Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Donna Traynor.

:00:20.:00:23.

The University of Ulster creates 100 new places for students

:00:23.:00:33.
:00:33.:00:34.

affected by its admissions blunder. The we make a mistake, we take

:00:34.:00:36.

responsibility or that mistake. Tributes paid to the teenager

:00:36.:00:40.

killed in a horse riding accident. A warning against taking

:00:40.:00:44.

potentially deadly risks at level crossings.

:00:44.:00:48.

It is a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a very laid back paragliding

:00:48.:00:53.

pooch. And yet another week of changeable

:00:53.:00:56.

weather coming up - I'll be back later to advise on which

:00:56.:01:05.

accessories - wellies or suncream? The University of Ulster says it

:01:05.:01:08.

had a moral obligation to create extra places for students who were

:01:08.:01:11.

affected by the mistake in its admission system. Last week, the

:01:11.:01:13.

university mistakenly sent 370 emails offering places on

:01:13.:01:16.

engineering courses. It later withdrew the offers, but in a

:01:16.:01:19.

welcome U-turn for some students it now says there will be up to 100

:01:19.:01:29.
:01:29.:01:38.

extra spaces. Chris Page has the details.

:01:38.:01:43.

Just hours after the results envelopes were opened on Thursday,

:01:43.:01:49.

the University of Ulster send e- mails offering scores of courses to

:01:49.:01:54.

its Engineering Faculty. It apologised. Now it is going to

:01:54.:02:00.

honour them after all. When people applied for university, some were

:02:00.:02:06.

given a far more for us. Others are rejected outright. A third group

:02:06.:02:10.

are told no decision will be made until after exam results. When

:02:10.:02:16.

rates are published, the university decides how many get places. The

:02:17.:02:21.

University of Ulster was said to have sent acceptance to everyone in

:02:21.:02:27.

this group. Not told them would have been awarded a place. 370

:02:27.:02:31.

emails went out. Some applicants applied for more than one course.

:02:31.:02:35.

Some mothers will have chosen to study elsewhere. The university

:02:35.:02:45.

will be taken on a maximum of 100 per us -- students. We are

:02:45.:02:50.

incredibly delighted that the university has prioritised students.

:02:50.:02:56.

On Friday, after we came out of the shambolic episode, if we said they

:02:56.:03:01.

needed to make a swift decision. As things have transpired over the

:03:01.:03:08.

weekend, they have taken what we think is the right decision. While

:03:08.:03:12.

students with lower grades be able to court with their courses?

:03:12.:03:15.

Although all we will not have been able to take on the students this

:03:15.:03:23.

year, if I went back two or three years, we would have been taking

:03:23.:03:27.

students at this level. Our staff are used to it taking -- teaching

:03:27.:03:34.

these students. To help students, the university will introducing it

:03:34.:03:44.
:03:44.:03:44.

-- foundation year. This man got the erroneous e-mail. He had given

:03:44.:03:50.

up hope of getting to university. Now he is very pleased to have a

:03:50.:03:57.

place on the foundation course. is brilliant. I feel I have to do

:03:57.:04:04.

it. All the students are going back. It is a good thing. They don't have

:04:04.:04:10.

to do it. Applying for university can bring delight and

:04:10.:04:16.

disappointment. For the students caught up in this situation, they

:04:16.:04:19.

have had bigger rocks and downs than usual. The university says it

:04:19.:04:27.

will take steps to make sure this never happens again.

:04:27.:04:31.

Earlier I spoke to the man who runs the university and asked him how

:04:31.:04:41.
:04:41.:04:51.

they were going to cope with the extra students. We have on earth

:04:52.:04:58.

does offer us. Before we made this decision, we considered lots of

:04:58.:05:04.

options. We made a mistake. We take responsibility for that mistake. We

:05:04.:05:10.

want to do the best for our students. You said you had a moral

:05:10.:05:20.
:05:20.:05:21.

obligation. Do you have a legal obligation to honour those of us?

:05:21.:05:26.

