This is BBC Newsline. The headlines: public sector workers | :00:20. | :00:24.
face a big hike in their pension contributions. | :00:24. | :00:28.
1,000 to have hospital appointments are cancelled because of a 24 hour | :00:28. | :00:35.
strike. construction fund is fined over | :00:35. | :00:37.
this man's death. Recalled for an increase in our | :00:37. | :00:41.
gold prices to stop been drinking among children. | :00:41. | :00:47.
Recreating the grandeur of the Titanic in a workshop. We have a | :00:47. | :00:52.
special report from New Zealand on island's big push to beat Wales. | :00:52. | :00:57.
As an today may have been wet and windy but at least it is mild. That | :00:57. | :01:06.
is all about to change. Public sector workers face the | :01:06. | :01:09.
height of about a third in their pension contributions. The | :01:09. | :01:14.
Executive has agreed the rise, the Treasury said it would make big | :01:14. | :01:19.
cuts to the Stormont budget if it did not. Scotland has refused to | :01:19. | :01:26.
obey the directive. We have exclusive details. Why has the | :01:26. | :01:33.
Executive agree to this hike? no secret that London wanted public | :01:33. | :01:38.
sector workers to pay 3.2 % more towards their pension contributions | :01:38. | :01:42.
and trade unions have been negotiating over the issue. | :01:42. | :01:47.
Stormont wanted to defer these hikes because public sector workers | :01:47. | :01:55.
are facing freezes, but they got this letter last month warning them | :01:55. | :02:00.
of start cuts in the Budget if they did not agree. In the one, the cuts | :02:00. | :02:09.
would be more than 50 million from the grant. In year two, the rise of | :02:09. | :02:17.
would beat 90 million. There was not unanimous agreement on going | :02:17. | :02:27.
ahead with the rise, was there? I am told by my sources that the | :02:27. | :02:30.
environment minister objected to the Executive agreeing to these | :02:30. | :02:35.
changes and writing a letter to the Treasury to that effect. Other | :02:35. | :02:42.
ministers agreed, Alex Attwood said, why is Stormont doing this? The | :02:42. | :02:46.
Scottish finance minister is objecting. The first minister went | :02:46. | :02:51.
public with a letter and read it in the Scottish Parliament. Our | :02:51. | :02:57.
ministers discussed it behind closed doors. Samuelson, I asked | :02:57. | :03:07.
him if he was rolling over and he said, no. There is no other option | :03:07. | :03:13.
other than to either have the increase or to cut public services. | :03:13. | :03:19.
That is a choice people have to make. People can jump up and down | :03:19. | :03:24.
about it, they can read letters out, they can protest but at the end of | :03:24. | :03:29.
the day they have a simple choice - you either accept what is happening | :03:29. | :03:35.
for all public services across the UK or you cut public services. | :03:35. | :03:39.
Public pension reform is already threatening mass industrial action | :03:39. | :03:44.
in the months ahead. How will record unions react to this | :03:44. | :03:51.
increase? As you say, trade unions who represent public sector workers | :03:51. | :03:56.
are about to ballot over pension issues and other work conditions. | :03:56. | :03:59.
They are not happy, they are threatening what could be the | :03:59. | :04:04.
largest date of industrial action in Northern Ireland's history next | :04:04. | :04:09.
month and I spoke to the Irish, S about what is developing instalment | :04:10. | :04:14.
and he says what this letter showed his the negotiations they have been | :04:14. | :04:21.
having in London are a farce. There was industrial action today | :04:21. | :04:25.
by some of those employees. It meant the postponement of thousands | :04:26. | :04:29.
of hospital appointments. The Health Minister says the backlog | :04:29. | :04:34.
will take weeks to clear. He has called the strike affordable and a | :04:34. | :04:38.
necessary but the striking Unison members say it is the only way to | :04:38. | :04:43.
put the issue of budget cuts under the spotlight. Health and education | :04:43. | :04:53.
