me. Time now to get the That is all from us. An

:00:00.:00:13.

Hello, and welcome to BBC Newsline. Tonight's top stories: a former

:00:14.:00:23.

nursing home manager is struck off the register after being found

:00:24.:00:26.

guilty of failing to investigate allegations of abuse against elderly

:00:27.:00:31.

and vulnerable residents. The courts in controversy, as

:00:32.:00:33.

Stormont's Justice Committee locks horns with Northern Ireland's most

:00:34.:00:35.

senior judge. Business owners in Strabane fear a

:00:36.:00:38.

proposed out-of-town development will damage an already-struggling

:00:39.:00:42.

town centre. A New York-based software firm is to

:00:43.:00:46.

create 35 hi-tech jobs in Belfast, and more could follow.

:00:47.:00:50.

Another famous win for Ireland's cricketers. They shock the World

:00:51.:00:55.

Champions in Jamaica. And there's a colder feel to the

:00:56.:00:59.

weather. More showers to come too, and I'll be looking ahead to the

:01:00.:01:09.

weekend forecast. A nurse who worked at a care home in

:01:10.:01:12.

Carrickfergus has been struck off for failing to investigate

:01:13.:01:15.

allegations of abuse against elderly and vulnerable residents. Last year

:01:16.:01:20.

a whistle-blower told the BBC that she'd raised concerns regarding

:01:21.:01:23.

patient safety and neglect at the same home as far back as 2005. Our

:01:24.:01:29.

health correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly reports. This nursing home

:01:30.:01:40.

in Carrickfergus houses elderly and vulnerable residents. In 2010, the

:01:41.:01:47.

manager, Katherine McCall, was made aware a number of families were

:01:48.:01:50.

concerned about how loved ones were being treated by a particular member

:01:51.:01:55.

of staff. Evidence was brought before the Nursing and Midwifery

:01:56.:02:00.

Council which investigates cases of misconduct. It found Mrs McCall had

:02:01.:02:06.

failed to investigate allegations of abuse I1 member of staff against

:02:07.:02:10.

five elderly residents. The panel also found the former nursing home

:02:11.:02:15.

manager guilty of being the profession into disrepute. The

:02:16.:02:20.

chairman said they reached their decision as it was their duty to

:02:21.:02:23.

protect the public and especially the old and vulnerable. The care as

:02:24.:02:29.

us and against whom the allegations were made ceased working at the home

:02:30.:02:34.

at the start of 2011. Mrs McCall also left and a new manager was

:02:35.:02:38.

appointed. With regard to Mrs McCall's case, the hearing heard

:02:39.:02:43.

that by failing to investigate allegations she had put residents at

:02:44.:02:48.

risk. The chairman said Mrs McCall had deliberately closed her eyes to

:02:49.:02:53.

what was going on and said due to the prolonged nature of her

:02:54.:02:57.

misconduct the panel had no option but to impose the toughest sanction

:02:58.:03:01.

possible, which meant striking her off the nursing register. In an

:03:02.:03:07.

unrelated case last year the BBC revealed how a whistle-blower made

:03:08.:03:12.

allegations of patient neglect and her practice at Cherry tree nursing

:03:13.:03:16.

home eight years ago. A former care system said her concerns were

:03:17.:03:21.

ignored for years. Shortly after she went public, the Health Minister

:03:22.:03:26.

ordered an independent review. In response to the Council hearing, a

:03:27.:03:31.

statement from the home said this was a sad day for the nursing

:03:32.:03:34.

profession Tom for those who strive to meet the highest standards.

:03:35.:03:38.

Masked men have stolen ?3000 from two elderly sisters in South

:03:39.:03:42.

Belfast. It happened last night at Vernon Street. May Kelly was

:03:43.:03:45.

visiting her sister Eileen, when the masked men came into the house and

:03:46.:03:50.

said they were searching for drugs. The men escaped in the direction of

:03:51.:03:54.

