Millions hit the high street

for the Boxing Day Sales amid signs

0:00:050:00:08

growing numbers are choosing to hunt

for bargains online instead.

0:00:080:00:14

But in some cities, the queues

started in the early hours

0:00:140:00:17

of the morning as shoppers went

in search of big discounts.

0:00:170:00:23

I like feeling and carrying what I

have bought. It's like yes, success.

0:00:230:00:30

It's nice to get out, we've had some

lunch.

Try before you buy!

0:00:300:00:39

Also on the programme tonight

a British woman from Hull,

0:00:390:00:41

who took hundreds of painkillers

to Egypt, is jailed.

0:00:410:00:43

33-year-old Laura Plummer has

been sentenced to three

0:00:430:00:45

years for drug smuggling.

0:00:450:00:46

Her family say she's

done nothing wrong.

0:00:460:00:48

A kind gesture, that's all it was.

0:00:480:00:50

How can you be sentenced to three

years just for being kind?

0:00:500:00:58

COMMENTATOR: Harry Kane is the name!

0:00:580:01:00

39 goals in 2017 -

the Tottenham striker sets

0:01:000:01:02

a new record for the most

Premier League goals in a year.

0:01:020:01:05

Good evening.

0:01:200:01:22

Millions of shoppers

across the country have headed

0:01:220:01:24

to the high street today

for the traditional

0:01:240:01:26

Boxing Day sales.

0:01:260:01:28

In some places the queues began

to form outside stores in the early

0:01:280:01:33

hours of the morning,

with research suggesting

0:01:330:01:36

that one in three people

went in search of a bargain today.

0:01:360:01:39

But some retailers have reported

large numbers of people deciding

0:01:390:01:41

to look for bargains

online today instead.

0:01:410:01:45

And analysts say that footfall

in high streets and shopping centres

0:01:450:01:49

across the UK has been

lower than expected.

0:01:490:01:51

Duncan Kennedy is in Southampton.

0:01:510:01:55

It is looking rather quiet tonight,

Duncan.

Yes, it's around about six

0:01:550:02:02

o'clock, things are starting to wind

down but managers in centres like

0:02:020:02:07

this one are saying they had the

high footfall day, in other words

0:02:070:02:14

there are plenty of people coming

into shopping centres like this one

0:02:140:02:18

across the country, but have they

been spending? It is raining here in

0:02:180:02:23

the south and other parts of the

country but we are told that has not

0:02:230:02:26

stopped millions of people coming

out in search of a Boxing Day

0:02:260:02:31

bargains.

0:02:310:02:33

It's been fast, if not furious,

heavy if not heaving.

0:02:330:02:35

But, after all that turkey,

there have been plenty

0:02:350:02:37

of bargains to gobble up.

0:02:370:02:38

Have you got what you wanted?

0:02:380:02:40

Yes.

0:02:400:02:41

It's been successful.

0:02:410:02:42

Successful trip, yeah.

0:02:420:02:43

Here at Southampton's West

Quay Shopping Centre,

0:02:430:02:48

10,000 people an hour surged in.

0:02:480:02:49

What is it about Boxing Day sales?

0:02:490:02:51

Cheaper.

0:02:510:02:52

Half the price.

0:02:520:02:53

Really?

0:02:530:02:54

Yeah, really.

0:02:540:02:55

Some people say there are these

sales all year round.

0:02:550:02:57

To be honest with you,

Black Friday was better

0:02:570:03:00

than actually today.

0:03:000:03:05

And, it's only got the rubbish

what's left, that they've put in.

0:03:050:03:08

But, you are still buying it?

0:03:080:03:10

Yes, only because I got my

Christmas money, yesterday.

0:03:100:03:12

With inflation outstripping many

wages, some experts have been

0:03:120:03:14

predicting a slow Boxing Day,

but in many places, the discounts

0:03:140:03:16

are proving irresistible.

0:03:160:03:18

Well, I think, first

and foremost it's always

0:03:180:03:19

about getting a great bargain.

