Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Mark Carruthers and Donna | :00:14. | :00:24.
:00:24. | :00:26. | ||
Traynor. The headlines. The Facebook Page set to be putting | :00:26. | :00:29.
it the likes of police officers at risk. | :00:29. | :00:33.
A 68-year-old man appears in court charged with having guns and | :00:33. | :00:36.
explosives. A major hotel development gets a | :00:37. | :00:42.
new lease of life. Either Glens of Antrim been | :00:42. | :00:48.
overlooked as a tourist destination? People had been drawn | :00:48. | :00:57.
here by the promise of good music and good food. | :00:57. | :01:00.
As the British Transplant Games get under way, we are live at the | :01:00. | :01:03.
opening ceremony in Belfast. You may have dodged today's | :01:03. | :01:05.
downpours but you will not have escaped the humidity - fresher | :01:05. | :01:12.
weather coming our way. A Republican site on Facebook has | :01:12. | :01:15.
been shut down after it was criticised for putting police | :01:15. | :01:21.
officers' lives at risk. It called for people to post pictures of | :01:21. | :01:23.
members of the police and details of security operations. | :01:23. | :01:25.
The organisation that represents rank and file officers says | :01:26. | :01:35.
:01:36. | :01:38. | ||
publishing pictures was an attempt to target its members for murder. | :01:38. | :01:42.
It was called Crown Forces Watch - and that is precisely what this | :01:42. | :01:48.
Facebook Page aim to do. It was set up and the last couple of months | :01:48. | :01:52.
and had 300 members. Is said it wanted to keep people up to date on | :01:52. | :01:57.
what it described as harassment by security forces. It asked members | :01:57. | :02:02.
to a post information about police and soldiers which made others | :02:02. | :02:06.
demand to have it closed down. People may have a problem with | :02:06. | :02:11.
police but there are many ways you can deal with that. There are | :02:11. | :02:14.
political and independent members of the police board to them you can | :02:14. | :02:21.
bring complaints. This was a nonsense from the start. It was the | :02:21. | :02:25.
potential to provide information to terrorist groups. A short time | :02:25. | :02:29.
after cost to close down the site, that is what happened. The group | :02:29. | :02:34.
itself close it down St bad publicity. Crown Forces Watch | :02:34. | :02:39.
claims its aim was to reports harassment only, not to endanger | :02:39. | :02:45.
life. I think they need to answer the question - why would the Sikh | :02:45. | :02:50.
members of the public to supply them with information about the | :02:50. | :02:56.
movements of police officers, the details of police operations | :02:56. | :02:58.
towards the terrorist activities and why would the as members of the | :02:58. | :03:04.
public to send photographs of police officers? I am very clear, | :03:04. | :03:09.
and it is my view as a police officer, it was for malevolent | :03:09. | :03:14.
intent. The Police Federation says the administrators should be | :03:14. | :03:18.
arrested and brought to justice and the legislation needs to be put in | :03:18. | :03:22.
place to discourage others from doing something similar. | :03:22. | :03:25.
A West Belfast man has been in court charged with having guns and | :03:26. | :03:28.
explosives. The 68 year-old from Suffolk Drive was arrested by | :03:28. | :03:37.
police investigating dissident republican activity. Thomas Maguire | :03:37. | :03:43.
is charged with having four handguns, 100 rounds of ammunition | :03:43. | :03:51.
and explosives. Belfast magistrates court heard that police found this | :03:51. | :03:56.
in Thomas Maguire's car, when he was arrested in West Belfast on | :03:56. | :04:01.
Tuesday. He faces another charge of having guns with the intent to | :04:01. | :04:06.
endanger life. The court heard this related to a security operation | :04:06. | :04:10.
last year. Police discovered what they described as a small fire arms | :04:10. | :04:15.
factory. The Prussia -- the prosecution claims his fingerprints | :04:15. | :04:22.
were found on a pistol. A barn late Thomas Maguire has 12 convictions | :04:22. | :04:27.
dating back to the 1970s minus ten of them are related to explosives. | :04:27. | :04:31.