:04:53. | :04:53. | ||
workers took part in the walkout. This is the largest picket that has | :04:53. | :04:57.
been held in Northern Ireland today and as you can see, people are | :04:57. | :05:02.
gathered outside the gates. They are porters, nurses, catering staff | :05:02. | :05:06.
and they say they will try to stick it out and tell their strike ends | :05:06. | :05:11.
at midnight. They are getting support from passing motorist but | :05:11. | :05:15.
there has been a lot of disruption and the Health Minister says it | :05:15. | :05:22.
could take weeks to clear that backlog. The Trust estimate that | :05:22. | :05:25.
2,500 appointments were council today. | :05:25. | :05:29.
Hospital staff on the streets rather than on the wards. Doctors | :05:29. | :05:33.
and nurses and the majority were not involved but the Belfast Trust | :05:33. | :05:37.
was the worst affected with some 1,300 appointments cancelled. But | :05:38. | :05:43.
those on the picket line say they had no other choice. My big fear is | :05:43. | :05:47.
bed closures, which lead to job cuts but the people here that are | :05:47. | :05:52.
losing money but the pay freeze, the shops and will suffer, the | :05:52. | :06:00.
whole community will suffer. Emergency staff were not on strike | :06:00. | :06:06.
but some procedures, clinics and surgeries were cancelled forcing | :06:06. | :06:15.
patients back on waiting lists. People who work -- will have to | :06:15. | :06:20.
wait a number of weeks before the situations can be replaced. | :06:20. | :06:24.
Surgeries will be delayed and that has a knock-on effect for thousands | :06:24. | :06:32.
of people. The Union says it is disappointed with the minister's | :06:32. | :06:35.
stance and here in Londonderry, health workers believe the Budget | :06:35. | :06:40.
will bring hospitals to then needs. This government will cut the health | :06:40. | :06:45.
service to the bone and less we fight to stop it. We are here for | :06:45. | :06:51.
the good of the public's health. Patras had 350 cancellations today | :06:51. | :06:56.
but it was not just health service staff. UNISON members who work in | :06:56. | :07:00.
education were also on strike, forcing two nurseries in the area | :07:00. | :07:04.
to close and affecting other schools. We felt really bad. We did | :07:04. | :07:08.
not do this might be because we knew children would have to stay at | :07:08. | :07:13.
home but parents are giving us 100 % support. There was support for | :07:13. | :07:18.
the workers in County Antrim and County Down but in this picket | :07:18. | :07:24.
outside Ulster Hospital's there was anger at the low turnout. People | :07:24. | :07:29.
have a lot to answer for. People they should have been here are not. | :07:29. | :07:34.
We are making a protest for everyone. There was a better | :07:34. | :07:38.
turnout here with workers making a very grim prognosis about the | :07:38. | :07:44.
future of the health service. Some anger that the low turnout at | :07:44. | :07:48.
the Ulster Hospital but that has not been a problem here, despite | :07:49. | :07:53.
the heavy rain. However, the Trust says they will not know until | :07:53. | :07:57.
tomorrow how many of their staff took part in the strike and how | :07:57. | :08:04.
many patients were affected by it. A 19-year-old has been jailed for | :08:04. | :08:08.
life for beating to death a father of aid as he walked home from a | :08:08. | :08:13.
club in Belfast last year. Seamus Fox was found with serious head | :08:14. | :08:18.
injuries last April. Today Gerard Connors from Glenveagh Drive | :08:18. | :08:22.
pleaded guilty to the murder. His barrister said he wanted to | :08:22. | :08:25.
apologise openly for the tragic outcome and to offer his | :08:25. | :08:30.
condolences for what had happened. It is a sign our economy is weak | :08:30. | :08:34.
when you hear that Invest NI his job is to support investment has | :08:34. | :08:42.
not been able to spend all of its budget. It is handing back 17,500 | :08:42. | :08:46.
of its grant aid to Stormont because the companies earmarked for | :08:46. | :08:50.
the money are not investing. They have been calls for that underspend | :08:50. | :08:58.
to be handed to smaller businesses. 330 new jobs announced that the | :08:58. | :09:01.
outsourcing firm in Belfast last month but in the same week as this | :09:02. | :09:09.
announcement, the minister was preparing to return a 17.5 million | :09:09. | :09:13.
of Invest NI's budget because it is money it cannot spend. Invest NI | :09:13. | :09:19.
says this is the result of falling business confidence which is | :09:19. | :09:24.
