Newsline: the DUP warns Sinn Fein over any proposals to glorify | :00:41. | :00:47.
terrorism. A former DUP election candidate involved in a pipe bomb | :00:47. | :00:50.
attack is jailed for three years. Welcome back. The dollar llama takes | :00:50. | :00:56.
a walk on the peace Bridge. -- Dally Lama. We'll have the latest on a | :00:56. | :01:01.
legal challenge to the multi-million pound redevelopment of Windsor Park. | :01:01. | :01:05.
And there may be some rain around this evening but a better day is on | :01:05. | :01:15.
the way tomorrow. I'll have the details shortly. Food tests by | :01:15. | :01:17.
Queen's University for BBC Newsline have revealed that while beef | :01:17. | :01:21.
samples were found to be free from horse meat, there is an issue with | :01:21. | :01:26.
some fish products being sold locally. Items sold and priced as | :01:26. | :01:32.
being cod were actually not that species at all. That has prompted an | :01:32. | :01:36.
expert to say it is another example of the integrity of the food chain | :01:36. | :01:41.
being shown to be sub-standard. Our business correspondent has been | :01:41. | :01:49.
looking at all this. Should we be worried? Let's say straightaway the | :01:49. | :01:52.
tests we asked Queen's to carry out did not raise any food safety issue | :01:52. | :01:55.
whatsoever. We want to be absolutely clear about that. No safety food | :01:55. | :02:00.
issue. What we ran here was a simple snapshot consumer test, prompted by | :02:00. | :02:08.
the headlines and fall-out from the horse meat scandal. We thought we'd | :02:08. | :02:14.
try to gauge the bone fides of what was on some of our shelves. The | :02:14. | :02:18.
sample size in our survey was relatively small, but the results | :02:18. | :02:24.
did pose some big questions. This is one of the food labs at Queens | :02:24. | :02:29.
University. It is where we had scientists running a series of | :02:29. | :02:35.
tests. First, we wanted to know about beef. We bought ten different | :02:35. | :02:41.
products, like mints and burgers, at random from different supermarkets | :02:41. | :02:45.
and smaller shops, and asked Queens to check for any traces of coarse | :02:45. | :02:53.
meet. We found absolutely no trace of contamination. In consultation | :02:53. | :02:59.
with experts, we also decided to examine processed lamb for any cross | :02:59. | :03:05.
contamination with pork. Again, it was all clear. But when we tested | :03:05. | :03:12.
the card, the results were more eye-catching. -- tested cod. Again, | :03:12. | :03:18.
we had purchased ten different items at random. Each packet was clearly | :03:18. | :03:25.
labeled as a cod. But tests found that two of our ten samples | :03:25. | :03:31.
contained no cod. The first ting people ask for, does it have an | :03:31. | :03:38.
impact on safety? It does not. -- the first things. You are getting a | :03:38. | :03:44.
little value fish. The whole industry has to take this area | :03:44. | :03:49.
seriously, because it is another example of the integrity of the food | :03:49. | :03:56.
supply chain being shown to be substandard. We shared our results | :03:56. | :04:01.
with the representative of many of the larger shops, who have upped | :04:01. | :04:07.
their testing regimes in the wake of the horse meat scandal. Anything | :04:07. | :04:13.
that is a food labeling issue concerns me. Can people be assured | :04:13. | :04:18.
that tests have been done on fish products just like I have been done | :04:18. | :04:22.
on beef products? Are you only reacting after evidence | :04:22. | :04:28.
materializes? We have a series of testing, otherwise he would not be | :04:28. | :04:32.
able to tell the consumer what species of fish they are buying. If | :04:32. | :04:35.
you are telling me there are problems that have been identified, | :04:35. | :04:40.
that is where we will stand up to the plate. We'll try and restore | :04:40. | :04:46.
that consumer confidence. What we find is supported by more | :04:46. | :04:50.
comprehensive research studies worldwide. It is being referred to | :04:50. | :04:53.
as fish fraud, and it is a global issue which has landed on our | :04:53. | :05:03.
