of jobs here. The Government has already pushed through a series of

benefit changes it hopes will discourage a large influx. Here's

our Political Correspondent, Ross Hawkins. Who should be allowed into

live and work in Great Britain? Few questions are as politically charged

and some of the Romanians arriving at this airport today seem to know

it. I came to work in this country. Open the border and I come to work

to make money and go home. I am here to work. If they have jobs, I will

work. There was plenty of scrutiny of them today. Happy New Year,

everybody! And there will be scrutiny too for politicians who

spent weeks reassuring voters. From today there will be a three-month

delay before migrants can claim job-seeker's allowance although they

have not said how many people that will affect. After six months is,

migrants will have to show they have a good chance of getting a job to

receive benefits. They can be barred from coming back for up to a year as

well. These changes will make sure people are coming here for the right

reasons, to work and to contribute. And not to try and claim from the

benefit system. One factor behind all the attention for arrivals at

Luton today is an estimate made ten years ago when eight new countries

entered the EU, and there were no temporary work restrictions in the

UK. 13,000 people were expected to travel to the country but in the

end, hundreds of thousands came, and that has had a profound affect on

the sometimes stormy politics of immigration. Looking back, Labour

admits they got it wrong in the past and a debate is needed now. This is

a crucial party political issue. The European elections are coming and

they fear voters could turn to UKIP. There is a huge benefit in open-door

migration but you have to weigh it up with social benefits and with

those who are unemployed. You have to weigh it up with the cost of

primary school education. You have to weigh it up with the social cost

of communities that feel very divided. Some employers are looking

to migrants to fill vacancies. This jobs website has 5,000 positions on

offer here. It will take more than a New Year's Day trip to the airport

to get a clear view on how many will visit Britain and the impact they

will have. Politicians in Romania and Bulgaria say the numbers likely

to leave their countries have been overstated. The situation today is

very different from the one which existed during the last significant

expansion of the European Union a decade ago, when Poland and a number

of other Eastern European countries joined, as our Home Editor Mark

Easton explains. This time is different. In 2004, most of Europe

had temporary restrictions preventing others from working in

their countries. Sweden, Ireland and the UK offered free access. A large

proportion of migrant workers headed for Britain. This time, the UK is

among eight countries who have had restrictions on Romanians and

Bulgarians working in them. So, migrants from Romania and Bulgaria

can choose any of these countries. There was a good reason to think

they may not choose Britain. Spain has a Romanian population of 800,000

already, and their languages are similar. Germany, with historic

links, has 300,000. The UK has 100,000. It is a similar story for

bald area. A quarter of a million are already in Spain, compared to

50,000 in Britain. How many will come? Some people are predict Dean

50,000 a year. Some research from the previous government suggests

fewer than 13,000 will come each year. Ministers are refusing to put

a figure on it, saying no one will know. The answer will depend on how

attractive written will look as a place for a foreigner to set up

home. And Ross Hawkins is here now. We will get some figures, won't we,

to suggest whether that has been a big influx? Ministers did not come

up with a forecast because they said they could not do it accurately, and

probably knew voters could not trust any figures they brought out. We

will get some figures in May and that information is scheduled to

come out just a week before the European elections, you can imagine

the impact that that will have. This is not just a story about numbers.

Government are aware of individual stories of individual behaviour and

that is why, in part, they are keen to take us to information about the

measures they have taken. Police and coastguard teams in Cornwall have

spent the day searching search for a 27-year-old man who was washed out

to sea overnight. The man from Guildford in Surrey was swimming

with a group of friends on a beach in Porthleven in the early hours of

this morning. The search has now been called off for the night and

will resume in the morning. Michael Schumacher remains critical but

stable in hospital in France, where he's being treated for severe brain

injuries. The seven-time Formula One motor racing champion hit his head

during a skiing accident at the weekend. Maddy Savage is outside the

hospital in Grenoble where he's being treated. Maddy. Well, Michael

Schumacher is still in a medically induced coma here tonight so that

doctors can continue to monitor him closely and try and reduce some of

the swelling around his reign. His manager was here earlier and she

described his condition as stable and said that that was good news but

we needed to consider this in context of his wider situation which

she described as critical, and one that could change at any moment.

