As more stormy weather is forecast tonight, | :00:00. | :00:00.
a warning that people in parts of northern England could face | :00:07. | :00:09.
Urgent work is underway to repair flood defences, | :00:10. | :00:15.
as the north-west of England and southern Scotland are said | :00:16. | :00:17.
It looks like storm after storm is coming, | :00:18. | :00:21.
and, if that happens, there may well be floods again. | :00:22. | :00:26.
In the town of Tadcaster in north Yorkshire, the main bridge has | :00:27. | :00:29.
collapsed following the severe flooding. | :00:30. | :00:33.
And in York, during the day, people have been assessing | :00:34. | :00:36.
the damage caused in their city by the recent floods. | :00:37. | :00:42.
Also today, a would-be suicide bomber and his wife have been found | :00:43. | :00:45.
guilty of planning a terror attack in London earlier this year. | :00:46. | :00:52.
And, worldwide, tributes to Lemmy of Motorhead. | :00:53. | :00:55.
His admirers say he was "one of the last true rock stars". | :00:56. | :01:19.
People in the north-west of England, already affected by flooding, | :01:20. | :01:23.
have been warned that they could face a "very bad situation" | :01:24. | :01:26.
with the arrival of another storm tonight. | :01:27. | :01:28.
The extreme weather could also affect people in southern | :01:29. | :01:30.
As well as parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. | :01:31. | :01:39.
During the day, the people of York have been assessing the damage | :01:40. | :01:42.
caused in their city by the severe flooding. | :01:43. | :01:44.
So let's join our correspondent Jeremy Cooke who is there this | :01:45. | :01:47.
Let's start off that is that the water levels that | :01:48. | :01:55.
were about up to here yesterday, as you can see, have dramatically | :01:56. | :01:57.
dropped during the course of the day. That means for this | :01:58. | :02:00.
bed-and-breakfast business, other residents around here, it has been a | :02:01. | :02:04.
day of clearing out and assessing the damage and what has been lost. | :02:05. | :02:08.
But I have to say, this area is still surrounded by water, and it is | :02:09. | :02:13.
still having a very serious impact. Tonight, after days of resisting the | :02:14. | :02:19.
tolerant, the bridge over the river wealth in Tadcaster finally, | :02:20. | :02:22.
dramatically, succumbed, collapsing into the water below. The impact of | :02:23. | :02:29.
these floods will be felt by this community for months to come. It is | :02:30. | :02:34.
all a reminder that this is not over yet. Despite today's sunshine, | :02:35. | :02:39.
communities along the river whose still fighting to hold back the | :02:40. | :02:46.
water -- the River Ouse. The ancient city of York struggling to emerge | :02:47. | :02:50.
from the worst floods in years. Flying over all of this water in | :02:51. | :02:54.
this kind of weather looks dramatic and spectacular, and even quite | :02:55. | :02:58.
beautiful, but what you realise, of course, is that it is down there on | :02:59. | :03:01.
the ground, down in places like Huntington Road, that things are | :03:02. | :03:08.
very ugly. The flood has left its mark here. That is the how is it got | :03:09. | :03:15.
too on Boxing Day. Jason and Jack, among those returning home for the | :03:16. | :03:20.
1st time. Their beekeeping business lost to the rising waters. It keeps | :03:21. | :03:26.
you up at night, you just keep cycling through your head. I haven't | :03:27. | :03:30.
been able to sleep, it is terrible. You have just got to keep smiling. | :03:31. | :03:35.
Around the corner, it is all hands to the pumps for the Felt family. | :03:36. | :03:41.
Calculating what has been lost and of course the insurance. We may not | :03:42. | :03:47.
claim on it, we need to look what is the best thing to do, if it is | :03:48. | :03:51.
better not to claim and clean it up. York is coming out of this disaster. | :03:52. | :03:55.
