480:14:50

stabbed on Saturday night.

0:14:500:14:51

54-year-old Bill Billingham

is in a critical condition

0:14:510:14:53

after he was found with a stab wound

in his stomach.

0:14:530:14:57

Sima Kotecha reports.

0:14:570:15:01

Eight-year-old Mylee Billingham,

described as a little angel.

0:15:010:15:05

She was stabbed to

death at the weekend.

0:15:050:15:07

Tributes lay outside

the bungalow in the area

0:15:070:15:08

of Brownhills, near Walsall.

0:15:080:15:10

It's where police were called to,

just after 9.00pm on Saturday.

0:15:100:15:14

Mylee was found inside

with serious injuries.

0:15:140:15:16

She was rushed to hospital,

but police say medics

0:15:160:15:21

were unable to save her.

0:15:210:15:23

She died a short time later.

0:15:230:15:26

Some of those living

nearby are distraught.

0:15:260:15:28

I only live round the corner

and I heard the sirens,

0:15:280:15:31

and I couldn't believe it.

0:15:310:15:32

It was such a shock to everyone.

0:15:320:15:37

A 54-year-old man was arrested

yesterday on suspicion

0:15:370:15:39

of attempted murder.

0:15:390:15:40

The BBC understand he is

Bill Billingham, Mylee's father.

0:15:400:15:43

He was taken to hospital

with a serious stab wound

0:15:430:15:46

to his stomach, and is said to be

in a critical condition.

0:15:460:15:49

At Mylee's school, the head

teacher had this to say.

0:15:490:15:53

Everyone at the school

is completely devastated.

0:15:530:15:57

Mylee was dearly loved by us all.

0:15:570:16:00

Her smile lit up the room -

in fact it never left her face.

0:16:000:16:03

She was a fun-loving,

happy, eight-year-old,

0:16:030:16:06

who had her whole life

in front of her.

0:16:060:16:09

She took a full part in school life,

particularly enjoying

0:16:090:16:12

singing and performing.

0:16:120:16:13

She was just a lovely girl.

0:16:130:16:15

Our hearts go out to her family

at this difficult time.

0:16:150:16:19

Police are treating what happened

as a domestic incident,

0:16:190:16:22

and say they are not looking

for anybody else.

0:16:220:16:26

In this community, it's been

traumatic as they've had to come

0:16:260:16:28

to terms with losing their little

angel, taken too soon

0:16:280:16:31

in a tragic way.

0:16:310:16:32

0:17:190:17:22

for cervical cancer,

because they're too embarrassed

0:17:220:17:23

to show their bodies to doctors

according to a charity.

0:17:230:17:28

It also says cervical cancer

screening rates have

0:17:280:17:30

fallen to a 20-year low.

0:17:300:17:31

Two thousand women took

part in the survey -

0:17:310:17:33

it found that more than a third

of women are failing to get tested

0:17:330:17:37

because of their body shape.

0:17:370:17:38

34 per cent were worried

about getting undressed in front

0:17:380:17:40

of a doctor or nurse.

And the majority of those questioned

0:17:400:17:43

weren't aware that cervical cancer

is the most common cancer

0:17:430:17:45

in women under 35.

0:17:450:17:46

Here's our correspondent,

Lorna Gordon.

0:17:460:17:54

The abnormal cells that indicate the

presence of cervical cancer. It is a

0:17:570:18:02

disease that can be caught early by

a smear test. But for most of her

0:18:020:18:08

20s, Lauren Bene avoided having it

done even though she was getting

0:18:080:18:12

constant reminders from her GP.

There were quite a few reasons that

0:18:120:18:16

prevented me from doing it. I was

nervous about what the medical

0:18:160:18:21

professionals might think it just by

looking at me, I thought about the

0:18:210:18:27

underwear I would wear, were I would

put it when I took it off.

0:18:270:18:35

Picked up severely abnormal

precancerous cells, she has had

0:19:010:19:02

treatment and been given the all

clear. The aim of the smear test is

0:19:020:19:06

to pick up any changes in a cervix,

the cells at the neck of the womb.

