still trapped. We

:00:00.:00:13.

Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline:

:00:14.:00:16.

More than 30 years on, one man's conviction linked to

:00:17.:00:19.

the RUC's so-called shoot-to-kill policy could be overturned.

:00:20.:00:24.

A power company tells how the thousands of eels heading to

:00:25.:00:27.

I've been joining the crowds at Day One of the Balmoral Show and a

:00:28.:00:36.

Royal visitor was one of the first to arrive to sample the atmosphere.

:00:37.:00:39.

The organisers of the North West 200 are unveiling an award in memory

:00:40.:00:48.

The rain stayed away from the Balmoral show we would like more

:00:49.:00:55.

sunshine, a full forecast later. -- but we would like.

:00:56.:01:01.

Martin McCauley was seriously injured and

:01:02.:01:03.

his 17-year-old friend was killed in one of the most controversial

:01:04.:01:06.

He also came to prominence when he was convicted

:01:07.:01:09.

of being a member of an IRA team training rebel forces in Colombia.

:01:10.:01:13.

Today, the 52 year old from Lurgan is back in

:01:14.:01:15.

the news over that fatal shooting, a so-called RUC shoot-to-kill

:01:16.:01:18.

In its aftermath, Martin McCauley was found guilty of having weapons.

:01:19.:01:23.

It has since emerged that a secret MI5 recording of the incident wasn't

:01:24.:01:26.

Today, the Prosecution Service said it would not oppose his appeal.

:01:27.:01:31.

Our home affairs correspondent Vincent Kearney has the story.

:01:32.:01:45.

Police claimed Martin McCauley confronted them with a rival in

:01:46.:01:53.

October 1982. He was seriously injured and his friend was killed

:01:54.:01:59.

when officers opened fire. This is him leaving court in 1985 after

:02:00.:02:05.

being given a two year suspended sentence for possession of three

:02:06.:02:09.

rifles. He insisted he and his friend were not armed and police did

:02:10.:02:14.

not issue any warnings before they were shot. It was a claim he

:02:15.:02:19.

repeated in a BBC interview at the scene of the shooting. There were

:02:20.:02:25.

two shots. I saw a guy with a rifle moving across the door and once he

:02:26.:02:30.

disappear, the place exploded with gunfire -- disappeared. I moved to

:02:31.:02:36.

get cover and in doing so I was hit. Police insist the Ben Watt armed and

:02:37.:02:40.

had been given three warnings. Years later, it was revealed MI5 had a

:02:41.:02:47.

listening device inside the shed at the time of the shooting that

:02:48.:02:49.

recorded what happened. That recording could have a stab wished

:02:50.:02:56.

if police shouted warnings or made reference to Martin McCauley being

:02:57.:03:01.

bombed before they opened fire -- established. The recording was not

:03:02.:03:06.

made known to the court at the time of the trial. It was discovered by

:03:07.:03:10.

the Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester who invested

:03:11.:03:13.

allegations of a shoot-to-kill policy and to established the

:03:14.:03:19.

recording was later destroyed. Last year, the criminal cases review

:03:20.:03:23.

commission group -- referred the case to the Court of Appeal on the

:03:24.:03:29.

basis evidence had with -- had been withheld. A QC told the court he had

:03:30.:03:35.

been instructed to read a statement on behalf of the Crown Prosecution

:03:36.:03:41.

Service. It said relevant material had been withheld at the time, from

:03:42.:03:46.

the court and from the defence in the trial. The statement said this

:03:47.:03:52.

undermined public confidence in the criminal justice system and it wrote

:03:53.:03:56.

it into disrepute. The lawyer told the three Appeals Court judges the

:03:57.:04:01.

prosecution service would not make submissions to uphold the conviction

:04:02.:04:06.

and invited them to use their discretion. There will be a hearing

:04:07.:04:10.

next week to decide whether to do so. The lawyers of Martin McCauley

:04:11.:04:17.

will argue the conviction should be quashed on the basis title evidence

:04:18.:04:21.

was not made available to the judge's trial. The contents of the

:04:22.:04:25.

investigation have never been made public and the lawyers hope that

:04:26.:04:28.

will change during next week's hearing. He was tried in public and

:04:29.:04:34.

he was convicted in public and it is his fundamental right these

:04:35.:04:39.

documents be opened in a court so he and the general public are aware of

:04:40.:04:42.

what happened. Martin McCauley was not in court to hear the prosecution

:04:43.:04:47.

statements today as he faces extradition to South America if he

:04:48.:04:53.

returns to Northern Ireland. He was one of three men arrested in

:04:54.:04:57.