:05:03. | :05:05. | ||
shores. With me is Gerry McCurdy from the Foods Standards Agency. How | :05:05. | :05:15.
:05:15. | :05:15. | ||
alarmed are you about these tests? would not use the word alarmed. I am | :05:15. | :05:19.
surprised that the suppliers have not been able to demonstrate the | :05:19. | :05:23.
authenticity of the products that they have put on the market and | :05:23. | :05:30.
consumers are being misled once again. Do you call it fish fraud? | :05:30. | :05:39.
Anything that misleads the consumer can be called a fraudulent activity. | :05:39. | :05:45.
It is unacceptable. How often do you test fish products? Let's be clear | :05:45. | :05:54.
about to does the testing and who does the enforcing on this. District | :05:54. | :06:01.
councils have a sampling programme, and around 2500 samples of food are | :06:01. | :06:06.
sampled each year. Not all of them are fish, but a proportion of them | :06:06. | :06:11.
are. On occasions, we do get evidence of substitution, and the | :06:11. | :06:15.
District Council and environmental health departments follow up on | :06:15. | :06:20.
that. Do you think the checking out is rigorous enough? The Foods | :06:20. | :06:26.
Standards Agency will monitor the system along with police, but it is | :06:26. | :06:30.
the responsibility of the business operators to ensure that the | :06:30. | :06:35.
products they put on the market are safe, packaged and labeled | :06:35. | :06:42.
properly, said that consumers are not misled. -- so that consumers are | :06:42. | :06:49.
not misled. Thank you for joining us this evening. A controversial peace | :06:49. | :06:52.
and conflict resolution centre at the former Maze Prison site has been | :06:52. | :06:59.
given the go ahead by planners. There have been years of political | :06:59. | :07:02.
disagreement about the Maze and the wrangling may not be over yet, with | :07:02. | :07:08.
the DUP saying they will have a veto on what will be seen at the centre. | :07:08. | :07:13.
The walls came down at the Maze at some time ago. Now, the 350 acres of | :07:13. | :07:18.
land are set to become a key part of Northern Ireland's future, not just | :07:18. | :07:23.
its past. This is how it used to look. But soon, the former prison | :07:23. | :07:29.
site will look like this, with an H block retained, to World War II | :07:29. | :07:35.
aircraft hangers on display, both within walking distance of a new | :07:35. | :07:39.
conflict resolution centre. The multi million pounds building will | :07:39. | :07:43.
have conference facilities and meeting rooms. Planning permission | :07:43. | :07:47.
was granted today. It is a significant milestone, but it is not | :07:48. | :07:53.
the end of the political wrangling. Questions remain. Exactly how will | :07:53. | :07:58.
the H block be presented? What about tourists who will be involved? What | :07:58. | :08:08.
story will be told? Me and my six comrades are prepared. Raymond | :08:08. | :08:13.
McCartney was a prisoner who went on strike for 53 days. He is now a Sinn | :08:13. | :08:22.
Fein MLA, with a strong view on the MLA maize product. -- project. | :08:22. | :08:30.
have always said that those who are making history with us, those people | :08:30. | :08:37.
can make informed judgments. But the message from the DUP is blunt. | :08:37. | :08:41.
are clear that what ever happens, it will not be about Laura fighting | :08:42. | :08:47.
terrorism. If you are not happy with the final -- it will not be about | :08:48. | :08:53.
glorifying terrorism? If you are not happy with the final... What about | :08:53. | :08:58.
the economics? Is there a market for the new Mesa site? We asked tourists | :08:58. | :09:06.
in Belfast city centre. -- the new Maze Prison site. We have not been | :09:06. | :09:11.
to hell fast before but we probably would. It would be great to see | :09:11. | :09:15.
something about the presence beside just the complex themselves. I think | :09:15. | :09:21.
it would be a good thing. We are French and we just know a little. | :09:21. | :09:27.
would be a good thing. Anything that can result conflict is a good thing. | :09:27. | :09:31.
