Good evening. The homes of the Catholic PSNI officer and a doctor | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
who has worked with police as a forensic Medical Officer have been | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
targeted an overnight bomb attacks near Claudy. No one was hurt. In a | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
moment we will speak to Keith that -- Doctor Keith Munro. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
The more senior police officer in Londonderry says he believes the | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
Real IRA was responsible and has described their tax as reckless and | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
desperate. Residents outside Claudy say they | 0:01:38 | 0:01:43
first became aware of an attack late last night. Neighbours say it | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
is normally a quiet country area and they are shocked by what | 0:01:47 | 0:01:53
happened. We heard a loud bang at around 12:15pm. The police came to | 0:01:53 | 0:02:01
the door and said that there had been an incident. There was a big | 0:02:01 | 0:02:11
bang. The house shook. We did not know what it was. The police say a | 0:02:11 | 0:02:16
device damaged the front door of his serving PSNI of us are. He has | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
been in the service for the three years. They discovered his home had | 0:02:19 | 0:02:26

Pre-summit should is strong condemnation. They say it was a | 0:02:30 | 0:02:36
cowardly bomb attack. They have urged anyone in this community to | 0:02:36 | 0:02:44
come forward. Parishioners attending Mass condemned the | 0:02:44 | 0:02:51
bombers. There are people who do not move on and will not allow | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
society and to move on. The attack a peace-loving family who are doing | 0:02:55 | 0:03:00
their best to bring us forward to a better future. It is shocking that | 0:03:00 | 0:03:05
this has happened at this time. It is a very criteria. There has been | 0:03:05 | 0:03:11
no trouble here. In a separate attacks several miles away, army | 0:03:11 | 0:03:18
bomb disposal experts were called to deal with the device. Dr Keith | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
Munro has worked with the police over many years. We have a police | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
doctor, a person who has been a doctor and a police doctor for over | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
40 years, who spent his professional life coming to police | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
stations, ensuring that people here arrested by the police get the | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
medical attention they deserve. Ensure that their welfare is looked | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
after. He is the chairman of the board of trustees. He spends his | 0:03:43 | 0:03:48
life helping others. Last night, these two servants of the community | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
were targeted by people whose actions stand in stark contrast to | 0:03:52 | 0:03:58
their own. Police say the men, two of whom are aged 36 and the other | 0:03:58 | 0:04:04
who is 20 years of age have been arrested in Derry. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
Stay with us, we will be talking like to Dr Munro. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:16
Back in April, the cult -- Ulster Unionist leader Tom Eliot and the | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
party's Executive Minister Danny Kennedy attended the funeral of the | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
murdered Catholic police constable Ronan Kerr. Now we can reveal they | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
are to face internal disciplinary proceedings within the Orange Order | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
for doing so. A lodge in Belfast has made a formal complaint against | 0:04:30 | 0:04:40
0:04:40 | 0:04:40 | ||
the two men. Man at's funeral was remarkable. -- | 0:04:40 | 0:04:46
Ronan Kerr's funeral was remarkable. But unlike the other politicians | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
present, they are members of the Orange Order. Mr Kennedy belongs to | 0:04:51 | 0:04:57
a lodge in County Armagh. Mr Elliott is a former county master. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:05
It bands its members from attending Catholic funerals. There was a | 0:05:05 | 0:05:10
letter of complaint written to the Grand Lodge. That lodge has gone | 0:05:10 | 0:05:16
further. They are making formal complaints to the two men county | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
lodges which means further action will follow. This is the logic | 0:05:21 | 0:05:29
behind the complaints. -- the lodge. They are taking part in the Belfast | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
12th. It alleges the two men had sold out principles for political | 0:05:34 | 0:05:39
expediency. They should have known better. Neither Tom Eliot nor Danny | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
Kennedy would comment today but a source close to them said they had | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
no regrets and they believe they had done the right thing by | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