Oak Way. The sisters weren't hurt during the robbery, but were left

:03:55.:03:58.

shaken. They did not want to appear on camera. We just couldn't do

:03:59.:04:03.

anything after because we didn't know who to run to, to tell the

:04:04.:04:10.

truth. How would they like their mothers to get this? How would they

:04:11.:04:14.

like their mothers to be sitting and men come in? Old-age pensioners not

:04:15.:04:17.

able to defend themselves. MLAs have criticised Northern

:04:18.:04:20.

Ireland's most senior judge after he suggested the Justice Committee was

:04:21.:04:25.

acting outside its powers. The Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan

:04:26.:04:27.

accused the committee of unconstitutional conduct in its

:04:28.:04:29.

inquiries into judicial appointments. Our political editor

:04:30.:04:35.

Mark Devenport is at Stormont. Mark, what's behind this row? This goes

:04:36.:04:42.

back to some extraordinary evidence the Justice Committee took in

:04:43.:04:46.

November. They heard from a County Court judge, Desmond Marrinan, who

:04:47.:04:51.

complained about being passed over for a promotion to the job of High

:04:52.:04:57.

Court judge in 2009. He said the treatment he suffered amounted to a

:04:58.:05:02.

flawed and biased treatment and criticised the Northern Ireland

:05:03.:05:03.

judicial appointments commission which made the appointment. So what

:05:04.:05:12.

happened today? The committee had been looking for Sir Declan Morgan

:05:13.:05:17.

to give them evidence about this. They did a too look into this as

:05:18.:05:20.

part of their probe into the commission, but he wrote back to say

:05:21.:05:24.

he believed they were exceeding their powers and were behaving

:05:25.:05:28.

potentially unconstitutionally in dealing with this. Paul Givan, the

:05:29.:05:35.

committee chair, read out in part his letter and did not sound very

:05:36.:05:42.

impressed by the argument. I was somewhat taken aback by the

:05:43.:05:45.

correspondence from the Lord Chief Justice and the tone of the letter.

:05:46.:05:50.

I don't believe it is helpful. It is not conducive to the type of

:05:51.:05:54.

relationship we have been seeking to build with the Lord Chief Justice

:05:55.:05:58.

and I believe it is an attempt to frustrate the workings of this

:05:59.:06:03.

committee. He is clearly not happy but what happens next? The committee

:06:04.:06:09.

will get legal advice to check if it is within its powers. What will be

:06:10.:06:14.

crucial maybe the timeline. The appointment happened in 2009 which

:06:15.:06:19.

was before the devolution of justice in 2010 and I think that is one

:06:20.:06:23.

reason why do Lord Chief Justice feels they are acting outside the

:06:24.:06:28.

remit. They may argue that because the looking at implications for

:06:29.:06:31.

future policy they can delve into this matter.

:06:32.:06:35.

The weeks of persistent rain have resulted in flooding in County

:06:36.:06:38.

Fermanagh. The Derrychara link road in Enniskillen was closed today,

:06:39.:06:41.

although some drivers ignored the warning signs. Water approached a

:06:42.:06:45.

number of business units, and pumps have been brought in to help ease

:06:46.:06:48.

the situation. Water levels in Lough Erne are currently about two feet or

:06:49.:06:52.

60cm below their peak in 2009, when severe flooding resulted in

:06:53.:06:54.

widespread disruption to businesses and the road network.

:06:55.:06:57.

Traders in Strabane say a proposed ?50 million development on the site

:06:58.:06:59.

of the former army checkpoint at the Camel's Hump could have a

:07:00.:07:03.

devastating impact on town centre businesses. The developer of the

:07:04.:07:16.

massive project claims it'll create around 1000 jobs and help Strabane

:07:17.:07:19.

overcome its unemployment black spot image. Here's our North-West

:07:20.:07:30.

reporter, Keiron Tourish. It is an impressive sight as you cross the

:07:31.:07:35.