0:19:060:19:08

It takes a few minutes and in most

instances it is carried out by a

0:19:080:19:11

nurse in a space like this. And yet

some women do not turn up for the

0:19:110:19:15

cheque. Virtually all of my patients

feel the need to apologise to me, I

0:19:150:19:17

am sorry I did not shave, or had a

shower yesterday and my answer is, I

0:19:170:19:21

do not think about that, I am here

to do a job. And that is that.

This

0:19:210:19:24

survey suggests there is a

particular reluctance among younger

0:19:240:19:26

women, those under 35 to get the

test done.

If women are being put

0:19:260:19:31

off attending screening, there will

be a risk of more women being

0:19:310:19:34

diagnosed and potentially losing

their lives, it is imperative we

0:19:340:19:38

find ways that make it more

accessible for women to attend

0:19:380:19:42

screening when invited and also that

they understand what the testers

0:19:420:19:46

for.

Cervical cancer is largely

preventable and the message to women

0:19:460:19:52

is not to let embarrassment stop

them from getting a simple test

0:19:520:19:55

which could end up saving their

lives. Laura Gordon, BBC News,

0:19:550:20:00

Glasgow.

0:20:000:20:03

The Ukip leader Henry Bolton says

he won't quit despite several

0:20:030:20:05

members of the party's ruling body

resigning in protest

0:20:050:20:07

over his relationship

with his ex-girlfriend.

0:20:070:20:09

She has apologised after

being accused of sending

0:20:090:20:11

racist text messages.

0:20:110:20:12

Our political correspondent

Leila Nathoo is in Folkestone

0:20:120:20:14

where Mr Bolton was speaking

a short time ago.

0:20:140:20:16

And he was adamant

he wasn't quitting?

0:20:160:20:23

That is right. Henry Bolton was

bullish when he emerged earlier in

0:20:230:20:27

defiance of those in his party who

are calling for him to stand down

0:20:270:20:32

over this episode concerning his now

ex-girlfriend. The ruling body has

0:20:320:20:37

decided in a boat of no confidence

in him and now a dozen members of

0:20:370:20:41

his top team have resigned, but

today he insisted he was going

0:20:410:20:44

nowhere saying it was time to end

the infighting, time to drain the

0:20:440:20:51

swamp, using the Donald Trump

phrase. He wants to reform party

0:20:510:20:54

structures and he

0:20:540:21:02

structures and he is banking on the

support of another party members to

0:21:020:21:04

keep him in place when they meet in

a few weeks' time to decide his

0:21:040:21:07

fate. In the meantime, a statement

has instead risked deepening

0:21:070:21:10

divisions.

Thank you.

0:21:100:21:12

The head of the Army says

the government must invest more

0:21:120:21:14

in the Armed Forces or risk falling

behind 'potential enemies.'

0:21:140:21:17

In a speech in the last hour,

General Sir Nick Carter said Britain

0:21:170:21:20

would struggle to match Russian

capabilities on the battlefield.

0:21:200:21:22

His comments have been

approved by the Defence

0:21:220:21:24

Secretary Gavin Williamson -

and come amid speculation that

0:21:240:21:26

the military is to face more cuts.

0:21:260:21:28

Our Defence Correspondent,

Jonathan Beale reports.

0:21:280:21:29

Russia is building an increasingly

modern and aggressive military.

0:21:290:21:31

Already tested in battle in Syria,

using weapons Britain

0:21:310:21:34

would struggle to match,

like long-range missiles.

0:21:340:21:37

In Ukraine they have been

using unconventional

0:21:370:21:39

warfare, electronics,

cyber and misinformation.

0:21:390:21:42

And they are even on manoeuvre

on Europe's doorstep.

0:21:420:21:48

With large-scale exercises

near to the borders.

0:21:480:21:51

Enough to worry the head

of the British Army,

0:21:510:21:53

who tonight gave this

rare public warning.

0:21:530:21:57

I believe our ability to pre-empt

or respond to these threats will be

0:21:570:22:00

eroded if we do not match up

to them now.

0:22:000:22:02

They represent a clear

and present danger.

0:22:020:22:04

They are not thousands

of miles away, they are now

0:22:040:22:07

on Europe's doorstep.

0:22:070:22:15

The UK is already seriously

outnumbered, Russia has

0:22:150:22:17

more than 2500 tanks,

among them the most

0:22:170:22:19

advanced in the world.