attending constable care's funeral and they had no hesitation in | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
supporting his family. They felt no less orange our union us for doing | 0:05:54 | 0:05:59
so and that they were annoyed that the kind of mindset displayed by | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
Ilott here was that complained about them. A spokesman for the | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
Orange Order said its complaints procedure is a private matter. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:11
Unfortunately for them this now threatens to become very public | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
indeed. The search is continuing for the | 0:06:16 | 0:06:22
missing woman Karen Coyles. The 47- year-old to was the chairman of a | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
local club has not been seen since Sunday night. Her car was found | 0:06:26 | 0:06:35
outside Ballycastle cheap died club -- -- GAA club. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
This is a sea of the search far Karen Coyles. Having spent the day | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
here, it has been another troubling day for this community and for her | 0:06:44 | 0:06:49
family. While hope still remained that she would be found safe and | 0:06:49 | 0:06:54
well, fears are growing this evening. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:59
The search is now focused here about 1.5 miles away from her car | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
was found. Friends from this area have been helping out all day, | 0:07:05 | 0:07:11
others have travelled from neighbouring blocks. We have had | 0:07:11 | 0:07:21
0:07:21 | 0:07:21 | ||
numerous contacts from clubs from all around the county. It is really | 0:07:21 | 0:07:26
just a matter of the fact that everyone is together and doing | 0:07:26 | 0:07:35
their bit. Just shocked. It is not Karen. Karen is well respected, | 0:07:35 | 0:07:41
well-loved in the community by everybody. Karen is one of those | 0:07:41 | 0:07:46
people, I expect her to walk in here and ask, how can I help, what | 0:07:46 | 0:07:51
is going on here. Everybody knew Karen. It is out of character for | 0:07:51 | 0:07:58
her. Something is not right here. This is the coastline along | 0:07:58 | 0:08:03
Ballycastle. It is a very rugged coastline. Extensive searches have | 0:08:03 | 0:08:08
been carried out on the land along the cliff faces and at sea. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:13
This afternoon there was a renewed focus on this area. A couple of | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
divers went into the bottom of the cliff-face. Out of a camera's view | 0:08:17 | 0:08:27
I watched as two divers looked around the rocks. And while the | 0:08:27 | 0:08:33
specialist team did their set, volunteers will look on the land. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:39
We were along the rocks, there was nothing at all. I thought I would | 0:08:39 | 0:08:45
come up here and scan along the cliff with binoculars. Intensive | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
searching has been prompted by a train search-and-rescue dog. The | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
dogs searched the area at dawn. It indicated there were some clues | 0:08:53 | 0:09:02
around here. Joining me in Ballycastle is | 0:09:02 | 0:09:10
someone from the committee rescue service. The reaction from the dog | 0:09:10 | 0:09:19
was significant. It was. It led us to the general area at the moment. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
Air allowed other teams to identify any idea that we are concentrating | 0:09:23 | 0:09:27
on. You will have your specialised team working year through this | 0:09:27 | 0:09:32
evening and tomorrow. specialist teams have work today | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
and they will continue. The ground search team will work the rest of | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
the evening as well. Thank you for joining us. While much of the fog | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
is now will be on the search-and- rescue and the possible outcome, | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
here this evening the feelings and the mood of this community is quite | 0:09:49 | 0:09:55
sombre but they are sharing in the agony of Karen's family. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
Unemployment has risen again in Northern Ireland, although the rate | 0:09:59 | 0:10:04
of increase remains the UK average. End of this there were 60,400 | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
claimants, that is a 100 on the previous month. It means the | 0:10:07 | 0:10:12
unemployment rate for the last three months is 7.4% compared to | 0:10:12 | 0:10:18
the UK average of 7.9%. A young woman had told police she | 0:10:18 | 0:10:22
was raped in roots in front of her children has appeared in court. But | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
she is being accused of wasting police time and perverting the | 0:10:25 | 0:10:33
course of justice. This will month appeared in court | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
for the first time today. She made allegations of rape in March. Back | 0:10:37 | 0:10:43
then she told police she was walking here, near her home with | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
