Newsline. Families of people killed by soldiers sue the Chief Constable | :00:34. | :00:40.
over failings by the Historical Enquiries Team. 40 years on, police | :00:40. | :00:44.
re-open their investigation into this teenager's death. The stories | :00:44. | :00:47.
behind the statistics of the Childline calls - the latest in our | :00:47. | :00:52.
series on people who turn their lives around. Police investigate the | :00:52. | :00:57.
sudden deaths of two 25 years and going strong - just what's the | :00:57. | :01:05.
appeal of the West Belfast Feile? People at The biggest talking point | :01:05. | :01:09.
in Gaelic football this weekend was not on the pitch, it was in a | :01:09. | :01:12.
television studio. Was Joe Brolly right or wrong? Today we have had | :01:12. | :01:16.
the best of the UK's weather. The mix of sunshine and showers set to | :01:16. | :01:23.
continue for the next few days. The police are investigating two | :01:23. | :01:28.
sudden deaths in Fermanagh. Both happened in the village of | :01:28. | :01:32.
Lisnaskea. Our reporter in the south-west, Julian Fowler, is live | :01:32. | :01:42.
:01:42. | :01:54. | ||
there this evening. A short time ago, the police released the names | :01:54. | :02:03.
of the two young people who died. They were a 29-year-old mother of a | :02:03. | :02:10.
young child originally from, Roy. The second was a 36-year-old. | :02:10. | :02:14.
Although they share the same surname, it is not thought they were | :02:14. | :02:19.
related. It is not yet clear if the two deaths are related in any way. | :02:20. | :02:26.
Bolivia was found yesterday evening in a house she was visiting. The | :02:26. | :02:29.
post-mortem examination has now been carried out and her remains have | :02:29. | :02:33.
been released back to the families. Shortly after midday, a second | :02:33. | :02:43.
:02:43. | :02:43. | ||
sudden death was reported to police about a mile away. I visited the | :02:43. | :02:47.
scene there a short time ago. The family were there and obviously very | :02:47. | :02:57.
upset and shocked. Very sudden deaths, anyway that these deaths are | :02:57. | :03:03.
linked or caused for both deaths as Mike it is still too early to say. | :03:03. | :03:07.
Police say they are investigations are at an early stage but all lines | :03:07. | :03:12.
of enquiry are being followed. It is not clear if the deaths are linked | :03:12. | :03:17.
or just a tragic coincidence. We don't know yet if drugs played a | :03:17. | :03:21.
role but that is certainly one line of enquiry that the police are | :03:21. | :03:27.
pursuing. It is obviously very shocking and distressing for the | :03:27. | :03:29.
families involved. Politicians from all on the parties here have | :03:29. | :03:35.
released statements, expressing their shock and sadness at this | :03:35. | :03:38.
tragic loss of life and saying their thoughts are with the families at | :03:38. | :03:42.
this time. The families of 20 people killed by | :03:42. | :03:45.
soldiers during the Troubles are suing the Chief Constable after an | :03:45. | :03:47.
inspection report said the Historical Enquiries Team failed to | :03:47. | :03:55.
investigate the deaths properly. The leading oversight body for UK | :03:55. | :03:58.
policy, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, last month said the | :03:58. | :04:08.
:04:08. | :04:12. | ||
HET's approach to killings by soldiers was illegal. | :04:12. | :04:18.
Soldiers killed around 300 people during the troubles. Investigations | :04:18. | :04:21.
by the Historical Enquiries Team into the circumstances of death | :04:21. | :04:25.
caused by the military were suspended last month after an | :04:25. | :04:29.
inspection report strongly criticised its approach. Her Majesty | :04:30. | :04:37.
's Inspectorate of Constabulary said they were being investigated less | :04:37. | :04:43.
rigourously and breached government 's regulations on human right. | :04:43. | :04:47.
of the things we were very surprised about is not that this was a breach | :04:47. | :04:50.
in practice, in other words that people were airing from the policy. | :04:50. | :04:58.
This was said in the policy wrongly. In October 1970 one, two | :04:58. | :05:02.
sisters who were members of the IRA were shot dead by soldiers on the | :05:02. | :05:07.
