Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline: | :00:00. | :00:23.
A woman tells how she fought off a gang of sex attackers but was left | :00:24. | :00:28.
badly beaten. I have stitches. I have bruises and I was beaten like | :00:29. | :00:36.
an animal, from head to toe. Belfast City Centre traders welcome a | :00:37. | :00:39.
Council campaign to help Christmas business. | :00:40. | :00:44.
The Utility Regulator warns high prices are here to style. | :00:45. | :00:49.
A Ballymena church defends its plans for a huge development. | :00:50. | :00:52.
Shock news for motor cycle road-Is radioing fans. One of bike's biggest | :00:53. | :00:57.
names says he is taking a break from the sport. | :00:58. | :01:01.
And a wintsery theme to our weather but tonight is all about the wind. | :01:02. | :01:09.
I'll be back with the details. First, the story of a woman who has | :01:10. | :01:13.
given a shocking account of being beaten by a gang who tried to | :01:14. | :01:16.
sexually assault her early yesterday. The woman has taken the | :01:17. | :01:22.
unusual step of speaking publicly, because she says she wants to | :01:23. | :01:25.
protect other people living in the area. Donna Hawkins has been telling | :01:26. | :01:29.
our reporter, Elaine Magee, about what happened. | :01:30. | :01:35.
Bruised, about thorred and badly shaken, Donna Hawkins is comforted | :01:36. | :01:38.
at her north Belfast home by her sister. She has lived in the area | :01:39. | :01:42.
all her life and felt no danger when she left family and friends at a | :01:43. | :01:45.
social club to take the short walk home. On the way she passed three | :01:46. | :01:50.
men in this alley and says she was attacked from behind. | :01:51. | :01:57.
I was beaten like an animal from head-to-toe for no reason at all. | :01:58. | :02:05.
They tried to rape me. Which they didn't succeed to do but they kicked | :02:06. | :02:12.
me from head-to-toe and tried to destroy me. But my appeal is for | :02:13. | :02:25.
no-one out there who saw people acting suspiciously, heard activity | :02:26. | :02:29.
in that area, any taximan, anybody, no matter how small you think it is, | :02:30. | :02:36.
this is my appeal, because there are wome there are girls next week. | :02:37. | :02:41.
Somebody else's daughter, granddaughter. It could have been a | :02:42. | :02:45.
young girl coming out of a fund raiser which happened that night. | :02:46. | :02:49.
Can I ask you, Donna, what went through your mind when the attack | :02:50. | :02:53.
happened? I was just in total shock, Elaine, in total shock. I was | :02:54. | :03:00.
screaming. I screamed and I kicked and I fought and punched and this is | :03:01. | :03:05.
what I got for defending myself from being attacked by three brutal | :03:06. | :03:09.
animals. The 51-year-old mother of three | :03:10. | :03:12.
managed to get away and was treated in hospital for her injuries. She | :03:13. | :03:16.
has reported what happened to the police and says by speaking | :03:17. | :03:19.
publicly, she hopes that others won't have to go through a similar | :03:20. | :03:21.
ordeal. A suspicious object at the centre of | :03:22. | :03:31.
an alert in Armagh was what's been described as "a have Iable explosive | :03:32. | :03:38.
device" homes in Alexander ae were evacuated while the Army made the | :03:39. | :03:48.
bomb safe. 40 families in the anders Andersonstown area of Belfast had to | :03:49. | :03:54.
leave their home after a bomb alert. The trial has begun in Belfast of | :03:55. | :04:01.
Marian McGlinchey, also called Marian Price who was convicted of | :04:02. | :04:05.
bombing the old bailingy in London in the 970s. The charge against her | :04:06. | :04:10.
was to instigate a terrorist attack on Massereene barracks in west | :04:11. | :04:12.
Antrim more than four years ago. barracks in March 2009 claimed the | :04:13. | :04:28.
lives of two soldiers. Mark Quinsey and Patrick as incar were collecting | :04:29. | :04:34.
a pizza hours before they were due to be deployed to Afghanistan. The | :04:35. | :04:39.
pizza delivery man was also wounded. Two men accused of the murderers | :04:40. | :04:42.
were subsequently tried and acquitted. This case involves a | :04:43. | :04:45.
number of phonecalls made the day after the killings, claiming | :04:46. | :04:49.
responsibility. In court today was 59-year-old Marian McGlinchey, | :04:50. | :04:54.
formerly Marion Price of stockman's Avenue in Belfast. She's accused of | :04:55. | :05:01.
buying property for the purpose of terrorism, naming buying the mobile | :05:02. | :05:10.
phone used to make the calls. The call was made 24 minutes after | :05:11. | :05:14.
the phone was topped up clearing responsibility on behalf of the Real | :05:15. | :05:21.
