Welcome to BBC Newsline with Donna Traynor. The headlines this

:00:16.:00:26.
:00:26.:00:27.

evening: He's back on top of the world - Rory gets his second major.

:00:27.:00:33.

I am live at Holywood Golf Club with all the reaction to Rory's

:00:33.:00:38.

record-breaking success. The boys are back in town and BBC

:00:38.:00:44.

Newsline is live at our Olympic medallists for the homecoming.

:00:44.:00:47.

A scathing report finds a culture of fear and mistrust in the Fire

:00:47.:00:56.

Service. It is back to normal - more

:00:56.:01:02.

unsettled weather coming this week. I'll have the forecast later.

:01:02.:01:05.

Hot on the heels of Northern Ireland's best ever medal tally at

:01:05.:01:07.

the Olympics, we're celebrating another home-grown success with

:01:07.:01:11.

Rory McIlroy. The 23 year-old from Holywood won the USPGA tournament,

:01:11.:01:17.

one of the sport's four majors and it was by a record-breaking margin.

:01:17.:01:27.
:01:27.:01:27.

Stephen Watson is in Holywood for While any of us were watching the

:01:28.:01:31.

closing ceremony of the Olympics, this success there Rory McIlory

:01:31.:01:38.

caught us off guard last night? Absolutely. Apart from last hardy

:01:38.:01:42.

golf fans and everyone here at Holywood Golf Club, it seemed the

:01:42.:01:47.

world was good to the Spice girls and the final celebrations of the

:01:47.:01:50.

Olympians in London but many of us could not take her eyes of what was

:01:50.:01:55.

happening across the Atlantic at the golf course in South Carolina.

:01:55.:02:02.

Rory McIlory turned in a come cutely incredible performance. He

:02:02.:02:09.

lifted the famous trophy. He returned to Number One in the world.

:02:09.:02:14.

He secured his second major championship in emphatic style.

:02:15.:02:21.

Here is how he did it. Yet another winner's trophy for the

:02:21.:02:31.
:02:31.:02:46.

Holywood golfer who has become a global sports star. Rory McIlory

:02:46.:02:53.

was simply untouchable in South Carolina. It dropped in and it was

:02:53.:02:58.

the perfect way to end the perfect day. Something just felt right. I

:02:58.:03:02.

came here, got to my locker room and looked at the window and

:03:02.:03:06.

thought, I like the feel of this place. I got onto the course and I

:03:06.:03:11.

liked what I saw, I loved greens and I thought it was some of the

:03:11.:03:18.

best services we have putted on. Everything just worked out. Rory

:03:18.:03:28.
:03:28.:03:33.

McIlory made the game look easy. Holding the lead going into the

:03:33.:03:38.

final round, he hit six birdies to pull away from the rest of faint.

:03:38.:03:44.

He showed why he is the best golfer in the world. All I wanted to do

:03:44.:03:48.

was to go and and win the tournament and getting back to the

:03:48.:03:53.

world's number one was just a bonus. Being able to speak to Caroline and

:03:53.:03:57.

my mum back home as well and speak to the people that are very

:03:57.:04:03.

important to you, it is just great to be able to share this with them.

:04:03.:04:08.

He has made a seamless transition from a young prospect to major

:04:08.:04:12.

winner and is now being tipped to become one of golf's all-time

:04:12.:04:18.

greats. I never set out to try and set targets for myself or or decide

:04:19.:04:22.

how many tournaments I wanted to win but to get two tournaments so

:04:22.:04:27.

early on in my career is a huge achievement and it just makes you

:04:27.:04:32.

even hungrier to get more and do the best I can. I realise I am a

:04:32.:04:36.

role model and every time I am on a TV screen or playing on the golf

:04:36.:04:41.

course, I want to set a good example for people to look up to me.

:04:41.:04:45.

I hopefully do that the the most part. Sometimes I don't but mostly

:04:45.:04:51.

I try to do that and continue to try to do that. An extraordinary

:04:51.:04:57.

talent with maturity to match - at 23, the sky is the limit for Rory

:04:57.:05:02.

