Good evening. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
A teenager has been charged with 17
counts of premeditated murder | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
after a mass shooting at a high
school in Florida. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
Police say the gunman -
19-year-old Nikolas Cruz - | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
was a former pupil at the school
who'd been expelled. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
The FBI confirmed this afternoon
that it was warned about Cruz | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
after he left a comment on a YouTube
video last year, stating he would be | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
a "professional school shooter." | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
President Trump said that
making schools safer | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
will be his administration's top
priority - and that he was | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
committed to tackling
the issue of mental health. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
You may find some of the images
in Nada Tawfik's report distressing. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:50
Running for their lives, these
panicked students fled as fast as | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
they could. They realised quickly
that they were in very real danger. | 0:02:54 | 0:03:00
This was not a drill that American
schools have rehearsed time and | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
again for these exact scenarios. I
have the gunshot victim. Stoneman | 0:03:04 | 0:03:12
Douglas I was quickly placed on
lockdown. These were the terrifying | 0:03:12 | 0:03:18
sounds from inside. Students huddled
together, shaken, scared, and | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
completely helpless. They leaned on
each other for support as the horror | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
unfolded in front of them. Police
have identified the 19-year-old | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
attacker as Nikolas Cruz. He arrived
on campus heavily armed, with a | 0:03:33 | 0:03:39
semiautomatic rifle and several
magazines of ammunition. He also | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
carried a gas mask and smoke
grenades. It is clear that this was | 0:03:43 | 0:03:48
a well-planned plot to maximise the
loss of life. The shooter set off | 0:03:48 | 0:03:53
the fire alarm to draw children out
of their classrooms. Police warned | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
that the shooter was still at large
even as the rescue operation was | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
underway. Another jolt of terror and
then relief as students realised | 0:04:01 | 0:04:08
SWAT teams and not the shooter had
reached them first. He went up and | 0:04:08 | 0:04:13
down the hallway banging and
shooting into the classrooms, he | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
shot through my door and broke the
window. As soon as the fire drill | 0:04:16 | 0:04:21
went to the kids got evacuated. Then
all of a sudden we heard one of our | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
student government teachers say run
as fast as you can come and we heard | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
a gunshot. 17 children and teachers
killed, more than a dozen injured, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
being treated in local hospitals.
President Trump addressed the nation | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
from the White House and said he
will visit victims and local | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
officials in parkland. Is that the
country needed to tackle the | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
difficult issue of mental health but
was silent on gun control. No child, | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
no teacher should ever be in danger
in an American school. No parent | 0:04:52 | 0:04:59
should ever have to fear for their
sons and their daughters when they | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
kiss them goodbye in the morning.
This is the moment Nikolas Cruz was | 0:05:03 | 0:05:10
finally arrested in a nearby town.
He evaded authorities for almost one | 0:05:10 | 0:05:16
hour, blending in with the swarms of
students fleeing the school. He has | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
now been charged with 17 counts of
premeditated murder and is being | 0:05:21 | 0:05:26
held without bail. Authorities are
piecing together his possible | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
motives. He was expelled from the
school last year for disciplinary | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
reasons and students described him
as troubles. He was on the FBI's | 0:05:34 | 0:05:39
radar since September. He was
flagged up to the agency after he | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
commented on a YouTube video that he
would be a "Professional schools | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
should". The FBI says they
investigated the thread but could | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
not identify the person behind it --
professional school shooter. One of | 0:05:51 | 0:05:57
the safest cities in the country but
it did not stop it from becoming the | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
18th school shooting busier. The
question that seemingly everyone in | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
the nation is now asking is whether
this is the new normal. Tales of | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
heroism are emerging from the
tragedy. One security guard and | 0:06:08 | 0:06:14
football coach is said to have
shielded children as the gunman | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
fired. He did not survive his
injuries. The kids in the community | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
loved him, adored him. He was one of
the greatest people I knew. A | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
phenomenal man. With each shooting
there is the inevitable debate on | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
gun ownership in America. Yet this
country is more divided than ever on | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
how to solve this problem. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:41
Well, there have been numerous
warning signs ahead of this | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
shooting, that is now clear. The
shooter on social media, on YouTube, | 0:06:44 | 0:06:49
declared he would be a professional
school shooter. The FBI knew of the | 0:06:49 | 0:06:54
threat. Here in parkland
administrators warned about his | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
behaviour to teachers. Students even
predicted he could be capable of | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
something like this. So questions
are certainly being raised about | 0:07:01 | 0:07:05
whether opportunities were missed to
prevent this tragedy. But what is | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
also becoming increasingly clear is
that schools will never be | 0:07:09 | 0:07:17
that schools will never be saved, as
things stand. Here in Parkland this | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
school was in lockdown and followed
procedure and have security guards | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
Andy and 17 lives were lost easily.