IRA. The court was told that Marian | :05:22. | :05:25.
McGlinchey had a background and involvement in dissident republican | :05:26. | :05:30.
activity. They further assert it was unlikely she was aware the phone | :05:31. | :05:37.
would be used in this way. She was released on licence and | :05:38. | :05:41.
returned to jail when it was revoked in 20011. She was released again in | :05:42. | :05:45.
May of this year. She denies the charges against her and the case | :05:46. | :05:48.
continues again this week. Coming up later in the programme: We | :05:49. | :05:53.
visit the church whose mission to expand is causing controversy in | :05:54. | :06:00.
Ballymena. It's been a difficult year for | :06:01. | :06:04.
traders in Belfast. The latest figures suggest footfall is down 10% | :06:05. | :06:08.
on this time last year. There was welcome news for businesses today | :06:09. | :06:15.
that the City Council is spending an extra ?275,000 on a festive | :06:16. | :06:18.
promotion campaign. But, with the prospect of more | :06:19. | :06:22.
protest marches until the run-up to Christmas, Helen Jones has been | :06:23. | :06:28.
gauging the mood among traders. A boost, almost ?250,000 and just in | :06:29. | :06:35.
time for Christmas. We are hoping to animate the city, bringing people | :06:36. | :06:37.
into the city centre and having events that will encourage people to | :06:38. | :06:41.
bring their children and families in and enjoy themselves, shop in | :06:42. | :06:44.
advance of Christmas and have leisure time, use our who isty palt | :06:45. | :06:50.
facilities, restaurants and bars. -- hospitality. From straight | :06:51. | :06:54.
entertainment, street protest. Very much part and pour sell of last | :06:55. | :06:59.
year's run-up to Chris matches its impact was felt at the Christmas | :07:00. | :07:01.
market which had to close temporarily. More protests are | :07:02. | :07:06.
expected thisser yoo. It is the second year of market trading for | :07:07. | :07:09.
this business. It is going to close the market down, with the security | :07:10. | :07:12.
they had last year. It'll be closed down you will lose a day's trading. | :07:13. | :07:16.
People will be put off coming into town on those days. It is a | :07:17. | :07:19.
write-off in terms of that but hopefully it is a one-off and, you | :07:20. | :07:23.
know, people won't be put off coming into town. Traders are already | :07:24. | :07:25.
know, people won't be put off coming finding it tough. We hear about | :07:26. | :07:29.
shops closing, we hear about retailers going into administration | :07:30. | :07:32.
and online shopping, too, can be a problem for business. We keep | :07:33. | :07:35.
hearing about these green shoots of recovery but it appears people on | :07:36. | :07:40.
the ground aren't feeling that recovery just yet. Out on the high | :07:41. | :07:44.
street and the mood is one of optimism Everybody has a right to | :07:45. | :07:47.
protest. We don't mind that. It is how it is done. This area isn't on | :07:48. | :07:56.
at this time of year. We are hoping it goes well and everything quietens | :07:57. | :08:01.
down and they talk and get something sorted. It hasn't been a bad year | :08:02. | :08:05.
for this businessman. He has opened new premises. It could have been a | :08:06. | :08:08.
very different story. That was a broughtal time for business. The two | :08:09. | :08:13.
black Fridays, our two best day of the year, where everybody comes out | :08:14. | :08:16.
to party, we lost them. The recession is not my worry or | :08:17. | :08:18.
to party, we lost them. The problem. The issue with political | :08:19. | :08:22.
instability and the flags is the biggest problem I have. We will | :08:23. | :08:25.
always get through recession if we have to bring our prices down but we | :08:26. | :08:29.
can't control the security igs swa. That's definitely my biggest | :08:30. | :08:33.
nightmare. -- security situation. A year on and high on Belfast's | :08:34. | :08:37.
Christmas wish list, is a more peaceful end to a more difficult | :08:38. | :08:40.
year. And there is more on that theme of | :08:41. | :08:44.
rebuilding the economy on Spotlight here on BBC One at 10.35pm after our | :08:45. | :08:48.
late news. One thing it seems will not be | :08:49. | :08:53.
changing in the near future is the high cost of energy. | :08:54. | :08:56.