McIlory. Here at Holywood, people

:05:03.:05:06.

celebrating Rory's victory into the early hours. This is the club where

:05:06.:05:09.

his talent was first spotted and everyone is immensely proud of his

:05:09.:05:19.
:05:19.:05:20.

latest achievement. To those who have known him all his

:05:20.:05:23.

life, it cannot be much of a surprise that this 10 year-old boy

:05:23.:05:28.

has become the best golfer in the world. Even at this age, he was

:05:28.:05:32.

hitting shots which were the envy of adults. The man who organises

:05:32.:05:37.

events for under 18 supper-club says Rory McIlory stood out. He was

:05:37.:05:44.

always very enthusiastic and very visible here at Holywood. I

:05:44.:05:50.

remember on the 18th fairway, watching him one afternoon, it was

:05:50.:05:54.

raining and the clubs in the bag were taller than him and he just

:05:54.:05:59.

loved it. That a dedication helped him win dozens of cups and

:05:59.:06:04.

championships as a teenager. At the international media noticed his

:06:04.:06:08.

exceptional promise. Those now famous pictures of our young Rory

:06:08.:06:11.

McIlory playing on this course and his amazing success since have had

:06:12.:06:16.

a big effect on the next generation of golfers who are being inspired

:06:16.:06:22.

to be the best they can be. He is amazing and I am really proud of

:06:22.:06:26.

him and he is a good inspiration for everybody will stop it is

:06:26.:06:33.

incredible, to win by eight shots is just incredible. Every time they

:06:33.:06:36.

go into the clubhouse, they are reminded of his achievements. Now

:06:36.:06:41.

the club will no doubt find space here to mark his second major win.

:06:41.:06:45.

Hollywood is making the most of being the home of one of the best

:06:45.:06:49.

known sports people on the planet. In this part of the world, you know

:06:49.:06:58.

you have done something special when you appear on a cake.

:06:58.:07:03.

Joining the is the general manager of Holywood Golf Club. A everyone

:07:03.:07:09.

keeps asking me today, is there an official homecoming this week, is

:07:09.:07:14.

to bring the trophy here? He is based out in America and he will

:07:14.:07:21.

probably stay at their. We're not expecting him home. Hope fully

:07:21.:07:25.

before Christmas, you may get the trophy Ikea to let everyone see.

:07:25.:07:34.

That would be fantastic. I know he was here a few weeks ago giving a

:07:34.:07:38.

golfer Nick clinic to all the young people here. It is a club which is

:07:38.:07:42.

still dear to his heart and he wanted to give a lot back. Yes he

:07:42.:07:46.

came a few weeks ago and did a golf clinic and had a corporate day here.

:07:46.:07:52.

He does continually support us and he has not tried to lose his

:07:52.:07:56.

connection with us. We're very proud of him. He doesn't just win

:07:56.:08:00.

majors, he winds them in record- breaking style - how impressed

:08:00.:08:04.

where were you with his performance? That is the second

:08:04.:08:08.

major he has won by eight shots. Guys struggle to win it and that

:08:08.:08:12.

says a lot about what he can do going forward and how many majors

:08:12.:08:16.

he can win. He has proved he can win more and when he can win them

:08:16.:08:21.

by eight shots, who knows how many more? He took a lot of criticism

:08:21.:08:25.

this year when he missed four cuts under five, especially defending

:08:25.:08:29.

the US Championship, does this might prove that people were harsh

:08:29.:08:35.

in judging him too early? He is only 23 years old and only five

:08:35.:08:40.

weeks ago he missed four cuts in a row. We were hearing all sorts of

:08:40.:08:44.

things, that he needed to change his coach or caddie, get rid of his

:08:44.:08:49.

girlfriend! You heard all sorts of stuff from experts but luckily he

:08:49.:08:53.

has the sense and majority not to listen to them. He takes his own

:08:54.:08:57.

counsel and has proved them all wrong and it is great. You have

:08:57.:09:06.

known him a long time for. He used to come in when he was playing here

:09:06.:09:11.

and he would be chopping -- chatting to me in between rounds.

:09:11.:09:21.
:09:21.:09:23.