There seems to be little doubt that people want to come to the Maze. | :09:31. | :09:36.
What we do not know is exactly what they will see. As the political | :09:36. | :09:42.
wrangling enough to scupper the whole project? In theory, it yes. We | :09:42. | :09:48.
remember what happened to the Mesa Stadium project. The pieces system | :09:48. | :09:55.
-- centre is more advanced but there is still more to work out. The DUP | :09:55. | :10:00.
and Sinn Fein have been arguing on the airwaves all day. Tonight, a | :10:00. | :10:03.
statement trying to calm everyone down from the First Minister saying | :10:03. | :10:07.
that it would be all right on the night. My sense is that it probably | :10:08. | :10:13.
will be but there will be some bumps on the way. Segei you think tensions | :10:13. | :10:18.
will not poison the relationships -- so do you think tensions will not | :10:18. | :10:28.
:10:28. | :10:30. | ||
poison the relationships? It is almost political deja vu. Here we | :10:30. | :10:34.
are, ten years after the prison closed, and we are still talking | :10:35. | :10:41.
about this. A former DUP election candidate who admitted being | :10:41. | :10:44.
involved in a racist pipe-bomb attack has been sent to jail. John | :10:45. | :10:47.
Smyth Jr from Rockfield Heights near Ballymena will spend three years in | :10:48. | :10:54.
custody. Our north-east reporter was at the court in Antrim. Sent to jail | :10:54. | :10:59.
for his part in what the judge called a cowardly and despicable | :10:59. | :11:05.
act, and this was eight, a pipe bomb attack in October 2011. Mr Smyth | :11:05. | :11:15.
:11:15. | :11:19. | ||
said he did not plant the device but admitted that he made it. It will | :11:19. | :11:23.
just make me more determined to succeed. These attacks are not | :11:23. | :11:31.
welcomed in our community. But it turned out that Mr Smyth was the one | :11:31. | :11:38.
making the bomb. When first question, he denied involvement, but | :11:38. | :11:43.
he later pleaded guilty when confronted with overwhelming | :11:43. | :11:47.
forensic evidence. It was a detail revisited during his sentencing | :11:47. | :11:54.
today at Antrim County court. The -- Antrim Crown Court. The court heard | :11:55. | :11:58.
that there was proved beyond doubt that the materials used in the bomb | :11:58. | :12:03.
were the same found in the home of Ted two. The judge said there were | :12:03. | :12:09.
mitigating factors in the case. -- of Mr Smyth. The judges said that | :12:09. | :12:13.
there were mitigating factors in the case. He said that while Mr Smyth | :12:14. | :12:22.
did not plant the bomb, he had knowledge about the people who did. | :12:22. | :12:26.
The judge said that in giving his sentence it must reflect the fact | :12:26. | :12:30.
that this device could have caused death or serious injury. For that | :12:30. | :12:35.
reason, he was told he will serve the full three years in custody | :12:35. | :12:42.
before he is released on license. The 69-year-old man who was killed | :12:42. | :12:45.
in a three car collision near Claudy last night was David Richie who was | :12:45. | :12:49.
from the Londonderry area. Another man and a woman who were hurt in the | :12:49. | :12:55.
crash. It's thought their injuries are not life-threatening. Two men in | :12:55. | :12:57.
their 20s have been arrested in connection with the incident which | :12:57. | :13:04.
was close to Burntollet Bridge. Still to come this evening: Welcome | :13:04. | :13:14.
