The Army is tonight on standby in Cumbria, with six inches

:00:21.:00:25.

of rain forecast to fall over Christmas night into Boxing Day.

:00:26.:00:28.

People in the county have been warned to prepare for

:00:29.:00:31.

The Government's crisis response committee COBRA will meet tomorrow

:00:32.:00:36.

Parts of Cumbria have been flooded three times in the past month,

:00:37.:00:41.

as our correspondent Danny Savage reports from Kendall.

:00:42.:00:44.

River levels have been up and down for weeks now in Cumbria,

:00:45.:00:47.

but more wet weather means they're set to

:00:48.:00:49.

rise sharply again over the next couple of days and cause more

:00:50.:00:53.

So they're putting out the sand bags again.

:00:54.:00:59.

I would rather be chastised for getting things in place and it

:01:00.:01:05.

not happening, for somebody who says it's not going to happen

:01:06.:01:08.

They've only just finished stripping out these

:01:09.:01:13.

Possessions that were saved are once again at risk.

:01:14.:01:18.

They've never known a month like it here.

:01:19.:01:21.

For people that don't live in Cumbria, how bad has

:01:22.:01:24.

We're watching the river go up and down

:01:25.:01:34.

People are getting back on their feet a little bit.

:01:35.:01:39.

The Government's emergency response committee will hold a COBRA meeting

:01:40.:01:44.

on Christmas Day to discuss the situation, such is the level

:01:45.:01:47.

I think we need to be seriously worried.

:01:48.:01:52.

Although this river seems quite low now, if you had another 60,

:01:53.:01:55.

80, 100 millimetres of rain, it could come

:01:56.:01:57.

That's not just true here, it's true in Keswick,

:01:58.:02:03.

And for so many people hit by flood soing far,

:02:04.:02:08.

the festivities are the least of their concerns.

:02:09.:02:11.

The reality of Christmas is they're just

:02:12.:02:14.

bearing through it and probably looking forward to Christmas

:02:15.:02:17.

Their focus is getting long-term accommodation and getting

:02:18.:02:22.

So from tomorrow, once again, attention will

:02:23.:02:28.

be focussed on river levels here in Cumbria.

:02:29.:02:30.

It seems for people living here, there's just no let up.

:02:31.:02:33.

More rain is the last thing Cumbria needs

:02:34.:02:36.

The misery of flooding is set to continue.

:02:37.:02:41.

A woman in her 70s has died, after a car ploughed into a coffee

:02:42.:02:46.

shop in Westerham in Kent this morning.

:02:47.:02:47.

Five more people were taken to hospital -

:02:48.:02:50.

four with serious injuries and one with minor injuries.

:02:51.:02:53.

The car remained embedded in the window of Costa coffee

:02:54.:02:55.

all day, before being taken away for examination

:02:56.:02:58.

Tonight, the car was pulled out of the cafe.

:02:59.:03:04.

It will be thoroughly examined by the police for any clues

:03:05.:03:06.

And this was the scene soon after the crash.

:03:07.:03:11.

The car had embedded itself right inside the cafe,

:03:12.:03:14.

I actually heard that big bang outside

:03:15.:03:19.

One of the Costa staff asked me to see a woman behind the counter.

:03:20.:03:25.

She didn't reply back, but I can see clearly she is dead.

:03:26.:03:34.

Hours later, the car remained lodged in the coffee shop.

:03:35.:03:38.

Two people on board were cut free by the Fire Service.

:03:39.:03:41.

A woman in her 70s was declared dead at the scene.

:03:42.:03:48.

The car first lost control up the street there.

:03:49.:03:50.

These flourescent markers show its path

:03:51.:03:53.

It was full of people kicking off their Christmas eve.

:03:54.:04:04.

A total of five people were taken to hospital.

:04:05.:04:06.

Two men and two women were seriously injured,

:04:07.:04:09.

The police investigation is ongoing, but it appears to be

:04:10.:04:14.

We had a coordinated approach, to deal with

:04:15.:04:19.

the casualties first, that was our main priority

:04:20.:04:21.

to save life and make sure that there weren't any more

:04:22.:04:24.

Once that was done, we got a count and helped

:04:25.:04:29.

We then slow the scene down to carry on with the investigation and get

:04:30.:04:35.

A few of its residents, who popped into a coffee

:04:36.:04:42.

shop on Christmas eve, will be spending Christmas Day in hospital.

:04:43.:04:45.

Two Burmese men have been convicted - and sentenced to death -

:04:46.:04:51.

for murdering two UK tourists in Thailand.