0:03:190:03:24

And you can see, on the windows

around us, there are stores

0:03:240:03:27

that have got 50%, 60%,

70%, even, discounts

0:03:270:03:31

on some of their products in store.

0:03:310:03:33

So, that is a great

incentive to come out.

0:03:330:03:35

In fact, researchers say that

something like 34% of us will have

0:03:350:03:38

gone shopping today.

0:03:380:03:39

That compares to just 25%

of us last Boxing Day.

0:03:390:03:45

They reckon that overall

we will be spending

0:03:450:03:46

more than £4 billion.

0:03:460:03:48

York was just one of the places

where they queued for the bargains.

0:03:480:03:54

Online shopping, it seems, not yet

the all conquering consumer choice.

0:03:540:04:04

Going on holiday next week,

so I've got some light

0:04:040:04:06

pyjamas, and some trainers.

0:04:060:04:07

Which are £5 and £14.

0:04:070:04:08

Very good, isn't it?

0:04:080:04:09

London's Oxford Street also

brought out the shoppers,

0:04:090:04:13

although some analysts said overall

numbers are down by 4%.

0:04:130:04:20

But many are still

bagging the bargains.

0:04:200:04:21

50% off Prada shoes.

0:04:210:04:23

So, that was actually good.

0:04:230:04:27

That's a £215 saving.

0:04:270:04:28

We do love shopping.

0:04:280:04:29

We like bargains more

than full priced stuff.

0:04:290:04:31

In Glasgow, two arms were not enough

for some to take care of business,

0:04:310:04:35

but whilst many online companies

were reporting sales of more

0:04:350:04:41

than 6% today, for others only

the real deal will do.

0:04:410:04:44

It's a bargain.

0:04:440:04:45

I think I've saved something.

0:04:450:04:49

Official figures for who spent what,

where, and when on Boxing

0:04:490:04:52

Day will come later.

0:04:520:04:53

Unofficially, it seemed

as traditional as ever,

0:04:530:05:00

and for some, it has been a case

of shop till you drop.

0:05:000:05:06

Duncan Kennedy, BBC News.

0:05:060:05:08

A British woman has been sentenced

to three years in an Egyptian prison

0:05:080:05:11

after being found guilty

of smuggling drugs into the country.

0:05:110:05:13

Laura Plummer, who's 33

and from Hull, was arrested

0:05:130:05:16

in October when she was found

carrying almost 300 tablets

0:05:160:05:20

of the painkiller

Tramadol in her suitcase.

0:05:200:05:22

Daniela Relph reports.

0:05:220:05:23

Laura Plummer's family and friends

say she is naive, not a criminal.

0:05:230:05:25

But today the 33-year-old shop

worker from Hull is beginning

0:05:250:05:28

a three-year sentence

in jail in Egypt.

0:05:280:05:31

Her mother, Roberta,

and her Egyptian partner,

0:05:310:05:34

Omar Caboo, have been at court

to support her during

0:05:340:05:36

the hearings this week.

0:05:360:05:39

Laura Plummer had been travelling

to the Red Sea resort of Hurghada

0:05:390:05:42

to visit Omar in October

when she was stopped

0:05:420:05:44

by the authorities.

0:05:440:05:48

In her suitcase were 290 tramadol

tablets, a painkiller which is legal

0:05:480:05:51

on prescription in Britain

but banned in Egypt.

0:05:510:05:56

She said the tablets

were for her partner,

0:05:560:05:58

who suffers from severe back pain,

but she was arrested and has been

0:05:580:06:01

held since then in a communal cell

with up to 25 women.

0:06:010:06:07

Her family at home in Hull

have described today's

0:06:070:06:09

sentence as horrendous.

0:06:090:06:14

She's just a normal

girl who works in Hull.

0:06:140:06:16

She just sells clothes,

she comes home, she watches telly

0:06:160:06:19

and she goes to bed.

0:06:190:06:22

She doesn't drink, she doesn't

smoke, she doesn't do anything.