Falls Road in west Belfast. They were not armed wing shot in the back | :05:07. | :05:11.
of a car. One of them was this lady, a 30-year-old mother of four. | :05:11. | :05:17.
Her daughter asked the HET to investigate. A few years ago, she | :05:17. | :05:21.
was told the review was completed but has still not received details | :05:21. | :05:30.
of the findings. She attended a meeting in Belfast when the verdict | :05:30. | :05:40.
:05:40. | :05:40. | ||
was released. I honestly just wanted to cry. It is heartbreaking. But | :05:40. | :05:44.
they have put the families through this and now we have to go through | :05:44. | :05:53.
it all again. Her family is now one of 20 suing the Chief Constable. | :05:53. | :05:59.
is just not fair. We are entitled to justice and to know the truth about | :05:59. | :06:05.
what happened. A campaign group working with relatives of people | :06:05. | :06:11.
killed by soldiers says it believes more may join the legal action. | :06:11. | :06:17.
PSNI went to Europe and promised the ministers that they would put in | :06:17. | :06:20.
place a compliant investigative process that was independent to deal | :06:20. | :06:26.
with British army killings but what they did is, they have lied and | :06:27. | :06:32.
engaged in a cynical exercise, bringing the families into a process | :06:32. | :06:36.
that was deemed to be illegal. A solicitor acting for the families | :06:36. | :06:40.
said the action was being taken to hold the Chief Constable to a kind | :06:40. | :06:46.
but the HET Bosman killings. In a statement, the PSNI said they had | :06:46. | :06:49.
not received notification of any legal proceedings. It pointed out | :06:49. | :06:55.
that cases involving soldiers are to be re-examined in line with the | :06:55. | :07:00.
investigation manual. A man is in a critical condition in | :07:00. | :07:04.
hospital following an assault in Omagh. The attack took place in John | :07:04. | :07:09.
Street at around 8:00 last night. Three people have been arrested. | :07:09. | :07:13.
A man has been arrested by gardai investigating the murder of a South | :07:13. | :07:18.
Armagh man in 2007. Paul Quinn, who was 21 from Cullyhanna, was abducted | :07:18. | :07:24.
and beaten at farm outbuildings in County Monaghan. The detained man is | :07:24. | :07:30.
in his early 20s and was arrested in County Louth yesterday morning. | :07:30. | :07:34.
The investigation into the murder of a young woman in County Tyrone 40 | :07:34. | :07:38.
years ago has been reopened. Her body was found at the bottom of a | :07:38. | :07:42.
quarry after a night out in Aughnacloy. Police say they have new | :07:42. | :07:51.
lines of enquiry. This lady was just 18 years old when | :07:51. | :07:57.
she was fined murdered in 1973. She had spent the evening at a charity | :07:57. | :08:01.
dance in Aughnacloy on the 30th of March. She was seen leaving the | :08:01. | :08:06.
venue with a young man just after 1am. Five hours later, her body was | :08:06. | :08:11.
found short distance away in a quarry, partially clothed. What | :08:11. | :08:19.
happened when they reached the end of the quarry? The signs point to | :08:19. | :08:24.
the fact that she fell to her death. It was likely that she was either | :08:24. | :08:29.
dead or dying when she reached the bottom. Days afterwards, police said | :08:30. | :08:33.
they had a good response to appeals for information about 40 years on, | :08:33. | :08:39.
the killer has not yet been caught. She arrived just after 9:00 and was | :08:39. | :08:43.
observed at around one in the morning outside in the company of a | :08:43. | :08:51.
meal. I need to identify who that meal is. She was also seen walking | :08:51. | :08:57.
along the road towards a car park at the quarry. This is a well-known | :08:57. | :09:00.
area for courting couples and I believe that is where they were | :09:00. | :09:04.
going to. The area has obviously changed in the last 40 years and | :09:04. | :09:11.
what used to be the quarry is now a landfill site. I DUP Councillor in | :09:11. | :09:18.
the area still remembers the killing 12. My fear is that the family are | :09:18. | :09:24.
going to be disappointed with old saw as being opened again and their | :09:24. | :09:31.
hopes raised and disappointment at the end of it. Is successful and | :09:31. | :09:35.
someone is brought to justice, it will remove from the community and | :09:35. | :09:40.
murder. Detectives want to speak to anyone who remembers seeing someone | :09:40. | :09:45.
with dust and dirt on their clothes following the death. | :09:45. | :09:48.