:13:14. | :13:18. | ||
back. The head of a local charity gets a surprise. It has emerged that | :13:18. | :13:24.
all 108 Stormont MLA's are insured at taxpayers expense against being | :13:24. | :13:28.
sued for libel. That is when they say something that damages someone's | :13:28. | :13:33.
reputation. The details came out after an assembly member agreed to | :13:33. | :13:40.
pay substantial libel damages to a former member. Our political | :13:40. | :13:46.
correspondent is with me now. Should we be surprised at this policy? | :13:46. | :13:52.
wasn't surprised that taxpayers were picking up the tab, -- I was | :13:52. | :13:55.
surprised that taxpayers were picking up the tab. We checked to | :13:55. | :14:00.
see if this was an unusual policy, if other elected bodies in the UK | :14:00. | :14:09.
had them, and we heard today that the Welsh government and its | :14:09. | :14:17.
ministers for libel. There is... MPs are not covered for things they say | :14:17. | :14:21.
on their blogs or on tweets or personal websites or when it comes | :14:21. | :14:26.
to promoting their parties. What reaction have you been able to get | :14:26. | :14:31.
today? I spoke to a former MLA from Alliance, and he said that he was | :14:31. | :14:36.
concerned that this kind of policy could make MLA's careless about what | :14:37. | :14:42.
they said when they appeared on television or the radio. I also | :14:42. | :14:48.
spoke to a lawyer who likened this to a driver having insurance. | :14:48. | :14:53.
Because we all have car insurance, we do not go around trying to have | :14:53. | :14:57.
car accidents. I do not think this will make any individual feel they | :14:57. | :15:01.
have carte blanche to say what they do and wish. Nobody wants to have to | :15:01. | :15:09.
go through a very public court proceedings. What has the assembly | :15:09. | :15:15.
said? The assembly said it was required by law to have insurance | :15:15. | :15:21.
and that this label came at no -- this label cover came at no extra | :15:21. | :15:25.
expense. I said how much money -- I ask how much money had been paid out | :15:25. | :15:30.
in the previous year and they said there had been no previous claims. | :15:30. | :15:33.
Barristers acting for a Belfast couple who've been told they were | :15:33. | :15:36.
wrongly sent to prison in connection with the murder of an alleged IRA | :15:36. | :15:39.
informer today asked the Court of Appeal to reveal the contents of a | :15:39. | :15:42.
secret dossier of material that led to the public prosecution service | :15:42. | :15:47.
changing its mind. The PPS has said the convictions should be quashed, | :15:47. | :15:51.
but the reasons kept secret. Lawyers for the couple say that would be a | :15:51. | :15:54.
cover up. They claim the case involves the activities of another, | :15:54. | :16:03.
more high ranking IRA informer. An alleged IRA informer was shot dead | :16:03. | :16:11.
in West Belfast in February, 1989. A Belfast couple were convicted of | :16:11. | :16:19.
falsely imprisoning him before he was killed. James Martin was also | :16:19. | :16:23.
convicted of terrorist activities, and spent six years imprisonment, | :16:23. | :16:27.
his wife spent three years. Last year the public properties in | :16:27. | :16:35.
service said they would have never been charged. A lawyer for the PPS | :16:35. | :16:41.
to the Court of Appeal that they accepted that the convictions should | :16:41. | :16:46.
be quashed, and the couple did not have a fair trial, but the PPS does | :16:46. | :16:50.
not want the couple to be told why its position has been changed. It | :16:50. | :16:54.
wants the court to give a closed judgement, meaning the material will | :16:54. | :16:59.
remain secret. A barrister for James Martin said he, and the wider | :16:59. | :17:06.
public, has a right to know what the material is. Sean Devine told the | :17:06. | :17:10.
three judges that there is an individual at the centre this case. | :17:10. | :17:17.
He said if the speculation is correct, a case of one agent of the | :17:17. | :17:24.
state executing another agent of the state, to enhance a position in a | :17:24. | :17:27.
paramilitary organisation to provide higher grade inflammation, that | :17:27. | :17:32.
needs to be stated. He said if the Court of Appeal fails to reveal the | :17:33. | :17:37.
details of what went wrong, it would effectively be endorsing that | :17:37. | :17:42.
behaviour. He added, if the court refuses to one cover this kind of | :17:42. | :17:47.
behaviour, it will remain uncovered, and they will have been a cover-up. | :17:47. | :17:52.
The prosecution argued that reading the secret material could cause | :17:52. | :18:02.