0:06:220:06:24

She lives to go to Egypt.

0:06:240:06:25

She loves Egypt.

0:06:250:06:26

She loves the Egyptian people.

0:06:260:06:28

She's in love with Omar.

0:06:280:06:29

We cannot believe this

has happened to her.

0:06:290:06:33

We are absolutely devastated.

0:06:330:06:35

Laura Plummer had been

going on holiday to Egypt's Red Sea

0:06:350:06:38

resort for several years but,

for her supporters, she has been let

0:06:380:06:41

down by the country she loved.

0:06:410:06:44

This woman doesn't deserve to be

incarcerated in an Egyptian prison

0:06:440:06:47

and, to be honest with you,

as much as I respect the customs

0:06:470:06:51

of Egypt and the laws

and the judiciary and everything

0:06:510:06:55

else, this will put people off

travelling on holiday

0:06:550:06:58

to Egypt in the future,

and I think the Egyptian authorities

0:06:580:07:00

need to be mindful of that.

0:07:000:07:05

The Egyptian legal

system is complex.

0:07:050:07:07

Laura Plummer will now appeal

against the three-year sentence,

0:07:070:07:09

a jail term her family say

is shocking and unjust.

0:07:090:07:19

Daniela joins us from

the Foreign Office now.

0:07:200:07:23

Daniela, this case centres around

painkillers that are legal here,

0:07:230:07:32

but banned in Egypt.

0:07:320:07:34

Her lawyer says they've lodged

an appeal what chance does she have?

0:07:340:07:38

An appeal can take anything up to a

number of years so the reality is

0:07:380:07:44

any chance of Laura Plummer having

her sentence cut or dismissed looks

0:07:440:07:49

remote at this stage. But it appears

she's had as much help as is

0:07:490:07:52

possible from the Foreign Office

here. Her own local MP has had

0:07:520:07:57

several meetings with the Foreign

Secretary Boris Johnson and said he

0:07:570:08:01

was satisfied that everything was

being done to help Laura Plummer and

0:08:010:08:05

her family. Boris Johnson himself

has made a direct representation on

0:08:050:08:11

her behalf to the Egyptian Prime

Minister but even with all of that

0:08:110:08:14

help it didn't stop her being

sentenced today. This afternoon the

0:08:140:08:16

Foreign Office has issued the most

brief of statements in response to

0:08:160:08:21

her sentencing, in which it says it

will offer continued assistance to

0:08:210:08:25

Laura Plummer and her family, and

its embassy in Egypt is in constant

0:08:250:08:33

contact with the authorities there.

Thank you.

0:08:330:08:37

Academic institutions have been

warned by the government that

0:08:370:08:39

that they must protect freedom

of speech or face possible fines.

0:08:390:08:42

The Universities Minister,

Jo Johnson, said they had a duty

0:08:420:08:44

to ensure students could both hear,

and challenge controversial ideas.

0:08:440:08:47

Some universities and student groups

have banned speakers advocating

0:08:470:08:49

disputed points of view on subjects

including Israel's relations

0:08:490:08:51

with the Palestinians,

the role of the British empire,

0:08:510:08:53

and transgender rights.

0:08:530:08:55

We don't need people to be cosseted.

0:08:550:08:57

We don't need to suppress

debate and stifle debate.

0:08:570:09:01

Debate is how bad ideas

and prejudices get exposed,

0:09:010:09:04

and it's about how knowledge

advances, so it's an absolutely

0:09:040:09:08

vital part of the learning process

that we have full debate,

0:09:080:09:14

that we have freedom of speech

within the law operating

0:09:140:09:16

in our university system.

0:09:160:09:22

Two people have died

following a collision

0:09:220:09:24

between a police car and another

vehicle in Sheffield last night.

0:09:240:09:30

The 46-year-old officer, who died,

was responding to an emergency call

0:09:300:09:33

when his marked car was involved

in the crash.

