Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Donna Traynor and Noel | :00:13. | :00:18.
Thompson. The headlines this Tuesday evening: | :00:18. | :00:21.
Admissions stopped in a ward at the Ulster Hospital because of a | :00:21. | :00:31.
vomitting and diarrhoea outbreak - I'm live with the details. | :00:31. | :00:35.
Tuberculosis at a second hospital - health checks are but after a | :00:35. | :00:38.
member of staff and a patient are infected. | :00:38. | :00:42.
This is the first time I have ever seen a case where a member of staff | :00:42. | :00:45.
has been affected with TB from a patient. | :00:45. | :00:50.
Police question two men about the murder of a man in a hit and run. | :00:50. | :00:56.
Ireland's leading public and adds another 15 parties because. | :00:56. | :01:03.
The fans out in force at the top and golf champion -- as the Open | :01:03. | :01:06.
golf champion parades is tricky. And after another day of depressed | :01:06. | :01:10.
temperatures you may be wondering if its time to pack away the summer | :01:10. | :01:12.
clothes. I'll have all the weather details. | :01:12. | :01:15.
First to those health scares. The Ulster Hospital in Dundonald has | :01:15. | :01:18.
closed a ward to admissions because of an outbreak of vomiting and | :01:18. | :01:23.
diarrhoea. And two, possibly three cases of tuberculosis are being | :01:23. | :01:28.
investigated at the City Hospital in Belfast. The Norovirus is in | :01:28. | :01:33.
four wards at the Ulster. About 50 patients and staff are affected. | :01:33. | :01:36.
The South Eastern Trust, which runs the hospital, is also reviewing a | :01:36. | :01:40.
small number of cases involving the C diff bacteria. Our reporter | :01:40. | :01:46.
Alexandra MacKenzie is at the Ulster. | :01:46. | :01:52.
What has been happening today? The hospital here is dealing with | :01:52. | :01:55.
two different issues. They are dealing with the vomiting and | :01:55. | :02:00.
diarrhoea bark. We understand that around 50 people have been affected | :02:00. | :02:04.
by this. That his staff and patients. Four wards have been | :02:05. | :02:09.
affected. One of them is still closed. On the other hand, they are | :02:09. | :02:14.
dealing with a small number of cases of CD for seal, seven in | :02:14. | :02:23.
total. The main concern is that one person who is suffering from the | :02:23. | :02:28.
strain 0.27, which has a particularly nasty strain. It | :02:28. | :02:32.
releases a higher number of toxins into your system and is resistant | :02:32. | :02:35.
to antibiotics. So what has the trust had to say | :02:35. | :02:39.
today? What the trust is saying that they | :02:39. | :02:45.
are really dealing with cleanliness here. There is a prolonged decline | :02:45. | :02:52.
on going. But they are asking people to be vigilant. -- prolonged | :02:52. | :02:59.
deep clean. In terms of the bacteria situation, they are | :02:59. | :03:02.
concerned that people will be thinking back to a couple of years | :03:02. | :03:07.
ago when there was a situation in Northern Ireland when there were a | :03:07. | :03:12.
number of death -- deaths. They want people to understand that this | :03:12. | :03:21.
situation is different. The reassurance I want to give them | :03:21. | :03:26.
is that in the previous situation, it would have taken months to | :03:26. | :03:31.
identify the particular strains in the hospital. In our situation here, | :03:31. | :03:37.
with our equipment, we can detect these strains on the day of their | :03:37. | :03:41.
diagnosis. That has a greater control over the infection. It | :03:41. | :03:44.
allows us to put in place the cleaning measures almost | :03:44. | :03:48.
immediately. And confident that we're not going to get in the | :03:48. | :03:52.
situation that we had in the Northern Trust four years ago. | :03:52. | :03:57.
People still want to know if they can visit. | :03:57. | :04:02.
People are indeed still allowed to visit the hospital. But the trust | :04:02. | :04:06.
is saying to take extra precautions. Make sure that you wash your hands. | :04:06. | :04:09.