affecting business firms decisions. How has this arisen? Companies that | :09:24. | :09:27.
qualify for grants from Invest NI have to meet certain Investment | :09:27. | :09:32.
timetables to get the money. If their plans slow down because of | :09:32. | :09:37.
the overall economic climate, less money is handed out and a surplus | :09:37. | :09:42.
if team-mates. It is that arms and money that has to be returned. The | :09:42. | :09:45.
first minister Peter Robinson says some of the uncertainty is still | :09:45. | :09:51.
being caused by the banks. worrying aspect is that in many | :09:51. | :09:55.
cases the money is being handed back because while we had a | :09:55. | :09:58.
contribution which we were ready to make towards the expansion of | :09:58. | :10:06.
businesses, the businesses could not get funds from the banks. That | :10:06. | :10:10.
is disappointing. At this small business park in north Belfast, | :10:10. | :10:14.
there was annoyance that some of the money cannot be diverted to | :10:14. | :10:19.
assist small local businesses. is very tough out there. There is | :10:19. | :10:24.
not the same amount of money available as they used to be. | :10:24. | :10:29.
Grants for the majority of business start-ups were removed and with the | :10:29. | :10:33.
current demise of the banks, it is getting harder and harder to get | :10:33. | :10:37.
the money together for stop politicians would like to see a | :10:37. | :10:41.
more flexible approach to spending within government departments. | :10:41. | :10:45.
Treasury rules are such that you cannot spend the money within a | :10:46. | :10:51.
year, then it has to go back. I would like to see that money rolled | :10:51. | :10:56.
over and used productively. Some of the money from Invest NI is being | :10:56. | :11:00.
reassigned to tourism projects. The enterprise is expected to discuss | :11:00. | :11:07.
the issue tomorrow. And Northern Ireland Bolton fan has | :11:07. | :11:12.
been fined 75,000 for health and safety breaches which led to the | :11:12. | :11:16.
death of one of its workers. An architect employed by Henry | :11:16. | :11:22.
Brothers was also fined. The dead man's family said the case had | :11:22. | :11:26.
given their closure. The company says it placed the utmost priority | :11:26. | :11:31.
on the health and safety of employees. | :11:31. | :11:35.
This is 62-year-old father of four, Desmond Stevenson. He died from | :11:35. | :11:43.
chest injuries after her roof fell on him in September 2006. He was a | :11:43. | :11:49.
joiner employed by Henry Brothers. Today his family was in court to | :11:49. | :11:55.
see the construction company fined 75,000. Four two breaches of | :11:55. | :12:00.
health and safety legislation. An architect employed at the time, | :12:00. | :12:06.
Anthoney Stewart, he on the right, was also fined 5,000. The court | :12:06. | :12:13.
heard that the firm had secured a 7,500 contract at the base. Mr | :12:13. | :12:17.
Stevens had only been onside for just over a week when a | :12:17. | :12:21.
prefabricated building collapsed on top of him. He died from severe | :12:22. | :12:26.
crushing injuries. The judge said that it was a serious breach of | :12:26. | :12:30.
health and safety and that she found it difficult to comprehend | :12:30. | :12:35.
how no one understood the risk of collapse. She said she had some | :12:35. | :12:39.
sympathy with Henry Brothers as no experts had brought this to their | :12:39. | :12:42.
attention but added that the accident could have been avoided. | :12:42. | :12:46.
The court heard that while the construction company had accepted | :12:46. | :12:52.
their gills, Mr Stewart had found it hard to come to terms with his | :12:52. | :12:57.
responsibility as project manager. However, the judge said she | :12:57. | :12:59.
accepted his degree of responsibility was much lower than | :12:59. | :13:03.
others who had been on site but who had not been brought before the | :13:03. | :13:07.
court. Outside court, the Health and Safety Executive said there | :13:08. | :13:14.
were lessons to be learned. Designers have responsibility, | :13:14. | :13:18.
architects have responsibility and the responsibility is that of the | :13:18. | :13:23.
