Good evening. A Polish man whose car was destroyed | :00:00. | :00:11.
in an arson attack in North Belfast last night says he is considering | :00:12. | :00:14.
leaving Northern Ireland. His vehicle was one of four targeted in | :00:15. | :00:17.
an attack on the Whitewell Road which the police are treating as a | :00:18. | :00:19.
hate crime. Helen Jones has more. Far from home, four families try to | :00:20. | :00:30.
make a new life in Northern Ireland. They live in this small stretch of | :00:31. | :00:35.
road close to a sectarian interface. Last night, four cars were set | :00:36. | :00:39.
alight. It is being treated as a hate crime and the police were back | :00:40. | :00:43.
again this morning. Four different cars with one thing in common, they | :00:44. | :00:49.
are all owned by foreign national families who life here, who -- who | :00:50. | :00:54.
live here and work here locally and they are really angry about what | :00:55. | :01:00.
happened. Seeking refuge from war torn Afghanistan, it hasn't been an | :01:01. | :01:04.
easy transition for this man and his young family. He has been living in | :01:05. | :01:07.
Northern Ireland for 15 years and this isn't the first time he has | :01:08. | :01:16.
been targeted. I lived in Tiger's Bay, the same kind of people, but | :01:17. | :01:21.
they burned my house as well. I come for work and I see my house is | :01:22. | :01:29.
burned. Do you intend staying? I am not afraid of nobody. The damage to | :01:30. | :01:34.
this family car is extensive. They are just thankful the Fire and | :01:35. | :01:38.
Rescue Service were able to prevent the fire spreading to the property. | :01:39. | :01:42.
For the young Polish family living here, it is too close to home. How | :01:43. | :01:46.
long have you been here in this house? In the house, about six | :01:47. | :01:53.
weeks. I lived here for six years and nothing happened. I don't know | :01:54. | :01:57.
what to say. I am in shock. You are in shock? Yeah. I want to move as | :01:58. | :02:07.
fast as I can from that house. Originally from Slovakia, this man | :02:08. | :02:12.
examines damage to the car he needs for work. No work. No car. Every day | :02:13. | :02:20.
we work. The inquiry into historical abuse | :02:21. | :02:27.
has been told that those in charge of young boys at Termonbacca | :02:28. | :02:30.
Children's Home in Londonderry behaved like "The Taliban". The | :02:31. | :02:34.
inquiry, which is investigating abuse at a number of children's | :02:35. | :02:37.
homes in Northern Ireland from 1922 to 1995, heard from a man who went | :02:38. | :02:41.
into the home as a young boy in 1950. Kevin Sharkey reports. | :02:42. | :02:53.
Desperate cries from scared children rang through the corridors of this | :02:54. | :02:57.
building, the inquiry ary heard today. The claim came from a witness | :02:58. | :03:04.
who gave his description of what happened at Termonbacca Children's | :03:05. | :03:09.
Home when I lived there as a child. The environment of Termonbacca | :03:10. | :03:14.
Children's Home was such that 24, seven no one was safe. No child was | :03:15. | :03:18.
safe. I wasn't safe. The victim's evidence was at times harrowing and | :03:19. | :03:22.
times he became emotional and he described those in charge as like | :03:23. | :03:27.
the Taliban, he said, because of their fundamentalism and Sadasm. The | :03:28. | :03:42.
chairman said, " How could any church organisation inflict that on | :03:43. | :03:47.
me?" The man said he told the priest what he witnessed. The priest told | :03:48. | :03:52.
him, "You must never speak about that and then added, you are the | :03:53. | :03:58.
product of a satanic relationship." The experience left him with | :03:59. | :04:02.
traumatic memories. All the junior boys from four to eight years of age | :04:03. | :04:08.
were in bed and one boy would start crying for his mammy and you would | :04:09. | :04:15.
hear the cry, "Mammy, mammy." The next boy would start. The man told | :04:16. | :04:19.
of how later in life he made a discovery about his family. Two of | :04:20. | :04:22.
his brothers were at Termonbacca Children's Home while he was there | :04:23. | :04:27.
and five of his sisters were at a nearby nun's home he visited | :04:28. | :04:34.
occasionally. He never knew as the nuns didn't tell him. | :04:35. | :04:38.
A man accused of raping a child in the 1990s has told a court the | :04:39. | :04:44.
alleged victim is lying. He is one of three men facing a series of | :04:45. | :04:47.
sexual abuse charges. The alleged victims are a brother and sister. | :04:48. | :04:51.
Today the only defendant not related to them took the witness stand. He | :04:52. | :04:55.
is described as a family friend and faces charges in connection to the | :04:56. | :04:58.
alleged female victim. He told the jury at Coleraine Crown Court he is | :04:59. | :05:05.
innocent of all charges. He confirmed that he had been back to | :05:06. | :05:08.
the family home and watched pornography there, but denied any | :05:09. | :05:11.
suggestions of sexually abusing a child. | :05:12. | :05:15.
A play which was banned by Newtownabbey Council, and then given | :05:16. | :05:17.
a reprieve, got underway in the borough tonight. The production | :05:18. | :05:24.
about the Bible is being staged by The Reduced Shakespeare Company at | :05:25. | :05:27.
the Mill Theatre. Dan Stanton watched some of the performance. | :05:28. | :05:32.
