Good evening and welcome to BBC Newsline. Tonight's top stories. As | :00:21. | :00:24.
one prominent flags protestor faces charges in court another two remain | :00:24. | :00:30.
in police custody. Sinn Fein face pressure to change | :00:30. | :00:34.
their stance on abortion. It was Northern Ireland's first | :00:34. | :00:37.
Environmental Centre, but, 13 years on, some say it's time for a | :00:37. | :00:42.
rethink. Rory McIlroy's blames toothache for | :00:42. | :00:45.
his dramatic walk off the golf course in Florida. We'll have the | :00:45. | :00:51.
full story. It's been fine start to spring with | :00:51. | :00:54.
some good sunshine through the day, but will there be more over the | :00:54. | :01:03.
Today, one prominent participant in the flags protests, Jim Dowson, has | :01:03. | :01:06.
been arrested and another, Willie Frazer, faced a number of criminal | :01:06. | :01:14.
charges and was remanded in custody. A third, Jamie Bryson, is expected | :01:14. | :01:17.
in court tomorrow morning. At one stage today protestors met briefly | :01:18. | :01:20.
outside Belfast City Hall before dispersing and reassembling to walk | :01:20. | :01:30.
:01:30. | :01:33. | ||
up the hill to Stormont. Conor Macauley reports. | :01:33. | :01:38.
This is Jim Dowson addressing a lunchtime protest rally at Belfast | :01:38. | :01:42.
City Hall. The crowd were there wanted to walk to Stormont to hand | :01:42. | :01:46.
in a protest letter, but were told they couldn't do it in one large | :01:46. | :01:54.
group. Instead, they were told they would have to split up and make | :01:54. | :02:02.
their way separately into East Belfast. They will arrest us, it is | :02:02. | :02:09.
as simple as that. Remember, if you get arrested, they are refusing | :02:09. | :02:14.
bail, so if you can spend the next months in jail Richard job, lose | :02:14. | :02:24.
:02:24. | :02:26. | ||
your mortgage, it is up to you. crowd did disburse, but Jane Dowson | :02:26. | :02:36.
was arrested a few streets away. He is the third high-profile | :02:36. | :02:39.
spokesperson linked to the flags protest that has been detained in | :02:39. | :02:45.
recent days. Earlier, Willie Fraser appeared in court charged with the | :02:45. | :02:49.
number of protest offences and possession of a stun gun. When told | :02:49. | :02:55.
he could apply to bail to the High Court, he thanked the judge but | :02:55. | :03:02.
said he would rather stay in jail. Outside, his wife give her reaction. | :03:02. | :03:06.
The charges are trumped-up, ridiculous, they are political | :03:06. | :03:12.
decisions. William has been refused bail because his high profile. | :03:12. | :03:16.
Jimmy Bryson is still in police custody and is being questioned | :03:16. | :03:20.
about similar offences to those with which Willie Fraser has been | :03:20. | :03:30.
:03:30. | :03:31. | ||
charged. Meanwhile, the protest of loyalists made its way to Stormont. | :03:31. | :03:35.
They have taken what they might think is their head of the snake, | :03:35. | :03:39.
but this has always been about the people, not about individuals. It | :03:39. | :03:43.
was started with the people, carried on by people, and will | :03:44. | :03:52.
carry on with the people. Three protesters delivered a lecture with | :03:52. | :04:02.
:04:02. | :04:03. | ||
a petition -- a lecture with the Abortion has always been a | :04:03. | :04:05.
politically sensitive issue in Northern Ireland. Today, an anti- | :04:05. | :04:07.
abortion group claimed one political party is facing, what it | :04:07. | :04:10.
called, political suicide over its stance. Precious Life is urging | :04:10. | :04:13.
Sinn Fein to reconsider its position ahead of a vote in the | :04:13. | :04:15.
Assembly next month. Our political correspondent Martina Purdy has the | :04:15. | :04:25.
:04:25. | :04:26. | ||
details. These politicians and campaigners reunited at Stormont | :04:26. | :04:31.
today offer their opposition to abortion. They included Unionists, | :04:31. | :04:41.