Colombia three years ago accused of training rebel forces in the

:04:58.:05:00.

country. Initially cleared off the charge, they were later convicted on

:05:01.:05:06.

appeal and sentenced to 17 years in jail but sentenced -- but fled to

:05:07.:05:08.

the Republic to avoid jail. Police are investigating an arson

:05:09.:05:31.

attack on an errant all attack. They claim there was a similar attack.

:05:32.:05:35.

Survivors and relatives of those killed in the Dublin Monaghan

:05:36.:05:38.

bombings 40 years ago this week are to sue the British Government.

:05:39.:05:41.

They claim the attacks were carried out by Loyalists,

:05:42.:05:44.

with government collusion, and that there was a cover-up.

:05:45.:05:46.

Thirty three people, including a pregnant woman,

:05:47.:05:48.

A tenth man has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in connection with

:05:49.:05:53.

the death of a Catholic community worker in Coleraine five years ago.

:05:54.:05:56.

He had been charged with manslaughter and attempted murder.

:05:57.:05:58.

Kevin McDaid died after he was attacked near his home.

:05:59.:06:01.

Two defendants still face the more serious charges.

:06:02.:06:09.

Still ahead, Northwest 200 unveils a new prize in the -- in honour of a

:06:10.:06:16.

The number of people claiming unemployment

:06:17.:06:30.

benefit is continuing to drop, with claims down by 800 in April.

:06:31.:06:33.

This is the 15th monthly fall in a row.

:06:34.:06:36.

The total number of claimants in April stood at 56,100.

:06:37.:06:38.

That compares to more than 64,000 in the same month last year.

:06:39.:06:42.

But the total is still well above the lowest ever level

:06:43.:06:45.

An update now on a story we brought you yesterday on the deaths of

:06:46.:06:58.

hundreds of thousands of endangered baby eels, called elvers.

:06:59.:07:00.

Over Easter, they got caught in traps that were meant to help them

:07:01.:07:04.

get past a hydro-electric dam in County Donegal and into Lough Erne.

:07:05.:07:07.

Today, the firm that runs the power station

:07:08.:07:09.

said the traps were being checked every day, but they had experienced

:07:10.:07:12.

Julian Fowler reports from Ballyshannon.

:07:13.:07:23.

The dam stands in the way of the tiny young eels making their way to

:07:24.:07:33.

Lough Erne. They are supposed to be given a helping hand into a tank

:07:34.:07:37.

where they are collected and transported around the dam to be

:07:38.:07:42.

released. The remarkable journey of the eels against thousands of miles

:07:43.:07:50.

away in a part of the Atlantic. The love I drift slowly across the ocean

:07:51.:07:54.

and when they reach shallow waters, they transform into elvers and make

:07:55.:08:01.

their way to the freshwater is Lough Erne. Some will stay here for up to

:08:02.:08:05.

25 years before a game making their way to the Open ocean and back to

:08:06.:08:10.

the Sargasso Sea to breed. As we know, the hydroelectric plant at

:08:11.:08:18.

Ballyshannon broke this cycle. Around 300,000 eels died in the

:08:19.:08:22.

traps here last month. One night over Easter, there was a large

:08:23.:08:28.

increase in elvers into one trap and we estimate about 150 kilograms of

:08:29.:08:35.

elvers, which represents 90% of the entire run last year, entered in one

:08:36.:08:41.

night into one trap. These were not detected until the following morning

:08:42.:08:48.

and unfortunately, 112 kilograms of elvers were lost at that stage. One

:08:49.:08:52.

expert said because elvers run at night, traps should be checked at

:08:53.:08:59.

night. He said there was far too casual and approached are critically

:09:00.:09:05.

endangered space you. Power company says it has transported 480

:09:06.:09:10.

kilograms of elvers this year, more than double the total of last year.