The Utility Regulator is responsibility for ensuring | :08:57. | :08:59.
customers get value for money in electricity and gas. Today, the | :09:00. | :09:03.
woman who leads that body, warned high prices are here to stay. Our | :09:04. | :09:09.
economics and business editor John Campbell reports. | :09:10. | :09:12.
The rise in energy prices in recent years has been eye-watering. | :09:13. | :09:18.
Consumers and businesses have been relentlessly squeezed. Since 2007, | :09:19. | :09:23.
the price of electricity has increased by 47%. The price of gas | :09:24. | :09:29.
has risen even more, up by 76%. Household incomes have not kept | :09:30. | :09:31.
pace. Typically, they have only gone up by | :09:32. | :09:36.
about 11%. The Utility Regulator has a say in how much we pay, | :09:37. | :09:40.
controlling part of what you can be charged for gas and electricity. | :09:41. | :09:43.
She's warned that the era of high prices is set to continue. | :09:44. | :09:46.
! I'm afraid that the eia of high | :09:47. | :09:50.
energy prices is going to be with us for a considerable time. And there | :09:51. | :09:55.
isn't any silver bullet. But I think the dialogue that my team have | :09:56. | :10:00.
really provoked across all consumer groups and with the | :10:01. | :10:06.
really provoked across all consumer been a very productive one, aimed at | :10:07. | :10:08.
shedding some light on where costs are, and bringing more transparency | :10:09. | :10:12.
to our understanding of the markets. It's what has been happening on the | :10:13. | :10:16.
international energy markets that has, to a large extent, driven the | :10:17. | :10:20.
spike in your bills. These markets are influenced by a bewildering | :10:21. | :10:25.
array of factors. Everything from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in | :10:26. | :10:32.
Japan to wars and revolutions in north Africa and the Middle East. In | :10:33. | :10:37.
the face of this, what can consumers do? By switching consumers can save | :10:38. | :10:41.
money. From the highest energy tariff available to the lowest, | :10:42. | :10:47.
there is a saving of 18%, ?108. It is significant in any bill but | :10:48. | :10:50.
especially now when we have more demand and need in the winter months | :10:51. | :10:54.
for energy. The local energy market is changing. The | :10:55. | :10:58.
for energy. The local energy market growing. Reif youables are playing | :10:59. | :11:01.
an ever-charging part and competition is increasing. Taken | :11:02. | :11:05.
together, these factors might help keep a lid on practices in into the | :11:06. | :11:10.
future but it is events far from these shores, like wars or the | :11:11. | :11:15.
growth of economies, which will help push prices up. | :11:16. | :11:24.
A A 47-year-old woman has died after a road crash in Crumlin in County | :11:25. | :11:27.
Antrim. The collision involving a van and a car happened last night at | :11:28. | :11:31.
the junction of Moira Road and Ballydonaghy Road. Two men were | :11:32. | :11:34.
taken to hospital with injuries that were described as serious. The | :11:35. | :11:37.
police are appealing for witnesses to contact them. A prison officer | :11:38. | :11:40.
has appeared in court charged with misconduct in public office | :11:41. | :11:43.
following the death of a prisoner in custody five years ago. Daniel | :11:44. | :11:52.
Joseph Barclay, who is 35 and from Belfast, told Craigavon Court he was | :11:53. | :11:56.
not guilty of the charge. The case relates to Colin Bell, who took his | :11:57. | :12:00.
own life in Maghaberry jail in 2008. He had been serving a life sentence | :12:01. | :12:04.
for murder and had been on suicide watch. The prison officer failed to | :12:05. | :12:07.
stop his name being made public. The police have re-opened an | :12:08. | :12:10.
investigation into the killing of a west Belfast man in 1992, after | :12:11. | :12:13.
getting new information. 25-year-old Patrick Sullivan was stabbed during | :12:14. | :12:17.
an incident on Odessa Street. A west Belfast man was later convicted of | :12:18. | :12:23.
his manslaughter. The cap church behind a huge development on the | :12:24. | :12:28.
outskirts of Ballymena has insisted its plan will enhance, not destroy | :12:29. | :12:33.
the town centre. Earlier this month, independent retailers told BBC | :12:34. | :12:36.
Newsline they objected to a new supermarket which is part of the | :12:37. | :12:44.