He used to love the scorecards of my counter and he would fill in the

:09:23.:09:26.

scorecards of incredible scores and then he would sign his name in the

:09:26.:09:32.

players' box and in the market was matchbox he would write Nick Faldo

:09:32.:09:39.

or Tiger Woods! Isn't it fantastic for the last

:09:39.:09:48.

three years, Northern Ireland has had a major golfing champion!

:09:48.:09:53.

You have just returned from London and use of Paddy Barnes and Michael

:09:53.:09:57.

Conlon get their medals, now you have come home and are reporting on

:09:57.:10:01.

more golfing success. Can you sum up for asked what this really means

:10:01.:10:09.

for local sport? I fully expected to be standing one lysed time in

:10:09.:10:13.

our studio outside the Olympic Park tonight, reflecting on what was a

:10:13.:10:20.

magical Olympic Games and a special one for Northern Ireland. Bringing

:10:20.:10:24.

five medals home. We will talk to a couple of our boxers later in the

:10:24.:10:27.

programme. The Coleraine rowers will have a homecoming on Wednesday

:10:27.:10:37.
:10:37.:10:39.

but to top off, probably the best weeks in sport, just to remind us

:10:39.:10:43.

of how many top sportsmen and women be had in Northern Ireland.

:10:43.:10:48.

Remember, golf is being included in the Olympics in Rio in four years'

:10:48.:10:53.

time so we could have a couple of Olympic golf medallists as well.

:10:53.:10:56.

Still to come on the programme: A scathing report finds a culture of

:10:56.:10:59.

fear and mistrust in the Fire Serivce.

:10:59.:11:09.
:11:09.:11:11.

How are we paying for our summer holidays this year?

:11:11.:11:14.

A scathing internal review of the Fire and Rescue Service has found

:11:14.:11:18.

that staff are working in a culture of fear and mistrust. The review

:11:18.:11:20.

which follows allegations by whistleblowers is highly critical

:11:20.:11:25.

of management and governance at the organisation. In a significant move,

:11:25.:11:29.

the job of running the service has now been split. An interim Chief

:11:29.:11:32.

Fire Officer will now share the role with an interim Chief

:11:32.:11:42.
:11:42.:11:49.

Executive, brought in from Scotland. Fire-fighting is a high-risk job

:11:49.:11:53.

often causing tremendous stress for those on the front line. But it is

:11:53.:11:57.

not their actions that are under scrutiny, instead, and what it

:11:57.:12:01.

focuses on those at the very top of the organisation will stop after

:12:01.:12:05.

allegations made by two whistleblowers, the Department of

:12:05.:12:10.

Health carried out its own investigation. Seen by the BBC, it

:12:10.:12:15.

is a damning report which concludes that staff are working in a culture

:12:15.:12:20.

of fear and mistrust. Regarding the behaviour of senior staff, there is

:12:20.:12:23.

systemic problems exacerbated by a lack of strategic direction and

:12:23.:12:28.

guidance from the very top of the organisation. It questions the

:12:28.:12:33.

length of time it takes to develop and implement policies and

:12:33.:12:37.

describes at best a casual approach by some staff were to applying and

:12:37.:12:41.

adhering to existing policies will stop it says there is a culture of

:12:41.:12:47.

shifting blame. For instance, the BBC understands there are up

:12:47.:12:51.

outstanding grievances relating to alleged harassment against one

:12:51.:12:55.

person who continues working within the organisation. Up until recently,

:12:55.:13:00.

these allegations had not been acted upon, either by senior people

:13:00.:13:05.

within the fire service, or within the Department of Health. Last

:13:05.:13:10.

month an employee you received 20,000 compensation after she was

:13:10.:13:12.

suspended for reporting financial wrongdoing. Some of those

:13:12.:13:17.

allegations have been proven true, a separate investigation continues

:13:17.:13:21.

into a recruitment exercise last summer. We understand there are

:13:21.:13:24.

also questions about the authorisation of bonuses over a

:13:24.:13:30.

number of years. The organisation is hiding nothing. In the past two

:13:30.:13:35.

or three years, we have had three chairs, three cheats and a period

:13:35.:13:41.

of instability. That is why morale is low in headquarters because

:13:41.:13:45.

there was a big confidence blow when that initial gaffe happened

:13:45.:13:53.

and we have been working through. My board... What gas was that?