Tyrone Donegal border and if one developer has his way in this area

:07:36.:07:37.

will be transformed as well in the next few years. The developer says

:07:38.:07:44.

the project represents an investment of ?15 million and could create 1000

:07:45.:07:48.

jobs within three years of being up and running. The scheme includes a

:07:49.:07:53.

learning and employment Park with back office jobs, a 90 bedroom hotel

:07:54.:08:00.

and entertainment complex, but one element of the project is provoking

:08:01.:08:04.

controversy, the plan to build a 60,000 square feet supermarket on

:08:05.:08:08.

the edge of town. The new store would compete with a similar sized

:08:09.:08:13.

Asda which opens nearby in July 2007. Some Strabane traders believe

:08:14.:08:19.

that had a serious effect on the town centre. It would be this market

:08:20.:08:26.

aspect. We don't have any problem with the other aspects, we think it

:08:27.:08:30.

would be fantastic, but look around the town, shutters down and

:08:31.:08:36.

businesses closing. We don't know if the town could take something so far

:08:37.:08:40.

out of the town. The developer believes it could breathe new life

:08:41.:08:44.

into the area. It includes plans for a promenade and cross-border bridge.

:08:45.:08:52.

This is a strategy to tackle underinvestment in Strabane and we

:08:53.:08:55.

have explained that they is one of this is at the border, phase two

:08:56.:09:00.

will involve regeneration of the town centre. One independent

:09:01.:09:07.

businesswoman welcome new investment but stressed the balance must be

:09:08.:09:12.

right. I am passionate about my business. I love being an

:09:13.:09:15.

independent retailer but you wonder why it is a constant fight to keep

:09:16.:09:19.

your business turning and trying to bring people into the centre of

:09:20.:09:22.

town, and you are thinking about local councils and ministers who are

:09:23.:09:26.

not seeing what is happening on the ground. Shoppers had mixed views on

:09:27.:09:32.

the project. Any investment is good for Strabane. There is little work

:09:33.:09:38.

here. I think it would take a lot away from the main town. Good idea

:09:39.:09:46.

or bad? Bad. It is down to planners to decide if the ambitious scheme

:09:47.:09:49.

will benefit the area. Still to come on the programme

:09:50.:09:55.

before seven: Don't be fooled by the soft furnishings. This is a school

:09:56.:10:00.

and these rooms have been set up to help children who are having

:10:01.:10:03.

difficulties. A New York-based software firm which

:10:04.:10:06.

allows iPads to be used as cash registers is to create 35 jobs in

:10:07.:10:10.

Belfast. ShopKeep POS is making the city its European headquarters. With

:10:11.:10:15.

the details, here's our economics and business editor John Campbell.

:10:16.:10:24.

Get started in no time, train your staff in minutes. Around 10,000 shop

:10:25.:10:31.

owners and cafe owners use this device in the US and Canada. It is

:10:32.:10:37.

built as an alternative to cash registers. The Enterprise Minister

:10:38.:10:43.

was getting to grips with it today. The company is planning to expand

:10:44.:10:46.

into Europe and is hiring software developers here. More jobs could

:10:47.:10:51.

follow, so why Belfast? I came to Belfast back in October and it took

:10:52.:10:56.

me about 24 hours to totally fall in love with this town. The people, the

:10:57.:10:59.

great work ethic, the hard-working people and great engineering talent,

:11:00.:11:02.

and it's just a great, cosy little town. I just thought it was a

:11:03.:11:08.

perfect opportunity for us. Belfast now has a range of large and small

:11:09.:11:12.

technology businesses and some in the sector say there is a problem

:11:13.:11:16.

with not enough skilled people to fill jobs. The minister says that is

:11:17.:11:24.

being tackled. I am working with my ministerial colleague in employment

:11:25.:11:26.

and learning to make sure we do not just have IT skills but abrogate IT

:11:27.:11:32.

skills, and we set up a software testing Academy to make sure we have

:11:33.:11:36.

those skills and we are always engaging with the industry. Better

:11:37.:11:40.

paying jobs like these are key to our long-term economic growth. The

:11:41.:11:46.

challenge is to create more of them. It's a place none of us wants to end

:11:47.:11:50.

up, but for victims and witnesses who find themselves in the courts

:11:51.:11:54.

system, it can be a frustrating and upsetting experience. Changes are

:11:55.:11:57.

being made to make it more efficient and easier for those who have to

:11:58.:12:02.

give evidence. Our reporter Conor Macauley has been looking at

:12:03.:12:05.

problems in the system. His report begins with the voice of a mother

:12:06.:12:09.

whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver. I wanted to be there at

:12:10.:12:14.

every court appearance. I made that clear. I felt I needed to do that to

:12:15.:12:20.

enable me to realise that I had justice for my daughter. Denise

:12:21.:12:27.