:18:02. | :18:02. | ||
long-term damage. The judges reserve the decision. | :18:02. | :18:08.
The Royal British Legion has confirmed they are opposed to aid EU | :18:08. | :18:14.
P proposal to fly the union type every day at the Senate half next to | :18:14. | :18:19.
the City Hall. The council does I did the union flag would only fly | :18:19. | :18:23.
over the City Hall on designated days. In a statement, the Legion | :18:23. | :18:31.
says, the garden of remembrance is sacrosanct, and they don't want to | :18:31. | :18:36.
become politicised. The Dalai Lama has returned to | :18:36. | :18:40.
Londonderry as a guest of the charity, Children in Crossfire. The | :18:40. | :18:42.
Tibetan spiritual leader is patron of the Derry-based charity which | :18:42. | :18:45.
works overseas with poor and impoverished communities. One of the | :18:45. | :18:48.
highlights of his visit was a symbolic walk across the Peace | :18:48. | :18:53.
Bridge with hundreds of Protestant and Catholic children. I don't think | :18:53. | :18:59.
that any charity could ask for anything more than someone who is an | :18:59. | :19:07.
icon of peace, forgive men's -- forgiveness, it is a fantastic thing | :19:07. | :19:16.
for the work we do. Still to come, why the planned 25 | :19:16. | :19:21.
million upgrade of Windsor Park could be jeopardised. | :19:21. | :19:24.
Commercial fishing is, officially, the most dangerous job we can do in | :19:24. | :19:29.
these islands. A fisherman has a one in 20 chance of being killed at | :19:29. | :19:32.
work. When tragedy strikes, the community invariably turns to the | :19:32. | :19:35.
Fishermen's Mission just like the one in Kilkeel in County Down. Our | :19:35. | :19:38.
reporter in the southeast Gordon Adair has been speaking to a group | :19:38. | :19:45.
of women at the harbour who have recorded a CD to raise funds. You've | :19:45. | :19:55.
heard of the military wives - these are the fish-wives. | :19:55. | :20:00.
DC has given much, indeed possibly everything to this town, that it has | :20:00. | :20:09.
taken as well. At the lifeboat station, the flag is at half-mast | :20:09. | :20:15.
for respect of people lost at sea, this one has hit the family hard. | :20:16. | :20:19.
Tragedies like that, which struck the Green family, have a massive | :20:19. | :20:25.
impact on the community. I have three sons who are fish and men, and | :20:25. | :20:30.
every time they go out, you worry about them, and you never know which | :20:30. | :20:38.
way the sea is going to be, it can be very calm, and it can get very | :20:38. | :20:44.
rough. This is Jane Dalby, she is from Hastings in Essex, and three | :20:44. | :20:50.
years ago, she lost her husband, Colin, at sea. Now she plans to help | :20:50. | :20:54.
everyone in a similar position, and the ladies here, they intend to help | :20:54. | :21:02.
her. Later this month, they will join women from fishing families | :21:02. | :21:10.
across the UK to record a CD in aid of fishermen. We love music, we are | :21:10. | :21:20.
:21:20. | :21:21. | ||
involved in the choir, for the purpose of it all, it was something | :21:21. | :21:26.
great, they'll have their own to tell, it is something to raise the | :21:26. | :21:31.
awareness of the mission. Especially here, where the majority of people | :21:31. | :21:36.
are fish and men, not farmers. You have a sisterhood, commission tries | :21:36. | :21:41.
to support their wives, even when there is not a disaster, but we are | :21:41. | :21:46.
a community which looks at each other, and we have a strong bond | :21:46. | :21:50.
between the mission and efficient immunity. So, what song will they | :21:50. | :21:59.
sing? That it seems is a closely guarded secret. Perhaps something | :22:00. | :22:09.
:22:10. | :22:16. | ||
from Seal. It is top secret? won't tell today. | :22:16. | :22:23.
Authorities in Dublin are investigating the theft of four | :22:23. | :22:26.