97-acres at Ballee. Today the Green pastures church spoke to our | :12:45. | :12:48.
north-east reporter, David Maxwell, and explained why the retail element | :12:49. | :12:51.
was necessary. It's far from a traditional Church | :12:52. | :12:55.
building and inside there are more surprises. Not your average creche, | :12:56. | :12:59.
this three-storey play area and there is a queue to join this gym | :13:00. | :13:05.
which is open to the public. Green Pastures was only founded in 2007 | :13:06. | :13:09.
and already it needs more space. Success and what it is, is a good | :13:10. | :13:15.
question. I suppose some people have it and some lack it. But when a | :13:16. | :13:21.
church has it, then everybody realises it and people flock to it. | :13:22. | :13:27.
I guess I would attribute it really down to the presence of God. The | :13:28. | :13:32.
presence of God is the thing that makes a church a place that is | :13:33. | :13:37.
alive. The church has around 1,000 members and has big expansion plans | :13:38. | :13:41.
and this is what they look like. It wants to build housing, a hotel and | :13:42. | :13:45.
a supermarket on this site on the outskirts of Ballymena. Those | :13:46. | :13:49.
commercial aspects will found a new church building, a nursing home and | :13:50. | :13:53.
housing for vulnerable adults. What we have tried to do is come up with | :13:54. | :13:57.
a plan that will begin to meet the social needs that are out there. The | :13:58. | :14:04.
project is such that the church is at the centre of the community. We | :14:05. | :14:07.
really want the church to be at the centre of our community and if there | :14:08. | :14:10.
are needs there, we would hope that the church is available to meet | :14:11. | :14:14.
those needs. Some say the retail aspect of this scheme could damage | :14:15. | :14:17.
this town centre. Others don't want to see the lands built on at all. | :14:18. | :14:22.
But the pasture, who was once a director of Bus Manufacturer Right | :14:23. | :14:24.
Bus, says he wants director of Bus Manufacturer Right | :14:25. | :14:33.
board. We are not this great, big developer that is there to maybe | :14:34. | :14:36.
cause devastation. We are here for the town. You know, we are going to | :14:37. | :14:39.
be creating parks and we are going to be creating areas to walk more | :14:40. | :14:43.
and nicer than what we have at the minute. At the centre of the | :14:44. | :14:50.
development will be a new church building, a kind of mega church. If | :14:51. | :14:56.
Green Pastures gets the green light, its building could be bigger again | :14:57. | :15:00.
by 2017. Next, news of an economic boost to | :15:01. | :15:05.
Londonderry in the shape of millions of pounds of funding. The historic | :15:06. | :15:11.
walls and some landmarked buildings are being enhanced to encourage | :15:12. | :15:14.
people to explore the city and its night-time economy. | :15:15. | :15:17.
This was night-time economy. | :15:18. | :15:21.
project, lighting up the entire stretch of the city's historic | :15:22. | :15:25.
walls. The aim is to make the evening economy more vibrant and | :15:26. | :15:28.
encourage people to get out and about in a safe and more attractive | :15:29. | :15:32.
environment. With the walls being 400-year-old, | :15:33. | :15:37.
we have to promote thep rich cultural history that they offer to | :15:38. | :15:40.
the city. The wonderful views that people can get, right across the | :15:41. | :15:44.
city from various vantage points along the walls, but also allow | :15:45. | :15:48.
people, that when they are in the city, for whatever reason, it gives | :15:49. | :15:52.
them another thing to do. It's not just the city walls that have been | :15:53. | :15:56.
put under the spotlight. Several historic buildings are all lit up, | :15:57. | :16:01.
too. They include the seat of power in the Guildhall as well as the | :16:02. | :16:08.
aplane tis boys memorial ha. Saint krchl olum's memorial cathedral has | :16:09. | :16:16.
also been included. -- St Clm's. The prospect took years to complete and | :16:17. | :16:21.
cost in the region of ?2 million. What do residents and visitors make | :16:22. | :16:28.
of it? It is nice. It is exciting. It would be nice if it looked like | :16:29. | :16:33.
that all the time. Anything to improve the city, I'm for it, 100%. | :16:34. | :16:37.
It makes the walls stand out. I think it looks really pretty. Not | :16:38. | :16:41.
sure it is worth ?2 million but it looks good. It's cool, and lovely | :16:42. | :16:45.
and bright. There is an unusual twist in the lighting scheme, too. | :16:46. | :16:50.