Over the past few days, doctors have been cautious about speculating too

far into the future and do not want to comment on the long-term impact

of his accident. They want to focus on his immediate care, they say. He

is due to turn 45 years old on Friday, and his family remain at his

bedside. Doctors treating the former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

say his condition has seriously deteriorated. Mr Sharon, who is 85,

has been in a coma for eight years, after suffering a major stroke.

Israeli media reports claim he is suffering from kidney problems and

his family are at his bedside in hospital. At least eight people have

been killed after two car bombs exploded outside a hotel in the

Somalian capital. In his first New Year message, Pope Francis called

for an end to violence around the world. In an address to crowds in

Saint Peter's Square in Rome he called on people to respect each

other and accept their differences. He also said everyone needed to

commit to building a more just and caring society. The U.S. State of

Colorado has become the first to allow shops to sell cannabis

legally. We have some legal Weed! Queues formed outside as eager

customers waited to buy up to an ounce of the drug for personal use.

Stores selling cannabis will be licensed and the drug taxed like

alcohol. It's expected to raise 80 million dollars for state finances.

Now, with the main sports news of New Year's Day, here's Olly Foster

at the BBC Sport Centre. There was a full fixture list in the Premier

League today with goals in all ten matches and they're on Match of the

Day straight after the news. But if you want the results, then here they

come. Arsenal are still top of the table. Theo Walcott with one of

their goals in the 2-0 win against Cardiff City. It had been 0-0 with

two minutes to play. Former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar

Solskjaer was at the match and is expected to be confirmed as the new

Cardiff manager tomorrow. The Champions Manchester United are now

11 points off the top after being stunned by Tottenham at home.

Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen scored for Spurs in their

2-1 win. Elsewhere Crystal Palace dropped into the relegation zone

after drawing against Norwich. Fulham are out of the bottom three,

beating fellow strugglers West Ham 2-1. Liverpool are in the top four

after beating Hull. Chelsea are still third after a 3-0 win at

Southampton. Everton could only draw at Stoke. Second placed Manchester

City overcame Swansea 3-2, there were also wins for Aston Villa and

West Browich Albion. In the Scottish Premiership, Celtic are still 11

points clear as they beat Partick Thistle 1-0 thanks to Joe Ledley.

Aberdeen came from behind to beat Dundee United 2-1. There were also

wins for Ross County and Motherwell. The Final Ashes Test starts tomorrow

night with Australia looking to complete a 5-0-whitewash in the

series. Ahead of the match, the Australia fast-bowler Mitchell

Johnson has accused England's batsmen of time-wasting tactics. Our

chief sports correspondent Dan Roan reports from Sydney. Personable and

approachable off the field, this is not the Mitchell Johnson that

England are familiar with. They know the snarling speed bowler who

confronted Kevin Pietersen at the last test in Melbourne, accusing him

of hacking away at a delivery. He went further today. He needed to

stop doing it. He should be watching the game. Yes, I will not back down

if it happens again. Johnson was more charitable as the Australians

swapped Green for pink to support breast cancer charity. England would

like to start the New Year with a fresh start but after a tour to

forget, a five - zero whitewash seems inevitable. All eyes are on

Alistair Cooke for England's next move amid the confusion. One of the

new recruits insists row is intact. We had a good session. We ran around

and got good catches and everything. The spirit is brilliant and we are

trying our best to win in Sydney. At an audience with the Australian

Prime Minister, England looked like the elite international team, and

they will now be desperate to play like one as well. With the

Australian Open just over two weeks away, Andy Murray says he's going to

have to get used to playing at the highest level again. After having

back surgery in September, he lost in the second round of the Qatar

Open to the World number 40 Florian Meyer. This was Murray's first

competitive tournament since the operation. He lost in three sets.

Dutchman Michael van Gerwen won the first four against Scotland's Peter

Wright. Van Gerwen is the favourite and was runner up last year, Wright

has made a match of it Van Gerwen leads 6-4. He took the ?250,000

CHEERING Billed as a world first, not only an
