Good evening. A motorcycle racer from Northern Ireland has been

killed in a crash on the Isle of Man. He's the second local rider to

die in just a few days. 20-year-old Wayne Hamilton from Portadown died

after crashing today in the Junior Manx Grand Prix. He was described

as a very promising competitor who had already achieved notable

success in his road racing career. On Saturday, he won the Newcomers A

race on the island. He's seen here beating one of our most successful

racers, Ryan Farquar, at the Ulster Grand Prix earlier this month.

Wayne Hamilton's death follows that of 41-year-old Adrian McFarland

from Plumbridge. He was killed in a crash during a race in the Czech

Republic on Saturday. Trade unionists at the Omagh Meats

plant say over 200 workers could be laid off from tomorrow because of

industrial action. Some workers are on strike over the restructuring at

the factory. According to the union UNITE, management have told

employees they can no longer guarantee work for them. Omagh

Meats is part of the Foyle Food Group. The company has declined to

comment. The head of the Catholic Church in

Ireland has strongly defended the confidentiality of the confessional

box. At Knock Shrine in County Mayo today, Cardinal Sean Brady said it

was a sacred and treasured rite, describing any intrusion as a

challenge to a free society. Last month, the Irish Government

announced new child protection measures in the wake of the Cloyne

Report, making it mandatory for priests to reveal child abuse, even

if it becomes known through confession. In a statement today,

the minister for Justice said the new measures would apply regardless

of any internal rules of any religious grouping.

Tributes have been being paid to the snooker referee Len Ganley, who

has died at the age of 68. The Lurgan man suffered from diabetes

and died in hospital yesterday. The former milkman, bus driver and

chimney sweep officiated at four World Championship finals during

snooker's boom years. He was widely respected and admired. It was his

Northern Ireland accent and maybe his build. He was a big man. When

they heard and the Northern Ireland accent, they said, "a big man from

Northern Ireland, but a huge character. He was always right. No

matter what you said, he had a better answer and knew every single

thing about snooker. He was a dictionary of snooker.

While local councils await new powers to tackle Northern Ireland's

litter problem, it's now at its worst for four years. And as Kevin

Sharkey reports, that's despite the spending of millions of pounds.

It doesn't take too long to find on the streets and roads and parks. To

clean it up, the price is high. �100,000 a day, �34 million a year

we are spending on it, on the vast majority we don't need to. The it's

not confined to town centres. This is a suburban street on the

outskirts of Belfast. Well away from the shopping precinct and busy

nightlife. You might not expect to find too much rubbish around her. I

Over here, an empty bottle within 50 yards. It's the same in parks

and recreation areas and dog fouling is one of the biggest

problems, increasing fivefold over the last year. Even with the heft

of a hefty fine. People's mindset has got to change. It takes a long

time to do that. I'm not sure you can do it with legislation. It

people's attitude which has got to change. No, it getting worse

instead a better. That should have been lifted. This was on Monday.

Just teach your grandchildren and children what's right and wrong.

Then everything should be all right. And on bank holidays like this,

some people will go to the bins only to find them overloaded. Some

don't even do that. They will throw the rubbish on the ground.