For me, this is not a legal issue. This is about taking responsibility

:05:26.:05:31.

if I did not take legal advice. If I consider it pitting myself and

:05:31.:05:34.

the position of those students. What is the best for those

:05:34.:05:42.

students? It is about making wrong and right decisions. In doing that,

:05:42.:05:47.

if it is important we have the resources to teach these students.

:05:47.:05:53.

All what is up to 100, they are not all on the same course. The costs

:05:53.:06:00.

are spread out. I discussed on Saturday with their head of the

:06:00.:06:06.

school, binary -- by changing the timetable, could we do it? What

:06:07.:06:15.

sort of thing questions are you getting from the Department?

:06:15.:06:21.

think the Department and the minister has been understanding. He

:06:22.:06:25.

accepts that this has been a mistake. It has been a computer

:06:25.:06:30.

glitch. These things happen. It is important to pick these things

:06:30.:06:40.
:06:40.:06:44.

right. He is understanding but we are working together to fix things.

:06:44.:06:47.

Tributes have been paid to a 13- year-old girl from County Tyrone,

:06:47.:06:50.

who was killed in a horse-riding accident on Friday. At her school,

:06:50.:06:53.

Hannah Wylie has been described her as a much loved and popular student.

:06:53.:06:57.

Teresa Craig reports. A bright young student who excel at

:06:57.:07:03.

sport and was loved by everyone who knew her. The death of Hannah Wylie

:07:03.:07:07.

has been described as a tragic loss. She was taking part in a

:07:07.:07:13.

showjumping event when the accident happened on Friday evening. Those

:07:13.:07:17.

who know or her family say they are trying to come to terms with her

:07:17.:07:24.

death. They are devastated. They are trying to come to terms with

:07:24.:07:33.

that sense of loss. I suppose we're coming to this stage where they are

:07:34.:07:39.

grateful for the short time they had her. How dare has come as a

:07:39.:07:49.
:07:49.:07:53.

shock. She was especially under a will. She was very talented. She

:07:53.:08:03.
:08:03.:08:05.

had a top results in maths and science. Exceptional horsewoman. G

:08:05.:08:10.

was a special young girl. equestrian centre declined to

:08:10.:08:17.

comment but in a cot -- in a statement, the council... For the

:08:17.:08:27.
:08:27.:08:31.

council extended sympathies to the family.

:08:31.:08:34.

Two of the police's most senior officers have made a personal

:08:34.:08:37.

apology to the Mayor of Derry for a search on his house last month.

:08:37.:08:40.

Officers raided the home of Sinn Fein's Kevin Campbell on the 12th

:08:40.:08:43.

of July during an anti-terrorist operation. The police now say they

:08:43.:08:46.

are sorry for the trauma and embarrassment caused to the mayor

:08:46.:08:55.

and his family. I think we must accept that we got it wrong. What

:08:55.:09:04.

we are trying to do is to try to rebuild what has been was letting

:09:04.:09:09.

down the people of Derry. We will work even harder to make sure we

:09:09.:09:17.

can start to rebuild the damage caused by this.

:09:17.:09:20.

The Police are investigating a shooting in Coleraine. A 25-year-

:09:20.:09:23.

old woman and an 18-year-old man were in a house at the Crescent

:09:23.:09:26.

Estate in the early hours of this morning when three shots were fired.

:09:26.:09:30.

They are said to be unhurt, but shaken by the ordeal. A motive for

:09:30.:09:39.

the attack has yet to be established.

:09:39.:09:42.

This is BBC Newsline and still to come on the programme...

:09:42.:09:44.

The Giant's Causeway, transformed into a giant art project.

:09:44.:09:49.

The daring dog as happy to go flying as walkies.

:09:49.:09:52.

Next a reminder that if you don't abide by the rules when using level

:09:52.:09:55.

railway crossings, you are putting your life and the lives of others

:09:55.:09:58.

at risk. To demonstrate the dangers, a collision involving a train and

:09:58.:10:01.

car was staged in County Antrim earlier today. Our reporter Julie

:10:01.:10:11.
:10:11.:10:13.

