Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Donna Traynor and Mark | 0:00:12 | 0:00:17
Carruthers. The headlines this Monday evening. Business and union | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
leaders meet over the world debt crisis. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:28
But the Finance Minister says there's not much room for manoeuvre. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
That does not mean we should throw up our hands and surrender and say, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
nothing we can do about this, bury our heads in the sand and hope it | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
goes away. Three men appear in court charged | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
with the attempted murder of a teenager in Antrim. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
The GAA referee in a critical condition after collapsing during a | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
match in Newry. Was an oil spill at a big motor | 0:00:46 | 0:00:51
bike race at the weekend deliberate sabotage? | 0:00:51 | 0:00:56
And is this the man to stop the exodus of young Northern Ireland | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
footballers to the Republic? And summer seems to be on hold for | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
most of this week - tomorrow though is the exception. I'll have all the | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
weather for you later in the programme. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
The Finance Minister says he will make protecting jobs his priority | 0:01:09 | 0:01:15
in the face of continuing worries about the world economy. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Sammy Wilson chaired a meeting of business and union leaders this | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
morning, but admitted there is little the Executive at Stormont | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
can really do. We'll be hearing from him shortly. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
The turmoil on the international markets is all related to the huge | 0:01:29 | 0:01:34
amounts of debt which have built up in many economies, including ours. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
BBC Newsline's Natasha Sayee has been looking at the debt problems | 0:01:37 | 0:01:42
which run from the high street to high finance. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:49
Cast your mind back to the boom times around four years ago. We | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
talked about the huge increases in the value of houses, credit was | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
cheap, shopping centres were flourishing. Victoria Square had | 0:01:57 | 0:02:02
just opened and for some, it's 1,000 humpbacks were within reach | 0:02:02 | 0:02:07
and if you could not afford it, but it on the expanding plastic -- | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
handbags. But the credit crunch and recession changed that and it is | 0:02:11 | 0:02:16
now a different world. In the good old days, we ran up huge personal | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
debt because it was cheap and easy to borrow money. But now we have to | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
pay it back and we are spending less and are worried about the | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
future, and that means we are keeping a tighter eye on the purse | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
strings. There is obviously less money around and the cost of living | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
is more expensive so everyone is generally watching what they are | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
spending and how they are spending, spending smarter probably. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:46
spending as much and cutting back on a few things. I do not shop as | 0:02:46 | 0:02:53
much as I used to. You look for finish you do need, what is the | 0:02:53 | 0:02:58
point of spending your money when you need it? The belt-tightening is | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
affecting us all and some businesses are tightening. This is | 0:03:02 | 0:03:08
noticeable in the shops. In Castle Court, fought for his down and some | 0:03:08 | 0:03:14
stores are taking in less and the store is up for half the value it | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
was for sale at a few years ago. Were an people do not spend money, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
that creates difficulties for businesses -- when people. Business | 0:03:23 | 0:03:27
costs are going up and they are in the squeeze. They want more people | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
to spend and keep prices down so people will continue to buy, but | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
their costs are also going up. So it is a difficult balance for | 0:03:37 | 0:03:43
retailers. So with consumers, banks and businesses weighed down by debt, | 0:03:43 | 0:03:48
economic activity has dropped and ironically, to plug the hole, | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
governments across the Western world borrowed more. But the | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