Contractor onside. Designers and architects have a responsibility to | :13:23. | :13:28.
ensure what is happening on side is that of plans. Mr Stewart has a | :13:28. | :13:37.
year to pay his fine. Still to come on the programme: is | :13:37. | :13:42.
it the end of the line for this phone box in a brawl Tyrone. I am | :13:42. | :13:47.
in Wellington with the Ireland rugby team. It is now crunch time | :13:47. | :13:57.
:13:57. | :13:57. | ||
With children as young as 11 now drinking, the Public Health Agency | :13:57. | :14:02.
is calling for the price of alcohol to be increased. A survey for a | :14:02. | :14:04.
health awareness group in Londonderry has recorded excessive | :14:04. | :14:08.
drinking among children between 12 and 17. Half of those questioned | :14:08. | :14:10.
said they preferred strong alcoholic drinks like vodka. As | :14:10. | :14:20.
:14:20. | :14:23. | ||
Keiron Tourish reports, a culture of excess is difficult to change. | :14:23. | :14:27.
It's a night of huge celebration in Derry with thousands taking to the | :14:27. | :14:34.
streets to enjoy the festivities. But, while most people go out and | :14:34. | :14:37.
have a good night, many young people are taking alcohol for the | :14:37. | :14:42.
first time. Students say that drink is easily accessible to miners, and | :14:42. | :14:47.
in some cases, it is very cheap. The cost of drink is far too low. | :14:47. | :14:53.
It is pocket money. It is what your mum gives you to go out to the shop. | :14:53. | :15:01.
Any children, especially age of 11 or 12, can afford to get drunk. | :15:01. | :15:06.
three-litre bottle of cider for one pound 50. That is something like 7%. | :15:06. | :15:13.
That is quite a lot of alcohol. It is very dangerous. There are girls | :15:13. | :15:21.
putting themselves in bad situations, men getting into fights. | :15:21. | :15:24.
Can women drink as much as men? This conference hopes to highlight | :15:24. | :15:29.
the dangers of alcohol to young people. In a specially commissioned | :15:29. | :15:33.
research earlier this year, organisers asked 1000 children | :15:33. | :15:42.
between 12 and 17 about their drinking habits. 500 out of 1000 | :15:42. | :15:46.
were drinking at least once a week, the equivalent to half a bottle of | :15:46. | :15:52.
vodka and a few bottles of beer in one sitting, which is a lot of | :15:52. | :15:55.
alcohol for one young person. Betters from as young as 12 years | :15:55. | :15:58.
of age. For those in the industry, there is a clear admission that a | :15:58. | :16:07.
lot of people drink to excess. regulatory aspects of Park is for a | :16:07. | :16:11.
landlord PCS you have had too much to send you home. That is no longer | :16:11. | :16:14.
available because people are drinking in the house so there is | :16:14. | :16:19.
no restriction on what they can drink. When it is this cheap, | :16:19. | :16:22.
people to drink more. There is room for legislation to increase the | :16:22. | :16:28.
basic unit price of Algol. It is not the solution, but it is an | :16:28. | :16:32.
important element. Alcohol is far too cheap and far too accessible. | :16:32. | :16:35.
The organisers say the challenge is to everyone to make a positive | :16:35. | :16:39.
difference when it comes to excessive drinking. | :16:39. | :16:42.
Red phone boxes used to be a familiar sight in towns and | :16:42. | :16:46.
countryside alike. Most have now been replaced by the new glass | :16:46. | :16:50.
boxes or taken away altogether. BT says a phone box in rural Tyrone | :16:50. | :16:55.
may be removed if it is not needed. As Louise Cullen reports, the local | :16:55. | :17:01.
community thinks it's a lifeline worth fighting for. | :17:01. | :17:06.
A few days ago, this phone box was operational. They did not take | :17:06. | :17:10.
coins, due needed a phone card, but in an area with poor mobile phone | :17:10. | :17:13.
coverage, if you were in an emergency situation you had access | :17:13. | :17:19.
to some kind of lifeline. But, this morning, I have arrived here and | :17:19. | :17:26.
there is no line. I tried to use the phone a month ago. There were | :17:26. | :17:33.
no coins so I could not use it, but I definitely -- desperately needed | :17:33. | :17:41.
to phone home. In a statement, BT said the phone has generated less | :17:41. | :17:48.
than 10 in the past year. Be Road Service asked for it to be removed | :17:48. | :17:55.