:13:53.:13:57.

Inappropriate payments to nonuniform directors. The auditor

:13:57.:14:02.

does not suggest public safety is being put at risk but it questions

:14:02.:14:06.

staff morale. People I have spoken to have described the atmosphere as

:14:06.:14:10.

toxic, a survival of the fittest, a rat race and an environment where

:14:10.:14:16.

the moral compass has gone askew. would describe it as a rat race. It

:14:16.:14:19.

felt like Dodge City, where you have people doing their own thing

:14:19.:14:24.

in their own way. This is the new entrant chief-executive and

:14:24.:14:28.

Scotland. In a fundamental change, the job of running the service has

:14:28.:14:33.

now been split between him as an Executive and the uniformed chief

:14:33.:14:37.

officer. This is all highly embarrassing, not only for the fire

:14:37.:14:41.

service but for the Department of Health. One it took to

:14:42.:14:45.

whistleblowers to expose what has been going on, it is now the

:14:45.:14:49.

responsibility of this new entrant chief-executive and ultimately the

:14:49.:14:54.

health minister to restore best practice behind closed doors.

:14:54.:14:57.

The County Antrim firm, Wrightbus, has secured a 41 million contract

:14:57.:15:00.

to supply 550 buses to south-east Asia. The vehicles will be produced

:15:00.:15:03.

as kits in the company's Ballymena plant and then assembled in

:15:03.:15:09.

Singapore. The firm will be the main supplier of the vehicles to

:15:09.:15:12.

SBS Transit and has already sold 450 buses to the Asian company

:15:12.:15:22.
:15:22.:15:23.

since 2010. This is our third order from

:15:23.:15:29.

Singapore in as many years. We started in 2009 with an order for

:15:29.:15:35.

150. Follow that up with another order for 300 so there are four and

:15:35.:15:39.

50 Wrightbus double-deckers in Singapore today. This particular

:15:39.:15:43.

order was of a larger magnitude. The government in Singapore is

:15:43.:15:46.

increasing investment in public transport and we are clearly the

:15:46.:15:49.

beneficiary. A yacht club which was destroyed in

:15:49.:15:52.

an arson attack in Londonderry says its annual regatta on Lough Foyle

:15:52.:15:55.

will go ahead as planned later this month. There has been widespread

:15:55.:15:58.

condemnation of the attack on the clubhouse at Culmore Point which is

:15:58.:16:01.

believed to have been set alight by a gang on Friday night. The inside

:16:01.:16:05.

of the building has been destroyed and it will probably have to be

:16:05.:16:13.

demolished. This is a small club, limited

:16:13.:16:17.

resources and we have just been vandalised and burnt out - a

:16:17.:16:21.

pointless act. Where do we go from here? I am speechless.

:16:21.:16:24.

Our time, our place - it is a slogan that has been difficult to

:16:24.:16:28.

miss over the last six months. It is the name of the campaign to

:16:28.:16:30.

promote Northern Ireland as a must see visitor destination. New events

:16:30.:16:34.

like the MTV awards, the Irish Open and the new Titanic building were

:16:34.:16:37.

promoted as big draws but is it working? Throughout this week, Tara

:16:37.:16:42.

Mills is looking at different sides of the tourism story. This evening

:16:42.:16:47.

she has the results of a survey of 500 of our viewers. We asked them a

:16:47.:16:57.
:16:57.:16:57.

range of questions including their holiday destination this year.

:16:57.:17:02.

Despite the recession, 45% of those we asked said they would be going

:17:02.:17:07.

abroad this year. The vast majority said they would not let the

:17:07.:17:11.

economic climate spoiling their choice of foreign holiday. How were

:17:11.:17:15.

they pay for it? Perhaps surprisingly, 37% said they had

:17:15.:17:20.

saved up all year to pay for their holiday while around 45% said it

:17:20.:17:25.

was a mixture of savings and credit. Sometimes savings and sometimes

:17:25.:17:29.

when the holiday needs to be taken and you don't have any money, you

:17:29.:17:35.

get the credit card out. Save up physically. I pay for it on my

:17:35.:17:40.

credit card but I make sure I have the money first. Just get the money

:17:40.:17:46.

and go for it. No point in saving. If you want to get out of Belfast,

:17:46.:17:51.

just pay the money and get out. What about those staying at home?