A prosecution says there is a risk that the accused would reoffend | :04:31. | :04:38.
efforts failed. -- a prosecution lawyer. The defence lawyer argued | :04:39. | :04:42.
for bail, saying that Thomas Maguire suffered from serious | :04:42. | :04:48.
health problems. The district judge said there was a strong risk of | :04:48. | :04:52.
reoffending and he said that if that happened, the consequences | :04:52. | :04:57.
could be very serious indeed. He demanded the queues in custody for | :04:57. | :05:02.
a four weeks. As he was led away from the dock, Thomas Maguire blew | :05:02. | :05:06.
a kiss to his friends and relatives in the public gallery. | :05:06. | :05:09.
News organisations including the BBC have been ordered by a judge to | :05:09. | :05:12.
hand over all unbroadcast pictures of last month's rioting in Belfast. | :05:12. | :05:14.
Lawyers for broadcasters had opposed the PSNI application | :05:14. | :05:17.
because of fears it could heighten the risk to the safety of camera | :05:17. | :05:26.
crews and reporters. The BBC said it was disappointed by the ruling. | :05:26. | :05:29.
Plans for two new hotels in Belfast could be revived - a matter of | :05:30. | :05:33.
months after the initial project seemed to have been shelved. The | :05:33. | :05:36.
Jermon Property Group had been going to build the hotels on a site | :05:36. | :05:40.
known as South Bank Plaza. Now another group is planning to take | :05:40. | :05:50.
:05:50. | :05:51. | ||
the project on. Our reporter was there. There might someday be 150 | :05:51. | :05:57.
hotel bedrooms on offer right here - this Belfast site runs between | :05:57. | :06:04.
Victoria Street and Dublin Road. Plans were well develop -- advance | :06:04. | :06:12.
for work hotels. The name for the whole site was to be south bank | :06:12. | :06:19.
Lazard or South Bank Square. Then the recession made its mark. The | :06:19. | :06:22.
group went into administration and planning applications were | :06:22. | :06:26.
withdrawn. The whole project seemed to be finished. But now there is a | :06:27. | :06:33.
new owner and a new plan. It is understood the Republican's | :06:34. | :06:37.
nationalists management administration agency over stop the | :06:37. | :06:44.
sale of their site to South Bank's square limited. Its director has | :06:44. | :06:49.
signed a contract with them Mattel Group with a view to building the | :06:49. | :06:53.
tour tells on the site. A new application has been lodged with | :06:53. | :06:58.
the planning service to build a hotel right here which would front | :06:58. | :07:04.
on to Dublin Road and have 146 bedrooms. A further application | :07:04. | :07:10.
will fall for the next to tell. This will be the site where this | :07:10. | :07:15.
tower block currently stands. You do not have to try too hard to find | :07:15. | :07:21.
sites in Belfast for projects which came to nothing. This was to have | :07:21. | :07:25.
been the tallest building in Ireland. This revived project does | :07:25. | :07:29.
indicate that some companies are still looking for ways to build for | :07:30. | :07:35.
the future. That could mean more jobs. | :07:36. | :07:41.
Later in the programme we will find out why hospitality business -- | :07:41. | :07:44.
hospitality businesses in the Glens of Antrim feel they're being left | :07:44. | :07:48.
out by the tourist board. The tourist trade makes up about | :07:48. | :07:50.
five per cent of Northern Ireland's business and while efforts are | :07:50. | :07:53.
being made to increase that, today we have had a pessimistic | :07:53. | :07:56.
assessment that our economy, as a whole, faces an increasing risk of | :07:56. | :07:59.
slipping back into recession. The Northern Bank says growth here | :07:59. | :08:02.
continues to lag behind the UK average. Our business and economics | :08:02. | :08:12.
:08:12. | :08:13. | ||
editor is with me. We did think the recession was over, so is that | :08:14. | :08:19.
going to change? The recession is over but, like every horror movie, | :08:19. | :08:25.
there is always a sequel, it is a question of when. The Northern Bank | :08:25. | :08:29.
is saying that the likelihood is that it will come sooner rather | :08:29. | :08:33.
than later. There is a one-in-five chance of going back into recession. | :08:33. | :08:39.
We are seeing some growth. A bit less than the UK average. That | :08:39. | :08:43.
growth is so fragile that any big shock could send us back into | :08:43. | :08:47.
recession. Unfortunately, today we're saying tremors in the | :08:48. | :08:52.
international markets. 15 billion went off the value of such shares | :08:52. | :08:57.
in London today. Just the sort of thing we do not want if we want to | :08:57. | :09:01.
avoid recession. There are businesses working away in Northern | :09:01. | :09:05.
