A community in mourning as a young boy dies and a father fights for

:00:14.:00:20.

Totally devastated. Heartbreaking news. The community is just numb.

:00:21.:00:35.

A new round of talks on flags parades and the past -

:00:36.:00:38.

but are they any more likely to succeed than the last ones?

:00:39.:00:41.

A man appears in court accused of directing terrorism.

:00:42.:00:44.

The cleanup after weekend of floods in homes that have already

:00:45.:00:47.

Our economy is finally on the up - but will a looming interest rate

:00:48.:00:51.

As the GAA targets a global audience, an ugly pre-match brawl

:00:52.:00:57.

between Armagh and Cavan prompts the association president to intervene.

:00:58.:01:04.

And further heavy and thundery downpours are in the forecast.

:01:05.:01:07.

A warning has been issued by the Met Office.

:01:08.:01:09.

Robert Christie was only eight years old and described

:01:10.:01:17.

by his school principal as a bubbly wee character, interested in

:01:18.:01:20.

He and his father, Bertie, were helping out

:01:21.:01:26.

an elderly neighbour on a farm near Dunloy at the weekend when they

:01:27.:01:30.

Robert couldn't survive breathing in the toxins.

:01:31.:01:36.

Mr Christie is still critically ill in hospital.

:01:37.:01:40.

As David Maxwell reports, the tragedy has once again highlighted

:01:41.:01:42.

The dangers of farming life were once again thrown into sharp

:01:43.:01:50.

focus when the emergency services arrived at this farm on Saturday.

:01:51.:01:54.

They were called after a postman discovered

:01:55.:01:56.

a father and son unconscious, poisoned by lethal slurry gases.

:01:57.:02:02.

The eight-year-old boy was Robert Christie. He'd come here with

:02:03.:02:05.

his father, Bertie, who was helping the elderly farm owner.

:02:06.:02:08.

It's understood slurry was being mixed when they were overcome

:02:09.:02:11.

Robert was airlifted to hospital but couldn't be revived.

:02:12.:02:16.

His father remains critical. news. The community is just numb.

:02:17.:02:32.

Particularly in a rule committee like this, everybody knows what

:02:33.:02:36.

everybody is doing and they talk to each other. The whole farming

:02:37.:02:40.

This morning, a special assembly took place at the small rural school

:02:41.:02:45.

Staff say a huge hole has been left by the tragic death.

:02:46.:02:53.

Robert was a well loved member of the school family. Very gentle

:02:54.:03:00.

nature. He made friends quite easily and would have shared his time with

:03:01.:03:04.

others and for that he was very popular. His loss will have a huge

:03:05.:03:09.

impact on his friends and his classmates and the staff and the

:03:10.:03:12.

A funeral service for the eight-year-old is due to

:03:13.:03:16.

This latest farming tragedy is a reminder of the dangers

:03:17.:03:19.

At this time of year, farmers want to get slurry onto the land so they

:03:20.:03:29.

have to mix it and this is when gases come from it. The messages,

:03:30.:03:39.

once you start mixing slurry, get it out immediately and let the machine

:03:40.:03:40.

There have been 24 fatalities on farms here in the last three years.

:03:41.:03:45.

But no slurry-related deaths since September 2012, when Ulster

:03:46.:03:47.

rugby player Nevin Spence died with his father and brother

:03:48.:03:50.

The Health and Safety Executive are leading the investigation

:03:51.:03:54.

It will also be considering what more can be done to

:03:55.:04:00.

Intensive talks about the past, parades and flags are expected to

:04:01.:04:09.

be convened by the First and Deputy First Ministers.

:04:10.:04:13.

It's thought there will be two three-day sessions.

:04:14.:04:16.

The five Stormont Executive parties are being asked to name

:04:17.:04:19.

Mark Devenport joins me now live from Stormont.

:04:20.:04:29.

What other chances of a breakthrough? You will remember that

:04:30.:04:36.

myself and my colleagues spent hours over Christmas and the New Year

:04:37.:04:41.

standing outside the Stormont Today, waiting for some breakthrough in

:04:42.:04:44.

those marathon talks chaired by the former American diplomat Richard

:04:45.:04:49.

Haass. They ended without agreement and you must say that on the face of

:04:50.:04:53.

it, nothing seems to have changed in relation to this. The parties are

:04:54.:04:58.

being asked to name five strong delegations and Martin McGuinness,

:04:59.:05:05.

standing a short time ago, told us it was important to make progress in

:05:06.:05:11.

the days and weeks ahead. We have agreed that there will be an

:05:12.:05:15.

intensive period of talks in what is clearly a very limited window of

:05:16.:05:19.

opportunity, up until the first couple of days of July. And we will

:05:20.:05:25.

enter that with the same spirit as we entered the Haass talks,

:05:26.:05:30.

determined to find a way forward to get an agreement around these three

:05:31.:05:38.

issues. This time, will the British and Irish governments be involved?