We heard recently on the programme about the volunteers at Childline | :09:48. | :09:53.
who take 10,000 calls a month in Belfast alone. This evening, someone | :09:53. | :09:58.
who phoned the charity tells us how that contact saved her life. Tara | :09:58. | :10:02.
Mills met the young woman who explained what was going on in her | :10:02. | :10:12.
:10:12. | :10:12. | ||
life at the time. I was experiencing a lot of | :10:12. | :10:16.
difficult things at home. I had grown up with domestic violence, I | :10:16. | :10:22.
had an eating disorder, I self harmed, my family pet had just died | :10:22. | :10:29.
and my mum had been diagnosed with cancer. I felt lost and scared. | :10:30. | :10:34.
most of us, it is hard to understand how a child could feel so alone but | :10:34. | :10:38.
sadly, stories like this one are all in a days work for the Childline | :10:38. | :10:46.
volunteers. Thankfully, the help and support they offer is invaluable. | :10:46. | :10:50.
Even in times of crisis, when this young woman took an overdose, | :10:50. | :10:59.
Childline called the authorities. hated them for breaking my | :10:59. | :11:03.
confidentiality but at the same time, it should be that they cared | :11:03. | :11:12.
and wanted to help me. What do you think about what they did now? | :11:12. | :11:16.
could say thank you to the person who did it, I would. I'm any respect | :11:16. | :11:23.
them for doing that. It just gave me confidence that I would recommend | :11:23. | :11:29.
them to people because they really do care. The confidentiality of | :11:29. | :11:34.
Childline is paramount but so, too, is the safety of their collars and | :11:34. | :11:38.
bringing in emergency services doesn't just save lives. It can also | :11:38. | :11:44.
highlight it to the family. It can help the family realise the extent | :11:44. | :11:50.
of those emotions. They can then, hopefully, react to that and provide | :11:50. | :11:56.
some support. The statistics are startling, children as young as five | :11:56. | :12:06.
:12:06. | :12:10. | ||
have been known to come and call. Coming up on the programme, find out | :12:10. | :12:20.
why our reporter got all hot and bothered. That was tough going. I | :12:20. | :12:30.
:12:30. | :12:33. | ||
was it for you? Was a difficult? Yes. Very difficult for me as well. | :12:33. | :12:36.
The Feile an Phobail in West Belfast has reached a milestone in its | :12:37. | :12:39.
history, a quarter of a century of entertainment and political | :12:39. | :12:44.
discussion. It originally began as a ploy to divert local people from | :12:44. | :12:48.
street protests towards community events. Our arts correspondent | :12:48. | :12:51.
Maggie Taggart has covered many of the highlights over the years and | :12:51. | :12:59.
her report looks at the past and present. | :12:59. | :13:05.
I remember well the day when I met a girl band at the moment, atomic | :13:05. | :13:14.
Kitten. Not to mention the uproar in 2003 with girls aloud. The first | :13:14. | :13:20.
programme in 1988 was a humble affair. It featured a period of | :13:20. | :13:23.
swimming gala and snicker. Now, the thick programme reflects its status | :13:23. | :13:29.
as a huge event with government funding. It all grew from the need | :13:29. | :13:33.
to take attention away from West Belfast 's the image in those | :13:33. | :13:38.
troubled days. We chose the date around the 9th of August because | :13:38. | :13:42.
traditionally, that was the anniversary of internment and people | :13:42. | :13:52.