McCauley's daughter was killed by a drunken driver in 2011. She had been

:12:28.:12:31.

in the car on a night out when he crashed. Even with a guilty plea

:12:32.:12:36.

from the start, the case took a year to conclude. Lack of information and

:12:37.:12:41.

a sense her family were a bit players in the process left in these

:12:42.:12:46.

disillusioned. It is just a matter of fact to them and it is the same

:12:47.:12:52.

as if it had been a dog killed in the road. It is the personal and

:12:53.:13:00.

desensitised. Serious cases are tried in the Crown Court but much of

:13:01.:13:05.

the preparatory work is done in Magistrates' Court. It can mean

:13:06.:13:09.

checking things like parental resort -- like parental reports and making

:13:10.:13:15.

sure it is prepared on time. It can mean short hearings were not much

:13:16.:13:19.

happens but if you are a family member determined to come to every

:13:20.:13:22.

hearing, you may find that frustrating. The knees's experience

:13:23.:13:28.

is a tough one for the Public Prosecution Service do here. This

:13:29.:13:34.

man is the victim 's' champion and hopes to ruled a service which will

:13:35.:13:38.

see a defeated case officer for families all the way from charge to

:13:39.:13:42.

conviction. He accepts reform is needed. When it gets to Crown Court

:13:43.:13:47.

there is more focus on the victim and witness, staff who have the time

:13:48.:13:52.

and make an effort to explain to the witness what is happening. In the

:13:53.:13:58.

past we perhaps could have offered a better service to witnesses as cases

:13:59.:14:03.

go through the Magistrates' Court. That attempt to give a better

:14:04.:14:08.

service is behind a new justice Bill which aims to clear path of the

:14:09.:14:12.

bottlenecks. Cases go through a preliminary inquiry, essentially a

:14:13.:14:17.

mini trial in the Magistrates' Court to test evidence and decide if a

:14:18.:14:21.

case should go to trial. This Justice Bill would see that process

:14:22.:14:27.

abolished for serious cases. Virtually no case is ever dismissed

:14:28.:14:31.

at that stage and yet it requires court time, bringing defendants from

:14:32.:14:37.

jail, witnesses and cross-examination and has proven to

:14:38.:14:42.

be of no great value in England and Wales and we need to see about

:14:43.:14:47.

abolishing it here completely. No one wants to end up in the criminal

:14:48.:14:50.

justice system but it is hoped if you do the changes will mean a

:14:51.:14:54.

simpler and more apathetic experience. -- more empathetic

:14:55.:14:58.

experience. If you've had a similar experience,

:14:59.:15:01.

you can let us know by visiting our Facebook site.

:15:02.:15:04.

The funeral has taken place in Newry of Paul Lambert, who was killed in a

:15:05.:15:08.

suspected hit and run in San Francisco last week. Hundreds of

:15:09.:15:11.

people attended the requiem mass at the Church of the Assumption in

:15:12.:15:14.

Drumalane. It's the second tragedy for the family in the last year. His

:15:15.:15:17.

cousin Kevin Bell died in a suspected hit and run incident in

:15:18.:15:20.

New York in June. A number of people, including three

:15:21.:15:23.

police officers, have been treated for the effects of breathing in

:15:24.:15:27.

smoke after a suspected arson attack on a flat in Antrim. The fire at

:15:28.:15:31.

Tiger Court broke out shortly before 1:30am this morning. No-one was in

:15:32.:15:36.

the property at the time. Two men aged 18 and 22 have been arrested.

:15:37.:15:42.