:05:39.:05:42.

Not directly, they will not be at the table. We have the Irish Foreign

:05:43.:05:46.

Minister here in time on what might turn out to be his farewell tour as

:05:47.:05:51.

he will stand down in Dublin on July the 4th. He says the governments

:05:52.:05:56.

would do whatever they can to assist this progress and he detects new

:05:57.:06:02.

momentum but the governments will not be directly at the table.

:06:03.:06:09.

Instead, it will be facilitated by a secretary and essentially a civil

:06:10.:06:14.

servant. On another matter, the issue of environs. That is high on

:06:15.:06:21.

the agenda? That was because of the Westminster committee using these

:06:22.:06:25.

facilities. -- on the runs. They were taking evidence about the vexed

:06:26.:06:30.

question of paramilitary on the runs. Gerry Kelly from Sinn Fein

:06:31.:06:35.

explains to us why he has decided to decline any invitation to give

:06:36.:06:40.

evidence to that committee. They say they will cooperate with any review

:06:41.:06:43.

being conducted by a senior judge but they say that they will say no

:06:44.:06:49.

to the Westminster committee, annoying members who say this is an

:06:50.:06:50.

insult to Parliament. Thank you. A man described as a prominent

:06:51.:06:55.

member of the IRA in Londonderry has been in court accused of directing

:06:59.:07:01.

that the charges stem from a smuggled note found

of a man visiting Maghaberry Prison Police say that after he left

:07:46.:07:51.

the prison he was later seen speaking to Thomas Ashe Mellon

:07:52.:07:56.

on Glenshane Road near Maghera. Police are now trying to locate

:07:57.:07:59.

Mr O. The prosecution claimed there was

DNA and handwriting evidence linking At one point

in the letter it states: I will not allow any dual army

:08:06.:08:12.

operating along with the IRA and Tell the POWs not to engage

:08:13.:08:15.

in loose talk. A defence lawyer described

:08:16.:08:26.

the letter as a rant and said the charge of directing

:08:27.:08:28.

terrorism didn't stand up. He said there were no instructions

:08:29.:08:32.

or orders being given. A detective constable said

the police would oppose bail The detective constable said

recovery in the local economy. It was an unusual smell that led to

:09:33.:09:42.

the discovery of more than 400 cannabis plants

:09:43.:09:45.

in South Belfast at the weekend. People living near the house in the

:09:46.:09:51.

Village area alerted the police. As BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson

:09:52.:09:54.

reports, once inside, officers saw the lengths to which the people

:09:55.:09:57.

behind the cannabis factory had gone It looked like a normal house

:09:58.:10:01.

on a normal street. But inside was

:10:02.:10:10.

a secret cannabis factory. To keep it hidden,

:10:11.:10:13.

a wall was knocked through to In recent weeks,

:10:14.:10:15.

people in the area became suspicious It was the smell, there was a very

:10:16.:10:32.

strange smell coming out of this building and people, lots of elderly

:10:33.:10:36.

people would not know what a cannabis factory would smell like

:10:37.:10:41.

Anna took some investigation to realise it was a drugs factory. To

this up and we are delighted that the community provided information

:10:57.:10:59.

to the police, who have dismantled this factory. Toyland 400 plants

:11:00.:11:05.

were found inside, close to a South Belfast family centre. We were very

:11:06.:11:11.

surprised to find it was on the doorstep, with so many children

:11:12.:11:16.

coming to the centre and we're glad it has been fired. The cannabis

:11:17.:11:20.

factory is similar to one find in a rented house in Fermanagh two years

:11:21.:11:25.

ago. Finding the factories is not easy. But often, there are some

:11:26.:11:29.

clues. Police say there are a number of different things to look out for.

:11:30.:11:34.

Blacked out windows or lots of condensation on windows, people

:11:35.:11:38.

going in and out all of the time and, of course, unusual smells.

:11:39.:11:43.

Following the latest find, police have reminded landlords to

:11:44.:11:47.

check their rented properties to make sure they know exactly what is

:11:48.:11:49.

Closing arguments have been made in the trial of Francis McPeak. The

:11:50.:12:05.