:13:52. | :13:53. | ||
would come out. The thriving festival has been a mix of popular | :13:53. | :13:55.
culture and visual arts but it has not been afraid to be | :13:55. | :14:02.
controversial. The festival has grown in size and reputation over | :14:02. | :14:07.
the last 25 years. Despite the presence of bands like girls aloud, | :14:07. | :14:11.
it still retains a highly politicised element for those who | :14:11. | :14:21.
:14:21. | :14:25. | ||
want that. The political attitudes in West Belfast informs the culture | :14:25. | :14:31.
of the events and that distinguishes it from the festival at Queens or | :14:31. | :14:36.
any other festival in Ireland. anniversary year has its own | :14:36. | :14:46.
:14:46. | :14:46. | ||
highlights with faithless on Friday, carnival parade and Jordan O'Keeffe. | :14:46. | :14:51.
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is coming back to Londonderry. | :14:51. | :14:54.
The event was hailed as an outstanding success last year with | :14:54. | :14:57.
more than 100,000 people attending the ten-day festival. It is the | :14:57. | :15:00.
world's longest ocean race, sailing 40,000 miles and taking in six | :15:00. | :15:04.
continents. It is costing Derry City Council over 1 million but the | :15:04. | :15:11.
Mayor insists it will be money well spent. | :15:11. | :15:16.
After the hugely successful stopover last year, the Clipper Round the | :15:17. | :15:23.
World Yacht Race is coming back twice in 2014 and 2016. Why are you | :15:23. | :15:28.
back again? We are back because it was such a successful visit last | :15:28. | :15:31.
time. Everybody loved it and it went very well because the city got | :15:31. | :15:38.
behind it and make it work. I hugely challenging race? 40,000 miles | :15:38. | :15:45.
across all the oceans of the world is tough but these are amateurs. | :15:45. | :15:54.
can you justify the financial outlay because it is quite costly? It is | :15:54. | :16:00.
costly but last year 's event brought in over 3 million so it | :16:00. | :16:03.
stacks up financially and is a great way for the city to showcase itself | :16:03. | :16:12.
to the wider community. The boat taking part will be called the Derry | :16:12. | :16:17.
Londonderry and there are still cases for you to sign up! | :16:17. | :16:21.
Rather you and me! Still to come: Thomas Kane reports | :16:21. | :16:24.
on the contentious tackle in the All Ireland quarterfinals that is the | :16:24. | :16:29.
talk of the GAA. Commentator Joe Brolly has had his | :16:29. | :16:32.
say. I will be speaking live to a three-time winner who thinks Tyrone | :16:32. | :16:40.
were clinical, not cynical. One of the most physically demanding | :16:41. | :16:44.
events in the World Police and Fire Games is the stair race. | :16:44. | :16:48.
Firefighters in full uniform run upstairs against the clock. One of | :16:48. | :16:51.
the competitors who took place in the event yesterday was treated for | :16:51. | :17:00.
heat exhaustion. Our reporter Helen Jones went along to the event which | :17:01. | :17:10.
:17:11. | :17:11. | ||
was closed to the public. Running up a few stairs, they say, | :17:11. | :17:16.
how difficult can it be? Derry. It was in the tallest building in | :17:17. | :17:24.
Northern Ireland. You will put on the set of her thigh woman and you | :17:24. | :17:31.
will have a mask on and you have two go upstairs, 28 flights. That would | :17:31. | :17:37.
take me all day, how long will it take you? I think just three or four | :17:37. | :17:43.
minutes. A tough challenge considering you are carrying quite a | :17:43. | :17:50.
few extra pounds. I'm just here to do my personal best. I get a medal, | :17:50. | :17:57.
happy days but if not, I will enjoy myself. One competitor hopes to do | :17:57. | :18:03.
it in under four minutes? I would hope to beat her! 105 competitors in | :18:03. | :18:12.
so dear. Climbing 550 stairs. 27 stories. Some competitors are in | :18:12. | :18:20.
their 50s. At the top of the building, helping hand. I can | :18:20. | :18:28.
confidently say I did my best. I am happy with that. He did it in three | :18:28. | :18:35.
minutes, 16 seconds. The fastest was two minutes, 45 seconds. A chance to | :18:35. | :18:41.
cool down. It is challenging. That was tough going. Hi what was it for | :18:41. | :18:48.
you, was a difficult? Yes, difficult. It was very difficult for | :18:48. | :18:57.
me as well! Donegal's reign as All Ireland | :18:57. | :19:04.