institutions they borrowed from are increasingly nervous they will not | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
get their money back, which has been the cause of the turmoil | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
recently. So governments including Stormont have to cut some of that | 0:04:03 | 0:04:10
debt, it is called the leveraging. And that means that we are facing a | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
long and painful period in the economy, and one where we are all | 0:04:14 | 0:04:23
going to have to learn to within our means. -- to learn to live. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
Today's meeting of business and union leaders was convened by the | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
Finance Minister to look for ideas on how to reduce the potential | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
damage of global forces on our local economy. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
But what can a Regional Finance Minister do? Our business and | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
economics editor, Jim Fitzpatrick, caught up with Sammy Wilson after | 0:04:38 | 0:04:44
the talks and asked him if the meeting was purely for show. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
first of all, we do recognise there are limitations any regional | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54
government will have given that the global pressure there is, whether | 0:04:54 | 0:05:00
it is with the euro or the American economy or whatever. But | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
nevertheless, the meeting turned out to be quite useful in my view | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08
to look first of all at how do the people who are working at the | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
Northern Ireland economy from various sites assess the impact? | 0:05:11 | 0:05:17
And secondly, have they any ideas on anything's which they believe we | 0:05:17 | 0:05:23
as an Executive should be doing? And people might say they are | 0:05:23 | 0:05:29
marginal, but if marginals saves 500 or 600 jobs, is that not | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
important? It is to those people to keep their jobs. And what one idea | 0:05:34 | 0:05:39
do you most want to focus on now? We are determined to safeguard as | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
many jobs in private and public- sector and look for ways of | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48
creating jobs in the private and public sector that people can be | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
sure they will have an income in the future to spend. You are going | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
to have a separate meeting with the banks, are you expecting a fight on | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
your hands given what people were telling you here today? The banks | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
are in a difficult position, they have created many difficulties for | 0:06:04 | 0:06:10
businesses as well and I have been critical of the bank's critically - | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
- publicly and privately. I also recognise the difficulties they | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
have. However, I do think they have an important role to play in | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
Northern Ireland. And this retrenchment when they are more | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
concerned about, what does our balance sheet look like, rather | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
than, what impact to we have on the businesses who have been good | 0:06:32 | 0:06:37
customers for years, is something I think I need to iron out with them. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:44
Many thanks. That was Sammy Wilson talking. Three men in their early | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
20s have appeared in court charged with attempting to kill a teenage | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
boy in Antrim on Friday. The charges relate to an attack on a 17 | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
year old in Station Road that the police believe had a sectarian | 0:06:53 | 0:06:59
motive. Our reporter, Chris Page, was at Coleraine Magistrates' Court. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
Arriving at Coleraine court has today, three men charged with | 0:07:03 | 0:07:09

out the attack on Jordan Duffy, a Catholic, and police believe the | 0:07:29 | 0:07:35
assault was sectarian. It happened early on Friday. Jordan Duffy's | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
injuries were initially thought to be life-threatening and he is now | 0:07:39 | 0:07:44
in a stable condition in Belfast. A detective constable said there were | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
three witnesses to the attack and that in police interviews, each of | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
the accused gave a different version of events. There were no | 0:07:51 | 0:07:56
bail applications. The three men were remanded in custody. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
A football referee who had a heart attack at a club game last night | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