72-year-old faces 12 child sex abuse charges involving a 15-year-old girl

:12:06.:12:08.

died years ago. A prosecution barrister questioned his evidence

:12:09.:12:13.

that he was having problems with his sexual capabilities during the time

:12:14.:12:18.

of the alleged abuse. But the defence lawyer claimed the alleged

:12:19.:12:21.

victim had told lies. Tomorrow, the jury is expected to retire to

:12:22.:12:24.

consider its verdict. Homeowners whose properties were

:12:25.:12:27.

flooded at the weekend in the heavy rain say they fear they'll

:12:28.:12:29.

never be able to sell their homes. Properties between Ahoghill

:12:30.:12:33.

and Randalstown were affected. Roads

in Ballymena were also flooded for Will Leitch has been listening

Ballymena's Toome Road and Local people filmed the worst

:12:44.:12:49.

of it as they tried to protect their homes last night - but the elements

:12:50.:12:56.

and history were against them. Most householders already have

:12:57.:13:07.

painful memories of the times it has flooded before. When it started last

:13:08.:13:10.

night, the sandbags were dug out quickly. But it still was not enough

:13:11.:13:18.

for some homes. The garage was flooded and the oil tank was lifted

:13:19.:13:22.

up, and the kitchen floor was completely swamped with water.

:13:23.:13:24.

In several homes, furniture had been hurriedly removed.

:13:25.:13:26.

Today, the insurance assessors were due.

:13:27.:13:31.

You can see the watermark was actually up to here last night. The

:13:32.:13:44.

last time the flood happened, it can still see the watermark. The new, if

:13:45.:13:51.

we knew it was going to flood, we would not have bought this house.

:13:52.:13:56.

That was eight years ago - a time Ruth McCandless remembers

:13:57.:13:59.

I came home to the downstairs flooded last time.

:14:00.:14:02.

I thought I would have to relive that moment all over again.

:14:03.:14:10.

The drains here and in other areas like the Glagorm Road were built for

:14:11.:14:14.

a different era, when thunderstorms like last night?s were rare.

:14:15.:14:19.

We are seeing more of these intensive storm events and that is

:14:20.:14:24.

something we are very conscious of and looking forward to seeing

:14:25.:14:27.

whether the design standards are suitable for years to come.

:14:28.:14:30.

Residents can now apply for an emergency grant of ?1000.

How a players' parade descended into a mass brawl.

:14:35.:14:46.

New figures indicate Northern Ireland's economic

:14:47.:14:49.

recovery continues to lag behind most of Britain.

:14:50.:14:52.

The research compares four parts of the UK.

:14:53.:14:54.

The local economy fell further in the crash and it's been slower

:14:55.:14:58.

But it's feared that fragile recovery could be derailed with

:14:59.:15:07.

an early rise in interest rates to cool a booming economy in London

:15:08.:15:14.

Our Economics and Business Editor, John Campbell, reports.

:15:15.:15:27.

The signs of recovery are becoming visible. New jobs, increasing car

:15:28.:15:34.

sales and a stabilising property market. We are emerging from a long

:15:35.:15:40.

and difficult recession. Figures produced by the Office for National

:15:41.:15:43.

Statistics show we had it harder than other parts of the UK. One

:15:44.:15:49.

measure shows between 2007 and 2009, our economy shrank by more

:15:50.:15:53.

than 4%. More than doubled the fall in the rest of the UK. Between 2009

:15:54.:16:02.

and 2012, we had hardly any growth, just 1.4%. For the UK as a whole,

:16:03.:16:08.

the rise was 2.5%. We have also not been as good as creating jobs

:16:09.:16:14.

recently. Second lowest unemployment at the peak of the downturn. It has

:16:15.:16:19.

not benefited as much as the other countries from economic recovery so

:16:20.:16:24.

now has the highest and implement levels. But these figures do not

:16:25.:16:31.

eliminate is how this place, London, is pulling away from us and all the

:16:32.:16:37.

other parts of the UK. Take just one example. Between 2010 and 2012,

:16:38.:16:45.

about 80% of all new private-sector jobs in the UK were created in

:16:46.:16:49.

London. Just think about that. Four out of five all new private-sector

:16:50.:16:57.

jobs concentrated in this one city. If London success generates the tax

:16:58.:17:02.

that helps pay for our services, does that matter? Such talent for

:17:03.:17:08.

the rest of the company -- from the country acts as a magnet. People

:17:09.:17:12.

feel the need to leave their own areas and moved to London so that

:17:13.:17:17.

you other parts of the UK. Areas like Northern Ireland and Scotland

:17:18.:17:22.

with their talented young people and that is not good news for those

:17:23.:17:27.

areas. Then there is the issue of house prices. In the last year,

:17:28.:17:32.

prices in London have risen by a massive 17%, the equivalent figure

:17:33.:17:37.

back at home is just 0.3% and is surging London market is something

:17:38.:17:40.

that we should be worried about. That is because the frothy the

:17:41.:17:45.

growth in London, the sooner the bank of England will have to raise

:17:46.:17:50.

interest rates. That will hit the finances of the thousands here who

:17:51.:17:55.

have big boomtime mortgages. If enough people feel the pinch, it

:17:56.:17:59.

could even put our recovery into reverse. Make no mistake, rates will

:18:00.:18:03.

go up. A process most likely to happen early

:18:04.:18:04.