as it was interfering with traffic sidelines on the road. It was | :17:55. | :17:59.
probably not being used enough for them to maintain it, but at the | :17:59. | :18:03.
same time, it is a rural area and it is important that people have a | :18:03. | :18:08.
way of contact if they are in trouble. There is plenty of | :18:08. | :18:13.
evidence to suggest the box has not been used much. Cobwebs in every | :18:13. | :18:17.
corner, the flaking paint, but some say that is not the point. If BT | :18:17. | :18:24.
can assure us that there will be mobile communication Road, which is | :18:24. | :18:29.
a very busy stretch of road, well and good. But until then, don't | :18:29. | :18:34.
even consider removing what is a lifeline. In the nearby Victoria | :18:34. | :18:40.
Bridge people were resigned. It is not that important to have a phone | :18:40. | :18:45.
box nowadays anyway. I have got a mobile phone. It should be left | :18:45. | :18:50.
there. It is nice to see them. There are not many left now. | :18:50. | :18:54.
electricity connection has also been removed. The once familiar red | :18:54. | :19:01.
box is likely to follow soon. The most famous ship which ever | :19:01. | :19:05.
sailed from Belfast had a very famous set of steps inside. Anyone | :19:05. | :19:08.
who's seen a movie about the Titanic will remember the scenes | :19:08. | :19:11.
around the grand staircase. Now, local joiners are building a | :19:11. | :19:15.
replica for the new Titanic visitors' centre in Belfast. Chris | :19:15. | :19:17.
Page's report begins with exclusive pictures of the wreck on the | :19:17. | :19:20.
Atlantic seabed filmed by BBC Newsline's Mike McKimm six years | :19:20. | :19:30.
:19:30. | :19:33. | ||
ago. In front is a huge gaping chasm. As | :19:33. | :19:38.
we gazed down into Titanic's DAX, we realise this is where the grand | :19:38. | :19:47.
staircase once stood. The sum just staircase has come to symbolise the | :19:47. | :19:53.
splendour of the Titanic. Now it is being re created at this workshop. | :19:53. | :19:58.
The replica will be a four-ton a masterpiece of craftsmanship. If | :19:59. | :20:01.
you are wondering what colour the staircase will be when it is | :20:01. | :20:05.
finished, this is the answer. Even at this stage of the project, what | :20:06. | :20:13.
strikes you most is the attention to detail. The staircase will be | :20:13. | :20:18.
made up of 10,000 parts - a meticulous job for the joiners. | :20:18. | :20:27.
Take this panelling. There is four weeks were just in this piece here. | :20:27. | :20:31.
At this curve, you have to make them by hand. Machinery cannot do | :20:31. | :20:36.
that. It takes a lot of time. such a thorough work is the only | :20:36. | :20:42.
way to recapture the intricate design. Thousands of people will | :20:42. | :20:46.
see the finished project. It is going to be put into the banqueting | :20:46. | :20:50.
suite at the Titanic visitors' centre in Belfast. For the family | :20:50. | :20:56.
firm, it is an exciting but daunting task. A bit of shock, I | :20:56. | :21:04.
think. It is a big job to tackle, but when you get going it is not so | :21:04. | :21:09.
bad. When it is finished, the grand staircase will get a grand entrance. | :21:09. | :21:13.
A crane will lift it through the roof of the visitor's centre six | :21:13. | :21:16.
storeys up. It will be a dramatic sight and it will happen in the | :21:16. | :21:23.
next few months. A big job. I would like to see it | :21:23. | :21:27.
once it is in place. Now, the big question of the day. Will Ulster's | :21:27. | :21:29.
Rory Best be fit to play as Ireland's hooker in Saturday's | :21:29. | :21:32.
Rugby World Cup quarter-final in New Zealand? We thought after | :21:32. | :21:37.
injury in the last game he would be out. Austin O'Callaghan is here. | :21:37. | :21:41.
What's happening? They are keeping us and Wales | :21:41. | :21:49.
guessing. That's what's been happening. 48 hours ago all the | :21:49. | :21:52.
indications were that Rory Best would not play in Saturday's | :21:52. | :21:56.
quarter-final due to a serious shoulder injury. But he is in | :21:56. | :21:59.
training earlier today, so your guess is as good as mine. The | :21:59. | :22:04.