was given life-saving treatment with a defibrillator on the pitch. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
He was in a critical condition when taken to hospital, but his | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
condition has now improved. The Gaelic football match was in | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
Newry between Burren and Longstone. And, as our district journalist | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Francis Gorman reports, it's the second time in just a few weeks | 0:08:14 | 0:08:22
that one of the heart machines has been used at a local sports game. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:28
The game was nearly over when 46- year-old Gabriel told he collapsed | 0:08:28 | 0:08:34
on the pitch. Medics took -- medics rushed to his side assisted by | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
medics and a nurse. She was back at nurse today and with a volunteer | 0:08:38 | 0:08:44
patient showed how a different a later works. She described what | 0:08:44 | 0:08:51
happened at the match when she saw the referee for. A nurse and a | 0:08:51 | 0:08:56
doctor were at the scene. I carried out CPR and waited on the deferred | 0:08:56 | 0:09:01
a later to come, which came fairly quickly. We attached into the | 0:09:01 | 0:09:06
machine and carried out a shock. That was done twice and that | 0:09:06 | 0:09:12
brought him back into briefing and a pulse. He was lucky. And very | 0:09:12 | 0:09:17
lucky. He was lucky the machine was close to hand and that there was a | 0:09:17 | 0:09:22
team of medical people with him at that time. The consultant who | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
treated the referee says all sports clubs should have a machine on the | 0:09:26 | 0:09:31
premises. The fact there was one at the club meant Gabriel's pulse was | 0:09:31 | 0:09:36
restored quickly and he had no brain damage. Undoubtedly, it meant | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
that most likely it saved his life. If there had been a delay, it is | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
more likely he would not have made a normal new logical recovery or | 0:09:45 | 0:09:50
would not have been alert when he arrived to us. Following the death | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
of All Ireland champion -- and all Ireland's champion, many clubs now | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
have a machine on the premises in case of medical emergencies. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04

The organisers of the Mid Antrim 150 Motorcycle Road Race have vowed | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
to keep the event going, despite its cancellation at the weekend. It | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
is believed an oil spill on the course near Clough had been put | 0:10:32 | 0:10:41

there deliberately. BBC Newsline's Will Leitch reports. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:48
The riders race to Antrim's rural roads been village streets, speeds | 0:10:48 | 0:10:53
approaching 200 miles per hour. But not this weekend. The discovery of | 0:10:53 | 0:10:58
oil on sections of the track outside Clough made a difficult | 0:10:58 | 0:11:03
choice for race organisers. could have smelled the diesel in | 0:11:03 | 0:11:08
the morning. I got the roads closed and contacted the police, and the | 0:11:08 | 0:11:13
road was totally covered in diesel and heavy oil. Go at morning, | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
everybody, not the best of starts today! For the second year in a row, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:22
spectators were left and wondering when racing might start and | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
weathered the spillages on two major sections were up by accident | 0:11:27 | 0:11:32
or design. One of the worst-hit areas was here, riders come along | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
here at speed before slowing down for a left-hand turn. They say they | 0:11:36 | 0:11:40
are ill was put to with it on the road directly in the wind when they | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
would be racing and where they would break. The person that did | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
this knew exactly what they were doing, they are involved in | 0:11:48 | 0:11:53
motorcycle racing, that is what I believe. It is very, very | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
disappointing. Then at lunch time came the rain and the cancellation | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
of the race meeting. Considering the amount of work done on this | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
course over the last few weeks, I just feel so let down and | 0:12:06 | 0:12:10
disappointed. Let down by the people that did the work. But my | 0:12:10 | 0:12:14
concern was the safety of the competitors. Whoever was behind it, | 0:12:14 | 0:12:20
it worked. No racing this year. And while club members have told the | 0:12:20 | 0:12:25
BBC they want to continue, they are meeting tonight to consider the | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
future of the Mid Antrim 150 Motorcycle Road Race. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
Police are being urged to make rural crime a priority following a | 0:12:32 | 0:12:40