:09:11.:09:15.

An investigation is being carried out into the kill which could result

:09:16.:09:16.

in a prosecution. The leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage,

:09:17.:09:22.

has said he can't understand why one of its most prominent Asian

:09:23.:09:26.

supporters has accused the party The claim was made by the chair

:09:27.:09:28.

of the party's youth wing, Nigel Farage was speaking in Belfast

:09:29.:09:32.

today, With more is our political reporter,

:09:33.:09:38.

Stephen Walker. The UKIP leader arrived in Belfast

:09:39.:09:55.

city centre for the infamous -- Ford and for the infamous Eurosceptic,

:09:56.:10:01.

the venue was appropriate. Headlines follow Nigel Farage and a prominent

:10:02.:10:06.

Asians supporter has announced her resignation, saying the party was

:10:07.:10:11.

racist. This young lady, this time last week, appeared on national

:10:12.:10:15.

television in a debate to say our policy on immigration was right and

:10:16.:10:19.

the least racist because we do not want to discriminate against the

:10:20.:10:23.

Commonwealth in favour of Eastern and Southern Europe, so we have not

:10:24.:10:28.

changed in a week. I suspect peer pressure has made her change her

:10:29.:10:33.

position. UKIP are running 23 candidates in next week's

:10:34.:10:36.

collections and one European candidate but with just three

:10:37.:10:40.

collected representatives here, the challenge is obvious. Northern

:10:41.:10:45.

Ireland's election marketplace is crowded so UKIP will have to come up

:10:46.:10:49.

with something different to tempt voters away from the more

:10:50.:10:52.

established parties. Later this month, we will discover if the

:10:53.:10:58.

appeal of Nigel Farage has been successful.

:10:59.:11:06.

Thousands of people have gone along to the first day of our biggest

:11:07.:11:10.

There were some traffic delays, but not as many as last year.

:11:11.:11:14.

Nicola Weir is there for us this evening.

:11:15.:11:20.

The weather had been so good, here on the opening day of the Balmoral

:11:21.:11:31.

Show. 3,000 rosette is given out by the hard-working 93 judges. There

:11:32.:11:36.

was traffic disruption at the start of the day but that did not hamper

:11:37.:11:41.

the numbers coming this morning. Final preparations and Showtime.

:11:42.:11:45.

Thousands flocked to the opening day of the show for the sights, sounds

:11:46.:11:52.

and smells. The Princess Royal officially opens the three-day

:11:53.:11:57.

event, making sure she had a look at some of the 4,000 animals on show.

:11:58.:12:03.

Princess Anne gave us an award and she asked is how many animals we had

:12:04.:12:09.

and we said, 46. -- she asked us. She said we had the biggest number

:12:10.:12:15.

in the class, so happy at that bit. I am really nervous, making sure

:12:16.:12:19.

everything is right. It is a big day, a big showcase and you want to

:12:20.:12:25.

make sure everything is right. We are showing Aberdeen Angus. I hope

:12:26.:12:31.

they do well, we will see. If they do, we might get some sales. It must

:12:32.:12:37.

be a lot of work. On the go from four o'clock this morning getting

:12:38.:12:42.

them clean. So I am looking forward to tomorrow. Food was a big draw,

:12:43.:12:48.

with producers pulling out all the stops. It has become very popular, a

:12:49.:12:54.

lot of people trying it, but we do it on the spit so it is special. You

:12:55.:12:59.

can see what you are eating. We always get a fantastic response,

:13:00.:13:02.

half the effort is convincing people to try it, and they love it. Goat is

:13:03.:13:09.

going crazy in Northern Ireland. The rain stayed away and visitors were

:13:10.:13:12.

treated to prime livestock, a couple of Heron using Bowmans and unusual

:13:13.:13:18.

visitors. -- hair raising moments. It has been good and they take you

:13:19.:13:24.

three things you did not know. What did you not know? I did not know

:13:25.:13:29.

they gave you free samples. It is good for the first morning, a good

:13:30.:13:35.

crowd. Traffic was bad but it is good. We have seen the horses and

:13:36.:13:41.

the cows, it is very good, a good day out for the kids. It is not all

:13:42.:13:46.

about animals, this will set you back nearly half ?1 million. I will

:13:47.:13:51.

take two! If farmers are making money, they will spend money, they

:13:52.:13:55.

are progressive and we want to help them. We enjoyed working with the

:13:56.:13:59.

farming industry, they are great people, resilient, they have been

:14:00.:14:05.

through hard times and good times and they are consistent,

:14:06.:14:09.

hard-working and honest. A successful opening day and even the

:14:10.:14:11.

youngest found something to keep them happy.