:04:41. | :04:46. | ||
a Fianna Fail politician and Dana. Sinn Fein is supposed to be changed | :04:46. | :04:52.
to make it illegal for clinics to carry out abortions. If Sinn Fein | :04:52. | :04:59.
puts forward an position of concern against the cement and, I think | :04:59. | :05:02.
they should make it clear cue to the people about their views on | :05:02. | :05:10.
abortion. It could be political suicide for this party. De DUP's | :05:10. | :05:14.
said only the NHS should be carried out abortions when permitted under | :05:14. | :05:18.
the lot and echoed the call for Sinn Fein to rethink its position. | :05:18. | :05:23.
In this issue they are massively out of step and they think they | :05:23. | :05:29.
need to get real and I hope the leadership recognises the | :05:29. | :05:34.
significance and symbolism of what has occurred here today and that we | :05:34. | :05:38.
actually see a change of heart and an expression of the genuine views | :05:38. | :05:43.
that they will be hearing from their own constituents. The vote on | :05:43. | :05:49.
the amendment was supposed to take place on Tuesday. That has been | :05:49. | :05:52.
delayed for a week and in the meantime repetition of concern in | :05:52. | :05:56.
that blocking the measure is circulating here at Stormont. Sinn | :05:56. | :06:00.
Fein had no immediate comment. The Justice Minister this afternoon | :06:00. | :06:07.
told the BBC it was inappropriate to attack and amendments on | :06:07. | :06:11.
abortion on to his criminal justice bill at the last minute without | :06:11. | :06:18.
proper consultation, but the MLAs behind the amendment head back. But | :06:18. | :06:23.
they said it was normal practice and saying that the Minister and | :06:23. | :06:25.
self- had already agreed another amendment without public | :06:25. | :06:29.
consultation. You're watching BBC Newsline. Still | :06:29. | :06:32.
to come: Another bad day at the office for Rory McIlroy, as he | :06:32. | :06:41.
walks off halfway through his round A prominent Republican has appeared | :06:41. | :06:44.
in court charged with IRA membership. Sean Hughes was | :06:44. | :06:46.
arrested earlier this week by police making inquiries linked to | :06:46. | :06:48.
the murder of Robert McCartney in 2005. Several Sinn Fein politicians | :06:49. | :06:58.
:06:59. | :06:59. | ||
were in court for the hearing. Chris Page reports. | :06:59. | :07:04.
This is Sean Hughes speaking at a funeral five years ago. He was | :07:04. | :07:09.
arrested on Wednesday but is making inquiries connected to the murder | :07:09. | :07:14.
of Robert McCartney in Belfast and 2005. The killing led to a crisis | :07:14. | :07:18.
in the peace process when Mr Mugabe's sisters said IRA members | :07:18. | :07:22.
were involved. This morning Sean Hughes appeared in court on three | :07:22. | :07:26.
charges including membership of an illegal organisation, namely the | :07:26. | :07:31.
IRA. Shunt you stood in the dock and did not speak during the short | :07:31. | :07:36.
hearing, he only nodded to the can for me understood the charges. | :07:36. | :07:40.
Prosecution lawyers agreed to bail and a police officer outlined the | :07:40. | :07:44.
conditions. The work that he must live at a summer dress, a report to | :07:44. | :07:50.
police once a week and not have any contact with witnesses in this case. | :07:50. | :07:56.
The accused, Hughes 51, is a member of Sinn Fein. Several politicians | :07:56. | :08:00.
from the party were in the public gallery for the hearing. This is | :08:00. | :08:06.
not about finding the killers of Robert McCartney. This is simply | :08:06. | :08:10.
about political policing. Sean Hughes will appear in court again | :08:10. | :08:20.
:08:20. | :08:22. | ||
later this month. It was a millennium project which | :08:22. | :08:24.
set out to educate us about renewable energy and sustainable | :08:24. | :08:27.
living. All this was housed in a futuristic building which generated | :08:27. | :08:30.
its own power and heating. But, 13 years on, the Ecos centre near | :08:30. | :08:33.