her two children when she was attacked by a man who sexually | 0:10:46 | 0:10:51
assaulted her. She said the man was in his fifties and he was walking a | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
white dog. Police appealed for witnesses and started an | 0:10:54 | 0:10:59
investigation. But in August it was no stock a day who found herself | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
charged over the matter. Police accuse her of wasting their time | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
and perverting the course of justice. In court today the 24- | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
year-old repeatedly shook her head as the charges were read out. And | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
as a police constable said he could connect those accused to that | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
charges. But a defence Alastair said her client denied the charges | 0:11:19 | 0:11:23
and had given a full account to the pleas of what had happened. The | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
solicitor also said that she regards herself as a victim of rape. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
The police constable said there were discrepancies in the several | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
accounts the woman had given. And our request for anonymity was | 0:11:35 | 0:11:41
denied and she was released on bail to appear again on 23rd October. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:47
Still to come on the programme: Extreme disappointment at the | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
Miyagi University campus or the slashing of extension plans. And we | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
talked to the man who bounced back after this in the car crash in the | 0:11:56 | 0:12:03
Far East. -- Magee University campus. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
You may have done the run already this evening taking your child to | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
their extra transferred test tuition. Thousands of parents are | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
doing the same as children prepare for the entrance tests in November. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
It has become something of an industry but not one that parents | 0:12:19 | 0:12:28
are proud. It is a taboo subject at the school gates. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
It is coming up to four o'clock and after a day spent in school, these | 0:12:32 | 0:12:38
children have come to this centre for an extra 80 minutes' tuition | 0:12:38 | 0:12:47
for the transfer test. Their parents pay 26 as session. The due | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
to concentrate on English and maths and familiarising the children with | 0:12:50 | 0:12:56
the format of the unofficial Tests. The syllabus the teachers are | 0:12:56 | 0:13:00
teaching are on the test, so some of the children need an extra | 0:13:00 | 0:13:05
explanation to help them through that. That is what we help with. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:10
Also the technique for the test is vital to get through this test. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
That is one of the main reasons that the children would come to the | 0:13:14 | 0:13:21
centre. A month his pupils is this boy. He will be doing both Tests, | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
that is five papers and all. His mother says he needed help with his | 0:13:25 | 0:13:30
maths and she wanted to give them the best chance to get into a | 0:13:30 | 0:13:36
grammar. You hear of other women who have put themselves through | 0:13:36 | 0:13:44
tutoring before the exams. I felt that I had to help him to raise his | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
marks up and to give them the best opportunity of having this tuition | 0:13:47 | 0:13:56
to do well in exams. All more also -- almost all cost... When Martin | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
McGuinness announced he was scrapping the 11-plus, it was | 0:13:59 | 0:14:03
supposed to be the end of test based selection. Instead, we have | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
seen him in an industry grow up around the transfer and the | 0:14:07 | 0:14:11
internet is the place where people sell everything, from past papers | 0:14:11 | 0:14:17
to on lines of resources to tuition. We decide to carry out a pall of | 0:14:17 | 0:14:24
the transfer provided around Northern Ireland. It is about | 0:14:24 | 0:14:28
firms' advertising on the internet. It is a tax transaction that the | 0:14:28 | 0:14:35
taxman does not hear about. A former teacher has been offering | 0:14:35 | 0:14:40
tuition for 22 years. He charges 16 per person and takes the | 0:14:40 | 0:14:45
children in groups. In neighbouring counties, a teacher does not agree | 0:14:45 | 0:14:51
with tuition. He has four primary children on his books. He has been | 0:14:51 | 0:14:56
doing for her a few years and charges 18 a head. He is qualified | 0:14:56 | 0:15:06
0:15:06 | 0:15:20 | ||
but says some parents will collar A couple from England who have just | 0:15:20 | 0:15:29
arrived in Fermanagh, plan to offer tuition there. They have just | 0:15:29 | 0:15:35
started to advertise. Up in Derry, they are less keen to talk about | 0:15:35 | 0:15:42