And when you are in a ward, make sure there's not too many people | :04:09. | :04:16.
around a bed. Don't sit on the beds. Children should be supervised. The | :04:16. | :04:20.
trust is also advising that young children and babies should not be | :04:20. | :04:24.
taken to the hospital. There's another hospital under | :04:24. | :04:29.
pressure today. That is right. I was at the Belfast | :04:29. | :04:34.
City Hospital earlier this morning and they have been dealing with two | :04:34. | :04:39.
confirmed cases of TB. One of them was confirmed back in February. But | :04:40. | :04:45.
a couple of weeks ago, they confirmed another case, which was | :04:45. | :04:50.
linked to that case in February. That was a member of staff that | :04:50. | :04:56.
contracted TB from a patient. Letters have gone out to around 43 | :04:56. | :05:00.
people who are invited to come back to the hospital. They were patients | :05:00. | :05:05.
in the hospital around February. They have been invited back for | :05:05. | :05:09.
screening. Tuberculosis cells under the | :05:09. | :05:15.
microscope. A disease which affects the lungs. For those who contract | :05:15. | :05:22.
it, it is serious but curable. The symptoms include coughing, chest | :05:23. | :05:29.
pains, weight loss and sweating. In Belfast, a patient in his 70s was | :05:29. | :05:33.
diagnosed with TB in February. Earlier this month, a member of | :05:33. | :05:38.
staff on the same ward was diagnosed with the same strain. | :05:38. | :05:41.
Belfast Health Trust says she is recovering. | :05:41. | :05:45.
In nearly 30 years of practice, this is the first time I have seen | :05:45. | :05:48.
a case where a member of staff has been affected with TB from a | :05:48. | :05:53.
patient. I have seen a situation where a member of staff has come | :05:53. | :05:57.
back from working in Africa or a third world country. But this is | :05:57. | :06:02.
not a situation I would have come across before. The public should be | :06:02. | :06:08.
assured that we are dealing with something very unusual. | :06:08. | :06:13.
The number of people admitted to hospital in Northern Ireland and | :06:13. | :06:21.
diagnosed with TB has fallen in the last decade. In the year 2,000-2001, | :06:21. | :06:28.
102 people contracted TB. In 2009- 2010, 72 people were diagnosed with | :06:28. | :06:32.
the disease, lower than for the rest of the UK. | :06:32. | :06:36.
Some screenings have already taken place. A third possible case of TB | :06:36. | :06:44.
has been discovered. It has no proven link to the other two cases. | :06:44. | :06:50.
The message from the trust tonight is not to panic. Indeed, it is | :06:50. | :06:53.
difficult for TBT be transmitted and you would have to have | :06:53. | :07:03.
:07:03. | :07:04. | ||
prolonged contact with somebody who is infected. | :07:04. | :07:07.
Detectives investigating the murder of a man in a deliberate hit and | :07:07. | :07:10.
run have made an arrest. Declan Quinn from Coalisland died from his | :07:10. | :07:13.
injuries last night. He was knocked down in the town last Saturday. Our | :07:13. | :07:16.
district journalist Louise Cullen has the latest on the investigation. | :07:16. | :07:20.
A murdered man remembered. The Pope -- UK's mark the spot where Declan | :07:20. | :07:27.
Quinn was hit by car. He was treated in hospital but he died | :07:27. | :07:34.
from his injuries last night. This close-knit community on the | :07:34. | :07:38.
outskirts of the island have been shocked. | :07:38. | :07:42.
I would like to offer my condolences to the family. It is an | :07:42. | :07:47.
awful thing that has happened. I hope they are coping as best as | :07:47. | :07:52.
they can in the situation. I would like to just urge anybody with any | :07:52. | :07:57.
information to report it. The silver coarser that hit Declan | :07:57. | :08:04.
Quinn was found yesterday. The road there was still cordoned off today. | :08:04. | :08:08.
The police say they are following all lines of investigation in what | :08:08. | :08:12.
is now a murder inquiry. A 20 yard man was arrested | :08:12. | :08:16.
yesterday and his being held on suspicion of withholding | :08:16. | :08:21.
information. Today, a 21-year-old man was also arrested. | :08:21. | :08:24.
It is understood the victim lived locally and was well-known in the | :08:24. | :08:30.
area. His parents and family are now preparing for his funeral. | :08:30. | :08:33.