Ballymena is mostly used for office space and conferences. So what does | :08:33. | :08:36.
the future hold for Ecos? Our district reporter David Maxwell has | :08:36. | :08:45.
been investigating. This was Northern Ireland's First | :08:45. | :08:48.
Environmental Centre. His unusual design draws attention but in | :08:48. | :08:53.
recent years it has not drawn visitors. When it opened this | :08:53. | :08:59.
building hosted state-of-the-art solar panels. Some of the solar | :08:59. | :09:04.
panels have been turned off and the building is now heated by gas. Some | :09:04. | :09:08.
believe it is time for a rethink. The difference here and 13 years is | :09:08. | :09:12.
that people are more educated, so maybe the education facility isn't | :09:12. | :09:16.
needed now. What we need to do is use the building for something | :09:16. | :09:21.
better, something to look towards the future. This is one of the | :09:21. | :09:25.
galleries that school groups used to come and visit. Here children | :09:25. | :09:30.
could learn about renewable energy. Now this place lies empty for much | :09:30. | :09:33.
of the year and many of the exhibits are out of date or not | :09:33. | :09:37.
working. Another one of the galleries has been converted into | :09:37. | :09:41.
meeting rooms. The council admits it has difficulty keeping up to | :09:41. | :09:46.
date with the School Curriculum and advances in green technology. So, | :09:46. | :09:51.
what lessons have been learnt? Basically that it requires a | :09:51. | :09:58.
continued investment in order to keep apace with technology. | :09:58. | :10:02.
some investment is coming down the line. A hundred 1,000 has been | :10:02. | :10:08.
secured to employ an enterprise manager for the next few years. | :10:08. | :10:15.
Their primary remit will be to develop communication space here, | :10:15. | :10:20.
hot bearskin, business support mechanisms in order to develop | :10:20. | :10:23.
suitable enterprise for the future. So, the council wants to attract | :10:24. | :10:28.
more businesses here. In order to do so it may need to make some | :10:28. | :10:32.
changes. The problem is that it that in this building might not be | :10:32. | :10:36.
that straightforward. The millions provided by the millennium | :10:36. | :10:40.
condition came up all sorts of restrictions over future years. | :10:40. | :10:43.
Council officials are now looking to save the was run reflects | :10:43. | :10:50.
ability. Many say the 150 acres of surrounding parkland has been the | :10:50. | :10:54.
major success of this project and it is certainly popular. The | :10:54. | :10:59.
spotlight is now on the future of this building, and its renewed | :10:59. | :11:04.
ability. Tonight sees the end of our series | :11:04. | :11:06.
of special reports on the Northern Ireland Film industry. All this | :11:06. | :11:09.
week we've spoken to the local people involved in making home- | :11:09. | :11:11.
grown productions and those big budget blockbusters. We've heard | :11:11. | :11:14.
from the technicians and the talent, now Natasha Sayee talks to those | :11:14. | :11:24.
:11:24. | :11:35. | ||
who put the finishing touches to the on-screen look. | :11:35. | :11:39.
Pamela Smith is one of the most renowned make-up artists in the UK | :11:39. | :11:44.
and today she is teaching those who want to follow her brushstrokes and | :11:44. | :11:49.
naked in the film industry. If you put too much on a content to live | :11:49. | :11:54.
theatrical. I had been a make-up artist for 27 years. The majority | :11:54. | :11:59.
of that I had to work away, but for every six years ago we had some big | :11:59. | :12:04.
industry people from Hollywood come here and make movies and it was | :12:04. | :12:09.
just appearing to get bigger and bigger and bigger. So, when we had | :12:09. | :12:14.
difficulty getting make-up assistants for our bigger days, we | :12:14. | :12:20.
had hundreds of extras, we were really struggling. So, we set this | :12:20. | :12:26.
place up so that we could expand what the market. During this | :12:26. | :12:29.
specialist training, the students learn how to replicate everything | :12:29. | :12:34.
from gunshot wounds to head injury, it increasing their employability | :12:35. | :12:40.
in the film industry. At was working as an art teacher. That is | :12:40. | :12:44.
one of the industries were there are many jobs. I still wanted to do | :12:44. | :12:49.
something creative and be part of the artistic world. With the make- | :12:49. | :12:52.
up and the film industry in Northern Ireland really growing, I | :12:52. | :12:58.
thought it was a fantastic area to be working in. So, from developing | :12:58. | :13:01.
careers in cosmetics and effect here to learning all about the | :13:01. | :13:11.