McCullough was there. This is what can happen when a

:10:13.:10:18.

level crossing is not used properly. Staged for the cameras, this

:10:18.:10:22.

motorist nudged his car on to the real rail track and was hit by a

:10:22.:10:26.

train. If it is not something that happens often have but in the last

:10:26.:10:31.

five years, there have been three death that similar kinds of

:10:31.:10:34.

crossings. Today was a vital opportunity or the emergency

:10:34.:10:39.

services to be prepared should such an incident happen again.

:10:39.:10:46.

trained for all sorts of scenarios. If we can simulate this. This is

:10:46.:10:55.

the real deal. This is a real train on a track. This is first class.

:10:55.:11:01.

There are currently just over 130 private level crossings throughout

:11:01.:11:06.

Northern Ireland. Unlike public level crossings, they do not have

:11:06.:11:13.

likes or barriers. The responsibility is on the driver.

:11:13.:11:17.

Even when there are like sand barriers in place Dickie the public

:11:17.:11:22.

say it, if it is not always enough. Take a let -- take a look at this

:11:22.:11:27.

man. You can see the oncoming train on the left side of the screen. He

:11:27.:11:31.

took a chance to run across the tracks seconds before it went

:11:31.:11:38.

through the crossing. We have had a number of near misses. You can see

:11:38.:11:44.

10 of those incidents every month. We do see it because we have CCTV

:11:44.:11:49.

at these crossings. We see cars jumping red light sand jumping the

:11:49.:11:57.

barriers. The penalties are steep F you do it nor the safety advice.

:11:57.:12:01.

Not only can you be seriously injured or killed, but you could

:12:01.:12:11.
:12:11.:12:12.

end up in the courts. Last year, Does it make a difference when the

:12:12.:12:18.

flags are erected in the name of art? Hans Peter Kuhn is behind a

:12:18.:12:23.

giant art project near the Giant's Causeway which consists of 140

:12:23.:12:28.

yellow and red flags, across Port Noffer bay. It is part of the

:12:28.:12:32.

cultural Olympiad, linked to the London games. We went to look and

:12:32.:12:38.

to get the views of some visitors. It is impossible to miss such is

:12:38.:12:43.

the scale of this work. The project called simply Flags attempts to

:12:43.:12:49.

give visitors a new experience within this landscape. The squares

:12:49.:12:54.

which rotate are placed at random in the bay, beside the famous

:12:54.:12:58.

stones. If I do something here, it has to do with nature, and so I

:12:58.:13:03.

came one the flags which are reacting to the wind. -- came up.

:13:03.:13:07.

The unpredictability with nature, where the wind goes. It is bold but

:13:07.:13:13.

some have questioned if it could have a negative impact on this

:13:13.:13:17.

protected environment The first people we met with was the

:13:17.:13:23.

Environment Agency and the natural trust. We have considered nesting

:13:23.:13:27.

seasons, all environmental impact assessments and everybody has been

:13:27.:13:32.

all over this, to try and make it happen, because for everybody what

:13:32.:13:38.

it allows is unus to engage in a different way. It cost 150,000.

:13:38.:13:45.

Half provided by the London 2012 festival. The other half by the

:13:45.:13:49.

Tourist Board. We are working with international artists and

:13:49.:13:54.

showcasing what we have here to a global audience b, and giving

:13:54.:13:59.

people new reasons to come and visit and to inspire them. So are

:13:59.:14:04.

they inspired? I don't really know what it is supposed to tell me

:14:04.:14:09.

about this. It fits into the landscape here? I do it like it.