Champions is over but that isn't what everyone is talking about. | :19:04. | :19:07.
Most big matches produced talking points, but the one which captured | :19:07. | :19:10.
most attention at the weekend centred on the comments of the | :19:10. | :19:13.
former Derry Gaelic footballer, Joe Brolly. He was highly critical of | :19:13. | :19:16.
the manner in which Tyrone beat Monaghan, describing their play as | :19:16. | :19:20.
cynical and disgraceful. If you missed it, here is a flavour of what | :19:20. | :19:29.
he said. People are saying things like, it is | :19:29. | :19:35.
within the rules. It is not in the rules, it was a total disgrace. | :19:35. | :19:42.
Nobody has stood up for Tyrone and I have in this studio when they were | :19:42. | :19:45.
getting all sorts of abuse from you but I will not be standing up for | :19:46. | :19:51.
that, that was an absolute disgrace. The black card is the only the start | :19:52. | :19:58.
of an urgent process that is required. There is no sport, no | :19:58. | :20:05.
other sport where that is permitted. It was an absolute disgrace. I want | :20:05. | :20:08.
nothing to do with it. This is what Tyrone manager Mickey | :20:08. | :20:12.
Harte had to say when it was put to him that his team's style of play | :20:12. | :20:18.
was cynical. I would prefer that people look at | :20:18. | :20:22.
the good parts in Gaelic football that exist today and the teams that | :20:22. | :20:25.
played with great fervour and played within the rules as much as | :20:25. | :20:31.
possible. There are going to be errors committed by both teams. When | :20:31. | :20:36.
you used to see what was being committed and they were so many | :20:36. | :20:46.
:20:46. | :20:48. | ||
injuries, I am surprised. Let's go live now to Thomas Kane in | :20:48. | :20:54.
south Belfast. To give you an idea of just how big | :20:54. | :20:59.
an impact his comments made over the past couple of days, almost a | :20:59. | :21:02.
quarter of a million people have already down loaded and watched it | :21:02. | :21:06.
online. You have won three of Irelands with him, what was your | :21:06. | :21:16.
reaction? Pure disbelief, I know Joe Brolly well and he is usually very | :21:16. | :21:20.
entertaining but I felt yesterday, it seems as if he lost the plot and | :21:20. | :21:26.
went completely over the top on a point that most of us would share | :21:26. | :21:31.
with henna but the language he used was just not right for the | :21:31. | :21:37.
circumstances. Was it to personal? It was to personal and to imply that | :21:37. | :21:44.
Sean is not a man on public TV. He will not get the floor to speak to | :21:44. | :21:51.
those people and correct that opinion. He was using words like | :21:51. | :21:55.
disgusting about the people of Tyrone and that, to me, is very | :21:55. | :22:01.
insulting. The incident itself, it was not the worst incident that took | :22:01. | :22:08.
place. There was a player fouled the ball to stop it going over the goal | :22:08. | :22:13.
and none of those were picked up so it does seem to be targeted abuse. | :22:13. | :22:17.
Whether you agree with him or not, it is a debate that has to be had | :22:17. | :22:23.
within GAA? Absolutely and shonky might yesterday and said he is in | :22:23. | :22:30.
favour of the black card. It is long known that that particular file in | :22:30. | :22:34.
Gaelic football has the right punishment but every team has | :22:34. | :22:39.
suffered it and every team has gained from it and to suddenly go | :22:39. | :22:43.
hot on it like yesterday, it seems unfair. Joe Brolly said it should | :22:43. | :22:50.
not be taught towards children but this is a new thing -- is not a new | :22:50. | :23:00.
:23:00. | :23:01. | ||
thing in Gaelic? Again, in terms of the punishment fitting the crime, in | :23:01. | :23:06.
soccer, they have the red Row. It still happens because when you have | :23:06. | :23:11.
a competitive player, they are going to do everything to stop the goal. | :23:11. | :23:19.