0:09:330:09:38

A 61-year-old woman -

who was a passenger

0:09:380:09:40

in the other vehicle

- also died.

0:09:400:09:41

Police are appealing for witnesses.

0:09:410:09:43

A Russian cargo ship,

listing near Portsmouth Harbour,

0:09:430:09:45

is being assisted by the Coastguard.

0:09:450:09:47

The vessel is at anchor

in the Solent while a pilot vessel

0:09:470:09:50

assesses its stability and cargo.

0:09:500:09:51

The Coastguard said it had power

and was currently stable.

0:09:510:09:55

The 13 crew on board are reported

to be safe and well.

0:09:550:09:59

There are warnings, though, of gales

and rough seas this evening.

0:09:590:10:07

Cotton spinning was once a key

industry in the north west

0:10:070:10:10

of England and now it has made

a return to the UK.

0:10:100:10:13

A mill in Manchester has become

the only textile factory to spin

0:10:130:10:16

cotton commercially again.

0:10:160:10:17

The process has revived the sector,

connecting businesses

0:10:170:10:19

across the region as they make

clothes using the yarn.

0:10:190:10:23

Judith Moritz has

followed the supply chain

0:10:230:10:26

from start to finish.

0:10:260:10:28

Her report contains

some flashing images.

0:10:280:10:31

Fresh off the boat from California,

cotton has come back

0:10:310:10:33

to its spiritual home.

0:10:330:10:37

Refurbished and reenergised,

this Manchester mill

0:10:370:10:38

is the first in the UK

to spin commercially again.

0:10:380:10:44

For the first time in 50 years,

cotton is in full production.

0:10:440:10:51

It's really reengaged the weavers

and the finishers and the dyers

0:10:510:10:54

to pull together and forge those

chains back again.

0:10:540:10:58

And there is honestly

an enormous appetite

0:10:580:11:00

for provenance and British-made.

0:11:000:11:07

We're following the process

as the cotton spun here

0:11:070:11:10

finds its way from the bale

to the clothes hanger.

0:11:100:11:13

From its raw state to spun yarn.

0:11:130:11:18

I'm now going to take this cotton

from here in Manchester over

0:11:180:11:21

to Blackburn to be dyed.

0:11:210:11:22

That's for you.

0:11:220:11:23

What happens now?

0:11:230:11:25

We are going to take

this into our dye house.

0:11:250:11:27

We're going to load

it onto a dye stand.

0:11:270:11:29

We are going to bleach it,

we're going to dye it

0:11:290:11:32

and we're going to dry it.

0:11:320:11:37

This yarn dyer's used to source

all its cotton overseas.

0:11:370:11:39

Now it only travels 30 miles.

0:11:390:11:42

Turned pink, it's time to take

the yarn up the road

0:11:420:11:44

to Burnley to be woven.

0:11:440:11:46

The resurrection of the cotton

process comes at a good

0:11:460:11:48

time for the industry.

0:11:480:11:53

BBC News and the trade body

Make It British spoke to almost 100

0:11:530:11:56

textile businesses to see

how their 2017 has been.

0:11:560:12:00

30% of them say they're

exporting more British-made

0:12:000:12:02

goods than last year.

0:12:020:12:04

There is concern about

the age of the workforce.

0:12:040:12:07

Two thirds have staff whose

average age is over 40.

0:12:070:12:10

But overall, the news is positive.

0:12:100:12:12

50% of them are turning over

more than a year ago.

0:12:120:12:18

The factory weaving our pink

cloth is a good example.

0:12:180:12:21

Our order book is really healthy.

0:12:210:12:25

So the next six months'

forecast is looking great.

0:12:250:12:28

So much so that we're now having

to put on extra shifts

0:12:280:12:31

and recruit additional staff.

0:12:310:12:34

Here you are, then.

0:12:340:12:36

Back in Manchester, our cloth is now

ready to be made into a shirt.

0:12:360:12:39

Cut.

0:12:390:12:41

Pressed.

0:12:410:12:42

Stitched.