28% rise in thefts from farms over the past two years. One of the main | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
insurance companies' estimates agricultural machinery worth about | 0:12:44 | 0:12:52
3.8 million is stolen annually. Worth almost 50,000, this is the | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
sort of farm machinery thieves are after. But in this case, the fee | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
for spotted driving it away and the tractor was recovered. -- the thief | 0:13:01 | 0:13:06

Diouf would have been caught red- handed. A half an hour later, the | 0:13:10 | 0:13:19
police arrived and did not have a big interest. It had left... I do | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
not know why it someone else could have not come out sooner, this is | 0:13:22 | 0:13:27
life. The many agricultural vehicles stolen in Northern Ireland | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
are not recovered, but the NFU Mutual says some vehicles have been | 0:13:31 | 0:13:36
recovered as far away as Australia and South Africa. That points to | 0:13:36 | 0:13:41
the involvement of criminal gangs using established routes out of the | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
country. It used to be mainly equipment out of building sites, | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
but since the property crash, farmyards are now the major target. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:55
We have a lot of ongoing reports of the thefts of quad bikes, tractors, | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
livestock, power tools, and the problem seems to be getting worse. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
Back today's report finally quantify is the extent of the | 0:14:02 | 0:14:07
problem which is a good thing and we need to focus on the solution. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:14

the switch to the Republic. We have spent a lot of money in developing | 0:18:33 | 0:18:39
young players in Northern Ireland. To see them walkaway at the end is | 0:18:39 | 0:18:49
disappointing and disheartening. I would like to say that I would like | 0:18:49 | 0:18:55
to see a stronger squad. McLean said it was his dream to rip it | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
does represent the Republic of Ireland but for the IFA, player | 0:18:59 | 0:19:03
eligibility is turning into a nightmare. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:08
The domestic football season kicked off this weekend. Peter Thomson who | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
has been called into the Northern Ireland spot didn't get on the | 0:19:11 | 0:19:15
score sheet but the champion start their title defence with a 2-1 win | 0:19:15 | 0:19:23
over Ken Adam. Nathan Hanley picked the spot to score their second game. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:29
Glentoran beat Crusaders. Darren Boyce snatched a 90th winner. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:34
For Martin Donnelly fired in the early goal of the game for | 0:19:34 | 0:19:40
Cliftonville. Darren Murray made the perfect start to his career. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
The home side got their first ever win. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:53

Add to a dramatic day for Kevin my kit -- Ciara Mageean. She fell on | 0:19:55 | 0:20:00
their finish line through exhaustion but when her next race. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:04
This is her out in front in the closing stages of the 800 metres. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
She had led the race from the start, going out hard to break clear of | 0:20:08 | 0:20:14
the other competitors. That exertion took its toll feet from | 0:20:14 | 0:20:20
the finish line. She was clearly distraught | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
afterwards and it might have ended another athlete afternoon. She | 0:20:24 | 0:20:29
picked herself up and went for some food and rest and two hours later, | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
she was back on the track, contesting and winning the 1,500 | 0:20:33 | 0:20:37
metres. I came off the track thinking, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:43
right, we have to do it. I had some food and decided to warm up and see | 0:20:43 | 0:20:52
how I felt. I didn't really not want to run. I am pretty glad I did | 0:20:52 | 0:21:01
because I came out on top. Another athlete who should be pleased is | 0:21:01 | 0:21:07
Jason Smith. He won the men's 400 metres and is on the Ireland team | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
for the World Athletics Championships in Korea. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:15
It was one of those weekends where -- for to run. They lost their | 0:21:15 | 0:21:25
0:21:25 | 0:21:40 | ||
Seven points was the difference. Strange as it may sound, attention | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
is taking -- turning to the future of some of those players. 92 grown | 0:21:45 | 0:21:55
0:21:55 | 0:21:59 | ||
men who played at Croke Park are over 30 years of age and... A lot | 0:21:59 | 0:22:04
have dedicated their lives. They have made the sacrifices and the | 0:22:04 | 0:22:08
commitment and have had the honour of playing for to Rome. Those | 0:22:09 | 0:22:18
0:22:19 | 0:22:19 | ||