The Playhouse Theatre is changing colour all the time. Here is a | :16:51. | :16:54.
festive red as we countdown the sleeps until Santa arrives. | :16:55. | :16:59.
We have got news this evening that may shock fans of road racing. | :17:00. | :17:02.
Stephen Watson is here and may shock fans of road racing. | :17:03. | :17:06.
name is stepping back, this guy. Yes, Michael Dunlop, one of Northern | :17:07. | :17:11.
Ireland's top riders has revealed tonight he will not be racing next | :17:12. | :17:14.
year. He has finished a remarkable season, winning races at the | :17:15. | :17:18.
international meetings, the North West, Ulster Grand Prix and four | :17:19. | :17:21.
victories at the Isle of Man TT. What has he been saying? | :17:22. | :17:25.
He has issued a statement saying despite offers he did not sign any | :17:26. | :17:29.
deals because of what he calls "various complications attached to | :17:30. | :17:34.
each." He also adds that unless he has the right equipment and | :17:35. | :17:37.
structure under him that he will not race at all but as of now he says he | :17:38. | :17:41.
won't be back until 2015 at the earliest. Honda said of course they | :17:42. | :17:46.
would not renewing their contract with him,p recently. Do you see this | :17:47. | :17:51.
as a bringmanship? Will a deal materialise? Possibly. To be honest | :17:52. | :17:55.
this doesn't really surprise me this evening, because as far back as | :17:56. | :17:58.
this doesn't really surprise me this August, Michael Dunlop told us in an | :17:59. | :18:00.
interview he was considering this option. I equally wouldn't be | :18:01. | :18:05.
stopped if there is a u. U-turn and he is on the grid again next year. | :18:06. | :18:08.
If he is not, it is a massive blow or road racing, every sport has | :18:09. | :18:11.
their headline star N Northern Ireland, this fellow is the main | :18:12. | :18:15.
attraction. Talking of something more positive, the Irish bid to host | :18:16. | :18:21.
the Rugby World Cup in 2023, a good way away but went before the Cabinet | :18:22. | :18:27.
in Dublin today. It'll be discussed with the Stormont | :18:28. | :18:32.
competitive very soon. There will be stiff competition from other | :18:33. | :18:35.
countries like South Africa and Italy and France who have already | :18:36. | :18:39.
expressed an interest in bidding but at the moment. The Irish bid starts | :18:40. | :18:44.
Ritchie Macau, captain of the world flash photography in this report. | :18:45. | :18:55.
Ritchie Macau, captain of the world Cup winning All Blacks, returned the | :18:56. | :19:01.
Webb Ellis trophy yesterday. It is less than two years to go until | :19:02. | :19:05.
Rugby World Cup 2015 takes place in England but the momentum for an All | :19:06. | :19:11.
Ireland bid is gaining pace. It is the biggest thinger Ireland can ever | :19:12. | :19:15.
do in sport. Dublin is too small for the Olympics. We are too small for | :19:16. | :19:19.
the euros. The Rugby World Cup is probably the biggest thing we can do | :19:20. | :19:22.
as a sporting nation. I think it would be a huge benefit to the | :19:23. | :19:27.
country and the economy in terms of the hundreds of thousands of people | :19:28. | :19:30.
visiting the country, but also, I think it would be symbolically | :19:31. | :19:33.
important for Ireland, too, because it would be an All Ireland effort. | :19:34. | :19:37.
Venues in Northern Ireland are to be key parts in hosting a World Cup. | :19:38. | :19:40.
Gaelic games stadium, Casement Park key parts in hosting a World Cup. | :19:41. | :19:44.
when redeveloped will be included. At the GAA's Congress earlier this | :19:45. | :19:49.
year, delegates gave central council permission to support the bid. | :19:50. | :19:53.
Across the city, be Ravenhill is more than half-way 20 an upgrade to | :19:54. | :20:00.
an 18,000 capacity. The Ulster coach, who is from New Zealand, | :20:01. | :20:05.
knows exactly what it would be to stage the games here. It would be | :20:06. | :20:09.
amazing. We had it back home in 2011. It is fantastic for the | :20:10. | :20:12.
country. Countries like Ireland and New Zealand are similar in a lot of | :20:13. | :20:23.
ways. It is the whole atmosphere. It is something to be savioured. But | :20:24. | :20:27.
there is a long way to go until Ireland's call is answered in this | :20:28. | :20:32.
process. Bids need to be in by 2016 with a decision taken a year later. | :20:33. | :20:39.
process. Bids need to be in by 2016 Football now: Roddy Collins is the | :20:40. | :20:43.
new manager of Derry City. He'll be assisted by Peter Hutton. The pair | :20:44. | :20:46.
accepted their roles this morning. Collins is a former manager of | :20:47. | :20:49.