Look at the difference 24 hours has made. But, as the waters retreat, | :03:56. | :04:00.
the questions for ministers keep coming. We have spent an incredible | :04:01. | :04:05.
amount of money on flood defences over the last 10 years, we will | :04:06. | :04:08.
again over the next 6, but if more needs to happen, more needs to | :04:09. | :04:13.
happen. The focus here now is all about cleaning up and moving on, | :04:14. | :04:17.
throwing out what has been destroyed and facing the future. The worst of | :04:18. | :04:22.
it is being homeless. I can't tell you how money offers we have had of | :04:23. | :04:25.
homes and everything, but you just want your own. Would it be rotten of | :04:26. | :04:32.
me to say happy New Year? No, I'm hoping once this is over, next year | :04:33. | :04:38.
is my new start. For a feud, a very few, there is actually fun to be had | :04:39. | :04:43.
here. For most, though, it is a matter of holding on, waiting for | :04:44. | :04:47.
the great flood of 2015 to pass into history. Back to the news that the | :04:48. | :04:56.
bridge in Tadcaster has collapsed, 1 of the bridges, we have an update | :04:57. | :05:00.
from the environment agency and they say there is now a danger that there | :05:01. | :05:04.
will be significant flooding as a result in the area. Those in the | :05:05. | :05:08.
area, it says, are advised to evacuate immediately. The situation | :05:09. | :05:19.
is serious and there is a serious threat to life. | :05:20. | :05:22.
Let's stay in York, because one of the city's most popular | :05:23. | :05:24.
attractions, the Jorvik Viking Centre, has been badly affected | :05:25. | :05:26.
by the floods, and closed to visitors. | :05:27. | :05:29.
They managed to save their most valuable exhibits, some | :05:30. | :05:31.
of which date back to the 9th century, but there's no plan yet | :05:32. | :05:34.
to reopen, as our correspondent Fiona Trott reports. | :05:35. | :05:40.
How does it make you feel, Sarah, looking at the museum like this? | :05:41. | :05:45.
It is fairly depressing really, it is upsetting. | :05:46. | :05:50.
The Jorvik Centre attracts 400,000 visitors to this | :05:51. | :05:53.
What it means going forwards at the moment we have to get rid | :05:54. | :06:08.
of all this water that is the next thing, and just see | :06:09. | :06:11.
How are you going to do that, it is really deep? | :06:12. | :06:14.
Yes, we have got to find some bumps, but of | :06:15. | :06:17.
course the pumps of York are all active at the moment, | :06:18. | :06:19.
so we are waiting to actually get hold of some | :06:20. | :06:22.
pumps and start pumping out as the rivers go down to actually | :06:23. | :06:24.
Across town, at a secret location, items | :06:25. | :06:28.
rescued from the museum are carefully counted. | :06:29. | :06:33.
This one is especially special to us, because it | :06:34. | :06:37.
is a Viking age sock, the only Viking age sock found | :06:38. | :06:39.
These are priceless, it is a representation | :06:40. | :06:42.
of a significant part of York and the | :06:43. | :06:44.
A Viking period over 1,000 years old, superb | :06:45. | :06:50.
artefacts not represented anywhere else in the country | :06:51. | :06:55.
Finally, what the museum has been waiting for, | :06:56. | :06:59.
a pump has arrived, and there would have been | :07:00. | :07:03.
even more water if it wasn't for quick thinking staff. | :07:04. | :07:07.
Basically, a member of staff noticed that water | :07:08. | :07:10.
could potentially come into the centre so we decided | :07:11. | :07:13.
to take this fire door off, put it into place and seal it | :07:14. | :07:17.
with silicon and bitumen, and it bought us a great | :07:18. | :07:19.
It will take time to this museum to get back on its feet. | :07:20. | :07:25.
Right now, they are assessing what needs to be repaired and replaced. | :07:26. | :07:27.
Just one part of this historic city that is counting the cost. | :07:28. | :07:37.
As we heard, ministers have warned of a "very bad situation" | :07:38. | :07:39.
in some areas, as Storm Frank is expected to sweep | :07:40. | :07:42.
across the north-west of England and southern Scotland | :07:43. | :07:44.
later this evening, bringing significant rainfall, | :07:45. | :07:45.
Parts of Wales and Northern Ireland are also likely to be affected. | :07:46. | :07:54.
Our correspondent Robert Hall reports from Croston in Lancashire. | :07:55. | :08:03.
In a farmyard on the outskirts of Croston, there was some good news | :08:04. | :08:10.
this afternoon. The call had gone out for more science to supply the | :08:11. | :08:13.
team of villagers who have been working in shifts to provide | :08:14. | :08:15.
households with some protection against another incoming storm. As | :08:16. | :08:21.
dusk fell, the call was answered, 50 tonnes donated by local companies. | :08:22. | :08:27.