It will cost almost ?1.4 million to repair roads damaged in the recent

:15:43.:15:48.

storms. The largest single bill is ?382,000 to repair the sea wall on

:15:49.:15:53.

the Rostrevor Road near Warrenpoint. Part of the wall and the road

:15:54.:15:55.

collapsed into the sea last week. Extra help is to be given to young

:15:56.:16:08.

pupils who are falling behind in their schooling. Nurturing units

:16:09.:16:10.

will help almost 500 primary school pupils. They provide extra attention

:16:11.:16:15.

and comfort for children, and as our education correspondent Maggie

:16:16.:16:17.

Taggart reports, it's helping them do better in class. On normal days

:16:18.:16:28.

there are six schoolchildren in these three rooms, chosen by the

:16:29.:16:31.

teachers that fully backed by the parents. They call it the sunshine

:16:32.:16:36.

room and children can spend up to four terms here. As those schools

:16:37.:16:41.

come under the education Department, the idea was started by the

:16:42.:16:46.

Department for Social Development. Now another 20 units have been

:16:47.:16:53.

opened, 11 of them in Belfast. So many different children can be in

:16:54.:16:58.

the sunshine room, from a child who has difficulty maintaining or making

:16:59.:17:02.

friendships, a child who just needs a boost in their self-confidence,

:17:03.:17:06.

reach out to was resenting with challenging behaviours. They have

:17:07.:17:12.

comfortable sofas and a kitchen so they can learn to chat and express

:17:13.:17:17.

themselves. Some have quiet rooms with aromatherapy and soft lighting

:17:18.:17:22.

to soothe and inspire. They are more willing to contribute to class

:17:23.:17:25.

discussions and we see this as a huge benefit, especially to children

:17:26.:17:30.

with low self-esteem and self-confidence and we are seeing

:17:31.:17:33.

them thrive. They now want to learn and contribute. The two assembly

:17:34.:17:39.

ministers are opposed politically and agree this is a good way to

:17:40.:17:45.

spend ?3 million. When I met that teachers and children and talk to

:17:46.:17:49.

them, I saw the difference it was making to giving those children a

:17:50.:17:54.

good start early in life. If we changed young people's lives it is

:17:55.:17:58.

value for money, improving the environment is value for money and

:17:59.:18:03.

if we are improving family life it is value for money, and all those

:18:04.:18:06.

indicators have been ticked. Schools are hoping the funding will continue

:18:07.:18:11.

to pay for the extra teacher and classing assistant every unit needs.

:18:12.:18:19.

She's only been in the business of creating works of high art for the

:18:20.:18:22.

past five years, but already Belfast-based Alison Lowry has been

:18:23.:18:25.

making her mark in the world of glass design. The University Of

:18:26.:18:28.

Ulster graduate is now preparing to leave Northern Ireland to take up an

:18:29.:18:32.

artist in residency post at the biggest contemporary glass museum in

:18:33.:18:35.

the world, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York State. Ita Dungan

:18:36.:18:43.

has been looking at her work. The minute I started working with glass,

:18:44.:18:48.

the penny dropped. Alison Lowry founder calling late. I graduated in

:18:49.:18:56.

2009. I was a mature student, I started late, and even now I am not

:18:57.:19:00.

a full-time artist because I am also a mother and that takes up a vast

:19:01.:19:07.

proportion of my time. Inspired by antique Irish textiles, she wove her

:19:08.:19:12.

family life into her art. When I graduated I had just had my first

:19:13.:19:16.

two children, so this christening robe had been in my family for over

:19:17.:19:22.

100 years. It described a family tree of store and around this time

:19:23.:19:28.

the first wearer of the robe died so it began to encompass fragility and

:19:29.:19:31.

the delicacy in between birth and death. A stint at the Corning Museum

:19:32.:19:38.

of Glass she hopes adds another dimension to her work. This

:19:39.:19:44.

residency will allow me to get back in touch with my practice, what

:19:45.:19:48.

fired me to make the robe and these big pieces, so I think that means I

:19:49.:19:55.

am producing more work which has a value, honesty and integrity to it.

:19:56.:20:00.

And you can see more of Alison's work on The Arts Show tonight on BBC

:20:01.:20:03.