:14:09.:14:14.

thought they were some kind of signs saying keep off because it

:14:14.:14:18.

was dangerous. It would have been better if there had been ten times

:14:18.:14:23.

as many and up for two weeks so it had a bigger impact. It is like a

:14:23.:14:28.

bit of Germany here, what do you make of it? That is not Germany at

:14:28.:14:32.

all. Sorry, but at first we don't have landscapes like that, I think

:14:32.:14:37.

just in the south regions and then we don't do, we put, don't put

:14:37.:14:41.

yellow and red flags, that doesn't fit Germany. It is in the mind of

:14:41.:14:46.

the artist. Nothing Germany. Modern art has a tendency to divide

:14:46.:14:50.

opinion and this is no different. It is only here temporarily. Come

:14:50.:14:52.

the start of November this landscape will return to its

:14:52.:15:01.

natural state. Everyone had an opinion. Work is going on to clear

:15:01.:15:08.

one of Bangor's largest derelict eyesore, the site of a former young

:15:08.:15:11.

offender centre had been left untouched for year, and has been a

:15:11.:15:17.

magnet for anti-social behaviour. We have this report. No-one locally

:15:17.:15:22.

at rath gale it is finally being torn to the ground. This 65 acre

:15:22.:15:26.

site has been blighted by problems. It has theft, vandalism, anti-

:15:27.:15:31.

social behaviour, and dozens of deliberate fires. I think it is

:15:31.:15:35.

something that will be welcomed. It will come as a relief to residents

:15:35.:15:40.

as we have seen the site become a dumping ground and a magnet for

:15:40.:15:43.

anti-social behaviour. Government sold to land to a

:15:43.:15:49.

private developer in 2007, for reported 65 million. But plans for

:15:49.:15:54.

850 new homes collapsed with the property crash and an outstanding

:15:54.:15:58.

loan was tran -- transferred to the asset management age circumstances

:15:58.:16:02.

so year of neglect the council ordered the company responsible for

:16:02.:16:06.

the land, to address the the condition of the buildings. I think

:16:06.:16:09.

the situation here has been hampered by some of the problems

:16:09.:16:14.

with ownership, and the fact that this has been private land. It has

:16:14.:16:18.

not been Government land for the last five years that has meant the

:16:18.:16:21.

Department of Justice have a limited role they can play.

:16:21.:16:25.

Councils are exercising their powers to force developers or banks

:16:25.:16:29.

to clean under light or unsafe sites and buildings. The work is

:16:29.:16:35.

due to be completed in the next three months. It may not have been

:16:35.:16:41.

a great summer so far for camping but more and more young people are

:16:41.:16:44.

spending a night under the canvas with the scouts. Record numbers of

:16:44.:16:48.

teenagers have been joining up, and to reflect the popularity at the

:16:48.:16:53.

weekend, a new 3 million campsite, on the Fermanagh-Cavan border was

:16:54.:17:01.

opened by the Irish President. We have this report. Somewhere new for

:17:01.:17:08.

scouts to pitch their tents. This is a magnificent estate of forests

:17:08.:17:13.

and lakes on the Fermanagh-Cavan border. Once the grand home of the

:17:13.:17:16.

Sandersons, including the man who founded the Ulster Unionist Party,

:17:16.:17:22.

the castle now lies in ruins. After years of planning and setbacks,

:17:22.:17:27.

including the builder going bust two years ago, at last on Saturday,

:17:27.:17:32.

the international campsite was ready for a Presidential opening.

:17:32.:17:38.

Although the President hadn't quite got the hang of the left handed

:17:38.:17:43.

scout handshake. We have a 43 acre site, in normal terms it will camp

:17:43.:17:50.

close on 1,000. For the jam bow re- type camp up to 2,000. It has a

:17:50.:17:57.

fantastic facility,, it has a shelter where you could hold a

:17:57.:18:02.

meeting. The scouts are impressed with the new site. I think the

:18:02.:18:07.

scenery is beautiful. There is loads of space to do different

:18:07.:18:12.

things. I think there has, it has a fantastic feel, lots of space.