How long has the operation been going on? Since 9am. Do you have any | :08:28. | :08:34.
idea when you are through? No! People will be glad to see you when | :08:35. | :08:41.
you get there. Very much so. The muddy water of the river Yarrow now | :08:42. | :08:46.
closely pollute behind these cottages but the evidence of its | :08:47. | :08:50.
assault on the village lies all along the streets. A chaotic mess of | :08:51. | :08:55.
carpets, furniture and belongings. The Jones family had lit a fire to | :08:56. | :09:00.
bring just a touch of homeliness to their damp front room. They have | :09:01. | :09:04.
coped with two floods. Now they fear Storm Frank may bring a third. If | :09:05. | :09:08.
we're going to be flooded again, it is better than in six months' time | :09:09. | :09:13.
when houses had put back to the shed that they were in beforehand. And so | :09:14. | :09:19.
there is a degree of resignation as to what the next 48 hours might | :09:20. | :09:24.
bring. A few doors down, evidence of the way in which people here are | :09:25. | :09:27.
providing help and comfort when they are most needed. I am from the W I, | :09:28. | :09:33.
this young lady is from the next village, we are all helping each | :09:34. | :09:35.
other. Because Paul wrote Sarah found out today she is not insured. | :09:36. | :09:40.
And there is no shortage of volunteers. The offers of donations | :09:41. | :09:45.
keep coming. There have been donations coming in from all across | :09:46. | :09:48.
the village, the list of people to thank is just endless. We don't want | :09:49. | :09:53.
to miss anyone. It has just been overwhelming. Across the fields, a | :09:54. | :09:57.
chin at helicopter ferried 400 tonnes of sand bags to repair a | :09:58. | :10:02.
breach in local flood defences that before repairs hold, the risk to | :10:03. | :10:05.
Croston may be lessened but in the light of the last few days, no one | :10:06. | :10:11.
is taking anything for granted. This is Croston sports Centre, normally a | :10:12. | :10:14.
social focus for the village forced up since the flood, it has been an | :10:15. | :10:20.
aid centre. Donations around me here to help people dry out their houses. | :10:21. | :10:24.
It has fed hundreds of people, it is providing a space for families to | :10:25. | :10:27.
come to sleep, to bring their families so that they don't have to | :10:28. | :10:31.
remain as long as perhaps they would have two in their flooded homes. If | :10:32. | :10:34.
there is one thing about all this event, despite the suffering and the | :10:35. | :10:41.
loss that is being experienced in this village that people River | :10:42. | :10:43.
member, it is the generosity of those around them. -- that people | :10:44. | :10:53.
will remember. Now the day's other news. | :10:54. | :11:06.
A would-be suicide bomber -- and his wife -- have been found | :11:07. | :11:09.
guilty of planning a terror attack in London earlier this year -- | :11:10. | :11:12.
to coincide with the 10th anniversary -- | :11:13. | :11:14.
Mohammed Rehman -- who called himself the Silent Bomber | :11:15. | :11:17.
-- had stockpiled the chemicals needed to make a bomb -- | :11:18. | :11:19.
Our correspondent Duncan Kennedy has more details. | :11:20. | :11:23.
A back garden in Reading, Mohammed Rehman tests his explosive | :11:24. | :11:25.
The bang was so large it brought neighbours out. | :11:26. | :11:28.
Mohammed Rahman had made his test device with the help of Sana Khan, | :11:29. | :11:31.
the woman he had married in secret and whose salary they used to buy | :11:32. | :11:35.
Mohammed Rehman lived with his parents, who did not | :11:36. | :11:38.
want their faces shown, but told me they had no | :11:39. | :11:40.
idea their son had been involved in a terrorist plot. | :11:41. | :11:43.
When I heard I thought, oh my God, what if he'd done that, | :11:44. | :11:48.
you know, made the mistake and done it somewhere else. | :11:49. | :11:54.
A lot of people would be in danger and lost their lives. | :11:55. | :12:01.
The court heard the prosecution said that he was two days or so away | :12:02. | :12:05.
from having a proper bomb and that could have caused | :12:06. | :12:07.
I'm really grateful to the police that they came in time | :12:08. | :12:15.
and saved our lives and everyone else's lives. | :12:16. | :12:20.
Rehman and Khan bought chemicals and other equipment online. | :12:21. | :12:30.
The pair idolised so-called Islamic State and the 7/7 bombers | :12:31. | :12:33.
On Twitter Mohammed Rehman called himself the Silent Bomber and asked, | :12:34. | :12:40.
"Westfield shopping centre or London Underground? | :12:41. | :12:43.
Any advice would be appreciated greatly." | :12:44. | :12:47.