Ireland, Even if the margins are tight, what needs to be done to | :09:05. | :09:10.
boost the economy on words? sector looks out words and sells | :09:11. | :09:16.
out towards - that is manufacturing and food production and it is doing | :09:16. | :09:21.
well. The other sector is the one which looks to consumers here which | :09:21. | :09:26.
does not do so well. We need to ensure that our manufacturing | :09:26. | :09:31.
experts continue to do well and that our and some economy, like | :09:31. | :09:36.
lawyers and retailers, picks up. If we had the answer to that, we would | :09:36. | :09:44.
be rich. Is there anything that our politicians can do to help? Local | :09:44. | :09:49.
taxation is simply rates. Previously they froze the rates and | :09:49. | :09:53.
now they can do that again to boost consumer demand. This is something | :09:53. | :09:59.
really for the Bank of England which has kept interest rates at | :09:59. | :10:02.
have a percent. It is something for the Chancellor and international | :10:02. | :10:07.
politicians as well. -- half a percent. | :10:07. | :10:09.
Social services in Dungannon have intervened to protect four children | :10:09. | :10:12.
were left at home when their parents went on holiday. The eldest | :10:12. | :10:16.
child is 14 and the youngest five. It is understood that children are | :10:16. | :10:19.
now staying with relatives. The head of the NSPCC in Northern | :10:19. | :10:22.
Ireland says there is no excuse for leaving children so young to go on | :10:22. | :10:28.
holiday. We are not at all saying that | :10:28. | :10:32.
parents need to be feeling like criminals were leaving children for | :10:32. | :10:37.
a short period time but clearly, the length of time involved here, | :10:37. | :10:41.
risk can be generated and something could go wrong. | :10:42. | :10:48.
You're watching BBC Newsline. Still to come on the story -- on the | :10:48. | :10:52.
programme - at touch of Baywatch for a beaches. | :10:52. | :10:58.
The Northern Ireland connection to the 1936 Olympic Games. | :10:59. | :11:01.
The Northern Ireland Tourist Board says it is trying to double the | :11:01. | :11:06.
number of visitors here, more than 3 million sampled our hospitality | :11:06. | :11:09.
last year with the Giant's Causeway seen as the big highlight. Some | :11:09. | :11:13.
tourism businesses in the Glens of Antrim feel they're not getting | :11:13. | :11:18.
their fair share of the publicity push. They are doing their | :11:18. | :11:24.
promotion themselves. Our district journalist has more. | :11:24. | :11:28.
The waterfalls - it is not difficult to see why this part of | :11:28. | :11:35.
the coastline is betrayed as an E area of outstanding natural beauty. | :11:35. | :11:40.
-- is betrayed. It is not the only duel along this stretch of coast. | :11:40. | :11:43.
Many in the tourist industry here feel they do not get the promotion | :11:43. | :11:48.
they deserve and are missing out on vital business. So how the Glens of | :11:48. | :11:53.
Antrim seems to be neglected. We're not sure why this happens. Perhaps | :11:53. | :11:57.
because we're so close to the Giant's Causeway. We are only 25 | :11:57. | :12:05.
miles away. We feel that self-help is the answer. And so the Antrim | :12:05. | :12:09.
glens tourist group have created their own pocket guide which they | :12:09. | :12:14.
say will be like taking a local alongside. It details everything | :12:14. | :12:21.
from walking and fishing to local folklore. A lot of people come and | :12:22. | :12:26.
do a whistle-stop tour. They go to the Giant's Causeway and then go | :12:26. | :12:30.
back to Belfast. We want them to stop in this region and spent time | :12:30. | :12:35.
here. Everyone has spin-offs from that, not just accommodation | :12:35. | :12:43.
providers but the restaurants, bars and taxi services. We want to try | :12:43. | :12:46.
and build up Community Support. That is very important and | :12:46. | :12:50.
sometimes that has been missed in the past. The to his board denies | :12:50. | :12:55.
failing to promote the glens at the expense of the Giant's Causeway and | :12:55. | :13:01.
other attractions. We see it as very much one of her signature part | :13:01. | :13:06.