0:22:190:22:26

In contrast, Britain has fewer

than 300 and the UK's Challenger

0:22:260:22:29

tank, here on an exercise,

is now over 20 years old.

0:22:290:22:34

This intervention by the head

of the Army is as much an appeal

0:22:340:22:37

for more money for defence

as it is a warning about

0:22:370:22:40

the threat posed by Russia.

0:22:400:22:43

Over the next ten years,

the Ministry of Defence needs

0:22:430:22:45

an extra £20 billion to modernise

the Armed Forces and without that

0:22:450:22:48

money, they could face another

round of brutal cuts.

0:22:480:22:55

So how does Britain's

defence spending compare?

0:22:550:22:58

Last year its budget

was £35 billion.

0:22:580:23:00

While Russia's was £44 billion.

0:23:000:23:03

But the UK is still part

of the Nato alliance

0:23:030:23:06

who together spent £657 billion,

including a US defence

0:23:060:23:10

budget of 443 billion.

0:23:100:23:15

This is not only about Russia,

it is also about our European allies

0:23:150:23:18

and the United States.

0:23:180:23:20

We need to show to our Nato allies

that we are taking Russia seriously

0:23:200:23:24

and that we intend to maintain

ourselves as a serious

0:23:240:23:26

military power.

0:23:260:23:29

The Defence Secretary has

sent his top brass into battle

0:23:290:23:31

to persuade the Chancellor

to give him more money,

0:23:310:23:33

but they are competing with other

demands and other departments

0:23:330:23:36

and defence may not be

the top of the list.

0:23:360:23:38

Jonathan Beale, BBC News.

0:23:380:23:46

Two men have been sentenced

to at least 34 years each

0:23:470:23:49

after being found guilty

of murdering a businessman

0:23:490:23:51

in an attempted burglary

at his home in Dorset.

0:23:510:23:54

Guy Hedger was shot dead last April

by Kevin Downton and Jason Baccus,

0:23:540:23:57

who committed burglaries

to fund their drug habits.

0:23:570:23:59

A third man, Scott

Keeping, was acquitted.

0:23:590:24:07

The manufacturer of an ejector seat

which caused the death

0:24:080:24:10

of a Red Arrows pilot has admitted

breaking health and safety laws.

0:24:100:24:13

Flight Leftenant Sean

Cunningham died in 2011

0:24:130:24:15

when he was ejected -

without warning -

0:24:150:24:17

from his jet while it was parked

on the ground at RAF Scampton.

0:24:170:24:22

The Queen's granddaughter,

Princess Eugenie, is engaged

0:24:220:24:24

to her longterm boyfriend,

Jack Brooksbank.

0:24:240:24:28

The second Royal wedding of the year

- will take place in the autumn

0:24:280:24:31

at St George's Chapel,

Windsor.

0:24:310:24:32

The 27-year-old, who got engaged

on holiday in Nicaragua this month,

0:24:320:24:35

told the BBC of the moment

her fiance proposed.

0:24:350:24:42

The lake was so beautiful,

the light was such a special

0:24:420:24:44

light I have never seen.

0:24:440:24:46

I actually said, this

is an incredible moment.

0:24:460:24:48

And then he popped the question.

0:24:480:24:50

Which was really surprising,

even though we have been

0:24:500:24:52

together for seven years.

0:24:520:24:54

So...

0:24:540:24:55

Right.

0:24:550:24:56

I was over the moon.

0:24:560:25:01

The happy couple.

0:25:010:25:03

He played more than 600

matches for Blackpool,

0:25:030:25:05

he captained England and was even

part of the victorious

0:25:050:25:07

1966 World Cup squad -

today tributes have been pouring

0:25:070:25:10

in for Jimmy Armfield who has

died at the age of 82.

0:25:100:25:13

After he retired from the game -

the former Blackpool captain spent

0:25:130:25:16

more than 30 years working

as a BBC pundit.

0:25:160:25:18

Our sports correspondent, David

Ornstein, looks back at his life.