:18:12.:18:16.

is great the way it is in a big forest. There is loads of adventure

:18:16.:18:21.

to do. If you thought today's young people prefer to spend life in

:18:21.:18:25.

front of the telly think again. have record numbers of teenagers,

:18:25.:18:30.

boys and girls, 13, 14, and 15, you would normally think would want to

:18:30.:18:35.

be joining scouting, we have them joining in record number, a 25%

:18:35.:18:39.

growth over the last couple of years, that is because we are able

:18:39.:18:45.

to provided a venture rows activities, getting them out in

:18:45.:18:49.

canoes and into the mountains and getting them out and doing

:18:49.:18:54.

adventure. The site is one of scouting's five peace centres so as

:18:54.:18:59.

well as bringing together young people from across Ireland, it is

:18:59.:19:02.

hoped some of the 30 million scouts from round the world will also come

:19:02.:19:12.
:19:12.:19:16.

here. I was a Brownie and guide, what were you? BV. Gavin is here to

:19:16.:19:19.

talk about football. There is an unusual look at the top of the

:19:19.:19:24.

table. The newest club is setting the pace. Who is that?

:19:24.:19:27.

Ballinamallard United. The new boys are in the Premiership for the

:19:27.:19:31.

first time and already have made their mark, a McCartney hat-trick

:19:31.:19:36.

in a 5-0 win was a big story on a weekend when all the other clubs

:19:36.:19:44.

could only manage a point. Admission was free to the club was

:19:44.:19:47.

those coming from Fermanagh would have paid. Ballinamallard United

:19:47.:19:52.

have hit the ground running and demolished distillery to go top.

:19:52.:19:57.

The home side's frustrations boiled over and Simpson was given a

:19:57.:20:01.

straight red card for getting involved in this incident in the

:20:01.:20:07.

second half. Then, the the floodgates opened. Jason McCartney

:20:07.:20:13.

played a starring roesm he set up one goal and completed the first

:20:13.:20:20.

hat-trick of the season. They have settled into life in the top flight.

:20:20.:20:24.

We expected a tough game, so we know we have to play our best every

:20:24.:20:28.

game to get points. Maybe they didn't play up to the way they can,

:20:28.:20:33.

and we are going to play 100% no matter what, so maybe we got off

:20:33.:20:36.

one, but you can't take away what we did. Portadown are second in the

:20:36.:20:44.

table but it took a late equaliser to salvage a point at Donegal

:20:44.:20:54.
:20:54.:20:54.

Celtic courtesy of Gary Breen. Glentoran took the lead. Glenavon

:20:54.:21:01.

bounced back. Matty Burrows volley worthy of a point. The come back of

:21:01.:21:07.

the day came at Dungannon Swifts. Cliftonville took the lead through

:21:07.:21:12.

an own goal. Then at the other end Steven O'Neill produced an early

:21:12.:21:20.

contender for goal of the the season. It was scoreless in the

:21:20.:21:26.

other two matches, Gary Thompson squandered the best chance of the

:21:26.:21:30.

game when Ballymena visit ed. As for the Blues they have been off

:21:30.:21:37.

colour. They are second from bottom -- Linfield are second from bottom.

:21:37.:21:43.

And there is more from the weekend's games on Final Score 2.

:21:43.:21:51.

It can be found on the website. On to rugby and the Rabo Direct Pro

:21:51.:21:55.

kicks off. Ulster were back at Ravenhill for their latest warm-up

:21:55.:21:59.

game and held Leicester Tigers to a draw. What a crucial time to bring

:21:59.:22:07.

on a replacement. When that replacement is an All Black it is a

:22:07.:22:12.

chance worth taking. The referee has given a penalty try. If all of

:22:12.:22:17.

the coach'sicals pay off like this, Ulster could be in for quite a

:22:17.:22:24.

season. While the home side was missing many of its mar quay

:22:24.:22:28.

neckaches Leicester brought many internationals. It looked as if

:22:28.:22:33.

their experience would tell. Two tries in quick succession put the

:22:33.:22:40.

English Premiership side in control. That is a try. It looks like it is

:22:40.:22:45.

Waldron. But in the closing stages Ulster carved out an opening for

:22:45.:22:51.

Chris Cochrane to burst through the defence and level the scores.