-- projects. As far is been left out is concerned, we are more | :13:06. | :13:10.
concerned about promoting the whole of the region. Once we get people | :13:10. | :13:16.
into the region, they can look good local maps and attractions that are | :13:16. | :13:20.
supplied. It is very unique and the Rhone culture year. We do not see | :13:20. | :13:25.
it as being left out. Details of the pocket guide will now be | :13:25. | :13:30.
available on the to his board website. For those in the Glens of | :13:30. | :13:39.
Antrim it is a chance for them to The summer months can be a busy | :13:40. | :13:45.
time and for the RNLI. It is known for its daring sea rescues but is | :13:45. | :13:53.
now looking for a power to keep people safe in and out of the wades. | :13:53. | :13:58.
Another busy day on port Stuart Strand. This summer, the watchful | :13:58. | :14:04.
eye is being kept on those enjoying the waves. RNLI lifeguards will be | :14:04. | :14:09.
patrolling seven beaches along the north coast. For the last five | :14:09. | :14:14.
years, we have had an in house Life Guard Service. The opportunity came | :14:14. | :14:20.
on board to work with the RNLI. In the current economic climate, there | :14:20. | :14:25.
are a lot more people staying at home. We encourage people to come | :14:25. | :14:30.
down, have a fun-filled day. Beautiful beaches and above all | :14:30. | :14:34.
feel that they are safe. This is the type of emergency the Life | :14:34. | :14:39.
Guards may have to deal with. Bringing an unconscious were too | :14:39. | :14:45.
sure. The team is ready and willing to put their training into practice. | :14:45. | :14:50.
I heard the RNLI were coming in, so it was a fantastic opportunity for | :14:50. | :14:55.
me. We try to talk to the public as much as we can to spread the | :14:55. | :15:00.
messages. Most people, once you explain and advise them are very | :15:00. | :15:08.
positive. They have trust in youth. You have to be aware of the people | :15:08. | :15:13.
that are in the water. Many people might think that being | :15:13. | :15:16.
a lifeguard is very dramatic, dashing into the ocean and saving | :15:16. | :15:21.
people. There are those times, but most of their job is spent | :15:21. | :15:27.
preventing accidents before they happens. We advise all swimmers to | :15:27. | :15:33.
swim between the red and yellow flags. Looking at what these guys | :15:33. | :15:39.
did yesterday, over the course of the day they did 73 preventative | :15:39. | :15:43.
actions. When we do training we have a saying that a Good Life | :15:44. | :15:50.
Guard never gets wet because they do all of the groundwork before. If | :15:50. | :15:56.
so whether it is going for a dip, or just watch him -- walking the | :15:56. | :16:02.
dog, rest assured there is someone are looking out for you. Belfast | :16:02. | :16:07.
City Council, Belfast city centre should I say, is holding a special | :16:07. | :16:12.
opening ceremony around now. They are hosting that glamping over the | :16:12. | :16:19.
next four days. -- they are hosting the British transplant Games. | :16:19. | :16:23.
600 athletes had just made their way through Belfast city centre. | :16:23. | :16:29.
Most have been on a journey only a Libyans could dream of. One of the | :16:29. | :16:35.
organisers is here. Tell us about what is happening. It is fantastic. | :16:35. | :16:40.
We have the British transplant Games coming to Belfast. It is like | :16:40. | :16:45.
no sporting event we have ever seen. Not only is the competition fierce, | :16:45. | :16:49.
but every one of these athletes have got their own story about | :16:49. | :16:54.
getting the gift of life and the defence that has made to them. It | :16:54. | :16:59.
is about the message we are trying to get across. Each athlete will be | :16:59. | :17:03.
in fierce competition with each other. It will be brilliant to | :17:03. | :17:08.
watch. It is about the message of organ donations. These lives have | :17:08. | :17:13.
been saved due to organ donation. How can this event raised the | :17:13. | :17:18.
profile? These events make a huge difference. We have seen Belfast | :17:18. | :17:23.
responded tremendously to the Games. We have got many more on the organ | :17:23. | :17:28.