this. We found a qualified teacher. She has just one child, and says | 0:15:42 | 0:15:47
she has seen fewer children looking for tuition. She charges 20 per | 0:15:47 | 0:15:53
hour. In Antrim, a qualified teacher with 12 years' experience | 0:15:53 | 0:15:59
has around seven children coming to her, some twice a week. She charges | 0:15:59 | 0:16:05
20 per hour and gets annoyed with tutors to guarantee success. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:10
There is no register or regulation of those offering tuition. Much is | 0:16:10 | 0:16:16
done by word of mouth or roadside advertising like this. That means | 0:16:16 | 0:16:22
anyone can offer themselves. We found an A-level student offering | 0:16:22 | 0:16:32
0:16:32 | 0:16:33 | ||
due to turn students for 10 per hour. They have had some interest. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:38
This man is a spokesman for grammar schools that Randy test. He knows | 0:16:38 | 0:16:45
the tuition takes place and says he would prefer if it did not. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:50
We see too much of an overload. With the best motives, but learning | 0:16:50 | 0:16:54
itself becomes a chore and they get turned off at a time when we should | 0:16:54 | 0:17:01
be trying to encourage them. Many parents are still determined to | 0:17:01 | 0:17:06
push for a grammar school education for their children, so while the | 0:17:06 | 0:17:11
entrance test is there, two Russian will be for part of the unregulated | 0:17:11 | 0:17:19
system. -- tuition. The employment and learning | 0:17:19 | 0:17:23
minister Steven Farrer has dealt a body blow for the hopes of higher | 0:17:23 | 0:17:30
education places in Derry. The minister was at the Magee campus | 0:17:30 | 0:17:35
today to deliver the bad news in person. He planned extra 2,000 | 0:17:35 | 0:17:40
places will now be cut to a few hundred. The department says that | 0:17:40 | 0:17:45
financial pressures are to blame. Academics believe that the freeze | 0:17:45 | 0:17:51
on fees here led to this withdrawals. The college staff say | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
that while they are deeply disappointed, their campaign is not | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
over and they aim to keep this on the political agenda. I spoke to a | 0:18:01 | 0:18:06
professor earlier. I am extremely disappointed by this | 0:18:06 | 0:18:11
news. On one hand, I think the minister should be congratulated in | 0:18:11 | 0:18:15
the sense that for the first time there is recognition that we need | 0:18:15 | 0:18:19
to increase the number of undergraduate places available in | 0:18:19 | 0:18:24
Northern Ireland, but the number of places being talked about are | 0:18:24 | 0:18:30
extremely limited and we are very disappointed. You were hoping for | 0:18:30 | 0:18:37
2,000 places and this will not happen. That is correct. The | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
minister says he only has enough money to fund several hundred | 0:18:40 | 0:18:45
places. That is extremely disappointing for us but we are | 0:18:45 | 0:18:51
pushing the minister to ensure that whatever places are on the table, | 0:18:51 | 0:19:01
0:19:01 | 0:19:03 | ||
they come to the Magee campus because we are the only institution | 0:19:03 | 0:19:10
with a pit on the table. Higher education must be a priority for | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
this executive. If we are to rebuild the economy in Northern | 0:19:13 | 0:19:20
Ireland, higher education must be a priority. Many students will now be | 0:19:20 | 0:19:25
choosing to go to university in Northern Ireland rather than | 0:19:25 | 0:19:32
elsewhere, while the tuition fees are frozen. How much of a blow will | 0:19:32 | 0:19:37
thus be to them? There is already huge pressure on | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
places in Northern Ireland. This will increase as students who would | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
otherwise have less Northern Ireland will decide to stay because | 0:19:45 | 0:19:50
of the law to Russian fees. We will see an increase in competition for | 0:19:50 | 0:20:00
0:20:00 | 0:20:04 | ||
places. This campaign is not over. We will work with our partners to | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
ensure that the Magee campus plan does not go off the political | 0:20:08 | 0:20:18
0:20:18 | 0:20:29 | ||
agenda. The Irish rugby coach Declan Kidney | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
has unveiled his team for the weekend's World Cup match. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:39
One player he was unable to select for this crunch game against | 0:20:39 | 0:20:44
Australia was Gerry Flannery. He has picked up an injury in training. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:49
After a disappointing performance in the opening game against the USA, | 0:20:49 | 0:20:55
Declan Kidney has made it four changes. Stephen Ferris, Tom Court | 0:20:55 | 0:21:04
and Rory best retain their places, with Andrew Trimble on the bed. -- | 0:21:04 | 0:21:14

to the bench. Declan Kidney has refreshed the side. He is confident | 0:21:15 | 0:21:20
that the underperforming side can deliver. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:25
The lads who have been left off are very unlucky to have been left off. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:30