An upgrade of Windsor Park football stadium costing 25 million pounds | :22:42. | :22:45.
could be jeopardised by a legal challenge to the funding plan. | :22:45. | :22:50.
Austin O'Callaghan is here with news of that. | :22:50. | :22:53.
Crusaders football club are asking for a judicial review of the the | :22:53. | :22:58.
plans to upgrade the ground. north Belfast club say the | :22:58. | :23:02.
arrangements breach European Union competition laws. Crusaders claim | :23:02. | :23:05.
that the way the Windsor Park project is being funded would be a | :23:05. | :23:08.
form of state aid to Linfield, who are one of Crusaders main rivals and | :23:08. | :23:18.
:23:18. | :23:21. | ||
the current stadium owners. This is what it is hoped the new | :23:21. | :23:26.

and leisure, which was passed in seminary. Worth was -- work was | :23:44. | :23:49.
opposed to start in September, but their rival club has said it is | :23:49. | :23:53.
state funding. They feel the upgrade paid for by the government will | :23:53. | :24:00.
create unfair revenue for Linfield, with them also receiving substantial | :24:00. | :24:06.
ground rent. Alongside those other benefits, they estimate it is up to | :24:06. | :24:16.
:24:16. | :24:17. | ||
0.5 million a season, which gives them a significant advantage. | :24:17. | :24:20.
Crusaders have also alleged a lack of transparency around the funding, | :24:21. | :24:27.
with their barrister seeking an outline of the business case. At the | :24:27. | :24:31.
High Court, the Irish football Association expressed concern in | :24:31. | :24:37.
regard to the possible implications of the protracted legal case, saying | :24:37. | :24:40.
it could jeopardise all of the funding for local football. The | :24:40. | :24:46.
redevelopment is part of a wider 110 million plan to upgrade | :24:46. | :24:55.
Ulster's rugby ground at Ravenhill. It is understood that the funding | :24:55. | :25:02.
will be unaffected by the legal challenge. The High Court hearing | :25:02. | :25:08.

Now the weather forecast here's Now the weather forecast here's | :26:44. | :26:50.
Barra. We had some hefty April showers today, some of them quite | :26:51. | :26:57.
sharp. Aggressively it will turn much drier as we go through the | :26:57. | :27:03.
night, a little chilly in the countryside, we could see a touch of | :27:03. | :27:07.
Frost, the odd icy stretch. Most towns and cities will stay above | :27:07. | :27:14.
freezing. Tomorrow, a much better day, certainly more settled, to | :27:14. | :27:19.
begin with, tonnes of dry weather around. The sun will come out from | :27:19. | :27:23.
the beginning of the morning, a dry start, the big thing will be the | :27:23. | :27:29.
wind, much lighter than today. A handful of showers around, not many | :27:29. | :27:34.
in the forecast, so if you get one or two, you will very unlucky. | :27:34. | :27:41.
Temperatures up to 12 degrees. Where there is good sunshine, we could see | :27:41. | :27:48.
a high of 14 degrees. Not too bad. One or two macro showers continuing | :27:48. | :27:52.
into the second part of tomorrow, but not a bad end to the day, with | :27:52. | :27:57.
some brighter weather, and some sunshine tomorrow evening. Tomorrow | :27:57. | :28:02.
night, much like tonight, a chilly night, in the countryside | :28:02. | :28:07.
particularly, in towns and cities, between the 3-5 degrees. That will | :28:07. | :28:13.
give us a dry start to the weekend, certainly for most, especially in | :28:13. | :28:17.
the east, it will stay pretty decent for most of the day. Further west, | :28:17. | :28:26.
the cloud will gradually drifting, bringing stronger winds. A bit | :28:26. | :28:35.
milder, 13-14d. If you plan any outdoor events, did on Saturday, the | :28:35. | :28:40.
best day of the weekend. Sunday will be more unsettled, wet and windy, | :28:40. | :28:46.
unsettled going into Monday. Yesterday we brought you the story | :28:46. | :28:50.