:17:51.:17:54.

15% said they were not going abroad because they simply could not

:17:55.:17:59.

afford it. For a variety of reasons, we decided to watch the pennies

:18:00.:18:06.

this year and stay at home in case we were needed. I have not

:18:06.:18:12.

regretted it at all. It has been great. Let's look at our home-grown

:18:12.:18:17.

a tourist attractions. We asked 500 people which once they had visited.

:18:17.:18:26.

The Giants Causeway came out as No. 1. The Ulster folk and Transport

:18:26.:18:32.

Museum and the Mourne mountains were joint second. It is heaven.

:18:32.:18:41.

The Irish, if their economy is bad, should not worry. It is gorgeous.

:18:41.:18:46.

It seems we are proud of where we come from. 81% said they would

:18:46.:18:51.

recommend Northern Ireland as a tourist destination. Edie 7% said

:18:51.:18:54.

they recognised there were factors that would put people off, not

:18:54.:18:59.

least the weather and the possibility of violence. A lot of

:18:59.:19:04.

foreign countries are not clean, this was very keen. People were

:19:04.:19:10.

friendly. I cannot say anything bad. Knowing about what has gone on in

:19:10.:19:14.

the past and the things we have seen on the news in years gone by,

:19:14.:19:17.

it was amazing to see there is nothing like that. The picture

:19:18.:19:21.

appears to be rosy for this year at least. Tomorrow night we will hear

:19:22.:19:25.

from foreign visitors on why they chose Northern Ireland for their

:19:25.:19:28.

holiday. For those who use Facebook, we have

:19:28.:19:31.

a special poll about how you pay for your holiday and we would like

:19:31.:19:35.

to hear your views. Tomorrow we try to find out how they can encourage

:19:35.:19:39.

those foreign tourists to return. The boxers glory at the Olympics

:19:39.:19:42.

continues a long tradition of Irish success in the ring, especially

:19:42.:19:47.

among Belfast's fighters. Mark Sidebottom is at tonight's

:19:47.:19:57.
:19:57.:19:58.

homecoming celebration for Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon.

:19:58.:20:03.

They have all gone boxing balmy here in Belfast. This is what they

:20:03.:20:10.

have turned out for, a big piece of boxing history. Paddy Barnes,

:20:10.:20:17.

double bronze and Michael Conlon. Paddy, what a homecoming? It is

:20:17.:20:23.

brilliant, I didn't expect so many people are to turn out. It is great

:20:23.:20:29.

to see the support. It is amazing. You might have had a late night

:20:29.:20:34.

last night but is this beyond your expectations? I thought the crowd

:20:34.:20:39.

outside was big and then I heard a big noise when it came in and it is

:20:39.:20:44.

unreal, the amount of people here. Let's take a look at you last night,

:20:44.:20:47.

the friend of using bolt to just about every other celebrity out

:20:47.:20:57.
:20:57.:20:59.

there. Last night, I was on one of the sport staff's shoulders, it was

:20:59.:21:05.

great. Look at this silver medal, 60 years ago in Helsinki, how much

:21:06.:21:12.

have things changed? An awful lot. The boxers are now getting what is

:21:12.:21:20.

due to them. They are getting the chance to earn medals. Freddie, you

:21:20.:21:27.

are both from the same club, 56 years ago you won it. It is long

:21:27.:21:33.

overdue? Very much so. We always had a good crowd of boxers in our

:21:33.:21:43.
:21:43.:21:51.

club. We had one voice. How good can Michael become? It depends on

:21:51.:21:57.

himself, to -- providing he looks after himself and it doesn't bother

:21:57.:22:07.
:22:07.:22:08.

with girls! Stay away from the women! Until he becomes champion. I

:22:08.:22:17.

retired after that. Paddy, you are contemplating staying on for Rio,

:22:18.:22:23.