Two at 10pm. Now sport, and news of yet another

:20:04.:20:06.

famous giant-killing victory by Ireland's cricket team. Gavin.

:20:07.:20:12.

Ireland's cricketers recorded an impressive win in their first

:20:13.:20:14.

Twenty20 international against the current world champions, the West

:20:15.:20:15.

Indies. Yes, The match wasn't televised, but we

:20:16.:20:20.

did unearth some footage from Jamaica. Apologies for the quality.

:20:21.:20:24.

Playing at Sabina Park in Kingston, Ireland restricted their hosts to

:20:25.:20:28.

116-8. Ed Joyce then starred in the reply. He hit 40 runs as Ireland won

:20:29.:20:33.

at a canter by six wickets. They will play the Windies again

:20:34.:20:36.

tomorrow, looking for a bit of history with a first-ever series win

:20:37.:20:39.

against a top tier cricketing nation.

:20:40.:20:43.

Rugby, and Ireland coach Joe Schmidt has named the same starting team

:20:44.:20:46.

which defeated Wales just under two weeks ago for Saturday's clash with

:20:47.:20:51.

England. And a fully recovered Brian O'Driscoll will set a new record at

:20:52.:20:54.

Twickenham, as Thomas Niblock reports. A titanic force in Irish

:20:55.:21:05.

rugby, it would take more than a tummy bug for Brad O'Driscoll to

:21:06.:21:10.

miss Ireland against England, especially when he will equalled the

:21:11.:21:13.

world record of 139 test appearances. 15 years in the green

:21:14.:21:20.

shirt, 46 tries, for crippled crowns and Ireland's longest serving

:21:21.:21:24.

captain, his contribution to Ireland continues to defy logic. The last

:21:25.:21:32.

almost four years, he has been a special character. He cannot be that

:21:33.:21:35.

there he is without being that person he is and he has developed

:21:36.:21:40.

into the ultimate professional, he looks after himself well on his

:21:41.:21:45.

leadership is often unspoken. It is what he does and I think that is the

:21:46.:21:52.

most powerful way to influence people and the most powerful way to

:21:53.:21:57.

influence our opponents. Victory over Europe will secure a triple

:21:58.:22:01.

Crown on Saturday, playing at Twickenham a bonus. There is

:22:02.:22:07.

something special about playing at England or you are, and this year

:22:08.:22:12.

makes it special with our performances in the last couple of

:22:13.:22:17.

weeks. We have a bit of momentum and are moving in the right direction

:22:18.:22:20.

and this is our biggest challenge so far. We just need to take it to the

:22:21.:22:27.

next level. A first triple Crown in five years would certainly be just

:22:28.:22:31.

that. Tyrone lifted the first silverware

:22:32.:22:34.

of the GAA season last night, defeating Cavan by seven points in

:22:35.:22:37.

the rearranged Power NI McKenna Cup final. It was the third consecutive

:22:38.:22:40.

victory in the competition for Mickey Harte's side. Thomas Kane

:22:41.:22:49.

reports. An indication of Tyrone's strength and depth was that their

:22:50.:22:55.

starting line-up was early recognisable from the side which

:22:56.:22:57.

defeated Mayo in their last encounter. The side struggled to

:22:58.:23:04.

cope with the scoring threat of Eugene Keating and Martin Dunn. But

:23:05.:23:10.

the game changed seconds before the half-time whistle, as Plunkett

:23:11.:23:19.

Kane's goal left the sides level. In the second period, playing with a

:23:20.:23:28.

strong wind, Tyrone took control. This last number of years, people

:23:29.:23:33.

into road expect to win things so is those of us working with the team

:23:34.:23:37.

expect to deliver things on the players expect to win and that is

:23:38.:23:40.

where the most pressure comes from, the players as a squad and on the

:23:41.:23:45.

field and I would rather there was an expectancy there to win things.

:23:46.:23:51.