Nada Tawfik, thank you. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
The former football coach
Barry Bennell has been found guilty | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
of seven more charges of the sexual
abuse of boys in his care. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
He's now been convicted of 43
offences in all against 11 victims. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
He'll be sentenced on Monday. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:36

victims in this case. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
Boys, now men, damaged
by controlling paedophile | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
Barry Bennell. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
Now defiant and waiving
their anonymity to shed light | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
on their shocking
childhood experiences. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
For decades we held our silence just
like our abuser told us | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
to. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:18 | |
For decades we've lived in fear. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:26
Because we might be grown men stood
in front of you now, but we were | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
once a little child. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:31
We are no longer afraid
of you, Barry Bennell. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:39
For years hundreds of us
were groomed in plain view. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
The shame, the nightmares,
the lot... | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
No child should suffer
the way we did. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
How can it be that no one realised
something was wrong? | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
How is it that no one
protected us then? | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
Their remorseless
abuser, now aged 64, | 0:08:54 | 0:09:01
shook his head and laughed
as the jury returned with the last | 0:09:01 | 0:09:06
guilty verdicts today. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
One of football's leading youth
coaches, Barry Bennell | 0:09:10 | 0:09:15
worked with Manchester
City and Crewe. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:16
For him it was cover to get close
to young boys and abuse them. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
"A child molester on an industrial
scale" is how he was | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
described in the trial. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:23
Andy Woodward was also
abused by Bennell. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
When he went public,
other victims broke their | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
silence. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
Andy, if there are any other victims
out there who haven't yet | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
come forward, what would be
your message to them? | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
If there are any other victims,
which I believe there | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
are, it's up to each and every one
of them whether they feel that they | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
are strong enough to come forward
but I hope this has given them some | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
more courage that justice has
been served today. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:49
It is understood more than 80 other
men have come forward to say | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
Bennell abused them. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
This prolific paedophile will be
sentenced next week. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
Danny Savage, BBC News, Liverpool. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:04
The extent of Bennell's abuse has
raised questions about football's | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
handling of the case,
and about how far chances were | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
missed to protect young footballers. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
Our sports editor Dan Roan reports. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:17
He was one of football's top talent
spotters. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
We do a lot of talking to them,
as well as showing them skills | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
and explaining the game. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
There is more to it than just coming
here for an hour a week. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
We give them homework. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:33
But Bennell was also
a serial paedophile. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
Gary Cliffe was one victim,
abused by his former coach | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
when playing for junior teams linked
to Manchester City. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
Every school holiday,
Christmas time, and this is over | 0:10:40 | 0:10:45
a four to five-year period. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:53
He's ruined a lot of lives,
hundreds of boys' lives. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
Manchester City say
they are investigating but Cliffe | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
insists some people at the club
in the '80s would have known | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
about Bennell's behaviour. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:09
They knew what he was
but they allowed it to continue | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
because he was producing results. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:13
Bennell's precise relationship
with Manchester City remains unclear | 0:11:13 | 0:11:15
but we've obtained what is believed
to be a business card | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
the coach handed to young
players and their parents, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
describing himself as
a club representative. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:21
If this is what it appears to be,