You don't see the teams than bustard like Tyrone was. It is a debate | :23:19. | :23:23.
which will go on and on. There was success for two of our | :23:23. | :23:27.
local motorcycle riders at the weekend. Eugene Laverty had two | :23:27. | :23:29.
podium finishes at the world Superbike round at Silverstone. | :23:29. | :23:37.
Jonathan Rea had the result of the day. | :23:37. | :23:41.
Relief for Jonathan Rea. In a season without a victory, it all came good | :23:41. | :23:46.
at his home ground. In a rain affected first race, the Ballyclare | :23:46. | :23:51.
rider established a lead and never looked back. Tim Bridge boss Mike | :23:51. | :23:55.
Eugene Laverty battled his way through the field to second place | :23:55. | :23:58.
but Jonathan Rea cruised around the final corner to savour a win that | :23:58. | :24:08.
:24:08. | :24:10. | ||
meant more than most. So nice to get a win. It was starting to get | :24:10. | :24:18.
frustrating this year. It was looking difficult but this is the | :24:18. | :24:24.
last race before my baby is due so it was nice. All smiled for the dad | :24:24. | :24:28.
to be but it was also a big weekend for Eugene Laverty. He produced | :24:28. | :24:32.
another gutsy ride in reasonable to earn his second podium of the day. | :24:32. | :24:37.
This third place in a shortened race takes him to third in the World | :24:37. | :24:39.
Superbike Championships and within touching distance of the lead with | :24:39. | :24:45.
six rounds remain. One of today's events in the World | :24:45. | :24:52.
Police and Fire Games was the team event in freshwater angling. There | :24:52. | :24:55.
was a surprising competitor hoping to take top price for the heaviest | :24:55. | :25:01.
catch. On a rare day out of the office, the Chief Constable tried | :25:01. | :25:11.
:25:11. | :25:11. | ||
his hand at catching some trout. just had to find something that I | :25:11. | :25:16.
might have a chance in actually winning. I decided on the fishing as | :25:16. | :25:20.
I have tried it a few times but it has been a great morning. It is more | :25:20. | :25:23.
about the taking part in the wedding. | :25:23. | :25:29.
I am told that the fish will come to the surface and it is not too sunny | :25:29. | :25:33.
so I suppose today was quite a good so I suppose today was quite a good | :25:33. | :25:43.
:25:43. | :25:45. | ||
day! I want to show you a lovely picture here. This is the way things | :25:45. | :25:54.
have looked today. Look at all that reigned over Wales and England! We | :25:54. | :25:58.
got away with just a few showers and that is the way that things will | :25:58. | :26:03.
work through the rest of the evening. A dry and reasonably mild | :26:04. | :26:08.
end to the day. Overnight, a fresher feel with temperatures down to 10 | :26:08. | :26:12.
degrees. Still the chance of the odd shower overnight. As we head into | :26:12. | :26:17.
tomorrow, it is promising to be a cooler and slightly cloudy day. | :26:17. | :26:24.
There will still be some rain in the mix but not looking too bad. Most of | :26:25. | :26:29.
the rain will stay out towards the West so it will stay mainly dry | :26:30. | :26:33.
through the day with temperatures feeling a little lower than they | :26:33. | :26:41.
have done over the last couple of days. As we head into Wednesday, it | :26:41. | :26:46.
is going to be another similar sort of day. Perhaps just a little more | :26:46. | :26:50.
brightness around but again, the temperatures feeling just a little | :26:50. | :26:54.
bit cooler. There will be the chance of an odd shower here and there but | :26:54. | :27:01.
not a bad amount of brightness. The change coming towards the end of the | :27:01. | :27:06.
week, we have this Atlantic system making its way over, due to arrive | :27:06. | :27:10.
on Thursday or Friday so that means Thursday evening could have a | :27:10. | :27:17.
cloudier feel to it. Temperatures will get warmer by the time we get | :27:17. | :27:22.
towards the end of the week. The forecast is a mix of sunshine and | :27:22. | :27:30. |