:13:11. | :13:16. | ||
wardrobe department here at Belfast The course tutors know that as the | :13:16. | :13:19.
Northern Ireland will and Industry crews, their students have every | :13:19. | :13:27.
chance of making them. neighbour next door in the Titanic | :13:27. | :13:33.
studios, that is an inspiration. We are trying to establish the Belfast | :13:33. | :13:38.
Metropolitan as the forefront of that, providing those skilled | :13:38. | :13:42.
students to progress on to that industry. So, we have seen the | :13:42. | :13:46.
make-up and the costumes. What about their hair? Patricia Strong | :13:46. | :13:52.
has been a wig mistress on loads of really big productions. We have a | :13:52. | :13:58.
great shortage of film hairdressers. Hairdressers working in salons | :13:58. | :14:03.
until hairdresser to do different things. You need to learn how to | :14:03. | :14:07.
become a film hairdresser. Certainly I would say in the next | :14:07. | :14:11.
few years, there would be a lot of work. Who was her favourite | :14:11. | :14:21.
celebrity to work on? I can go past Pierce Brosnan. He was an absolute | :14:21. | :14:27.
gentleman. Liam Neeson said he could possibly soon be making a | :14:27. | :14:31.
film in Northern Ireland. Maybe the ladies will get their chance to do | :14:31. | :14:41.
:14:41. | :14:44. | ||
his make-up! Later in the programme we will | :14:44. | :14:47.
explain how everyone can hit the right note when it comes to one of | :14:47. | :14:51.
the big movie musicals. It appears toothache was to blame | :14:51. | :14:54.
for Rory McIlroy walking off the golf course and out of a tournament | :14:54. | :14:56.
in Florida today. Austin O'Callaghan's here. | :14:56. | :14:59.
McIlroy withdrew from the Honda Classic without finishing nine | :14:59. | :15:02.
holes today. This is an event he won last year. He left the course | :15:02. | :15:05.
initially saying he wasn't in the right place mentally. But later, a | :15:05. | :15:08.
statement on the PGA Tour website said McIlroy was suffering from a | :15:08. | :15:14.
sore wisdom tooth. Mark Sidebottom reports. | :15:14. | :15:20.
There is flash photography in this report. | :15:20. | :15:23.
He was seven over shot and that certain to miss another cut when he | :15:23. | :15:28.
made his dramatic exit. At the night told he put his second shot | :15:28. | :15:31.
into the water, took the drop, played his next shot and then | :15:31. | :15:35.
signalled to his caddie that he was picking his ball up, shook hands | :15:35. | :15:39.
with his playing partners, will walk to the parking lot saying I am | :15:39. | :15:44.
not in the group is mentally, I can't say much, I am just in a bad | :15:44. | :15:49.
place mentally. It turns out he actually meant dentally. He said to | :15:49. | :15:55.
take was the root of the problem and he quit due to severe pain. | :15:55. | :15:59.
world No. 1 began the year by missing the cut at Abu Dhabi. He | :15:59. | :16:06.
lost them in the opening round of the World Golf Championship. That | :16:06. | :16:10.
is part of what we do. We're under the spotlight and will get | :16:10. | :16:15.
criticised. I just go with them play the best I can. Hopefully that | :16:15. | :16:24.
is good enough. No one can question his ability to bounce back from | :16:24. | :16:29.
adversity, following the infamous masters meltdown in 2011, he went | :16:29. | :16:33.
on to win the US Open and he silenced the doubters last year | :16:33. | :16:39.
with an astonishing finish to 2012 winning his second major, the USPGA | :16:39. | :16:43.
as well as the race to Dubai. Don't be surprised if it does not get | :16:43. | :16:52.
crunch time. The teething problems could yet prove the catalyst. | :16:52. | :16:55.