:04:52.:04:54.

The bodies of backpackers Hannah Witheridge and David Miller

:04:55.:04:58.

were found on an island beach in September last year.

:04:59.:05:01.

From Thailand, Jonathan Head reports.

:05:02.:05:03.

Arriving at court to hear their fate - two young Burmese men charged

:05:04.:05:06.

with a horrific crime on a holiday island.

:05:07.:05:11.

David Miller and Hannah Witheridge had been doing what so many young

:05:12.:05:15.

Britons do at their age - backpacking through Thailand.

:05:16.:05:18.

Their battered bodies were found last year on this beach

:05:19.:05:21.

From the start, the police investigation was marred

:05:22.:05:27.

When they detained the two suspects, they were put

:05:28.:05:41.

They both also retracted their earlier confessions,

:05:42.:05:47.

saying they'd been threatened and beaten.

:05:48.:05:49.

There were many doubts expressed about the prosecution case,

:05:50.:05:52.

not just by the defence lawyers but also by international forensic

:05:53.:05:55.

experts, in particular about the central piece of evidence,

:05:56.:05:58.

the police DNA tests, which they said were unreliable.

:05:59.:06:01.

None of that was sufficient to sway the judges, who insisted the tests

:06:02.:06:04.

were up to international standards and enough to justify a guilty

:06:05.:06:09.

The emphatic outcome of this drawn-out trial gave some

:06:10.:06:17.

satisfaction to the family of David Miller, who attended the hearing.

:06:18.:06:21.

We believe that the result today represents justice

:06:22.:06:24.

It is our opinion that the evidence against Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin

:06:25.:06:30.

It was a very different experience for the mothers of the two convicted

:06:31.:06:38.

Now, they plan to appeal against the verdict,

:06:39.:06:45.

Europe's migrant crisis has been one of the defining stories of the year,

:06:46.:06:57.

with more than a million people making their way

:06:58.:07:00.

through the continent, in search of a better life.

:07:01.:07:02.

16-year-old Nujeen Mustafa, a teenager who escaped the Syrian

:07:03.:07:06.

Our special correspondent, Fergal Keane, first met her

:07:07.:07:12.

in September on the Serbian-Hungarian border.

:07:13.:07:14.

In a new country, it is a season of change.

:07:15.:07:23.

Three months after reaching Europe, Nujeen Mustafa has found a new life.

:07:24.:07:30.

Germany is as I expected her to be, beautiful.

:07:31.:07:35.

My life is as regular as I wanted her to be.

:07:36.:07:40.

The girl who is waking up early and going to school every day,

:07:41.:07:45.

This was how she arrived, suffering from

:07:46.:07:54.

Her epic journey from the Middle East made in a wheelchair

:07:55.:08:00.

I first met her in September, stranded on the closed Hungarian

:08:01.:08:05.

I'd love to be an astronaut, to go out and see and find

:08:06.:08:11.

And on she travelled, across European borders.

:08:12.:08:22.

No. They said to some camp or something.

:08:23.:08:37.

Or where they're going to send you after this?

:08:38.:08:45.

Onto Germany and the reunion with a beloved brother,

:08:46.:08:54.

Nujeen shares this flat with her older sister.

:08:55.:09:07.

She dreams of walking and has started

:09:08.:09:10.

Her parents are still living as refugees in Turkey,

:09:11.:09:16.

where they fled to escape the fighting.

:09:17.:09:19.

If I asked you what your Christmas wish is, what is it?

:09:20.:09:22.

Nujeen has come this far by force of her own

:09:23.:09:37.

personality, the love of family and the kindness of strangers.

:09:38.:09:40.

There's no telling what she may achieve in the years to come.

:09:41.:09:45.

And finally, people from across the world have come

:09:46.:09:54.

to Bethlehem in celebration of Christmas.

:09:55.:09:57.

Festivities went ahead in Manger Square, despite high

:09:58.:10:00.

security following recent violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

:10:01.:10:03.

Meanwhile, midnight mass has been celebrated at the Vatican in Rome.

:10:04.:10:06.

Thousands gathered in St Peter's Square to celebrate Christmas.

:10:07.:10:08.

Inside, Pope Francis called upon Catholics around the globe

:10:09.:10:11.

to show compassion towards one another

:10:12.:10:13.

:10:14.:10:20.

From all of us here, have a wonderful Christmas.

:10:21.:10:37.

A very merry evening to you. I'm sure it is quite merry for some of

:10:38.:10:40.

us