Instead of talking about the football action

:18:05.:18:09.

at yesterday's Ulster quarter-final, the headlines are

:18:10.:18:11.

about the mass brawl which marred the match between Armagh and Cavan.

:18:12.:18:14.

It would seem sanctions are inevitable, and that won't be

:18:15.:18:28.

lost on the GAA, as it pushes to market its brand globally.

:18:29.:18:32.

The pre-match parade at the Athletic grounds yesterday descended

:18:33.:18:35.

into a brawl between the two sides - with the parade band scattering

:18:36.:18:38.

The trouble started as the players made their way to join the parade. A

:18:39.:18:58.

disagreement over the positioning of the procession in the procession led

:18:59.:19:00.

to the to the squads clashing. A large number of the stirring

:19:01.:19:04.

line-ups were involved and it took around two minutes for order to be

:19:05.:19:09.

restored. The Armagh manager played down this couple. When you get 15

:19:10.:19:18.

boys hyped up and the adrenaline is flowing, you are going to get little

:19:19.:19:24.

tests, that is all it was, nothing serious. How concerned are you about

:19:25.:19:31.

suspensions? We will wait and see what happens. From what I saw, there

:19:32.:19:36.

were 30 players involved so are they going to suspend them all? Martin

:19:37.:19:43.

Dunne was unable to start the game following the incident. I don't know

:19:44.:19:51.

what happened, it was a mass and I could not see who did what. It was

:19:52.:19:57.

as a result of that incident. How did it affect your side?

:19:58.:20:04.

as a result of that incident. How to quantify that. Was it a reason

:20:05.:20:07.

as a result of that incident. How for Armagh's download? I don't know,

:20:08.:20:09.

very hard to qualify that. for Armagh's download? I don't know,

:20:10.:20:18.

GAA President gave this reaction. We would like the managers to take

:20:19.:20:21.

responsibility for the games and line them up in an orderly manner

:20:22.:20:26.

and then played the game. Unfortunately that did not happen

:20:27.:20:29.

and anything that damages our image is of concern to us

:20:30.:20:34.

and anything that damages our image seriously will stop at the time, no

:20:35.:20:37.

action was taken by the referee who will now submit his match report

:20:38.:20:42.

before a retrospective disciplinary process will begin if

:20:43.:20:43.

As for the game - Armagh ran out winners, by one goal and twelve

:20:44.:20:50.

points to nine points, and Cavan will now host Westmeath following

:20:51.:20:53.

this morning's draw for the All-Ireland first round qualifiers.

:20:54.:20:56.

Derry face Longford, Fermanagh travel to Laois, while Monaghan or

:20:57.:20:58.

At the Athletic Grounds, Armagh were in control for most

:20:59.:21:03.

of the game bar a brief rally from Cavan early in the second half

:21:04.:21:07.

of the contest when the Breffni county got within three points.

:21:08.:21:10.

Cornerback Fergal Flanagan popped this one over to give

:21:11.:21:12.

But then came the key score of the game, a Caolan Rafferty goal

:21:13.:21:17.

in the 51st minute, to put the result beyond doubt and leave

:21:18.:21:20.

Cavan looking at the back door route in the All-Ireland Championship.

:21:21.:21:40.

Ravenhill was rocked at the weekend with the news that David Humphreys

:21:41.:21:46.

is leaving for Gloucester in England. When David Humphreys called

:21:47.:21:51.

on the Ulster shirt, he made things happen. Eight European cup winner as

:21:52.:22:01.

a player and in the last six years, as director of rugby, the driving

:22:02.:22:05.

force behind Ulster's return to prominence in the game. His

:22:06.:22:08.

departure comes as a shock to everyone. David has been consistent

:22:09.:22:13.

over the years saying he wants his career to advance. We would not

:22:14.:22:18.

stand in his way. I think the surprising part is the speed with

:22:19.:22:24.

which it has happened but perhaps that is the way. David has been at

:22:25.:22:27.

Ulster for 20 years and that is great, but in part, he probably

:22:28.:22:34.

feels the need to test himself in a different environment. As for his

:22:35.:22:40.

successor, the trial will be wide. We will look around the world but we

:22:41.:22:44.

will also look close to home, we have some cracking talent emerging

:22:45.:22:47.

through the Ulster system and we will take our time and recruit the

:22:48.:22:50.

absolute best person to fit with our ambition. Seven Ulstermen are part