it may show how Bennell used City's | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
name to lure some of his victims. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
Simon Cussons was a board director
at Manchester City when Bennell had | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
an association with the club. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
Could more have been done,
do you think, to pay more attention | 0:11:35 | 0:11:43
to the young players
and how they were being | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
looked after and treated? | 0:11:48 | 0:11:49
With hindsight, the
answer is yes, but... | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
Did anybody raise it
at the time or know about it? | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
No. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:55 | |
Simon Cussons died last year before
Manchester City spoke to him | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
as part of their enquiry. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
The club has now identified another
alleged paedophile, now deceased, | 0:12:01 | 0:12:05
with whom they had potential
connections and face the threat of | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
legal action. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
Bennell was most closely linked
with Crewe Alexandra, | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
where he was youth team coach
in the late '80s. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
Hamilton Smith was the managing
director at the time and he says | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
that, after being made aware
of concerns and rumours | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
about Bennell's behaviour,
he raised the issue in a board | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
meeting, but the coach was allowed
to stay for three more years. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:27
The meeting that we had, the special
board meeting that we had, and they | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
are still saying they didn't know
something was going on? I went to | 0:12:31 | 0:12:36
the FA to talk to them about my
concerns. And ended up getting a | 0:12:36 | 0:12:41
Dear John letter, which said they
had investigated, and found nothing | 0:12:41 | 0:12:48
to be answered. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
Everybody involved could have done,
and should have done a lot more. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:57
The then manager, Dario Gradi,
was one of those who Smith says | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
was aware of general concerns
about Bennell's behaviour. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:08
Now the club's director of football,
he denies having had any knowledge | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
of Bennell's crimes,
but he was suspended | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
by the FA in 2016. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
Crewe say they were unaware
of Bennell's behaviour | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
before his first of three previous
convictions in 1994, | 0:13:17 | 0:13:21
But just over a year ago the full
extent of the football abuse scandal | 0:13:21 | 0:13:26
was exposed. It is massive, it is
huge. And the ripple effect through | 0:13:26 | 0:13:31
football, I hope people are
listening. Former England | 0:13:31 | 0:13:36
international Paul Stewart revealed
the extent of the abuse he had been | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
subject to buy a different
paedophile. Horrific. How long did | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
it go on for. For years. Almost
every day. And as more players spoke | 0:13:42 | 0:13:50
out the chairman of the FA launched
a review into the subject. We are | 0:13:50 | 0:13:55
making sure we do what we can to
step up to the mark. With police | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
forces investigating and fund was
set up for the victims, 285 | 0:13:59 | 0:14:06
potential victims identified and 331
clubs involved. Youth football is | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
now more regulated than when Barry
Bennell was coaching and abusing | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
that the game 's most notorious
paedophile continues to want the | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
sport. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21

yet seemed abashed. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:11
In his first words as President,
the tone was consciously humble. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:19
When one is elected in this type
of position, you basically become | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
a servant of the people
of South Africa, and I'll seek | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
to execute that task
with humility, faithfulness | 0:15:26 | 0:15:27
and with dignity as well. | 0:15:27 | 0:15:35
That is what I will seek to do. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
For now, his party enemies
are defeated and the country | 0:15:41 | 0:15:43
is broadly behind him. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:48
But, on the other side
of Table Mountain from Parliament, | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
a sense of the challenge facing
the new leader. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:54
Here in Langa township,
they welcome Ramaphosa | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
but expect him to deliver
houses, jobs, services. | 0:15:56 | 0:16:00
We are still living in sheds. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:08
We, our mothers and fathers lived
in shacks, and we the children | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
and obviously our grandchildren have
to live in shacks also. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
Mr Ramaphosa, we vote for him,
give him a chance and see | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
if he will do things better,
different than Mr J Zuma. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:22
After years when their party
was tainted by corruption | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
and losing electoral support,
ANC Members of Parliament | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