And a short time ago the police said the 20-year-old man questioned | :08:33. | :08:35.
about helping offenders and withholding information has been | :08:35. | :08:39.
released on bail. The hotelier Bill Wolsey has bought | :08:39. | :08:42.
a chain of bars and a hotel for 8 million. Mr Wolsey, who already | :08:42. | :08:45.
owns the Merchant Hotel in Belfast, bought the 15 premises out of | :08:45. | :08:48.
administration. It's a difficult time for the pub industry, as our | :08:48. | :08:57.
business and economics editor Jim Fitzpatrick reports. | :08:57. | :09:01.
Is the glass half-full or half- empty? Like life, when it comes to | :09:01. | :09:06.
the pub business in Northern Ireland, it depends who you talk to. | :09:06. | :09:10.
The industry at the moment is very simply on its knees. We are losing | :09:10. | :09:16.
a PUP pay day. Some way in the region of 300 pubs are in | :09:16. | :09:20.
difficulty. We can expect to lose another 100 this year. When you | :09:20. | :09:23.
start from a base of 1,400, that is a big part of the industry and a | :09:23. | :09:27.
lot of jobs. But not everybody is complaining. | :09:27. | :09:32.
In this recession, cash is king. If you have access to finance, there | :09:32. | :09:36.
are bargains to be had. The owner of this institution has | :09:36. | :09:39.
just bought 15 pubs out of administration. It cost the | :09:39. | :09:44.
previous owners 24 million to build the chain. But the new owner | :09:44. | :09:49.
paid just eight and it confirms him as Northern Ireland's leading | :09:49. | :09:54.
publican. These were always good pubs. We | :09:54. | :09:57.
felt that they had been in the doldrums for a number of years. We | :09:57. | :10:01.
have been in this business a long time and thought that hour | :10:02. | :10:10.
expertise added to the good pubs. And cash, of course, is king at the | :10:10. | :10:15.
moment. Business people may find it difficult to keep liquid. How is it | :10:15. | :10:21.
that you are managing to do that? Our existing pubs are trading | :10:21. | :10:27.
profitably. On this expansion, where we have taken on the 15 pubs, | :10:27. | :10:33.
the Bank of Scotland, the deal but we did with then enable us to keep | :10:33. | :10:37.
some cash in the pubs. The latest pubs of the survey | :10:37. | :10:41.
revealed that a third of them cut staff last year and two-thirds cut | :10:41. | :10:51.
:10:51. | :10:58. | ||
staff hours, with 300 forced sales Changes are also being made in the | :10:58. | :11:01.
armed forces that are expected to affect civilian workers employed in | :11:01. | :11:03.
bases here. The 19 Light Brigade, which has its headquarters in | :11:03. | :11:06.
County Down, is being disbanded, and its 2,000 soldiers will be | :11:06. | :11:08.
redeployed to other units. The Brigade's regiments include 2 | :11:08. | :11:11.
Rifles, based at Ballykinlar, and 2 Mercian, based in Holywood. A | :11:11. | :11:14.
spokesman said there was likely to be an impact on civilian staff but | :11:14. | :11:18.
it was too early to know what, and that trade unions would be | :11:18. | :11:21.
consulted. You're watching BBC Newsline. Still | :11:21. | :11:29.

the Department of Culture and Leisure has re-stocked a County | :11:52. | :11:55.
Down lake with fish when the water is polluted with thick algae. | :11:55. | :11:58.
Loughbrickland Lake has been choked with the weed since Easter, but | :11:58. | :12:01.
earlier this month it was re- stocked with 500 trout. Last week, | :12:01. | :12:05.
local people photographed dead fish in the water. Julia Paul reports. | :12:05. | :12:08.
This lake attracts anglers from across Northern Ireland. It is also | :12:08. | :12:13.
a popular beauty spot for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. But since | :12:13. | :12:18.
the spring it has been becoming less and less attractive. | :12:18. | :12:24.
I have been living here for 30 years. This is the worst that I had | :12:24. | :12:29.
seen it. It is affecting the wildlife. More hens can't get out. | :12:29. | :12:34.