Bohemians and Athlone Town. He impressed Derry's board who believe | :20:50. | :20:52.
he will bring many qualities to the job. You thinker, enthusiasm and how | :20:53. | :20:56.
much he wanted to come to Derry City. -- hunger. | :20:57. | :21:00.
His experience in League of Ireland football and motivation. We spoke to | :21:01. | :21:04.
lots of players. Every player with he spoke to they were all saying | :21:05. | :21:08.
about how hungry they made him feel and how motivated. That, to us, even | :21:09. | :21:12.
when you meet him, that seems to come across clearly. It's a night of | :21:13. | :21:19.
international football and, while Northern Ireland don't have a | :21:20. | :21:22.
fixture, the Republic of Ireland are away to Poland. We'll have the | :21:23. | :21:25.
fulltime score and action in tonight's late bulletin. Two months | :21:26. | :21:27.
ago it looked tonight's late bulletin. Two months | :21:28. | :21:31.
career was over after he broke his leg, as we reported here on BBC | :21:32. | :21:34.
Newsline. Now, remarkably, the Lisburn gymnast is back in training | :21:35. | :21:38.
and hoping to realise his dream of competing at next year's | :21:39. | :21:39.
Commonwealth Games. It's a long way from landing | :21:40. | :21:46.
somersaults and backflips but these are figure steps for Luke Carson. He | :21:47. | :21:50.
faced the prospect of never being able it compete again, after | :21:51. | :21:54.
suffering a second leg break inside two years. The scars are the result | :21:55. | :21:59.
of a five-hour operation, in which a steel rod was inserted into his leg. | :22:00. | :22:03.
They are a constant reminder of how far he has come in his recover rain | :22:04. | :22:07.
had you far he still has to go. I think I have surpassed definitely my | :22:08. | :22:12.
own expectations and I would say certainly the surgeon's | :22:13. | :22:15.
expectations. It is only seven-and-a-half weeks on. I'm in | :22:16. | :22:20.
the gym nearly fulltime again I'm doing four-hours plus five days a | :22:21. | :22:23.
week. I have to train smart now. It was during a training session that | :22:24. | :22:27.
Luke was injured. Every now and again I'm sitting there, just in | :22:28. | :22:32.
between goes on the apparatus and I kind of get a little flashback of | :22:33. | :22:37.
the Ince dented but it was just - it was the worst pain I have effort | :22:38. | :22:42.
felt. I took off on the springboard. As soon as I z I knew something real | :22:43. | :22:47.
bad had happened. Along with a the physicalchallenge of getting back to | :22:48. | :22:50.
the gym. Look admits it has been a testing time emotion but the | :22:51. | :22:58.
prospect of compete g at next summer's Commonwealth Games has | :22:59. | :23:01.
spurred him on. I was thinking very negative. You have to get past that. | :23:02. | :23:05.
Things like this will either make or break an athlete. There are plenty | :23:06. | :23:08.
of other athletes who have gone through the same thing. It either | :23:09. | :23:11.
finishes them or they come back better and stronger than ever. That | :23:12. | :23:12.
second option sts one better and stronger than ever. That | :23:13. | :23:17.
for. Reaching the games in Glasgow would complete this remarkable | :23:18. | :23:20.
comeback. It certainly would. A long way to go | :23:21. | :23:24.
but certainly a,back to remember. We wish him well. | :23:25. | :23:28.
It is just over a month until Christmas and the grand pop radio | :23:29. | :23:33.
House in Belfast is putting on a rendition of Charles Dickens' A | :23:34. | :23:38.
Christmas Carol. This is different. It is being fwoermed by the Belfast | :23:39. | :23:43.
op rattive company and features a little bit of magic. | :23:44. | :23:47.