:14:12.:14:16.

I am joined by the Chief Executive of the Royal Ulster agricultural

:14:17.:14:22.

Society Colin McDonald, and a show winner, Graham Davidson. A good

:14:23.:14:28.

day? We could not have hoped for better. They would. , perfect

:14:29.:14:32.

weather. Slow getting in this morning. -- the weather was perfect.

:14:33.:14:43.

As you can see, the numbers are good today. What are exhibitors telling

:14:44.:14:49.

Q? Most of them like the bigger show and they have had a good time. They

:14:50.:14:54.

cannot see everything here and that is pleasing to me. Everybody wants

:14:55.:14:59.

to do different things and I am delighted they are having a good

:15:00.:15:03.

time, that is what it is about. Anything to highlight? The highlight

:15:04.:15:08.

was the Royal visits because the Princess Royal has been interested

:15:09.:15:13.

in the society since 2007 and she came to see what she liked. She

:15:14.:15:18.

loved it and she saw so many things and said we do things really well

:15:19.:15:21.

here and others should take a lesson from us. You did talk about traffic

:15:22.:15:27.

disruption and people found it difficult to get in, did you make

:15:28.:15:32.

the proper plans? I think so, it was a bit slow this morning. Those who

:15:33.:15:37.

came during the rush hour were caught up in that but the exhibitors

:15:38.:15:43.

were in and the rush hour ended and everything happened all right. I was

:15:44.:15:48.

pleased to be incontinent -- in constant contact with the travel

:15:49.:15:53.

Centre who kept me up to date. The best way to get here is public

:15:54.:15:58.

transport. And you are a show winner, can we see your trophy and

:15:59.:16:04.

how did you get it? It is the young farmers award. The best point score

:16:05.:16:12.

overall. What does this mean to you, it is a major award? You just

:16:13.:16:18.

have to look at the name on the trophy to see who they were, it is a

:16:19.:16:23.

proud moment to win the award and to get my name on the trophy.

:16:24.:16:28.

Congratulations, and plenty more judging tomorrow and hopefully more

:16:29.:16:33.

winners. I will be here all day. And we will return to the show in a

:16:34.:16:39.

couple of minutes for the weather forecast.

:16:40.:16:44.

Today was a Down day at the Northwest 200, but yesterday, fans

:16:45.:16:47.

were reminded of just how dangerous the sport of road racing can be.

:16:48.:16:51.

A French rider had a high-speed crash. He was airlifted to the Royal

:16:52.:17:08.

Victoria Hospital and the latest on his condition is that he remains

:17:09.:17:13.

critical. One family who knows about the dangers of road racing is the

:17:14.:17:21.

Dunlop family. Robert and Joey lost their lives by competing in this

:17:22.:17:26.

dangerous sport. Robert is the most successful rider in the history of

:17:27.:17:29.

the competition and his sons are here this week to keep the Dunlop

:17:30.:17:34.

name going. Brotherly love at Northwest 200, the

:17:35.:17:40.

new generation of the Dunlop family are helping to prolong the famous

:17:41.:17:46.

surname of their Father Robert and on-call Joey. John McGuinness knew

:17:47.:17:51.

them better than most, his former team-mate and family friend paid a

:17:52.:17:56.

special visit to their hometown of Ballymoney this afternoon. They will

:17:57.:18:02.

never be forgotten in my eyes and in a lot of other people's. I have

:18:03.:18:07.

raced around the world and as far as Japan and Australia, we were

:18:08.:18:12.

instantly talking about Joey and Robert and Michael and William, so

:18:13.:18:19.