are daring to hope. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:33
There is a great deal of joy here,
but also expectation. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
Cyril Ramaphosa will have to move
quickly to answer people's | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
needs on the economy and,
above all, corruption. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:46

We all know that highly processed
foods should be eaten in moderation, | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
but now research suggests
they could be linked | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
to an increased risk of cancer. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:38
Mass-produced bread and cakes,
chicken nuggets and instant noodles | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
are being classified
as "ultra-processed" | 0:17:40 | 0:17:41
and potentially harmful. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:48
The study of over 100,000 people
hinted that, the more | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
of such foods people ate,
the greater their risk of cancer. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
Our Health Correspondent
James Gallagher has more. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
Pizza and fizzy drinks
are ultra-processed foods, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
but so too are bread
and breakfast cereals. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
They are some of the nation's
favourite foods but new concerns | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
have been raised by French
scientists. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:11
They think the way these foods
are produced or packaged may be | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
raising the risk of cancer. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
It may come as a surprise but around
half the foods we eat | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
are classed as ultra-processed. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:20
That generally means they're made
in a factory with a huge list | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
of ingredients down the side
of the packet. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:29
We know they're bad for our
waistlines, but could they be bad | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
for our health in other ways too? | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
The French study looked
at nearly 105,000 people. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
They were quite young
with an average age of 43. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
The results showed a 10% increase
in ultra-processed foods was linked | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
to a 12% increase in the risk
of cancer, and an 11% increase | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
in breast cancer risk. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:52
But critics say the term
"ultra-processed" encompasses | 0:18:52 | 0:18:53
so many foods it's hard to work out
what's really going | 0:18:53 | 0:18:58
on, and while this research | 0:18:58 | 0:18:59
has found hints
of a link with cancer, | 0:18:59 | 0:19:01
it's not definitive. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
So do we need to bin the bread? | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
We should not be panicking. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
I think as all of us know,
highly processed foods like these - | 0:19:09 | 0:19:14
so things like pizza,
crisps and chips - are not | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
things we should be making
the main focus of our diet. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
This study adds to our understanding
but it's not saying anything new, | 0:19:19 | 0:19:21
and it certainly isn't saying
we need to throw these foods | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
away out of our cupboards. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:25
Gorging on huge amounts of processed
food will make us fat | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
and being overweight is the biggest
preventable cause of | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
cancer after smoking. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:35
For health experts, the study
is a timely reminder | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
we all need to improve our diets. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
On average our diets
are unhealthy in this country. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
We all, on average, need to take
steps to improve our diet so, yes, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:47
take the results of this study
seriously and make changes. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:53
The Saxtons from Doncaster
say processed food is | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
a fact of family life. | 0:19:55 | 0:20:01
You think, well how can you avoid
buying ultra-processed | 0:20:01 | 0:20:03
food unless you grow
everything yourself basically. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
I think evening is not as difficult
as the mornings, I think, | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
in terms of breakfasts. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:08
That's very difficult to rule out
cereal and toast on a day-to-day | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
basis when you're doing the school
run and rushing to get out the door. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
Any dangers lurking in these foods
are continuing to be investigated, | 0:20:15 | 0:20:17
but eating less of this and more
of this is clearly | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
good for your health. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
James Gallagher, BBC News. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:28
The former executive at the centre
of claims of sexual misconduct | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
by Oxfam staff in Haiti and Chad has
given his version of | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
events for the first time
since the scandal broke. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
In an open letter,