Donor Register and we won that number to keep rises. The youngest | :17:28. | :17:34.
competitor is four, the oldest is about 80. The youngest is here. It | :17:34. | :17:39.
is a special weekend for everyone? Absolutely. We are celebrating | :17:39. | :17:43.
three years yesterday of our daughter's transplant. We never | :17:44. | :17:48.
dreamed she would be representing Belfast in a sporting event. She is | :17:48. | :17:52.
really looking forward to it. We have been practising today and she | :17:52. | :17:58.
is raring to go tomorrow morning. They are so many athletes competing. | :17:58. | :18:05.
Yes, there is. We recognise one or two children we have seen in | :18:05. | :18:08.
hospital. It is great to meet up with these people. Hopefully we | :18:09. | :18:14.
will see more and more of these events around the United Kingdom. | :18:14. | :18:19.
We will move on to Golfs. They could be seen less of Rory McIlroy | :18:19. | :18:24.
Roy over the next year or so. He has given an indication he is going | :18:24. | :18:28.
to rejoin the the the US Tour. Speaking in the States, he has been | :18:28. | :18:35.
talking about house-hunting. I feel as if I play my best golf over here. | :18:35. | :18:40.
Am very comfortable in this country. I am going to look at a few houses | :18:40. | :18:49.
in Florida. High and it definitely are looking towards coming back and | :18:49. | :18:54.
playing a full schedule over here. At the World Golf Championship | :18:54. | :19:00.
event in Ohio, he had a reasonable start. Graeme McDowell finished one | :19:00. | :19:04.
over and Darren Clarke has just teed off with Tiger Woods. Moving | :19:04. | :19:08.
on, the Irish Football Association along with its Welsh and Scottish | :19:09. | :19:12.
counterpart are opposed to a British team at the Olympic Games | :19:12. | :19:17.
next year. There was a British team their 75 years ago, and a Belfast | :19:17. | :19:27.
:19:27. | :19:27. | ||
man was on it. Jesse Owens was undoubtedly the | :19:27. | :19:37.
:19:37. | :19:39. | ||
outstanding athlete of the 1936 They were the first Olympics to be | :19:40. | :19:49.
televised live. And politics featured as prominently as a sport. | :19:49. | :19:52.
A Belfast man experienced the game's first hand as part of the | :19:52. | :19:56.
Great Britain football squad having turned down the chance to go | :19:56. | :20:04.
professional with Manchester United. I definitely saw Hitler. To be in | :20:04. | :20:08.
the same stadium as Jesse Owens, a suppose if I had signed for | :20:08. | :20:12.
Manchester United that would not have happened. Nowadays, | :20:12. | :20:21.
professionals can go to the Olympics. To me, he was a real | :20:21. | :20:27.
Olympians. Magnificent leadership qualities and indeed I would say | :20:27. | :20:33.
that if I was selecting an international 11 of all Ireland | :20:33. | :20:37.
players, he would definitely be the full-backs. | :20:37. | :20:42.
Bertie died 22 years ago, but this official handbook gives an insight | :20:42. | :20:47.
into how different things were for the players them. Can you imagine | :20:47. | :20:54.
the superstars of today been told to bring their own soap, but that | :20:54. | :20:59.
their shirt, knickers and stockings would be provided. The games ended | :20:59. | :21:02.
in disappointment as they were defeated in the quarter-finals by | :21:02. | :21:12.

Poland. We all like to win. His big regret was the Cliftonville | :21:14. | :21:19.
goalkeeper was not on the team. He always maintained that if Fred had | :21:19. | :21:24.
been doing goals, they would have won at least a gold medal. I do not | :21:24. | :21:29.
think he was too happy with the English goalkeeper. He did not | :21:29. | :21:34.
return from Germany with a medal, but every participant in Berlin was | :21:34. | :21:38.
presented with this memorial medallion. It has now been handed | :21:38. | :21:43.
down to Bertie's nine-year-old great-grandson. | :21:43. | :21:48.
Rugby and three Ulstermen had been named in Ireland's starting 15 for | :21:48. | :21:53.
the World Cup warm-up game against Scotland. Paddy Wallace, Andrew | :21:53. | :21:57.
Trimble and Tom Court all get the chance to impress in Edinburgh. | :21:57. | :22:02.