0:12:420:12:45

And finished at this factory.

0:12:450:12:46

One of the few of

its kind to survive.

0:12:460:12:48

I don't think we'll ever see

a return to the halcyon

0:12:480:12:51

days of Cottonopolis.

0:12:510:12:53

However, there is huge opportunities

for businesses and brands

0:12:530:12:56

like ours to create sustainable,

viable and ultimately very

0:12:560:12:58

profitable businesses by making

things here again in the UK

0:12:580:13:02

and selling to an

international market.

0:13:020:13:06

Spun, dyed, woven and stitched,

the cotton process has been sewn

0:13:060:13:09

back together again.

0:13:090:13:11

Our journey behind the seams ends

with a shirt made from local yarn.

0:13:110:13:15

Judith Moritz, BBC News, Manchester.

0:13:150:13:20

It's been a busy day

of Boxing Day sport.

0:13:200:13:24

With all the latest news,

here's Marc Edwards

0:13:240:13:27

at the BBC Sports Centre.

0:13:270:13:31

Hi, Sophie.

0:13:310:13:33

There have been goals galore

in the Premier League,

0:13:330:13:35

none more so than at Wembley

where a Harry Kane hat trick helped

0:13:350:13:38

Tottenham Hotspur

thrash Southampton 5-2.

0:13:380:13:40

It sees the Spurs striker

breaking records both

0:13:400:13:41

at home and across Europe.

0:13:410:13:43

Our sports correspondent

Natalie Pirks was watching.

0:13:430:13:44

Boxing Day is a time when most

struggle to move from our sofas,

0:13:440:13:47

but there was no such Christmas

slump for Harry Kane.

0:13:470:13:52

When Danny Rose was fouled

just outside the box,

0:13:520:13:55

Christian Eriksen's ensuing free

kick landed plumb on Harry's head.

0:13:550:13:58

Here goes Eriksen.

0:13:580:14:02

It's in!

0:14:020:14:03

Alan Shearer's Premier League goals

record had stood for 22 years.

0:14:030:14:05

Kane was engulfed as his

achievements sunk in.

0:14:050:14:09

But the game was yet young,

and there was another

0:14:090:14:11

record for the taking.

0:14:110:14:13

Lionel Messi has scored 54 goals

for club and country this year.

0:14:130:14:17

One more would take Kane to 55.

0:14:170:14:19

And Kane!

0:14:190:14:21

Beautiful from Tottenham.

0:14:210:14:23

Dele to Son to Kane for the tap-in.

0:14:230:14:25

Teamwork makes the dream work.

0:14:250:14:30

Spurs were 4-1 up before Kane put

the cherry on the icing on the cake.

0:14:300:14:33

He was once labelled

a one-season wonder.

0:14:330:14:36

He will!

0:14:360:14:38

Hat-trick, Harry Kane!

0:14:380:14:40

His eighth hat-trick of 2017

tells you otherwise.

0:14:400:14:43

The game was a cracker,

5-2 the final score,

0:14:430:14:46

but one man shone brightest.

0:14:460:14:49

With the World Cup looming,

England fans will be praying Kane's

0:14:490:14:51

world-beating form continues.

0:14:510:14:54

Natalie Pirks, BBC News.

0:14:540:14:57

Elsewhere, plenty of entertainment

in the Premier League.

0:14:570:14:59

There was a six-goal thriller

at the Vitality Stadium,

0:14:590:15:02

with Bournemouth three times coming

from behind to draw with West Ham.

0:15:020:15:05

Manchester United rescued

a point in the 90th

0:15:050:15:07

minute against Burnley.

0:15:070:15:08

There were wins for Chelsea

and Watford as well.

0:15:080:15:09

Celtic moved 11 points clear at

the top of the Scottish Premiership

0:15:140:15:17

with a 2-0 victory over Dundee

at Dens Park.

0:15:170:15:19

James Forrest opened the scoring

before Leigh Griffiths

0:15:190:15:21

added Celtic's second

just before half-time.