Roland Van Hauwermeiren said | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
he was "not a saint",
but insisted he hadn't | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
paid women for sex. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:43
Gavin Lee is in Knokke in Belgium,
where Mr Van Hauwermeiren lives. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:51
Gavin. As you say, it's the first
time Roland Van Hauwermeiren has | 0:20:52 | 0:20:59
broken his silence after a week
where the allegations have been | 0:20:59 | 0:21:03
building and building. As director
for operations for Oxfam in 2011, | 0:21:03 | 0:21:09
and with a British different charity
in 2004 in Liberia. He spoke to | 0:21:09 | 0:21:16
reporters on his doorstep and gave a
different account, he said it was | 0:21:16 | 0:21:20
lies and exaggeration. He spoke
about how in the last week since the | 0:21:20 | 0:21:28
allegations his family hadn't spoken
to him. He also posted an open | 0:21:28 | 0:21:33
letter to the media today, he went
through detail by detail how he | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
didn't believe any of these
allegations from Liberia onwards, | 0:21:37 | 0:21:42
specifically in Haiti saying he was
involved in a sexual relationship | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
with a Haitian woman but didn't pay
for prostitution and she wasn't a | 0:21:45 | 0:21:51
victim of the earthquake. We are
hearing that high-profile figures | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
including the | 0:21:55 | 0:22:00
including the South African
Archbishop Desmond Tutu has left the | 0:22:00 | 0:22:06
organisation and said he was
disappointed with the allegations. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
Thank you. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:10
Members of British Steel's pension
scheme were the victims of a "major | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
mis-selling scandal". | 0:22:13 | 0:22:14
MPs on the Work and Pensions
Committee say the scheme's members | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
were targeted by "vulture" financial
advisers, who encouraged them | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
to transfer their savings
to "unsuitable funds." | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
It happened when the pension
fund was hived off | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
in order to keep the UK company,
owned by the Indian | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
firm Tata, afloat. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:26
Sian Lloyd reports. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
"Exploited.... | 0:22:30 | 0:22:31
For cynical personal gain. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
Shamelessly bamboozled by dubious
financial advisers." | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
The words of a report today by MPs
about steelworkers who devoted years | 0:22:37 | 0:22:42
to the industry but face changes
to their pension scheme. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
Some had the option of transferring
their benefits to private schemes, | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
but what happened has been described
as a mis-selling scandal. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:55
Yes, we've been let down
with the trustees, we've been let | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
down by Tata as a company. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
We uncovered the case
of Richard Bevan who had | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
transferred his savings
into a private scheme. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:08
He believes the financial advice
he was given was unsuitable | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
and resulted in him losing
out on £200,000. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
He welcomes the scrutiny by MPs
but says it's too late for him. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
Where that leaves people like myself
I really don't know. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
It may highlight the fact for other
pension schemes in the future, | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
and this may not happen
on this scale again. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
Hopefully it doesn't,
but that's little comfort to people | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
like myself, you know? | 0:23:27 | 0:23:32
The report noted that the regulator,
the Financial Conduct Authority, | 0:23:32 | 0:23:34
only acted two months
after we highlighted Richard's case. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
It calls for the authorities
to be more proactive. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:44
There are large numbers of people
who will do other people down | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
when it comes to money,
and therefore what we want is robust | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
regulators who don't wait to be
pushed into it but actually | 0:23:50 | 0:23:55
are on the lookout,
on the front foot, thinking, | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
"these are our responsibilities". | 0:23:57 | 0:24:03
The Financial Conduct Authority told
us that following what happened | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
to steelworkers at plants like this
one in Port Talbot, | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
it's reviewing its rules
on pension transfers. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:13
But some experts say that
what happened here should be | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
a wake-up call to the industry. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:21
This is not uncommon. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
We have seen BHS and Carillion
are similar examples of this, | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
so the individual details will vary
but these situations will arise | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
again so it is important the lessons
are learned from this case. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:33
Pension freedom reforms have led
to a boom in similar | 0:24:33 | 0:24:35
transfers over recent years. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:40