Dan, so what was the turnout for the play like? Stephen, it was a very | :05:33. | :05:36.
good turnout. A total contrast to just over a week ago before the play | :05:37. | :05:40.
was banned when just over 100 tickets had been sold for both | :05:41. | :05:44.
nights. Now, this evening, there were 400 people at the performance. | :05:45. | :05:48.
That's a sell out and tomorrow night, another 400 and another sell | :05:49. | :05:56.
out. So what's the reaction been? Well, I saw the first-half of | :05:57. | :06:00.
tonight's performance and it was very well received indeed. Sketches | :06:01. | :06:06.
from three of the actors who were playing the Bible in less than two | :06:07. | :06:10.
hours. Now, after the performance I spoke to some of the audience that | :06:11. | :06:13.
saw the production and this is what they had to say. | :06:14. | :06:18.
I don't know what the fuss was about. It was hilarious. It was | :06:19. | :06:22.
marvellous, it was everything you expected it to be. The sell out | :06:23. | :06:26.
crowd is testament to the fact that everyone wants to come out and enjoy | :06:27. | :06:30.
themselves. I am so glad it went ahead. A victory for freedom in the | :06:31. | :06:36.
arts. Would you have gone to it if it hadn't been banned and then | :06:37. | :06:39.
unbanned? I made an effort to support them. It was fun. A good | :06:40. | :06:49.
atmosphere. I really enjoyed it. Now, that was reaction from some of | :06:50. | :06:54.
the people tonight to the performance. It is on again tomorrow | :06:55. | :06:58.
night. Another 400 are going to see it. Then they go off to Bromsgrove | :06:59. | :07:06.
near Birmingham and 21 venues in England and Scotland. There is a lot | :07:07. | :07:10.
more interest in the production now because it had been banned and | :07:11. | :07:17.
reinstated by Newtownabbey Council. Ards Borough Council has agreed a | :07:18. | :07:20.
plan to save the Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry subject to the | :07:21. | :07:23.
approval of the Northern Ireland Executive. Protestors gathered at | :07:24. | :07:26.
the council meeting tonight ahead of the decision. If it gets more than | :07:27. | :07:30.
?900,000 from the Government to save it, the council says the revamped | :07:31. | :07:33.
aquarium will have fewer staff and may introduce seasonal opening. The | :07:34. | :07:41.
Shadow Secretary of State Ivan Lewis says he is concerned that three | :07:42. | :07:44.
years of consecutive elections could lead to a period of political | :07:45. | :07:47.
paralysis in Northern Ireland. Speaking in Belfast today, he said | :07:48. | :07:50.
although it was disappointing that no agreement was reached over the | :07:51. | :07:53.
Haass proposals, it would be wrong for the British and Irish | :07:54. | :08:00.
governments to try to impose a deal. If Northern Ireland stands still, my | :08:01. | :08:04.
view is that means it will go backwards and the risk is with the | :08:05. | :08:07.
three years of election that will happen. I'm saying today, let's hope | :08:08. | :08:10.
the political leaders show the courage, show the strength that's | :08:11. | :08:14.
necessary and sometimes that means saying difficult things to one's own | :08:15. | :08:18.
supporters. That's the definition of strong and effective leadership. | :08:19. | :08:22.
Now with the weather forecast. Here's Cecilia Daly. | :08:23. | :08:26.
The rain hasn't stopped completely. There will be showers around | :08:27. | :08:32.
tonight, but it won't be as wet as recent nights and there will be dry | :08:33. | :08:37.
gaps. Some gaps in the cloud which could lead to patches of ice by | :08:38. | :08:42.
tomorrow morning. Watch out for slippery surfaces during the rush | :08:43. | :08:45.
hour tomorrow and it will feel colder generally tomorrow. Still | :08:46. | :08:49.
showers around. It is worth keeping the umbrella handy, but it won't be | :08:50. | :08:53.
raining all the time and there will be dry gaps and brightness at times | :08:54. | :08:57.
later on in the day. It will be an icy start for many parts of Scotland | :08:58. | :09:00.
and Northern England too. Perhaps down into the Midlands. There will | :09:01. | :09:04.
be showers across Northern England and the Midlands through the day and | :09:05. | :09:08.
heavy rain moving away from London and the South East. Then we look to | :09:09. | :09:12.
the West where rain gradually encrouches into western counties of | :09:13. | :09:16.
Ireland and that's coming into Northern Ireland later in the day | :09:17. | :09:19.
and to most places tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. Before it | :09:20. | :09:22.
arrives, it may brighten up for a time in Belfast and the East. | :09:23. | :09:27.
Feeling chilly tomorrow with temperatures of just four or five | :09:28. | :09:30.
Celsius. Friday, there is a lot of rain. Some flooding is likely | :09:31. | :09:35.
especially across parts of Antrim, Down and Armagh where the rain will | :09:36. | :09:39.
be at its heaviest and you can see it is a wash out for a while anyway. | :09:40. | :09:43.
Strong winds too especially near the East Coast and the windy weather | :09:44. | :09:46.
continues through the weekend. Severe gales likely on Saturday with | :09:47. | :09:50.
further showers which will make it feel cold at times. The better of | :09:51. | :09:53.
the two days this weekend will be Sunday. Good night. | :09:54. | :09:57.
That's it. Good night. | :09:58. | :10:00. |