I have picked these lads because I think they can play well. I believe | 0:21:30 | 0:21:37
they can give us the result we want. A Ireland have beaten Australia | 0:21:37 | 0:21:42
just twice in the past 10 attempts and never in the World Cup but the | 0:21:42 | 0:21:47
Irish captain is confident of an upset. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:55
As a team, you back yourself on the achievements you have. The medals | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
you have in your pocket. Fresh in their minds will be their victory | 0:21:59 | 0:22:05
in the Tri Nations. We feel that on our day, we are capable of beating | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
anyone, we just have to make sure that performance is up there with | 0:22:10 | 0:22:15
our best, to make sure that we do not allow the Australians to play | 0:22:15 | 0:22:20
and we impose ourselves on them. A win for Ireland is not crucial | 0:22:20 | 0:22:25
this Saturday but it would be an important indicator of their World | 0:22:25 | 0:22:29
Cup ambitions. Over the past few years, we have | 0:22:29 | 0:22:35
followed the progress of this young racing driver, Wayne Boyd. Now aged | 0:22:35 | 0:22:41
20, he is bidding to become an IndyCar Driver. That is the US | 0:22:41 | 0:22:48
equivalent of Formula One. He has just returned home after another | 0:22:48 | 0:22:54
winning performance at the Baltimore Grand Prix. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:59
Wayne Boyd was extremely lucky to escape unharmed after this dramatic | 0:22:59 | 0:23:08
crash. Since, he has won twice in America this year. I am on a | 0:23:08 | 0:23:18
programme, and hopefully I will be there next year. It is a stepping | 0:23:18 | 0:23:26
ladder up their CVs. When he is not where it -- not racing cars, he | 0:23:26 | 0:23:34
works selling parts and working on carts. Formula One is still his | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
dream but America offers the more realistic career progression. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:43
I think Indy car is more bearable. It is so difficult to get into a | 0:23:43 | 0:23:50
Formula One. Indy car, it is the F one of America, but I really do | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
prefer it out there. It is a more relaxed lifestyle and the fans are | 0:23:54 | 0:24:01
great out there as well. He intends to step closer to | 0:24:01 | 0:24:06
IndyCar this coming season. At just 20, he is still on track to make it | 0:24:06 | 0:24:11
to the top of the sport. He is pretty good that the karting | 0:24:11 | 0:24:17
as well. Robin Mackle Roy could mess next year's Irish open because | 0:24:17 | 0:24:27
0:24:27 | 0:24:27 | ||
it clap -- clashes with a big event in the United States. Because of a | 0:24:27 | 0:24:32
new proposed sponsor for the Irish Open, the event could move from its | 0:24:32 | 0:24:37
normal slot, meaning that a La Route De Carteret alloy could then | 0:24:37 | 0:24:44
play. It is two wins out of two for | 0:24:44 | 0:24:54
0:24:54 | 0:24:56 | ||
Northern Ireland in the cricket. Technical difficulties prevented us | 0:24:56 | 0:25:03
from talking to Dr Keith Munro. You will be able to hear him reflecting | 0:25:03 | 0:25:11
on what happened on our late bulletin this evening. And now the | 0:25:11 | 0:25:21
0:25:21 | 0:25:22 | ||
Through the next 24 hours, it is a lot quieter. We went has East as | 0:25:22 | 0:25:32

well. -- the wind has eased. This is something I have never seen, a | 0:25:35 | 0:25:45
0:25:45 | 0:25:52 | ||
lunar rainbow. Pretty impressive. There are actually stars in the sky. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
Fairly clear skies out there at the moment particularly in northern and | 0:25:55 | 0:26:01
central areas. It has taken longer for the cloud to clear away from | 0:26:01 | 0:26:07
the South. Not a bad end to the day for the northern half of Northern | 0:26:07 | 0:26:14
Ireland. It is not likely to stay that way. The cloud in the South | 0:26:14 | 0:26:24
and to the West is set to return. Temperatures are fairly similar to | 0:26:24 | 0:26:31
last night. At around ten degrees. Tomorrow, the emphasis is still on | 0:26:31 | 0:26:37
a lot of dry weather. The cloud could be low enough to bring the | 0:26:37 | 0:26:47
0:26:47 | 0:26:50 | ||
odd patch of mist. But generally it is dried. A lot of cloud, parts of | 0:26:50 | 0:26:57
County Antrim and County Down where daylight suddenly breeze. I am not | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
saying there will not be the odd bright spell in the West but | 0:27:01 | 0:27:07
probably more cloud. Tomorrow will be mostly dry here as well. If you | 0:27:07 | 0:27:12
have to do anything outside, tomorrow is the day. Tomorrow night, | 0:27:12 | 0:27:18
the cloud will gather again bringing spells of rain. By Friday, | 0:27:18 | 0:27:25
it is not looking good. Even when that clears, bright spells and | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
blustery showers fall on Saturday and Sunday looks like the better | 0:27:29 | 0:27:35
day of the weekend. A reminder of the top stories. The | 0:27:35 | 0:27:42
Real IRA is being blamed for bomb attacks in County Londonderry. The | 0:27:42 | 0:27:48
Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliot and his deputy Danny Kennedy are to | 0:27:48 | 0:27:52
place Orange Order disciplinary proceedings for attending the | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55 |