0:25:180:25:26

Jimmy Armfield was as likeable on

the football pitch as he was in the

0:25:280:25:32

commentary box and beyond, starting

out in 1954 with Blackpool, he

0:25:320:25:37

played there until retirement, 627

games, many of them as captain, over

0:25:370:25:42

17 years. Armfield would later turn

to management succeeding Brian

0:25:420:25:48

Clough at Leeds United and guiding

them to the 1975 European Cup final,

0:25:480:25:53

but it was his loyalty to one club

which set him apart. Jimmy Armfield

0:25:530:25:59

became known as Mr Blackpool with

this statue erected Stevan years ago

0:25:590:26:04

in his honour, a permanent reminder

of a man who contributed so much for

0:26:040:26:07

his town and his country -- seven

years ago. Armfield represented

0:26:070:26:14

England 43 times... A perfect

interception. 15 as skipper and was

0:26:140:26:18

a member of the 1966 World Cup

winning squad, only for injury to

0:26:180:26:22

deny him any time on the pitch.

When

you tell someone you're not playing,

0:26:220:26:28

you have to be fit for the World Cup

start and I never played again. It

0:26:280:26:34

is better that we won but is today

people look back and say, that they

0:26:340:26:39

remember the World Cup squad. It is

not the same as being in the 11 who

0:26:390:26:43

played in the point was, it was

better that they won.

It wasn't

0:26:430:26:50

until 2009 at Armfield received his

medal and by then he had taken up

0:26:500:26:54

summarising for BBC Radio and did so

for the best part of 40 years,

0:26:540:26:57

referred to by many as the voice of

football.

I don't think he ever

0:26:570:27:02

properly got the credit as a player

or manager that he deserved. But do

0:27:020:27:07

you know what I loved about him? As

much as anything else, that he

0:27:070:27:13

maintained his loyalty to Blackpool.

In a statement, his family confirmed

0:27:130:27:17

that he passed away peacefully after

a decade-long battle against cancer.

0:27:170:27:22

The outpouring of tributes reflect

the regard in which he was held.

0:27:220:27:26

Jimmy Armfield made his mark like

few others, he was as popular as

0:27:260:27:30

they come and will be sorely missed

but so fondly remembered.

0:27:300:27:37

Jimmy Armfield, who's

died at the age of 82.

0:27:370:27:39

Time for a look at the weather..

0:27:390:27:41

Here's Alina Jenkins.

0:27:410:27:42

Here's Alina Jenkins.

0:27:420:27:45

It will be all change. The trend for

something milder is underway. We

0:27:450:27:50

have the lying snow, it will be

starting to thaw and we have lost

0:27:500:27:53

that feed of cold air, the winds

have switched around pushing much

0:27:530:27:58

milder air across the country and we

noticed that today, some spells of

0:27:580:28:03

sunshine in Central and eastern

parts of England. It looks almost

0:28:030:28:09

springlike outside Worthing. It is a

fairly quiet evening, mainly dry, a

0:28:090:28:14

few showers, icy stretches in the

north of England and later we look

0:28:140:28:18

to the west, are neck bowl of wet

and windy weather arriving in the

0:28:180:28:21

West through the night. Some strong

winds and heavy and persistent rain

0:28:210:28:26

but a much milder night, at

temperatures between 5-9. We have a

0:28:260:28:32

much more unsettled day tomorrow,

strong winds, outbreaks of rain,

0:28:320:28:36

pushing into these, one way or

another we

0:28:360:28:48

will see rain at some stage. The

first belt should clear to leave

0:28:510:28:54

some sunshine but more showers are

never too far away in the afternoon.

0:28:540:28:56

Look at the temperatures, between

9-13. Parts of Wales and England

0:28:560:28:58

seeing 14 or 15. There is another

Atlantic system heading our way

0:28:580:29:01

tomorrow evening, a squeeze in the

ice of Boris, strong winds, gales,

0:29:010:29:06

if not severe ones and heavy rain

pushing east and then we start to

0:29:060:29:11

see some brighter conditions and

colder conditions, though showers

0:29:110:29:16

perhaps wintry again in Scotland but

still quite mild. By Thursday and

0:29:160:29:22

Friday, it stays quite windy, and

mixture of sunshine and showers and

0:29:220:29:26

while not as cold as recently, it

will turn colder again.

0:29:260:29:30

That's all from the BBC News at Six,

so it's goodbye from me -