Ulsterman has been named in an unchanged line-up for Saturday's | :22:05. | :22:09.
match. This is Wellington. It is wet and wild. It is meant the | :22:09. | :22:13.
springtime here, but it feels more like an autumn day back at him. | :22:13. | :22:17.
That should help the island team. New Zealand's capital is a small | :22:17. | :22:23.
city. There are only 300,000 people here. They expect 70,000 fans for | :22:23. | :22:26.
the quarter finals this weekend, and they are the ones with tickets. | :22:26. | :22:30.
It seemed quite on the streets today, but there is a buzz growing | :22:30. | :22:34.
around this Irish team. In this part of the world, rugby players | :22:34. | :22:39.
are movie stars, and the World Cup is their biggest stage. So far, | :22:39. | :22:42.
Ireland's performances have made everyone sit up and take notice. | :22:42. | :22:46.
But, for these experienced campaigners, it was business as | :22:46. | :22:50.
usual four or their training. Nothing out of the ordinary, and | :22:50. | :22:57.
some promising news on the injury front. Rory Best has made great | :22:57. | :23:02.
progress since Sunday. In a tournament football you have to | :23:02. | :23:05.
take each day as it comes, and he has made nothing but progress since | :23:05. | :23:13.
Sunday. If he keeps going this way, he has a chance. It was | :23:13. | :23:17.
disappointing in 2007, but it would be great to have Rory in there. He | :23:17. | :23:19.
has put in some magnificent performances over the last few | :23:20. | :23:29.
:23:30. | :23:33. | ||
weeks. He adds a bit of experience, too. New Zealander Paul has won | :23:33. | :23:41.
over 100 Ulster caps and rates this Irish side. They are looking pretty | :23:41. | :23:45.
healthy coming into this game against Wales. I give them every | :23:45. | :23:49.
chance of winning. And from the time you were at Ulster, some of | :23:49. | :23:52.
the young guys have matured into world class players, haven't they? | :23:52. | :23:57.
Yes, they have. The likes of Stephen Ferris and Rory. Those to | :23:57. | :24:02.
have been fabulous, I think. They are an integral part of the Irish | :24:02. | :24:09.
team, so I hope they can both stay fit, or as fit as can be, leading | :24:09. | :24:14.
forward. Now it is up to the players. If it came to Ireland and | :24:14. | :24:18.
New Zealand in the final, we do have split loyalties? Absolutely, | :24:18. | :24:23.
but I would be a winner either way. Very diplomatic, but in this World | :24:23. | :24:27.
Cup, anything is possible. And you can follow Gavin's rugby | :24:27. | :24:30.
World Cup diary on our BBC News online website as he meets the | :24:30. | :24:40.
:24:40. | :24:42. | ||
players and fans on his camper fan tour Down Under. | :24:42. | :24:45.
Nigel Worthington is hoping to draft Shane Ferguson in as cover | :24:45. | :24:47.
for the injured Jonny Evans for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifiers | :24:47. | :24:53.
against Estonia. The Newcastle defender has been linked in the | :24:53. | :25:01.
past with a move to the Republic of Ireland. Thomas Niblock reports. | :25:01. | :25:04.
Celtic's Paddy McWatt trained with the Northern Ireland squad this | :25:04. | :25:14.
:25:14. | :25:14. | ||
morning. So, do, did a Rangers, Lafferty. However, definitely out | :25:14. | :25:21.
of both games is the injured Jonny Evans. He won't be here. He has had | :25:21. | :25:29.
this ongoing ankle problem. He did play at the weekend, but the | :25:29. | :25:33.
feeling with his club is that he does need rest and recuperation, so | :25:33. | :25:39.
we accept that and move on. Worthington hopes taking his place | :25:39. | :25:42.
will be Shane Ferguson. After making a substitute appearance two | :25:42. | :25:47.
years ago, Ferguson was considering his international options and | :25:47. | :25:49.
Worthington figured the Newcastle defender may opt for the Republic. | :25:49. | :25:54.