A hint, say police, of his possible targets. | :12:48. | :12:51.
I still cannot believe that he is my son and he is doing | :12:52. | :12:54.
Police believe Rehman and Khan both wanted to play their part | :12:55. | :13:06.
The couple, who didn't tell their families they had | :13:07. | :13:13.
married, and who also plotted to surprise the world | :13:14. | :13:15.
Duncan Kennedy, BBC News, in Reading. | :13:16. | :13:28.
And 81 New Rd woman who died at a care home yesterday is thought to | :13:29. | :13:32.
have been shot dead by her husband, who is 86 the stop Rita King was | :13:33. | :13:36.
killed at her home. The weapon was recovered from the scene. | :13:37. | :13:42.
Cricket, and England are closing in on victory against South Africa | :13:43. | :13:45.
Needing a record 416 runs to win, the home side ended | :13:46. | :13:49.
Our sports correpondent, Andy Swiss, reports. | :13:50. | :13:56.
Blue skies and bright prospects, England began the day already | :13:57. | :14:00.
with a hefty lead and it soon got heftier. | :14:01. | :14:04.
Joe Root's touch as tantalising as ever. | :14:05. | :14:07.
Root eventually went for 73, soon followed by Ben Stokes. | :14:08. | :14:11.
Jonny Bairstow offering the Durban crowd some festive catching | :14:12. | :14:19.
practice, but as he flexed his muscles, so England | :14:20. | :14:21.
stretched their advantage, setting South Africa a mammoth | :14:22. | :14:23.
They'd need the greatest run chase in their history, | :14:24. | :14:30.
but the unlikely soon seemed unthinkable. | :14:31. | :14:34.
Stokes with a beauty to account for Stiaan van Zyl. | :14:35. | :14:37.
As South Africa seemed to be swishing their way to defeat, | :14:38. | :14:40.
Steve Finn with two quick wickets, including the hosts' first innings | :14:41. | :14:43.
Bairstow missing the most glaring of stumpings, | :14:44. | :14:51.
but just before the close Finn struck again and, | :14:52. | :14:54.
with one day to go, victory is now firmly within their grasp. | :14:55. | :14:57.
Music stars around the world have been paying tribute to Lemmy, | :14:58. | :15:04.
for decades the frontman of heavy rock band Motorhead, | :15:05. | :15:06.
who has died of cancer at the age of 70. | :15:07. | :15:27.
Fast, raucous, loud - that was Motorhead. | :15:28. | :15:28.
Their bassist and singer, Lemmy, every inch the grizzled rock | :15:29. | :15:30.
All very different to one of his first bands, 60s group, | :15:31. | :15:40.
# Chatting up the ladies...# # I, I just took in a ride on a silver | :15:41. | :15:50.
machine...# He went on to join Hawkwind, supplying the vocals | :15:51. | :15:53.
They tried everybody else singing it, except me, | :15:54. | :16:02.
Then they had to ask me to try it because nobody else could do it. | :16:03. | :16:08.
Ejected from Hawkwind, he formed Motorhead. | :16:09. | :16:23.
Decades later, the line-up may have changed, but Lemmy remained | :16:24. | :16:26.
at the helm throughout, still playing to thousands | :16:27. | :16:28.
as recently as this year's Glastonbury. | :16:29. | :16:40.
They may not have been to everyone's taste, | :16:41. | :16:43.
but they're regarded as a key British band. | :16:44. | :16:46.
The style he played his bass guitar was very unique. | :16:47. | :17:03.
You know, it was fast and it was ugly and distorted | :17:04. | :17:05.
and that kind of characterised Motorhead sound, but it also went | :17:06. | :17:08.
on to influence so many different other kind of types of music | :17:09. | :17:11.
For decades he embraced all aspects of excess, drink, drugs. McGreat | :17:12. | :17:27.
balls of fire... # Fellow musicians have been paying | :17:28. | :17:32.
tribute. Ozzy Osbourne described him as a "warrior and legend." | :17:33. | :17:45.
Fans across the globe will also miss a man who was undoubtedly one of | :17:46. | :17:50.
rocks great characters. The tributes to Lemmy Kilmister, | :17:51. | :17:55.
who has died at the age of 70. There's more throughout the evening | :17:56. | :17:59.
on the BBC News Channel. We're back with the late | :18:00. | :18:01.
news at 10.30pm. Now, on BBC One, it's time | :18:02. | :18:03.
for the news where you are. | :18:04. | :18:07. |