Does this look like a stage ready for an opening night? How about | :23:48. | :23:52.
this? The set for A Christmas Carol is totally computer generated, | :23:53. | :23:57.
meaning there is no traditional set on the stage Thankfully most of the | :23:58. | :24:00.
production there are people about. But there are certainly occasions | :24:01. | :24:04.
when it is empty apart from myself. It is daunting, I have to say. It is | :24:05. | :24:06.
one of It is daunting, I have to say. It is | :24:07. | :24:09.
me, that it was a case of trying to bring out most of the poetry that | :24:10. | :24:18.
was Scrooge. The nastines the humour and sadness and I must say that I'll | :24:19. | :24:22.
let the audience decide whether it works or not but it is certainly | :24:23. | :24:26.
daunting. So how does it work? The animated scenes will be projected on | :24:27. | :24:30.
to an HD screen and will change automatic cli. It's the first time | :24:31. | :24:33.
technology like this has been used for an amateur production in | :24:34. | :24:39.
Northern Ireland. -- automatically. It is digital | :24:40. | :24:44.
files projected through HD projectors which are at the back of | :24:45. | :24:47.
the stage. In front of those there is a screen, on which they are | :24:48. | :24:52.
projected. It is called back projected. The audience is sitting | :24:53. | :24:59.
in front of the screens, the actors are also in front and behind is the | :25:00. | :25:02.
projected light. The directedor says the benefits are incredible. It's | :25:03. | :25:06.
much cleaning going from one scene to another if you can do it in a | :25:07. | :25:10.
computer-generated way, rather than having to fly in various bits and | :25:11. | :25:15.
pieces and it makes our job easy when it comes to the ghostly scenes. | :25:16. | :25:19.
There are moments set in the graveyard where the tomes rise out | :25:20. | :25:24.
of the ground and the ghosts appear. A Christmas Carol is best-known for | :25:25. | :25:27.
the ghosts of the past and present but this production gives a clear | :25:28. | :25:32.
glimpse into the future. And keeping with that Christmas, | :25:33. | :25:35.
wintry theme, the weather is next. This morning was and the wither | :25:36. | :25:44.
wonderland in some parts of Northern Ireland. With an icy wind it felt | :25:45. | :25:50.
winterery. If you didn't have snow in your back garden most was over | :25:51. | :25:57.
the hills. This is our the Sperrins looked today. Snow lying on the | :25:58. | :26:04.
fields and you can see this picture in Ballykinler green at the bottom | :26:05. | :26:08.
and snow half way up the Mourns. Snow is not in the forecast tonight | :26:09. | :26:13.
but it'll stay chilly. We are expecting the winds to pick | :26:14. | :26:17.
up. Strong winds around tomorrow with severe gales in polices. As the | :26:18. | :26:22.
winds ease towards the end of the week, colder nights and frost will | :26:23. | :26:25.
return. Another warning tonight but this time for wind. The wind warning | :26:26. | :26:30.
comes into effect during the early hours. This side of mid-nighted it | :26:31. | :26:35.
will be cold and damp, mostly rain falling. As the wind freshens, | :26:36. | :26:40.
temperatures will pick up towards morning there. Could be heavy bursts | :26:41. | :26:44.
towards the east coast by the end of the night. Gales reaching the north | :26:45. | :26:47.
coast by tomorrow morning. Eventually that windy weather | :26:48. | :26:50.
affecting all parts and lots of showers around, particularly first | :26:51. | :26:53.
thing. Hail and thunder is a responsibility towards the east | :26:54. | :26:56.
coast. The showers, though, will gradually become fewer as the day | :26:57. | :26:59.
goes on, I think and mostly in the north and east and those gusty winds | :27:00. | :27:03.
will be at their strongest initially along the north coast. As you can | :27:04. | :27:07.
see, temperatures technically higher tomorrow, with the brisk wind, it'll | :27:08. | :27:12.
still feel pretty cold and eventually severe gales and gusty | :27:13. | :27:15.
winds will reach the Antrim coast, parts of Belfast and the Down area, | :27:16. | :27:19.
too. It is likely that the north channel and some of the fast ferries | :27:20. | :27:22.
will be affected by strong winds tomorrow. Eventually they'll slowly | :27:23. | :27:26.
start it ease away tomorrow night. Thursday is looking -- to ease away. | :27:27. | :27:30.
Thursday is looking more cheerful. Largely dry with sunshine and the | :27:31. | :27:33.
winds ease further for Friday, but with the risk of some frost. | :27:34. | :27:40.
OK. Our late summary is at 10.25pm on BBC One. Thank you for watching. | :27:41. | :27:42.
Goodbye, take care. | :27:43. | :27:44. |