However, Ferguson played in an Under 21 game for Northern Ireland | :25:54. | :25:58.
in August and Worthington is hopeful he may now link-up with the | :25:58. | :26:02.
rest of the senior squad. Shane had a reserve game last night with | :26:02. | :26:06.
Newcastle, so we are hoping to get in contact with him. We have been | :26:06. | :26:09.
tried to get in contact with him. Through the game, hopefully there | :26:09. | :26:15.
will be to medication this morning. The IFA were unable to confirm or | :26:15. | :26:18.
deny whether Ferguson will be linking up with the squad, but what | :26:18. | :26:22.
is certain is that if Northern Ireland don't win on Friday night, | :26:22. | :26:26.
the dream of Euro 2012 qualification is over. | :26:26. | :26:29.
The Republic have arrived in Andorra for their Group B qualifier | :26:29. | :26:39.
:26:39. | :26:39. | ||
on Friday. They are currently training in Barcelona. They could | :26:39. | :26:42.
yet qualify automatically for Euro 2012 if they win their remaining | :26:42. | :26:45.
two matches. The Andorrans are bottom of FIFA's world rankings, | :26:45. | :26:50.
but the Republic will be treading warily none the less. | :26:50. | :26:54.
They have come on a lot in the last couple of years so it will be a | :26:54. | :26:58.
difficult game. They can be a handful. We have got to be really | :26:58. | :27:03.
focused on our job. Sometimes you can only have so many people behind | :27:03. | :27:09.
the ball and we have got to the patient. Hopefully we can create | :27:09. | :27:11.
chances and take them when they come along. | :27:11. | :27:13.
There was disappointment for Belfast amateur boxer Michael | :27:13. | :27:16.
Conlon at the World Championships in Azerbaijan. He lost his | :27:16. | :27:19.
flyweight quarter-final to Andrew Selby of Wales by a single point, | :27:19. | :27:23.
even though the judges awarded him to of the fight's three rounds. But, | :27:23. | :27:27.
despite missing out on a medal here, Conlon is already assured of a | :27:27. | :27:35.
place at next summer's London Olympics. Not bad for a 19-year- | :27:35. | :27:43.
Well, it is going to get much colder later on tonight. If you did | :27:43. | :27:47.
not like today's weather, wet and windy, you won't like tomorrow's | :27:47. | :27:50.
either. And the difference tomorrow is that temperatures will be a fair | :27:50. | :27:56.
bit lower. That tropical air is sliding away. Blues are flooding | :27:56. | :28:00.
down all the way from the Arctic, so much colder tomorrow with | :28:00. | :28:04.
temperatures in most places a good five degrees down on what they were | :28:04. | :28:09.
today. The colder air starting to move in now and it will continue to | :28:09. | :28:12.
get hold of receiving and overnight. The winds are easing at the moment, | :28:12. | :28:18.
but they will pick up overnight with renewed gales along the coast. | :28:18. | :28:21.
Seven degrees in most places and a fair few showers coming along in | :28:21. | :28:25.
that breeze as well. The wind will be stronger tomorrow than today, | :28:25. | :28:29.
with a warning issued by the Met Office. We could possibly have | :28:29. | :28:33.
disruption to travel with gusts up to 60 mph, particularly in exposed | :28:33. | :28:37.
areas. Coupled with a drop in temperature, it may even feel a bit | :28:37. | :28:42.
wintry. Lot of showers in the morning on those gale-force | :28:42. | :28:46.
westerly winds. Some of them heavy, merging to give a longer spell of | :28:46. | :28:50.
rain around the middle part of the day. Hail and thunder is quite | :28:50. | :28:54.
possible, too. With the heavy showers, strong winds and low | :28:54. | :28:57.
temperatures, it really is going to feel quite miserable. Some | :28:57. | :29:00.
brightness in between, say there will be a bit of sunshine here and | :29:00. | :29:06.
there. But it is going to feel cold. The Prince will peak mid-afternoon | :29:06. | :29:13.
onwards with gusts up to 60 mph. Some disruption to the ferry is | :29:13. | :29:18.
almost certain. Eventually the winds will ease later in the night. | :29:18. | :29:23.
So, a little better on Friday. Temperatures coming up a little bit. | :29:23. | :29:29. |