0:15:210:15:23

It was the only Scottish Premiership

game today, with five

0:15:230:15:25

more to come tomorrow.

0:15:250:15:29

England's cricketers have had

a tough time in the field on day one

0:15:290:15:32

of the fourth Ashes Test.

0:15:320:15:34

A century from David Warner

and another great performance

0:15:340:15:36

from captain Steve Smith left

Australia on 244-3

0:15:360:15:38

at the close of play.

0:15:380:15:39

Patrick Gearey reports

from Melbourne.

0:15:390:15:42

No wonder they couldn't

wait to get in.

0:15:420:15:45

Australia's festive season began

with their series victory last week.

0:15:450:15:48

Ashes Monday.

0:15:480:15:50

In fact, in what seems an age

since England first landed,

0:15:500:15:53

the only thing they haven't lost

is the toss.

0:15:530:15:55

At the worst moment,

that deserted them, too.

0:15:550:15:58

So Australia batted,

of course they did.

0:15:580:16:00

This was a gift

certificate of a pitch.

0:16:000:16:02

Happy Christmas, David Warner.

0:16:020:16:04

50 runs at England's expense,

100 for the Aussies by lunch.

0:16:040:16:07

Ouch.

0:16:070:16:10

At the other end, Cameron Bancroft

had only been marginally more

0:16:100:16:12

involved than the spectators.

0:16:120:16:13

Out of sorts, out for 26.

0:16:130:16:15

A wicket, finally.

0:16:150:16:16

The rambunctious Warner grew edgy

as he neared his century.

0:16:160:16:19

On 99, he blinked.

0:16:190:16:22

There, Tom Curran's first Test

wicket, what a moment.

0:16:220:16:24

But just a moment.

0:16:240:16:26

Look at the replay.

0:16:260:16:27

No ball, not out.

0:16:270:16:31

A misstep to sum up a series.

0:16:310:16:32

Back came Warner.

0:16:320:16:34

Next ball, no mistake.

0:16:340:16:35

A 100, and the boundless

joy of a reprieved man.

0:16:350:16:37

His second life was short, though.

0:16:370:16:39

When James Anderson got him,

there was no escape.

0:16:390:16:42

England battled back.

0:16:420:16:44

Stuart Broad as much as anyone.

0:16:440:16:46

He'd gone 414 balls without a wicket

before he removed Usman Khawaja.

0:16:460:16:50

Broad's blood up.

0:16:500:16:52

Was this Shaun Marsh out next ball?

0:16:520:16:54

The umpire said no.

0:16:540:16:55

The technology upheld that.

0:16:550:16:56

Crucial.

0:16:560:16:57

Small margins can mean hard yards.

0:16:570:17:00

In one of cricket's great venues,

one of the great modern batsmen.

0:17:000:17:03

Steve Smith rolled ominously on,

unbeaten, perhaps unbeatable.

0:17:030:17:07

But had the cricket

matched the occasion?

0:17:070:17:17

We did our best.

0:17:170:17:18

We didn't bowl a great

first session.

0:17:180:17:20

We didn't add to that excitement,

unless you're a David Warner fan.

0:17:200:17:22

But second session, we did

all we could on that pitch.

0:17:220:17:25

It's certainly been a very

slow pace at the MCG.

0:17:250:17:28

It's the kind of match

which might be decided not

0:17:280:17:30

by magic, but by mistakes.

0:17:300:17:31

And so far in this series,

unfortunately for England,

0:17:310:17:33

they've made too many of them.

0:17:330:17:35

Patrick Geary, BBC

News, in Melbourne.

0:17:350:17:36

Might Bite, trained

by Nicky Henderson,

0:17:360:17:38

held on in an exciting finish

to win the King George VI Chase

0:17:380:17:41

at Kempton Park.

0:17:410:17:42

Nico de Boinville's mount led

from the front throughout.

0:17:420:17:44

The 6-4 favourite had to work hard

to stay ahead of 50-1