They are struggling to get out. Then last week we had dead fish | :12:34. | :12:38.
appearing on top of the water. Andy took these photographs last | :12:38. | :12:42.
week. It is thought the fish died because they were starved of oxygen. | :12:42. | :12:46.
Despite that, two weeks ago the Department of Culture and leisure | :12:46. | :12:52.
stock the lake -- stopped the lake again with drought. | :12:52. | :12:56.
Normally we would welcome that, but on the other hand, the lake has not | :12:56. | :13:03.
been cleared of the algae. I am concerned that taxpayers' money has | :13:03. | :13:09.
been misspent. Normally the lake is kept here | :13:09. | :13:12.
using this harvester. But people say it has been broken for six | :13:12. | :13:16.
months. In a statement, the Department said that since the fish | :13:16. | :13:22.
were released, the algae levels on the lake had increased | :13:22. | :13:26.
significantly. The numbers of fish killed was more, though. The | :13:26. | :13:34.
Department and start to remove the week tomorrow. -- was small, though. | :13:34. | :13:44.

outrage, after it emerged that Michael had earlier been convicted | :15:17. | :15:23.
of indecent assault at the same school, in 1985 and 1986. He was | :15:23. | :15:31.

Jeffrey Donaldson in the House of Commons. He specifically refer to | :17:02. | :17:08.
that in his evidence today. Yes, and to put this into context, who | :17:08. | :17:14.
is Owen Corrigan? He is a former Garda sergeant. He was it based at | :17:14. | :17:19.

referred to Owen Corrigan as being a Garda officer. Today, Owen | :17:33. | :17:37.
Corrigan said that was the first time anyone had ever took her to | :17:37. | :17:42.

Two pieces of public art worth nearly 100,000 had been vandalised. | :19:22. | :19:26.
Our district journalist has this story. | :19:26. | :19:34.
At a cost of nearly 50,000, the now extinct elk returns to a | :19:34. | :19:42.
roundabout. These three men and a dog but from a short story. And | :19:42. | :19:48.

headlines for the wrong reasons. This is called on the way to be | :20:06. | :20:14.
fair, and stands on a roundabout. The two cost nearly 50,000, and | :20:14. | :20:19.
depicts a farmer picking his car to market. Within days, a sash was | :20:19. | :20:25.
painted around his neck. The Heritage Trust put it up, and says | :20:25. | :20:28.
it is in contact with local community representatives to try | :20:28. | :20:32.
and get the paint removed. Somebody obviously have a sense of humour. | :20:32. | :20:39.
They put a sash on the farmer. That is part of the way that we | :20:40. | :20:44.
celebrate our holiday period. The problem is, this will still be here | :20:44. | :20:49.
once all the flats have been removed. In the last few days, the | :20:49. | :20:55.
elk has been vandalised as well. One council has condemned the | :20:55. | :21:01.
damage and says it is making plans to remove the paint, paid for at a | :21:01. | :21:11.

homecoming to remember. The new Open champion is back home after a | :21:18. | :21:22.
whirlwind 48 hours, and their is no sign of the frenzy around him | :21:22. | :21:27.
letting up to date. Darren's youngest son has not let | :21:27. | :21:35.
the job out of his grasp. He woke up with the trophy on his pillow | :21:35. | :21:41.
this morning. A dream for the plaque boys, and the Open champion | :21:41. | :21:51.
:21:51. | :21:52. | ||
had the big day ahead. Portrush was swamped by the media, or tried to | :21:52. | :21:56.
get a piece of Darren. But before anything, he wanted to give | :21:56. | :22:04.
something back. One of the perks of winning the Open is that they give | :22:04. | :22:10.
you a gold medal. For those of you have not been here before, they are | :22:10. | :22:18.
a couple of Cabinet on the way up the stairs. I want this one to go | :22:18. | :22:26.
up by the 1947 medal. Darren gave it to me very quietly in the | :22:26. | :22:29.
council room before the press conference. He did not want to make | :22:29. | :22:35.
a fuss about it, which in itself said something. I said there is no | :22:35. | :22:39.
way we can accept a gift like this without doing it publicly, and ask | :22:39. | :22:46.
being able to acknowledge it. It is a great measure of Darren Clarke. | :22:46. | :22:52.