Cavan's cause was not helped after they were reduced to 14 men after

:23:52.:23:54.

the dismissal of defender Killian Brady. There have been some

:23:55.:24:01.

fantastic bowlers who haven't got a lot of gametime and the team gets

:24:02.:24:07.

rotated, so to come away with the cup proves we have the quality to

:24:08.:24:14.

compete at the top table. Tyrone's season will be assessed in September

:24:15.:24:20.

rather than fabric, but so far so good for Mickey Harte's side.

:24:21.:24:24.

Golf, and at the WGC World Matchplay in Arizona, both Graeme McDowell and

:24:25.:24:28.

Rory McIlroy got off to winning starts. Rory comfortably overcame

:24:29.:24:30.

American Boo Weekley despite a trip to the desert on the fifteenth. He

:24:31.:24:35.

came out of it a little better than this spectator, who took cover

:24:36.:24:38.

against a cactus. And McDowell produced the comeback of the day

:24:39.:24:41.

against Gary Woodland. He was three down with three to play, and forced

:24:42.:24:45.

the match to extra holes, where this approach on the 19th set up a birdie

:24:46.:24:54.

to win. I managed to make a couple of good swings coming in and he made

:24:55.:25:00.

a mistake on 18. The first bit of momentum I had had all days, so I

:25:01.:25:05.

had to hang tough out there and that is what I like about this event, you

:25:06.:25:09.

put yourself under pressure and see where you are and I take a lot of

:25:10.:25:13.

positives away, especially from the match today.

:25:14.:25:15.

Finally, Coleraine skater Jenna McCorkell finished just one place

:25:16.:25:18.

outside the top 24 qualifiers for tomorrow's free skating programme in

:25:19.:25:23.

Sochi. She is on the way home. That is the sport.

:25:24.:25:31.

Now let's get the weather. Earlier we saw the pictures and heard about

:25:32.:25:35.

flooding in Fermanagh and the Met Office have today released figures

:25:36.:25:39.

to say Northern Ireland is not too far away from having its wettest

:25:40.:25:42.

winter on record. We will keep you up to date. There is still a week to

:25:43.:25:48.

go and more rain forecast. Tonight that rain will fall as showers,

:25:49.:25:53.

working their way in from the west. They will be more frequent across

:25:54.:25:57.

western areas tonight but because of the wind some will blow to the east

:25:58.:26:01.

and because the air is colder there could be snow on mountains by

:26:02.:26:04.

tomorrow, the Sperrins and maybe the mourns. In between temperatures

:26:05.:26:10.

could get low enough for ice, will be not widespread but something to

:26:11.:26:15.

be aware of. This job is continued tomorrow and that will be quite cold

:26:16.:26:19.

with gusty winds, so temperatures may stay around four degrees at 8am

:26:20.:26:24.

but over the hills it will be lower and there could be sleet and snow.

:26:25.:26:29.

For most people it will be rain at low-level 's so a lot of surface

:26:30.:26:33.

water on the roads. As the day goes on, more showers come in, more

:26:34.:26:38.

showers than sunshine. Some showers could have hail and thunder, seven

:26:39.:26:44.

or eight degrees the temperature when the sun shines but with showers

:26:45.:26:49.

it could drop to four, so feeling colder than we are used to but there

:26:50.:26:54.

are some early signs of spring, the snowdrops here and even some

:26:55.:26:59.

daffodils have been spotted, so that is encouraging. For the weekend, you

:27:00.:27:06.

may wonder if you will get a chance to get out, but the next weather

:27:07.:27:11.

system coming towards us will bring warmer air but also a lot of wet

:27:12.:27:14.

hair with some strong winds at times. It won't rain all weekend. To

:27:15.:27:20.

be given with on Saturday there will be dry weather, cloud and rain

:27:21.:27:24.

pushing in and on Saturday the rain will become heavy with gusty winds,

:27:25.:27:30.

so Sunday will start wet with gusts up to 60 mph. It will improve in the

:27:31.:27:36.

afternoon, so Sunday afternoon and Sunday morning best bits of the

:27:37.:27:41.

weekend. -- and Saturday morning. Our late summary is at 10.25.

:27:42.:27:54.

We've got to get in the car. NINA SIGHS