:22:51.:22:56.

a score. Chris Cochrane. We had a lot of young guys out there, the

:22:56.:23:01.

second half, the last quarter of an hour, the back-line, they were only

:23:01.:23:04.

at school two years ago, the way they handle it, they nearly got a

:23:04.:23:07.

winning try at the end. It is something to be proud of,

:23:07.:23:12.

encouraging we are getting that sort of thing. Mark has come in and

:23:12.:23:17.

took on a new meaning. One man and a dog, well they were seen

paragliding down a mountain. Believe it or not it was Slieve

Donard. We met one the flying duo. Want to go flying? Harry barks with

excitement at the prospect of another flight. After a brief test

:24:20.:24:24.

run, the ten-year-old collie cross took to the skies above Newcastle

:24:24.:24:27.

for the first time last week. Paragliding in tandem with his

:24:27.:24:37.
:24:37.:24:44.

owner. What do you think Harry? Harry's first flight! We walked up

:24:44.:24:48.

Slieve Donard, it was a bit of a test flight. Got him hooked in, off

:24:48.:24:56.

we went. He looked very relaxed. At the beginning he thought it was

:24:56.:24:59.

strange to be sitting on my knee. He never gets on my knee at home in

:24:59.:25:03.

the house, he just sort of relaxed quickly and kept looking round. And

:25:03.:25:08.

by the time we got over Newcastle he was looking down. I think he may

:25:08.:25:14.

have seen cars and thought maybe they were flies or bees, he doesn't

:25:14.:25:20.

like bees, birds or flies. You can see him turning his head watching,

:25:20.:25:23.

following something on the ground. He was relaxed and he never made a

:25:23.:25:28.

sound. Even when I landed he sat down on the beach and waited until

:25:28.:25:32.

I unhooked him and away he went. Pilot and pet are just waiting for

:25:32.:25:36.

the right weather conditions until they their next flight. Until then

:25:36.:25:44.

it is six feet firmly on the ground. The dog seemed happy enough. I

:25:44.:25:47.

don't know about that. His tail wagged at the end when he got out.

reaction, look at our Facebook page. Let us get the latest on the

weather. Thank you. Interesting weather coming up. There is a big

:26:01.:26:05.

area of low pressure in the Atlantic. It probably will have

:26:05.:26:08.

tropical air mixed in. It could bring some heavy rain and high wind

:26:08.:26:12.

before the end of the week. In the meantime, we have had a bit of a

:26:12.:26:18.

mix today, sunshine and showers. If you live in Armagh, County Down you

:26:18.:26:24.

probably didn't see too many. That is because the heaviest ones were

:26:24.:26:28.

over North Antrim. A lot of places now are dry. This is how Portrush

:26:28.:26:34.

looked a couple of hours ago. There is a rainbow in the background and

:26:34.:26:39.

further south, lovely sunny skies. So for a lot of places it is a fine

:26:39.:26:43.

evening and it will stay dry. Quite clear. Possibly just a bit fresher

:26:43.:26:47.

compared to recent nights but mild, with temperatures in double figure,

:26:47.:26:52.

so a dry night means a dry start tomorrow. Unlike today, when the

:26:52.:26:55.

showers were well scattered, tomorrow they will be frequent. It

:26:55.:27:00.

is much less likely you will get away without any rain tomorrow. But

:27:00.:27:05.

initially, when you set off to work it will be dry in a lot of places.

:27:05.:27:11.

Mid-morning though, our weather warning kicks in. We are expecting

:27:11.:27:15.

possibly ten to 15 mill meeters of rain. That is half an inch falling

:27:15.:27:20.

in a short space of time. That could lead to localised flooding.

:27:20.:27:25.

The greens and yellow are representing the heavy thundery

:27:25.:27:30.

downpours. Not necessarily in these places, but they will be frequent

:27:30.:27:33.

ones round and because of more cloud, it means that temperatures

:27:33.:27:36.

will be that bit lower. They continue right through to the end

:27:36.:27:44.

of the day and into the early evening. There will be some soggy

:27:44.:27:48.

ground round, so perhaps an evening for the wellies. It will ease away

:27:48.:27:51.

tomorrow night and we will have a break on Wednesday. One or two

:27:51.:27:54.