Ballymoney is on the map! Joey and Robert won an amazing 28 titles

:18:20.:18:24.

between them. A friendly on track rivalry which has similarities

:18:25.:18:28.

today. And if Michael is to beat William, he will have to overcome an

:18:29.:18:33.

injury as the brothers battle it out to win a new trophy named after

:18:34.:18:38.

their Father. It is a good thing to have. It will be nice for one of us

:18:39.:18:41.

to come home with it, something different. When it comes to

:18:42.:18:46.

motorbikes, family comes first and we get on well we have ups and

:18:47.:18:52.

downs. It is good you can have a chat about it afterwards. It is

:18:53.:18:58.

funny, we do it all the time. Famously, Michael won his first

:18:59.:19:04.

Northwest 200 in 2008. Days after the death of his Father on the same

:19:05.:19:09.

circuit. John McGuinness finished third on that race -- in that race.

:19:10.:19:16.

There's no way I could have eaten Michael and a lot of people were

:19:17.:19:21.

willing him to win. -- eaten. It was like a Mexican wave all round the

:19:22.:19:26.

track and it was a special moment. And there could be more memories for

:19:27.:19:33.

the Dunlop dynasty this week. And that trophy will be unveiled

:19:34.:19:39.

this Saturday after the racing for the best rider of the meeting and we

:19:40.:19:44.

will have more special reports this week.

:19:45.:19:49.

He used to captain his hometown club and now he is set to manage them.

:19:50.:19:53.

Derry City, who sacked Roddy Collins over the

:19:54.:19:56.

weekend, have confirmed that Peter Hutton is the new Brandywell boss.

:19:57.:19:58.

All smiles in his first training session but many macro knows he has

:19:59.:20:11.

to get results to claim the table. He was widely respect it as a

:20:12.:20:17.

player, turning out almost 700 times. He won a league title and he

:20:18.:20:24.

now stepped up from being assistant to play a macro. Unfortunately, it

:20:25.:20:28.

did not work out for him. We have to move on and we have to focus for the

:20:29.:20:34.

campaign. Some players have become disillusioned so it is important to

:20:35.:20:38.

instil confidence in them and give them the freedom to express

:20:39.:20:41.

themselves. The club's top scorer last season has been in and out of

:20:42.:20:46.

the team were denied a row with Roddy Collins. I read the media

:20:47.:20:53.

reports saying we were arguing, I never had a cross word with the man.

:20:54.:20:58.

When he came in, I act him. This is not the first time Peter Hutton has

:20:59.:21:04.

been in the hot seat, he has been caretaker three times in the past.

:21:05.:21:08.

At this time, he is the confirmed boss of the team and he has until

:21:09.:21:12.

the end of the season to make an impression.

:21:13.:21:18.

That is it from the North Coast. Before you go, porch to it is

:21:19.:21:25.

relatively quiet. -- Port Stewart. What can we expect tomorrow, more

:21:26.:21:29.

prep is all racing? Roads will be closed tomorrow at

:21:30.:21:35.

quarter past nine. Thousands of people will descend on the North

:21:36.:21:39.

coast for the second qualifying session and the roads will open

:21:40.:21:44.

again for a couple of hours in the afternoon but close at quarter past

:21:45.:21:47.

five for the first races. These grandstands hold thousands and they

:21:48.:21:54.

will be full tomorrow. And I can tell you there are literally

:21:55.:21:57.

thousands of people around the country, motorcycle fans, keeping a

:21:58.:22:01.

close eye on the weather forecasts and keeping their fingers crossed

:22:02.:22:06.

for sunshine tomorrow and Saturday! We hope to provide that, thank you.

:22:07.:22:11.

The racing is really dependent on the weather.

:22:12.:22:18.

The Balmoral Show keeps going on, whatever the conditions.

:22:19.:22:20.

Cecilia is there to bring us the forecast.

:22:21.:22:29.

It has been good all day but you have reigned around at the moment.

:22:30.:22:35.

Stephen is looking for sunshine tomorrow. -- you have reigned

:22:36.:22:46.

around. -- rain around. The show is on until the end of the week and it

:22:47.:22:51.

is great and we have sampled the food tent. There was a smell of food

:22:52.:23:02.

and the last time I had the treacle was when I was a child as a family.

:23:03.:23:07.

This is the forecast. It will get warmer and drier and brighter.