Robert Kearney returns in full-back for the first time since November, | :22:02. | :22:07.
and his provincial team-mate Leo Cullen will captain the side. Kick- | :22:07. | :22:14.
off is 2:15pm. Still no sign of any sunshine. The | :22:14. | :22:18.
parade are still ongoing for the British Transport games. There is a | :22:18. | :22:25.
reception tonight in the Waterfront Hall. | :22:25. | :22:29.
Let's see what it is like at the annual Taste Fest in botanic | :22:29. | :22:33.
gardens. A all sorts of food will be | :22:33. | :22:42.
showcased in the next few days. I mention Glastonbury earlier, it | :22:42. | :22:51.
is not unlike it. The rain is falling. In here it is cooking. | :22:51. | :22:55.
Some of Northern Ireland's top chefs. What is the big seller | :22:55. | :23:05.
:23:05. | :23:05. | ||
tonight? So far it is pork belly. Let's walk along here. Some of our | :23:05. | :23:14.
top chefs. Selling everything from Stratford Proms to my goals. About | :23:14. | :23:19.
the end we have kangaroo on the menu. The man who is cooking the | :23:19. | :23:27.
kangaroo is here. All the way from Australia. Can you cook me | :23:28. | :23:34.
something in a minute question mark we will give it a go. Over here we | :23:34. | :23:40.
have a member of the organising group. What is this all about? | :23:40. | :23:44.
is a celebration of food and entertainment in Belfast that | :23:44. | :23:48.
celebrates everything in Northern Ireland in terms of culture. We're | :23:48. | :23:56.
very proud of this event. It began as a Taste Fest about 10 years ago? | :23:56. | :24:00.
In 1991 we introduced it as a Belfast taste best. It eventually | :24:00. | :24:10.
:24:10. | :24:11. | ||
evolved to taste and music. rain is falling, let's hope it | :24:11. | :24:19.
picks up. Let's see what the chef is doing. We have a little kangaroo. | :24:19. | :24:29.
:24:29. | :24:31. | ||
Tastes a lot like Rennison. I have never tried a kangaroo before. Not | :24:31. | :24:41.

too hot? Not too hot, just right. Skippy will never seem at the same | :24:49. | :24:59.

link about hopping over to the Just as we thought we were getting | :25:14. | :25:19.

areas. -- humoured and warm. Showers will start to ease away in | :25:29. | :25:35.
the next hour or so. Some of them are still quite a sharp in eastern | :25:35. | :25:40.
counties. When they fade away things gradually freshen up in the | :25:40. | :25:46.
West. Not as muddy as it was last night. Hopefully more comfortable | :25:46. | :25:51.
for sleeping and it will feel much fresher tomorrow. Tomorrow will | :25:51. | :25:59.
stay dry in most places. Showers will be fairly isolated. If fresher | :25:59. | :26:05.
feel tomorrow, a more noticeable breeze. Pleasance spells of | :26:05. | :26:09.
sunshine so. By cannot guarantee no showers tomorrow, there will be one | :26:09. | :26:14.
or a two and more likely across the north-west. As we come further | :26:14. | :26:21.
south and east we're more likely to state drive. When the son is out, | :26:21. | :26:26.
and the breeze is easing off it should feel quite pleasant. Not as | :26:26. | :26:31.
warm as today but for most places it should stay dry. A pretty good | :26:31. | :26:40.
day if you have to do anything outdoors tomorrow. Much more | :26:40. | :26:46.
unsettled conditions likely for the weekend. Fortunately the festival | :26:46. | :26:50.
goes on until 10pm so there will be some dry weather at times over the | :26:50. | :26:56.
weekend. For Saturday quite cloudy in the morning, it should gradually | :26:56. | :27:01.
start to dry up from the West later in the day. On Sunday it is the | :27:01. | :27:11.

making the headlines tonight. The Republican side on Facebook has | :27:17. | :27:21.
been shut down after it was criticised for putting police | :27:21. | :27:26.
officers' lives at risk. Plans for two new hotels in Belfast | :27:26. | :27:31.
could be revived after the initial project seemed to have been shelved. | :27:31. | :27:36.
The economic crisis is spreading. The EU Commission has warned debt | :27:36. | :27:43.
contagion threatens Italy and Spain. Major human rights groups have | :27:43. | :27:48.
decided to boycott the independent inquiry into what British security | :27:48. | :27:53. |