players don't own Tyrone anything. They should not rush into any | 0:22:19 | 0:22:23
decisions and wait for a whole thing up. They are expected to meet | 0:22:23 | 0:22:28
some time next week and there could be seven players calling it a day. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
If those players resign, the message is they won't be easy to | 0:22:32 | 0:22:40
replace. The thing for any manager is they want a balance of | 0:22:40 | 0:22:45
experience. They have been very successful and you will not replace | 0:22:45 | 0:22:50
those players overnight. I wouldn't be too hasty in writing them off | 0:22:50 | 0:22:55
yet. After so much success, there may yet be plenty more to be | 0:22:55 | 0:23:00
positive about if you are a Tyrone a supporter. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:06
For the rest of the weekend's sport and we have a dramatic bike race | 0:23:06 | 0:23:09
involving this man at Brands Hatch. There is close racing and then | 0:23:09 | 0:23:15
there is this. Alastair Seeley and Ben Wilson have battled it out all | 0:23:16 | 0:23:22
year but they race at Brands Hatch was a classic. He got her money | 0:23:22 | 0:23:30
outside again. In the end, the Carrick Fergus a man run by three | 0:23:30 | 0:23:39
hundreds of the second. I had to nudge him out of the way. I was in | 0:23:39 | 0:23:45
front and I could hear him coming. We rub elbows but that gets me | 0:23:45 | 0:23:51
fired up ready for the action. And also met race with them. I really | 0:23:51 | 0:23:57
enjoyed it and it meant a lot crossing their line. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:04
Not much to shout about for the Irish rugby team. Declan Kidney's | 0:24:04 | 0:24:11
men were defeated. Next up, 80 for Test, France and Bordeaux this | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
Saturday evening. Rory McIlroy Roy has shown some | 0:24:14 | 0:24:19
good form in America ahead of this week's 4th major of the year. He | 0:24:19 | 0:24:28
finished in a tie for 6th in Ohio. He would take up for membership of | 0:24:28 | 0:24:33
the US Tour next season. There was a unique ceremony for Jimi Ogunkoya | 0:24:33 | 0:24:37
Royal Saturday. He was awarded his MBE on the pitch at his beloved | 0:24:37 | 0:24:43
Burnley, thanks to some advice from an old team-mate. I got a phone | 0:24:43 | 0:24:48
call from Harry Gregg, the Manchester United goalkeeper. His | 0:24:48 | 0:24:54
first words on the phone wire, "you are in for the most boring day of | 0:24:54 | 0:25:00
your life, going to Buckingham Palace to pick it up." that is | 0:25:00 | 0:25:06
where I decided to have it here. emotional day for one of the great. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:15
Was it a boring day for an OBE? I didn't think so. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:23
Cecilia hopefully is going to Cecilia hopefully is going to | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
become a Dame if she brings us some sunshine. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:31
I have ever been one for titles. We have not got a lot of sunshine | 0:25:31 | 0:25:39
this week. Tomorrow, it is your best day of the week. We had some | 0:25:39 | 0:25:47
strange weather over the weekend. Varied weather. If you saw clouds | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
like that running towards you, you would probably head for shelter. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:57
The Red Arrows managed to get their display at Newcastle. There was | 0:25:57 | 0:26:03
some flooding also over the weekend. Today, we haven't had rain but the | 0:26:03 | 0:26:08
wind has been cool. It probably felt like autumn in some places | 0:26:09 | 0:26:14
today. That will slowly eased during the next 24 hours. Still | 0:26:14 | 0:26:18
breezy along the north coast. One or two share was passing through. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:25
Most places are dry. -- one or two showers passing through. We will | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
keep an eye on things from Wednesday onwards because there is | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
a lot of wet weather coming in. There's no warning yet but it will | 0:26:33 | 0:26:41
certainly be significant. Tomorrow morning, generally dry. One are to | 0:26:41 | 0:26:46
showers in County Antrim. Some sunshine at times and the winds | 0:26:46 | 0:26:50
starting to ease. It should be dry in most eastern counties. When the | 0:26:50 | 0:26:58
sun is shining, it shouldn't feel too bad. Temperatures nothing to | 0:26:58 | 0:27:04
write home about. Over to the West, although dry, the cloud will be | 0:27:04 | 0:27:09
building. That is ahead of the rain coming our way tomorrow evening. We | 0:27:09 | 0:27:15
see the rain its opinion around teatime. By midnight, it will be | 0:27:15 | 0:27:20
raining in most places. We have persistent and heavy rain during | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
the second part of the night. A lot of surface water to come on | 0:27:24 | 0:27:29
Wednesday morning. That rain will continue during the day. Not a | 0:27:29 | 0:27:33
great day on Wednesday. Still heavy rain for the second half of the | 0:27:33 | 0:27:35
rain for the second half of the week. The temperatures rise a | 0:27:35 | 0:27:41
little bit. Not a great combination. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:47
The headlines: Business and union leaders have that the finance | 0:27:47 | 0:27:50