He wanted to present it to the club. Fred Daly is a micron and is part | :22:52. | :23:02.
:23:02. | :23:11. | ||
of the world, but I wonder if he received a reception like this? A | :23:11. | :23:16.
quiet walk about on the first fairway turned into a scrum of fans | :23:16. | :23:26.
:23:26. | :23:29. | ||
and friends. It is quite crazy today. But it is wonderful for so | :23:29. | :23:36.
many people did turn up and see me. It is fantastic. Finally starting | :23:36. | :23:46.
:23:46. | :23:47. | ||
to sink in a little bit. For those people, what would it mean to see | :23:47. | :23:55.
Darren playing a major tournament in Portrush? | :23:55. | :24:02.
Following his defeat at the hands of Amir Khan, Paul McCloskey has | :24:02. | :24:10.
promised it would next fight at home. | :24:11. | :24:16.
When Paul McCloskey he walked into the arena this lunchtime, he did so | :24:16. | :24:22.
determined to exercise the ghost of Manchester. That spring night, a | :24:22. | :24:30.
clash cost him his unblemished record and the world title. I am | :24:30. | :24:38.
head at the press conference. We will go one better, we will be the | :24:38. | :24:44.
boy that be me. It is a tough fight. It could yet be a bumper evening | :24:44. | :24:53.
for Belfast fight fans as well. They have offered us the fight. | :24:53. | :24:58.
There is no reason why it would not happen. What we need you to have | :24:58. | :25:05.
that on a backyard? It means so much. It would give me an extra we | :25:05. | :25:10.
boost. It not be an easy fight. With 10,000 fans shouting behind | :25:10. | :25:20.
you, it will help. The bout is not yet a done deal. An announcement is | :25:20. | :25:30.
:25:30. | :25:31. | ||
The Rangers striker needs to undergo a hernia operation and will | :25:31. | :25:37.
miss the first month of the new football season. Stephen Craigan | :25:37. | :25:40.
has announced his retirement from international football. The | :25:40. | :25:44.
Motherwell defender has amassed 54 caps for Northern Ireland. | :25:44. | :25:46.
Finally, Linfield are currently playing the second leg of their | :25:46. | :25:50.
Champions League qualifier against Bartay Borisov. 1-1l after the | :25:50. | :25:53.
first leg. The score in the second leg in Belarus is Bartay 0, | :25:53. | :26:03.
:26:03. | :26:10. | ||
Linfield 0. That's 1-1 on aggregate There was not much sign of summer | :26:10. | :26:15.
again. Temperatures below the average. There is hope, though. | :26:15. | :26:21.
Things will get a warmer and sunnier later in the week. The wind | :26:21. | :26:26.
has been a feature of the weather today. It has dragged a lot of | :26:26. | :26:34.
cloud in. Things are starting to dry up and brighten up. As the wind | :26:34. | :26:40.
continues to ease, the showers will be courted at the north coast. Most | :26:40. | :26:47.
places ending up dry. Tomorrow, we are stuck with this cool weather. | :26:47. | :26:52.
There will also be dampness around. Many western areas will have a | :26:52. | :26:55.
better day than today. Some sunshine developing here and there. | :26:55. | :27:01.
A couple of showers around as well, but not too many. Towards lunchtime, | :27:01. | :27:08.
thicker cloud will start to edge into eastern areas. That will bring | :27:08. | :27:13.
bits of nuisance rain. Temperatures: 15-16 degrees. The | :27:13. | :27:19.
brighter skies will be over the West tomorrow. There were also be | :27:19. | :27:24.
less wind than today. By the evening, that cloudy, damp weather | :27:24. | :27:29.
it moves away from the East. Things are looking brighter, sunnier and | :27:29. | :27:38.
less breezy. If you are on your holidays, it is still pretty chilly. | :27:38. | :27:41.
But things are warming up as we head through the rest of the week. | :27:42. | :27:45.
Still the risk of a shower. Temperatures getting back up to | :27:45. | :27:50. |
