tournament, the Open Championship, is set to return to

Northern Ireland for the first time Royal Portrush will host

the competition, Well, we can go live now to Stephen

Watson, who's at the US Open. This event gets underway tomorrow

but it's the news of the biggest golf tournament in the world coming

back to Northern Ireland Royal Portrush is set to go back

on the Open rota. I understand the year it will

stage the event is 2019. It's all been made possible

because of a deal between Portrush, the R, golf's governing body,

and the Stormont Executive, which Some of golf's global stars have

been giving us their views All all the golf course and Royal

Portrush is regarded as one of the finest in the world. It has only

hosted the Open Championship once before but now they event is coming

back. Darren Clarke won the tournament in 2011 and returned to

Portrush to a heroes welcome. He is thrilled his home club has landed

this global event. It is wonderful for the area, Northern Ireland, all

of Ireland. It is one of the biggest sporting events in the world coming

year. It is massive PR publicity. Pictures of Portrush being beamed

around the world to people who have not seen how beautiful it is. It

will hopefully will bring more people to the area. Darren Clarke is

one of two golfers from Northern Ireland to have ever lifted the

famous claret jug. The other was the late Fred Daly, who competed in the

Open Championship the last time it was staged here 60 years ago. The

Open Championship is held in Portrush. Fred Daly shows he is

still the best in Britain. Tiger Woods is the world's best player. He

has won the Open Championship three times and was delighted at the news.

The Open Championship is set to go back to Northern Ireland for the

second time in its history. Which course? Royal Portrush. Your Mac I

don't think I have been there. As far north as I have been as Royal

County Down. It would be pretty incredible.

The sports governing body has previously turned Portrush town as a

possible venue because of concerns over infrastructure. But the

successful staging of the Irish Open in 2012 showed that the area was

able to cope with hosting a major. The Irish Open was the first-ever

sell-out event in the history of golf's European tour. In five years'

time, the Open Championship will return to the North Coast.

It is incredibly exciting growing up in Portrush it was a dream of mine

to play a big tournament there. It was a wild pipe dream to have the

Open Championship come back to Portrush. It speaks volumes about

how far are Northern Ireland has, as a country. And Rory McIlroy also

told me it would be the biggest achievement of his career if he

could win their Open Championship at Portrush. The news is expected to be

rubber-stamped next week. The members of Royal Portrush still

have to officially back the plan, but tonight one prominent member

welcomed the news. It is something we have been working

towards over the last few years and I think it is great for the club and

more importantly great for Portrush, Northern Ireland and Ireland from a

tourism point of view. It is a wheel boost. -- real boost.