Now to rugby and Ulster are looking to get back to winning ways in | :16:55. | :16:58.
rugby's Pro 12. They host Italian side Treviso at Ravenhill. Gavin | :16:58. | :17:02.
Andrews is pitch side. We have perfect conditions for | :17:02. | :17:08.
running rugby at Ravenhill. This is a big night tonight for Paddy | :17:08. | :17:14.
Jackson. It is, yes. He will relish it giving their -- and given the it | :17:14. | :17:20.
kicking opportunity the weather provides. I think you got the back | :17:20. | :17:27.
line moving well against Scotland. Unfortunately, he missed his kicks. | :17:27. | :17:31.
When you're not kicking for your problems week in week out, it will | :17:31. | :17:36.
be difficult in the Six Nations. Ulster have been through a patchy | :17:36. | :17:41.
spell. Treviso will make it tough. They will. They had a big win | :17:41. | :17:46.
against Munster last weekend's. Five tries. It shows they are | :17:46. | :17:54.
intent on playing running rugby. They will certainly be looking for | :17:54. | :18:02.
a big performance. Kick-off Pier is at 7:05pm. There | :18:02. | :18:05.
are four Irish Cup quarter-finals tomorrow in local football. Few | :18:05. | :18:08.
teams face a bigger challenge than amateur league side Kilmore Rec. | :18:08. | :18:10.
They travel to Solitude to take on high-flying Cliftonville, but they | :18:10. | :18:18.
will, at least, have some inside information on their opponents. | :18:19. | :18:28.
:18:29. | :18:29. | ||
Kilmore Rec take the field tomorrow, enjoying life as an underdog. Even | :18:29. | :18:34.
the mascot has called lucky! They know they will lead -- will need a | :18:34. | :18:39.
lot of luck facing Cliftonville. Three of their players are for | :18:39. | :18:43.
marketable players. They hope to avoid their repeat of the previous | :18:43. | :18:47.
encounter with the big Belfast team. We were in that situation three | :18:48. | :18:55.
years ago against Linfield. It was an 11-0 defeat. We want to show | :18:55. | :19:01.
that there is not back gap between ourselves and a Premiership club. | :19:01. | :19:06.
You have to approach it with the mindset that there is a chance to | :19:06. | :19:11.
win. You have to believe that there is a chance. That is what we will | :19:11. | :19:16.
be taking into the game. They have reason to believe. They have won | :19:16. | :19:23.
their last six matches. Extending their run to seven at the expense | :19:23. | :19:25.
of Cliftonville is a very different proposition. | :19:25. | :19:27.
Tyrone and Donegal Gaelic footballers go head-to-head this | :19:27. | :19:30.
Sunday in Division one of the Allianz League. This is a dress | :19:30. | :19:32.
rehearsal for their Ulster Championship meeting later this | :19:32. | :19:35.
year. Paul Durcan's boot helped Donegal win last year's | :19:35. | :19:38.
championship clash. Sunday's match looks like being just as close. It | :19:38. | :19:43.
will be live on BBC Radio Ulster medium wave. | :19:43. | :19:46.
The sun will come out tomorrow and, no, that's not the weather forecast. | :19:46. | :19:49.
Barra will be here shortly with that. It's more of a challenge, | :19:49. | :19:53.
actually, particularly if you live in the North West. Do you know the | :19:53. | :19:57.
song, can you sing and can you dance and do you want to get into | :19:57. | :20:00.
the Guinness Book of Records? This weekend, as part of the City Of | :20:00. | :20:03.
Culture, one local community group is enlisting the support of | :20:03. | :20:06.
thousands to perform the song from the musical Annie and, as Keiron | :20:06. | :20:09.