This report highlights that workers
like Richard need more protection. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
Sian Lloyd, BBC News, Port Talbot. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:48
Team GB could be about to win
its first medal of the 2018 | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
Winter Olympics after Dom Parsons
put himself in contention | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
in the men's skeleton competition. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:56
The 30-year-old is in fourth place
at the halfway stage | 0:24:56 | 0:24:58
ahead of the final runs tomorrow. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
In the curling, Britain's men
earned their second win with a tense | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
victory over Japan,
while the women's team | 0:25:04 | 0:25:05
lost their second match. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
There are flashing images
in this report from Andy | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
Swiss from Pyeongchang. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
Here he is for Great Britain. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
Run two, Dom Parsons. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:20
He arrived an outsider,
he's now a contender. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
Dom Parsons is ranked
just 12th in the world, | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
but wearing Team GB's much discussed
new skin suit, he was | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
out to prove his pace. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:28
Well, Dom Parsons is
flying around this track. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:36
He did look so impressive
in his training runs here, | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
but can he back it up with a big
performance when it really matters? | 0:25:43 | 0:25:47
The answer was encouraging. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:48
Dom Parsons goes to the front! | 0:25:48 | 0:25:49
Come on, Dom! | 0:25:49 | 0:25:50
He ended up fourth at the halfway
stage, just three hundredths | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
of a second off the medal places. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:55
Tomorrow could be special. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:56
The medal chase for
Britain is on here! | 0:25:56 | 0:25:57
I hope I can sleep tonight. | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
Yes, it's like the last four years
obviously I've just been aiming | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
for this one moment so I'm
going to make the most of it. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
From the ice to the snow,
it was a day for speed. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal making
history in the men's downhill. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
At 35, the oldest ever champion. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:15
Oh, she's down! | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
In the women's giant slalom
meanwhile, the photographers got | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
an unexpected close-up. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
Both they and Switzerland's Lara Gut
thankfully unscathed. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:26
By the end they had a new focus,
America's Mikaela Shiffrin the first | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
of potentially several golds here. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:34
But for sheer thrills
and spills, today's medal | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
goes to snowboard cross. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
In particular France's Pierre
Vaultier, who crashed | 0:26:39 | 0:26:40
in his semifinal, got up,
scraped through, and then | 0:26:40 | 0:26:42
only went and won it. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:47
Rarely has persistence paid
off quite so perfectly. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
Andy Swiss, BBC News, Pyeongchang. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:55
Time for a look at the weather. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Here's Stav Danaos. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
Good evening. It's been quite a
mixture of weather today. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:11
mixture of weather today. In the
north and particularly in Scotland | 0:27:11 | 0:27:13
we have seen heavy snow showers.
They are going to continue on and | 0:27:13 | 0:27:18
off through the overnight period,
some for Northern Ireland and maybe | 0:27:18 | 0:27:23
the odd one further south for
Northern England. A nice -- risk of | 0:27:23 | 0:27:29
ice where we have had those showers
and a cold night with frost to | 0:27:29 | 0:27:34
contend with for Friday morning.
That said, Friday is not looking too | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
bad. A lot of dry weather around and
further showers for the north west | 0:27:39 | 0:27:44
of Scotland. More of a breeze here
as well. Temperature wise not to bad | 0:27:44 | 0:27:49
across the south, 8-10d and a cool
feel across Scotland and Northern | 0:27:49 | 0:27:54
Ireland. On Saturday it looks like a
milder day. More cloud across | 0:27:54 | 0:28:02
western areas thanks to a west
south-westerly breeze. A few showers | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
dotted around. A better chance of
staying dry the further east you are | 0:28:05 | 0:28:11
with temperatures 8-11d. Even milder
across Scotland too. This feature | 0:28:11 | 0:28:17
running in on Sunday looks like it
will thicken the cloud, certainly | 0:28:17 | 0:28:21
across western parts of the country.
We could see drizzle and low cloud | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
at times. Across the south-east it
will be a largely dried picture. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:32
Even some gaps appearing to the east
of the Pennines and north-east of | 0:28:32 | 0:28:36
Scotland too. Despite the cloud,
temperatures nine - 11 degrees. | 0:28:36 | 0:28:42
There are signs of things turning
much colder by the end of the week. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
That's all from the BBC News at Six
so it's goodbye from me | 0:28:45 | 0:29:02 |