given that the Chinese man has taken a step that? Yes, I think he

:22:23.:22:28.

is too old and he will retire before the next Olympics. I created

:22:28.:22:33.

history by winning him to medals so I wanted to become the first to win

three medals. A quick message to those in Belfast because there has

:22:38.:22:43.

been massive support host of a frankly so much for honours board,

:22:43.:22:50.

it drove us on in our sights. Given that you were a more handsome of

:22:50.:22:54.

the two, I will leave a final word to you. It has been amazing and I

:22:54.:23:04.
:23:04.:23:06.

never expected this much support. We love you all!

:23:06.:23:12.

Back now to the studio. You can see an exclusive interview

with all five of Northern Ireland's Olympic medallists on our news

website. It is not just our sportsmen that

:23:20.:23:25.

have been celebrating triumphs. A pipe band from Lisburn have found

:23:25.:23:28.

themselves on top of the world for the incredible eighth time. There

:23:28.:23:31.

was jubilation as the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band beat Scottish

:23:31.:23:33.

Power into second place at the annual World Pipe Band

:23:33.:23:36.

Championships in Glasgow. Thousands of pipers and drummers from more

:23:36.:23:46.
:23:46.:23:47.

than 200 bands took part in the championships.

:23:47.:23:50.

After winning five Major's last year, it was going to be difficult

:23:50.:23:55.

to come back and win this year but we have done well to retain the

:23:55.:23:57.

World Championships which is the main one that everyone wants to

:23:57.:24:07.
:24:07.:24:10.

retain. It looks as though we are back to

:24:10.:24:16.

normal, more unsettled weather is coming this week. The showers are

:24:16.:24:22.

dying out this evening. It will be at drier night will stop a mild

:24:22.:24:27.

night, too, with temperatures of 15 degrees. Tomorrow will be a day of

:24:27.:24:32.

bright spells and scattered showers. At the beginning of the day, rain

:24:32.:24:38.

coming in from the south. It will break up as we go towards the

:24:39.:24:44.

afternoon and with that, some sunshine will come out. In the

:24:44.:24:49.

afternoon, the rain could be heavy and thundery. Temperatures of 20

:24:49.:24:55.

degrees, not feeling too bad. Charis lingering in the second part

:24:56.:24:59.

of the afternoon. Many of us will end on another final tomorrow

:24:59.:25:05.

evening. Staying dry overnight into Wednesday with another mild night

:25:05.:25:11.

to come with temperatures staying up at 15 or 16 degrees. It will be

:25:11.:25:17.

short lived because on Wednesday, we already have an early weather

:25:17.:25:22.

warning in force for some rain pushing its way in from low-

:25:22.:25:32.

pressure. A wet day on Wednesday and quite windy, too. Quite

:25:32.:25:36.

unpleasant conditions. Temperatures may say 18 or 19 degrees but in the

:25:36.:25:42.

wind and rain, it will feel a lot colder. Not to try all the time,

:25:42.:25:45.

sunshine and scattered showers on Thursday and more rain to come on

:25:45.:25:50.

Thursday and more rain to come on Friday.

:25:50.:25:53.

The Olympic Games are over for another four years. For our local

:25:53.:25:56.

competitors in Team Ireland and GB, it was their time to make their

:25:56.:25:59.

mark after years of training and sacrifice. London brought medal

:25:59.:26:07.

glory and heartache. The Olympic medallists from

:26:07.:26:17.
:26:17.:26:19.

Northern Ireland. Great Britain and South Africa. It is great Britain

:26:19.:26:25.

finished second in slobber position. A lot just Coleraine lads any more?

:26:25.:26:31.

They are still just are the ones. Alan Campbell on the line, getting

:26:31.:26:41.
:26:41.:26:53.

the bronze medal! It is another medal for our wee country.

:26:53.:26:56.

I find it disappointing and juvenile and they would have

:26:56.:27:06.
:27:06.:27:06.

expected better. I was sore but I thought, if I can

:27:06.:27:16.
:27:16.:27:28.

stand up and get on my bike, I will get going.

:27:28.:27:38.