Tourish reports, a wide range of people have already signed up. The | :20:09. | :20:12.
latest we're hearing is that around 4,000 have signed up so a few extra | :20:12. | :20:20.
will be welcome to get them over the world record line. | :20:20. | :20:25.
For the footballers of Derry City, this was a case of walking into the | :20:25. | :20:29.
unknown. They were walking -- they were swapping their football boots | :20:29. | :20:39.
:20:39. | :20:41. | ||
for dancing shoes. I think might dancing days are definitely over! | :20:42. | :20:47.
But the footballers have got into dispirit and joined a local arts | :20:47. | :20:53.
group to try to break a world record. They are recruiting 4501 | :20:53. | :21:00.
people to dance and sing the song from the famous musical. The Second | :21:00. | :21:03.
Reich told the girls and boys, it will to bat through to their | :21:03. | :21:08.
families, to their schools, their community. A great reaction and a | :21:08. | :21:17.
great buzz. Everyone is getting on board. So how did the players feel | :21:18. | :21:26.
they performed? I thought I was all right! It was a bit of fun. Or you | :21:26. | :21:33.
nervous? I was a little bit. My little girl must have watched a | :21:33. | :21:39.
double-hundred time so I had some idea of what it was. Something | :21:39. | :21:43.
different from training! There is no doubt that people here are up | :21:43. | :21:49.
for a challenge. In December 2007 13,000 men women and children put | :21:49. | :21:53.
on Santa Claus outfits into to the city walls to attempt to gain entry | :21:53. | :22:00.
into the Guinness Book of World Records. So, this scene is now set | :22:01. | :22:04.
for another world record attempt and all ages are determined to make | :22:04. | :22:12.
their mark. We think 4000 have signed up so a | :22:12. | :22:17.
few extra will be welcome! And you don't even have to have ginger hair, | :22:17. | :22:27.
:22:27. | :22:29. | ||
I'm still losing my hair! In terms of sunshine, we did have plenty | :22:29. | :22:36.
today to kick up the spring season. Me to Robert -- according to the | :22:36. | :22:41.
met Office, spring starts today. It is because it is high pressure that | :22:41. | :22:46.
we have had good weather today. So, as we go through tonight, it will | :22:46. | :22:50.
stay dry and a little bit of frost developing in one or two places for | :22:50. | :22:55.
we have clear skies, especially in the south-east. Elsewhere we should | :22:55. | :23:00.
manage they just above freezing, so that means we can expect not too | :23:00. | :23:04.
much frost or put a few of us. Going into tomorrow, there will be | :23:04. | :23:11.
mist and fog developing tonight. Otherwise, dry start to the day. | :23:11. | :23:15.
Throughout the afternoon the cloud they be thick enough in parts of | :23:15. | :23:19.
the west and north to give some light patchy rain and drizzle. The | :23:19. | :23:24.
emphasis tomorrow, however, is on dry weather. Temperatures will be | :23:24. | :23:30.
similar to today, about nine degrees. The wind will stay fairly | :23:31. | :23:34.
light. Through the evening tomorrow that will stay dry. Into tomorrow | :23:34. | :23:39.
night a similar picture. We should have too much frost away about. The | :23:39. | :23:43.
pictures for most will stay just above freezing, but we do have some | :23:43. | :23:47.
breaks and Mark Clyde, we may see a touch of frost. Some pockets of | :23:47. | :23:52.
mist and fog once again forming as a going to Sunday. That could give | :23:52. | :23:56.
a few visibility problems. Sunday, apart from one or two spots of | :23:57. | :24:00.
light rain and drizzle, it will be a dry day and those temperatures | :24:00. | :24:05.
will be seven or eight degrees, so plenty of dry weather to come as | :24:05. | :24:10.
you go through the weekend. So, quick clip ahead to next week. Well, | :24:11. | :24:16.
there is some good news, we hold on to the Spring theme, but it looks | :24:16. | :24:23.
as it will be brighter and Monday and Tuesday. At least for the time | :24:23. | :24:26.
being it will be dry and there will be no rain on the way until the | :24:26. | :24:33. |
